The Deep Tate

This is a piece that I was going to do for another website, a kind of “ten songs to know her by’”, but it’s gotten away from that a bit so I thought I’d just put it up here and then if no one reads it then that’s pretty standard anyway. I've done a playlist which i've placed at the end, featuring all the songs i that mentioned along the way (a few too many than i was supposed to talk about).

Canadian pop star Tate Mcrae is a precocious talent, a viral sensation who’d managed to catapult herself to fame before she’d even left her teens. I’ve only known about her for a few months now but she’s already captured me as a fan, with her second album “Think Later” quickly becoming one of my favourites of last year. Mcrae started out in her (even younger) youth as a professional dancer, uploading her self penned songs to YouTube alongside videos of her routines. She first broke into the charts in 2020 - aged just 17 - with the moody revenge ballad You Broke Me First, a massive international hit during lockdown that clocked up over a billion streams on Spotify.

From there, she began to navigate the trickier dance of establishing herself as a regular chart fixture, reaching the UK Top 10 with her increasingly pop/rock focused debut LP, “I Used To Think I Could Fly” in 2022. But the real story is what she’s done since then: 2023 was a huge year for her as she collaborated with OneRepublic star and Taylor Swift associate Ryan Tedder, adopting a more straightforward pop sound and taking the charts by storm. Much of this was down to "Greedy", one of the biggest songs of last year, which took an entertaining swipe at sleazy older men and went top three in every country you might feasibly shake a stick at. Added to that, the release of the excellent ‘Think Later’ album helped to cement her reputation as one of pop’s megastars in waiting.

Though there’s plenty of earlier material (her first viral hit, the characteristically accomplished “One Day”, was written and recorded when she was just 14 years old), it’s probably best to start with "You Broke Me First". Tate’s first big hit was something that she struggled to outgrow for a while but its uncomfortable intensity still feels striking. Built around a narrative of betrayal, its heroine recounts the hurt of being dumped and her understandable refusal to take the repentant boyfriend back: so far so standard. But what sticks out about it is the low-key vicious tone that underpins the song: the title is a big hint that this is her moment of vengeance and she intends to milk it for all it’s worth. The doomy synthetic backing plays up all of this heavily and the distorted autotune on her slightly husky, cute but tough vocal style only adds to the unnerving vibe of it all. Is this “serious” music? I’m going to say it sounds a lot like it.

But for a while afterwards, whilst not really dropping out of sight, Mcrae did appear to get stuck in the mode of moody trap ballad girl, marketed as a kind of junior Billie Eilish (with whom she’d collaborated previously on the track “Tear Myself Apart”) and seeming to lack a clear-cut identity of her own. 2021’s “Too Young To Be Sad” EP was actually pretty good, with the softer styled “r u ok” (as much as it’s a Billie clone, it is at least a good one) and the warm acoustic closer “Wish I Loved You In The 90s” being particular highlights. But a distinct fault was that it tended to get caught up pursuing lesser versions of her big single to slightly diminishing returns, something that was made all the more obvious by its inclusion. There’s a pattern after a little known singer has a huge hit that looks a lot like ‘bloody hell, what do we do now?’, with talented kids often finding out that they’ve not got much else in the locker. While the quality didn’t drop all that much, the hits were not forthcoming and it looked like Mcrae was starting to tread water a bit.

But by the time of her first full length album, 2022’s “I Used To Think I Could Fly”, she was beginning to find her way somewhat more purposefully, albeit still in a slightly haphazard manner. Some of its best songs come from a turn to breezy pop rock, with “She’s All I Wanna Be” in particular providing her with both a standout track and a welcome hit single. Centred around comparing herself to the hot girl who threatens her relationship, Mcrae is still working thru her adolescent anxieties but the tone is lighter, the guitars let rip a bit and, combined with her ever keen sense of melody (the characteristic through-line that connects all of her best songs) the whole feels a lot more fun than she’d hitherto managed to project.

