formerly an essay in tags but - billie lurk. half-nameless, misremembered woman. her powers derived from the things taken from her, without any catharsis or empowerment. the rat charm, tied with deidre's hair, her lover's voice in the mouth of rats. her arm and eye, taken, given back only to cause her chronic pain, then lost again. foresight seems a cruel gift for a woman who botched the timing of her takeover of the whalers, and bet wrong when it came to delilah.
she never bore the outsider's blessing; his first visit to her was more like an assault. every other dishonored POV character gets the choice to be selfish, and for that selfishness to mean something, but billie's actions have no effect on the world at large, either, in a game without a chaos system.
some say that corvo is the ghost, but he can reach out and change things. billie's buried herself twice and come back and nothing she does seems to matter - she is less a protagonist, more a convenient full stop in the narrative.
try this: open doto, start a new game. sit in her cabin. notice how little of billie there is. even the woman she loved more than anyone has the face of another named character.
she sits amongst the assets of other games: empty canvases and a dressmaker's mannequin that wears nothing.
#billie lurk#even the wiki is wrong about her its infuriating#pulled this out of tags because fuck it#in daud's DLCs even the stories that weren't about him were about him#but billie's stories are the scrapheap. they're the stuff they couldn't squeeze in elsewhere. cheap jokes and macguffins#i'm not even roasting the devs for this i think releasing dishonored in 2016 then DotO in 2017 was a feat (derogatory)#games should be made slowly and with love#and i know that everyones talked about this endlessly#but billie is my fav and it sucks that she got a game that only causes me to grieve for her as a character#not FOR her as a person#only the potential story that never was. that she never got.#you can have your strong black woman and not turn her into a trope. give her depth and range and heartache and agency. yes there was traged#but how did it SHAPE her?#dont get me started on her being designated caretaker of a former god and dying assassin. what the fuck#some of this i'd be more okay with if she was younger - i mean. the blank canvases? really?#this game could have been about wyman and there's not that much that would have changed in terms of the core story#“found out the asshole that killed your mother is still around. gonna go deal with that.”#emily who is stoned: “cool.bring me snacks on the way back”#wyman: “oh he's saying actually it was gods fault and that its possible to kill him. well i have literally nothing in my schedule”#billie's not surprised by anything anymore but maybe wyman would freak out over most of it. could have been a lot of fun#also you cant fuck up wymans characterisation. they barely exist.#local empress sends her enby girlboyfriend to kill god#pres writes increasingly deranged essays in the tags#death of the outsider spoilers#i have to complain about doto once every year or so or i die#but i'm not really gonna let arkane hide behind dev excuses when it comes to racism like. its not enough

The more I think about it the more annoyed I am by the amount of Deadwoman Sadmen in Fallout 4. Like @the head writer WHO THE FUCK HURT YOU???? @Todd Howard WHY did you approve SO many of the EXACT SAME character backstory for MULTIPLE characters in ONE GAME??
You know what? I WOULD rather a bitter divorced MacCready who nontheless is looking for a cure for his son because that's still his kid! I'd rather Kellog's wife?/gf? LEFT him because he was a piece of shit merc! Must it have been a wife dying for Deacon to feel bad and change his ways? why not some random community member or or a friend something? Time and time again this series uses women as plot devices rather than as characters and fallout 4 is the worst offender. Not only is it misogyny and showing a severe lack of anyone but the most generic cis white men they could pull off the street to sit in the writer's room but it's So. Lazy. Every. Time!!!!
Sexism aside are they not embarassed with their lack of imagination and hack storytelling?

A very bad Singin' in the Rain ripoff AU inspired by me trying to figure out what codenames production would use to refer to Jatherid post-show in the Bachelorette AU:
Miss Katherine Plumber, former Vaudeville performer, gave up the song-and-dance routine that she used to do with her childhood best friend Jack Kelly in favor of becoming a silent film star. She kind of stumbled into it, but now she and Oscar Delancey are the hottest commodity in the film world--people go wild for Plumber and Delancey films. It's unusual for the time, but Katherine does most of the talking for the two of them during public appearances. Why? Well, Oscar never learned how to talk without an overwhelming New Jersey accent, and he also has a fun tendency to be incredibly rude to...well, everyone.
