The Backupsmore University brochure wasn’t nearly as interesting as one would would think by the way Stanford Pines pored over it, but if anyone were to wander by and see the way he stubbornly refused to look away from its pages, they might think it was a map to glistening treasure or the Fountain of Youth, rather than just a mediocre list of mediocre “luxuries” provided by a mediocre “school”: -Bug free dorms!* -Edible lunches!* -Certified non-criminal teachers!*

I love how in Finland some place names in Swedish and Finnish are almost the same but with small spelling differences (Vaasa-Vasa, Espoo-Esbo, Kaisaniemi-Kajsaniemi) but it’s even funnier when they’re just two entirely different names (Turku-Åbo, Pori-Bejörnebog, Pietarsaari-Jakobstad)

#there is a small town next to Pietarsaari that’s called Pedersöre #(no Finnish name because you know)#also re: pori-brjörneborg I do have to mention that Pori is just a truncatio

Maria Fox Larsson: Suspended B-gallery Main Space 07.03.-24.03.2024

Opening on Wednesday 06.03. 6-8pm

Suspended is an immersive installation experience by Maria Fox Larsson built with graphic works, automata toys, motorized sculptures, paper, mirrors and boxes. The exhibition program includes an artist talk (14.03.24, 18:00) and an artist-led workshop in paper mechanics (16.03.24, 16:00 - 18:00).

Black boxes and mirror shards. Propellers, rotation, patterns. Fish on wheels, fish wearing suits. Chimeras: some sweet, some sad, some disjointed. Naked women and skulls. The steady whirr of electric motors that transport nothing to nowhere.

Whole or broken, closed or open, here or there? When words no longer work, something has to take over. Open the box. Turn the handle. Meet your own eyes, or the eyes of a masked stranger. Play a game of exquisite corpse, build your own mismatched creature.

Maria Fox Larsson works at the intersection of graphic art, sculpture and DIY robotics with a growing focus on immersive experiences. Maria’s art explores emotion through technological means and is strongly inspired by folk automata, DIY values and aesthetics, 20th century absurdist art, and medieval manuscript marginalia.

For a long time, the key motif in Maria’s art was balance: order vs. chaos, logical regularity vs. breaks and irrational glitches, perfection vs. imperfection, rigidity vs. flexibility, strength vs. vulnerability, shelter vs. confinement. But since February 24th 2022, her art has been centered around the feelings of pain, guilt, anger, fear, frustration, crushed hopes, and absolute disagreement with the ongoing war – that’s what she now explores in her street art, drawings, sculptures and robotic installations. Whatever the medium, Maria’s pieces always manifest a subtle balance between visual simplicity and naiveté on the one hand – and elaborate craftsmanship on the other.

Maria’s works have been shown in Finland, Russia, the UK and the USA, including five solo exhibitions. She lives and works in Jakobstad, Finland. Maria is also a member and co-founder of “Artists 24” group and “24”, an independent artist-run gallery in St. Petersburg.

Aeon Luxin “Touch (gr)ass” – taidenäyttely B-gallerian Projektitilassa koostuu kolmesta piirrosanimaatioista, tekonurmesta ja keraamisesta veistoksesta. Näyttely käsittelee nettikulttuurin ja sosiaalisen median mielenterveydellisiä haittailmiöitä esoteerisesta näkökulmasta tietoisena toimintana kohti valaistumista.

Aeon Lux (s.1993 Karkkilassa) on seinäjokelainen usean median kuvataiteilija, joka tekee taidetta tutkiakseen todellisuuden luonnetta. Hänen teoskokonaisuuksilleen tyypillistä on tarinallisuus ja ajatusleikit vaihtoehtoisista todellisuuksista.

My grandma got me a puzzle game for my birthday and she was really proud of it like "I bought it in bokhandeln in Jakobstad! I know you used to love doing puzzles as a kid!"

So of course I said thank you and kept silent about the fact I'm a working adult now who has like. no time and no patience for doing a 1000 pieces puzzle. But not a week later I'm actually sitting there on the floor sorting puzzle pieces because this week has been shit and I have no energy to write after work but at least this way I can do some brainstorming in my head without having to sit down at the computer. Just like when I was a kid and didn't yet write down stories but thought them through in my head.