That’s not to say that her sad girl tunes were in any sense gone but neither were they all a wash out: indeed much of the strength of her songwriting at this point comes down to the touching believability of her teenager set pieces. The defiant “I’m So Gone” combines a break-up narrative with a punchier trap pop sound, and while there are still a few straightforward YBMF reruns, they were often pretty good once you got used to her patter (the piano led “Chaotic” is a particular highlight). It was clearly a good idea for her to start mixing up her sound though and songs like the wonderfully trashy rocker “What Would You Do?” are an entertaining diversion from all the misery, mining some attitude to clap back at a neglectful boyfriend in a lyrical style that would in time become a lot more familiar. The album still has the odd duffer here and there but the message was clear: Tate was on her way!

While “I Used To Think I Could Fly” feels like a pretty good debut, it’s not without its flaws. Some of the songs come off as a bit flimsy and there’s also a sense in which it feels more like a grab bag than a fully coherent project. The production roll includes Adele collaborator Greg Kurstin alongside other star names like Charlie Puth and Finneas O’Connell and while there’s certainly a lot of talent on show, it also sounds like a great many cooks are gathered around the pot. But since she released her excellent second album, Tate has entered something approaching a state of grace for me (A Tate Of Grace? A State Of Tate?) and i’ve found it generally easier to get along with her earlier stuff too.

Her shift to a higher level began in late 2022, firstly on the twinkly, bass driven “Uh-Oh” and then more powerfully with“10.35”, a banging DJ/pop girl collaboration with Tiësto that finally managed to push her back into the UK Top 10. Playing to her melodic strengths, it takes the moodiness of You Broke Me First but allies it to a beat that goes enjoyably hard, with her knack for a tune sweetening its combination of dancefloor darkness and pop bounce. This was followed last autumn by a second full-on megahit, "Greedy", the first Tate Mcrae song I heard and one that seems likely to be her signature tune for a while to come. Built around a 00s era Timberland-style beat, Tate recounts a nightclub discussion with an older guy who comes onto her, only to be told “I’ll put you thru hell just to know me yeah yeah!” during its swooping, almost bombastic chorus. Greedy was a mass of insistent hooks, rolling rhythms and snappy hot girl catchphrases that became an instant hit, camping out in the UK Top 5 for weeks on end and hitting #1 on a dozen charts around the world, including her native Canada and the Billboard Global 200.

Aside from the stylistic changes she’d made since her last round in the spotlight, perhaps the most significant difference from "You Broke Me First" was that this time Mcrae had come prepared with some solid follow ups. Her next single "Exes" kept up the high standard and closed out the year with another top 20 hit. Propelled by a harder trap rhythm than previous efforts, the song is built around an almost childishly gleeful vocal that plays on her new, edgier image, calling out her old boyfriends in a kind of Canadian version of the “Am I bovvered?” routine whilst singing in a fast paced, almost hip hop-style which engagingly breaks through the rhythm of the song. Tate says that she “steps into a different body sometimes when I’m doing songs like Greedy and Exes” and certainly the change here from her previous mopery feels both bracing and wickedly enjoyable.

The album, “Think Later”, followed at the end of the year and was to my mind a much better record that its predecessor. Whereas that LP had at times felt a bit ponderous, producer Ryan Tedder’s rattling beats and snappy arrangements gave "Think Later" a new level of firepower, creating a much more energetic backdrop for Tate’s various romantic misadventures. And this time, rather than simply bemoaning her situation, she seemed far more likely to be putting herself in the driving seat: whether it was her dreams of snaring someone else’s boyfriend amidst the catchy synth attack of "Hurt My Feelings" or the bad girl adventures of the thumping title track, Tate often plays an intriguing central character, one who’s far more liable to be causing mischief than weeping away in private. The more forceful propulsion also keeps the ballads from becoming too gloomy and, just occasionally, as on the excellent messy relationship confessional "Stay Done", Mcrae and her team manage to create something genuinely beautiful, as she calls on all of her melodic gifts and sweet natured charm to turn in a gorgeous acoustic tearjerker.

