#I'm very excited about experimenting with some craft techniques

First of all, I was very happy to see you share your opinions on assassin tropes and fight scenes. You brought up a lot of good points that I hadn't even considered in my early drafts! That being said, I'm trying to craft a game where the player starts out as a rookie. This means that I'll need a plausible way for someone to join a criminal organization without having grown up in that kind of scene. My original draft had the player join under the threat of exposure to the police, but I'm not sure if that's the best way to go. If you don't mind, then what are your thoughts? What other ways could get someone involved?
So, I'm pretty sure googling, “how to join a criminal organization,” will put you on some kind of list. Or, at least do some really goofy things to your search algorithms. So, with that in mind, this is going to be a little spotty, and there are different kinds of criminal organizations, which utilize different recruitment techniques.
Sometimes, the neighborhood background is mandatory. If your character didn't grow up around the organization, they're not trusted, and would not be able to join at all. This can apply to both gangs and organized crime. In other cases, not having that background would only be a serious impediment or create a glass ceiling.
Another common recruitment point is in prison. If an individual is so inclined, prison can function as an institute of higher education in criminality. It gives the convict access to criminals in an environment where their own status as a criminal is unlikely to be questioned. It gives them the opportunity to network with other criminals, and that can lead to options for (illegal) work once they've finished serving their sentence. I haven't followed up on it in a few years, but there's a YouTube channel by Larry Lawton, who used to be a professional armed robber, who discusses a lot of this in more detail, so his videos may be worth checking out for more context on how prison serves as higher education for aspiring criminals.
In some cases, criminal organizations might directly recruit individuals. The problem here is, most of the time it's children. So it becomes part of that, “growing up in the neighborhood,” background you're trying to avoid. Sometimes this is to use the kids as intentional cutouts, lookouts, or decoys, though not always, and how that shakes out depends on who recruited them.
In very rare cases, a criminal organization might seek to directly recruit an adult. Before you get excited about this, the only cases of this I'm aware of are former military, expats who have been approached by cartels, and this was certainly more of, “an offer you can't refuse,” style of recruitment. Now, to be clear, a criminal organization coercing someone into doing their bidding isn't particularly strange, but it's not usually a form of recruitment.
Another recruitment vector that's been a problem in recent years has been in the US military itself. This was an inevitable outgrowth of the policy of sending convicts to serve in the armed forces. Instead of reforming, they simply bring their criminal experience with them, and start looking around at prospective talent. It's enough of a problem that the military (usually) won't accept someone who's signing up in exchange for a deferred sentence, but some individuals do get through. While I haven't heard anything about it in the last few years, it did lead to a fairly significant gang problem that the armed forces were dealing with.
So, the options aren't extremely extensive. Doing a stint is probably the easiest route in for a character who already tried to get into a life of crime, but doesn't have the connections to make a go of it. If your character just randomly showed up at a criminal hangout, it wouldn't get them any access to the local criminal underworld.

Hey. I’d been putting off making an emergency rq in the hopes that things would get better, but unfortunately they have not. I’m feeling very unhappy and bored, like I’m not going anywhere. I’m content and restless at the same time and it’s incredibly frustrating. I also require large amounts of stimulation to not feel bored which I am having difficulty finding.I hate it and idk what to do so yea. Also not helping is the fact that my skin condition gets worse in summer (it causes my feet to get v sore from walking, standing, and overall doing stuff and causes difficulty walking without a limp).
With this in mind, I’d like to ask for some headcanons of douma doing something stimulating (rock climbing, ice skating, etc) with reader bc they’ve been unhappy and bored for a couple weeks. Thank you <3
Douma & bored s/o - headcanons
A/N: Hi, darling, I'm really sorry to hear that things have been tough lately. It sounds like you're dealing with a lot, and I can understand how frustrating and challenging it must be. Finding ways to cope with boredom and restlessness can be a real struggle, especially when facing other physical challenges too. If you're open to it, exploring new activities or hobbies that align with your interests might help alleviate some of the boredom! ♥

When Douma notices your unhappiness, he decides to surprise you with a magical ice skating experience. Using his Blood Demon Art, he creates a private ice rink in a serene, moonlit clearing. Hand in hand, you glide across the ice. He takes extra care to ensure you feel safe and supported as you twirl and laugh together. "You're doing great, darling!"
To help lift your spirits, Douma suggests you engage in ice sculpting. He provides you with tools that make shaping the ice easier and guides you through the process. As you work side by side, he listens attentively to your thoughts and shares stories about his past experiences, fostering a deeper connection between you.
He suggests an outdoor activity to clear your mind. He takes you on a hiking trail through a picturesque forest, the moonlight filtering through the trees in dappled patterns.
To lift you spirits, Douma arranges a dance workshop in a secluded room within his quarters. He leads you through various dance styles, from traditional to modern, encouraging you to let loose and have fun. "Life is full of surprises, my dear. Let the music guide your movements, Y/N!"