Intervjuprogram. Äldre kvinna, Marika Sundgren, sitter med yngre kvinna, Li Wikfors. Programmet heter Babbo. Bildövergångarna är långsamma, svepande.

MARIKA: Hej och, välkomna till Babbo. Sitter ni skönt där i sofforna där hemma? Kom ihåg att ni också kan se avsnittet på webben (skitstörande högljudd websymbol) — I alla fall, hjärtligt välkomna ska ni vara och Li, som debuterat med sin nya skiva Havregrynsriket. Välkommen Li.

LI: Tack, tack.

MARIKA: Såehm, fin titel för det första.

LI: Det tycker jag också.

MARIKA: Den är sådä, sådä, naturromantisk,

LI: Ja—

MARIKA: Och pastoral!

LI: Ja och så heter ju singeln också,

MARIKA: Ja.

LI: som kom ut på hösten.

MARIKA: Jaja, så det finns en låt på albumet som albumet är döpt efter.

LI: Ja.

MARIKA: Mmm.

En lite för lång paus. Li ser ut att säga något men Marika klipper av.

MARIKA: Och du e ju från, från,

LI: Jakobstad.

MARIKA: Där har jag varit, på julmarknaden.

LI: Jaså (nervöst leende), där har jag också varit.

MARIKA: Men dom har den int nåmer.

LI: Inte?

MARIKA: Eller int vet jag. Är den det?

LI: Jam—

MARIKA: Nåmenhej det var inte det vi skulle prata om, utan… (verkar ha glömt nånting, vevar i luften) vad är ditt stjärntecken?

LI: Fiskarna.

MARIKA: Ja…

LI: Borde vi—

MARIKA: Om du kunde resa nånstans på jorden gratis, vart skulle du åka?

LI: Alltså, det känns som att du kanske hoppat över albumet en aning.

MARIKA: Nej menar du det?

LI: Ja men, hade du någon låt du tyckte om?

MARIKA: Som jag tyckte om? Uhm, alltså, hav, havregrynsdiket.

LI: Diket?

MARIKA: Som är albumets namn alltså.

LI: Har du…lyssnat på albumet?

MARIKA: Så klart.

Li vet inte riktigt vad hon ska säga.

MARIKA: Spelade du in den här skivan själv?

LI: Jag hade några vänner som hjälpte till på vissa spår.

MARIKA: Jag gillar de där maracasserna.

LI: Det finns inga maracasser på albumet.

MARIKA: Men såna där t-tsch, t-tsch

LI: Det finns inget sånt.

MARIKA: Nä och, din nästa skiva kunde ha lite sånt.

LI: Hur skulle du beskriva min musik?

MARIKA: Hm?

LI: Min musik, vad är det för genre?

MARIKA: Sån där livlig, svängig,

Li besvarar inte den implicita ifyllnaden.

MARIKA: Dansband?

LI: Jag vet nog inte hur du får folk-cottage-dusk-wave att låta som dansband, men okej.

Li sjunker irriterad in mot sin stol.

MARIKA: Och jag har hört att du började spela musik redan i sexan.

Li håller på att plocka bort myggan.

LI: Jag vill avbryta.

MARIKA: Nej men varför då?

LI: Det är så oprofessionellt, faktiskt,

Li får av sig myggan och går off-stage. Marika blir sittandes i soffan.

Bildbyte. Smygfilmat, Marika står i dörröppningen till gästloungen, grälar högljutt med Li. Lis förolämpningar hörs knappt under Marikas ilskna monolog.

MARIKA: Tror du det är så jävla lätt för mig då? Att hålla reda på varenda lilla räka som kommer att glömmas bort om några månader ändå? Ja, gör det, ring min chef, ring du bara så ska han nog få höra OM HUR DUM OCH ILLALUKTANDE DU ÄR, JÄVLA KOSSA! MUUUU, MUUUU, MUUU.

Bilden stoppas, två barn kommer framför den projicerade bilden på väggen. De pekar.

BARNEN: Det där är inte okej. (tar varandras händer). Dialog.

Bildbyte. Smygfilmat bråk mellan barnen. Ett av barnen börjar tjuta som en luftsiren, ljudet går över i nästa scetch.
