Since I love Pokemon and I’ve recently become obsessed with The Owl House, so I decided to give everyone a team. This is part 1/2.
I decided that each track specializes in a specific Pokemon type, although they may have different Pokemon as well.
Luz- Absol, Riolu, Shinx, Sliggoo, Sylveon, Torchic
I gave Luz a variety of different types. Her main partners are her Riolu and her Syvleon. However, her Absol is actually her mom’s and was given to her right before she was supposed to leave for summer camp.
Amity- Confagrigus, Muk, Ponyta, Salazzle, Toxel, Weezing
Since Amity is on the Abomination track, I’ve given her mostly poison type Pokemon. She has a Confagrigus, which reminds me of the Abomination coming out of the pot. Her main Pokemon is her Salazzle, but her newly hatched Toxel does require a lot of attention. I think the idea of Amity being not all bad and her love for Azura gave me the idea to give her a Galarian Ponyta. Not to say poison types are bad, but they do have a bad reputation on the same level as dark types. It doesn’t hurt that she keeps comparing Luz to a fairy type, which are as rare on the Isles as humans; Galarian Ponyta looks like a fairy-type cotton candy fluff ball even though it’s a pure psychic type.
Eda- Decidueye, Hoothoot, Houndour, Kecleon, Spiritomb, Thievul
Eda was a fun character to pick Pokemon for. I wanted her to have different types, just like her wild magic. And, obviously, I had to include Hooty and King as well. Eda’s Hoothoot would be Hooty and, unfortunately, he swallowed an Everstone so he’ll never evolve. King is a Houndour who loved Luz and Eda and is very protective of them. Her main Pokemon is her Decidueye, Owlbert, is the most loyal and will barely leave Eda’s side, even letting her fly on his back. I also gave Eda a Kecleon, known as the shop Pokemon in the Mystery Dungeon games.
Willow- Breloom, Cherrim, Chikorita, Foongus, Skiploom, Tangrowth
As a witch on the Plant track, I gave Willow the obvious choice of grass type Pokemon. She’s got a range of Pokemon, with the addition of poison, fighting, and flying as secondary typings. Her main Pokemon are her Tangrowth and her Breloom, but she’s taken on a Chikorita that was hanging around the Plant track greenhouse. I love the idea of Willow having a fighting type as one of her mains because she may look sweet, but she’s one tough cookie.
Gus- Chimecho, Espeon, Inkay, Slowpoke, Swoobat, Zorua
Since Gus in on the Illusion track, I decided to give him mostly psychic type Pokemon. I couldn’t decide if that type would be better for Illusions or for the Oracle track. But, fuck it, both tracks get psychic Pokemon. Gus’ main Pokemon is his Zorua. His Zorua may not be evolved or his strongest, but he loved the idea of Zorua’s illusions and that’s what made him follow the Illusions track.

Pokemon Journeys Episode 48. Let’s review:
1. I’m honestly confused on why Ash and Goh didn’t bring Dragonite and Greedent with them to Unova. Greedent was the mon responsible for getting them the all-you-can-eat pass and while Dragonite lost, they still helped out as much as they could, so where’s the credit?
2. That Pretty-Much Pikachu / Hikachu mech was Tails Doll level creepy in its inactive state. Eugh. And the fact that it can behave pretty sentiently when active honestly does not help matters.
3. This is an issue for the entire episode, but why is Cinderace trying so hard to be friends with Lucario? While it’s appreciated that he’s actually trying to bond with a Pokemon that isn’t smaller than two feet, with how much he’s putting into in making friends with Lucario, it just seems..... forced in order to establish the comedic theme for this episode. It especially doesn’t help that this is actually the first time Lucario and Cinderace have interacted in a non-battle manner, which makes this whole plot point come out of nowhere.
If they’re trying to establish the two as future rivals, then that shouldn’t work either because of their trainer’s different goals and the fact that if Cinderace ever tried to take on Lucario in a no-holds-barred battle with their trainers without any plot-induced stupidity, Cinderace would get absolutely bodied. Lucario has already done so much more impressive things than Cinderace, that in a fighting sense, it wouldn’t be a contest. Not to mention, Goh’s goal is about catching while Ash’s is about battling, but why set this up if Goh and his Pokemon are somehow just as strong as Ash? It doesn’t make sense and, like I said in an anon ask, it ruins the power balance of the show.
