You know something I don't think I've ever seen people talk about is how Freddie changed the lyrics for Big Spender.
Because in case you don't know, all original versions of the song are sung by women - and it is made very clear that they are singing to men:
The minute you walked in the joint
I could see you were a man of distinction
A real big spender
[....]
So let me get right to the point:
I don't pop my cork for every man I see
Hey, big spender
Spend a little time with me
Probably not too surprising, then, that when Queen performed this song in 1974 Freddie had to do a bit of a gender-switch on it:
Though, it would probably be more accurate to say that Freddie made this song gender-neutral because he didn't change it to be about a woman. He eliminated the first use of "man" entirely and then sang "I don't pop my cork for everyone I see" (instead of "every man").
And honestly there's probably a whole dissertation you could write just about those changes alone, but what I really love is when Queen brought the song back in 1986 and Freddie changed the lyrics again:
Because yes he still dropped the first "man" but the "everyone" is changed and Freddie instead sang "every guy" with just the barest hint of a "-rl" sound at the end to give him plausible deniability if anyone asked about it.
So much of Freddie's music speaks to his experiences as a queer man but, because of the nature of the times in which he lived, he couldn't always be directly open about that fact. Most of his love songs are intentionally vague, and he sang about "somebody" or "you" to avoid having to use gendered terms as much as possible.
Freddie singing "I don't pop my cork for every GUYrl I see" wasn't just an adjustment to the original lyrics, it was a specific change from how Freddie had sang it before in order to make it more gay in a way that he could rarely be with his own music, and that is what I adore about this. It's such a little thing, but it gives such a unique insight into how Freddie balanced his sexuality and his stardom, and how the relationship between those two changed over the nearly 12 years between these performances.

A collection of q!Phil quotes from the final rejection
Phil: Forever, I can't.
Forever: Why?
Phil: I can't- Because you love me for my looks only! I look like your ex!
--
Phil: I'm sorry, Forever. It was never going to happen.
--
Phil: You know I can't go like, be with you, you know I can't because you don't love me for me.
--
Phil: Remember when you just kept trying to gaslight me into thinking that I was Brunim? It's not fucking real, that's not- that's not how fucking things go, dude.
--
Forever: I'm trying my best to be happy with you, Philza.
Phil: Okay well, it goes both ways. I'm not happy with you when you just fucking think I'm your ex.
--
Phil: Why does he keep fucking, like, doing this to himself?
Forever: It's love, Philza. You will not understand it.
Phil: No, I understand it. This is obsession, there's a difference.
--
Forever: Man, please. You reject me already. Why are you doing this?
Phil: 'Cause you just tried to fucking die! I care about you but I don't care about you like that.
--
Phil: You have to accept it. That people can be nice and not be attracted or like, in love with you. Alright? There's not like, one extreme or the other.
--
Phil: As long as you understand. As long as you understand that I can't- I can never accept your love.

hey, just hoping to get some people to read + reblog this post if possible, as it concerns something extremely important and personal for me. if you have a moment to share this post and hopefully get it in front of people who can help some of my loved ones find stability again, please consider doing so.
my qpp and best friend in the world and his husband have been going through some of the most traumatic losses of their lives over the past few years. right now they're homeless, have no income, and need funds to afford clothes, medication, food for them and their pets, and repair the computer they were using to do commission work. since I've been unemployed for months I haven't been able to help all, and it's breaking my heart. I've included links to their GoFundMe, which they're using to try and rebuild after their house was destroyed, and their amazon wish list, which they're hoping will be a way to recoup some of their lost belongings. at least give some thought to reblogging this so as many people as possible have a chance to try and help out. at this point I don't know if there's anything else I can do beyond that until I'm back on my own feet, and they need some really immediate help.
their GFM page
their wishlist
thank you for reading this.