Jack has stayed by her side through all this, though he ended up transitioning into set and costume design rather than trying to make it as an actor. The public would be scandalized by their friendship, except they don't know much about it, because the Vaudeville performances ended a while ago and Jack has mostly stayed behind the scenes and let his art speak for itself. He'd like to be famous one day, of course, but he'd also like to not have his every move scrutinized. And anyway, everyone assumes Katherine and Oscar are secretly dating, and Jack and Katherine are just friends, so he doesn't need to appear with her in public.
Katherine's life is turned upside down when she accidentally jumps into David Jacobs' car while trying to escape some sleazebag on the street. She and David argue the whole time she's in his car, but David eventually drops Katherine off at the party she's supposed to attend and they both think that'll be the end of it.
It's not.
It turns out David was hired to perform in an incredibly goofy dance number at the party that Katherine, Jack, and Oscar are at, and one thing leads to another and David throws a piece of cake at Jack that ends up hitting Oscar instead before he flees the party, and suddenly both Katherine and Jack are very intrigued by this man.
Katherine spends the next few weeks trying to find David to at the very least thank him for hitting Oscar in the face. Jack is left feeling a bit slighted; they've been a team for so long that he's not sure what to do with the fact that she's seriously interested in David the mysterious cake-thrower. But then Katherine finds David, and as he starts spending more time with her and Jack, Jack starts to realize a few things:
He's getting tired of staying semi-hidden for the sake of propriety, partially because he wants to do more as an artist, but also because...
He couldn't tell you when it started, but his feelings for Katherine drifted into not-quite-platonic at some point, and he doesn't know how to deal with that.
He's not just jealous of David for the fact that Katherine's interested in him--he's also jealous of Katherine, which might be the bigger problem.
This new "talkie" starring Katherine and Oscar is going to be an absolute disaster if someone doesn't do something about Oscar.
Shenanigans ensue, and they definitely all kiss in the rain after the "Good Morning" scene

( A starter for @mx-von-rosewald !)
Thursday doesn't know how she got here, but she knows she needs to get away.
There's a part of her that almost doesn't want to, which is strange when you consider the fact that she's someone else's daily sustenance. Every day they are there, consuming her - not metaphorically. Literally. By taking bites out of her. Eating her, because they need her flesh to live. And while of course it's terribly painful and painfully terrible to Thursday, there's also a part of her that can't help but feel sorry for whoever this is that feels the need to do this, hence the hesitation.
There's also the possessiveness they have displayed over her, the downright territorial aggression over her as if she's a piece of kill they're protecting. It makes sense. A predator would want to protect its food source, wouldn't it? And that's what she is, isn't she? A food source?
Regardless of all that, she doesn't want to be one anymore. It's difficult verging on impossible for her to understand, much less put into words, but she has a visceral urge to get away, hence why she is hesitating at the mouth of the little cave she and they have been sequestered away at for... who the hell knows how long. Thursday has no idea. She's always been here as far as she knows.
She takes a step out and the sound of her foot treading on the myriad dead leaves makes so much noise it startles her and she immediately falls back. This is a bad idea. What if they come back? What if they come back right at this instant and see her stand there? She'll be punished. They'll be angry. Angry that she tried to flee. And that'll probably make them chew on her some more. Not that they won't anyway, but maybe they'll be more aggressive about it. They can be surprisingly gentle at times, when they want to be, but if she's pissed them off...?
She's still hurting and sporting raw open wounds from being chomped on last night, even though they're already starting to heal. Soon the holes in her thigh will be closed up and gone like they never were, but that doesn't stop them from causing her pain now. She'll never make it like this. And just where does she think she'll run to anyway? What makes her think there's anyone else like her out there? It's just her and them. The rest are wild animals.
But... they didn't come back. They went out last night after dinner and didn't come back, and that's highly unusual. What if something happened to them? They could be hurt or dead, right? Surely now is her best time to run.
Fuck it.
Thursday runs.