4. And here’s a problem I have specifically for Lucario: Why is he now suddenly acting like he’s too good for anything? Now only is this hinted in the new opening where Dragonite basically has to force him to appear on-screen, but in the episode proper, when Ash offers him a snack, he just coldly stares off. Ummm, why? He has no qualms following Ash’s directions in battle, they never had a previous spate to warrant this behavior from Lucario, Lucario showed no hesitation to cheer with his friends after defeating Eternatus, and he was completely loyal to Ash as a Riolu both inside and OUTSIDE of battles to the point he was basically a 2nd Pikachu.
If they’re trying to make him a stern and stoic type, that would be cliche because we’ve already had those Lucarios with Sir Aaron, Maylene, Ryley, and Korrina in the past. It wouldn’t be original or anything, it would be completely boring. Heck, as much as it pains me to say this, freaking CAMERON’s Lucario had more personality than this! Plus, the anime has established that baby Pokemon usually take more of their trainers after hatching, and since Lucario showcased more of that as a Riolu, it honestly feels like his character is taking a step back in development, it especially doesn’t help that we JUST had the whole “stoic-guy develops more” stuff with Raboot. Writers, DON’T reuse past elements. Try new things!
5. While the snacks Ash and Goh get do look good, it honestly would’ve been cooler if they got snacks pertaining more to the signature of Iris and Cilan as a little callback to the Best Wishes series, like maybe an Axew Chocolate figure or a Mint Pansage treat. The anime did one with Dawn and Brock with the Piplup and Croagunk episode, so why not here?
6. Also Goh only prefers plain vanilla and that’s just too relatable to me cause I love vanilla.
7. Another issue with the overall episode, but Unova just seems so dead. There are no additional people or Pokemon at the park nor at the city. This is a problem because, not only is it important to keep your worlds alive, but this is UNOVA we’re talking about, and it doesn’t help that the episode takes place in the Pokemon World equivalent of New York City.
8. And now Lucario hates getting his fur dirty? When and why??? He had no issue going his fur scorched a billion times over with Eternatus and Mewtwo and this is also a repeat of Lycanroc’s whole thing with getting messy. While I doubt this will become a big development thing that Lycanroc had, it’s just disappointing they’re reusing past gags for Pokemon instead of trying new ones.
9. Apparently Cinderace’s time as a Raboot never made it learn the value of personal space.
10. ANOTHER overall issue with the episode is how choppy the animation is. There are just some parts that look very poorly put together. Examples being Lucario and Cinderace flying around the city and Team Rocket blasting off. It literally just looks like a bunch of different frames grouped together without proper transitioning. C’mon animators, you’re better than that! Literally almost every battle scene we’ve received from this season alone so far is proof of that.
11. I do love the canine-esque sounds Lucario makes throughout the episode, something I don’t believe other Lucarios have done.
12. I really wish episodes like this where it’s the Pokemon with the most focus had either subtitles (like in OG’s Island of Giant Pokemone) or the narrator translating for them (like SM’s Pikachu’s Exciting Adventure). It would be a good way to know their characters more and help build connections. Heck, not even Meowth bothered to translate for TR when Lucario and Cinderace started arguing. Missed opportunity right there.
13. The gag where TR, Lucario, and Cinderace started swinging around the city right behind Ash, Pikachu, and Goh lasted WAY too long.
14. Nice touch of TR’s rental Pokemon of the day being Sawk and Throh.
15. Wait, so it was Cinderace, the lesser experienced of the two who’s owned by the catcher, who thought of the idea of using their glued-together palms to their advantage? Not Lucario, the one who’s been through more battles and owned by the battler? What the what?
16. Defeated by two mons who were on a basic handicap and didn’t had their trainers on their side. Further proof of how absolute jokes Team Rocket are.
17. I’ve said this for past regions, but plump Ash can either be really blessed or really cursed.
18. Hahaha Lucario got dirty again and he’s chasing Cinderace now. Can I please be done with this review now? I can? Cool.