“Think Later” has only been out for a couple of months but it already looks set to be a bigger album than its predecessor and her sustained success has led some to speculate whether Tate might be pop’s Next Big Thing, a role seemingly now vacant in this more ephemeral era of Tik Tok hits and viral sensations (a landscape that, as a Youtube native, she appears more confident in than many of her peers). My own feeling is that, while I love her records dearly, I’m unsure whether she’s up to making that transition. Certainly, Mcrae seems to me not quite the finished article. She still needs to take more quality control over the sad girl stuff - whilst it generally works much better on "Think Later", the album closes with two underwhelming ballads, at least one of which should have been left off the record. And while she's perfectly attuned to the swirl of youthful romantic concerns that underpin many of her best songs, attempts to go deeper seem to stumble just a little, with a song like "Calgary" being a case in point - a serious acoustic number which works well aside from a slight clumsiness in the lyrics.

But there's still plenty of time for her to reach perfection. Despite having been around for a while now, it’s useful to remember that she’s only 20 years old: even Taylor Swift wasn’t on her best game for another couple of albums yet. And maybe it doesn't matter that much anyway. I don’t claim anything very sophisticated for Tate Mcrae - no trails are being blazed here - but in terms of my own experience, the most important questions are: would I rather be listening to her than some more acclaimed act who offers far less fun, energy and/or melodramatic weight? Absolutely! Do I often find myself singing along inappropriately to "Greedy", despite not in fact being a 20 year old hot girl superstar? Guilty as charged! The bottom line here is all that she’s already achieved: she’s a talented artist creating consistently thrilling music, the creator of both a songworld that feels increasingly immersive and a style that’s evolved intelligently under huge pressure and, perhaps most importantly, someone who is starting to up the stakes with each successive release. More than anything, she’s a young woman who’s navigated the challenge of moving on from uploading YouTube videos of herself singing into a webcam to taking on the international charts, not just once but several times over. Given that form, I wouldn’t bet against her. As she says on "Think Later", “I do it so well”.

I've just started watching the rerun and I think I'm gonna cry??? The brainrot is real. Gonna just liveblog in this post so I can reread my train of thought later. So, for your entertainment: my rundown of the KPWT

I can't begin to explain the way "Why don't you stay" pulls on my heartstrings. For me, it's up there in my top 5 of most beautiful songs ever (with Harry Styles' Sign of the Times & Pink Floyd's Wish you were here, for example). YES MOM. Having Anita dance to Doja Cat makes no sense at all (not for her character nor for her amount of screentime) but I'm so here for it. Might be the pansexual in me speaking.

And BAM suddenly we understand why everybody's always hyping up Barcode. That kid is gonna be BIG. He's a totally different person when he's on stage doing his thing - hard to imagine the cute and shy kid he is rest of the time.

Love how Anita/Namphueng is like 'let me put a coat over you' while he's already wearing like, 5 layers

I know it's controversial but I love that little grain of KimChay closure they've given us. I liked how they ended in the series: Kim realising that he has a lot of groveling to do and Chay taking agency - but not ending together, giving Chay space and time. He's 19 - I like to imagine he takes a few years to grow up and learn to be himself before they collide again, and take it from there.

THERE IT IS. I was waiting (after having watched the clips on youtube for daaaaays). This is devastatingly beautiful for me (again, for reason I can't explain myself). It's not even the fact that it's in English - by now I've become so used to the Thai version that the sounds are wrong. But omg the scenery and setting. The piano, the build-up, the choir and Jeff just releasing it. I honestly don't know why this man isn't world wide famous yet (yes I will die on this hill). It will take a long time before I'm over this.

Honestly the beach bar part is one I liked less. Even if we have KinnPorsche being adorable and MileApo going 60% tiddies again. Mile has an amazing and soothing voice tho. And his fingers while playing guitar are 🥵

At first I thought the places on the those wooden signs might be clues to future stops of the world tour, but 'Iceland' is on them and although that would be awesome, I don't see it happening anytime soon 😅

It will never not be funny to me how they give us a Minor family montage with the melancholic music and sad Vegas moments and then have Bible flying over the stage half naked to Imagine Dragons' Believer.