She runs bolts as best as she can in her injured state, half-dressed, no shoes, long brown hair all scraggly and tangled, eyeglasses long since cracked and smudged but at least she can still somewhat see through them - for some reason she needs them to see, otherwise the world looks like a swirl of shit. She wants to call out for help, but why? To whom? What if they hear her? No, she should be quiet and just run. As far as she can from there. She'll sort out the rest later, just as long as she gets away.
And she does get away. She's very surprised when she does. She knows she has when she sees other people, although she doesn't run to them. No. She stops running, and just stares at them, as if she doesn't understand what she's seeing. She must be a sight to see, like she's some wild animal herself.
Once she realizes she's been seen, she starts running away again, because what if they're like them?

Review - The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Big spoilers ahead!
Unlike my Normal People review, which I wrote a few weeks after I'd actually finished reading it, this review is nice and fresh as I finished the book about four minutes ago. I'm choosing to do my review by book, rather than the whole series, for four reasons.
I like doing reviews fresh. It helps to convey the actual thoughts I had when finishing/reading the book. Also, I have a lot to say (whoops!).
Unfortunately, I watched the movies before I read the book(s) and I have a sneaking feeling that I will not like the later books as much.
I have a hard time distinguishing between books in a series after I've read them. All the events kind of blur together. Not super helpful as reviews go.
I'm trying to keep my activity streak going. Consistency is my weakness and I have a tendency to disappear from Tumblr for months at a time. Here's to holding ourselves to stuff! (Hopefully) This is also a good way to force myself to read more.
My first concrete thought is that my heart is breaking at the end scene. The way that Peeta was so oblivious to Katniss playing it up for camera and all. Poor guy had no idea. Also, how can anyone ship Katniss and Gale? I don't mean that in a rude way, it's just kind of baffling after the amount of times Katniss said her feelings for him weren't romantic.
I thought the movies were relatively loyal to the books. Several scenes and plot lines were near exact and that's hard to do! I appreciate it, especially the details (i.e. Katniss holding the red rose as they ride in on the chariots). I do feel like they took a lot of emotion out of it, particularly Katniss. She seems a little lifeless and numb to everything in the movies, which I'd assumed was kind of just her default for going through a traumatic event like that, but after reading the books she is much livelier. Her narration, emotions, and feelings as everything is going on really sold me for how much I enjoyed the book. However, I respect the choices of the people involved in the filmmaking (because they are, in fact, good films) and perhaps that is a stylistic choice.
Katniss' narration, emotions, and reactions were all (for me) spot on. I felt like she was a real person who was aware of herself and developed over the course of the book due to the things that she was going through. Her narration was personal without sounding monologue-y, and I really enjoyed reading it. I always feel the need to acknowledge when the general feel of the writing or narration is well done because that can kill a book and make it unbearable or a chore to read.
I love the characters. They're well thought out, three dimensional, and the way that Katniss views and interacts with them is very realistic. In my mind this particularly applies to the stylist assistants, Haymitch, and Peeta. Katniss tries so hard not to judge the stylists, even though they are the very embodiment of what she dislikes about the games (i.e. their frilliness and comments, especially right after she's won). Because it's not really their fault, and she knows that they're people. She is very humane and empathetic which I think I see in myself. It's nice to see it reflected, especially in a main character. Especially in a main character who is seen as ruthless or lethal or dangerous. Her violence has motivation and she does all of the things, including killings, for real reasons. That's such an important, unique, significant thing about this book for me. Fantasy and dystopia often try to make strong (cough female cough) main characters who are badass and assassins and whatever (which is cool!! I love badass women!! I'm making a different point here), but their motivations are often lacking or cold or vague. They kill a hundred men for revenge over their slain little sister, but there is no connection to their little sister. They don't think about their little sister apart from "REVENGE!". We don't see a bond between them. I don't know, Katniss is just real and how she experiences and feels things is too. Woah! Bit of a detour we took there. Let's get back on track. Haymitch is probably someone who has been discussed a thousand times (pure vibe speculation). It's interesting to see him go from a drunk, no care, jerk to someone Katniss relies on and cares for. (cough three dimensional cough) It's also cool to see Katniss realize that and realize that the reason he's an alcoholic is due to what the Capital has put him through. Peeta. Oh, Peeta. The way Katniss views Peeta is kind of funny. She talks about how hard he is to predict, how mysterious, how strategic, when he's just a teenage boy in love. She's always trying to figure out his secret, ulterior motives and it's just that he likes her.