Overall.... yeah this episode wasn’t good imo. Weird animation, forced and/or inconsistent character moments, an environment close to dead, and unfunny gags that lasted longer than they should have. Hecks, not ever TR made me laugh in this episode. I’m seriously hoping they aren’t trying to establish some kind of “ace rivalry” between Lucario and Cinderace. I’ve already discussed this issues and problems with that, so I’m not gonna repeat myself.
Sorry fellow fans, but I gotta score this episode a 3/10 for all the reasons above.
Looks like next episode will introduce us to Chloe’s leaked Eevee, so here’s hoping we can get some character development! Please please PLEASE some character development!!

Rachael’s favorite Pokemon + Pokemon related things!
In preparation for Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, I figured I’d post a list of my favorite Pokemon, games & characters!
Blue or Red versions: Blue, Silver, Sapphire, Leaf Green, Diamond, Soul Silver, Black, Black 2, X, Alpha Sapphire, and Moon. I didn’t realize how consistent I was until just a couple or years ago lol
Favorite Main Game: Part of me is tempted to say Silver or Soul Silver, since it was not just my first Pokemon game, but my first game period (Mom bought me Silver & a GBA for Christmas and took me out to eat at Wendys. I can still pick out the booth we were sitting in. I got stuck in the bedroom bc we both thought the stairs were a bookshelf lol). It still holds a very special place in my heart but Black is the BEST. Pokemon has yet to outdo itself.
Favorite Side Game: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon- Explorers of Sky! (SERIOUSLY GUYS THIS IS MY FAVORITE POKEMON GAME OUT OF ALL OF THEM EVERYONE SHOULD PLAY IT AAAAAAAAAA)
Favorite Generation: GEN 5 GUYS. GEN 5. Sinnoh is another one that means a lot to me bc Diamond was the first Pokemon game I ever beat (Way back in 2007!) but I LOVE GEN 5 SO MUCH.
Favorite song: Temporal Tower, Temporal Spire & the final boss theme for PMD:EoS! Though if I had to pick a top 5 from the main series, I guess;
1- Red/Lance
2- Zinnia
3- N’s Castle
4- Ghetsis (Black/White version)
5- Team Galactic Grunt (The Smash version especially)
Favorite Villainous Team: PLAZMAAAAAA!!!!! (tho. Galactic has a way better battle theme. The Brawl remix is still my jam all these years later- and part of the reason I love Lucario so much! Oh man, that intro in Subspace Emissary!)
Favorite Character: I bow before my Lord and Savior, N. I mean there’s a BUNCH I like (Silver, Green/Blue/Gary, Steven, Looker, Cheren, Guzma, Lillie, Gladion, AND ZINNIA, ESPECIALLY ZINNIA, are all great too! I love them all!) But N is like, an all-time fave for me outside of the Pokemon series too.
Favorite Anime-Only Character: Sir Aaron form Lucario & the Mystery of Mew! (I love Lucario. I love the Lucario man.)
Favorite Player Character: Hilda from Black/White! Out of all the main series games, it feels like she has the most personality, and I like her design the best. Though if we’re including side games, the avatar from any of the PMD games is a better character... by virtue of having any character at all. (I like the female avatar in Conquest a lot as well! Not a lot of personality, but she’s really cute!)
Favorite Gen 1 Pokemon: Lapras
Favorite Gen 2 Pokemon: Lugia
Favorite Gen  3 Pokemon: Absol
Favorite Gen 4 Pokemon: Lucario
Favorite Gen 5 Pokemon: Zoroark (tho Hydreigon is such a close second.)
Favorite Gen 6 Pokemon : Xerneas
Favorite Gen 7 Pokemon: Silvally
Favorite Starter: Typhlosion (I didn't really love them until I played Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, but now they’re my go-to starter! Fun fact: I much prefer Quilava to either of it’s other evolutions. By like, a lot.)
And my favorite water & grass starters are Samurott and Decidueye~
Favorite Eeveelution: Umbreon! It’s a real shame it’s stats are so mediocre bc I love it lots
Favorite Legend: Lugia! (Tho Lunala and Dialga are really close. Dialga due to Diamond the Dialga being the first mascot legend I ever caught back in 2007 and Lunala bc Nebby is amazing and I love them.)
