The Harrington Pattern Part 2
A longer chapter today because it didn't want to end. It's Steve finishing all the costumes.

Part 1
****
Steve worked on Max’s costume first. Like Robin’s Max was going to be a pirate. He had the names of a couple of lady pirates in his back pocket for them to pull out if they ran across assholes at the Fair.
Because Max was underaged he set out to find a less form fitting costume then Robin’s.
He found a large men’s black shirt and pants and tailored the waist to fit Max’s slender form. Paired with the boots and the hippie vest he dyed red, she looked bitchin’.
Then he focused on Lucas’s costume in secret. Every time someone came by, Steve would hide it out of sight. He didn’t want anyone to see it before it done.
Whenever anyone would ask about it he would pull out the tunic that he had been working on for his costume.
It was blue and white in a checkerboard pattern. Blue on the right of the top portion and then on the left on the bottom portion.
The pants that he was using for Lucas’s costume were similar to Steve’s for his.
Not loose like Max’s, but not tight like Robin’s. He knows it’s technically inaccurate, but he wants to be comfortable and he’s not about to make a poor little sophomore to-be uncomfortable either.
He finishes it with a week to spare and then picks up the other outfits from the moms.
He throws a party and has them all make their own weapons for their costumes.
Lucas is the only one that didn’t join in.
Steve put his arm around Lucas. “So why aren’t you in there making something, too?”
Dustin is making a spear, Max is making a cutlass, and even El is making healing potions with water and food coloring.
“I don’t know what to make,” Lucas admitted shyly.
“What does your ranger use?”
“A bow,” Lucas said. “But I wouldn’t know even where to start with that.”
Steve smiled. “A bow’s easy. Come on, I’ll show you.”
He helped Lucas build up a stick with toilet paper and aluminum foil.
“Shouldn’t it be curved?” Lucas asked as Steve was putting on the handle.
“Nope!” Steve said cheerfully. “It curves when the bow is strung.” He added the long string and the bow bent. “See?”
“Oh!”
Lucas pulled back on the string and the bow bent further.
“It’s more for looks,” Steve said with a wince when the bow remained bent. He straightened it out. “But let’s make you a quiver. No arrows though, your mom would kill me.”
Lucas laughed.
“It’s so cool you know all this stuff, Steve,” Will said. “Why don’t you ever want to join us for D&D? I think you’d be really good at it.”
Steve flushed. “Too much math and I’m not very good at the role-playing part.”
“What would you do if you could play any character?” Eddie asked. “It doesn’t have to be any of the classes or races.”
Steve licked his lips. “You won’t make fun of me for it?”
Everyone looked down at their feet. They were swiftly learning that teasing Steve was one thing, but that they tended to take it too far.
“Go on,” Eddie urged. “If anyone makes fun of you for it, I’ll nuke their character to hell.” He grinned at all the kids.
“That has no effect on me,” Max said, tossing her hair back. “I’m not in your nerd game.”
“Whatever you say, zoomer,” Eddie said with a wink.
She gasped. “Who told?!”
El tilted her head to the side. “Why? Is a zoomer a bad thing?”
Max deflated. “No.”
Eddie winked at El and the girl blushed.
“So Stevie, what would you like to be?”
“The merchant.”
“But that’s–” Mike stopped when he saw Eddie’s glare. He licked his lips. “Wouldn’t it be more fun to be the hero?”
Steve tilted his head to the side and then scratched his cheek. “Um...I’m not trying to brag here. But I’ve been the hero in real life. It’s not fun. It’s terrifying. But being able to armor and arm the heroes? Make sure they have everything they need to succeed? Now there’s the dream.”
Eddie rubbed his bottom lip thoughtfully.
“That’s his DM thinking face,” Dustin said.
“Is that a bad thing?” El asked.
Lucas shrugged. “Sometimes. It can end in us fighting the worst Big Bad ever. But it can just make things more interesting. Like a tidbit of backstory for one of the NPCs.”
“So a former hero who has retired and settled down with the love of their life to sell the fruits of their travels...” Eddie spoke out loud more to himself than to everyone else. “Magic items, healing potions, weapons and armor the shopkeeper is willing to part with now that they’ve settled down.” He looked up at Steve with a grin. “I like it.”
Steve blushed hard.
Will lit up. “Does that mean the next merchant we meet is going to be Steve?”
Eddie’s grin got bigger. “Anybody have a problem with that?”
Everyone turned to look at Mike. “Hey, I don’t care what your NPCs do, man. As long as the story’s good.”
Steve’s blush spread from his cheeks to the tips of his ears and down the column of his neck.
He cleared his throat. “Everyone done with their weapons? Because I think we should do a final fitting so we can make sure nothing needs to be adjusted.”
“Why?” Will asked. “Don’t you think our mom’s did a good enough job?”
Dustin crossed his arms. “Yeah. I thought you trusted our moms.”
Steve sighed. “It’s because you’re adolescences. Your bodies are always constantly changing. Lose weight, grow two inches, fill out in weird areas. I just want to make sure everyone is going to have a good time next week, okay?”
Will and Dustin looked at each other and then nodded.
“Yeah, okay,” Dustin conceded.
“There are three bathroom and four bedrooms,” Steve announced. “So there should be rooms for everyone to change into their costumes.”
They all grabbed their costumes and then dashed for their favorite rooms to try and get there first. Max beat Dustin to the upstairs bathroom, sticking her tongue out at him before slamming the door. So Dustin got Steve’s bedroom.
All the other kids went scrambling for the other bathrooms and bedrooms while Lucas was left standing in the middle of front room, looking down at his sneakers.
“Did you want to try yours on right now?” Steve asked, leaning down to try and look Lucas in the eye.
“I don’t know if I want to be an elf anymore,” he muttered darkly.
Eddie and Steve shared a concerned glance.
“Did someone say something?” Eddie asked. “You were really happy about it when you were making the bow with Steve.”
“Not really,” Lucas said with a shrug. “I just kept thinking about the ears. I know I can have Will draw some really good ones, and he wouldn’t give me shit about it, but...”
Steve sighed. “But you know that Mike would. Fuck, I’m going to kill that kid.”
Lucas waved his hands. “No, no. It’s fine. I’ve got an old pirate costume from a school play I did. I’ll just join Queen Max’s crew.”
Eddie licked his lips. He didn’t have them yet. Jeff was still making them. He shared another glance with Steve.
Steve nodded.
Eddie turned back to Lucas. “It’s up to you, man. But Stevie and I have something in the works regarding the ear situation.”
Lucas glanced between Eddie and Steve but couldn’t find any indication that they were mocking him.
“This isn’t a prank to make me look stupid, is it?” he asked, just to be sure.
“Scout’s honor,” Steve said holding up the correct salute.
Eddie snorted. “Of course you were a boy scout. Could you be any more perfect?”
Steve blushed and ducked his head bashfully. “I’m really not.”
“Anyway,” Eddie huffed, shoving his hands in his back pockets. “Try on the outfit at least. Because you don’t have to be an elf with the costume Stevie made for you. But at least see it before you dismiss the idea completely out of hand.”
Lucas took a deep breath. “Yeah. You’re right. I’m being stupid. I shouldn’t care what they think anyway. Just as long as I’m having fun.”
“That’s the spirit!” Eddie said clapping him on the shoulder. “So where is this masterpiece, my liege?”
Steve walked up to the sofa and pulled out a plastic bag. He thrust it at Lucas’s chest.
Lucas looked down at the bag a moment before taking it from him. He pulled out the warm grey breeches first. They weren’t the broad kind that Steve had made for Max, but they were loose enough that they would hang a little over the top of the boots.
“They’re so soft...” he whispered.
“They’re made out of light weight material to keep you cool,” Steve explained. “There will be absolutely no heat stroke or heat exhaustion on my watch.”
Lucas let out a small huff of laughter and he took that as one for the win column.
He then pulled out the pale blue gambeson, it was trimmed in antique silver ribbon.
“It’s not strictly historically accurate,” Steve said with a shrug. “But I figured I could take liberties considering it was supposed to be fantasy based.”
“Steve...” Lucas said, voice rough from emotion. “It’s perfect.”
He threw his arms around Steve and hugged him tightly and Steve hugged him back twice as fierce.
“Let’s put these away for now,” Eddie said gently tugging them from Lucas’s grasp. “You try them on after everyone leaves.”
Lucas nodded and let Eddie pull them away, but he kept hugging Steve.
Suddenly there was a burst of activity as the other kids came back. Robin, too.
Steve let go of Lucas to take a look at his ragtag crew of misfits. Robin and Max’s costumes he knew would fit to perfection. His exacting standards would bow to nothing less.
The costumes that Joyce and Claudia made were good too. He let out a little breath through his nose.
“Looking great, guys!” he told them. He tugged Will’s tunic a bit. “You grew some, there.”
Will looked down and blushed. “I didn’t even realize.”
“That’s because you’ve been wearing shorts,” Steve explained, “so you just didn’t notice.”
“You were right to make sure the costumes still fit,” he murmured, trying to pull the tunic down to the right length.
Steve’s shoulders sagged. “You were just trying to defend your mom, dude. It’s fine.”
Will and Dustin still shared a look of chagrin anyway.
“I can add a couple of inches to the hem,” Steve continued. “I have some ribbon that will hide the extra material.”
Will nodded.
Steve moved on to Dustin and tugged on the side of his shirt under the vest and then tugged on the waistband too. “Don’t tell your mom this, but you’ve lost weight. She’ll freak out and try to feed you the entirety of your cupboard.”
Dustin blushed. Claudia Henderson was notorious for constantly feeding anyone who came through her door.
“But I’ll just pin it in case your weight fluctuates again,” Steve said. “The hazard of being teenagers unfortunately.”
Dustin nodded with a sigh of relief.
Max’s was perfect, as was El’s beautiful red dress.
But she was looking at the ground twisting her hands together.
“What’s up, Supergirl?” Eddie asked.
She looked over at Will and then down at her feet again. “I don’t want to be ungrateful. Joyce did an amazing job.”
Steve tilted his head. “But?”
She sighed. “But I was wanting a gold trim, but Joyce didn’t have any and I didn’t want to make her buy some...”
Steve held up a finger and then dashed off.
But he was back before they even had time to wonder where he had gone. In his hand was a cloth bag that he handed over to her. “Pick your ribbon. It’ll take me a day to add it to the dress, no problem.”
El looked down at the bag in shame. “Steve...”
He clicked his tongue. “I don’t want to hear it. I have to extend Will’s tunic anyway, adding ribbon to yours would be cinch in comparison. In fact, why don’t you both pick a matching ribbon to be twins.”
Will and El perked right up and the two of them wandered over to the sofa and began sorting through what Steve had.
That left Mike. Steve walked around the outfit. It had a white, billowy top with broad black pants and red tunic to watch El’s dress.
“Looks good, Mike,” he said. “Is there anything you’d want a little different? I don’t mind adding to your costume, too.”
Mike chewed his bottom lip. “There is the one thing. I asked Claudia about but she said she wouldn’t have the time...” He looked over at Dustin and blushed.
“What’s that?” Steve asked.
“Little...” Mike grunted. “I don’t know what they’re called. They aren’t strings or tassels, but kinda a cross between the two to kinda hang down off shoulder of the tunic...”
Steve pulled out his drawing pad and doodled something out really quick. Mike peered over his shoulder.
“A little more spaced,” Mike muttered.
Steve erased and doodled some more.
“Yeah, like that.”
Steve nodded. “I can do it, but you want to see something cool?”
Miked nodded back and Steve left the room again. He came back with a weird little device.
“This is what I use to make tassels,” he explained. “I’m betting Claudia doesn’t have one.”
Everyone looked at Dustin.
