what do you think of the argument that it’s not fair on poor people with mental health problems who work really hard to keep their housing for someone who doesn’t work hard to get housing?

This is not my view at all btw but someone said it and idk how to respond

It is helpful to reframe the situation like this: “Do you believe that people who do not work deserve to be alive?” If the answer to this question is yes, then we need to provide those people with housing, food and basic amenities. If the answer is no, they then need to justify why they think that a person who doesn’t work deserves to starve or die from exposure.

Keep in mind that welfare spending makes up only a third of your average taxpayers contribution, at least here in the UK, and we are taxed more than most. That includes all welfare, including disability benefits, child benefits, free school meals, subsidised healthcare and housing. That is a pretty good deal to ensure that our fellow human beings are not living on the streets in massive numbers.

The other key point to consider, is that any system which requires people to work for their survival hands the power of life and death to employers. Do you want corporations to be able to decide who lives and who dies? Do you believe that conditions and workers rights would improve or deteriorate under a system where workers cannot quit if they can’t find another job, because if they do, they won’t be able to afford to stay alive?

If we want to address inequality, how about the billions in corporate subsidies paid for by our taxes? The intentional loopholes meaning the very rich pay less tax than the poor do? The fact that the welfare system is forced to subsidise the inadequate wages paid by some of the world’s most profitable companies? That corporations use far more of the infrastructure, the roads, the rails, the ports that they pay almost nothing to maintain? Let’s address all that first before we worry about poor people getting a few hundred quid a month in housing benefits, if they’re lucky.

I honestly think that welfare claimants, even fraudulent ones, are a non-issue. It is pocket change compared to the billions we piss up the wall on our institutionally racist police force, bailing out irresponsible banks, supporting genocidal regimes, maintaining our imperial fleet and subsidising corporate interests. Welfare spending would be a wholly insignificant sum if we actually taxed the rich properly to fund the infrastructure and the welfare system that they build their fortunes on.

A robust welfare system is the defining mark of a fair society. What is even the point of humans coming together as communities if not for the collective to guarantee the welfare of the individual through shared security and the equitable distribution of resources? Society exists so that we can look after one another, and that shouldn’t be dependent on people selling most of their waking life just to avoid homelessness.

The job of a SOC Analyst

The #1 thing people ask me about is what I do for a job.

I'm a tier 1 SOC Analyst and I'm currently training to do some Cyber Threat Intelligence.

I will explain in detail what I do on a daily basis and why I've decided to do this job... And the negatives.

First of all, what's a SOC. SOC stands for "security operations center". It's a place (in my case virtual as I'm full remote) where a group of people, divided by experience and area of expertise, do the following:

Monitor the activities going on the customer's network or endpoints(= every device connected to the network);

Assess and mitigate alerts coming from the network and/or the endpoint of the client -> These tools send alerts that need to be evaluated and mitigated/responded in a certain amount of time (it depends on the SOC and the type of alert, generally I can assume an amount of time from 15 to 30 minutes per alert. Which is not that much;

Investigate cybersecurity incidents -> the SOC also analyses the kind of "incident" that happens in deep detail by analysing malware, spam emails, the behaviour of users and so on;

If the SOC is big/mature enough there could be some sort of prevention of cybersecurity issues, generally we talk about threat hunting (here for more information on that) and cyber threat intelligence (gathering information from various sources to produce a report about the potential attackers considering also the characteristic of the customer's company such as the size, the geographical area of operations, media exposure, geopolitical issues and what they do - doing this for a bank is different than doing it for a industry)

There are also other functions (such as we have a Security Architect that prepares a personalised solution for each client).

I know what you're thinking. But the AI...

No, they cannot do my job, as the ability of a human to notice patterns and correlate the information among various sources is unique. I memorised, with time, the usual activities my customers do, therefore I can interpret the user actions even with limited sources. And this is just one example.

Soc analysts are roughly divided in three "categories", always keep in mind that every SOC is different and has its own internal rules, that are not to be divulged. This is the rough division I've learned studying cybersecurity and NOT my organisation division.

Tier 1 Analysts are the one that monitors the traffic and activities I've mentioned before. They triage the alerts and if something deserves more investigation or can be discarded. They often perform simple actions of remediation of incidents.

Tier 2 Analysts are the ones that go deeper - they collect malware samples from the incident and analyse it, investigate and remediate more complex security incidents.

Tier 3 Analysts perform more active prevention duties like threat hunting and vulnerability assessments.

