Thousands of people in pain are urging the Drug Enforcement Administration to scrap plans to further reduce the supply of opioid medication in 2024.

The DEA recently announced it would cut production quotas for oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine and other opioids for the 8th straight year, despite complaints from pain patients and healthcare providers that the medications are already in short supply and difficult to get at pharmacies.

The DEA invited people to comment on its plans in the Federal Register. Over 2,400 have so far – many with heart breaking stories to share about not being able to get the pain medication they need.

“I was finally able to establish a reasonable pain management routine but that was disrupted when my regular pharmacy was no longer able to supply my medication (a moderate dose of Norco) and not a single other pharmacy was willing/able to fill my prescription,” said Jessica Ericksen. “One pharmacy supervisor screamed at my doctor on the phone when he called in to try to get my prescription set up with them. I now have a 1.5 hour round trip drive to get my medication, which is particularly challenging for a disabled person who is unable to drive.” “I am one of the many that has had my life destroyed by the government regulations on pain meds. I haven't been able to get my medications for the better part of a year,” said Paula Perry. “I'm now basically bedridden and praying for death. Stop doing this to people, we are dying and you guys make it worse every year.”

“Most of us in pain have gone through all of the other drugs to treat our pain and these are the drugs of last resort. The opioids don't totally treat our pain but allow us to function,” said Heather Larson. “The DEA needs to stop playing doctor and let the doctor decide what is right to prescribe. If production is cut anymore, people will commit suicide or go to the street for pain medication.” “I have already had to jump through numerous hoops just to be prescribed my meds, but now have to call pharmacy after pharmacy monthly to find my meds, because they are out of stock at every pharmacy around me in a 10-mile radius,” said Jill Bartruff, who suffers from scoliosis. “I also had a surgery in September 2023 and could not find a pharmacy to fill my post op pain meds. I was in immense pain and was unable to advocate for myself to get my meds filled. Imagine being cut open and discharged from the hospital with no pain control.”

“Why do you continue to cut supply when legitimate patients cannot obtain their medications? Jack Off Prelims

There will be twelve preliminary polls consisting of every valid nominated Jack that got one or two nominations. Every valid nominated Jack with 3+ nominations is already safe and secure in the Jacket which will be revealed in its completed glory once the prelims are over.

The prelims will consist of seven polls with 2-3 Jacks that received two nominations, and five polls with 7-8 Jacks that received one nomination. The winner of each poll will ascend to the Jacket!

THE WRATH OF BECKY - Review

DISTRIBUTOR: QUIVER Distribution

SYNOPSIS: Two years after she escaped a violent attack on her family, Becky attempts to rebuild her life in the care of an older woman - a kindred spirit named Elena. But when a group known as the “Noble Men” break into their home, attack them, and take her beloved dog, Diego, Becky must return to her old ways to protect herself and her loved ones.

REVIEW: Lulu Wilson is back, reprising her role of Becky from the 2020 film “Becky,” directed by Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion. At the helm this time are directors Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote as they ratchet things up placing Beck on par with Charles Bronson, Jason Statham or Keanu Reeves on an independent budget.

The screenplay takes no prisoners as it quickly brings the viewer up to speed and gets right down to the action. Just as Becky has achieved a bit of normalcy to her life she draws the attention of another fascist group trying to bring down the political system. The plot brings in a few elements from the initial film and works them. We get a few more details about one, but the mystery grows. The story gives way to action and Becky feels like what if Kevin McCallister (“Home Alone”) grew up to be John McClane (“Die-Hard”). No spoilers - the end seems a bit far fetched, but given what goes on in the rest of the film it should be hard to believe. For an independent film in this genre, it is extremely well written and I’d be curious to read the description of many of these action scenes. The story hits many beats the first film did. Some of those are character driven, others feel like the writers doing it for the fans of the first film.

The production values are solid. Given the technology has come a long way, Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion demonstrate they have the chops of any of the great action directors that came out of the late 80’s and 90’s. The film has an excellent pacing, capturing engaging performances, and effect sequences that play out like a hybrid of video game play and a slasher film gore. I’m a sucker for a good score and composer Nima Fakhrara’s work here adds so much to the tone and feel of the film.

THE WRATH OF BECKY has a great cast. In the previous film, actor Kevin James anchored the film as the main villain. This time out, veteran actor Seann William Scott, also known for his comedic work, takes on the central villain and creates a memorable character. He creates a grounded, intelligent character that gets caught up in the madness of the story. I love the way his performance has his character in denial, that he is in a different film and needs to come to grips with the unstoppable force of Becky. The film is absolutely adult in terms of some themes and the violence, but the three henchmen feel like they are modeled after the “Home Alone” series. Then there is actress Lulu Wilson. She is fantastic. She is able to present this sense of innocence and youthfulness, but then she is able to present this look and intensity where you believe she is lethal. She is such a chameleon and a delight to watch work.

2020’s “Becky” was a memorable film, a well made independent film, featuring a great cast. The film had a serious tone and had much more jeopardy and peril to the tale. THE WRATH OF BECKY plays it a bit more tongue and cheek and amps up the violence and gore. The film asks us to believe that Becky is now 16. Okay, she’s been through a lot in the previous film so I’ll give the filmmakers that, but there are scenes in the film where she does look older, at least 18, which she is. Regardless, I loved the ride. The film ends taking the story in a new direction and there could easily be another film in the series. I loved Lulu Wilson’s work here and would be interested in taking in her continuing deadly exploits.