Favorite Mythical Pokemon: Jirachi (I remember watching Wish Maker back when it first came out and loving it except that Absol needed way more screen time. I never got quite as attached to Jirachi as I did Lugia from 2000 but they’re still my favorite mythical Pokemon by quite a bit)
Favorite Ultra Beast: Pheromosa (Why can’t I get one at a low enough level to use on my team during a playthrough rip)
Favorite Mega: MEGA ABSOL YO. (It made one of my old favorites actually viable to play AND IT’S SO GORGEOUS OH MY ARCEUS)
Favorite form variation: Alolan Ninetails/Vulpix!!! (I’ve loved Ninetails since Gen 1 but it just isn’t that useful of a Pokemon in game play normally. It’s still not the best BUT IT HAS THE BEST DESIGN SO I BRED ONE AND USED IT ON MY TEAM IN MOON FIGHT ME AND MY PRETTY FOX)
Favorite Pokemon Overall: Lucario!!!!! Ok, story time:
(under a cut bc it got a bit long)
It was 2010. I was a lonely, home schooled 13 year old, an only child with only one parent, and said parent owned and was the head chef in a struggling restaurant. I had exactly one friend- my best friend had moved away a short while ago and my home school group, including the teacher, absolutely hated me because I didn’t go to their church. Said singular friend is special needs and hadn’t been allowed to spend the day at a friend’s house without her parents ever.
Oh, and we had dial-up internet. The restaurant’s back room was close enough to someone with wifi down the block that I could watch Youtube during business hours, but none of my game systems could pick it up.
Life kinda sucked hard. But that’s not my point. BUT IT DID IT SUCKED SO BAD
Mom had helped me dig out my old Nintendo 64, so I had that, my Gamecube, Youtube, and my DS to entertain me for about 5 years. One day I’d decided to look up Smash videos- and there was a sequel! It had Princess Zelda from my favorite game, Ocarina of Time in it! So I bought Melee, and then I bought Twilight Princess when I found out that was a thing, and then my mom’s childhood friend took pity on me & bought me a Wii (I’m p sure I cried trying to thank him) and then I got Brawl!
So it’s 2010, and I go into brawl completely blind- the only characters I know are the Zelda ones, Pokemon Trainer/Pikachu, & the Mario characters from Mario 64. I start playing Subspace Emissary and even though I don’t know most of the characters it is awesome. So I get to the Ice type level- I know the Ice Climbers from Melee & Meta Knight from the old Kirby anime, and this awesome jackal ninja character shows up and oh my god it’s so cool!!!
And then the Pokemon music starts playing.
I think I screamed. I hadn’t evolved my Riolu that Riley gave me in Diamond, and it had been long enough since I’d beaten Cynthia that I’d forgotten Lucario existed. There has never been another Pokemon that I’ve seen in my entire life that made me go “WOW!!!” half as much as Lucario.
And that’s how Lucario got to be my favorite Pokemon~

Welcome to the world of Pokemon, Caroline! You have been accepted for the role of Tabby Fagin. To get started, please consult the new trainer checklist.
OOC INFORMATION
NAME: Caroline, Caro
AGE: 28
TIMEZONE: EST
PRONOUNS: She/her
PRIOR EXPERIENCE: I’ve been roleplaying for about five years now. You can find a list of my accounts here.
OTHER: Nope!
CHARACTER INFORMATION
CHARACTER: Tabby Fagin
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS CHARACTER?: As someone who both loves dogs and likes them better than people, I relate to Tabby a lot. And while I think she already has a lot of solid character growth, I think her position in life where her family gave up everything to help animals in need kind of makes her a bit harsh on the rest of the world. I think it’ll be really interesting to see how she ends up opening up to people and whether or not she makes mistakes when it comes to who she can trust when she’s so naturally skeptical of literally everyone.
CHARACTER BIOGRAPHY: Nope, I wrote it so I’m pretty cool with it.