Some sources put intelligence activity on the tier 3, others consider it a different activity from the scenario I've described. If a SOC is big enough they might have their own intelligence team separated from the "regular" soc analysts. The rigidity of these roles can vary, as you probably got from my own duties.

On the top we have a SOC manager to coordinate the activities I've described and security architects that design the solution (although the deployment of these solutions can be delegated to the analysts, since we also have to monitor how well these perform).

All these people are usually referred as "blue teamers" btw, which are the ones that perform defensive actions.

A company can have a red team (basically they attack the customer to gain information that the blue team will use to improve their activities). I actually wanted to be a red teamer at first, since it's considered the "cooler" job.

Ok, got it. Now explain to me how you got there since I've never heard anything about this before.

I have a friend that's a system engineer and recommended this job to me.

I studies physics at university but I failed (in my country physics include some computer science classes btw) and I had some related experience I won't share for privacy reasons. No I'm not a criminal lol.

I then started studying - did a bootcamp and got a couple of certifications. Then I got my job.

However. Generally you get a degree in computer science or software engineering, and some universities offer cybersecurity degrees. Unfortunately I cannot tell you what to pick as every university has its own program and I cannot help you with that.

Certifications are a big part of my job unfortunately - mostly because due to how fast it goes you absolutely need to be "on top". It's annoying, yes, I hate it.

However. Consider that once you're hired you definitely will get them paid by your employer - at least in Europe this is on them(idk about the US), but you need some knowledge of cybersecurity to start.

Since some of them are stupid expensive I 100% recommend the compTIA ones. They're basics and respected worldwide. A+, Network+ and Security+ are basics, vendor neutral (which doesn't tie you to a particular "source", as every company works differently), and is relatively cheap (~300€).

Remember that I had previous experience so no one cares that I don't have a degree - I do however and I hope that in the future I will be able to "fix" this.

Great. How do I know if I'm good for this job?

This is on you. However:

One important thing if you don't live in an English speaking country is a good attitude towards foreign languages. I speak 5 for example, but it's an hobby I do since I was a teen;

Can you manage stress? A SOC is a fast paced environment, and you have a limited time to deal with whatever gets thrown at you. You have 15 to 30 minutes to deal with an alert and make a decision. Can you do that without panicking, crying or throwing a tantrum?

Are you a fast learner? You need to learn quickly how to do things, since the tools we use are quite complicated.

Are you willing to work on shifts, Saturdays, Sundays, festivities included? A lot of people can't cope with this and it's fine because it's a massacre. The job is so stressful to the point a lot of people leave cybersecurity because of it. Do not underestimate it, please.

How good are you at remembering random information and making correlations? Because I can remember random bits of information that no one ever thinks of it and it's one of my greatest strengths.

You need to do teamwork and be good with people, customers and so on - you have to explain complicated things you probably read in another language to people that don't know anything about what you do. It's more difficult than most people think.

Procedures are everything here - and for good reasons.

I think this is it.

Money.

USA avg salary: 74 307$ (Glassdoor)

France avg salary: 42 000€ (Glassdoor)

UK avg salary: 28 809 £ (Glassdoor)

There are random numbers I've found online(and with a lot of discrepancies). Consider that you MUST negotiate your salary, and that in certain places you get paid more if you work out of the usual 8-19 work shift. Obv since I live in a different place I cannot tell you if it's worth it - you do your own calculations.

But that's beyond the purpose of this post.

Tumblr would make hella bank if they implemented a fully customizable algorithm.

Technically, an algorithm isn't the worst thing to have a seperate tab on your dash for. The problem is when you have no control of how that algorithm works. If tumblr really wanted to sell itself on being able to curate your experience, they should fuse the followed tags with an updated search system that has the algorithm factors right there on the For You page. You add and delete values yourself and write your own algorithm over time instead of having some background function do it for you. They could draw insane crowds on just giving people that level of control and being able to switch tabs between that and the normal chronological feed as you want. Put all the funding on improving the search. Give us full control in a seperate tab. Let us do the rest. Presto.

As requested by anon, turning my response into a post that does not enhance exposure for the OP. My original thoughts from my reblog are below (with the second paragraph edited to clarify I was not referring to OP when I said someone I thought highly of), and I will be deleting the reblog.

This broke me.

I don’t know it it’s the dehumanization, or the trading in antisemitic tropes, or seeing it be reblogged from someone I thought so highly of.

But I read this and broke down and sobbed for almost an hour.