Sim ages at the start of my Uberhood

I'm using a 2 days = 1 year age mod to play this new Uberhood I'm panning (and actually already started to play when I need pause from the Somersets) and with a really difficult algorithm I have calculated each Sim's age with the default aging system and translated it into their age with the mod, all with the help of SimPE (I have quite a lot of free time currently xD). Plot: An elderly woman battling Alzheimer's disease agrees to let a film crew document her condition, but what they discover is something far more sinister going on.

Starring: Jill Larson, Anne Ramsay, Michelle Ang & Ryan Cutrona

This movie def hit a little close to home for me, having had to care for my mom when we realized that she had signs of dementia and then lost her prematurely 6 years ago. I don't think I could have ever watched this movie when I first started doing this annual challenge because it would have been way too fresh. But I finally decided to check it out. Definitely still made me think of my mom and had me feeling sad about that, but then the movie eventually turns into a proper horror show later. The effects are good imo. Once again another found footage movie so do what you will with that knowledge. The excuse of it being a documentary evens out the reason why they keep filming I'd say. Jill Larson does a nice job as the title role, which is key in this situation. Idk if it was super original or whatever but I think they handled the subject well enough. I thought it was unsettling to see the shift of Deborah's character personally and I felt for Anne Ramsey's character having to deal with seeing it as the movie went on. Idk, it wasn't the most pleasant of watches but I think it was a solid enough movie to warrant a watch finally.

Idk about ships per se buuuut I will give u the fictional romantic relationships that are compelling me deeply rn which are: Kevin and Nora the leftovers (<33333), Philip and Elizabeth the Americans, Mary Kate and Wanda from the Dixie chicks song (not ironic I think that’s a perfect narrative), jude and willem (rereading before the play), ummmm my character Eleanor and her fiancée who she loves and is cheating on, Eleanor and the guy she’s cheating with, jimmy and Kim better call Saul. Need my couples a little unstable and toxic these days yk?

I read 156 books and graphic novels in 2023. 119 graphic novels, 37 books. 25 non-fiction, 131 fiction. 69 graphic novels, 50 graphic mangas. 15 re-reads.

Starting in March with Unbroken, I started reading a number of books about World War II. I think I had, as ever a goal to read more non-fiction and since there are so many books on the 2 World Wars, they are often the ones that I’m able to check out from the library without a super long wait list. Then Oppenheimer came out this summer so I was more intrigued and decided to read the basis for the film (which is atypical for me outside of comics). Following Unbroken I read a few spy books, Operation Mincemeat and Double Cross in May by Ben McIntyre that were super interesting.

I had previously read The Confidence Men about 2 British POWs from WWI who escaped a Turkish POW camp by (among other things) a Ouija board. I had started reading The Diary of Anne Frank/Diary of a Young Girl sometime this past year I think and finally finished it near the end of the year and Victor Frankl’s Man’s Search For Meaning in October. I started listening to The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich in November or December and read for my family’s book club The Woman Who Smashed Codes about Elizabeth Friedman and her husband who developed cryptology in the US between World War I and II and was treated pretty wretchedly by the US government for her efforts. This was in no small part due to J. Edgar Hoover, who seems to be more and more a villain every time I have the misfortune of encountering him in books and other media.

A manga series I had started last year, The Promised Neverland, I’m close to finishing (I believe there are 20 volumes, which isn’t super long for a manga series. Full Metal Alchemist is 20-something volumes if I remember correctly) and I finally finished Hikaru no Go about a teenager who accidentally finds himself competing in the Japanese game Go due to a haunted Go board in his grandfather’s attic. A web comic that my wife got me interested in, Lore Olympus, retells the story of Persephone and Hades with a combination of contemporary and antiquity culture. The comic is broken up into “seasons” and the second season was recently finished so I wanted to read up to that point while waiting for the end of the third season. Unfortunately, it was long enough ago that I had read up to the end of the first season I ended up having to start over. But this was good as there were a number of things I caught the second time through and appreciated more on a re-read.

I also read the 4th and 5th Wheel of Time books for the second time this past year, which was an interesting experience. There were a lot of things I remembered incorrectly because of the 25ish years since I read them initially. I don’t think I’m going to read the entire series all the way through again, but I might read book 6. I finished re-reading The Sandman (partly due to the release of the Netflix series) and went on a kick of other Vertigo (an imprint of DC Comics that focused on non-superhero books, more adult and more creator-controlled that is now largely if not entirely defunct) titles (the Dead Boy Detectives, Hellblazer, Swamp Thing). Don’t know where I’ll go with that. Also read a decent amount of Spider-Verse comics (mostly Spider-Gwen but one big crossover book that was sort of the culmination of the Spider-Verse storylines (I think?)) that was interesting. Spider-Gwen is a great comic that has yet to lead to the frustration I felt with the later Miles Morales books.

Nagata Kabi’s memoirs about self-esteem, her fraught relationship with her parents, alcoholism and eating problems is both interesting and very frustrating. I am very lucky to not have hardly any of her emotional, mental and health issues that are wound up together but reading her mangas it is hard not to want to shake her when she seems to recover from one life-threatening catastrophe only to work herself into another. I’m morbidly curious about her later volumes about pancreatitis.

Lastly, there were some books on Arthur and some non-fiction or books by African-American authors that I had intended to start or finish that I’m dragging my heels on. We’ll see what happens in the next year with that.
