Compare/Contrast of Zira and Gabriel Agreste AKA Hawkmoth
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok. Here I’ll be going over the similarities and differences between Zira from The Lion King 2 and Gabriel Agreste from Miraculous Tales Of Ladybug And Chat Noir. It occurred to me that these 2 have quite a bit in common but are still a little different. I think it should be noted that most of what I’m gonna say here about these 2 characters doesn’t apply to abusers that exist out there in the real world. After all, all abusers should either be locked away in prison and/or rehabilitated in a mental hospital. They hurt people. So, they must face the consequences for it. This post is supposed to be a compare/contrast between 2 fictional characters and nothing else. Another thing I’d like to note here is that here, I’ll be going over Zira as she was portrayed in The Lion King 2, The Lion Guard episode ‘Lions of the Pridelands’, and how she was interpreted in the YouTuber Isaac Carlson’s Zira’s FULL STORY (mixed with my theories) | The Lion King II: Discovering Disney YouTube video. Also, Spoiler Alert for the movie The Lion King 2, The Lion Guard, Isaac Carlson’s YouTube video and the TV series Miraculous Tales Of Ladybug And Chat Noir. With that said, let’s dive right in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of them are abusive parent(s) as shown in the song ‘My Lullaby’ and in the episode ‘Ladybug & Cat Noir Origins - Part 1’ respectively. The difference here though is that Zira is more physically abusive as demonstrated when she threw her son Nuka off a tall rock and that Gabriel is more emotionally abusive as demonstrated when he kept his son Adrien in their house for a very long time. Also, as shown in The Lion King 2 when Zira went against Kovu when he turned against her and when Zira threatened to kill her daughter Vitani when Vitani went against Zira’s methods and in the episode ‘Cat Blanc’ when Gabriel threw his son Adrien at the Eiffel Tower, psychologically tortured him and akumatized him after Gabriel found out Adrien was Cat Noir, both Zira and Gabriel are at one point even willing to go against and hurt their own children in order to accomplish their own goals.

Note: Credit for the The Lion King - Zira and Scar picture above belongs to the DeviantArt user Diego32Tiger.
Both of them have similar albeit different reasons why they became the way they are now. Both Zira and Gabriel became the way they are now because they’ve become too attached to the memory of the love of their life (I know Zira was never confirmed to be Scar’s mate but in the episode of the TV series The Lion Guard ‘Lions of the Outlands’, a cave painting did show Zira and Scar ruling the Pridelands together and in the same episode, it was confirmed that Scar taught Zira about the Roar of the Elders and also that Zira claimed she and Scar were close. All this indicates there was something romantic going on between Zira and Scar. So, for this post, I’m gonna call Scar Zira’s love interest; It should be noted that credit for all this belongs to the people who worked on Zira’s page for the Disney Wiki) as shown in The Lion King 2 and the episode ‘Style Queen’ respectively. Zira became too attached to the memory of her love interest Scar while Gabriel became too attached to the memory of his wife Emilie. They both are going way too far in fighting in Scar’s and Emilie’s names. The difference here though is that Scar abused Zira into believing in him and while it is admittedly unknown what exactly Gabriel’s relationship with Emilie was like, it’s implied throughout the TV series that it was a relatively good one. Another difference between Zira and Gabriel in this regard is the tragedies that struck for both of their relationships. Zira was abused by her love interest Scar as I said before while Gabriel’s wife Emilie fell into a permanent coma. The similarity here though between Zira and Gabriel is that they were both too weak willed to handle the trauma of those tragedies. However, they responded to their trauma in 2 different ways that caused them to become the villains they are now. Zira responded to her trauma by bending it into rage and thus later swearing revenge after getting banished to the Outlands while Gabriel responded to his trauma by drowning himself in his love for Emilie to the point of it becoming an obsession and thus later vowing to wake Emilie up again with almost no care about who he has to manipulate and/or destroy in the process. Zira is too focused on her rage while Gabriel is too focused on his love. Zira was lost in the raging and rough ocean waves while Gabriel was lost in the dehydrating salt water of the ocean itself. However, that doesn’t mean they don’t still have people they care about. Speaking of which…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of them have similar albeit different relationships with their children. Both Zira and Gabriel want their children Kovu and Adrien to be something that suits their organization’s needs. Zira wants her adopted son Kovu to be a vicious killer that can help Zira and her pride of lions defeat Simba while Gabriel wants Adrien to be a model that can model for Gabriel’s company’s brand as shown in The Lion King 2 and the episode ‘Frightningale’ respectively. Also, as I said earlier in this post, Zira and Gabriel are both abusive to their children. That being said, Zira and Gabriel still deep down genuinely care about their children.
