Sukuna's philosophy is finally being challenged in a significant way. Unlike the fights with yorozu, gojo and kashimo (who all agreed with him they just misinterpreted how he felt about it) the fight with yuuji is affecting him and his ideals which have been stagnant and static for the last one thousand years. And it's not a coincidence that he's also thinking about jogo and higuruma, the only two people he fought who were standing for something other than just being strong for strength sake. And in all of this yuuji is the ultimate opponent for sukuna because he never agreed with sukuna's ideal, he never recognized strength to be valuable in itself and he naver stood down. Sukuna needs to break yuuji to prove that he's right but yuuji is not easily broken

Last movie: The second spiderverse movie. It was too fast for me, but it seemed cool. Good vibes. I do enjoy animation and stylized cg over live action, so I am glad these movies are doing so well, but I think this is it for me on watching any more.

Currently watching: Just finished binge watching The Good Place. An extremely solid show. Well rounded, funny, great acting. Cathartic ending. Cried about it a lot thinking of the message it's trying to convey. Eleanor and Michael were my favorites, but that's no surprise that I like the Arizona trashbag and the fire squid demon in a Ted Dansen suit.

Currently reading: Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, by Pu Songling. And as always, Modao Zushi every time I have to check something for my donghua rewatch. And slowly catching up with The road to reunion by Onomatopoetikon (prequel movie xmen ff)

Currently working on: Still in the process of my Extensive Note Taking rewatch of the Founder of Diabolism (mdzs) donghua. I am mostly done with notes up to s2, but I binged s3 again because I wanted to write instead of take notes (WIP doc available on the CX Heaven discord). s3 continues to make me so angry I am not sure how I'll convince myself to do the full note taking. Comparing each episode to relevant novel sections is also emotionally taxing, in the sheer damage that the donghua does to the Twin Heroes relationship... so! This will be a while... but this an underlying project for my fem-mxy!wwx fic which ... may... take the place of "mainfic" for ever getting published? Jury is still out on that.

Current obsession: MDZS themed brainrot continues to make a marshy bog of my psyche. Chengxian, Twin Heroes, and Jiang Cheng in that order, but surprisingly I seem to be writing and thinking more about WWX in all my WIPs and I just noticed? Predominately, I have been writing these stories from his perspective 😅 Zoids au, naga!jc au, majority of fem!mxy au, jc wolfcurse post-canon, White Hair Wuxian smutty oneshot... Maybe it's just easier to write him because the novel is a baseline but also I think I understand and respect his multiverse shidivision.

15 Days of Deity Devotion : Ares

Day 6: Relations to other Gods

As I mentioned earlier during this challenge, Ares was a god who was often at odds with Athena and, as a result, was often disregarded by his father. At the same hand, he captured the heart of the fair Aphrodite, and sided with Apollo during the Trojan War. The events described during the Iliad and, to a lesser extent the Odyssey, have greatly influenced modern perceptions of the relationships Ares had with other deities. While I would love to talk about all of his relationships with the gods, I'll mainly focus on the events from the Iliad and a few other myths.

Relationship with Athena, Hera, and Zeus in the Iliad

During the course of the Iliad we see Ares turn his back on Athena and Hera and, in the process, earn the wrath of his parents. Athena and Ares meet several times in battle, and each time Athena emerges victorious. Now a lot of people use this as a way to show that Athena was the superior war god, however I've read scholarly opinions that point towards this being a tool to build Athena up as the protector of men during war and less a commentary on Ares and his power (which was that war is brutal and merciless).

"[Athena speaks :] ‘Violent Ares, that thing of fury, evil-wrought, that double-faced liar who even now protested to Hera and me, promising that he would fight against the Trojans and stand by the Argives. Now, all promises forgotten, he stands by the Trojans.’"

Later on, Athena meets Ares in battle and gravely wounds him, causing him to retreat to Olympos. While there he pleads with Zeus to control Athena, however Zeus was having none of it and gives one of, in my opinion, the best fatherly smack downs in history.

Then looking at him darkly Zeus who gathers the clouds spoke to him : ‘Do not sit beside me and whine, you double-faced liar. To me you are the most hateful of all the gods who hold Olympos. Forever quarrelling is dear to your heart, wars and battles. Truly the anger of Hera your mother is grown out of all hand nor gives ground; and try as I may I am broken by her arguments, and it is by her impulse, I think, you are suffering all this. And yet I will not long endure to see you in pain, since you are my child, and it was to me that your mother bore you. But were you born of some other god and proved so ruinous long since you would have been dropped beneath the gods of the bright sky.’