And that's not even mentioning what comes next.

Ta entering on skateboard is such a Macau thing. But I have conflicting feelings about the outfit - but only because I thought Macau was like 15 and that makes my tingly feelings very inappropriate.

okay this one was in my liked songs for a really long time i have literally no idea if its still there and I have it in about every playlist I can fit it in, I'm actually obsessed w the bridge and it's so good it's one of the only hsmtmts songs on my mums liked songs playlist. this one is magnificent and when he sung it in the ep i cried <3

2. red means love

this one HAD to be here it is... my song. I own it. no but singing it brings me so much comfort? and I played it/sung it enough my mum would do the ooh ooh bit in the chorus and she tried to sing it when I was scared to get my first jab. also the performance for this is so cute like I can't listen to the song itself anymore but whenever I skip it I smile dkfkf

this is. up for debate. I recently put it back into my likes after hearing my mum playing it bc I forgot how good it was, however this space is probably a tie with finally free as that one is so good and really brings joy to my heart so yeah I'd probably put finally free there but JUST because of when I'm writing this I'll put just for a moment

second chance which I have a LOT of fun singing along w like I get to do funny voices and it's so dramatic I love (also rickys 'beEegin again' things in the background while everyone else sings a Proper Part gets me giggling like an idiot everytime and who wouldn’t rate that kind of joy?)

hihihi! I finally listened to the whole of speak now (taylor's version) so here's my rating!

• Mine - Perfect

10/10, "You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter" SO GOOD, the rhythm is just so danceable and her voice sounds so good!

• Sparks Fly - Amazing

9/10, Such a fun song, it just radiates love and romance, the drums and the guitar is so good.

• Back To December - Perfect

🥇10/10, So emotional, makes me want to scream it in the car, the story behind this song is so special and sweet, I love it.

• Speak Now - Great

9/10, Album title track, so iconic and such a fun listen every time.

• Dear John - Perfect

10/10, I scream this song. It doesn't have as much emotion compared to the original but what can you do? It's such an incredible and moving song.

• Mean - Good

6/10, I like this song, it makes me feel better about stuff, it's just kinda generic that's all but it's still on my playlist because I still really like it.

• The Story Of Us - Amazing

9/10, The "next chapter" and "the end" is like iconic but kinda corny at the same time. This is a banger though, I love the intro. "I've never heard silence quite this loud" is such a good transition into the chorus.

• Never Grow Up - Perfect

10/10, Just because I relate to it so much. The lyrics and the rhythm is so sweet, gives me "Slipping Through My Fingers" vibe.

• Enchanted - Perfect

🥈10/10, So magical, such a sweet song and really lovely lyrics. THE BRIDGEEEEE, THE BACKING VOCALS?!?! That beautiful siren song is so majestic, genuinely.

• Better Than Revenge - Perfect

9/10, I HAD to knock off a point for the lyric change, RIP the mattress line. It also noticeably has less emotion than the original and with a song like "Better Than Revenge", I need that anger! I still love it nonetheless.

• Innocent - Perfect

10/10, The reason she wrote this song is so courteous and so mature, especially that she was 19 when she wrote this. Truly incredible.

• Haunted - Perfect

9/10, I'm so sorry but point knocked off for having less emotion than the original. The original sounded panicked and desperate, this re-record just is missing that. Of course, I still love love love this song and I love the beat and everything. The vocals are incredible in this song.

• Last Kiss - Perfect

9/10, AGAIN knocking off a point because WHERE IS THE SHAKY BREATH?!?! It was such a little detail but it added SO much and I miss it. A devastating song that makes me question everything, which I think was the goal.

• Long Live - Perfect

10/10, So beautifully feminine and a great victory song. A banger to be honest, I really love it.

• Ours - Great

7/10, I like it, it's a very pleasant and chill song, it just doesn't stand out to me much compared to the other very strong songs.

