padmé’s tatooine peasant disguise!
Tumblr media
here are all the other ones i have done:
summer meadow outfit
wedding outfit
my favorite padmé outfits
padmé’s funeral outfit
parade outfit
geonosis outfit
battle outfit
Tumblr media
this outfit is a classic and so iconic. if is so different from any other of padmé’s costumes, which makes it stand out. even as a handmaiden, padmé matches the outfit of the queen, but this one doesn’t match anything. instead, it is reflective of tatooine dress, such as what anakin and others wear. it appears not to fit her, and seems to be scavenged from scraps on the ship.
Tumblr media
the concept art by iain mccaig has more nods to naboo fashion, such as the diadem and the gold. although it is a beautiful design, the final product allowed for more of a disguise. the outfit is also the simplest out we ever see padmé in: no face of makeup, no overly complex hairstyle, no matching handmaidens.
Tumblr media
the fabric of the majority of this outfit is homespun, which means it is a woven fabric with small irregularities and a looser weave. in fact, this is the only time in phantom menace that we see padmé in cooler tones.
Tumblr media
the blue undershirt has a jeweled neckline and is made from a crinkled homespun fabric. if you look at her sleeves, you see a grey/tan strip of cloth wrapped around the lower forearm. this wrist binding is supposed to keep out sand and dust.
with the baggy vest and shirt, padmé’s layering is very reminiscent of early 90s and late 80s fashion trends. her belt is also high waisted, reminding me of the high waisted jeans popular at the same time.
Tumblr media
over her shirt, padmé wears a heather (dark grey) vest. again, it is very baggy and doesn’t fit her right. but, it seems to be made from a thick, textured, homespun fabric and a scoop neckline.
in the late 90s and early 2000s, vests became popular and fashionable to wear. although some vests are tight (in movies such as clueless), there was also a trend of baggy vests, a trend that is coming back in the early 2020s.
Tumblr media
padmé’s pants in this outfit are a dark grey/black made from a homespun matte fabric. they are very loose fitting, but the lower legs are wrapped in strips of the same matte fabric. all of the wrappings, both on the shirt and the pants, are part of the tatooine culture to keep dust out.
these pants are somewhat similar to harem pants, which were popular in the 80s. they were made popular by celebrities such as M.C. Hammer.
Tumblr media
padmé’s hair in this outfit is one of the simpler hairdos in the prequels. it is reminiscent of the medieval era hair. the crown braid started in ancient rome, but it was very popular in medieval and byzantine times. growing hair long was a sign of status, but wearing hair down was forbidden. the crown braid was a solution.
i also have to mention that padmé’s hair in the outfit is very similar to leia’s hair in the ceremony at the end of a new hope. like mother like daughter.
Tumblr media
finally, i want to mention how this is the outfit where anakin and padmé met. she wasn’t dressed as a queen, or exquisitely, or with anything more than scraps, yet anakin saw her as a angel. a heavenly figure, simply because she was beautiful, not because she was a queen. i just think it’s really the how anakin fell in love with padmé as a peasant and not as a queen.

Brimstone
Tumblr media
As Alan, Ron and I approached the door
Two Brimstone butterflies were brightly dancing.
So out of place. I thought was this a chance thing?
A common sight in meadow or on moor
But here in Basingstoke, at All Saints church?
A sight that made my tired and sad heart lurch
I tried to shed the possibility.
All that occurs has reason if you press
But superstition wants for something less.
I’d pitched my camp on rationality
Yet here’s my heart insisting it’s a sign,
These flitting yellow messengers divine
We’re taught to think of brimstone as God’s wrath,
His anger at the sin of unbelief,
But these two circling angels stemmed my grief
As they paid courtship on the old stone path
And, lifting off the sadness of the day,
They pricked my pompous gloom, blew it away.
Oh, Graham, you and I had walked so far
We’d strode the hills and glens, the moors and sands
I’d found redemption in your gentle hands
Then watched you dwindle like a dying star
I came today to say a last goodbye
And met instead the Brimstone butterfly.
Now in my mind you’re here again, not lost
On this March morning dancing in the sun
Insisting life’s not over, it’s begun
Just open up your heart and let it trust
I feel it now and hopefulness returns
My heart was stone but now a stone that burns.
RIP Graham Osborne, a Good Man.