“I’ve certainly never seen one if she has,” he replied.
Steve nodded again. “That’s what I thought.” He showed them how to make tassels and Mike’s face lit up.
“This so cool, Steve,” he whispered.
“Do you want to make your own tassels?” Steve asked, gleeful at finally finding a common ground with the prickly teen.
“Can I?”
Steve shrugged. “I don’t see why not. You’ll just have to do it here. I’ll get the leather scraps from the tanners on Saturday and you can come over on Sunday to do it, okay?”
Mike nodded. “Thanks, man.”
El and Will picked out a nice braided gold ribbon and he set it aside, making a note to grab another spool to be on the safe side.
Soon it was time for everyone to leave.
Eddie took home Mike, El, and Will. Leaving Steve to take home Max, Lucas, and Robin.
Steve turned to Lucas. “You okay with these two seeing your costume?”
He figured Max was fine, but Robin might be a no go.
Lucas looked at her thoughtfully.
“I can go make us all lunch if you don’t want me to see it yet?” Robin suggested.
Max hopped up. “I can help. I want to be surprised next week.”
Lucas let out a sigh. “Thanks, ladies.”
Max rolled her eyes and Robin snorted as they wandered toward the kitchen.
Steve tossed Lucas the bag and immediately he began to strip. He put on the costume and ran his fingers over the material.
“Steve you really out did yourself.”
Steve grinned. “Bend, twist. Make sure you can move in it. I don’t want you popping a seam.”
Lucas did as he was told and Steve circled around him.
“Looks good,” he said. “Now go take a look in the mirror. Then tell me what you think.”
Lucas nodded.
Five minutes later Lucas came out with tears streaming down his face.
“Oh no!” Steve cried. “It’s that bad?”
Lucas shook his head and then launched himself into Steve’s arms. “It’s perfect, Steve. Thank you.”
Steve blushed. “You’re welcome.”

mark
Tumblr media
Mark’s entire world had been turned upside down in a matter of a few hours. Just four hours ago, he was working hard at dance practice, and now he was a father. He felt so many things, shock being the most prominent, shared with complete awe and love for you and your new son. The fact that he hadn’t held your newborn yet hadn’t even crossed his mind, he was far more concerned with both of your health and wellbeing, considering you’d had no pre-natal care. The hours dragged on, the amount of nurses and doctors coming in finally beginning to thin out. Your son had been laying on your chest for quite some time, having eaten and been burped already. You were so exhausted, a mixture of the birth and the late hour, but Mark was still wide awake, mind racing. However, managers and staff keep disappearing and reappearing, talking to Mark and whoever was on the phone in rapid speech. Mark could see the way it was affecting you, the way you move to almost protect your baby from the outsiders.
‘You should get some sleep,’ he murmurs, noticing your eyes dropping closed and then opening again.
‘I can’t look away from him,’ you admit, ‘he’s so perfect.’
‘I know, baby, but you need to rest,’ Mark reaches out a hand and brushes your hair from your face, ‘besides, I haven’t held him yet.’
Your eyes widen a little, ‘oh, of course not, I’m sorry.’
Mark chuckles, ‘it’s okay, it’s important he gets to know his mama. I’ll keep an eye on him while you nap, okay? I’ll wake you if he needs anything.’
‘Okay,’ you sit up slightly. The handover is awkward, it being the first time you’d done it, but eventually Mark has the tiny baby in his arms, kissing your forehead before murmuring a ‘goodnight, I love you,’ and settling into the armchair beside your bed.
‘Love you. Please keep him here,’ you mumble, turning onto your side and closing your eyes.
‘I will, don’t worry sweetheart.’
Mark is quiet for a few minutes, gently yet stiffly rocking the baby back and forth, examining his face and all the details. The baby looked so much like him, and he knew it, feeling an enormous sense of pride at the boy’s identical nose and eyes, that he’d seen in baby photos of his own over the years. Once he’s sure you’re asleep, he begins to talk to his son, wishing the infant to get used to his voice.
‘Hey, baby boy,’ Mark begins, lightly shushing the baby when he fusses, ‘it’s okay, everything is just fine.’
You were just on the verge of falling asleep when you hear Mark’s voice, heart warming at the sound of the love of your life talking to your firstborn.
‘I didn’t even know you existed a few hours ago, but God, I love you. More than anything. You’re so perfect, such a beautiful baby, all from your mama. She did so well, didn’t she? Carried you for all that time… I promise I’ll be here for you, always. Everything I do from now on is for you and your mummy/mommy.’
You still lay awake, eyes filled with hot tears at the pure love that overcomes you.
Mark is silent for a few moments, staring back into his son’s deep brown eyes, ‘I promise I won’t let you down. I love you, son.’
renjun
Tumblr media
This was the moment Renjun had been anticipating since the moment you found out you were pregnant. He’d been terrified at the time, the pregnancy was unexpected and Renjun wasn’t sure he was ready or capable of being a father. At the same time, Renjun’s thoughts were filled with questions and worries about your baby. What would the baby look like? How big would the baby be? Would they come during the day or the night? But his biggest fear of all, was that your baby wouldn’t like him. He didn’t have the best luck with other member’s babies; generally they would cry and protest in his arms. He tried to prevent this, doing any and every bonding exercise with your bump that he could think or read about, hoping that when your son arrived he would feel comfortable and safe with him.
‘Jun?’ You’d been holding the baby for over an hour, having some skin to skin and your first feed. Renjun froze a little at the expectant look on your face, like he knew what you were about to ask.
‘You should hold him.’
Renjun blinks, ‘are you sure? you’re bonding with hi-‘
‘Jun,’ you repeat, softly, ‘he’s your son. He’s not going to hate you. Besides, I want to see my boys together.’
‘Okay,’ Renjun reaches down for the baby on your chest, cringing when the baby whines and fusses, ‘hey, don’t cry, please don’t cry.’
Renjun rocks and bounces him awkwardly but to no avail, and he sends you a look screaming for help.
‘It’s ok, Jun,’ you smile, ‘keep talking to him.’
‘He doesn’t like me,’ Renjun begins to panic, ‘he was happy with you, maybe you should-‘
‘Junie,’ you retort softly, ‘he just doesn’t like that he’s been moved. Keep talking to him, he’ll know your voice.’
Renjun gives himself a mental pep talk, slightly relaxing when he looks at the face of his baby boy.
‘It’s okay, it’s just me, I’m your daddy.’
You give Renjun an encouraging smile, and so he continues, ‘I really hope you like me from now on. Most babies don’t.’
The baby is gradually calming down at his father’s voice, so Renjun keeps talking.
‘Good boy, do you know my voice? I tried to talk to you as much as possible while you were in there so I hope you recognise it.’
The baby is now settled, staring up at his father with big brown eyes. Your heart melts at Renjun’s wide, toothy grin.
‘He likes me,’ he says to you, before turning back to the baby, ‘I think you look like a Tengfei.’
‘I like that name,’ you hum, ‘Huang Tengfei it is.’
Renjun’s smile gets impossibly wider, pride filling his chest knowing he’d just named his firstborn baby boy.
‘I love you so much, Huang Tengfei.’
jeno
Tumblr media
You had never felt so at peace. You had just given birth to your first child, a daughter Moonbyeol in your bedroom at home a few hours earlier. Already, Moonbyeol was a very chilled baby, rarely fussing or crying. She was perfectly happy just laying on your chest, staring back at you. Jeno had been laying beside you for several hours now, engaging in hushed conversation with you about your newborn, all while unable to take his eyes off her. It hadn’t even crossed his mind that he hadn’t properly held his daughter, as you’d been snuggled together so close. As time passed, you grew more and more exhausted, the energy you had spent during the birth beginning to weigh you down.
‘How long has it been since she fed?’ you wonder aloud, ‘the midwife said every three hours..’
‘I think it was at six,’ Jeno says, ’so three and a bit hours ago.’
‘She needs more,’ you mumble, sighing deeply, already pulling your top down to give Moonbyeol access. Jeno helps you guide her head to your chest.
‘Agh,’ the pain is sharp when she latches, and Jeno kisses and rubs your hair in encouragement.
‘You’re doing so well, look at how well she eats.’
‘It hurts so much Jen,’ Jeno’s heart hurts at the look on your face.
‘I know, I know,’ Jeno frowns, ‘it’ll get better, with time.’
‘I hope so,’ you say, ‘I feel sore all over.’
‘You’ve been so incredible,’ Jeno praises, ‘we did so well with her.’
‘Yeah, we did,’ you grin, the and the two of you settle into small talk while Moonbyeol eats. After some time, she pulls away, ready to be burped.
‘I don’t want to move,’ you admit, ‘too tired.’
‘Hey, I’ll take her,’ Jeno offers, ‘you can stay in bed. Plus, I.. I haven’t got to hold her yet.’
‘Oh. I’m sorry.’
‘It’s okay, don’t be silly,’ Jeno presses a kiss to your cheek, ‘I’ve been so close this whole time. You should get some rest.’
You suddenly realise how drained and exhausted you truly were, eyes and body heavy with fatigue.
‘I think I probably should,’ you mumble tiredly, ‘Moonie, daddy’s going to get all that horrible air up for you.’
It takes perhaps a little longer than it should have, but eventually the baby is successfully passed into Jeno’s arms.
‘Hey, Moonie,’ Jeno rests her on his shoulder, gently patting her back, ‘you’re so tiny.’
You move to lay down on your side and rest your eyes as Jeno talks to your daughter in a hushed voice.
‘You’re so beautiful,’ Jeno meets his daughters eyes, seeing his own staring back at him, ‘look at those brown eyes! So pretty. No boy will ever be good enough for such a beautiful girl.’
Jeno slowly wanders out of your room and into Moonbyeol’s nursery, wanting to give you some peace to sleep.
‘This is your room,’ Jeno turns the baby in his arms so that she’s facing the majority of the room, ‘this is where you’ll sleep, where you’ll play… I hope you like the way we decorated. If you don’t, we can change it later.’
Moonbyeol’s eyes flicker around the room, although her expression is blank.
‘Look, Moonie,’ he walks towards her unused crib, looking at the silver mobile that hangs over it, white and yellow moon and stars hanging down, ‘it’s like you! You’re our little moon star.’
Moonbyeol burps at that exact moment, and Jeno chuckles, not sure whether he should be offended or not.
‘Well, that says what you think of that.’

Donghyuck naturally comes across as a conceited and cocky person, you know that’s just his humour. He’s cheeky and bold, but at the same time down to earth and a total sweetheart. He acted quite similarly when it came to his impending fatherhood, on the outside appearing as though he was completely confident, that he would take being a father in his stride. But on the inside, he was terrified. Sometimes he would catch sight of you, his pregnant wife, and would feel a deep sense of dread alongside the rush of love that would bubble up in his chest. When you went into labour while eating dinner together, he thought he was going to be sick, the crashing realisation that this was it. You’d done so well, going through hours of contractions before your son began to struggle, and you were taken into an emergency c-section. You were crying softly as they prepared you for the surgery. Donghyuck emerged from the bathroom in his scrubs to see you laying there, and you immediately you’d reached out for him. In that moment, he knew how much you needed him, how much both of you needed him. In that moment he knew he’d do anything to be the best father and husband.
Your son Dalgun was eventually delivered through the C-section, laying on your chest for quite some time as you were stitched up and wheeled back to your hospital room. Donghyuck hates the look of discomfort on your face as you try to move around on the bed and feed. You’re exhausted, in pain and in need of a good rest, but you had to stay awake for your son.
Donghyuck tries to make himself useful, keeping the hospital room tidy and making sure your water cup was filled and you hadn’t bled too heavily onto the pad beneath you.