Observing your desire for something new, Douma suggests an intriguing skill to master: Tessenjutsu, the art of using the Japanese war fan in combat. "It's a graceful yet formidable art."
Despite his lack of personal experience with human food (he ate it hundreds of years ago), Douma decides to embark on a culinary adventure by offering to teach you how to cook. "Cooking? I'm excited to learn, but aren't you a demon?" You remark. "Indeed, but I have observed many human activities over the years. Let's explore the realm of flavors together!"
Inspired by a desire to share a piece of artistic world, Douma introduces you to a biwa, a traditional Japanese musical instrument. Douma provides you with a beautifully crafted biwa and patiently explains its strings, frets, and techniques.

Hi Angie!
I hope that you've been doing well. I've got two things for you.
1. Happy belated birthday! I'm sorry for missing it
2. YOU DID BLACKSMITHING???? THATS SO COOL!! Would you mind sharing a bit of how it works? While I doubt I'll ever get the chance to make something in a smithy, I'm curious about the process of forging things.
That's all, take care!
hello! thank for the birthday wish! and yeah an acquaintance owns a forge and he was doing a black friday deal for a forging experience, so for my husbands Christmas present, I booked us a 3 hour experience at the forge. ive actually used a forge before in uni, to make jewellery, but my husband always wanted to try one.
it was interesting actually because in uni I learned how to use various cutting machines and stuff, whereas Aaron (guy who owns the forge), uses traditional methods that are largely dying out. he literally just gave us a bar of steel, we heated it up, then we got hammers and he directed us to an anvil and we just started hitting the metal. it took a long time, and lots of work, but it was so rewarding. we used nothing else, just a fire and a hammer. to start with we shaped where the blade would start by holding the piece of metal against the edge of the anvil and angling it and hammering down to cut into the metal a bit. it took a lot of hammering and then as the metal cooled, putting it back into the fire, and then hammer again. then it was laying it flat on the anvil and turning it from a thick bar of steel to a flat piece of metal about half an inch thick, which literally just involved smashing it, watching the metal spread. he called it the drawing down, because as you hammered, the metal spread upwards.
I found the hardest part to be shaping the handle, because that was such a delicate process to get the swirls. metal doesn't always do what you want it to do. to make the spiral we did use a vice and just strapped the hot bar into the vice, and grabbed some tongs, and just walked around the vice and twisted the bar. very cool.
these days, metalworking uses a lot of different tools and shaping methods, it was super cool to use techniques that dated back hundreds of years. it was so fun!
Aaron is a professional in his craft, he gets commissioned to do swords and shields for re enactment groups and stuff. he even made a set of wrought iron gates for someone. every hunk of metal in that place had a story, we ended up staying for 4 hours because he was so excited to talk about his stuff. im definitely going back, I want to save up for his sword making experience.

Daring to Dream: A Queer Twist on the American Dream
Since the age of thirteen, I've been captivated by lifestyle blogs and vlogs. There was something undeniably fascinating about peering into the lives of others, a unique opportunity to unveil the human experience. Observing personal narratives—adventures, challenges, victories, and setbacks—stirred a profound fascination within me. However, as much as I cherished these stories, a significant barrier stood between me and the realization of my own aspirations. Nearly all the influencers I followed were straight and cisgendered—two aspects that did not align with my own identity.
Greetings, I'm Jimmie Edwards, a twenty-year-old gay, transgender man embarking on life's journey with limited in-person role models to guide me. Despite this, I'm steadfastly pursuing my dream—a unique, queer-coded version of the quintessential American Dream. Admittedly, the conventional notion of the "American Dream" feels outdated and unattainable, particularly for marginalized communities. Nevertheless, I believe in rewriting this concept, crafting a personalized version that aligns with my own terms and boundaries.
This blog serves as a platform for me to recount my distinctive journey while extending a helping hand to as many fellow queer individuals as possible. Here, you'll find guidance on various aspects, ranging from financial management to navigating relationships in the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, learning essential techniques like shaving facial hair for the first time, and even diving into discussions about the intricacies and complexities of our economy. It's a space where I aim to share experiences and offer support on a wide array of topics relevant to the queer community.
I'm excited about the prospect of collaborating and conducting interviews with fellow LGBTQIA+ individuals who manage blogs or vlogs. I am passionate about listening to and sharing the diverse experiences and life lessons learned by others. It was this very inspiration drawn from the narratives of others that prompted me to start my own blog in the first place. Collaborating with and featuring the stories of other members of the community is something I look forward to with great enthusiasm.
This space is intended for adults and is committed to inclusivity, devoid of hate speech, violence, abuse, bullying, or predatory behavior. It's important to note that due to the nature of the content, if you're under 18, I recommend refraining from following or engaging with this blog, as some topics may not be suitable for a younger audience. In the event this blog gains traction, I plan to launch another blog specifically designed for all ages, ensuring content appropriate for a broader audience.