Tumblr media
Height: 5’8”
Weight: 134
Body Build: Lean/Toned
Backstory/Background:
Raven is born one half of a pair of twins to his mother, an author, and his father, a businessman based in Japan. Because of his fathers work at this time their father was hardly around so Raven’s mother would often raise the children alone. That was while they were living in Canada. As a child Raven would often wander around the area around his family’s home. This would lead to him eventually wandering far too closely to a pond near the family home and falling in, almost drowning. Following this incident and surviving Raven would soon after become quite sick and take some time to recover from this all together. He would suffer hearing loss because of this happening, making things more difficult for him overall.
Raven and his twin sister would soon start to go to a boarding school as toddlers for a while. Though this doesn’t last very long before their father decides to officially move the family out to Japan as he has found greater success in business there. Some time after arriving the twins would be sent to an academy and be taught to speak Japanese. This would help along with attending a school with both foreign and native students. Over his time there Raven would start to get into more and more geeky interests, especially in manga and video games. Though he would not have too many friends at this time.
Growing into his teenage years nothing all too exciting happens initially as Raven and the rest of his family lead a relatively calm and normal life at this time in their lives. That was until the night a fire broke out mysteriously and destroyed the house and killed both his parents and sister, and ended up maiming and burning the teenager who barely managed to survive the incident. Because of this event Raven, while still in ICU at the hospital is approached by a Reaper, who is able to contact Raven as Raven has brushed so close to death that his ‘sight’ has changed. Allowing him to see spirits and other such beings.
Raven accepts the offer and goes to make a near full recovery, with lingering asthma as the most significant thing to happen because of the fire. Orphaned now and with nowhere really to go Raven, now a recruitment for Reapers is invited to a Reaper school where he can finish out his normal schooling and take the Reaper courses with others who have been in a similar situation and given similar offers as he has been given. Raven graduates from the school with exceptional grades.
As an adult Raven manages an average life still, when he is not Reaping. Raven takes on a job at a local Japanese Model Magazine that is one of the most, if not the most popular in the country. He becomes an article writer for it. As well he has also inherited his parents own wealth and partial ownership of the rights to his fathers company, and his mothers revenue for her stories. Though Raven refused to actually use the money from them as he desires mainly to use his own money to get himself ahead. As well as enjoys the simple work of writing articles for a magazine. As well, Raven has sold a few books and manga of his own, which has gotten him quite a bit of his own notoriety and fame with the people of Japan.
Almost making him as popular as some of the models that work with the magazine. He is also friends with many of the models and often pressured by fans and his friends alike to take part in more photos, not exactly as a model. Though Raven has got issues with that as he has kept most of his scars from the fire hidden and thinks that the scar over his eye would ruin any photo op.

On May 21st 1650, James Graham, Earl of Montrose, was executed in Edinburgh.
James Graham is one of the guys who pops up most in my posts throughout the year thanks to him winning  a series of battles in 1644-45, against much larger forces, these were
Battle of Tippermuir; 1st September 1644. Battle of Aberdeen, (Justice Mills); 13th September 1644. Battle of Inverlochy; 2nd of February 1645. Battle of Auldearn; 9th of May 1645. Battle of Alford; 2nd of July 1645. Battle of Kilsyth; 15th of August 1645.
As well as the skirmishes at Fyvie Castle and retreat from Dundee. It wasn't all wins though and Montrose was of course savagely defeated at Philiphaugh on 13th September 1645, it was less a battle more a massacre more after the battle than during it. Indeed these were times of horrors but not once did Montrose retaliate against his Covenant prisoners. The same could not be said of the Covenanters, but they used the excuse of doing God's work, James Graham, who started as a Covenanter took up the cause of the Charles I and the Stewart monarchy.
After Philiphaugh a year of guerrilla warfare ensued, which was relatively ineffective but it kept his army in action which was vital to Montrose. This year was to end in September 1646 when Charles, himself a prisoner by then, ordered Montrose to lay down his arms and disband his army. This he did, reluctantly at Blairgowrie in Perthshire, and he left the country on the 3rd of September in disguise just as he had entered it just 2 years earlier. James Graham, the 1st Marquis of Montrose was 34 years of age.
James Graham remained in exile for 3 years until March 1650. By this time King Charles had been executed, and Montrose pledged his allegiance to the new King Charles II.
What Montrose didn't know was that Charles II was playing both sides against each other by both, negotiating with the Covenanters  at Breda at this time but at the same time he was encouraging Montrose to undertake a new campaign, he was in fact sending Montrose to his death and he knew it.