Part of him aches to hold his baby boy. He so desperately wants to just reach out and take the baby into his arms, shower him in all of the love he had to give. But at the same time, he didn’t want to. He was frightened that his son would be unsettled with him, that he would do something astronomically wrong like drop him. After some time, the nurse knocks softly on the door, coming to check on your surgery site.
‘Donghyuck,’ you croak, his heart hurting when he sees you laying there, exhausted and in pain with your son on your chest, ‘will you take him?’
‘I-‘
‘Hyuck,’ you notice the way he freezes, but he melts and relaxes at your tone, ‘its okay. You’re his daddy. You did so well at the classes.’
Donghyuck shakes himself. You’re vulnerable, you’ve just had invasive surgery and you need him. And he’s terrified of holding his own baby.
‘Okay.’
The nurse helps with the handover as it pains you to lean too far, and suddenly there’s a seven pound baby wriggling around in his arms. Dalgun cries shrilly at being moved, Donghyuck cringing as he wails.
‘Dalgun-ah,’ he clumsily rocks the baby, ‘won’t you be a good boy while mummy/mommy gets looked after? I’m not a stranger, I’m your daddy.’
Donghyuck sways on his feet, soothing Dalgun, ‘your mummy/mommy is so so brave. She is so incredible, Dalgun-ah, she’ll be the best mummy/mommy in the whole world to you, I just know it. And I’ll try my absolute hardest to be the best daddy. I love you.’
jaemin
Tumblr media
Jaemin thinks that his daughter’s birth was nothing short of perfect. You had given birth to Chaeyeon in a birthing centre, early in the morning in a birthing pool.
Jaemin had sat right behind you, in his swim shorts, with you between his legs, not even wincing when you near crushed his hands while you pushed. Jaemin had been the one to cut the cord, before the baby was taken away to be weighed and given her first injection.
Jaemin had felt new foreign feeling of resentment towards the nurse, who he knows deep down is just doing her job and ultimately protecting your daughter from disease, but at the same time, she made his baby girl cry.
Chaeyeon is bought back to you, now with a band-aid covering her injection site. Jaemin holds you in his arms, resting his chin on your shoulder and just soaking in your daughters face. For some time, the two of you get used to Chaeyeon, taking in her appearance and mannerisms and sounds. Jaemin doesn’t even really care how dirty the water is.
‘Y/N? Why don’t we get you cleaned up a little?’ the nurse suggests, and you’re more than happy to be helped out of the pool and herded into the shower in the conjoining bathroom. Another nurse had held Chaeyeon as Jaemin carried you bridal style into the bathroom and gently setting you down on the shower seat. He hangs around for a few minutes, eyes darting between you and Chaeyeon’s general direction, clearly conflicted as to who to stay with.
‘Go and be with her Jaem,’ you hum.
’Do you need me?’
‘I’m all good here,’ you answer honestly, ‘I think this may be quite gross, anyway.’
‘Okay,’ Jaemin leans over to kiss your cheek, ‘I’ll look after her.’
‘Oh!’ The nurse left in the delivery room is holding the little bundle in her arms, ‘lets go to daddy, shall we?’
Jaemin beams as his baby girl is handed to him for the very first time. His heart feels like it may burst out of his chest as she gurgles, tiny fists waving around above the pink blankets.
‘Oh, angel,’ Jaemin coos, ‘you’re killing me.’
Jaemin knew that this baby in his arms officially completely owned his heart. He knew it was over for him, that there was nothing he would not do for his little girl.
‘You’re such a pretty girl, Chaeyeon,’ his heart aches at her glistening eyes and nose that mirrors his own.
‘You’ll have so much love in your life. You already do. You have so many uncles who are just dying to meet you, you have a godfather who would do anything for you. I.. I would die for you, I love you more than anything in this world.’
Chaeyeon waves her arm around, peeling back the blanket slightly.
‘Oh, you don’t have any clothes on,’ Jaemin brings her over to the changing table, lowering her down as slowly as he possibly can.
‘Which should be your first ever outfit?’ Jaemin sifts through the folded up baby-grows in the small suitcase you’d brought along. He picks out a white one, patterned with little brown teddy bears.
‘Uncle Mark bought you this one,’ Jaemin buttons up the onesie, ‘like I told you, everyone loves you Chae. But not as much as I do!’
Jaemin nuzzles their noses together, before cradling Chaeyeon in his chest, pressing a kiss on top of her head.
‘I love you, angel. I’ll be here for you always.’
chenle
Tumblr media
Chenle was the best partner throughout your entire pregnancy. He did absolutely everything for you and your baby’s comfort, fulfilling your every need and wish, whether monetary, physical or emotional.
It seemed everything had to be perfect, the quality of your care, your baby’s nursery, your birth plans, everything. If you showed any slight indication of discomfort at any point in your pregnancy, Chenle was instantly at your side, going out of his way to somehow alleviate your pain. He was almost jumpy in that sense.
He was strangely calmer than you thought he would be when you went into labour. You had been taken to the hospital where Chenle and his family had naturally made sure you would receive the best treatment, with a spacious private room and a dedicated team of familiar doctors and nurses. You laboured for hours on end. For nearly twenty hours, you’d suffered through some of the most immense pain imaginable, completely supported by Chenle who fusses over you and holds your hand through it all. Frustratingly, you had been dilating excruciatingly slowly, and eventually the doctors decide a c-section would be best for both you and your baby.
Your beautiful baby girl joined you in the early evening. Chenle was so overcome with love for his daughter. You both knew that she would be his little princess, that he would spoil her rotten and that nobody would ever lay a hand on her. He came up with the name Caihong, meaning rainbow. She was the rainbow that brightened up his life.
When Caihong came out, they had taken her away briefly to be weighed and checked over, before returning her to you.
‘You did so so well,’ Chenle stands as close to you as he can get, still in his scrubs as they stitch you back up, ’she’s beautiful. I can’t believe it.’
‘I’m so tired,’ you laugh, having been awake for the entirety of your labour, ‘she’s ruined me.’
Chenle chuckles, ‘they’re going to wheel you back into the room once they’re done. We’ll turn the lights down. You can nap soon.’
‘M’kay,’ you roll your head back down to look at your baby, ‘she’s perfect.’
’She is,’ Chenle nods, leaning down and pressing kisses into your hair, ‘I love you both so much.’
The first hour with your daughter is so precious. You are taken back to your private room in your bed, Caihong resting on your chest the whole time. You’d done your first feed, burping her while sitting up in your bed. Once you’d finished, the nurses left, and the three of you were alone together for the first time.
‘Are you tired?’ Chenle asks, running a hand through your hair, fussing over you.
‘I’m exhausted,’ you murmur, ‘never been so tired.’
‘Why don’t I take her?’ he suggests, ‘you can lay down and have a nap.’
‘Are you sure?’ the offer is so unbelievably tempting, ‘I don’t want to just leave you on your own.’
‘I’ll be just fine,’ Chenle reassures you, ‘you just fed her. I can change her myself, if she needs you I’ll wake you.’
‘Okay,’ you nod, moving your arms so that Chenle can easily take Caihong from you.
He grunts dramatically as he raises her up, as though he was lifting some massive weight, ‘hi baby girl.’
Chenle holds Caihong in one arm as he helps you lay down comfortably, reclining your bed back down with the remote so you were laying down.
‘Comfortable?’ Chenle checks, rubbing your upper arm with his spare hand.
‘Yes,’ your eyes are already closed, ‘love you, Lele.’
Chenle grins, ‘I love you too.’
As you fall asleep, Chenle slowly does a few laps of the hospital room, rocking Caihong in his arms. Once he’s sure you’re mostly asleep, and that talking won’t disturb you, he speaks to Caihong in a hushed voice.
‘Hi my little angel,’ he stares into her shining brown eyes, absolutely entranced by her, ‘we’ve waited for so long for you. Ever since your uncle had your cousins, I’ve wanted a baby of my own. And now you’re finally here. You’re already so loved, Caihong. I’ll do anything for you.’
Caihong looks at him almost as if she’s listening and understands what he’s saying. Chenle’s heart seizes and threatens to break out of his chest, he loves her so much.
‘You own my heart, Caihong. Daddy loves you so much.’
jisung
Tumblr media
Jisung was the first to hold his baby girl, and although it wasn’t for long, it was a fact he took great pride in. Jisung had completely frozen up when your midwife had asked him if he wanted to deliver the baby. His mouth had dried up, completely unsure of what to say, until he caught your gaze, face slightly screwed up in discomfort, but still encouraging him to say yes. He had taken the midwife’s offer, and under her guidance, caught your baby girl as she came out. Jisung had worried that he would drop her, due to the baby being covered in blood and various bodily fluids, but thankfully he manages to keep her in his grip, holding her up for a few moments before placing her on your chest.
Jisung didn’t get her back for another hour or so, not that he minded. You handled your first hour of motherhood expertly, Chunae was an extremely calm baby who fed easily. She was so intrigued by the both of you, as you both were with her, her brown eyes studying your faces. Jisung had never felt so many overpowering emotions at once. Firstly the feeling of pride that he’d been the one to bring Chunae into the world, and the fact he had a part in creating what he believed to be the most beautiful baby in the whole world. And of course, he felt such an overwhelming and intense love for both you and your baby, after watching you go through hours and hours of labour and delivery in his family home. You had been giving skin to skin for over an hour before you offered the baby to Jisung.
‘Hey, Jisungie,’ he is immediately by your side.
‘Do you need something? Water? Another pillow? The pad changed? Are you in a lot of pain?’
You smile at how flustered and caring he is, shaking your head, ‘no, I’m alright. I just thought you might want to hold her.’
Jisung softens, heart suddenly hammering in his chest, ‘oh, y-yeah. Yeah, of course I’d love to.’
Jisung leans down and gently picks Chunae from your chest, taking a few moments to get her into a good position.
‘Hi baby girl,’ he murmurs, strangely nervous, as though it was somebody else’s child.
‘Ah, good timing,’ Jisung’s mother suddenly enters the room, ‘I made soup for you Y/N.’
‘Oh, amazing, I’m starving,’ you welcome the bowl of hot soup with both hands.
Jisung wanders the room, rocking the slightly gurgling Chunae in his arms as he approaches the bedroom window. He doesn’t really notice you watching him, his thoughts all consumed by Chunae. His mother even points it out, catching your eyes and nodding towards him.
‘Hi,’ Jisung shakily removes a hand from underneath her to play with her own tiny hand, melting when she curls her hand around his finger.
‘You’re so small,’ he whispered, ‘like a doll. And so well behaved too, you didn’t cry one bit when I picked you up.’
Chunae just looks back up at him, and Jisung gently wipes at the spit collecting at her mouth with a cloth.
‘I promise I’ll look after you angel,’ he nuzzles his nose against hers, ‘no one will ever hurt you. They’ll have to go through me first.’
Jisung suddenly can’t get the image of his baby girl as a teenager out of his head, his getting her heart broken by some worthless teenage boy. He imagines comforting her, giving her encouraging talks and building her confidence back up, utilising the skills he would have learned as a father to his little girl over the years. But for now, he knows nothing, only what he has read in pregnancy and parenting books.
‘I don’t know much,’ Jisung rubs his thumb up and down on her face, ‘but I promise I’ll be the best father I can possibly be for you. I’ll try so hard to do everything that’s right for you. I already love you more than anything in this world.’
Chunae yawns, tiny fists flailing weakly as she does.
‘Am I boring you?’ Jisung chuckles, ’you can’t be tired, not when I’ve just got you.’
‘You should sit down with her,’ you suggest, taking a short break from your soup, ’she’ll fall asleep on you.’
‘I think I may fall asleep also,’ Jisung chuckles, although settling into the armchair near your bed.