With all of this being said, I plan to do two blog posts every week, along with one video on my YouTube channel summing up topics previously discussed on this platform. My blog posts will be posted on Monday and Saturday, with a new YouTube video also out every Wednesday. It may not always be as consistent as I would like for it to be, but I am very passionate about this project and I am looking forward to exploring and expanding on it. Until next time, keep living your truth and shining brightly in the spectrum of life. Take care, stay fabulous, and keep spreading love in every hue of the rainbow.

A Scrittorio update!
I know that I'm cutting it short, but I'm very excited for the new issue of Scrittorio. It's meant to come out at the end of this month! Not a lot of time. But, for this issue, I've reached out to several writers from around the online writing community to ask for interviews.
I am VERY pleased to announce that I already have an interview with the wonderful @ettawritesnstudies, which I'm super stoked about because she was on the top of my list when I decided to do interviews <3 Can't wait to share it with everyone!
I'm still waiting for some more writers to respond to my request, but I really hope they do, because they all have a range of writing experience that they can share from, and I myself am excited to learn from them! As you know, Scrittorio is all about the writing craft, so I made a decision for this issue and every issue moving forward that all interviews and other content in the magazine will serve to help writers improve their craft and learn new techniques.
In the meantime, while I try not to overthink the wait, I'm moving my focus to any other article that isn't the censorship/sensitivity article. It's turning into a behemoth that is unnecessarily complicated, especially given that Scrittorio isn't about politics, sociocultural climates, public opinion or any of that kind of thing. So, I'll be refining my focus to the author's words, message, and their purpose. But I need a break from it for now, so I'll be working on the use of AI as a writing tool, or the article on interactive fiction, or even some of the writing worksheets!

HI ! another anon here, unfortunately I saw many (or not many but very vocal) express joy at the possibility of Megumi being completely erased by Sukuna. And I don't know if I'm simply in denial but I refuse to believe that this is the ending that Gege would give his deuteragonist, and leaving pending points like? not even a closure like he has even given to side characters? Megumi is my fav, I know there is a possibility that he dies, but not like this, not now. u still have positivity? :')
HOLA dearest Another Anon,
I mean... what can I say. I was, quite literally, boasting about wanting to see Megumi suffer like the massive idiot that I am. I even busted out with the tacky Mexican telenovela villainess laughter.
Seriously, I am insufferable...
... And then I saw what Gege did... it broke my heart because I wasn’t expecting it to be so damn cruel. Gege. is. a. fucking. sadist. Just you wait you damn cursed cat, I’m coming for you just so that I can ask you how poetic it is to have “Victoria” carved on your forehead. I'll be your Goddess of Victory alright.
That said, I can see why someone would be overjoyed at seeing Sukuna overpower and obliterate Megumi’s consciousness. Either they don’t care about Megumi or they are excited by the implications.
But for us Megumi-lovers... I totally get it. Not only is it hard to ignore that Gege has killed off or “put in the corner” so many important/major characters already, but if “Megumi” is gone and only his body remains with a different consciousness within it... well, even if he looks like it, he’s not really Megumi any longer, is he?
And honestly, this whole experience made me realize that, as much as I love JJK in general, I’m here for Megumi and Megumi’s growth as a character.
Anyways. Yeah. I am cautiously optimistic under the cut for several reasons, but mostly because Gege gives meaning...
I am cautiously optimistic
Cautiously optimistic because as much as my brain can’t help itself, I don’t want to try to predict JJK anymore. I think some of my headcanons have come to pass in a different expression of what I had in mind. But that’s the thing with “Archetypes”, Archetypes are an empty shell until they are given meaning.
So at this point I just want to enjoy what’s left of this roller coaster ride. Read this to mean that I’ll probably won’t be able to help myself and will continue trying to guess how things progress.
JJK is beautifully unpredictable even with all of the foreshadowing that Gege dropped along the way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m also cautiously optimistic because Gege has shown us at least a couple of times that the original body’s consciousness can still awaken and take over.
Tumblr media
Finally, I am cautiously optimistic because the kanji in Megumi’s name can be said to symbolize a light in the darkest of shadows. A blessing in a cursed world.
Tumblr media
After all, does light not shine brightest in the darkness?
I personally HOPE that this poetic justice comes back into play later on. The power of names is a trope after all.
There’s also thoughts that have been shared with me by others...
Like ma 🍒, who keeps reminding me that we don’t know how this is going to play out yet and that there’s details we can keep in mind that might mean that this isn’t the end for Megumi.
I think moving forward you might also start hearing more evidence about why this is just temporary because, as has been largely theorized, Sukuna just needs Megumi’s cursed technique to make him a new body.
Another thing to keep in mind is that...
Gege is good at manipulating emotions
Like... reeeeeal good.