• Superman - Amazing

8/10, A very cute song and a bop, love the beat, I love when Taylor includes a lot of drums.

• Electric Touch (Vault Track) - Perfect

10/10, FALLOUT BOY!!!! This collab is so good and I love it so much.

• When Emma Falls In Love (Vault Track) - Amazing

9/10, Speculated that it's about Emma Stone, this is such a cute song to make about one of your friends. I think it really reflects Taylor's character and it's a very sweet thing to do, especially because this song is so nice.

• I Can See You (Vault Track) - Perfect

10/10, Such a fun song, I love the music video. Great beat, great rhythm, great lyrics.

• Castles Crumbling (Vault Track) - Perfect

🥉10/10, The lyrics?! Wow, they're so powerful. I've seen people say this song reminds them of Eren Yeager and I must agree, and that's a compliment in itself. Taylor has embodied the notion of a hero becoming the villain and that's very moving, especially if she felt this way when she was 19.

YES colde is like . nobody is touching him, he’s up up up up there. What I love about this song is the way he enunciates his words, obviously I’m not a kr speaker but some words are more dramatic than others and it reminds me of how yeonjun has picked that up too in his rapping in 0x1, lonely boy and ring, which kind of shows he’s growing as a writer in general since sometimes words need to sound a certain way to fit in a song when you change the flow? If that makes sense.. and I love the video too like it’s just him walking around, vibing.. it reminds me of the gold mv where he was just riding around london on the bike LMAO

I'd Like To Walk Around In Your Mind was added from Maurice's perspective. Perhaps it fits Alec too...

I think Love At First Sight has the double meaning of the literal title, as well as "wouldn't you like to kiss her" perhaps being... Something Maurice would hear.

An orchestral sountrack. The Boathouse. Unfortunately the Maurice soundtrack is not on spotify. It's on my personal YouTube music version. I added it because it just captures the boathouse the only way the sountrack itself can.

The Word of Your Body (Reprise). MLM people have moment of romantic tension, which culminates in confessions of love. Just had to add it. "Haven't you heard the word of your body?" perfectly describes Alec gifting and showing Maurice the wonder of truest physical affection and love. He lets Maurice be okay with himself, and again, changes everything. Every lyric is perfect.

in my very biased opinion you should definitely check out light on me, it is super cute, i'm completely hooked. i appreciate a.c.e so much for doing an ost for a bl drama.

i watched all the mvs you mentioned, even the ones i'd seen before. ace's arirang was gorgeous, watched it twice, thanks for the rec!

i've committed a kpop sin. i've listened to quite a bit of cix, all of their discog at least once and have a bunch of their songs on my playlists, love jungle for example, but i've never watched any of their mvs?! how foolish of me! jungle mv was amazing. also i'm too uneducated to understand it fully i'm sure. burn it was too short. even the full drama version. i wanted more of it. both of them went straight to my fave mvs playlist no doubt about it.

yeah paranoia is really cool! i like side effects too but i think it's mostly bc it's one of my fave skz tracks and also that one scene with hyunjin and seungmin in it which i love for some reason, it just hits all the right corners in my brain, i'm weird, i fixate on the littlest things. power and awkward silence are soo fun thanks for inspiring me to watch them again. the real was a really fun mv from the ones that were new to me. had to add that to my playlist too.

TV Shows

1. Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013- )

Sooo I became obsessed with this American sitcom that I binge watched this one so hard lol. I even watched their interviews, searched for the cast’s information, stalked their Instagram and Twitter accounts and watched every YouTube videos I can found with them. Idk, I just found myself in love with this show, - especially with Jake and Amy (ohh, i love them so much) I’m still wating for season 6 to arrive on Netflix.