For Zira, an example of her caring about her children was shown when she comforted her son Nuka just before his death. I think the reason why Zira was abusive to Nuka earlier despite the care Zira showed him just before his death is that Zira was so blinded by her rage and anger that she forgot about Nuka. There’s also the fact that Zira was once an abuse victim of Scar. So, that means that Zira is a case of the abused becoming the abuser. I think I have a metaphor that could explain what’s going on judging by the fact that Zira was an abuse victim who became an abuser herself. This is where I’m gonna get a bit philosophical. Keep in mind, though, that I really don’t know much about how abuse works. So, I think it’s best to take what I’m gonna say here with a grain of salt. Picture an abuser as the malicious monster and the abused as the evil monster’s potential prey. There are 3 ways that a confrontation between the 2 would end. 1. The evil monster tears the potential prey apart and eats him or her alive. That’s my metaphor for if the abused victim completely succumbs to the abuser’s torture and succumbs to complete and utter despair and depression. 2. The evil monster bites the potential prey and thus infects the potential prey and turns him or her into an evil monster, also. That’s my metaphor for if the abused victim becomes an abuser him or herself at least partly because of being abused by an abuser. 3. The potential prey overcomes the trauma caused by the malicious monster and defeats the evil monster. That’s my metaphor for if the abused victim completely overcomes the torture and trauma caused by the abuser. Zira fits the #2 metaphor. The evil monster Scar infected his prey Zira and thus Zira became an evil monster herself. Zira went from being an abused victim to being an abuser herself. However, the 3 metaphors I listed above may all be different paths but they all began from the same starting point. That starting point is the potential prey letting out his or her initial cries as he or she was getting stalked by the evil monster. That would be my metaphor for the abuse victim’s initial cries as he or she was starting to get tortured by the abuser. What I’m getting at here is that Zira let out her initial cries when she was left completely insecure by the environment around her and later when Scar took advantage of that and abused her (I’ll elaborate on that in my next and final point). And those initial cries continued to echo throughout her being even after she became an abuser. So, Zira became an abuser but the initial cries of the abused victim she once was temporarily snapped out of her evil fog when she saw her son Nuka was about to die. However, the abuse from Scar’s manipulation still dug deep. So, Zira’s trauma from seeing her son Nuka die combined with Scar’s influence caused Zira to blame her son Kovu for killing Nuka since Kovu sided with Simba which inadvertently led to the disaster that killed Nuka and also caused Zira to take her pride of lions to face off against Simba and the lions that resides in the Pridelands. But Kiara and Kovu intervened. Kiara and Kovu wanted the 2 groups of lions to coexist in peace. Zira was disgusted by the idea. When Zira’s daughter Vitani was moved by the idea and went along with it, Zira threatened to kill her. During all the events from when Nuka died to when Vitani betrayed Zira, the pain of the abused victim and the pure rage and controlling nature of the abuser merged into one. Zira’s inner victim’s trauma from losing her son Nuka now fueled her inner abuser’s rage and desire to avenge Scar and Zira’s inner abuser’s rage and desire to avenge Scar tricked Zira’s inner victim into helping to avenge Scar. Zira’s inner victim and inner abuser merged into one but her inner abuser was the one that was in complete control.