Just look at the current state of the Megumi fandom or how any time Nobara is mentioned the fandom goes into an uproar.
This is a culmination point and it has been beautifully executed in the sense that it’s got you and me and millions of other people lamenting whether this is “it” for Megumi.
So the way events flowed could all very well have been crafted for the sake of emotional impact.
But we simply won’t know for some time.
This is a call to trust the process. We have no choice but to let the cat cook.
If this is, indeed, temporary, then we will get our closure.
If this is “it”, however... well...
I have to say there’s something larger at play here, and that is “the kind of story Gege is writing” and “the kind of writer Gege is”.
So keep in mind that...
Tumblr media
Gege is an existentialist
To your point about how unsatisfying Megumi’s death would feel if this is “it”... yeah. Totally.
So that should tell you that you have to think of Gege as either an existentialist or a nihilist mangaka.
Since I’m not sure whether you understand what these concepts mean, what I’ll say is that life is what you make of it. It’s up to you to decide whether life is inherently meaningless and chaotic, or whether there is meaning and order to the chaos that is life.
An existentialist author is someone who writes about characters navigating the meaninglessness of the chaos that is life, and who seek to give meaning and purpose to said chaos.
On the other end of the spectrum you have nihilism--the belief that life is meaningless.
SO... if Gege was feeling pretty nihilistic on the day he came up with Megumi’s death and the JJK ending, then we can expect that Megumi’s death is indeed anticlimactic like a certain someone’s death...
Tumblr media
Not sure if you read my response to Recurring Anon about JJK’s writing in which I confess that I am not a fan of Chainsaw Man’s brand of existentialism because it feels a bit too much on the “navel gazing” end of the existential spectrum, and anti-climatic to boot because it’s nihilistic at the core.
Similarly, CLAMP’s writing is also existential, anti-climatic, and can err on the nihilist end of the spectrum too. i.e. I understand that the art style and overall lack of screen tones in xxxHolic is meant to reflect and evoke a sense of vacancy and emptiness because that is how the mc experiences the world. Something like that.
Tumblr media
My other beloved existentialist is Shinichiro Watanabe who will shred your heart to bits and pieces with inconclusive but optimistic existential angst.
Tumblr media
Bang. See you space cowboy.
You can watch a Watanabe ending and walk away both heartbroken and inspired. The man is a genius.
I bring up all of these examples because you can more or less organize these authors into neat little boxes.
If I had to compare mangaka, I’d say Fujimoto and CLAMP are nihilists, whereas Gege is more like Watanabe, an existentialist who chooses to give meaning. That’s why Gege’s character’s deaths have always felt very poetic despite how brutal they can be--there’s meaning to them.
Tumblr media
Megumi’s “death” in the larger JJK-scheme of things, with the rather limited information we have right now, feels nihilistic af.
So let’s assume for a minute that he doesn’t come back... like yeah, I’m in denial and cautiously optimistic, but we have to prepare for the worst because Gege is unpredictable af and I wouldn’t put it past him to have killed Megumi because that’s how he rolls. SO...
If Megumi doesn’t come back, what meaning will Gege give to Megumi’s death?
How will the events that follow create meaning around Megumi’s death?
I think what worries me right now is that Megumi has a bit of a nihilistic view of life. And if Gege is the kind of author who lets the characters write themselves because he wants his characters to be true to their nature, then... this death is fitting. It’s just as meaningless as Megumi believes the world to be.
Tumblr media
Makes sense, right?
Honestly, existentialism is hard to explain, so hopefully this makes sense. But right now any mental gymnastics I do to delude myself that Megumi is getting out alive all hinge on Gege being a tortured existentialist who seeks to give meaning.
After all, as a piece of literature, JJK is underscored with a sense of poetic justice that is everything but devoid of meaning.
Tumblr media
So basically yeah... This is the tiny bit of positivity I was able to share with you? :') Hopefully it helps!
idk what kind of ending we’ll get. I am picturing something very meta from Gege but don’t ask me to elaborate. I just feel like something very spiritual and big is coming.
But I do hope we get a Watanabe type ending from Gege...
Because the truth is... I don’t believe in happy endings. I believe in Watanabe endings because Watanabe endings capture the existential dread at the core of life simply moving on, with or without you.
Tumblr media
And if the ending turns out to be super meaningless and nihilistic, know that there’s only 5k miles between Los Angeles and Tokyo and if we start swimming now we might arrive by the time JJK ends.
Tumblr media

I'm following you now (sounds a bit creepy!) Thanks for letting me know what blogs you're running. Sounds like your life is full, and that's good! Getting some years in and finding independence can be both exciting and daunting....I did a few crazy things once I got my own apartment and a job. But that's what life is all about, isn't it---the freedom to make your own decisions. Here's to all your decisions being good ones!
My latest post references my writing project. Try the link sometime and see what it's all about.
