I really appreciate all your guys compliments on my twyla cosplay! Here are some progress/detail photos of the cosplay! I made everything by hand, mostly using cardboard and craft foam lol because I'm poor. Long text post incoming:
The belt was made with craft foam and a wooden egg from Michaels easter stuff, I actually made it twice. The first time I used a Styrofoam ball and carved it but I didn't like how it looked. Around the time I finished the first belt I also got my Twyla doll in the mail and was able to see the belt up close, and it really didn't match so I remade it and I'm a lot happier now! It also glows in the dark :D
For the wig I got a layered mint wig from Arda (I don't remember the specific name, I wanted Nina but they didn't have her in the right color) and some lavender wefts which I sewed in. Then I had to recurl the whole wig 3 times because I am very bad at wig styling!! This was my last attempt and I'm very happy with it (compared to the first two attempts anyway) the hair piece is also made of craft foam and covered in silver fabric which I painted over. It has a button for a doorknob!
For the sweater I also made it twice, once using fabric off the shelf which was similar to her pattern but I ended up really not liking it. So I took a chance on joann's new fabric customizer, I drew out the pattern myself on clip studio and ordered it in a jersey knit (I wanted more of a sweater material but it wasn't available. Probably for the best since I wore this in July lol) and it came out great!! It's a little pricey, but for a mh cosplay I think it's a must. I got lucky and found the stretch spiderweb fabric and this pretty purple glitter tulle (which also glows in the dark!!) And then I just added spider buttons and did a blue blanket stitch around the edges! The skirt also has pockets ;)
The shoes were really fun to make, I had an old pair of platform clogs I never ever wore, so I transformed them into twylas iconic strappy platforms. I covered the heels with more craft foam, leaving a gap for her window detail. I used real fabric for the curtain detail because I thought it would be cuter. The shoe cover is made with some stretch purple pleather I've had forever, and I sewed the spiderweb texture with my machine. They close with Velcro for easy on and off shoe changes (I wore slippers for most of the day lol these are NOT con friendly shoes)
Both the book and the purse have cardboard bases (seriously use more cardboard in your props, it's free) the purse is covered in purple felt and is a functional purse, with a zipper and a lining and everything. The book also opens! It's got false pages so I kept my phone and other stuff in there for easy access all day. It uses a magnetic purse clasp to close. I lined the whole thing with navy velvet and used more foam for the covers and the binding, then hand painted the whole design (more glow in the dark!!) I made the book last minute, I wasn't originally planning to include it in the cosplay, but it turned out being my favorite part of the look!
Overall I had a great time cosplaying Twyla, I got loads of compliments at the con and I actually saw maybe 5 other people doing mh cosplays? Mostly draculaura, I got a few pictures with them, it was really fun! I wasn't expecting anyone else to really be into monster high there since it tends to be more of an anime focused convention, so that was a fun surprise. I did enter this cosplay in their craftsmanship contest and sadly didn't win anything, the other cosplays in my division were SO detailed.
Mh fans have all been lovely with all the content I've been posting so I just wanted to say thanks for all the nice things you guys put in tags and all the compliments I got at the con! You're all super sweet!
