Not the spiderverse art book restarting the dying down Hobie age discourse. Wang’s boarding school story at the end of Ep5 deserves an award. The way he conveys those lines…the building rage, the tears in his eyes, the contemplation of everything he felt back then…it’s delivered with just the right amount of nuance.

I still find it incredible how few scenes this episode had. And I admire that the show isn’t doing flashbacks to convey them either, which would’ve been the safer choice. Not only does the dialogue invest us in the characters’ reactions and expressions, it also puts a certain trust in both the writing itself and the audience. We have to visualize this history for ourselves. We are put in both In and Wang’s place as they listen to each other. Their growing bond is organic because we’ve seen every moment of it. And I love that the show isn’t afraid to take this route, when I’m certain that many other shows would fail abysmally if they relied on such simplicity.

It takes really stellar writing and acting to make something so simple feel so complex.