Was working with food always something you liked? That's an art form itself!
For sure! I'm definitely excited about what life has to offer. I haven't moved out yet (college is very close to home) so at the moment it's baby steps, but even being able to work and earn money has made a huge difference. I've definitely got a long way to go from here but I'll take the journey one day at a time and see where it gets me. Anyway after I'm done typing up this reply I'll go check out your link for sure.
You're definitely right, I do see food as an art form, and that's part of why I love it so much! I could yap on and on for hours about how interesting the culinary arts are for so many reasons. There is something about the carefully crafted techniques, ingredients, and environment that takes simple sustenance and elevates it to a level of art that can be tasted. As with visual arts, food reflects the culture in which it is created, and everyone has their own unique style, from the babushka or oma whose recipes have been passed down for generations, to the professional chef who has spent decades experimenting and forging innovative dishes with the latest technology. I thought it would be nice to be a part of that; to really understand what it means to cook, not just to copy from a recipe book but also to carve my own path in the culinary world with my own style and gusto. I want to introduce people to new things and really curate that experience—not just with food but also with hospitality. If I can succeed at that I think I will get a lot of fulfillment out of it.

I return, halfway through season 7 and having watched yet another Sidney episode. I was so excited to see him show up in The Billfold Syndrome, even though every appearance is one less I have to look forward to in the future 😅 And admittedly I didn't find the hypnotism to be one of his best ideas, but I mean it worked! And the way he hugged that soldier once he figured out what happened just got me right in the heart, he's just the sweetest man I SWEAR 💕 I also just love his dynamic with both Hawkeye and BJ, he works with them so well and it delights me to no end. In my humble opinion, this show seriously underused Allan Arbus. Also, last time I sent an ask you mentioned you had some favorite episodes in S7 that you wouldn't mention yet, and I now request that you mention them! I like to look out for episodes I know other people enjoy. And I've definitely had some that I've loved--None Like It Hot was just so fun and light! And Point Of View was such an interesting take on the show, it was a fascinating way to mix up the standard episode format and show us something a little different yet still so in tune with the tone of the rest of the show. It also gave me the opportunity to experience BJ and Hawkeye smiling at me in a first person point of view, which, I'm not complaining 😂 Anyway that will conclude my rambling for now, but I also wanted to let you know that it made me very happy to know you enjoy my random appearances into your inbox 💕 I hope you're doing well, and thank you so much for all your contributions to this fandom!
HURRAY, I'm so glad the message was delivered :D And I'm happy to see you back and delighted that you're having such a lovely time.
Augh, The Billfold Syndrome is such an interesting peek into how Sidney's mind is working and how his craft is shifting, advancing, growing through the war. I always find it fun to remember that in the midst of the early '50s when he's operating, there really is a lot of stuff being thrown at the psychiatric wall to see if it sticks or not. Add in the fact that a lot of the more popular or "accepted" treatments involved a lot of violence being done against institutionalized patients without their full consent, and frankly it is remarkable what techniques Sidney works with in comparison. Like the hypnotism is a bit of a question mark in a lot of ways, especially to us modern viewers, but there is such a sense of compassion in him choosing to work with a technique like that and it softens me toward him even more. A surprise to no one, I'm sure.
No one is surprised either to know that Hawkeye, BJ, and Sidney are a HUGE rare ship of mine. I'm also obsessed with their interplay. They're so much fun to consider (especially given BJ who absolutely should've had sessions with Sidney and who never does, whether intentionally or unintentionally, oops who said that).
I really would've loved to see more Allan use also. I adore so many of the episodes he's in—a lot of them are my high high favorites tbh—and I always take some measure of delight in knowing that many people involved in the show clearly knew what a gem they had in him. I think a lot about Alan writing/directing Dear Sigmund and War of Nerves, for example, these episodes that give us interesting peeks into multiple characters but that really had Sidney at the center of them. They wouldn't have flowed so well without Sidney being the linchpin, and Alan clearly knew that as he was constructing them. Good on you, sir. Thank you for shining such a bright light on our special guy.
Oh man, S7, so many bangers (same with S8 and S9, PHEW, you're in a good run of them rn). I'm legit just gonna pull up the episode list here and go through all of the ones in S7 that I enjoy so so much for various reasons (some agonizing). I love Peace on Us, Lil, The Billfold Syndrome, None Like It Hot, Major Ego, Eye for a Tooth, Dear Sis, Hot Lips Is Back In Town, Preventative Medicine, A Night at Rosie's, and The Party. If I can be honest, I enjoy almost all of them to quite a high degree, but those are the ones that if I saw them gifsets or caps of them, I'd probably go !!!!! and be pointing emphatically at the screen. Also just fucking ones like They Call The Wind Korea, B.J. Papa San, C*A*V*E, like, FUCK, it's just a GOOD FUCKING SEASON AAAAAA wow wow wow. Did you know MASH is a good show?