For Gabriel, examples of him caring for his child are shown when he told Gorizilla to drop Ladybug in order for Ladybug to save Adrien from plummeting to his death and finally allowed Adrien to watch the movie Emilie appeared in alongside Gabriel in the episode ‘Gorizilla’, when he allowed Adrien to go see his friends after playing the piano with Adrien in the episode ‘Captain Hardrock’, when he briefly gave up on being Hawkmoth partly because he didn’t want to put his son in further danger in the episode ‘Queen Wasp’, when he tried to tell his Akuma villain YanLuoShi to stop when he realized Adrien might get hurt in the TV special Miraculous World: Shanghai, and when he stopped himself from akumatizing someone when he realized that someone was Adrien in the episode ‘Glaciator 2’. I know this is inconsistent with how he’s portrayed in the episodes ‘Cat Blanc’ and ‘Ephemeral’ where he emotionally manipulated Adrien and then akumatized him against his will. It gets even more inconsistent with how Gabriel was way more shocked when he found out his son Adrien was Cat Noir in the episode ‘Wishmaker’ just before Viperion reversed time than he was when he found out Adrien was Cat Noir in the 2 alternate timelines in the episodes ‘Cat Blanc’ and ‘Ephemeral’. These days, I believe it’s just yet another example of the TV series’s bad writing. After all, it wouldn’t be much of a stand-out considering the way Chloe Bourgeois’s redemption arc was wasted and destroyed in Season 3 and Season 4 and the way Adrien Agreste hardly gets the spotlight compared to Marinette Dupain-Cheng despite his character being more interesting and his story being more plot relevant. But for the sake of this post, I’m gonna give a more in-universe explanation. So, I think the reason why Gabriel was nothing more than the textbook example of an abusive parent is because Gabriel spiraled further down into his obsession with bringing his wife back. I think this downward spiral started in the episode ‘Stormy Weather 2’ where it was shown that Gabriel is being dishonest with himself when he told himself he was doing it all to Adrien happy. But the lack of sincerity in his tone at least suggests that Gabriel is doing it at least mainly for himself. In the episode ‘Cat Blanc’, Adrien started dating Marinette Dupain-Cheng and was thus already happy. This contradiction with Gabriel’s excuse that he’s doing it all to make Adrien happy probably caused Gabriel’s self-dishonesty to skyrocket through the roof. This caused Gabriel to still think he was doing it for Adrien despite the fact that he was willing to emotionally torture and then akumatize Adrien into an Akuma villain named Cat Blanc. It’s also probably what caused Gabriel to be willing to emotionally torture and akumatize Adrien immediately after he found out Adrien was Cat Noir. In the case of what happened in the episode ‘Ephemeral’, it’s different. In the episode ‘Ephemeral’, Gabriel probably became willing to hurt and akumatize his son Adrien only sometime after, rather than immediately after, he found out Adrien was Cat Noir. I think this because in the episode ‘Cat Blanc’, Gabriel smiled maliciously immediately after finding out Adrien was Cat Noir. However, Gabriel didn’t smile immediately after finding out Adrien was Cat Noir in the episode ‘Ephemeral’. I think this means that Gabriel was still wrapping his head around the fact that his son was Cat Noir and spiraled downward into his self-dishonesty and also his malice as the night went on. In my opinion, the change of scenes kinda implied that a few hours passed since Gabriel found out before he decided to emotionally torture and akumatize Adrien that time around. It still doesn’t excuse let alone justifies what Gabriel did to Adrien in ‘Cat Blanc’ and ‘Ephemeral’, though.
So, both Zira and Gabriel are abusive parents that still genuinely care about their children. The difference here though is that when Zira went up against her own children, it was out of heartbreak and rage while when Gabriel goes up against his own child, it’s out of self-dishonesty and malice. So, in conclusion, Zira was an abuse victim that became an abuser herself but there was still some remnants of the abuse victim she was at the starting point left inside her and that more or less allowed her to temporarily look past her evil ways in order to care for her son in his final moments but Zira’s inner abuser merged with her inner victim with the inner abuser taking complete control of it all thus causing Zira to turn against her son Kovu and her daughter Vitani when they stood against her. So, in conclusion, Gabriel was a victim of tragedy that genuinely loves his child but at least will turn into an abuser with no traces of the victim left inside him that will take complete and utter advantage of his son Adrien without any hint of regret or remorse. Zira and Gabriel were too fanatically devoted to their goals at the expense of their children. Speaking of that…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s one final similarity I see between Zira and Gabriel. They both are at least partly motivated by the same thing: fanaticism to the people they can’t let go of. For Zira, it’s her fanaticism to Scar. For Gabriel, it’s his fanaticism to Emilie. For Zira, this was demonstrated in full force when she lashed out at Simba for rejecting Kovu as the heir since he was only approved by Scar who was not the rightful ruler of the Pridelands. For Gabriel, this was demonstrated in full force in the episode ‘Risk (Shadow Moth’s Final Attack - Part 1)’, when he was wallowing to Emilie about how he was unworthy of their love since he failed again and again to obtain Ladybug’s and Cat Noir’s Miraculouses, lost his temper and, as a result, accidentally cracked Emilie’s pod which was keeping her alive (or keeping her body from decomposing until Gabriel can wake her up; it wasn’t exactly revealed which one is the case in the TV series just yet). For Zira, I think another example of this was shown when Zira raised her child Kovu to avenge Scar. For