There are letters extant bought over by the king's messenger Sir William Fleming which dictate that if Montrose has been successful he, was to deliver a message condemning the Covenanter leader, Argyll and his minions, if however Montrose had been defeated he was to pass a letter to the Parliament disowning Montrose completely and avowing that he, the King knew nothing of Montrose's designs. Such were the times.
We last heard of him after he was defeated at the battle of Carbisdale on April the 27th 1650.   It was the start of one of the most tragic passages of Scottish history. Having stumbled upon Ardvreck Castle 2 days after the battle then owned by Neil Mcleod of Assynt, and assuming he was relatively safe where he was, he rested. When he awoke he was taken up stairs and immediately arrested by Major General Holbourn. All Montrose said when taken away was "Sir, I do as you bid", and he knew what fate awaited him. Throughout this he acted with dignity and bravery the likes of Scotland had not seen since the likes of Wallace and Bruce.
In the Highlands, the name of Neil MacLeod is thus forever associated with treachery. The bard Iain Lom would write:
You are a stripped branch of the perfumed apple tree without  fruit or honour or comeliness, ever engaged in murdering one another you are the leavings of  sword thrusts and dirks. The death should be about you, despicable one, for you have sinfully sold the truth for Leith meal, most of which had gone sour.
After being paraded through the towns of Scotland on the journey south Montrose was arrived at the in Edinburgh where he was met by the City Magistrates. Mounted on a cart, with his hands tied so as to be unable to protect himself, the people were urged to pelt him with stones and rubbish. Thankfully this did not happen and so sweet was his carriage that even the women who had been paid to stone and abuse him were moved to tears upon observing his unfortunate predicament.
The next day these same women were roundly rebuked from the pulpits for not taking the opportunity to revile and abuse him. As the cart made its way up the Royal Mile it was
stopped adjacent to Argyll’s lodging of Moray House where the wedding of Lord Lorne and Lady Jean Gordon was in progress. As the party stood on the balcony and made ready to mock him, Montrose sensed what was afoot and defiantly turned his face towards them. Argyll stood at the back of the group shielded by a curtain, when it was wryly observed that even then he was unable to stand and look Montrose directly in the eye. Lady Gordon was heard to laugh aloud at Montrose whereupon an English gentleman in the crowd shouted to her that it should be she who should be in the cart for her adulteries.
In one version of this story I have read that someone from the balcony urinated on The Marquess as the cart sat there, I’m not sure if this is true though. As he had already been proclaimed a traitor James Graham did not get a trial, he was even denied, what was seen as an honourable death by beheading, he was hung, like a common criminal at the Tolbooth n the Royal Mile, he went to his death defiantly, maintaining his adherence to the Covenant. He also went stylishly, dressed in a black suit, a scarlet coat with silver trimmings, and a beaver hat.the last words of this loyal and highly principled man were:
“God have mercy on this afflicted land”,
His beloved Scotland.
It wasn’t good enough to merely kill him though, his head was placed on a spike on the Royal Mile, his limbs distributed to other Scottish burghs, and his torso buried near the Burghmuir loch, now The Meadows, this was a warning to others perceived as traitors.
For royalists, Montrose became a symbol of loyalty and a martyr for their cause. After the Restoration of Charles II in 1660, they took revenge on their enemies in various ways, including the trial and execution of the Marquis of Argyll in May 1661. Meanwhile, a grisly piece of theatre was carefully stage-managed to emphasise the king’s power and authority, and the undoing of the covenanting regime’s acts.
In January 1661, six ‘grave makers’ were paid £18 Scots for ‘raising’ the corpse. There were actually two bodies, for the remains of Sir William Hay of Dalgety, executed along with Montrose, were retrieved at the same time. A Robert Johnstone was paid £3 for showing the burial place, where the exhumation took place by torchlight. Surgeons washed the bones, wrapped them in cloth, and placed them in coffins. The coffins were covered with ‘two best velvet mortcloths’, for which John Kniblo, a local merchant, was paid £24, including ‘drink money’, a customary additional payment for work.
Montrose’s heart was missing, having been removed by sympathisers in 1650, embalmed and kept safe. (Much later, the heart went missing and was lost.) The accounts also show that 100 planks (‘daills’) were made into scaffolding and a stage ‘for the trumpeters for the down taking of my lord Marques head’ from the spike on the Tolbooth.