Anyway, this is long enough, so I'll just thank you for being so incredibly sweet ;v; I love this show more than I can put words to and I know there's not a ton I can bring to the fandom besides, like, caps of episodes and my fanfics of many, many unexpected ships—I always wish I could do more—so you saying that really made my morning already. Thanks again!!

Remixing My Language Learning Journey: Crafting a Unique Path Through Japanese Rap
Turning Language Learning into a Personalized Musical Experience
I have so much to write about and I'm really behind but I'm getting back on track. I want to write about my first trip to Japan, some new studying techniques, learning breakthroughs, linguistics research, tasty new Japanese food including more RAMEN…all in due time. First though I want to talk about music.
Music is an excellent tool for language learners to take advantage of because it can provide you with entertaining and compelling input at a high volume. You may have a tv show or movie you like, or even a book or comic, but chances are you won't read that over and over to the same degree that you would listen to one of your favorite songs. So it may be the case that finding music you like in your target language is a big breakthrough, unfortunately however I personally couldn't find anything I liked for a while .
I'm a long time hip-hop fan that was born and raised in the tri-state area on the east coast, near NY. Late 90s and early 00s hip-hop forms the foundation of my music taste, so automatically, even in America I have to do a lot of digging to find the things that I like a lot. I just wasn't very successful in finding Japanese rap that really resonated with my taste. Now obviously there is the vocabulary issue so lyrics mostly won't be able to resonate with me yet, which puts a greater emphasis on beat, melody, and lyrical structuring (vocab will come later with study).
I found some OK songs here and there but for the purpose of language learning you need to like the song a lot, maybe love the song, which will motivate you to listen over and over. A regular level of "just ok" is not enough.
Then one day I got a crazy idea and I started googling. I thought "what if I could just make my own remixes?", what if I could take Japanese vocals and mix them with the kind of production that I prefer? If I could do this I would be able to make all kinds of music custom tailored to my taste that would make me want to listen over and over. Personally I have a mildly musical background and have produced music before but there were some technical hurdles I needed to cross. Thanks to recent advances in audio production tech I was able to find practical methods that allowed even an amateur like myself to operate at SOME level of functional problem solving. I'm not saying I'm churning out the most professionally scrutinized hit records, but I have some, if not rudimentary, ability to realize my ideas.
Since I had that idea, at the time of writing this, I have made close to 50 remixes and am slowly building my catalog. This has been an exciting experience for a few reasons. First I'm getting a chance to engage and learn more about music production (I can speak a lot on this, maybe another post). To add to that, I have learned a lot more about the Japanese rap scene and a lot of the rappers that populate different areas of the country. I started to develop a taste for certain styles and find myself building a much stronger relationship with the artist and music, where before there was nothing. Lastly, and most importantly, the catalog that I am building is highly entertaining to me, I want to listen to it all the time and I am able to get the kind of reps on these songs that are necessary for a language learning scenario. I use YouTube music for music streaming and have a special playlist now just for Japanese rap.

I started putting some of my remixes on YouTube. The song included in this post is featuring a rapper that I really like named Jumadiba, who has a very interesting style that I like to work with.
I think I will do some lyric breakdowns in the future because it is a process to convert these songs into comprehensive input. I basically look up the lyrics and break apart the lines into vocab, that I add to anki and review while listening and practicing. It takes time but so far its the most fun I've had learning new words and I am excited to see where this rabbit hole takes me.

So I got a jewelry crafting kit and found some of my very old supplies from my parents house and just started experimenting. That was about a month ago, and I've been having so much fun since then. I've made so much jewelry, and learned so much. I even opened my own Etsy shop to sell some of the stuff I have made! I'm so excited to start this journey, and to keep at it!
Crafting has become a true passion for me, even more than drawing, in a different sense. Working with my hands and actually making things I can use and wear has reignited a fire, and a desire to learn everything I can about anything that interests me!
I will be posting a lot of the jewelry I have made for Etsy on here, as well as ideas for future projects! I've recently started book binding as well, so I might try to make some journals to sell (tho for now I have to work on my technique). I've also seen tutorials on how to make slime, and when I'm able to I would also like to make my own charms for my jewelry!
Here's to crafting! And if you're interested in checking out what I have so far, my shop is LittleShopofSketch.etsy.com

A little more on your method of spell casting, because I relate to this real hard and I too do the chanting and explainations, they just came kinda naturally. There are other aspects of witchcraft that sort of rely on visualization (or I thought they do? I'm still baby at this) Like spirit work and astral travel, and I guess my question is are there any such things you can think of that you have a different-but-functional method for that youd be willing to elaborate on?
And that I’m still experimenting with and practicing and figuring out what works for me actually! In almost ten years, I have never astral traveled on purpose or without assistance from an entity or in one case a very strange friend. But here I am now, with a goddess demanding I figure out travel cuz I’ve got Shit To Do I guess, feeling like a novice again.
