Mason Klein logra su primera victoria en la Etapa 2 del Dakar 2023, la general se mantiene abierta

Lo que no se pudo lograr ayer se consiguió hoy. Parecía que la primera victoria de etapa de Mason Klein, el joven estadounidense de 21 años y mejor novato de 2022, era algo inevitable en este Dakar y si no se conseguía hoy iba a ser otro día. Fue al día siguiente de perder solo por un par de minutos en la Etapa 1 después de liderar todo el tramo. Hoy la situación fue inversa, porque Daniel Sanders dominó con bastante ventaja toda la especial pero el australiano decidió levantar en los últimos 40 kilómetros para no tener que abrir la especial mañana, algo que se suponía que la nueva reglamentación evitaría. De todas maneras, Klein jugó lo contrario y aceleró a fondo en los últimos 100 kilómetros en una etapa muy desafiante y ganó una merecida etapa. Y eso que recibió una penalización de 2 minutos al final del día.

En un clasificador bastante mezclado, con varios pilotos que largaron fuera del Top 15 terminando de los primeros, segundo fue Sebastian Buhler de Hero a 1:09 y tercero se ubicó Skyler Howes de Husqvarna a 1:58. Los pilotos responsables de abrir ruta, como Ricky Brabec, Kevin Benavides, Toby Price y Joan Barreda tuvieron actuaciones respetables en esta tarea, pero terminarían cediendo tiempo especialmente Brabec y Benavides.

Con los resultados, Mason Klein pasa a liderar la general seguido de Price a 1:41 y Barreda a 2:03. Kevin Benavides es cuarto, Daniel Sanders quinto a menos de 3 minutos. El líder de la general al inicio del día, Ricky Brabec cayó al sexto puesto.

Los pilotos chilenos Pablo Quintanilla y Nacho Cornejo tuvieron una etapa que fue de menos a más, terminando recortando tiempo después de haber estado cerca de 10 minutos por debajo de la referencia en momentos de los primeros 200 kilómetros.  Quintanilla terminó P11 a 4:23 y queda P8 a 5:16 de la punta. Cornejo fue P13 a 4:41 y queda todavía P15, pero a más largos 14:47 de Klein.

En Rally2, Pato Cabrera se ubica P32 y Tomás de Gavardo P35. John Medina se encontraba dentro de los últimos 40 km al cierre del artículo.

Mañana se viene otro día muy desafiante con 447 kilómetros contra el reloj entre Al-Ula y Ha’il...

In less than 24 hours, the first big motorsports event of the year starts, the Rally Dakar 2024. And with it, the new season of the FIA W2RC.

This year, it might get interesting with a few new things, compared to last year. First, there is the 48 hour stage, that is basically a extremely long stage with four night camps on the route, and the drivers have to stop at the next camp, after a specific time, to rest for the night. In the morning they'll have to continue the race from there and the time will continue to run. There won't be any service from their crew at night. It's basically the evolution of the marathon stage.

Nasser Al-Attiyah will be driving one of the Prodrive Hunter this year and is now a teammate of Sebastien Loeb. Which means one of the best rally pilots ever and one of the best rally raid pilots ever are now driving for the same team. It will be interesting to see who'll be the better one, but my prediction is Nasser Al-Attiyah.

Nasser's seat in the Toyota Hilux now goes to Seth Quintero from the USA. He was one of the top drivers, in the last two years, in the T3 category for lightweight prototypes. I think he is a good addition to the team and will make a good job. If he will be racing for the win in his first T1+ year is hard to answer, but I'd give him a year, instead of thinking he can win this year.

Will Audi finally be able to demonstrate that a electric car can win the Dakar? The car is definitely fast enough, and also the drivers are, especially with Stephane Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz. But what about the reliability? That was the big weakness in the last two years, maybe they will finally have a Dakar without too many problems. If yes, they will probably win.

Joan Barreda Bort is now driving for Hero. Will he finally win his first Dakar, or will he once again, lose it because of one of his many mistakes and crashes? He is fast enough for the win, he just needs to reduce his mistakes and maybe take a bit less risk.

Or will the win go back to KTM, after Honda won last year? The bike category will be as interesting as never before, at least if you take the last 20 years.

The truck category will get very unpredictable again. The second year without Kamaz and the third year without MAZ means that the Iveco of the DeRooy team and the czech MM Technology Iveco, driven by Martin Maczik, will be the big favorites. But Ales Loprais is always good for a surprise with his Praga.

Dakar 2023: Daniel Sanders gana apretada Etapa 1 frente a los pilotos de Honda, Quintanilla P2 y Sunderland abandona

El piloto australiano Daniel Sanders propinó el primer buen golpe de este Dakar 2023 al ganar la primera etapa de mayor longitud. Fue una jornada apretada, ya que la diferencia final fue apenas 7 segundos sobre Pablo Quintanilla. Además, hubo otras cinco motos dentro de un minuto. Más aun, Sanders no fue el gran dominador del día y solo lideró el último Waypoint. 

Quién había liderado toda la especial fue el estadounidense Mason Klein, representante del BAS Dakar y mejor debutante de 2021. Klein parecía encaminado a una gran primera victoria de etapa en el Dakar, pero cedió un par de minutos en los últimos 50 kilómetros terminando finalmente quinto.

Esto lo aprovecharon Sanders, Quintanilla, Ricky Brabec y Joan Barreda Bort para terminar en los primeros cuatro separados por apenas 20 segundos. En la general, Sanders comanda por apenas 1 minuto sobre Barreda, con seis pilotos en 2 minutos.

La gran historia del día fue el abandono de Sam Sunderland. Después de una fuerte caída en el kilómetro 52, el campeón defensor sufrió una fractura de omoplato y una conmoción cerebral, por lo que debió ser evacuado por los médicos. 

Nacho Cornejo finalizó en la décima posición en un muy buen día considerando que, por su posición de largada, debió abrir la ruta durante la mayor parte de la jornada. Cornejo es P15 en la general a 12:35 de Sanders.