‘Group nap?’ You suggest, your own eyes feeling heavy.
The group nap very quickly ends in Jisung’s mother removing the sleeping Chunae from a sleeping Jisung’s chest to lay in her crib.

Hi could you do an angsty one shot where Eddie cheats on the reader? Or when the reader thinks he’s cheated and they argue? Whatever you feel like, thanks 😊
think this is my fav angst i've written so far, thanks for the request
infidelity / eddie munson
part two
cw: cheating/thoughts of cheating, cursing, overall just a lot of angst and tears
sometimes it's hard to know what you want.
--
eddie never meant to make meeting with chrissy cunningham a regular thing. but she was a really sweet girl who was struggling and eddie always had to be a savior. so when she kept asking to meet him during lunch out in the woods, he kept going. and eventually, he began asking her to meet him and before he knew it they were hanging out there most days of the week and hiding it from everyone. even you.
at first you didn’t notice and frankly didn’t care. you weren’t obsessive over eddie because you were confident in his love for you. at least you thought you were. he kept disappearing though and he wouldn’t give you an answer. if he did he lied, which was stupid because he was so easy for you to read. it just didn’t make sense. so, you decided to skip fifth period and see just where he kept disappearing to during his lunch hour. lucas had admitted to you that he wasn’t at lunch much anymore, but was secretive of where he was going. the boys had all assumed he was meeting you.
so there you were, stood behind the bleachers as you watched eddie stand near the entrance of the woods while looking around for someone expectantly. what you didn’t expect was to see chrissy cunningham running up to meet him. you didn’t freak out, you knew eddie was the only one in school who sold drugs and who were you to judge if people needed them or not? but then he held open his arms, engulfing the giggling blonde in a tight hug. you felt a sharp pain in your heart as you watched him guide her into the woods, arm slung across her shoulder as she wrapped one around his back.
you debated running after them and confronting them, but you were smarter than that. running up at them a screaming and crying mess would get you nowhere. you needed evidence. so, you acted as though nothing was wrong when eddie came up to you after school and gave you a kiss as he did everyday. but you couldn’t help but wonder if those lips had been against someone else’s.
“so, uh, i think we need a date night. what do you say the movies? friday night? they’re replaying nightmare on elm street since the new one’s coming out in a month or so, i know you love that movie,” you ask with a smile. eddie’s smile falters and he gulps nervously.
he scratches the back of his neck, hoping he doesn’t seem like he’s lying. “i’d love to, baby, but i’m supposed to hang out with gareth and the guys. saturday though?” he asks with a fake smile. you didn’t want him to know you had caught on.
you pulled away from him and nodded. “yeah, saturday, i’ll call you about times?” you say. he nods and smiles. “alright, i’m gonna head home,” you say, holding the strap of your bag tightly.
“you don’t want to come to hellfire?” he asked confused. you almost always came to watch.
you shook your head no. “nah, i’m not feeling too good,” you shrugged.
eddie frowned. “oh, well, go rest and get better, okay? maybe i’ll stop by later,” he says stepping back up to you. “i love you, babe,” he says and it hurt so much more than it ever has. you couldn’t shake what you'd seen today, and how did you know he even meant it anymore? he pressed a kiss to your forehead and you nodded, turning and heading to your car as tears stung your eyes.
it was currently wednesday, so you planned on interrogating one of eddie’s minions that wouldn’t crack if eddie were to question him. so that’s how you ended up at hard-headed mike wheeler’s house at 9 o’clock on a wednesday night. to say he was shocked to see you sitting on his bed in his dirty bedroom would be an understatement. “y/n?” he asks, looking back at nancy who just shrugged and went to her own room.
“hey, mike,” you said hoarsely, not bothering to try and hide you’ve been crying.
mike looks at you in confusion before slowly closing his door and dropping his bag. “not trying to be rude, but why are you here? in my bed… and crying?” he asks cautiously approaching you.
“just know if you tell anyone what we talk about in here i will chop your tiny dick off,” you say aggressively pointing at him.
“my dick isn’t- nevermind. yeah, i won’t tell anyone. to be honest, y/n you’re kind of scary,” he says, cautiously sitting on his own bed across from you. “now, can you please tell me what’s going on?” he asks.
you sigh, wiping a tear from your eye. “i think eddie’s cheating on me,” you spoke quietly.
mike’s jaw dropped. “no way,” he says causing you to give him a look. “i-i mean, he’s like obsessed with you, he talks about you like all the time. even refers to you as his princess, it’s kind of weird honestly…” mike continues.
“but has it been the same recently? have you noticed a change in, i don’t know, the past month i think?” you ask, chewing on your nails.
mike thought back and he hated to say it, but he did. “y/n… do you really think he has the ability to cheat on you?” he asks, struggling to believe it.
“so you have noticed something,” you observe, feeling as though you may throw up.
mike bit his lip and looked away. “he just, doesn’t talk as much about you. i just thought maybe since you’ve been together so long that he didn’t feel like he needed to? in the beginning he was worried about us hitting on you, on his bullshit about how we couldn’t look at you in the wrong way and so on but obviously we caught on quickly. he also misses lunch like a lot, we figured he was with you but lucas said that wasn’t it. i know he sells, but he doesn’t get that much business,” mike explains. a couple tears fall from your eyes and mike feels awkward but just looks down at his hands.
“he’s been going to the woods behind the football field, with chrissy cunningham. i saw them today,” you said brokenly.
mike furrows his eyebrows. “chrissy cunningham? you’re sure, like, jason’s girlfriend?” he asks and you nod. “holy shit…” he mutters.
“i asked him to hangout friday, they’re playing nightmare on elm and it’s like his favorite movie. but he said he’s hanging out with gareth. can you find out if that’s true? maybe ask what everyone’s doing and get back to me?” you ask. mike chewed on his lip as he thought. he didn’t want to betray eddie, but if he was cheating…
if eddie was like a male parental figure for the guys, you were definitely like a mother. you always gave the boys rides home if they needed it, you’d bought them pizza, and even tried helping them get girls. “yeah, i’ll ask tomorrow at lunch. it’s hot dog day, for some reason he thinks they’re amazing,” mike comments causing you to laugh. it was true, eddie for some reason loved those nasty ass hot dogs.
so the next day at lunch, mike did just that. he was normally shit at being subtle, but luckily dustin first brought up the topic of weekend plans. almost everyone had answered except eddie. “so, eddie. what about you? doing anything tomorrow or the weekend?” he asked nonchalantly. eddie looked up, mike almost wanting to laugh at the fact his mouth was actually full of hot dog.
after swallowing, he wipes his mouth and looks at him. “yeah, i’m going to see nightmare on elm street tomorrow night. you know they’re showing that shit?” he smiles, taking another bite. a pit forms in mike’s stomach. he wasn’t hanging out with gareth.
“oh, cool. cool. you going with y/n, you both love that shit?” mike pushes and eddie gives him a nervous look. he looks at mike, his eyes flashing somewhere else in the cafeteria before he pulls himself back together.
he nods, looking around the table. “uh, yeah. y/n and me are going,” eddie confirms. mike purses his lip, looking down to his tray as he thinks. telling you hurt, because he saw your eyes water before thanking him and leaving. so you made a plan, you were going to go to the movie and see if eddie was there. if he was with chrissy, you’d confront him at his house after.
so that’s where you stood five minutes before the movie started. there were only doing one showing tonight, and knowing eddie he would’ve arrived here thirty minutes early. he always made you do that. you paid for a ticket and stood outside the door to the theater, trying to psych yourself up to go in there and see something that might break you inside.
you took a final deep breath and walked into the theater. you peaked around the corner of the wall separating the entrance from the seats and scanned up the crowd. you avoided looking at your seats first, scared of what you might find. you and eddie always sat in the same place, and when your eyes finally fell on it, you wanted to throw up.
in his usual seat sat your boyfriend, and in yours was chrissy cunningham. he had his arm on the back of the chair, like he always did for you and they were laughing, eating popcorn from a bucket on chrissy’s lap. you turned around quickly, running out of the theater and back to your car. the second your door closed you broke down. all you felt was pain.
eddie was your everything. in a world where you had no one, you thought you would always have eddie. you spent months in your relationship finally getting comfortable with the fact that he actually wanted you after no one had. and now? pretty cheerleader, queen of hawkins high, chrissy cunningham had his attention. you cried in your car for about an hour, and when you could finally see straight you drove to his trailer and sat on the steps, waiting for him to come home. you just prayed chrissy wasn’t with him. that would break you more than anything.
you sat impatiently, bouncing your leg until you heard the tell-tale sign of metallica coming from his van. soon, his headlights were blinding you until his engine cut. “baby?” he asked as his door opened, it quickly slamming shut as he walked quickly up to you. “baby, what are you doing here, it's getting cold?” he asks, standing in front of you.
“how was your movie?” you asked in an empty voice and eddie felt his blood run cold.
he looked around nervously before opening his mouth. “what do you mean? i-i was with gareth-”
“i saw you, eddie!” you yelled, looking up at him. “i was there! i knew you were acting weird and i find you with chrissy fucking cunningham?” you scoff, lowering your voice now that you had his attention.
eddie was in shock. “i-i can explain,” he said and looked at you like he was genuinely in pain.
you raised your eyebrows, “then explain.”
eddie opened his mouth, searching for words but he didn’t have any. he didn’t know how to explain what he’d been doing or what has been going through his head. “i love you,” he whispered desperately.
you scoffed in disbelief and stood up. “no, you don’t,” you sneer at him.
eddie mouth goes dry. “i do, y/n, i love you,” he tries reassuring. you shake your head, lip quivering as you feel tears well up in your eyes once more.
“then why are you cheating on me?” you ask with a broken voice.
eddie grabs you by the arms to get you to look at him. “baby, i’m not cheating on you. me and chrissy, we- we’re just friends,” he says desperately. you shake your head, bringing your hands up to your face.
“no,” you mumble. and eddie opens his mouth to respond. “you meet her three times a week. you hide in the fucking woods with her. you hug her like she’s- like you hug me. you lied to me, you took her to your favorite movie, and-and you put her in my seat!” you tell him, voice rising as you go as you try ripping away from his grip.
eddie shakes his head, eyes filling with tears. “no- babe, it’s not like that,” he cries, trying to grab you again.
you cry as you shove him away. “then what’s it like? because you know i wouldn’t have cared if you and chrissy were just friends. but you lied and kept it all from me. you chose her over me, you’re treating her exactly how you treated me before you asked me out. you took her to see nightmare on elm street,” you say, emphasizing the title while staring deep into his eyes.
“i thought she would like it, it’s nothing else!” he says.
you turn from him as you take a deep breath. “was that your first time hanging out with her, outside of school?” you ask.
“yes, baby, i just thought she’d-” he starts.
“you took her on the same first date you took me on. on that date, we had our first kiss. on that date, you asked me out. and now? it’s not even ours anymore,” you say, eddie’s heart dropping with every sentence. he totally forgot that was 'your movie.'
he shook his head and reached for your hands once again. “y/n, it’s still ours, it will always be ours,” he said, tears visibly falling.
you let out a sob that broke eddie’s heart. “you kiss her?” you ask.
“no, no, baby, i didn't kiss her,” he says immediately and you know he’s honest. that takes the tiniest bit of hurt away from you.
you take a deep breath before asking the next question. “but you like her?” you whisper. eddie shakes his head no but you notice the unsureness behind his eyes. “don’t lie,” you continue.
eddie runs a hand over his mouth and spins around, running his hands through his hair. “i don’t know,” he finally admits, scaring himself. you choke back a sob, feeling like everything in your life is a lie. “but, i do know that i love you,” eddie says, walking up to you.
you shake your head once more, feeling your whole body become heavy with helplessness. you felt like you were gonna throw up. “don’t,” you say, feeling your mouth begin to salivate as you hold out your hand. “don’t say you love me if i’m not the only one,” you say and then gag.