I started with a renewed attempt at meditation and visualization. All I got was insomnia and anxiety. So I moved onto trance for the first time. I’ve found more success with trance through repetition than just breathing exercises and the like. My method is staring into my obsidian mirror while petting my rabbit pelt and repeating Freyja’s name or a mantra. Got some clear messages that way and I’m dying to try it again.
I think that spiritwork “requires” visualization because it actually requires we silence the brain chatter and open up completely to the messages, and visualization and meditation are the easiest (Im using that word loosely because I don’t mean to say it’s easy) and thus most popular or just easiest to cover in mass produced Witchcraft101 style books. I never once saw trance techniques covered until I started researching shamanism. The amount of information being published is lacking, not our skills in spiritwork.
Also, maybe, most of the more known authors do not have ADHD. They haven’t had to figure out ways around it. So, maybe that’s our job? Maybe it’s time we start talking about neurodivergence in witchcraft and how it effects our practices and the ways we work with it. Crafting is all about innovation, isn’t it? What makes The Craft™️ any different? I’m rambling now, but I’m really into innovating spiritual practices yo. And I refuse to believe my AHDH will prevent me from doing what I’m being asked to do. There has to be other ways, and I feel like I’m coming up on them for my own practice.
This feels like a very long nonanswer, like I’m talking in circles around just admitting I don’t have a good answer. But I refuse to feel ashamed, I’m actually really excited. Because I feel like this is the perfect opportunity to open the table up and learn new shit.
ADHD spiritworkers, I’d love to start a diologue about this stuff! Feel free to chime in. We’re out here. I know it. Let’s chat!

4 Reasons Why I'm Excited for Food Wars!: Third Plate
Food Wars! is an anime that took the world by storm. Or at least, it took me by storm. For the uninitiated, it follows the quest of Soma to become the top chef in his new cooking school. After growing up battling with his father to create the best-tasting food in their diner, he goes to school to level up and gain cooking skills to help him in his quest to beat his father. One day. Along the way, he sets the school aflame by declaring that he'll beat any person who stands in his way in a food battle and proves it by challenging people to battles almost too much.
The premise isn't exactly unique, but what the show does with all of the elements is truly something special. It takes several facets of anime that I deeply love, and at least one big element of anime that I'm DEEPLY conflicted by, combining them together in a way that's not only palatable, but also funny, relatable, and drool-worthy. Add on a fast-paced plot, well-researched recipes, and a great character, and you're in business. Are you INTRIGUED yet? Let me explain further why I am so excited for this new season...
  #1- RAMPANT FANSERVICE
Ok, so here's the thing. I'm not a huge fan of fan service. I know, I KNOW. This is a very debatable topic. I get it. I understand. Let me explain before you decide to lambast me in the comments below. First, let me say that almost everyone, to some extent, likes fan service. You probably like some kind of fan service. Heck, that might be why you watch anime at all. I'm not saying that I don't like any fanservice at all, I just don't like all kinds of fan service.
So, you might be asking, what's so great about the rampant fanservice in Food Wars!, especially if you don't like fanservice in the first place? Well, as I said, I do like some fan service- I like fan service that serves a purpose in furthering the plot or giving insight to characterization. At first, it doesn't seem like the fanservice in Food Wars! would do this. The artist portrays the characters in some incredibly suggestive ways. Seriously, clothes explode off. At some point or another, you'll see almost every character naked. And WHY???!?! Why does this show sexualize just about every walking, talking human being at some point or another? Purely to accentuate how MIND-BLOWINGLY, CLOTHES-EXPLODINGLY delicious (or horrible....peanut butter squid, I'm looking at you...) is.
This show is brilliant because it carefully uses fan service, something that is hugely popular with many people, and something that motivates a lot of people to watch anime, to further the overall aim of the show: displaying just how amazing the food is. By doing this, it makes the food the star of each fan service instance. Why are people getting hot and bothered? The food. What does that tell the viewer? That this food is EFFING GOOD. It contributes to characterization by showing the viewer how each student, judge, or random passerby reacts to each person's cooking. It furthers the plot by making the food the main star and letting the character's reactions to the food guide the choices they make in how they want to grow and diversify their cooking skills. Honestly, it's such a clever use of fan service, that I can't get mad at it. With this new season, I look forward to seeing more naked people lavishing their love and attention towards some gorgeously hand-crafted meals. Speaking of the hand-crafted meals...
  #2- OTHERWORLDLY FOOD PORN
The food in this show looks so good. Do you know something amazing? The phrase "fan service" isn't technically limited to showing off some skin. Fanservice can apply to anything placed in an anime of manga meant to appeal to the fans- sports anime, for example, is a form of sports fan service. Your Lie In April is a great example of an anime geared towards classical music fan service. So, does that mean that appearances of food in anime can also be considered fanservice??? YES, 100%, and Food Wars! more than delivers.