POKEMON
HAVE YOU BEEN EXPOSED TO POKEMON PREVIOUSLY?: I used to watch the anime on WB Kids every Saturday morning until Misty and Brock left and broke my heart. At one point I tried to watch the Black & White anime, but I couldn’t get over how they pronounced Unova and had to stop. I’ve also played almost every game ever, but I only got to Hoenn recently. Somehow I managed to miss two whole generations of Hoenn games, but I got Alpha Sapphire a few months ago and finished it.
WHAT BABY POKEMON WOULD YOUR CHARACTER BE MOST INTERESTED IN HAVING?: Riolu, hands down. It’s a perfect intersection of Tabby’s interest in dark-colored and doglike Pokemon. A lot of the baby types are very cutesy and pink which just doesn’t fit her aesthetic. I think she’d also be interested in having a Fighting-type since most of the Pokemon she covets are Dark-type and it’d be good to cover more of her bases.
WHAT EEVEELUTION WOULD YOUR CHARACTER MOST LIKE TO HAVE?: I think Tabby would hands down be happiest with the idea of having an Umbreon. I think not only does it go with her whole facade of darkness and tough-looking Pokemon but leveling up via friendship would appeal to her. I also think she would never, ever want a Sylveon given the creepy skin bows.
WHAT LEGENDARY OR EVENT POKEMON WOULD YOUR CHARACTER MOST LIKE TO HAVE?: This is going to sound really depressing, but I think Tabby would most want a Celebi. I think the idea of having a Pokemon that could wander across time would appeal to her because some childish part of her would think it could go back and keep anything from happening to her mother.
IN CHARACTER QUESTIONS
In lieu of a writing sample, please answer the following questions in your character’s voice so we can get a sense of their characterization.
1. Do you believe that people are simply good or evil?
I don’t think people are evil in the way that our justice system portrays them to be. I don’t know why we care so much who is or isn’t smoking pot when there’s far worse things out there happening that we don’t try to stop. I do think there are shades of bad in this world that are unredeemable, shades of violence and abuse in particular. But by and large I’d say the largest evil currently facing our society is apathy. People claim to care so much about things, but not enough to leave the house once a year to vote or to even fill out a census. I think so many people in life just accept their circumstances and grind their life out in quiet depression and I’ve just never really understood that. And then there’s the rich. There’s people in this world that have more power than any president or prime minister because they have so much money they don’t need. And there’s no excuse for that level of greed and neglect towards other’s pain and suffering. Honestly, if you have enough money to put a dent in world hunger, or the housing crisis, or even some poor kid’s cancer bills, and you don’t - well, you’re the fucking devil.
2. If you could travel to any other region in the Pokemon world, where would you go and why?
I’d like to see Alola. My parents went there on their honeymoon and there are a bunch of pictures of them out by the sea with drinks in their hand, my dad said they carved their initials out on a tree somewhere and I’d like to find it - if they haven’t turned it into a parking lot by now. And I’d also really love to get my hands on a Rockruff, they’ve just always looked so cute when I see them on TV. We’ve never gotten on in the shelter though, so I’ve never gotten to up close and personal with one.
3. What Pokemon type do you believe best represents your personality and why?
I’d be a Dark-type. The analogy works in the fact that like 99% of my clothing is black, but I’m not really going on aesthetic. I just think Dark- and Ghost-type Pokemon get a bad rep because people see them as remnants of a bad situation, as shadowy vestiges of something that came before. And I guess maybe it’s that my dad could have looked at me the same way but he didn’t, he found the light in the situation and used it to his advantage. And I’m really no real stranger to the shadows either, I liked hanging out in the sewers back in Castelia City. It was down there that I first started battling and figuring out how much of a rush it gave me and then I’ve always been good at finding hiding places when I’m running around playing Robin Hood in the streets. I’m not really afraid of the same things other people are, any creatures lurking in the shadows should be afraid of me.
4. You have chosen to leave home to raise Pokemon on the road, braving rain, cold, and heat. What do you think you can gain from being on the road that you couldn’t get from staying in your hometown?