Gabriel, another example of this was shown in the episode ‘Dearest Family’ when it was revealed that Gabriel is planning to destroy the entire world and create a new one where their family will never be apart again. The difference between them here though is that Zira doesn’t focus any amount of attention on anyone or anything other than Scar and Zira’s children while Gabriel, on the other hand, focuses an amount of attention on someone other than Emilie and Gabriel’s child: Nathalie Sancoeur. I also think that it was hinted at just how obsessed Zira was with Scar in Isaac Carlson’s Zira’s FULL STORY (mixed with my theories) | The Lion King II: Discovering Disney video. In it, Isaac Carlson believes that Zira grew up being insecure about her weak strength compared to the other lionesses. Isaac Carlson also believed that when Scar began ruling the Pridelands, it gave Zira hope that her life would change just as much as the Pridelands did after the beginning of Scar’s reign. Isaac Carlson would go on to say that the strict schedules that Scar gave the lionesses made Zira feel like she had purpose and it caused her to long for the attention of Scar. Isaac Carlson also said that when Scar gave Zira the news that Zira’s son Kovu was gonna be Scar’s heir, Zira felt right with the world. Scar abused Zira’s insecurities and her need for purpose in order to gain her loyalty. If Scar means this much to Zira, that means that Zira most likely didn’t trust anyone other than Scar and her children. In the case of her children, they’re a legacy Zira left behind. So, it makes sense that Zira would pay attention to them given her own need for purpose. Given the way Zira comforted her son Nuka just before his death, Zira must have formed a genuine bond with her children somewhere along the way. Gabriel, on the other hand, has a lot of faith in Nathalie as shown in the short Miraculous Secrets Nathalie As Seen By Gabriel when he said to Emilie that Nathalie will be able to help him succeed. Furthermore, Gabriel does genuinely care about Nathalie as shown in the episode ‘Mayura (Heroes’ Day - Part 2)’, when it was revealed that Gabriel told Nathalie to never use the damaged Peacock Miraculous since he knew that it could kill her. Gabriel also sometimes listens to Nathalie as shown in the Christmas special ‘Santa Claws’ when he took Nathalie’s advice that he needed to go see Adrien since it was Adrien’s first Christmas without his mother Emilie. Gabriel even threw away an opportunity to akumatize a group of people when he saw that Nathalie was getting ill again as shown in the episode ‘Ladybug’. So, Zira doesn’t have anyone other than her family and her idol/love interest while Gabriel, on the other hand, does.
These are the similarities and differences I see between Zira and Gabriel.
Thanks for reading.

Zack Beauchamp at Vox:
The New York Times once described Tucker Carlson’s Fox News hour as “the most racist show in the history of cable news.” In the past week, allegations of bigotry involving his new show on X have come from a rather different corner: his fellow conservatives. The fight started April 9, when Carlson published a friendly interview with Palestinian pastor Munther Isaac. The pastor — who has reportedly praised the “strength” of the October 7 attackers — argued that Israel is no friend to Christians: It bombs them in Gaza, represses them in the West Bank, and restricts their ability to proselytize inside Israel proper. The interview went viral, receiving over 30,000 reposts so far. Erick Erickson, a prominent radio host and former Carlson ally, spoke for many on the right when he labeled Tucker a “pro-Hamas” ally of “the antisemites on college campuses, and the terrorist-supporting progressives of the American left.” Carlson has, according to Erickson, become “willing to use his platform and formerly earned trust and reputation to persuade the easily manipulated to believe the lies he used to rail against.”
Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) wrote a blistering post on X that attempted to banish Carlson from the conservative movement entirely. “Tucker’s MO is simple: defend America’s enemies and attack America’s allies. There isn’t an objective bone left in that washed up news host’s body,” Crenshaw wrote. “Tucker will eventually fade into nothingness, because his veneer of faux intellectualism is quickly falling apart and revealing who he truly is: a cowardly, know-nothing elitist who is full of shit.” While Erickson and Crenshaw are seen as more establishment-friendly voices nowadays, the outrage at Carlson was shared even by some in the right’s Trumpier corners: Even the sorts of people who oppose Ukraine aid laid into the former Fox host after the Isaac interview. Only an openly antisemitic fringe of the conservative movement — the so-called Groypers — seem to be gleeful, believing that pitting Israel against Christians can bring old-school European Jew hatred to contemporary America.
“It’s waking people up. It’s making people aware of the fundamentals — which is first and foremost that Jews are not Christians,” said Nick Fuentes, the leading voice of the Groypers. “Once you get into those basics, you can start to build upon that and get to where we are.” So is what Carlson suggests about Israel and Christians accurate? And what does the right-wing backlash against him say about the state of the conservative movement today? Broadly, I think there are basically three key answers to these questions:
It’s true that Palestinian Christians are suffering, though it’s largely because they are Palestinians rather than because they are Christians. Carlson’s message, however, does less to draw attention to the plight of the Palestinians than to pit Jews against Christians.
In trying to excommunicate Carlson, conservatives are pretending that he’s changed — but he’s really the same guy he always has been. The antisemitic and otherwise bigoted things he said on Fox were far worse than anything in the Isaac interview and received only a fraction of the internal right-wing condemnation.