More than 1,000 Israelis dead, and it doesn’t matter because they’re “colonizers”? (How do you colonize your homeland? How do you colonize when you have no mother country? How do you think SWANA became Arab? What happened to all the indigenous communities that existed before Arab conquest? But it’s simple, right? It’s not complicated? Jews were exiled and ended up in Europe and somehow that makes us Europeans, even though one country after the next murdered us and exiled us again, told us to return to Palestine when we couldn’t, because the occupying powers prohibited it or made life so difficult that the Jews who were brave enough to stay had to rely on support from the diaspora to survive. Never mind the majority of Israelis who came from surrounding countries in the “Middle East,” where they lived for hundreds of years after being forced out of Israel/Palestine. Talk to me about the demographics of Israel. His many are Ashkenazi? Mizrahim? Sephardi? How many were ethnically cleansed from surrounding Arab countries? How many were Holocaust survivors left to die in DP camps until Israel was established, because countries still wouldn’t let Jews in after the war ended and they saw what was done to us because we were never European? Tell me the history of this land. Tell me how Jews went to being the majority population to such a small minority. Tell me when there was last sovereign rule in the land before 1948. Tell me why for 2000 years we’ve said next year in Jerusalem. Was it some conspiracy to justify the taking of the land from Palestinians, somehow devised before Palestinians even existed?

Tell me about the Hebron pogrom. Tell me about the ethnic cleansing of Jews from Jerusalem. Talk to me about the war of 1948. How many countries attacked? Which came to the aid of Israel? After its conclusion, when Jordan annexed and Egypt occupied the West Bank and Gaza, respectively, why was a Palestinian state never established? Explain to me why Palestinian refugees are the only ones that the UN cannot resettle, why surrounding countries refuse to grant Palestinian refugees citizenship, instead forcing them to live in refugee camps.

Talk to me about Hamas. Where do they store their weapons? What did they say in their charter? What have they done to improve life for Palestinians? Why do they shoot rockets from densely populated areas when other areas exist?

Because it’s simple, right? It’s not complicated?)

This take is vile and devoid of humanity. My heart has broken today. I know you don’t care. But know that this rhetoric will not help Palestinians. Know that it will only make it harder for the people on the ground fighting for Palestinian liberation (yes, including in Israel, including Israelis, many of whom were viciously murdered by Hamas) to achieve that goal.

As I’ve said before and will continue to say, none of what I say above justifies denying Palestinians’ claim to self determination. None of it detracts from the fact that the siege against Gaza is a war crime, and if by some miracle Gazans are able to evacuate but they’re not allowed to return to their homes, that would be an ethic cleansing, and nothing Hamas did can justify that. It does not detract from what the Israeli government has done, now and historically, to Palestinians. But you cannot say one ethnic cleansing is abhorrent while another is fine, simply because of the ethnicity or nationality of those being cleansed. And to lie about Jewish connection to Israel, when history and dna and archaeology all make clear this is where ethnic Jews are from, to justify that ethnic cleansing is horrifying.

Homelessness in Gotham, Gone?

Earlier today Jason Todd-Wayne gave a speech about the future of the Martha Wayne Foundation and the proactive stance they plan to take on the rise in homelessness in Gotham and how their plan to address it in a city-wide campaign about the 8 key issues facing the houseless community in Gotham. They project that they can drastically decrease the number from Over 5,000 people in the next three years with this plan. 

“The issues facing the low-income and homeless community are complex and multifaceted. Some of the most significant issues include:

Lack of affordable housing: One of the main causes of homelessness is the lack of affordable housing. This can be due to high housing costs, low wages, and a shortage of available rental units.

Poverty: Homelessness is often a symptom of poverty. People living in poverty may not be able to afford housing, food, and other basic necessities.

Mental health and substance abuse: Many homeless individuals struggle with mental health issues and substance abuse. These issues can make it difficult for them to maintain stable housing and employment. We are equipping all employees at Wayne Enterprises with Harm Reduction and Suicide prevention training, additionally, we will expand this training through the community centers currently under construction. 

Physical health problems: Homelessness can lead to poor physical health due to lack of access to healthcare, poor living conditions, fear and Joker toxin inhalation, and exposure to the elements. By opening three more clinics that offer a “pay what you can” model those who are in need of healthcare are not limited by the lack of insurance and are instead supported in this critical need. 

Lack of support systems: Many homeless individuals may not have access to family or community support systems, making it harder for them to find and maintain stable housing. We plan to address this with the opening of community centers that offer job training, free counseling, and places to gather without the threat of the elements. 