“but it’s true, i’m in love with you, y/n, please believe me,” eddie begs trying to get closer to you. your hands fall to your knees as you heave and then suddenly you’re throwing up whatever you had eaten earlier. “woah, baby,” eddie said in a worried tone, immediately reaching forward to hold your hair and rub your back as you continued throwing up. once you are able to stop and stand, you push him off of you.
you wipe your mouth, more tears filling your eyes. “don’t call me that,” you say, stepping back away from him.
“y/n, please. everything can be fine. look i-i’ll stop talking to chrissy. that’s no problem, i’ll do anything,” he begs.
you close your eyes, your head was starting to hurt from all of this. “eddie, i can’t be with you when you have feelings for someone else,” you say.
eddie lets out a huff, trying to hold back a sob. “i don’t have feelings for her, i-i don’t think i do. i know that you’re who i want, i never questioned that,” he explains.
“you still lied to me,” you say.
the sob leaves his lips. “i know and i’m sorry. i’m so sorry. but please, y/n, you are the only one i want. chrissy is nothing compared to you,” he says.
“i need to go home. i need to think. i need a break,” you say seriously, taking a deep breath.
eddie starts to shake, his lip trembling. “what? a break? like… from us?” eddie croaks.
you nod and brush past him, walking to your car. “we’re done, eddie. go figure your shit out with chrissy,” you say, feeling completely numb as you do.
eddie runs after you, grabbing your arm and turning you to face him. “baby, please don’t do this. i do not want chrissy, you are it for me,” he emphasizes his words, tucking a strand of your hair behind your ear. tears streaming down both your faces.
“if that’s true then a break won’t change that. i’m not changing my mind,” you say and eddie’s head falls forward as a sob rocks through his whole body.
he sniffles and hiccups before meeting your eyes again. “so this is it?” he asks in the most heartbroken voice you’d ever heard.
you look away from him, not wanting to cry more. “goodbye, eddie,” you whisper, waiting for him to take his hands from you.
eddie cries, leaning his head down to rest against yours. “i’m sorry i did this to us,” he whimpers, causing you to screw your eyes shut in pain.
“eddie…” you trail, watching him look at you through his tear-filled brown eyes. “let me go,” you say quietly, watching him shut his eyes.
he shakes his head no, stroking your face with his thumb. “i can’t. i love you, i want to marry you, y/n. i can’t just let you go,” he sobs. everything he was saying was making you want to stay, but you knew it would be a mistake if you did.
“eddie, you have to. i need space, please,” you beg. eddie gave you a final, heart broken look before backing away slowly. “goodnight, eddie,” you say quietly and open your car door.
“i love you,” he desperately tries once more as your car door closes. you pull out of his driveway and head home, tears clouding your vision as you go. eddie pulls at his hair and falls to his knees, sobbing at the fact that he just lost you. eddie was feeling more pain than he’d ever felt in his life, and he didn’t even know what to do with himself at this point.

“a little drunk kiss”
luca fantilli x reader
warning: creepy men, cursing, & underage drinking
not proof read so sorry if it’s confusing lolz
its your freshman year of college at michigan, and you and johnny druskinis have a class together. you both instantly became friendly, and you guys became quite close over first semester. of course this meant him forcing you to go to every home game, and also meeting the team. you’re stuck with a shitty dorm mate, and have no one from home, so considering johnny as one of your best friends is an understatement.
of course you’re acquainted with the guys on the team, but you aren’t necessarily close with many of the guys besides johnny and for some odd reason ethan and dylan. johnny’s best friend on the team is easily luca, so obviously one would assume you and luca are close, but it’s the opposite. you’re always so shy around luca, and he just gives you the same treatment you give him.
why you’re so shy around him is a mystery. a mystery to only yourself and luca. everyone knows how outgoing luca is, yet for some reason he gets shy around you and vice versa. this proves that there’s some underlying issues as to why you’re both so shy, and everyone assumes it’s because you guys find each other attractive. which isn’t necessarily incorrect, but neither of you would ever admit that to anyone.
as you tap your fingers on the side of your half full solo cup, you notice johnny getting up from the spot on the couch next to you. “where ya going?” you say, slightly slurring your words. johnny chuckles at your tipsy state, and pats the top of your head.
“i’ll be right back solider, i gotta piss” he says, calling you the stupid nickname that you have no idea where it came from. you nod your head and pull your phone out of your pocket. a few moments later the couch dips next you, and you assume johnny’s back.
“that was qui-“ you look up, and see one of the fraternity brothers sitting next to you. “oh, hi?” you say, confused what he could want from you.
“you’re pretty and you’re sitting alone. what’s your deal? you got a boyfriend?” he winks, making you immediately disgusted. you have no intentions of hooking up with anyone, so you lie. “yeah i do actually.” you smile, trying to be nice.
“oh shit really? who? where? i don’t see anyone.” he smirks, about to place a hand on your thigh. you groan and spot the only familiar face in the crowd, luca. your intoxicated and slightly scared self rises up from the couch and walks over to the luca. he turns his head to face you, and you turn your head to see if the guy is still looking. he is, so you grab lucas cheeks. “you’re my boyfriend now, okay? i’ll explain later.” you say, before immediately pulling him in for a kiss. luca is shocked at what’s happening, but quickly soothes when he realizes that the girl he’s been so desperately wanting to ask out is kissing him.
he kisses you back, before you suddenly pull away from the kiss. you trun around to see the guy from earlier looking at you both dumbfounded. luca doesn’t really know what’s going on, but begins to put the pieces together looking at the guys face. luca raises his eyes at the guy and smirks, letting him know he can back off. the guy leaves the room and you turn back to luca. now embarrassed, realizing what just happened, you apologize, “sorry about all that. he was hitting on me and asked if i had a boyfriend. i lied and said yes, and then he didn’t believe me so i had to go kiss you” you chuckle awkwardly.
“if we’re being totally honest here, i didn’t necessarily hate it.” luca smiles shyly, scratching the back of his neck nervously. your eyes open wide, and your cheeks run hot. thankfully the room is dim so he can’t really see them, or so you hope. “w-what?” you say, immediately dumbfounded.
“you heard me, y/n,” luca says, taking a sip from his cup. your heart rate increases and you’re at a loss for words. luca can see how he’s made you nervous, and usually the golden retriever boy would be panicking but the alcohol in his system is telling him otherwise. “did you hate it?” “no.” you blurt out, afraid he might take back his statement from a few seconds ago.
“good.” he says before pulling you back in. you guys both taste like different alcoholic drinks, and smell a little bit like sweat, but who cares. after a little bit of making out, ignoring all of the people surrounding you both, you both pull back and just smile. “so, you have any interest in being my actual boyfriend?” “hey! i thought i already was!” luca jokes, making you playfully hit his chest.
“i’d love to be.” he says, wrapping his arm around your shoulder. you lean into his side, and he presses a soft kiss into your hair. you both go do a shot together to celebrate the impulsive idea, both knowing damn well that the sober versions of you guys will be so confused, yet so happy.

Everybody Hurts
Chapter 4

You pushed open the door to the small cafe, breathing in deep, letting the smell of cinnamon and coffee soothe you after a restless night. Millie glanced up from behind the counter, a wide smile crinkling the corners of her eyes at the sight of you standing in the doorway. She lifted a hand, waving you over, already pulling a warm cinnamon roll from the bakery display.
“I told you that you’d be back,” she teased, placing it in a bag and on the counter.
“You did and you were right. Best cinnamon roll I have ever tasted, hands down,” you laughed, pulling your wallet from your purse. “It was the first thing I thought about when I woke up this morning.”
Well, that wasn’t entirely true but you’d rather not admit that you’d been thinking about something else that was almost the same shade as cinnamon alright, but it wasn’t a baked good. It was those eyes, intense and burning, challenging your own across the flames. You didn’t even want to admit to yourself how much he’d managed to get under your skin, crawling and burrowing deep.
“You want a latte to go with it?” asked Millie.
“Yes, please,” you responded, impressed that she remembered your drink of choice after one time considering how many orders she must handle in a day.
“So, did you get to explore much of our town yesterday?” the sweet lady questioned as she foamed the milk for your coffee.
“I did, actually. I went to the library and grabbed a couple books and then I went down to the lake for a bit. I stopped into the Hawkins diner to grab a late lunch and wound up making some new friends.”
“Well, that’s wonderful,” beamed Millie, slipping a sleeve onto the paper cup and handing it over to you, her fingers darting across the keys of the cash register to ring up the sale. “And who are these new friends?”
“I don’t know if you’d know them…”
She laughed, waving her hand dismissively in your direction, “Darling, I have lived in this town my whole damn life. There isn’t anybody I don’t know within the town limits. Where do you think they all get their coffee from?”
“Oh…well, I met Max Mayfield at the diner and she invited me out to a bonfire with her friends at the lake last night. There were a whole bunch of people there. Umm…there was Robin, Steve, Mike, El, Lucas, Argyle, Jonathan, Nancy, Will, and this guy named Eddie.”
Your cheeks blazed hot as you spoke his name and you found yourself once again questioning why. It was like you had no control of your body’s reaction to even the mere mention of him.
Millie’s lips flattened against one another and she nodded, “You met yourself a nice group of people then. I get pizza from Argyle’s every single Friday night. Boy could use a hair cut but he makes a mean pie. Who ever heard of pineapple on pizza? But I’ll tell you, he knows what he’s doing. And I take my little Bella to Robin’s grooming place every month for a shampoo and a cut. And Officer Harrington is just the nicest guy. He’s always in here picking up donuts for the station. So, what did you think of everyone?”
You had the distinct impression that Millie was fishing for something specific but what she hoped to catch, you couldn’t be sure.
“Oh, I loved them. They were a great group of people. I thought they were all really nice. Well, most of them were anyway. Eddie didn’t seem to like me all that much.”
“And why would that be? You seem perfectly likable to me.”
“I don’t know,” you admitted with a shrug. “I didn’t do or say anything. I mean, at least I don’t think I did. Well, I may have after he was rude to me but he said stuff first. He was kind of a jerk from the moment he saw me, acting like I was some intruder on his little group and wasn’t welcome.”
“Well, now, you be a little patient with that boy, okay? He’s been through a lot and it’s…well, it’s made it hard for him to trust new people but he’ll come around. He’s a sweetheart, really. He jumped my car for me just a few weeks ago when it wouldn’t start and he came over and helped me clean my gutters last year. My husband, Roy, keeps trying to act like he’s still twenty years younger than he is. He’s stubborn as a mule. He refuses to accept that there are things he just shouldn’t be doing anymore and that man’s gonna kill himself one day. I happened to be complaining about it when Eddie was in here grabbing some coffee and he just offered. Came over that weekend and went up that ladder and took care of it. I tried to pay him but he wouldn’t have it. He did let me give him some cookies though. The people in this town have been unfair to him, downright cruel if you ask me, and it’s not right. That boy’s been through enough. Don’t you go doing it too.”
Your eyes widened, shocked at Millie’s tone, as if you were the one who should be sorry, as if you were the one who’d been so damn irrational. You tried to mesh the image of the rude man you met last night who could barely carry on a civil conversation with the picture that Millie was painting but it was difficult. Based on what the coffee shop owner had told you, Eddie sounded like the nicest guy in the world so what was it about you that made him so damn unpleasant?
“I won’t. I like to come to my own conclusions about people,” you assured her. That was something you’d learned as a teacher. Previous teachers always wanted to laundry list all the bad qualities about a kid but you never wanted to know. You wanted to meet the kids yourself, build a relationship, and make your own judgment calls.