First, the art is absolutely gorgeous, depicting food in a way that is honestly impossible in real life. Seriously, I've tried to get food to look exactly the way it does in anime. Heck, I've made a profession of it, and I can tell you first hand that it is not an easy feat at all. Artists have the luxury of choosing the exact colors they want to use, of selecting the perfect lighting in which they want to showcase their food. They can draw on perfect grill marks, and render the most delectable crunchy panko coating.
Second, the treatment of the food by the characters absolutely glorifies it. I've already discussed how the characters literally lose clothing over their appreciation of the food, but they way they verbalize those thoughts heightens the viewer's own understanding of what makes the food so delicious. Not only does it look good, but the running commentary from the character adds dimension- it tells the viewer what is good about it, what flavor elements are working together, what sensations and flavors they are getting hit with. This makes the appreciation of the food porn immersive. Not only do the viewers have something to look at, they have some context with which to appreciate it. As a result, the startling depictions of the food, coupled with the commentary makes the experience of watching and appreciating the anime more than two dimensional.
Amazingly, the food porn doesn't distract from the plot, in fact, it sort of is the plot...
#3- CAPTIVATING PLOT
Ok, I know I love food maybe more than the average person, so if food isn't your thing, I promise there's more to enjoy about this show. The plot is fast-paced and always moving, which I think is a must-have for most anime episodes. To me, the sign of a good first episode is one that quickly establishes the plot, moves forward into introducing a conflict or challenge, and leaves the viewer wanting more.
Even just by looking at the first episode of the new season, The Third Plate, all the marks were hit. They quickly moved through exposition, skipping over introductions of new characters to focus on the important introductions- that of the main opponents of the season. It quickly set up the main conflict of this season, within the first five minutes, in fact. The episode built on that conflict and left us with a hype-train cliffhanger. Soma comes up with a daring and bold solution to the challenge his new rival has set before him.... and the episode ends there, leaving us longing for more- more information, more insight, and importantly, more food.
The best part is that the hype train keeps rolling throughout each of the episodes. At least, in the previous two seasons, this is definitely the case. Soma moves from one challenge to the next at a breakneck pace, with support from his friends along the way adding comedic relief and help to facilitate his character growth. There's never a wasted moment, no filler episodes- each episode has a purpose, but is at the same time enjoyable and fulfilling. We, as the viewers, never groan over a recap episode or sigh over a wasted moment. We know that Soma is on a mission- to beat everyone else and be the best chef in the school- and it feels as though every moment is somehow dedicated to supporting that dream- whether it's as a comedic interlude or through a friendship affirming helping hand, or as a straight-up food war. And, you know, those food wars...
#4- SMART FOOD RESEARCH
From a food blogger perspective, and someone who has recreated multiple recipes from this show... I can say with absolute certainty that the people who work on this series did some serious research into food. Funnily enough, I didn't think about this too much until I was talking to someone who came to my last panel at Crunchyroll Expo. I had been talking about how clearly the food from this show had been well researched, and tested, and put to trial before even putting it into the manga, and the fan stayed behind to express his thanks to me for complimenting the cooking in the show. Apparently, all the food that shows up in Food Wars! is actually tested by an actual Japanese chef (Yuki Morisaki), and the recipes that appear in certain recipes are tested in real life before they get put into the manga. You know, that makes complete sense to me.
It's hard to draw and animate gorgeous looking food without having a reference photo to rely on. Surely they had to get that from somewhere. More than that, though, the way the ingredients and cooking are described in the anime are so specific and pertinent to each recipe, it's clear that a lot of effort was put into knowing what should actually go in the recipe. It's really nice, and refreshing, to see care and dedication go into the star of the show -the food- and to see that the creators actually care about being as realistic as possible, considering it's an anime...
From personal experience, I wish the recipes were provided with each dish, but what's really fun about recreating the food is being able to experiment, do your own research as to what should be in the food and what possible techniques were used in the cooking. I've tried multiple times to debunk the recipes and prove that they couldn't possibly have been made in the time frame of the show, but actually I'm surprised to say that most foods that appear in the food wars, despite how complex they look, can actually be recreated in the appropriate amount of time as long as you have your prep work completed. Except for Takumi's semi-freddo from season two. Seriously, that dish...
In any case, from a food lover's point of view, this anime is a dream come true. The food looks good. The characters are dedicated to making the best of the best when it comes to eating. The hype is there. Best of all, it's obtainable in real life, if you want to put the effort into making your own versions of the food.
And so, all these things combined- great fan service, good food porn, fast-paced plot, and realistic food- make for a food lover's dream of an anime. And, to be honest, who doesn't love food? So check out Food Wars! The Third Plate, simulcasting every Tuesday at 9:30 am, PDT. I promise you won't be disappointed.