I have a lot of thoughts but I think many of them are ranging into hard to put into words and mostly just general feelings territory which is never nice to try and explain. Plus, I've talked a lot already. I realize, editing this, that these aren't really "reviews" so much as a dumping of my major thoughts and feelings. Maybe I should rename the series. Thoughts?
I would recommend reading this book! (You probably have already)
See you for Catching Fire :,)

Sometimes I think about how one of my Duman drawings got added to someone's fetish filled favorites on DeviantArt, where they had a thing for bare (sometimes filled) male upper bodies?? So naturally I'm never drawing a bare chested man again ig- Jk a singular note on this and I'll do it again

i am also a crochet fiend and i would love to know your process for lizzie and joel! no worries if not. i hope pearl and oli are going well!
HEHEHE HIII WELCOME TO THE CLUB!!! :D
I actually did make a post about the process!! It's so chaotic and I'm so sorry for that ahsdkjfas but it's here! It didn't show up on my blog at first when I was digging for it, but it does exist haha
And, shameless self plug, these are the dolls in question <3
(I also made a pattern for the axolotls too, and it's still pretty scuffed but hey it's something lol)
BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS- I actually wrote down my entire pattern for Pearl!! She's been done since literally July, but I never posted her because I was planning on making a Tilly to go with her but the one I made was actually atrocious so I was gonna redo her but I waited too long and then forgot about it for four months 😭
Hoping to do a nice photoshoot for her sometime soon, then she'll be posted with her pattern/process too!
(I was on vacation when I finished Joel and Lizzie so we took fancy pictures at some fancy gardens, but I don't actually live in a place with nice foliage-)
And Oli I actually started last week!! Just a basic sketch over a picture of the base doll pattern I use (important part of my process^tm) but hopefully I'll start actually crocheting him soon! He'll get a proper pattern too, don't worry, I'm learning <3
But yeah! Sorry to use your ask as a crochet project update ahsdjkfsa- but progress is actually happening!!!! I'm so excited :D

terfs when a study shows literally anything positive about trans people/transitioning: 'hm i think this requires some fact-checking. Were those researchers REALLY unbiased? Because if they were biased this doesn't count and if they weren't knowingly biased they probably were unconsciously biased, woke media affects so much these days. Have there been any other studies on this? Because if there haven't been this could be an outlier and if there have been and they all agree that's a bit odd, why aren't there any outliers, and if there have been and any disagree we really won't know the truth until we very thoroughly analyze them all, will we? Were there enough subjects for a good sample size? Did every single subject involved stay involved through the whole study because if they didn't we should be sure nothing shady was going on resulting in people dropping out. Are we 110% sure all the subjects were fully honest and at no point were embarrassed or afraid to admit they didn't love transitioning to the people in charge of their transition? Are we 110% sure none of the subjects were manipulated into thinking they were happy with their transition? In fact we should double-check what they think with their parents, because if the subjects and their parents disagree it's probably because they've been manipulated but their cis parents have not and are very unbiased. How many autistic subjects were there because if there weren't enough then this doesn't really study the overlap between autistic and trans and if there were too many then we just don't know enough about what causes that overlap to be sure this study really explains being trans and isn't just about being autistic. How many AFAB subjects were there because if there weren't enough this is just another example of prioritizing AMAB people and ignoring the different struggles of girls and women and if there were too many how do we know sexism didn't affect the results. Was the study double-blinded? We all know double-blinded is the most reliable so if this one wasn't that's a point against it even if the thesis literally physically could not be double-blinded. Look i'm not being transphobic, i want what's best for trans people! Really! But as a person who is not trans and therefore objective in a way they cannot possibly be, i just think we should only take into account Good Science here. You want to be following science and not being manipulated or experimented upon by something unscientific, right?'
