“the submarine trip was stupid and rooted in classism”, “it’s absolutely hideous how much more manpower was put into saving and reporting on them vs the 500 migrants who died in a similar horrible fashion”, and “despite their actions, no human being (especially not a nineteen year old) should deserve to die like this, especially when their death will not actually herald any positive change/abolishment of the billionaire class” are three thoughts than can and should coexist. you don’t have to mourn their deaths, but you don’t need to celebrate them, either.

I feel like the root problem of american tankies' shallow ideals is redirected american exceptionalism. Internet and globalization has caused them to realize that that they're not in fact the best country in the world as school etc has told them. But instead of understanding that they have problems just like the rest of us (though tbf, their ability to cause other nations harm is unmatched) they now flipped to saying that the us must be the worst country in the entire world and the source of all evil. They cannot comprehend that non-americans are perfectly capable of doing the most heinous shit and thus assume that behind every war or conflict lies a us conspiracy and influence - because surely non-americans are just so innocent, naive and primitive and unlike americans lack the cunning to advance their political goals without help by the US. The fact that not only the US government but also its enemies can be vile at the same time and that sometimes they can even be on the good side is completely beyond them which is why they are never truly against imperialism, genocide or opression unless it is done by americans or their allies.

You know, I think it’s so ironic (and fucking sickening) that the same so called “leftists” and “progressives” who were criticizing the Nazi being invited into the Canadian Parliament and given a standing ovation, are the same people spreading absolutely horrible antisemitic dogma during these times. And they say it SO unflinchingly, things like “Jews control the media that’s why no ones reporting more fairly for Palestine” or “Why are Israeli Jewish people scared, they can just go to their second home in New York hahaha”. Do they just not see how disturbing and antisemitic that actually is???? If you have the balls to spread such harmful conspiracy theories, than maybe you never gave a shit about the Nazi in Parliament, maybe you just care more about what supports your ideology and feelings than actual, living people.

I kept thinking about Gladis and her crew, and felt inspired to make some new shirts. Many different style/color combos available now at Glitch Goods and they all benefit Oceana to help the very mistreated home of our vengeful sea comrades.

As a leftist, having ‘good intentions’ is not enough.
You need to be fucking educated.
Your intentions mean NOTHING, without accurate knowledge and education abt minorities, you’re just doomed to repeat harmful propaganda without A) being able to spot it and B) more prone to justifying your bigotry and biases via ‘I’m trying to be morally correct so I’ll just believe whatever makes me feel good 🥺🥺🥺’ which just results in you confirming and perpetrating you own biases.
Like… I have a migraine now. I just spent 2 HOURS explaining the history of antisemitism in europe to my mum and educating her about jewish stereotypes and the history/cultural context behind it cause she’s a typical well-meaning-but uneducated leftist who thinks that spewing antisemitic rhetoric is somehow ‘helping Palestine’ i think the fuck not! bitch ur literally european how the fuck are you NOT familiar with the BS myths and legends behind antisemitism… thought it was common knowledge but I suppose people are generally less educated than i thought????? ugh.
Being a leftist doesn’t automatically make you a good person, or ‘correct’ or even morally correct.
You gotta actually fucking learn about history, and various cultures, and the context behind different types of bigotry if you want to avoid repeating it.
Everybody thinks they’re ‘morally correct’. Nazis think their actions are morally justifiable.
Being a leftist isn’t about being ‘morally correct’.

you can find something to be a real asshole move without also thinking it needs to be made illegal. this seems especially prescient with the rise of AI discourse.

You know, the current mess around the I/P situation reminds me of something that happened after the Charlie Hebdo attack, and even a bit more after the Bataclan attack.
We had people in the International Left, Americans and non-French Europeans (Scandinavian countries were pretty well represented in that movement back then) telling us French that we deserved it, that if we hadn't been oh so terribly oppressive to our Muslim population then there wouldn't have been terror attacks. There was no examination of the ideology of the terrorists, no taking into account their motivations, no looking at their VALUES. Just ... France bad, terrorists good.
And let's not talk about how the Muslim/Arab world reacted to those attacks ...
Oh it wasn't everyone, there were a lot of voices that offered support ... and then picked up the same criticism as the terrorist fan club, in the same tone, word for word, without looking at the actual situation or what lead to it, not even a week later. Showing that they had the same assumption that France was being EVIIIIIL to Muslims for funsies.
So yeah, I'm seeing the same way of thinking, acting and talking in the way many on the left react to the terror attack on Israel. Except more. Because antisemitism "antizionism".
And looking through the tags recently, I am frankly convinced a lot of Tumblr Leftists would cheer if Charlie Hebdo or the Bataclan happened tomorrow. All you people need is the right sticker on the murder to say it's good.
I've seen enough of you people say "France should cease to be" or "UK needs to disappear" or some other insane thing in the name of anticolonialism to know that, even if Israel packed up tomorrow and all Jews left the region, you'd still argue for their murder. Because you don't want to make things better, you want blood and to kill "righteously".
It was awful then, it is awful now, and the end result will be the same : worse consequences for the people you claim to defend with your braindead takes.

Maintaining the illusion of being a good person
Since 10/7 there has been a consistent thread that the UN is an arbiter of truth, or something, regarding the conflict because it was reprimanding Israel (and has consistently done so in the past). As such, I often heard from activists that because the UN said something it must be accepted as truth. Now with the publishing of the UN’s report of sexual violence on 10/7 and its findings, I am currently seeing various activists backtrack. Suddenly the UN is no longer trustworthy. Suddenly it’s a corrupt entity run by the Jews Zionists and the report needs to be dismissed as Jewish Zionist propaganda.
It’s almost like their endorsement and justification of violent resistance through any means necessary was a fantasy. Any means necessary doesn’t actually mean that. No “good” resistance fighter against a the colonial oppressor would actually commit atrocities against civilians, right? At least, not in their fantasy uprising.
But it happened, and it has been independently confirmed by one of the organizations they’ve routinely turned to. Now many of these have to deal with the cognitive dissonance that they’re actually not the “good” person they believed they were. Their past comments about believing all victims, supporting victims, that sexual assault is a horrific and people who commit it are monsters, etc… all of that is contradicted by this report.
It’s almost like they either didn’t understand what they were actually endorsing and justifying or they’re realizing that they’re hypocrites masquerading as good people for morality points.