Carlson is exploiting legitimate criticism of Israel to fan the flames of Christian antisemitism, which has become a growing problem on the right even as much public attention recently has focused on the left wing.
Israel doesn’t persecute Christians, but it does oppress Palestinians
Christians are a small minority inside Israel — about 2 percent of the total population. But this mostly Arab group’s numbers are growing, and they tend to do better than their Muslim peers in socioeconomic terms. A 2021 report from Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics found that Israeli Christians were more likely to get a college degree and less likely to be on welfare attainment than Muslims and even Jews. Israeli law guarantees formal freedom of religion, and there are no legal restrictions on Christian worship. There is some restriction on missionary activity, but that typically only affects travel visas for foreigners rather than Christians living in Israel. No one in the country has been prosecuted for missionary activity. That’s not to say Israeli Christians have no problems. Jewish extremists occasionally harass Christians in Jerusalem, and there are tensions surrounding the city’s holy sites. Danny Seidemann, a leading expert on Jerusalem, has warned that settler plans for the city threaten the historic Christian presence there. But this, per Seidemann, is less a reflection of hostility toward Christians per se than it is a reflection of the generalized settler goal to control all the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.
But while the Israeli state does not officially discriminate against Israeli Christians, it does oppress Palestinians — and Palestinian Christians suffer along with their Muslim brethren. From churches bombed in Gaza to Israel’s “security barrier” cutting right through Bethlehem, Palestinian Christians experience Israeli occupation the same way that other Palestinians do: as violence and unfreedom. “The major threat to Christian communities and institutions is dismissiveness. They’re not seen,” Seidemann writes. “What’s seen are Palestinians and Arabs who are always suspected terrorists.” Most of Isaac’s comments in the Carlson interview were focused on explaining how the general cruelty of the occupation hurts Palestinian Christians. But Carlson’s additions — such as saying Israel is “blowing up churches and killing Christians” — go a bit further. He suggests that Israel is targeting Christians as a class, and that the Jewish state is fundamentally hostile to Christianity.
[...] From openly espousing the “great replacement” conspiracy theory to suggesting that immigrants to the United States are dirty and diseased to peddling the same sort of antisemitic lies that motivated the 2018 Tree of Life synagogue shooting, Carlson consistently worked to make some of the most dangerous fringe ideas in American politics palatable to mainstream Republicans. This flirtation with antisemitism isn’t a break from Carlson’s longstanding persona but an extension of it.
The internal conservative discourse on Carlson is thus both substantively and psychologically revealing. Substantively, it shows that the right is willing to forgive or downplay antisemitism unless it’s somehow linked to criticism of Israel — in which case there’s a zero-tolerance policy. Psychologically, it shows there is a powerful need to reconcile conservatives’ previous love of Carlson with the reality of who he is, requiring implausible contortions about his changing radically after leaving Fox.
[...]
The right’s growing antisemitism problem
In the past few years, the Groypers have looked more influential than many on the more mainstream right seem to appreciate. In 2022, Nick Fuentes finagled an invite to Mar-a-Lago and had dinner with Donald Trump. More recently, popular podcaster Candace Owens has outed herself as a Groyper-adjacent antisemite. While this turn led to her departure from the right-wing Daily Wire, it also showed how much the movement has made inroads on the broader right. During the Owens saga, Daily Wire CEO Jeremy Boreing sat down for a conversation with Fuentes that was streamed on X. Speaking to a man he had once called “a wicked little s**t with evil ideas,″ Boreing praised Fuentes as a “most talented” and “very funny” broadcaster — and invited him to be a guest on a Daily Wire show. There’s a lot of evidence that right-wing antisemitism is rising. While much attention has been paid (rightly) to left-wing antisemitism after October 7, academic research suggests that antisemitic attitudes are disproportionately concentrated among right-wing young adults. Right-wing extremists are responsible for nearly all of the deadly attacks on Jews and Jewish institutions in recent years. Trump’s own rhetoric has long been rife with antisemitic stereotypes and conspiracy theories.
Tucker Carlson, like Candace Owens, has learned that criticizing Israel in right-wing media spaces comes at a great cost. Even before his recent interview with Palestinian pastor Munther Isaac, Carlson has pushed antisemitic tropes.

Getting MAGA to Quit Fascisting America: Follow-the-Leader and Minority Influence
With Giorgia Meloni ascending to be PM of Italy and conservative America suddenly all agog about Europe, you have to wonder, how we can convince conservative voters to give up fascisting America? What has to happen to get them to quit MAGA?