Relationship with Aphrodite in the Iliad

It was because of Aphrodite's request for help that Ares even became involved with the Trojans and thus earned the wrath of Athena. I really love these events because it goes to show the absolute power Aphrodite has over Ares - in broader terms: love triumphs over war. It is the only thing that can tame the rage, fury, and violence in our hearts and transform us. It's so poetic it almost makes me want to cry from the beauty of it.

By far, though, my favorite passage from the Iliad about the pair is when Aphrodite gets injured by Diomedes and seeks help from her lover, Ares.

The goddess departed in pain, hurt badly, and Iris wind-footed took her by the hand and led her away from the battle, her lovely skin blood-darkened, wounded and suffering. There to the left of the fighting she found Ares the violent [where Athena had left him], sitting, his spear leaned into the mist, and his swift horses. Dropping on one knee before her beloved brother in deep supplication she asked for his gold-bridled horses : ‘Beloved brother, rescue me and give me your horses so I may come to Olympos where is the place of the immortals. I am in too much pain from the wound of a mortal's spear-stroke, Tydeus' son, who would fight now even against Zeus the father.’

So she spoke, and Ares gave her the gold-bridled horses, and, still grieved in the inward heart, she mounted the chariot and beside her entering Iris gathered the reins up and whipped them into a run, and they winged their way unreluctant. Now as they came to sheer Olympos, the place of the immortals, there swift Iris the wind-footed reined in her horses and slipped them from the yoke and threw fodder immortal before them."

Relationship with Hera outside of the Iliad

Outside of the Iliad, Ares actually had some moments of loyalty to his mother that I really don't think should be left unmentioned! The first event was the binding of Hera by Hephaestus while he was trying to win Aphrodite's hand. During the events, Hera gets trapped in a chair designed by Hephaestus. Ares tried to rescue his mother, however the chains were too strong for even him to break. While unsuccessful, it highlights the loyalty and protection Ares demonstrates for his family.

The other myth with Hera occurs during Leto's pregnancy, when she is wandering ancient Greece with the celestial twins, Apollo and Artemis. While this paints Ares in a more negative light, it again shows the affection he had for his mother and his role, somewhat, as "enforcer" of the gods' wills.

"Hera murmured terrible against all child-bearing women that bare children to Zeus, but especially against Leto, for that she only was to bear to Zeus a son dearer even than Ares. Wherefore also she herself kept watch within the sky, angered in her heart greatly and beyond telling, and she prevented Leto who was holden in the pangs of child-birth. And she had two look-outs to keep watch upon the earth. The space of the continents did bold Ares watch, sitting armed on the high top of Thrakian Haimos, and his horses were stalled by the seven-chambered cave of Boreas. And the other kept watch over the far-flung islands, even Thaumantia [Iris] seated on Mimas, whither she had sped. There they sat and threatened all the cities which Leto approached and prevented them from receiving her . . .

Relationship with Hermes

Finally, one last relationship I'd like to highlight is that between Ares and Hermes. It's actually a fun little tidbit where Ares gets captured, stuffed in a bronze pot, and left to sit. I mostly love this for the imagery, and goes to show that even if most mythology painted Ares as the black sheep, so to speak, of the Olympians he was far from being reviled and hated by all. Honestly I think I have more questions about Ares than I did before I started learning about him!

"[Zeus speaks :] ‘Many of us who have our homes on Olympos endure things from men, when ourselves we inflict hard pain on each other. Ares had to endure it when strong Ephialtes and Otos, sons of Aloeus, chained him in bonds that were too strong for him, and three months and ten he lay chained in the brazen cauldron; had not Eeriboia, their stepmother, the surpassingly lovely, brought word to Hermes, who stole Ares away out of it, as he was growing faint and the hard bondage was breaking him.’"

I think ironically the best execution of the "doppelganger" idea was not in FF but the first Clown in the factory in SE - it was creepy, original, stylish and in a way meaningful. Sadly the later clowns just got more and more lame and felt just as generic bad guy filler villians (Think Justins clown and Medusas little Purple one were still kinda cool, guess video-gamey anime powerups are a guilty pleasure😂🤷🏿‍♂️)

…Oh, wow, that is a good point: we have Clown Maka right here as the similar-but-different-enough version of our main Maka. 

(I’m not going to use that L-word, given the disablism inherent to it.) 

Let me talk about the later clowns first, because what I have to say about Clown Maka and the Fire Force doppelgangers is going to take a lot of time. 

Ohkubo has shown before he can make even minor villains have eye-catching designs, compelling personalities, and a memorable presence and impact on the story. You point out that you like video game power-ups, similar to Justin’s clown and Medusa’s little one. Think about even the minor antagonists you fight in boss battles in the Soul Eater video game Monotone Princess, where Kill Bell and others still have eye-catching designs, compelling (if simple) personalities (“simple” as these are mini-bosses, not the main adversaries), and a memorable presence (because they need to be a memorable fight) and an impact on the story (because it builds up to facing off against Ponera and Grimoire later). 