After the coffin containing Montrose’s remains lay in state at Holyrood Abbey for eight weeks, a magnificent funeral took place on 11 May 1661. His remains were buried in St Giles. They were disturbed by later alterations, but after Queen Victoria expressed astonishment in 1886 on seeing a simple slab inscribed ‘Montrose 1661’, the place was marked more formally.
If you ever visit The High Kirk of Edinburgh, commonly known as St Giles, more often than not you will see a floral tribute on his tomb, such is the regard he is still held in.

Foxy, up till now all your oc have been white/european lol, how about a Mexican or Latina gf for JK next 🥺🥺🥺
I know you asked a sweet short question, but I have a long answer so you can see how very deeply and to heart I take your request:
These requests both flatter and stress me out! I absolutely want to continue to diversify my characters. I also am aware of the ways I can fuck it up as a white writer, particularly when I'm writing FFs where sure, it's not like I don't research and often have friends I can discuss, but it's not the depth of critique something I wrote would go through for official publication (ideally...) I put a lot of effort into my stories, but it's also fanfiction I'm writing for free on the internet, so I just can't put the depth of research and review in that I would for like, a book I'm officially publishing where I have greater money, time, and resources.
For example, in my Nurse Tae story, Sydney is black. I've already had someone ask me why she doesn't "sound black." That is a very loaded and complicated question to receive about her that I, as a white person, am not appropriate to engage with. But arguably, as the creator of that character, I also do need to be able to answer for the choices I make. I don't find it difficult at all to write genetic diversity or characters who are not white but also not deeply tied with a culture that isn't one I’m personally in or close to, but when I start getting deeper into cultural diversity, that's when there should be more scrutiny and also when I can get it very wrong as someone not writing from within that community, if that's the expectation of that character.
There's this tricky reality (that actually was one of the main reasons I stepped away from real-world writing) where we can and should have MUCH more diversity in leading characters in all forms of media. But that also should come from more diverse voices, not just white people writing more diversity. And while I do have a very diverse family and friend group, I'm still white. So it sends me down this spiral of: should I just shut up and get out of the way? should I stop putting stuff out that's easy because it's familiar even though it would slow down my output and significantly alter the stories I want to tell because of the additional layers that race/racism in my country add to understanding a characters' situation like Isabella or Sasha? I'm not deeply anxious about whether I offend a Scottish person because of the way I portray Iain in Meadow, but I would absolutely feel like an asshole white person if Dominique felt like an offensive portrayal of a Puerto Rican woman.
One thing though that I do want to bring up is that I am learning a lot about what codes characters for readers, even in fantasy/hybrid worlds where "real world" rules don't necessarily apply. I'm definitely continuing to learn and grow outside of my own experiences and bias about accidental ways I inherently code a character because of assumptions/language that are inherent to me and I appreciate everyone who pushes me to do that! I also am learning that even in fantasy worlds, in the absence of explicit non-white coding, people will code a character as white with the slightest nudge. Pippa and Marguerite were two examples of this, where I tried to actually leave their appearance mostly up to the reader until late in the story where it was clear through comments everyone had coded them as white anyway. They both came from places where they could be any skin tone and "our world" expectations for their names don't necessarily apply (ie, there is no France in Thedas, and Orlais is not a homogenously white country) So when Zoe entered in Sugar Fairy, I more explicitly coded her as bi-racial. Pippa's blue eyes are because she's a leopard, not because I saw her as white (her name Philomela is ancient Greek mythology; I've seen plenty of non-white characters with Greek names and did not consider this as inherently white)(also same with Bronwen's silver eyes, those were omega silver eyes, not European). Isabella has come across as entirely white to readers it sounds like, even though she and JK both mention her skin is "tanner” than his, her kids are the light coloring of their dads, and we don't know anything about Isabella's dad's race or ethnicity.
This will all continue to be interesting in my next two long stories. In both stories, the OCs are non-white (and one is actually Latina in my mind!). But in one, it's a fantasy historical world where I can't rely on any quick-cultural references to establish that (as in, I don't know if you'll read her and be appeased that she's Latina because it's not a 1:1 with our world) and in the other, there's a split between the characters heritage and her lifestyle, how she relates to that culture.
Another interesting aspect of all of this is that there is no easy answer, which makes me feel a little better about spending so much time thinking about it. I have non-white friends who very much encourage me to write non-white characters and insist I shouldn't worry so much about cultural differences, that people will understand my intentions if I get things wrong as long as I'm not "straying too far out of my lane" and fix it if I fuck up. I also have non-white friends who flat out tell me I should not do it and should just point people to non-white writers (this was specifically when talking with a group of friends about Sydney). If I can't even get consensus in this among my friend group (who are all people who know me and my good intentions), imagine my anxiety about opening myself up to scrutiny of the internet. EEK.