I’m used to being cold or damp, I literally lived on a houseboat. I don’t know, a lot of days I feel pretty sad about having left home if I think about it too much. I miss my dogs and my bed and just the general atmosphere of the city, none of the towns in Kanto really compare. The cities they do have are so bright and fun, I miss people wearing neutral colors and not smiling at you when you get on the train uptown. But I left because I needed to try my hand as an actual trainer, not just take down some weird doctors in the sewers. I guess as much as I pride myself on independence and not needing people, maybe being with my dad all the time kind of enabled me to just live his life and not have to figure out too much about what I wanted to do with mine.
5. Professor Oak can never remember his grandson’s name, signifying a possible larger issue with their relationship. How would you describe your relationship with your own family?
I really only have my dad. There’s like a smattering of aunts who used to babysit me when I was younger, but they all disappeared when our bank account did - so I wouldn’t call them family. I think my dad is the best person in the entire world. There are a lot of people that wouldn’t be able to even handle raising a kid by themselves - let alone one like me. I can be difficult, I definitely realize that. I like to do things my own way and I don’t like people trying to help me or telling me what to do. But my dad just has the most patience of anyone I’ve ever met and has the biggest heart in the world. It gets him into trouble sometimes but I wouldn’t trade him for anyone. He’s my rock.

Why a Rivalry Between Lucario and Cinderace WOULD NOT Work
Tumblr media
So with the latest episode of Pokemon Journeys yesterday, we got a brand new opening animation as well. As per usual anipoke trends, the opening showcased many potential events that we could expect in the near future, like Iris and Gary returning, the gang traveling with Leon, and... Lucario and Cinderace forming some sort of rivalry.
Before we go on, I would just like to point out that not everything we see in anipoke openings should be taken seriously, as there’s been plenty of times an opening animation has showcased a certain event that never came to be, such as Ash catching a Grubbin in one of the Sun and Moon openings. And now using the previous Journeys opening as an example, that one teased events like Riolu and Farfetch’d training with each other alone and Ash and Goh having a full-out battle. Did either of those two came to be? Nope! So with that said, it is possible the same deal will done with this particular event.
However, because of much focus was placed on this upcoming rivalry, as well as taking episode 48 into consideration, it is actually very likely the writers are egging in giving us a Lucario-Cinderace rivalry, despite evidence pointing out how much of a bad idea it will be. And how are the reasons why:
Reason #1: It Would Be Forced
Ever since Lucario hatched as a Riolu, the two have barely, if ever, interacted with each other. For the most point, they mostly just shared comedic group moments (with Pikachu and Sobble, mind you). Have they ever trained with each other? Nope. Showcased any negative and/or competitive emotion? Not even in the slightest. In fact, the first time they ever had a meaningful interaction was in episode 45 where they both evolved, but really the only thing did with each other was fist bump, and then help take down Eternatus with Pikachu and the legendary doggos, so there really isn’t much we can take from there.
The same can be said for episode 46 where they both worked together to fight Mewtwo. They just cooperated with each other without any sort of meaningful interaction with each other.
And then we got episode 48. I’ve already talked about on how and why their whole thing between each other was forced, but in order to break it down for the sake of this blog post, the mostly just got into a bunch of silly shenanigans caused by their own simple mistakes. Y’know, just like Team Rocket with each other and sometimes Ash and his own traveling companions. Did any of them formed some sort of rivalry because of their silly mistakes? No. Then there’s nothing else we can take from this episode as well.
With all that said, Lucario and Cinderace forming a rivalry would just come on out to be extremely given their lack of interaction. And the crazy part is that’s not even scratching the surface, given reason #2.
Reason #2: They Have No Reason To Form a Rivalry
Rivalries shared between Pokemon is an uncommon thing. While they’re never usually given much emphasis compared to trainer rivalries, there’s usually some reason on why they are formed in the first place.
One of the most iconic examples I can think of would be the one between Ash’s Greninja and Sawyer’s Sceptile. In its younger stages, Scepy kept losing to frog boi, despite the two having very similar fighting styles and both gaining super forms later on in their lives. They also both deliberately shared a love for battling and their trainers both aimed for the same goal: conquering the Kalos League, so a rivalry between them was due to come. We also had Ash’s Lycanroc and Incineroar wanting to match and surpass their teachers in Sun and Moon (Gladion’s Lycanroc and Kukui’s Incineroar respectively).