The clowns, then, should have that kind of approach: eye-catching designs, compelling personalities, and a memorable presence and impact. But those clowns on the Moon in the final arc just didn’t. I work with my friend on revising these original tales for fanfics--and just now I had to check over notes and the Soul Eater Wiki to remember who Kaguya, White Rabbit, and Moonlight are. The three had memorable designs, but Kaguya was about the only one with any personality (and not a memorable or engaging one at that), and their presence was just to be antagonists. At least when My Hero Academia tried this boss battle approach in the Shie Hassaikai arc, you had characters who either helped define our protagonists (Rappa helped define Eijiro), helped define each other (Tengai defines Rappa, Chronostasis defines Overhaul), or defined antagonists (Mimic’s short temper defines how smart Toga and Twice are despite their initial goofiness). But what was gained in Soul Eater? What did we learn from seeing Kid, Stein, Marie, and others against the Moon Clowns? None of them seemed to gain new character dimensions. 

As for Clown Maka: I don’t think that arc quite did a good enough job at establishing why the Clown Maka is important. Granted, moments of making Maka feel self-doubt, while welcome, can feel tacked on or not as impactful as they could be: see how abrupt it is to have Maka jealous over Soul’s stalker and her own feelings that she is not worthy to wield his Death Scythe form. But the Clown Maka story was enough to introduce her own self-doubts, and it had enough “magic” to have it make sense (“the Madness just makes you feel bad and not in a sound mind,” that’s enough justification). So, yeah, it’s meaningful. 

The more I re-read the doppelgangers in Fire Force, they seem to exist as Ohkubo’s soapboxes against the audience. “Oh, people hate on how I write Tamaki--so I’ll have Doppel!Assault call her a whore and make it seem like any readers criticizing my writing are just prudes and SWERFs and the real bad guys.” “Oh, people think I under-wrote Benimaru and Kurono and didn’t plumb their depths of character complexity, or vastly misinterpret who those characters are--I’ll just make the Doppels of Benimaru and Kurono into exaggerated walking caricatures.” 

It ends up robbing any meaning from what we should get from other doppelgangers. As I say in another post, we needed Mari to be something more as a character so that the Evangelist’s flaws are emphasized. We abruptly wrap up Iris being a doppelganger to give Amaterasu a far-too-late redemption moment before we even really made Amaterasu much of a character when she was pretty much just a plot device or just an opposing force of nature. The doppelgangers of Burns and Konro are just here to show how much more powerful Burns and Konro are. Hibana’s doppelganger…existed, I don’t know why (or was that just Jonah in disguise?). Akitaru’s doppelganger disappears right after killing Akitaru, just here for a jump scare--which would be fine if we had just a hint of characterization to again show how that doppel is not who Akitaru is. 

The problem with the doppelgangers, as I talk about in the other post regarding Mari being the doppelganger of the Evangelist, is that the story could have taken a simpler approach--just make the doppelganger the opposite of the character, to characterize the character by negatives, by showing us all that they are not--and instead took a more complex approach that, while ambitious, did not work. The more ambitious, complex approach was that the doppelgangers are who the world imagines that person to be…but that didn’t work, for two reasons. 

The first reason is lore: we were told someone gains pyrokinetic abilities without becoming an Infernal if that person and their doppelganger merge and if that person and their doppelganger are exactly the same--that who they really are, and how the world sees them, are perfectly the same. By that argument, Shinra, Arthur, Tamaki, Maki, Takehisa, Hibana, Benimaru, Kurono, and so on are exactly the same as who they are and how the world sees them…but that’s not true. No person is exactly how the world sees them. That’s not even getting into how you are not the same person in all contexts and settings, around all the same people, around your family as you would be around your friends. Shinra is seen as a killer; he is not. Tamaki is seen as a flirt, a whore, someone trying to get into people’s pants and expose herself in public: she is none of those things, she’s not even interested in dating, the entire point of her final arc is her refusal to embrace that “symbol of life / symbol of fanservice” shit. And on and on. I know this gets swept under the rug later as “well, the physics of the world are changing so much, so that rule about doppelgangers and gaining pyrokinetic abilities no longer matters, hence how Benimaru can still have his doppel show up even though he should already be merged with his own in order to have pyrokinetic abilities,” but that rule change doesn’t negate what I just pointed out about Shinra and Tamaki and so on. 