I realize this is a looooong response to probably what you meant as a very simply and straight-forward question! You just want to see me write characters who you can identify more with or who show a broader range (whether that means physically, culturally, etc.) I just wanted to answer again that I think about these things a lot, very seriously. I'll definitely continue to try and expand my character portfolio. But I also very much encourage everyone to find, support, and promote writers of color. I learn so much from reading characters written by writers of color, and while I want to write the diverse worlds I want to see, I also don't want to be part of a system of privilege that makes it so much more difficult for creators of color to get attention for their work.

padmé’s parade gown:
Tumblr media
here are the previous ones:
summer meadow outfit
wedding outfit
geonosis outfit
my favorite padmé outfits
funeral outfit
battle outfit
tatooine peasant disguise
Tumblr media
this pale pink ceremonial dress, which appears at the end of “phantom menace”, shows many signs of naboo fashion, as well as uses symbolism in the many intricate parts of the piece. for example, there is a naboo emblem that hangs from the banner around padmé’s neck and the plain white dress symbolizes pure happiness for the peace on naboo.
Tumblr media
the concept design for this costume, done by iain mccaig, show the development of the piece into what it became. below, i’ll talk about the historical influences of the piece, which can also been seen in the concept drawings.
Tumblr media
first, the myriad silk pink cape that padmé wears. so, the flowery flow of the cape represents a type of flower found in padmé’s home village, flowers that bloom once every 88 years, showing how the new peace is the same as a celebration of the flowers blooming. another fun fact: these flowers also look like traditional japanese cherry blossoms!
Tumblr media
another historical influence for this piece is late elizabethan era fashion, as well as traditional geisha parasols, both seen in the aureate fan padmé wears. the scrolling vine embroidery, ivory organize fabric, and decorative spike tips all work together in the fan to pull together the piece. the fan represents continuity, according to ancient naboo fashion.
Tumblr media
something else to mention about this piece is the resemblance to the ceremonial white dress princess leia wears after the battle of yavin IV. both wear white, floor length dresses with elaborate braids and simple jewelry. this isn’t the first time you see a resemblance: i’ve talked about it before in the geonosis piece. like mother like daughter.
Tumblr media
padmé’s hair in this outfit consists of a bun with five crescent shaped sections and a simple silver jeweled headdress with a royal diadem. the effect looks like a bow, reminding me of the 1910s hairstyles.
Tumblr media
the makeup on padmé’s face is inspired by geisha’s white makeup originating from the heian period. the geisha wore the makeup in order to highlight their facial expressions due to the poor lighting of the period and because they performed at night. padmé wore the makeup to represent ceremony and happiness.
Tumblr media
the headpiece that padmé wears resealables antique bollywood headdresses, or an antique maang tikka. a maang tikka is a piece of jewelry worn by indian women in the forehead to give the wearer, usually a bride, wisdom, power, and will.
Tumblr media
overall, i think this piece is so beautiful and graceful, and gives padmé a way to show her extensive style and evolving wardrobe. it is so different from the other, more regal looks in “phantom menace”, but i think it works for the celebration. and i always love a callback to leia so.

How much of Fitz smiling at Alya is just Iain loving children
Ngl anon, one of the BIGGEST REASONS I was so looking forward to the secret kid theory (gah, I remember the time I wasn’t really on board with that theory last year/early this year(?) ksldjlakdjasd lol) was bc of the previous interactions we’ve seen of Iain with kids. He adores Benny (Jedmo’s daughter) and he was so adorable with the kid/baby actor who played as his baby brother in “Lost River”.
And by golly did he deliver in the series finale. I honestly teared up at the scene of him playing around with Alya on the meadow -- I wished for a dad!Fitz scene and the show gave me that 😭🤧😭🤧
Honestly, give Iain more roles that involve children!!!!!