The REAL Problem with Promoting Racism and Violence: the Buffalo Mass Shooting With the election of the fascist, Giorgia Meloni, as Italy’s next prime minister, we have the next great big flashing alarm warning us that fascism is once again raising its ugly head from the swamp we vanquished it to in the 1940’s. Even as she proclaims herself as no danger to democracy — at least no more than…

As someone who’s favourite character is Varian I’m not a really big fan of Varian and the Seven Kingdoms I use to like it when it first came out but not anymore and I know the creator has long since moved past it.
The whole thing felt very fandon and just didn’t really make sense for the world. And I didn’t feel any attachment to the new character introduced in it especially Hugo.
I also really didn’t like what they did with Varian’s mom. Just the idea that she picked up and left Quirin and there son. There was an interview done with the creator of the au and Isaac Carlson. And they basically went on to say that they made Varian’s mom the bad guy as a way to show were Varian gets his dark side from. And that really just rubbed me the wrong way. (It was apparently the original show creators idea)
This is no hate to the creator of the au but it just wasn’t for me.
And that's fine. It's literally not for everyone, and no one is expecting it to be. I'm not particularly interested in it, myself. I reblogged the factual stuff from Kay back in the day, and the most recent thing they said about it, and I will occasionally reblog fanart if I really like it (but I have to really like it), but that's purely aesthetic. Otherwise, I'm completely uninterested in it.
And yes, the TTS showrunner was a huge fan of "evil biological parents make evil children, even if they didn't raise them for most of their life." Hence... Cassandra.

by Isaac Schorr
Much of the overtly antisemitic rhetoric and action across the West has been situated on the left, and conservatives have rightly pointed out as much, chalking up the deluge of hatred and wickedness on display to fallacious progressive theory.
But there is a cohort on the right complicit in this great reawakening of an ancient evil.
And that brings us back to Owens and Carlson.
The past few weeks have seen Owens repeat a series of blood libels.
In one breath, she’s implied the Israeli government is committing a genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
In the next, she’s submitted that Jerusalem’s historic Muslim Quarter (population: 22,000) is a ghetto where the city’s Muslims (population: 350,000) are forced to live.
After being called out on her ignorant smears by her Daily Wire colleague Ben Shapiro, Owens responded on X.
“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake,” wrote Owens, quoting the Book of Matthew’s fifth chapter.
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other,” she added.
“You cannot serve both God and money. Christ is King.”
And just like that, the mask clinging to her face by a thread fell off.
Shapiro, she argued without evidence and hardly any plausible deniability, had forsaken righteousness for wealth; is there a more textbook example of an antisemitic charge?
When Shapiro responded by reminding Owens she’s welcome to stop taking a paycheck from their company if it’s threatening her soul, Owens hid behind her Bible verse.
“You are utterly out of line for suggesting that I cannot quote biblical scripture,” she cried, affixing another performative “Christ is King” to her digital flop.
Then on Wednesday night, Carlson released a fawning interview of Owens in which both professed not to know why Shapiro had criticized her in the first place.
Carlson brought up the feud by playing the video of Shapiro “attacking” Owens stripped of all context.
When he asked Owens what might have inspired it, she insisted that “there isn’t much of a background” to it.
Later, Carlson said that while he was “horrified” by Hamas’ attack, he thought that “the emotional response” to it from “some commentators” was “disproportionate.”

March 2024 Books
Norby, the Mixed-Up Robot by Janet and Isaac Asimov
This one was a lot of fun! I should track down the rest of the series.
The World's Greatest Detective by Caroline Carlson
I was very confused about what era this world was mimicking (are they Victorian? 1920s/30s?), but it was a fun story and I enjoyed the dynamic between the protagonists.
A Dig in Time by Peni R. Griffin
I remember liking this one, but it feels like I read it years ago and I can't remember everything. Time travel with a family emphasis.
The Promise by Monica Hughes
Like Sandwriter, which this is a sequel to, I initially wasn't so sure that I liked this one, and then it went in an unexpected direction that took the themes in a more complex place, and I appreciated that.
The Yellow Fairy Book by Andrew Lang
I generally like fairy tales well enough, but this one was rather a slog to get through, and I ended up skimming a lot of it. There were some familiar favorites, but a lot of the tales were of the variety that consist of an interesting set-up followed by a seemingly incoherent series of events, and I regret I don't have enough interest in folklore to get much out of that.
The Romance of a Shop by Amy Levy
Interesting from a historic perspective mostly, but I didn't connect much with the story.
The Secret Garden of Yanagi Inn by Amber A. Logan (reread)
Reread so it would be fresh in my mind before the presentation. You already know how I feel about this one.
The Humming Room by Ellen Potter (reread)
Same as above. I have a post in drafts with some thoughts on this one that may eventually see daylight.