P.S. I even had an unexpected crush on Andy Samberg (Jake Peralta) because of his sense of humor lol (he looked so hot & young at 40)

2. Friends (1994 - 2004)

I started watching the first 2 episodes of Friends last January but I got bored ‘cause I’m not used to watch old american TV shows with background laughs and some of the jokes doesn’t get me. But as I continue to watch the other episodes and I must say, I never knew that this will be so damn good than I expected. I’m now on the third season and I can’t stop. I love everybody on the show, the romances are so healthy, cute and funny. Plus I find Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) veryyy cute. (◕‿◕✿)

Movies

1. My Fair Lady (1964)

Another Audrey Hepburn movie, but was deserved to be played by Julie Andrews. I never really liked the singing voice on the movie. It would be a lot better if Julie voiced the songs instead of Marni Nixon. ಠ╭╮ಠ I’m so dissapointed, but anyways, I liked the whole movie. The plot, the choreography, only, Audrey’s voice in a Cockney Accent isn’t that clear so you can’t understand some of the words she’s saying unless there’s a subtitle. I fell in love with the plot. So amazing, sooo classic.

P.S. Why do women in the 50′s up to the 60′s mostly paired up with old man for a romance movie? It's making the movie worse lol.

If you’re planning to read this and you want just pure butterflies and sweet moments, then this is not recommended for you. This book does not just tackles romance and coming-of-age, you will also encounter some issues like bullying, abuse, and more. As you go deep within the story, you will understand that teen romances has also it’s own issues and problems. This can be an eye opener to those people who witness this kind of issues, what it feels like to be like them and how hard it is to be in their shoes. I was bored reading this at first but not anymore when I realized what the characters were going through in the novel.

I’ve learned so much from Tina about make ups, skin care and stuffs! Her content is very informative, especially on her tutorials, it helped me a lot since I’m lacking knowledge on how to use them properly. She also made a playlist called “Tina Tries It” where she tries a specific brand of make up her subscribers and fans requested, then she will review it in order for us to know if the product is really effective or worth the price. I can’t imagine YouTube without her. I’ve discovered her channel a year ago but I’m liking her content even more.

This girl is great when creating a make up look. I always watch her tutorials when I’m bored and finding myself doing that make up look later. Yes, she’s my inspiration when it comes to fashion. I liked her thrift flip videos, her hauls, try ons and more. Her fashion is very trendy and cool, It made me want t buy clothes whenever I watch some of her videos. I also liked her body built, height and she’s so pretty!

These girls make fashion videos that is Korean inspired based on the weather. They can pull an outfit even if it’s from a thrift store or even if you have 5 clothes available, they can make 10 outfits from them. They have a very nice fashion sense. They do hauls, try-ons and tips on how to pull an outfit nicer.

I was just watching instagram stories when I first heard this. It was a promotional ad from Spotify, I guess? I swiped up and looked for Bruno Major's song and they were freaking relaxing. I saved this on my playlist and played this a hundred times a day. (lol just kidding) but I liked this song very much. It's on repeat!! ≥﹏≤

Another freaking lovely song of Bruno that I'm obsessed with. It's so much relaxing to hear.

3. Movie - Tom Misch

When I was making my playlist to put Bruno Major's songs, I stumbled upon this song. You know I love vintage, soo, I liked the voice over on the song, it's so old, classic and the song is so damn great! You must hear this guys!

4. I Want It That Way - Backstreet Boys

Yeah, I know this is an old song but Brooklyn Nine Nine made me to liked this song even more. (you'll know why if you watched B99, everyone loves that cold open lol)

5. Bless Myself - Lucy Hale

I was making my "elementary" playlist and this song makes me remember a lot of things from my childhood. I remember memorizing all of songs in the movie (A Cinderella Story: Once Upon A Song) and how this movie is in repeat everyday. I miss my childhood so much.

6. Wouldn't It Be Loverly? - Julie Andrews

This one is from My Fair Lady, the stage play and as I watched the movie last few weeks, It made me liked this song from Julie Andrews. This was the best version I've ever heard.

7. I Could Have Danced All Night - Julie Andrews

This is my second favorite song after Wouldn't It Be Loverly by Julie Andrews. This is also from her stage play, My Fair Lady. I fell in love by how hshe delivers those high pitch she made, I hope I can do it too.