101 - Psychogeography and Walking Photographic Practice
It is funny how ideas, thoughts and philosophies can eventually find themselves to meld together with one’s own practice - even from years ago. When I started taking photography seriously, I didn’t necessarily have an aim to where I was going or what I was going to shoot. I enjoyed the idea of just going out with my camera, and taking photos of things that I find within the environment that I would find myself in. This was heightened by my previous interest in street photography, which was mostly inspired by watching countless hours of DigitalRev TV videos on YouTube, with Kai and Lok wandering the streets of Hong Kong reviewing camera equipment with a comedic and sarcastic tone which I enjoyed. By watching these videos, I was inspired to just go out with my camera and see what I could find, almost as if I was hunting for that particular shot. What was different then, was that I was photographing people which is completely on the different end of the photographic spectrum that I undertake now.
Tumblr media
Man with Cat - September 2016 - Canon EOS 650, 50mm F1.8 STM - Ilford XP2 Super
Eventually, I would undertake this practice of going out with my camera to an undisclosed location with an old friend of mine, Thom. Before the lockdown ridden restricted world we live in now, I would hop on a train, travel to places such as Exeter, Teignmouth, Torquay, Newton Abbot and Plymouth to meet up with him and wander around to different locations, often accompanied with some VSOP fuelled coffee and miscellaneous ramblings about philosophy and pop culture. At the time, I didn’t realise what I was undertaking and that it was also being practiced by many other people, and there was a whole philosophy around it and where it all came from. It wasn’t until I researched more into what psychogeography was, I learned that it was Guy Debord that coined and refined the term - a person who I researched in my earlier work around The Society of the Spectacle, which focused on the society being a spectacle, commodity fetishism and loosely recycled ideas of Marxism. Another aspect which relates to psychogeography is the flaneur; one who saunters around and observes society. Sound familiar?
Psychogeography is the melding of psychology and geography, both things that would seemingly be unrelated, but by putting them together, we find a term which has its aim on how a particular space makes us feel and what the space really is upon inspection. Often, we drift from place to place without really taking in what we are seeing or feeling. These are often non-places, which Marc Auge hypotheses in Non-Places: Introduction to an Anthropology of Supermodernity. Auge sets out to describe how it is that our stage of modernity creates transitional and temporary spaces, particularly motorways, shopping centres and transportation terminals. These are just a few examples of spaces where time isn’t spent in large quantities, places where we are transitioning from A to Z, where these spaces are somewhere between B to Y, often of little notoriety and mostly anonymous in location. These non-places are sometimes barren, with no people around, quiet and uncanny. Feelings of being isolated, alienated, estranged and listless are just some emotions that can be felt in these depersonalised landscapes, but only if one can really take in their surroundings to just what it is they are surrounded by.
It is of course no secret that I undertake a walking practice. More often than not, I don’t have a bulletproof plan for what it is that I am looking for. Usually, I head in a direction and see what happens. This is because I like to observe my surroundings and take in what is around me, and to see what invokes the feelings and emotions that I want to convey. This means that I end up in some strange places, with the feelings only heightened by what I am listening to through my headphones, or the deafening silence if not. On the odd occasion, I would trawl through Google Earth, dropping pins on potential locations which could work. This can only be found out if I walk to these particular locations and what I can find on the way, yet as Street View sometimes hasn’t been updated since 2009, some places simply either don’t exist or have been changed completely. But, this brings up an interesting area to psychogeography, which is the history of the place which can often turn into a palimpsest of itself.
Plymouth is a good example of a geographic palimpsest, as Plymouth’s history is rich and varied, and being mostly destroyed during the many air raids undertaken by the Luftwaffe, the city had to be completely rebuilt with Sir Patrick Abercrombie and James Paton Watson setting an ambitious plan to make Plymouth a hive of activity and a city to marvel. The main city was surrounded by a loop, with a central spine running through. The remains of the historic buildings were replaced with concrete brutalist monoliths and limestone structures, with some traces of the past surviving the brutal attacks on the city. An example of this is Charles Church, which was mostly destroyed in 1941 from incendiary bombs, but now acts as a memorial to those that died during the raids, and takes pride of place in a roundabout, directing traffic across the city and also being mostly inaccessible due to the high rate of traffic. Yet, the church is surrounded by contemporary architecture which are often labelled as ugly or terribly designed, such as Drake Circus winning the first ever Carbuncle Cup, voted as the worst new building in the United Kingdom in 2006 (Designing Buildings, 2020).