“But he makes it a little difficult when he’s rude for no reason,” you tried.
Millie raised her eyebrows at you and you groaned.
“Fine. I will try to give him a chance but only because it’s you asking.”
Millie smiled, clearly mollified, “That’s my girl. Just for that, I am going to add in a chocolate chip cookie for you to enjoy later.”
“If you keep giving me free treats, you’re never going to get rid of me.”
“Maybe that’s my plan,” the jovial woman laughed. “Maybe I’m just ensuring you stick around for a while. I think this town could be better with you in it and I think you could be better in this town.”
 Your head tilted, a bit taken aback by her statement. “Oh, I think you’re going to be stuck with me for a while, especially now that I’ve found some friends. Speaking of, can I ask you something? You don’t have to tell me if it’s none of my business. I didn’t want to ask Max because it seemed rude with us not really knowing each other that well yet, but do you know why she wears sunglasses all the time?”
“Oh, that…” Millie paused, resting her arms on top of the bakery display. “Listen hon, that’s some ugly business that you don’t need to worry yourself about. That girl got lucky, very lucky that that’s all she was left with. That’s all I’m going to say about that, okay?”
“But…”
The woman held up her hand, “Darling, I don’t like talking about that time. This whole town would just rather forget it. It was a dark time for Hawkins. We’ve all moved on and there’s no point in dredging up bad things from the past that we can’t change. You’re new here and you’re so young and starting fresh after a divorce. Don’t be worrying your head about ugly stuff that had nothing to do with you.”
“Wait. How did you know I was divorced?” you asked, almost certain you hadn’t mentioned it yesterday.
“Young girl starting over in a new town? Hiding here for four months before you finally unveiled your pretty little face to us all? Getting all hung up on the mysterious new guy you met last night? Please. That has all the markings of a relationship gone wrong and a girl trying to find her place in the world again, to get a second chance.”
“I…what…mysterious guy…Millie, all I said about Eddie was that he was rude and didn’t seem to like me. I am not hung up on him.”
“Maybe so but he’s also the only one that made your face go bright red when I asked you what you thought.” She reached across the counter, patting the top of your hand with a wink. “Listen, I think it’s wonderful. That boy needs a good girl. He needs someone to love and someone that will love him, treat him with kindness. He’s been alone for far too long.”
You snatched your hand back, “Whoa there. It’s nothing like that. I just met him and trust me, he didn’t seem like he was looking for anything romantic or anyone new period. I believe he even stated that he has no need for new friends.”
Millie snorted, rolling her eyes, “Of course he did. I’m calling it right now. You two will be in here getting your morning coffee together within the month. I can tell attraction when I see it and it’s written as plain as day all over your face.”
“You’re wrong, Millie. There is not any kind of attraction going on,” you argued, shaking your head and grabbing your breakfast, suddenly eager to get out of the cafe and away from the woman who seemed adamant to hook you up with the one person who didn’t seem keen to even breathe the same air as you.
“We’ll see about that,” she sang, wiggling her fingers at you as you hurried out the door.
____________________________________________________________
You had never been so relieved to see your house, something you thought you’d never think after spending months cooped up inside it. You strode up the walkway, trying to push all of Millie’s words out of your head. It was all you’d been able to focus on during the walk home, almost walking into a car you didn’t see, the driver honking angrily at you.
That woman didn’t know what she was talking about. She didn’t even know you. She couldn’t see your attraction to Eddie written on you. It didn’t work like that and it didn’t matter anyway. You had no intention of pursuing anything with a guy whose mood was as pleasant as being stuck in bumper to bumper traffic on the freeway when you really had to pee.
You stepped up onto the front porch of your house, the warm cup of coffee between your hands. You pulled your cardigan tightly around yourself. The May morning still held onto the chill of the previous night, the day not quite warming up yet. The sun was shining bright, the sky a bright blue that promised a pleasant spring afternoon. The puffy white clouds, gathered in heaps, reminded you of marshmallows, quickly bringing your thoughts back to last night.
There was definitely something strange going on in this town, something strange with that group. Lucas’s response, that they’d all been through a lot, felt like a collective answer about something specific. Dustin and Robin had gotten very weird when you asked what they’d all been through. And yeah, everyone went through shit and you couldn’t begin to imagine the hardships Robin had gone through, but you couldn’t shake the feeling that it was more than that. It felt like they all got together every year on that beach because of something they’d all dealt with together, something dark and ugly as Millie had described it. Hadn’t Max begun to say something at the diner about it being more than just a celebration of spring arriving and then cut herself off?
That wasn’t to say that, strange or not, you didn’t enjoy all of them. You did, very much so. They had been so kind, welcoming you into whatever kind of private celebration they were clearly having. Everyone had been so sweet and friendly and seemed more than happy to have you join their little party on the beach. Almost everyone at least.
Your eyes fell on your coffee, a pair of eyes the same shade flickering through your mind, haunting you, just the way they had last night as you had lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, waiting for sleep that just wouldn't come. You’d spent most of the night tossing and turning, your brain replaying every little interaction you’d had with the grumpy mechanic, getting more and more irritated with yourself for even caring.
And why did you care? You’d just met him. This Eddie guy was nothing to you. So, why were you letting him consume your thoughts, steal your chance at a good night’s rest? It had been a fun night if you took him out of the equation. Why were you allowing him to ruin it for you, to become the one thing you could focus on out of the entire evening?
It was those eyes, damn it. They’d looked at you with such hardness and disdain but then a moment later had melted into this warmth that had seeped into your skin, flowing through to the tips of your fingers and toes. And something else…behind the bravado, the arrogance, there was something haunted about him, something hurting.
You would swear there was a pain just beyond the obvious annoyance. There was more to that man than met the eye, things he was trying to keep buried deep, covering them with his attitude. It felt like he was trying to hide in plain sight, to protect himself but you didn’t know what from and honestly, why were you making it your problem to fix? It wasn’t. He wasn’t your problem.
You rested her forehead against the post of your front porch with a groan. Jesus, what were you doing? You didn’t know anything about this guy. You were allowing Millie’s words to infect you, to contaminate you. You were probably making shit up in your head to excuse why he’d been such a dick to you when the answer was probably so much simpler than that. He just didn’t like you. He didn’t like some newcomer crashing their little party and why should he? You’d had no right to be there, not really, especially if it had always been their thing.
Alright, enough of that. You had just stopped obsessing over one guy, trying to break down every gesture and comment to figure out the internal workings of his mind and how he could do the things he’d done. You sure as hell weren’t going to start obsessing over another one. That was not part of the new you, new life plan.
Eddie didn’t like you, plain and simple. And yeah, he was sexy as hell, heartbreakingly beautiful actually, in a very annoying and infuriating kind of way, but he was still just a guy and not a very likable one anyway.
Even if he’d sat outside your house to make sure you got in safe, that didn’t mean anything. He probably just didn’t want to have to explain to his friends if you’d gone missing or been murdered in your garage and he’d been the one to take you home. Wouldn’t want to be the last one seen with you, the number one suspect when the cops started asking around.
“Ugh!” you growled loudly, rolling your head, a satisfying pop loosening your stiff neck from your restless night. No. You were not going to do this. You didn’t give a shit why he didn’t like you. It didn’t matter.
It was Sunday and by the looks of it, it was going to be a beautiful day. You stepped down off the porch, turning to face the house. You took inventory of your space, trying to paint a mental image of what you wanted for the spring and summer. Lots of vivid bright colors to brighten up your days, a full garden to keep you busy and give you something to fill your time over summer break that was now only a handful of weeks away. You would go to the greenhouse and get some plants. Nothing like some physical labor and getting dirt under your fingernails to get out of your own head and back to reality.
The only problem was that you didn’t have a car yet and there was no way you were going to be able to haul all of those plants back on your bike. Did you really want to make multiple trips, buying only a couple things at a time? You pulled your cell phone from your pocket, flipping it open, scrolling through the numbers that your new friends had punched into your phone last night.
You considered calling Steve for a moment but quickly dismissed it, not wanting to give him the wrong idea if he’d been leaning in that direction even slightly. The way he’d wiped the marshmallow from your mouth, his thumb lingering over your lips, made you think he just might. You definitely didn’t need that kind of complication in your life right now. You scrolled back up to Nancy and pressed the call button.
“Hello?” she answered after three rings.
“Hey, Nancy. It’s me.”
“Oh! Hi!” Nancy sang happily as if your call was the best thing that had happened to her today. It bolstered your confidence a bit, having felt just a tad presumptuous for calling her, for assuming she might want to hang out after meeting you once. “What’s up?”
“Well, I’ve been meaning to get some plants for my garden at my new house and it’s supposed to be a beautiful day. I was thinking about running to the greenhouse, but then I remembered that I don’t have a car. Kind of hard to haul a bunch of plants on a bike. I was wondering if maybe you’d want to tag along and possibly be my transportation? I know it’s kind of last minute and it’s kind of a big ask for you to donate time on your weekend. If you’re busy, I totally understand.”
“No. I’m not busy at all,” Nancy laughed. “Jonathan and I are just laying here in our pajamas being bums this morning. We’ve got nothing going on today. That sounds like fun, actually. A lot more fun than hanging here with him and his friends later. You want me to call Robin? We could grab some lunch or something and make it a girls day!”
“Oh…yeah, I would love that. That sounds great,” you grinned, pleasantly surprised at how excited you were. After months of wanting nothing more than to curl into a ball and be alone, you were genuinely looking forward to spending time with people.
“Okay. Give me just a bit to get ready. I’ll shower and call Robin and then we’ll come pick you up. What’s your address?”
“Oh, it’s 444 Euclid.”
“Seriously? You’re right around the corner from us!” Nancy shrieked happily. “We’re practically neighbors. Alright, I should be there around eleven. Does that work?”
“Yeah, that’s perfect.”
You hung up, that feeling from yesterday creeping in again. That feeling that was eagerness for the day ahead that you hadn’t felt in so long. No more going through the motions of eat, work, sleep for you. You had friends now. You had plans. You had a to-do list that was growing longer by the day, things you wanted to do to make this place your own. This was definitely the beginning of a new chapter and you found you were excited for what life had in store for you for the first time in a year.
___________________________________________________________
“Thank you so much,” you told your new friends as you sat on the front porch, enjoying lemonade, a well deserved break after some hard work in the afternoon sun. “This would have taken me forever by myself. I can’t wait to see what this looks like when everything finally starts to bloom.”
It had taken you a few hours of sweaty, dirty work but you finally had everything planted in the garden. You had not expected Nancy and Robin to help you with the planting. You’d figured you would go to lunch, head to the greenhouse, and then they would drop you off and you would spend the rest of the day working in your garden. But they’d insisted and you hadn’t been ready to be rid of their company so you’d agreed. It had been far more fun that it would have been alone.
The three of you’d had a very nice lunch at the diner, chatting with Max in between her taking orders and serving other customers. You were somehow now going roller skating with everyone on Thursday. You were taken aback by this group’s instant acceptance of you, how easily they included you, but you were also incredibly grateful for it, knowing you needed to actually start living your life if you were going to start having one.
At the greenhouse, you had strolled along every aisle, Nancy and Robin extremely patient as you looked for plants of various colors that would give you the vision you wanted so badly. You’d bought a couple of large hostas that would be a pale blue, some Black Dragon coleus that would be a deep burgundy color, pink Hollyhock, blazing orange Day Lilies, bright yellow Black Eyed Susans, and some Butterfly Weed. You’d also bought two large pots for your porch and some purple Coneflowers for those. A couple bushes to frame your porch and you were feeling almost giddy at the picture that painted itself in your mind, what your house would look like in another month when everything started really growing.
