PHARAON - (Jerzy Kawalerowicz, 1966)

Just watched (for the first time in its original full length form) a noticeable Polish literary pseudo-historic epic:"Pharaon" (Jerzy Kawalerowicz, 1966).The movie (more than 3 hours long) tells the tragic events that mark the brief life of young Faraon Ramses who would declare war to the Assyrians but must accept the decisions of the High Priests who have written a pact with that people and aim to eliminate the Egyption king.I see this "big" movie as one of the most successful examples of the historical genre that characterized the Polish cinema in the 1960s if nothing to grant  to the box office conveniences. Many are the social and psychological motives that emerge beyond the surfacing conflict of a king who unsuccessfully tries to free himself from any religious exploit; we have the motive of the cheating "double", the motive of the women's unreliability and that one of the money as both object of desire and indispensable symbol of power despite the main theme is about the fight between two opposite conceptions of the Power itself where the Pharaon's is moral and candid, while the High Priest's is pragmatic and effective); a hint that clearly alludes to two contemporary different concepts (translated into ideologies) of the State. An enjoyable movie with a particular narrative charm that spreads everywhere while the events flow, in a slow and majestic way, underlined by an original musical score that, in some cases, gives the movie the rhythms of an abstract ballet.