terfs when they see a study of 45 subjects so old it predates modern criteria for gender dysphoria and basically uses 'idk her parents think she's too butch', run by a guy who practiced conversion therapy, 'confirmed' by a guy who treated the significant portion of subjects who didn't follow up as all desisting, definitely in the category of 'physically cannot double-blind this', completely contradicted by multiple other studies done on actual transgender subjects, but can be kinda cited as evidence against transitioning if you ignore everything else about it: 'oOOH SEE THIS IS WHAT WE'RE TALKIN BOUT. SCIENCE. Just good ol' unbiased thorough analysis. I see absolutely no reason to dig any deeper on this and if you think it's wrong you're the one being unscientific. It's really a shame you've been so thoroughly brainwashed by the trans agenda and can't even accept science when you see it. Maybe now that someone has finally uncovered this long-lost study from 1985, we can make some actual progress on the whole trans problem.'
#science#transphobia#cass review#less 'cass review' generally more 'zucker specifically' because this same problem exists outside cass#have lost count of the number of times i've seen 'well THAT study may have said most trans kids persist but it MUST be wrong'#'there's another study says the exact opposite. that one's right. obviously.'#but cass is why i'm annoyed by it now#normally i don't have a problem with critical observations and questions. yeah check your science! that's good!#there have been some bullshit studies and some bullshit interpretations of good studies! scientific literacy is important!#and normally also am willing to pretend the people pulling reaction 1 on some studies and reaction 2 on others are. not the same group.#but now there's a ton of cass supporters tryna say 'oh the cass review didn't reject or downplay anything for being pro-trans!'#'some studies just weren't given much weight for being poor evidence! not our fault those were all studies with results trans people like!'#…….………….aight explain why zucker's findings are used for the 'percentage of trans kids who don't stay trans' stat instead of anyone else's.#would've been more scientifically accurate to say 'yeah we just don't know.'#'studies have been done but none of them fit our crack criteria sooooo *shrug*'#like COME ON at least PRETEND you're genuinely checking scientific correctness and not looking for excuses to weed out undesirable results#am also mad about zucker in particular because his is possibly the most famous bullshit study#quite bluntly if you're doing trans research and think 'yeah this one seems reasonable' you. are maybe not well-informed enough for the job#there's just no way you genuinely look at the research with an eye toward accurate science regardless of personal bias#and walk away thinking 'hm that zucker fellow seems reasonable. competent scientists will respect that citation.'#that's one or two steps above doing a review of vaccine science and seriously citing wakefield's mmr-causes-autism study#it doesn't matter what the rest of your review says people are gonna have OPINIONS on that bit#and outside anti-vaxxers most of those opinions will be 'are you actually the most qualified for this because ummmm.'#people who agree with everything else will still think someone more competent could've done a much better job#people who disagree with everything else will point to that as proof you don't know shit and why should we listen to you#anyway i'd love a hugeass trans science review with actual fucking standards hmu if you know of one cause this ain't it#……does tumblr still put a limit on how many tags you can include guess me and my tag essay are about to find out.

I mean there’s nothing in canon that disproves that the Core is super goofy. so why not
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...
In Amphibia episode "the Beginning of the End" Darcy captures Anne and others and intends to "do what [Andrias] could not: kill Anne." This is easily the scariest Darcymoment to me, because of the ease of which Darcy does that and because Darcy makes this face:
Tumblr media
This is not a Marcy expression. This is about as far from Marcy as you could possibly get. Marcy would never make this expression in this context. Why?
Well, know that Darcy has all of Marcy's memories. Marcy has known Anne since they were toddlers, and they hung out after school every day. She probably knew Anne's favorite foods and Anne's favorite color. They probably watched movies together, huddled under a blanket with moonlight streaming in from the window. Do you know what it takes to know all of that and still wear this expression? You'd have to be a special kind of fucked up to do that, and I don't believe that Marcy is that fucked up.
So. This image would singlehandedly convince me that Darcy really, really, isn't Marcy, and isn't influenced by Marcy in this way at least. Because if Marcy had any amount of say in this - the Core wouldn't be able to kill Anne. At least not with this expression.