At the core of psychogeography, is how the location plays upon one’s psyche, to really take in what it is that surrounds us and observing details about how it is created, what features within it and how being put together, it makes one feel. It is only by walking to these places we can truly exist in the temporary spaces, with Will Self describing the walker as ‘an insurgent against the contemporary world, an ambulatory time traveller.’ (Independent, 2011). Iain Sinclair is a notable name within the psychogeographical field, walking the entirety of the M25 which encompasses London and noting  what he felt and saw, noting the opening on the M25 was ‘the end of London and its liberties’ (Guardian, 2003), with the M25 replacing the Thames’ job of shifting contraband and illegal/legal cargo and acting as a circle road that doesn’t go anywhere, with people often getting stuck in their cars, trapped in traffic.
Tumblr media
Chelson Meadow - December 2020 - Mamiya 7ii, 65mm F4 , Ilford XP2 Super
The M25 is often surrounded by obscenery, which is a scene filled with obscenity and things which are considered to be obscene. Sinclair cites the Beckton Alp as a good example of obscenery. Beckton Alp is a heap of old gas spoils from the Beckton Gas Works, creating a toxic and lurid ominous mound which found a brief second life as a ski slope for budding ski enthuiasts, and where Stanley Kubric filmed the battle scene at the end of Full Metal Jacket (Guardian, 2003). The Beckton Alp is just one of many inhospitably dangerous aspects that we have created since the industrial revolution, which mirrors Chelson Meadow. Previously reclaimed land and a horse racetrack, it later became a landfill site where it was tufted over with millions of tons of topsoil and turf, with gas escaping from the landfill beneath going back into the National Grid. Upon a quick glance, it looks like a naturally formed hill, but just like Beckton Alp, it is a toxic and harmful mass of detritus and hazardous waste which upon appearance seems like a lovely place for recreation. It is only by walking, acting as a flaneur and using a form of psychogeography can we see these spaces and the impact that they have, as without really looking at what our urban spaces are made of, they are just that; urban spaces. It is only when you deconstruct what it is that manufacturers these spaces, can we allow ourselves to feel and note how it affects our psyche. It also goes back into the space being a palimpsest, either showing parts of its history obviously or obscured by changes over time. This history of the site is as relevant as it is now, as it gives the location a context with how it was then, compared to how it is now.
I have come to the realisation that I am a photographic psychogeographer, or photographic flaneur, with a similar practice to Iain Sinclair where I walk to locations, observe what is around me and how it makes me feel. The spaces that I often find myself by getting lost on the way are isolating from the usually busy streets of the city, mostly being quiet housing estates or derelict industrial estates. Most of the time, these are places where time doesn’t seem to exist, as if it stands still as the wind blows leaves and litter across the road. Without looking at the space with the gaze of a psychogeographer, the place is inherently anonymous and of little notoriety, frequently being unnoticed by the layman and rarely inspected. What I intend to do with my photography is to explore these locations by sauntering from place to place, and invoking feelings of estrangement, isolation, alienation and political malaise of which our system is responsible for, with the spaces reflecting these feelings due to the depersonalised and dehumanised landscapes. And similarly to Sinclair, I document my findings and experiences from the locations that I visit, but in a more catatonic and frantic fashion about how the location plays upon my psyche and reflects upon our state of supermodernity. What Epochal Territories is intended to do is to explore the relationship between these spaces and the feelings that modernity creates, and how modernity is often unfulfilling and laden with ennui. The starkness of the space is also reflected by the monochromatic nature of the photograph, as there is no colour and no joy to be seen, only the territories of the epoch.

Nova Scotia reports 86 new cases of COVID-19 Saturday, active cases drop to 1,509
Nova Scotia health officials are reporting 86 new COVID-19 cases Saturday, as the active number of cases in the province drops to 1,509.
The 86 new cases is Nova Scotia's lowest single day increase since April 30.
"I'm pleased to see that our new case number is a double-digit figure for the first time in more than two weeks," said N.S. Premier Iain Rankin in a release. "Thanks to the sacrifices of Nova Scotians, we're seeing hopeful signs of a downward trend. However, we must stick with the restrictions and public health measures to stop the spread while we continue to vaccinate more and more Nova Scotians."
In a news release from the province, it says 66 of the cases are in the province's Central zone, 11 are in the Eastern zone, four are in the Western zone, and five are in the Northern zone.
"Today's new case number shows that things are heading in the right direction, and the hard work we're doing is helping to slow the spread," said Dr. Robert Strang, Nova Scotia's chief medical officer of health. "We all must continue to follow the public health protocols to bring those numbers down and be in a position to start re-opening in June."
Health officials say there is evidence of community spread in Nova Scotia's Central zone.