Now looking at Lucario and Cinderace, what reason would they have to form a rivalry? Become the strongest? Then shouldn’t they focus on battling Pikachu or Dragonite then? It’s not like their trainers share the same goal or anything. Ash wants to fight ‘em all while Goh wants to catch ‘em all. Hecks, this point kind of brings up the next reason why a rivalry between these two would be stupid, which is...
Reason #3: Power Balance
It shouldn’t be a secret to anyone that Lucario would absolutely body Cinderace in a one-on-one serious match with their trainers. For one, ever since he was a little baby Riolu, Lucario has always been training. He’s helped his trainer defeat strong opponents to help raise his ranking and heckles, if you look up his battle record, you can find that Lucario is Ash’s second most used Pokemon in Journeys so far.
On the other hand, Cinderace, while he has a bit more experience than the standard Goh-captured mon, still pales in comparison to Lucario’s resume. He hardly ever trains, in fact, he mostly just helps Goh in catching and studying mons, but that’s not enough. And while it’s true Cinderace has been depicted to be on equal footing with Lucario in their fights against Eternatus and Mewtwo, please take in note that they were not fighting each other and both legendaries were capable of bodying the both of them because, well, they’re legendaries.
So there’s really no reason to think they’re equal when Lucario has clearly done more battling than Cinderace. And if you want to bring up that Cinderace has the type advantage, please take in mind who is Lucario’s trainer. Ash flippin’ Ketchum. Y’know, the same guy who has defeated Blaine’s Rhydon with Pikachu, Gary’s Blastoise with Charizard, Clark’s Quilava and Charizard with Grovyle and Glalie, Cilan’s Pansage with Oshawott, and Sawyer’s Sceptile with Greninja. It’s at this point where type advantages literally mean nothing to him. And if you want to bring up instances like Juan’s Luvdisc beating Grovyle or Alain’s Charizard beating Greninja, then let me tell you this: Compare Goh’s skill and experience to the likes of Alain, Juan, etc. and see where that argument takes you now.
I think it’s safe to say that in an actual battle, Cinderace would be screwed. Not only is Lucario a more adept battler, but he has a trainer (who’s basically Goh’s own mentor, mind you) who can completely wipe the floor with Cinderace’s. If you really think about, Ash’s strategic mind could help Lucario pull off crazy stuff like reflecting Cinderace’s Pyro Ball back with the force of his physical moves or just go all Naruto on it with Double Team. Ash has conquered the Orange and Alola leagues and the Kanto Battle Frontier, so imaging Goh having that level of skill would just be laughable considering we’re only halfway to 100 episodes in Journeys.
Final Points
Overall, a rivalry between these two would be stupid because they barely interact, their goals are different, and Lucario has Ash for his trainer. Additionally, I just want to ask this: Why? Why would they need to form a rivalry?
Doesn’t Lucario already have one with Bea’s Grapploct, a Pokemon owned by a trainer with the same goal as his own? That’s honestly much more interesting. And what about Farfetch’d? The two are currently Ash’s only fighting types on his team and Farfetch’d’s debut appearance established that they are about on equal skill and share a love for battling. Shouldn’t the two form a rivalry as well? You could even put in Farfetch’d’s own development, making him jealous that someone younger than him has evolved first, and thus, could now be stronger, motivating him to push himself to evolve as well so he can be back on equal footing. You could also give Lucario a student-teacher thing with Korrina’s Lucario, just like Lycanroc and Incineroar, but let’s not get too redundant considering Lucario has already copied Lycanroc’s hatred for getting dirty.
And if you want to give Cinderace some sort of rival, might I suggest to you Sobble? Just think about it. Out of all of Goh’s large arsenal of mons, these two are his most prominent. Maybe whenever Sobble evolves, he could pick up on Cinderace’s Raboot phase, and that could make Cinderace look back on how moody he was and try to help Drizzle/Inteleon move on from that, albeit, getting into some conflict as well. But those are just my ideas.
And that’s all I have to say over this topic. As you may have figured at this point, I don’t want a rivalry like this be formed due to the reasons given, but it’s likely inevitable at this point, so I’ll certainly review the heck out of it whenever it comes. Thanks for reading and don’t forget to follow if you haven’t already!
