I’m going to need you to cast the Feud: RFK v LBJ series because I want that to be a thing very badly.

I have had this on my mind for longer than I’ve been a legal adult so let’s talk about this I have a lot to say. This isn’t a comprehensive list.

MAINS

Lyndon Johnson: This is the easiest answer I’ll give, and it’s Bryan Cranston. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, Bryan plays a pretty good LBJ on stage and on camera. 

Robert Kennedy: This is the hardest thing because RFK had a very specific look and feel that’s very hard to recreate, but I’m gonna think outside the box and go with James Marsden. He’s got the boyish good looks and he’s good enough to capture all of Bobby’s subtleties. 

Lady Bird Johnson: I think she played her in Jackie but I stand by this, Beth Grant. To be fair, I didn’t actually remember she was in Jackie, I just remembered her as Dwight’s babysitter from The Office. 

Ethel Kennedy: This one is also hard for personal reasons, but I’ll pull a Ryan Murphy and demand Sarah Paulson. Ethel’s phenomenal and deserves a phenomenal portrayal, which Paulson can bring (yes I’m biased but Ethel herself shook my hand so I’m allowed to be)

Arthur Schlesinger: Our audience proxy should be played by Patrick Wilson and no one else.

SUPPORTINGS

John Kennedy: If you’re wondering ‘oh Amélie why did it take you so long to answer this’ it’s because JFK has been stumping me and I’m still stumped. Help me out here Internet. 

Jackie Kennedy: This should shock absolutely no one but I’ve been thinking about it and Phoebe Tonkin would work really well. Mostly because she’s pretty, and also if you look at her non CW work she’s talented enough to pull Jackie off.

Martin Luther King: I said this when I watched All The Way and I stand by, Chiwetel Ejiofor. He’s insanely talented and I trust him. 

Coretta King: Sonequa Martin-Green that’s it Siri send tweet. 

Nikita Krushchev: Get Christian Bale back in those prosthetics he used for Vice and you’ve got the leader of Soviet Russia during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Books read in 2021 #69 - “Mercury Rising” by Jeff Shesol. A compelling history of the Mercury space program, it's failures, triumphs, and it's political and cultural significance. Culminating in a tense, almost thriller like, account of John Glenn’s orbital flight and it's impact on a troubled US in the early 1960s. Well researched and written; I certainly discovered some things I'd not read elsewhere about the Mercury missions. But perhaps this book’s greatest achievement is adding depth and nuance to the character of John Glenn who is all too often depicted as a the one dimensional “straight-laced puritan” of the astronaut corp. This account shows him as a man with fears, flaws, and hopes alongside the driven focused work ethic. Highly recommended if you have any interest in the early days of space flight.