what do u think Farah, Kate, Valeria’s types are, like personality wise or physically? love ur stuff so much, there isn’t enough stuff for the cod women and it is the worse💋
Hey there! I don't think they have a type per se, to them it's more important to have a good connection with someone! So I only wrote about what I think they'd like their partner to be! I didn't write about any physical appearances, though, since I think that sort of thing doesn't matter at all! The chemistry is important to them more so than anything else!
Valeria’s, Farah’s and Laswell’s type
Valeria: She’d likely be into someone who knows what they want from the get go, who can get aggressive at times but knows when to be quiet as well. Someone intelligent, who knows not to mess with her and her business too much, willing to let a lot of morally interesting things slide. Someone who can be loud at the right time, who isn’t afraid to stand up for themselves. However, I think she’d also be into someone independent. She doesn’t have a lot of time for a relationship, always out and about somewhere, so she’d want someone who can take care of themself. Someone who knows how to do house chores is also a big plus. You don’t have to worry about her doing nothing, if she wants to she can hire a maid or something, but it’s sort of domestic to her to have a partner who knows how to cook and use a vacuum cleaner. That way she won’t have to worry too much about coming home to a messy home. Her ideal partner would be up for going out with her from time to time, and wouldn't be shy in front of other people either. Someone motivated would be nice as well. Just someone willing to do things with and for her. But the most important part would be loyalty. Someone who knows that what she does is wrong, but stays with her despite it. Valeria can’t allow someone to work against her, not even someone she loves.
Farah: She’d probably like someone chipper. She’s surrounded by war and death at all times, so having someone cheerful with her, who can lift her spirits when she’s feeling down, would be ideal to her. Besides, she loves the domestic parts of life as much as the next person, so she wouldn’t mind settling down somewhere with someone, but she also wants to be with someone willing to go out with her to maybe explore the surroundings a bit. Doesn’t have to be a lot either, just watching the sunset while going on a walk with her would suffice for her. Her ideal partner would be open for most things, from cultures to just some outings. And although it’s only a small part of her, she secretly does wish for someone who’s not straight. That way she can share her experiences with someone else and not feel as alone. Someone who can show her something new almost every day would also be appreciated. Farah is a very loyal person, so she’d love for her partner to be the same. Communication is key, so someone willing to talk to her if something bothers them, regardless of what it may be, would also be nice. It would also be nice if that person could stay calm during most parts of their life and not lose hope immediately, someone who trusts that Farah will come home safe and sound to them and not freak out about every small thing.
Laswell: I think she’d be into someone calm. Someone a bit older, maybe even a few years older than her, who has seen the finer things life has to offer and who can appreciate them. Nothing would faze them and they would never raise their voice. Someone, who doesn’t need to see the world anymore, who has seen most of it. Someone stable and content. While Laswell could take care of someone, she doesn’t want someone reliant on her since she’s abroad more often than not and doesn’t have the time for someone like that always. While it would be nice if that person could speak up for themself, she doesn’t mind having to speak on their behalf from time to time. That person doesn’t have to be the next Einstein, but she’d love someone she can have sophisticated conversations with over a glass of wine. Someone willing to drink some wine with her in general would be nice. Laswell is too old to want very many complications, so she too would appreciate someone willing to say what bothers them so they can work it out together. Not everything needs to be perfect, but she’d prefer it if she could talk it out with them. Although she can splurge a little bit here and there, it’s important to her that her partner is responsible with money and doesn’t buy everything that comes to mind. She wants them to be well off, and that is, mostly, only possible if you know how to save money. She thinks butches are hot, but she’s not opposed to a cute femme either.

I knew I remembered this being a thing. I just scoured through a pile of ancient emails to find it. 2018.
It's an election year. Again. At least one of the accounts they terminated back then was a "liberal American" connnnnstantly posting shit about how it was Time For Voters To Burn It All Down or just not show up to vote. I very vividly remember one of the accounts they got rid of at this time being one that had some post about how nobody cares about your student loan debt so therefore either don't vote, vote for someone who mathematically cannot win, or vote for a barely-veiled Russian asset out of spite, because that'll teach them, that I saw reblogged on my dash multiple times.
Which, I'm not saying student debt relief SHOULDN'T matter. It does, and it HAS, and it will. I can't say I've especially even LIKED *anyone* who's run for higher offices in maybe my entire adult LIFE.
A lot of attention rightly gets paid to Russia fucking with right-wingers in the USA. But they are very much ALSO willing to pretend to give a shit about nearly any cause or concern you have (uh, except a few, sorry Ukraine). The point is destabilization. And so far we've done...a really good job of playing right into it.

“Kingdom Hearts being an epic slow burn gay romance would be incredibly impactful to people both personally and as a landmark in queer representation by extremely popular and established characters. It has decades of legitimate buildup and has the potential to be both incredibly validating to queer fans everywhere and even possibly sway the minds of those who love the characters but may not have much contact or knowledge of queerness.”
and
“The Kingdom Hearts series is honestly kind of unique in its unabashed emotional sincerity. How it treats friendships and non-romantic bonds as being both extremely important and powerful, never giving the impression that friendship is lesser to romance, is depressingly still somewhat of a rarity in media. This is very important and validating to many, particularly aromantics but also most everyone who is just Tired of how friendships and romance are often presented in tiers of importance.”
are concepts that can and should co-exist.