Lack of access to education, job opportunities, and social services: Homelessness can make it difficult to access education, job opportunities, and social services, which can make it harder for homeless individuals to improve their situations. Each of the community centers that we are funding will have food banks as a part of the services that they offer, this can help families eliminate the decision between paying the rent or starving, in addition to providing food security to those without homes. 

Criminalization of homelessness:  Gotham criminalizes activities such as sleeping or camping in public spaces, panhandling, and loitering, which can make it harder for homeless people to survive. We want to address the legislature around this issue to decriminalize the struggle to survive and provide criminal record erasure as part of this new legislature for non-violent offenders. This is not only penalizing someone in their struggle but also prevents them from access to safe housing and many jobs because of the criminal record this creates.

Villain attacks: Villains such as Scarecrow, Joker, and the Penguin cause homelessness with the destruction of property and further plague them with chemical attacks that they are now more vulnerable to due to exposure to the elements. We will have mobile response units equipped with first aid, the latest anti-toxin, and water available within every five-block radius of an attack. Additionally, we will be providing self-defense training in our community centers to prevent more people from becoming the next victim statistic. 

It's important to remember that homelessness is a complex issue and requires a multi-faceted approach to address it effectively. But above all, each person suffering from homelessness is worthy of dignity and respect. It is the promise of the Martha Wayne Foundation to treat every individual who walks through their doors with human decency, a hot meal if they need it, and a listening ear. Alone we are unable to meet the needs of the community, but together, hand in hand we can see a better future for a better Gotham.”

Educating oneself about the issues facing the homeless community’s issues and sharing that knowledge with others to raise awareness and inspire action.

Getting trained in Harm Reduction, First Aid, and Suicide Prevention through the Martha Wayne Foundation. 

If we all take one small step in the right direction in helping the basic needs of our community to be met, maybe one day there will be no more need for vigilantes, but instead, a force of everyday Gothamites equipped to address the needs of their Neighbors, Friends, Family, and Coworkers in ways that prevent more lives lost. 

I am left wondering if this boy from Gotham’s Streets will rise to the challenge or go like those who have tried and failed before, burnt out in the days, weeks, and years to come.

The Scottish Solicitor and inventor Mungo Ponton was born on November 20th 1801. 

Not heard of him? I have posted about him before, he was the only son of John Ponton, a farmer at Balgreen now part of Edinburgh not far from Murrayfield. 

After leaving school he was apprenticed to the solicitor James Balfour. He was later apprenticed to William Scott and G L Finlay. He himself was admitted to the Society of Writers to the Signet in 1825.

By 1829, Ponton was in partnership with Archibald W Goldie WS, in the firm of Goldie & Ponton.   In January 1838 Mungo Ponton became solicitor to National Bank of Scotland.

But it wasn’t for his work as a lawyer that makes Mungo worthy of a mention in my daily posts. 

By the mid-1840s he was in poor health. He was granted an extended leave of absence in summer 1845, but by winter he was still very unwell. The board granted him another leave of absence in June 1846 so that he could travel to Germany to take the waters. His health did not improve, and in September he wrote to the board from Coblenz, tendering his resignation from the bank.

Mungo Ponton became a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1834. In 1838 he was awarded a silver medal from the Society of Arts for Scotland, for his role in the development of the electrical telegraph. He is best-remembered today, however, for his contributions to photography.

In 1839 he announced his discovery of the light-sensitive qualities of sodium dichromate. These findings were vitally important to the development of photography, paving the way for nearly all the photomechanical processes that later came into standard use.

He continued to experiment with photographic chemistry. In 1845 he was awarded another silver medal from the Society of Arts for Scotland, this time for his development of a process for measuring hourly variations in the temperature of photographic paper. In the same year he also introduced a variation of the calotype process that worked with shorter exposure times.

Ponton never returned to good health after his illness in the mid-1840s. He moved to Bristol, where the climate was milder and thought to be more favourable to health. He gave up his legal and banking career, but maintained his interest in science, publishing numerous further papers on scientific and religious matters.

Mungo Ponton died at home at Clifton on 3rd August 1880. One source says he was buried in Edinburgh, another says  Arnos Vale Cemetery, Bristol, I’m not sure which to believe, however two of Ponton’s wives, are buried at Saint John Episcopal Graveyard at the West End of Princes, the second was in 1910, which makes me suspect he might have bought a plot there and may be there also.