This place was finally starting to feel like your own, a place you could see yourself settling in for the future. A sense of peace and tranquility fell over you as you sat on the porch with your friends. This was your safe space in the middle of the chaos that was life. This was a space that could be filled with love and happiness in the future, a space that could be filled with friends, a space that could be the site of memories you would remember far into the future.
“No problem,” Robin replied from where she sat on the floor, her back resting against the brick of the porch, raising her glass slightly. “Here’s to us kicking ass and getting all this work done in one afternoon.”
“I will definitely cheer for that,” you agreed, leaning forward in the swing to clink your glasses carefully. “Seriously, I would probably be working on this until dark if it weren’t for you two. Possibly still working on it through next weekend.”
“Well, we are pretty amazing,” Robin grinned.
You smiled, “You will get no argument from me.”
Nancy tilted her head, “I can’t wait to see what it looks like when everything starts to bloom. This house is really cute.”
You leaned back, taking a sip of your lemonade, smiling softly. “I really do love this house. This swing is actually what clinched the decision for me. Maybe a stupid reason to buy a house. I know it needs some work. It’s a bit of a fixer upper for sure but it has so much character and honestly, I’m looking forward to the manual labor. My brain could use the distraction for a while, especially with weeks of nothing but endless days ahead of my soon once school lets out.”
“I’m sure,” Nancy commented, her tone gentle, not pitying but empathetic. You were thankful for that. You’d run to Hawkins to get away from all the pity. You couldn’t bear it if your new friends started looking at you like that too. “I can’t even imagine what that must have been like for you. To find out your husband is cheating is bad enough but with your best friend? What kind of friend does that?”
“Not a very good one,” you replied, tugging on the edge of your sweater. “I thought she was. I mean, Cassie and I had been friends since tenth grade, since I first moved to Galena. She was the first person who was friendly to me, you know? I walked into my first class, Geometry, nervous as hell because it sucks being the new face, wondering if anyone is going to talk to you. The moment I sat down she was asking me all kinds of questions about myself and rambling about her life and it didn’t stop all morning because we wound up having every single class together. Cassie always said it was kismet. We were platonic soulmates or something, destined to meet and be in each other’s lives forever.”
“Sounds like you and Steve,” Nancy laughed, looking knowingly over at Robin.
“Yeah, besides the fact that he’s not a woman so completely not romantic territory for me, Steve is pretty much everything else to me,” Robin agreed with a chortle. “I couldn’t stand him in high school. Oh, he was awful. He was such a prick. So many dumb girls were always hanging all over him, desperate for any small ounce of attention the King would bestow on them.”
“Hey!” Nancy shouted, looking offended.
“Sorry, present company excluded, obviously,” Robin snorted dramatically with a roll of her eyes.
“Wait…you and Steve?” you asked, shocked though you didn’t know why. You didn’t know these people that well but honestly, you could see it. Nancy looked like the kind of girl that would have dated a guy like Steve Harrington back in high school. Hell, you had been the kind of girl who dated a guy like Steve Harrington in high school.
Nancy’s cheeks flushed, her lips pressing together as she shook her head, “Yeah, my sophomore year into my junior year. I was over the moon that Steve ‘The Hair’ Harrington wanted to give me the time of day. I felt like the chosen one, like I’d won the boyfriend lottery. All the girls were so jealous of me because I had managed to snag the King. But uh, it didn’t end up working out, obviously.”
“Why not? I mean, if you don’t mind me asking.”
“I don’t mind. A lot of shit went down,” explained Nancy, her eyes squinting as if she were having to think far harder about the answer than she should have. It seemed like a fairly simple question. Relationships failed all the time. “My best friend, Barb, she went missing and I kind of spiraled out of control. I mean, I completely lost my shit. Jonathan’s brother, Will, also went missing. It was a really ugly time and Jonathan and I grew closer, kind of clung to each other, during it all. Two people who were going through the same thing, shared trauma…at least that’s what we were told. It wasn’t too long before I realized that I’d fallen hopelessly in love with him. I still feel awful about doing that to Steve. It wasn’t the right way to go about it but I realized that as much as I liked Steve, I wasn’t in love with him. You probably think I’m an awful person now, don’t you? Especially after everything you’ve been through.”
“No, I don’t,” you assured her, surprised to find that you meant it. “I mean, you can’t help how you feel. The heart wants what it wants. Love makes you act like a crazy person and do shit you never thought you were capable of.” Honestly, the relationship stuff was the last thing you were  focusing on from everything Nancy had just divulged. “But…your best friend and Will went missing at the same time? Obviously, they found Will. But what about your friend, Barb? Did you find her? What happened? Where were they?”
A flash of agony flickered over Nancy’s face, almost as if someone had pinched her suddenly. She curled her fingers in front of her, examining her nails carefully. You got the impression that your questions were bringing up some very painful stuff for her and you were sorry for that but you couldn’t help the curiosity you felt about what exactly was going on here. Every little snippet of information they gave you only left you with even more questions.
“No…uh, we never found Barb,” she answered, her voice cracking painfully. “There was a lab here at one time. Hawkins lab. Nobody in the town really paid too much attention to it. It was just some big building and no one knew or cared what they did in there. It turned out they were doing some illegal testing and Barb was accidentally exposed to toxic chemicals. They tried to hide the body, to conceal what had happened. The government wanted to cover it all up, brush it under the rug, but it all got brought to light in the end. We had a funeral with an empty casket but at least we had some closure. At least her parents got some closure. They were…it was so hard for them, not knowing, you know? They sold their house to pay for a private investigator. He was actually the one who blew the story wide open.” She cleared her throat. “Umm…and Will…it turned out that he got lost in the woods for a week. He was just a kid and he was exploring and he couldn’t find his way back. But luckily, they found him. He was in bad shape, had to spend some time in the hospital, but obviously he’s okay now.”
“Yeah, they actually had a funeral for him and everything but then miraculously there he was,” Robin added and you didn’t miss the look Nancy shot at her from the side, as if she’d said more than she should have.
“You had a funeral for him when he’d only been missing for a week?” you asked in disbelief. “That seems kind of fast. I mean, people go missing for months, years even, and they don’t do that. Did you all really think there was no hope that quickly?”
“Oh,” Robin squeaked, suddenly looking nervous, as if she realized the mistake she’d just made. “Umm…well, they had the funeral because they thought he was dead. There was a body of a boy who drowned found at the quarry.”
“A body? Whose body?” you demanded, extremely invested in this story.
Hawkins was such a small town. It seemed so quiet here, so quaint and normal. Missing people, government lab cover-ups, and bodies being found was the last thing you’d ever expected to come across when moving here. When Millie had told you this town had a dark past she hadn’t been exaggerating.
“We don’t know,” Nancy interjected quickly. “It was another kid, around Will’s age. But the body was really decomposed from being in the water for so long so it was almost impossible to identify. They just assumed it was Will because he was the only kid missing in town. But then he turned out to be alive and they never could identify who the kid was that they found in the water. Whoever it was wasn’t from around here.”
Your brow furrowed as you listened to the explanation, thinking it sounded insane. Did the people of this town really just believe that a random body was the boy that was missing without any identification done? And what about this random kid that drowned? They just let it go? Where did he come from? He had to belong to somebody. Someone was out there missing their child, never knowing what had happened to him. How had no one come forward to claim him?
This was all beginning to sound like some weird dystopian novel to you: government conspiracies, illegal lab testing, misidentified bodies, cover-ups, Max’s need for sunglasses, Eddie’s story about rabid raccoons attacking him. How did a small town like this have such a sordid past? And why would a government lab set up operations in such a small town unless they were trying to stay hidden? What were they really doing there? Something bigger was going on here, something none of them seemed to want to talk about.
“Hey, what are you doing for dinner?” Nancy asked loudly, breaking you from your dive down the rabbit hole. You looked up to find your new friend looking at you eagerly.
“Dinner?” you asked, trying to follow the sudden change of topic. “Oh, I was probably just going to make grilled cheese or something easy and maybe work on my lesson plans. I didn’t get a chance to finish them at school, story of my life.”
“No, you’re definitely not doing that,” Nancy told you. “Come back to my place with us. Jonathan was ordering pizza for him and the guys and he always orders way more than we need anyway or Argyle just shows up with extra.”
“Thanks, but I really don’t want to intrude again,” you said, shaking your head. “I already butted into your annual friends thing last night and I feel kind of bad about it. I’ll be fine on my own.”
“Oh nonsense,” Robin huffed, rising to her feet. “You are our friend now. You’re not intruding on anything. We’re inviting you. We wouldn’t invite you if we didn’t want you there. The guys aren’t going to care and if they do, screw them.”
“Yeah, screw them,” Nancy agreed with a smile. “We can grab a bottle of wine and go hang out in the backyard if they’re being idiots. Who needs those dumb guys anyway?”
“Okay, if you’re sure,” you relented with a small shrug, not wanting to show how pleased you actually were.
“Of course we’re sure,” Nancy asserted with a smile.
You really didn’t want to overstay your welcome, so to speak. You didn’t want them to get tired of you or think you were clingy. They’d just met you and you didn’t want to come across as needy, even though you really kind of were. Needy for human connection, for conversation, for fun, for something to do, something to fill your time with.
“Let me just clean up a bit and change clothes?” “Sure, take your time,” Nancy told you, sipping her lemonade. “Robin and I will be right here waiting when you’re ready.”
Those words were like a balm to your heart but you’d never tell them that. Hearing that you had people, people who would be there waiting for you when you were ready, was like a band-aid over the wound that had been bleeding out for months. You were ready, more than ready to let it heal over.

“i’m used to driving in some snow, but there’s supposed to be a big storm soon and i’m not that confident in my driving abilities.”
“can’t you walk to campus?” her mom asked over the phone.
“yeah but not to work.” her mom hummed, trying to come up with a solution. a boy appeared in front of her, giving a small wave. “hold on, mom.” she lowered the phone from her ear, giving the boy a questioning look.
“sorry, i was walking by and heard part of your conversation. i’m from canada so i can help you with some snow chains if you want?”
“oh! that’s a good idea! are you free now?” he nodded. “just a sec.” she lifted the phone back to your ear. “mom? i think I’ve got it covered. i’ll talk to you later.” the girls said their goodbyes and hung up the call. “thanks for offering to help. i would’ve cried if i crashed my car,” the girl said, followed by a small laugh. as she started walking, the boy laughed along with her and she had to admit, she liked the sound of his laugh.
“oh it’s no problem. i was just hoping you didn’t think i was some creep listening in on your conversation.” she smiled, shaking her head.
“you didn’t come off that way. though i don’t know you, so i suppose you could be and I’m just a bad judge of character.”
“can i introduce myself in hopes of convincing you I’m normal?” she nodded. “my name is luca. i’m a sophomore. uh, i play hockey and i’m studying sport management.”
“the canadian thing makes sense now, hockey star.”
“well, i wouldn’t say that.” she smiled. “what about you? would you like to introduce yourself?”
“i’m hallie. i’m a freshman, i don’t play sports but i do actually happen to be in sport management too. oh, and im from missouri.”
“i’d say we’re both pretty normal, then.” luca sent her a smile which she easily returned.
“good! because this is my car.” hallie unzipped a pocket of her bag and pulled her keys from inside. “where does one buy snow chains at?” luca just laughed and shook his head, opening the passenger door and climbing into the car.

A/N: Hi guys! This one was supposed to be hell short but it accidentally got super long so I’ve split it in two. Part II is already up!
Part II
There was the boat.
There was Lover’s Lake.
There was Dustin, Lucas and Max looking at you from the shoreline.