Sidenote I actually kinda like that Marcy is completely powerless in controlling Darcy's actions. It makes her slapping away Aldrich's hand all the more meaningful because Aldrich takes away everything afterwards, leaves her in a dark room with nothing, just herself, some lonely little girl in her school uniform and not Marcy the chief ranger of the Newtopian Knight Guard. And she still rejects him.
Anyway. Where does Darcy's quirkyness come from? Well, Darcy says it might've "inherited some of [Marcy's] quirks" but it clearly doesn't get influenced that much from Marcy (see the above). From what I can identify "inherited some of her quirks" might mean that ol' Darce here enjoys Marcy's favorite foods more and falls over a bunch. I can't say anything conclusive on like, personality changes because the Core doesn't have a canon personality that isn't Darcy to compare and contrast to, which is honestly such a shame.
But. There is one thing the Core does when it has yet to become Aldrich-as-the-Core or Darcy-as-the-Core. And that is this:
Tumblr media
It gets really close to people just to mess with their heads. This is a consistent character trait displayed both as the Core and as Darcy. This does imply that it has a consistent personality.
Tumblr media
Besides, the Core literally named itself “Dark Marcy” because “the name appeals to us,” implying that that thing is canon goofy I refuse to believe otherwise!!
EDIT: Also the Core's first reaction to meeting Marcy is to demand Andrias kill her. Immediately. It's first reactions as Darcy to meeting Anne is to 1. mock her, 2. declare the rebellion over, 3. fecking kill her!? That's a very short path to killing, displayed both as the Core and as Darcy. Darcy is extremely hardcore and has no chill dot png.
Again, the Core doesn't have much of a personality, so I'm afraid the analysis has to end here. Sorry guys.
also this consistent character trait

Do you think the Demon Bull Family will enter the plot again? I think a lot of parallels between MK and Red Son have come around this season and it'd be interesting to explore
Oh please share your Red Son and MK related thoughts with me! I'm not quite sure what you're talking about specifically, but of course the DBK - Wukong / Red Son - MK parallel is always fun.
I don't think the Demon Bull Family will ever be shoved out of the plot entirely, at the VERY least we'll get something like how they were integrated in s4, but with Wukong, Macaque, and DBK all being previous members of the brotherhood I hope we get to explore their relationship a bit more!
I hold onto my crumbs, and so I remember Wukong's little "I've honestly missed that guy" from Revenge of the Spider Queen, and maybe deep down I want that to be explored. It seems like we're going to get into why Wukong stayed up on flower fruit mountain for all that time, and part of that might involve why he sealed DBK away/his feelings on that whole situation. And honestly if DBK is involved, then Red Son is involved. Red Son's admiration for his father is very similar to the admiration MK has for Monkey King, so maybe there's something to be explored there!

[[ Starter for @needlenxggin !]]
Okay, that was definitely a first in all her times of travelling through space.
Starfire had been flying like normal, using her communicator to make sure she stayed on course while making her way back to Tamaran. Then, suddenly, she was completely thrown off course, as if an insanely strong gust of 'wind' would have hit her. She could only assume it must have been a ship passing too fast for her to even see, or perhaps even an actual attack aimed for her for some reason; but right in this moment, she couldn't really assume or think much. She completely lost control of her flight through this force pushing her, getting flung around hard enough to just spin and fall along with the force, and she could sense that she was entering an atmosphere at some point. Until the crash, she still was unable to do anything or stop herself. Needless to say that she left a huge dent in the ground, though thanks to the tamaranean sturdiness, at least she wasn't knocked out or any badly wounded.
Tumblr media
Groaning as she got herself back up, the first thing that Starfire realized was that her communicator, which she had held in hand as whatever this was happened, did not survive the forces and all that she was holding anymore was a shattered piece of technology. Tucking it away, she lifted herself up further to now stand again, and then looked around. Starfire definitely didn't recognize the planet, but the more important part was that she was stared at. No wonder by that entrance she must have made. "I... I greet you. I do not mean harm," Starfire spoke, repeating as she was going through the languages she knew, like any tamaranean usually did when making contact with someone they didn't know what language they would speak.