Public Health says the province’s other zones– Eastern, Northern, and Western– are being monitored for signs of community spread.
One of the cases in Central Zone involves a staff member at The Ivy Meadows, a long-term care facility in Beaver Bank. At the direction of public health and as an added precaution, residents and staff from the affected unit are being tested. Most residents have been fully vaccinated with two doses of COVID-19 vaccine.
The province says 115 previously reported cases are now considered resolved, with the total number of active cases dropping to 1,509.
N.S. COVID-19 CASE DATA
The Nova Scotia Health Authority’s labs completed 10,272 tests on Friday, bringing the total number of tests since the pandemic began to 718,984.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been 4,610 COVID-19 cases in Nova Scotia. Of those, 3,030 cases have recovered and 72 people have died due to the novel coronavirus.
According to the province's online dashboard, there are currently 96 individuals in hospital, 23 of which are in the intensive care unit.
Since April 1, there have been 2,868 positive COVID-19 cases and six deaths. Cases range in age from under 10 to over 90. Of the new cases since April 1, 1,354 are now considered resolved.
There are cases confirmed across the province, but most have been identified in the Central Zone, which contains the Halifax Regional Municipality.
The provincial government says cumulative cases by zone may change as data is updated in Panorama, the province’s electronic information system.
The numbers reflect where a person lives and not where their sample was collected.
Western Zone: 235 cases (75 active cases)
Central Zone: 3,805 cases (1,252 active cases)
Northern Zone: 226 cases (56 active case)
Eastern Zone: 344 cases (126 active cases)
The provincial state of emergency, which was first declared on March 22, 2020, has been extended to May 30, 2021.
VACCINE UPDATE
Nova Scotia's COVID-19 online dashboard provides an update on the amount of vaccines that have been administered to date.
As of Friday, 415,570 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered. Of those, 38,830 are Nova Scotians who have received their second dose.
As of Tuesday, Nova Scotia has received a total of 466,900 doses of COVID-19 vaccine since Dec. 15.
Dr. Robert Strang, Nova Scotia's chief medical officer of health, says as of Thursday, 45 per cent of eligible Nova Scotians have had one or more doses of COVID-19 vaccine.
He says the province is ahead of schedule in regards to getting everyone vaccinated.
Also on Friday, the province announced Nova Scotians aged 35 to 39 are now eligible to begin booking appointments for the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines.
Strang says they are also looking into the time between first and second doses, and if it can be shortened at this time.
"Second-dose appointments are automatically booked 105 days after the first-dose appointment but we may be able to move that timeline up and also allow more flexibility in the location where you can get immunized," said Strang.
CHANGES TO ASYMPTOMATIC TESTING STRATEGY
In order to address the test result backlog, Nova Scotia is shifting their COVID-19 asymptomatic testing strategy.
In the interim, most Nova Scotians are encouraged to use pop-up testing sites instead of booking a COVID-19 lab test over the next few days.
Individuals under the following categories are still encouraged to book lab tests:
anyone with symptoms
anyone who has been notified that they are a close contact of a known case
anyone who has been at an exposure location
anyone who has travelled outside Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador
Public health says anyone who does not meet the above criteria and has already booked an appointment should cancel it following the instructions provided in their confirmation email.
The province says they are making an effort to increase rapid testing capacity around the province.
Pop-up testing locations being provided on Friday include:
Alderney Gate Public Library, Dartmouth from noon to 7 p.m.
Bridgewater Cineplex, 349 Lahave St from noon to 6 p.m.
Central Spryfield Elementary School, 364 Herring Cove Rd from noon to 7 p.m
Centre 200, 481 George St, Sydney from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Halifax Central Library from noon to 7 p.m.
Halifax Convention Centre, Halifax from noon to 7 p.m.
John Martin School - 7 Brule St. Dartmouth from noon to 7 p.m.
COVID ALERT APP
Canada’s COVID-19 Alert app is available in Nova Scotia.
The app, which can be downloaded through the Apple App Store or Google Play, notifies users if they may have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.
There were a series of exposures released by Nova Scotia Health on Friday evening. For a list of the latest exposures, you can go the exposures page on the Nova Scotia Health website.
LIST OF SYMPTOMS
Anyone who experiences a fever or new or worsening cough, or two or more of the following new or worsening symptoms, is encouraged to take an online test or call 811 to determine if they need to be tested for COVID-19:
Sore throat
Headache
Shortness of breath
Runny nose/nasal congestion