The second reason is thematics: what is learned about this? At least if a doppel is your opposite, you are characterizing your character by contrasting them with the person they are not. But when you take the approach Fire Force does, where a doppel is how the world sees you, what is gained? This was a missed opportunity. Maki could have faced a doppel to really emphasize that, while people see her a cute daddy’s girl and someone in love with love and someone they would like to date, they are ignoring that, even if she is daddy’s girl and in love with love, she is also a passionate fighter who will protect her friends and is willing to beat the shit out of someone. Hibana put up a front that she hates the past, hates the world, hates her sister, just wants to make money and advance science--but that is not all she is, and we don’t see her fight a doppel who is a caricature of all of those traits, or, better yet, confront a doppel who actually is more like her real self, who is someone who is traumatized, who wants to enjoy the beauty of nature and the world, who loves Iris, who would love to get back to her faith and her family but instead fills that void with work and inhuman experiments. It feels like a failure of the theme.

I don't have the link to it seeing as I haven't read it myself but I thought I'd mention it in case you might want to check it out. I'm sure @iris-in-the-rain can provide the link.

Portal. What is a crossover you’ve done/thought about for this character?

Does her future KH crossover count? As I've continued reading twst (began the first 11 parts of Book 6 last night), I've begun getting more ideas about how I want to go about writing Yuulan's Twst/KH crossover. I will have more details when KH OC Week starts next week.

Other crossovers I've considered for Yuulan specifically include a FF XIV crossover with Taima, Kalai and Epel joining her, a Jane Austen/Persuasion AU, and one based on the Maleficient movies mixed with KH. Yeah...that third one is very much just a bunch of plot bunnies in my head. 😅

Before coming to Twisted Wonderland, Yuulan was just beginning to learn now to perform formchanges on her keyblade. She was able to manifest a sword and was pretty good at wielding it. Though she currently can't use her keyblade, she still has memories of her swordmanship. It's something she and Silver eventually bond over post Book 5.

Portal. What is a crossover you’ve done/thought about for this character?

Too many to count! But one crossover idea with Kalai that I consistently think about is a LoveLive! crossover with Iris and Adelen. Though I'll probably never write it out, there are some elements of this crossover in Taima's story in my twst-verse.

One headcanon I have for Kalai in my twst-verse is that she's a former spy/asassin for the Kingscholar family but she's since seized that work since getting married and having children. While her work with the royal guard is still rigorous, it's far less dangerous for her or her family.

What’s your own favorite story of the year?: I HAVE A FEW FAVES. The Ending Is The Beginning (Neil/The Protagonist, Tenet 2020, Explicit)... Thrills and Chills (Barry Allen/Leonard Snart/Iris West, The Flash (TV 2014), Explicit)... Sorry, I Like You (Azula/Ty Lee, A:TLA, Teen)... mostly because I love how the writing turned out. I couldn’t be happier.

Did you take any writing risks this year?: A ton of,,,, failed AO3 fests.

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the new year?: In all seriousness, I wanna finish up my chapter stories. I’m sorry it’s taking so long.

Most popular story of the year?: In My Head With You (Venom/Eddie Brock - Venom 2018-2021 Movies, Explicit) I believe has the higher view count of 9757. I hammered it out in time for Venom 2 just dropping into theaters.

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: omg if anyone is interested please read Night-Fall (Todd Anderson/Neil Parry, Dead Poets Society, Mature) because I haven’t gotten to interact with more of the fandom and I feel like this fic got skipped over and Devil Caught Your Eye (Wanda Maximoff/Sylvie, MCU, Teen) because they’re two of my favorite characters in the MCU next to Yelena and I think I did a fantastic scenario of them meeting up!

Most fun story to write: I had way too much fun doing the “Alina pegs the Darkling” fic which is Surprise Me (The Darkling | Aleksander Morozova/Alina Starkov, Shadow and Bone (TV), Explicit) like I’m sorry,,,, I’m not,,,, but it had to be done. He NEEDED to get railed!!

Most unintentionally telling story: I don’t know what “unintentionally telling” is supposed to mean in this context,,,, so imma just recommend Blackthorn (Kim Possible/Shego, Kim Possible, No Rating) because it’s telling you it’s gay. It’s very gay. Please enjoy.

Biggest disappointment: I guess myself and the lack of time-management and commitment I would usually practice. 

Biggest surprise: HOW ABOUT GETTING 1200+ KUDOS AND 9500+ VIEWS ON MY PETER-3/PETER-2(/PETER-1) FIC FOR SPIDERMAN NWH???? HOLY SHIT?? yall were so ready to go feral and ship any level of Spideycest if it had some kind of canon basis (I mean I was too but that’s besides the point!!!)