The Making of May by Gwyneth Rees (reread)
Already discussed this one.
A Bit of Earth by Karuna Riazi (reread)
Beautifully written and very readable and develops its themes well. Does fall into the trap of making the story about grief (Maria's late parents were frequently absent from her life, and she resents this, but she did have relationships with them in ways that her counterpart in the original book never did with her parents, so it's a completely different dynamic). I found this Colin to be somewhat underdeveloped, but I did appreciate the concept of his being fearful about failing to live up to family expectation, which is a reasonable translation of the original character's source of shame.
Charley by Joan G. Robinson
I don't remember much of this one. Didn't have any problems, just didn't have as much impact as other books by this author have for me.
Greenwild by Pari Thomson
A very derivative example of the Child Learns That They Are Magical And Special And Enters A Fantastical World Where They Must Take On The Villain sort of story. I wanted to enjoy it, but everything felt trite.
Doctor Who: A Brief History of Time Lords by Steve Tribe
This was a gift from my brother. I am a very casual DW fan and haven't really engaged with the show in quite a while (really should rewatch and catch up on new stuff but that's a pretty big time commitment right now). I think I would have got a lot more out of this if I were more than passingly familiar with Classic Who and all the lore in general.
Not Quite a Ghost by Anne Ursu
I was interested in this one because it's a retelling of "The Yellow Wallpaper," and the concept of comparing the difficulties of getting difficult-to-trace chronic illnesses taken seriously and diagnosed in today's world to the mishandling of women's medical and psychological conditions in the late nineteenth century intrigued me. However, this book didn't really know what it wanted to be. The young protagonist's struggles with her mystery chronic illness took up most of the book, but there was also a plot about a literal ghost in the wallpaper of her new attic bedroom that needs to be defeated in the end, and neither of these things fitted well together. One or the other of them would have been fine, but the combination left me confused about the nature of this fictional world and the themes of the book in general.
Comics/Graphic Novels
Benevolent Sisters of Charity (Over the Garden Wall)
This is the only one of the OTGW comics that I wasn't able to buy before it went out of print, so I ILLed it and realized that it was for the better that I hadn't. The story was incoherent and pointless and the characters were OOC. The art was much better than the story deserved.
Wayne Family Adventures Vol. 3
I've read these as a webcomic already but wanted it in book form too. These are entertaining; you just have to go into it aware that this is The Fluffy World version of everybody and they are characterized accordingly.
The Flash by Grant Morrison & Mark Millar
Not on a level with Waid's work, of course, but the highlight of this one was the storyline in which Linda dies and Wally manages to bring her back (some good Bart content here) and a delightfully meta short story in which Mark Millar meets up with Wally to figure out what story about him to tell next...and Wally is given a co-writing credit in the end.
The Flash by Mark Waid Books Seven and Eight
An effective end to this run. Waid points out in his Afterword that he's still got another story on reserve, so...anytime he wants to give that to us, that would be great. I'll be waiting.
The Secret Garden on 81st Street: A Modern Retelling of the Secret Garden by Ivy Noelle Weir (reread)
You know how I feel about this one. (I whipped it out at the convention to show somebody who was talking to me about CEN in the present day through leaving one's child to technology that that concept was used in this retelling, and somebody nearby oohed about what a diverse retelling it was as I flipped through pages. Which is, you know, more important than effective storytelling. It should have done both! We could have had both!)
Stephen McCranie's Space Boy Omnibus Volume 5
I've read this in webcomic form already, but it's a pleasure to have a physical copy of the latest omnibus.
Sinister Sons #1-2 plus additional material establishing the backgrounds of Lor-Zod and Sinson
A sort of response to the series Super Sons (which featured Jon Kent at his proper age and Damian Wayne), by the same author. This is going to be about a teamup of Lor-Zod (son of General Zod, was Chris Kent in another continuity, has apparently been Zukoed in this incarnation) and Sinson (a young, apparently orphaned thief who believes that his father must be Sinestro, the Green Lantern's arch-nemesis). So far the boys haven't done much more than fight, but I'm interested to see where this is going. (#3 is in the mail now!)
Lor is a horrid little piece of work, but his parents' recent treatment of him puts him in a more sympathetic situation, and I am hoping he'll get a redemption arc that would move him closer to his original version. Sinson is no angel either, but he's just a child who really, really wants a family and is clinging to the only hope for one that he has--and if that means he's a supervillain's son, then he's ready to follow in those footsteps to gain acceptance.
(Also he drew a mustache on himself with a black marker to look more like his alleged father, and that's so ridiculous and kind of endearing.)

Hunter Biden's legal team went on the offensive Wednesday, demanding state and federal investigations into the dissemination of his personal material — purported to be from his laptop — and threatening a defamation lawsuit against Fox News' Tucker Carlson for allegedly failing to correct false statements.
The flurry of letters to the Delaware attorney general, the Department of Justice, the IRS and attorneys for Fox News and Carlson represent an aggressive new strategy for the president's son, who is facing long-running federal criminal investigations, as well as new probes promised by congressional Republicans, according to a source familiar with Biden's approach.
"This marks a new approach by Hunter Biden and his team," the source told CBS News. "He is not going to sit quietly by as questionable characters continue to violate his rights and media organizations peddling in lies try to defame him."
Attorneys for Hunter Biden called for Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings and U.S. Assistant Attorney General for National Security Matthew G. Olsen to launch investigations into the actions of former computer repair shop owner John Paul Mac Isaac, former Trump advisers Rudy Giuliani and Stephen Bannon, their attorney Robert Costello and others "for whom there is considerable reason to believe violated various Delaware laws in accessing, copying, manipulating, and/or disseminating Mr. Biden's personal computer data."
Abbe Lowell, an attorney for Hunter Biden, said in a statement to CBS News that the letters "do not confirm Mac Isaac's or others' versions of a so-called laptop."

•My thoughts on VAT7K•
-So What's VAT7K?
It's basicly just a Concept idea of a graphic novel for Varian from Tangled, it was rejected by disney.(Now i whouldn't even known about it if Isaac Carlson hasn't done a video about so yey ig)
-The new Characters
•Ulla
•Nuru
•Hugo
•Donella
•Yong
•Cyrus
(now i don't like Hugo's hair + he looks very modern but That's just me, but i will say i do like Nuru's design tho, and Yong is forgettable as heck)
-The storyline
So what i got from this is that Donella and Ulla where reserch partners or something then Donella "killed" Ulla by traping her in a library or whatever and Varian some how finds her and She tried to possess his body and at the end dies anyway///and along the way he meets 3 people from other Kingdoms (even tho there are 7kingdoms) Anyway Hugo was supposed to be like Eugene (even tho i don't think so but i'l get to that later) Like first a thief and then Varian's love interest. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-My opinion on the story
I don't like Varian's mum. Why? Well mainly because i do not care about her, really nothing in the series Made me care about her, just let her stay dead (or just explain what happend) + i do not think that Varian needs a spin off or novel•(ofc if it actualy makes sense then I'm fine with that)• i mean he got his Happily ever after, and i whould like to see a Cassandra spin off.
-Varigo
Personally i do not like Hugo. The ship is based on stereotypes, "UwU smol bean" and "Alpha Bad boy". It's pretty toxic. And in fanfics Varian is usually potrayed as innocent and Hugo aggressivly flirting with him and calling him "Sweetcheeks"...yeah pretty gross if you ask me. He gives some fans predator vibes. And Hugo Also is apparently "smarter" even tho not backing Up that claim.
-Not canon
I think a lot of fans of this novel forget that it is not canon (yes not even the name "Ulla" is Canon.) If you write a fanfiction even using the name "Ulla" please tag it as #VAT7K because it is an Au. Infact if you ship Varigo you are basicly shipping Varian with an OC. It's The same as Varian and Lashanie. And fans Also spread a lot of misinformation.
-Will VAT7K ever be Canon?
No. No it won't. There was too much spoiled for that. (But i mean if you like it there is still fanfiction)
-My finale thoughts.
Lets just say i am more Mad about the 5 missing episodes from Season 3 then this novel getting rejected. It's much better as just an AU in my opinion.
|Btw if you come after me saying "why don't you block the tag if you don't like it" then yes i have the tag blocked. But i Can still see it cuz of improper taging.|
So what do you think about VAT7K? Like it? Hate it?

I saw this on the news today, but how did this happen?
youtube
This WOULD be true if the Chameleon would use her shapeshifting powers for the villains to return when they ACTUALLY will not return….
Here in this vid says an explanation by Isaac Carlson about this situation for the upcoming DreamWorks movie .
Post a reply on your thoughts! I’d be pleased to see them.

...Hunter Biden is going after John Paul Mac Isaac, Rudy Giuliani, his attorney Robert Costello, Stephen K. Bannon, Garrett Ziegler, Jack Maxey and Yaacov Apelbaum.
In a separate letter, Biden’s attorneys have also asked Fox News host Tucker Carlson to retract and apologize for what they say are false and defamatory claims made repeatedly about him on-air, including implying without evidence that he had unauthorized access to classified documents found at his father’s home.