And then there was you, cramped into a boat filled with the oddest group of people you had ever found yourself surrounded by. The boat was vastly too small for the five of you, although in truth Steve had only ended up coming along over his insistence that he not be left behind as the ‘babysitter’ once more. Either way, his presence made certain that you were squished quite uncomfortably between the two people beside you; Robin to your left trying her best not to take up too much space, and Eddie to your right seemingly revelling in the contact as he grinned devilishly down at you.
“If you get cold, L/N, you’re very much welcome to snuggle into me,” he said.
“Suddenly the lake is looking awfully tempting,” you responded, causing Eddie’s smile to grow wider as he chuckled lightly.
Your and Eddie’s friendship was a strange one.
It begun like most acquaintanceships do in high school; with a vague awareness of each other’s existence. Throughout high school Eddie had always seemed to be there. Although he was, after all, quite hard to miss with his mountain of hair, his array of tattoos and his incredibly loud personality. It was only when you got to senior year, however, when you actually met him.
Having gone on several life-threatening adventures with Dustin, Mike and Lucas, one could almost say that the experience had bonded you. Even though they were younger and even though they often annoyed you, they were your friends. More often than not your friendship came in the form of driving them around, giving them free access into the pool that you worked at, or defeating monsters with them. And although you would never admit it, you liked them.
The first time that you met Eddie Munson it was in the school parking lot before a Hellfire Club meeting. You were, like usual, playing taxi driver.
The windows of your car were rolled down, a late afternoon breeze rolling through them and wafting through your hair. The radio was on, soft music streaming from it that you unfortunately had not been able to listen to at all on the journey.
“Hurry up!” Dustin cried. “We’re going to be late!”
“Dustin, I swear to god if you say that one more time I will drive all the way home just so you can walk back here,” you responded, finally putting the car in park so that you could turn around and glare at him.
Dustin, as ever, was unperturbed by your gaze.
“Well maybe if you had picked us up on time we wouldn’t have to rush.”
“Well maybe next time I’ll let you drive yourself. Oh wait,” you said as if suddenly in thought. “That’s right. You don’t have a car and you can’t drive. What a shame. I suppose you’ll have to walk.”
“Shut up, Dustin and just get out,” Lucas whined as the boys begun exiting the car.
“Well, well, well,” a voice boomed. “Look who decided to show up.”
Across the carpark sat a black van with a tall, slender figure leaning up against it. A cigarette hung lazily from his lips, his head framed in a mane of curls.
“It’s Y/N’s fault,” Dustin called, pointing to where you still sat in your car.
Eddie let the cigarette drop from his lips, crushing the stub underneath his boot before making his way over to you.
“Aw, Mommy’s dropped you off late,” Eddie said, his voice mocking and high-pitched.
When he finally caught sight of you in your car, you could have sworn that the cocky and arrogant smirk that could usually be found tattooed to Eddie’s face faltered slightly. He paused when he reached the group of boys, his eyes never leaving yours.
You quirked an eyebrow at him.
“Alright kids, Daddy’s got you for the next few hours. Play nice with him.”
That was the first time you heard Eddie's laugh.
Once you had seen Eddie it was like you couldn’t stop seeing him.
He was smoking in the bleachers whilst you ran track. He was waving at you in the hallway or in the cafeteria. He was sauntering into Family Video when you were visiting Robin and Steve on their shift. He was mucking around in the pool whilst you were working; possibly the most annoying instance in which you had seen him since you constantly had to tell your boss that, no, he was not actually drowning.
“You’re looking a bit bored up there, L/N,” Eddie had called up to you where you sat on the lifeguard stand. “You better keep a close eye on me. You never know when I’ll need to be saved.”
“Why don’t you put some more sunscreen on, Munson, you’re reflecting the sun,” you had responded.
Eddie had barked out a laugh and you had tried to hide your smile.
“Only if you help me put it on!”
On every day that you had been begged by Dustin, Mike and Lucas to drive them either to or from their club, Eddie had been there as if he had been waiting for you. And maybe—just maybe—the thought of him being there made you just a little more willing to play taxi driver more often. He would be leaning on his van or lingering around the school’s doors, often a cigarette perched between his lips. He would saunter over to your car as it pulled into the car park, hair bouncing as he strutted quickly with his long legs.
“Thanks for dropping the kids off, honey,” he would drawl, leaning against your car window so that your faces were inches apart.
“Well you do have custody on Wednesday afternoons, darling,” you responded mockingly.
Eddie let out a shocked gasp.
“Since when did we have split custody. Are we…divorced?” He beat his fists into his chest, pretending to be wounded from a shot. You laughed at him and he smiled back.
“Are you two done flirting or are we going to have wait out here all afternoon before we defeat some monsters?” Dustin called from where the boys stood by the school’s doors.
A blush crept up your features as Eddie’s gaze turned quickly away from yours.
“You better get that attitude in check, Dustibun, or you’ll have to beg Harrington to give you a lift home!” you shouted back.
When you looked back, Eddie was no longer leaning against your window, no longer even facing you as he stared at the boy’s entering the school. There was an awkwardness that hung between you now, it was practically palpable as the both of you remained silent.
“Well, sweetie, have them out by eight or you can drive them home,” you said, trying to clear some of the tension. When Eddie turned back to you his signature smirk was back.
“No promises. It can get a bit hectic in there.”
“Fine, eighty-thirty at the latest, I have work tomorrow. And don’t give them any sugar it makes them all hyper on the way home.”
“No promises, either on that one, honey. You know I’m the fun parent.”
You laughed, flipped him the bird, and drove off. Looking at him in the rear-view mirror, you couldn’t help but think over Dustin’s words. Sure, there was a fun banter that had always existed between you, but that didn’t necessarily mean you were flirting. But then again, maybe the idea of flirting with Eddie Munson wasn’t the worst thing in the world.
But then there had been the death of Chrissy Cunningham and the disappearance of Eddie Munson. There had been Steve pulling up to your work and demanding that you leave your shift early. There had been the long drive out to Reefer Rick’s cabin and the hasty filling in that Dustin had done on the drive there.
It was happening again you quickly realised. All the times you and your friends had gone on near-death adventures to rid Hawkins of whatever evil plagued it and it was happening again.
When you had seen Eddie in the boat shed you had almost wanted to cry. Sure, he was holding a broken beer bottle up to Steve’s neck and you were partly concerned by that. But it was his appearance that had you so rattled. There was no confident smirk, there was no easy-going stance. There was nothing of the laid-back and boisterous Eddie Munson you had grown to know.
The boat had been the first time Eddie had felt like himself again. There was a banter between you again, and although it was brief, at least it was there. So when the compass had begun to spin incoherently and once it was clear that your lead had come to an end and there was only one possible next step in the mystery, it was an easy decision for you to volunteer. After taking one look at the hesitant and scared look on Eddie’s face, you didn’t even think as you tore your top off.
“What are you doing?” Nancy said before seeing the bathers underneath your top.
“Steve picked me up from work, remember? I’m the best equipped to go for a little swim,” you responded, looking down at the pitch-black depths of the lake and ignoring the feeling of uneasiness that ran through you.
“You can’t go down there!” Eddie protested.
“Aw, Eddie, don’t miss me too much while I’m gone,” you said, jokingly. Eddie’s face remained serious. “I’ll be a few minutes tops. Plus I can hold my breath longer than any of you so I’m the logical choice to go. I’ll find the gate and come right up.”
Just before you took your pants off you glanced around at the people cramped onto the boat and thought better of it. Sure, everyone here had seen you in your work bathers numerous times, but now it just seemed wrong to strip down in front of them.
You glanced down to Eddie who was staring right back at you.
“Don’t get too excited, Munson. If I take anything else off I’ll have to start charging.”
A wide grin spread onto Eddie’s face as a laugh erupted from him.
You smiled at the sight of it before diving into the lake.
The water was freezing, so absolutely cold as it completely engulfed you that for several seconds you just remained still in the water as your body began to adjust. Reluctantly, you forced yourself to swim, the light from the torch Steve had wrapped in a plastic bag barely penetrating the water before you.
It took you longer than you would have liked to find the gate, although in hindsight you weren’t quite sure how you missed it. The glowing, pulsing mass sat at the bottom of the lake just where you thought it would be. For just a second you thought you saw something moving behind it, but then the shadow was gone and your lungs were desperately burning.
Pushing off the bottom of the lake, you let yourself drift to the surface.
“Oh, thank god,” Eddie sighed when you finally re-emerged.
“Miss me, darling?” you drawled, earning a quirked eyebrow from Robin. You turned your gaze away from her, suddenly aware that she had never seen you converse with Eddie before.
“You were down there for way too long,” Nancy chastised.
“Did you find the gate?” Steve immediately questioned.
“I sure did,” you responded. “Right where it was supposed to be. It was just as red and gross as the usual ones.”
“The usual ones?” Eddie questioned.
“Well yeah we've seen-”
Before you could finish, something grabbed a hold of your ankle and instantly pulled you down below the surface of the water once more. It happened so quickly and so abruptly that you didn’t really have time to scream, didn’t have time to escape, didn’t even have time to take a breath of air as your lungs instantly began burning again.
Instead all you could do was allow yourself to be pulled through the water, for no amount of kicking at the thing around your ankle lessened its grip. And just as the burning in your lungs had begun to grow unbearable, just when the thought of drowning crossed you mind, you were suddenly flung upwards into empty space and deposited onto a hard surface. You coughed and wheezed as water erupted from your throat, quickly gasping in air.
It was the inhuman screech from nearby that had you crawling to your feet, ignoring the pain that remained in your chest as you forced yourself to take in your surroundings. You were back in the Upside Down, that much was evidently clear from the storming red sky and the eerily dark surroundings. But the creature that was flying towards you was something new, something you had never seen before. It reminded you of a bat, but before you had time to dwell on its appearance it was coming right towards you, its teeth bared.
You dodged its attack by swerving to the left. But then there was another, and then another, all of them swooping towards you as you tried to dodge them. It was only a matter of time before one of the creatures managed to dig their fangs into your skin. You screamed out in pain, punching it in the head before another one swooped and took another bite out of you. When one managed to wrap its tentacles around your neck, you knew you had lost the fight.
You scrambled to the floor, trying to pull the tentacles from around your neck as your gasped for air. The other two bats had free rein of your body now, continuing in their assault as they swooped down to feast on your abdomen. Black spots began appearing in your vision as pain encompassed you. Your attempts at escape were futile as more blood gushed from your wounds, the bats unrelenting as the burning in your lungs worsened.
But just as you had resigned yourself to your fate, just as you came to the realisation that you probably weren’t going to get out of this situation, the tentacles around your neck loosened slightly to allow just enough time for you to gulp in a lungful of air. You were still dizzy and disoriented so that you weren’t altogether sure what was going on at first, but then the screeching of the bats resumed as they took flight once more, abandoning your torso.
At first, the figure before you was blurry; a mass of whirling limbs. But then the more you breathed the more your vision cleared.
“Eddie,” you sighed.
Eddie Munson swung the oar of the boat around him as if it were a baseball bat, hitting each of the creatures one after another until they eventually fell to the floor motionless. It was only when their screeching stopped that Eddie finally dropped the oar from his hands, his breaths ragged and forceful. He didn't waste a second as he knelt down before you, his hands shaking as they hovered above the wounds on your stomach, not wanting to hurt you by touching you.
“God, Y/N. Oh my god, you’re bleeding. Y-you’re…Jesus!” he screamed.
“Eddie,” you cried at his familiar face, clutching at his body until you were propped up against him, your arms held tightly to his neck. He wrapped his arms back around you gingerly, careful to avoid your wounds. You couldn’t help the tears as they rolled freely down your cheeks, wetting the fabric of Eddie’s shirt that was already drenched from the lake.
“Shhh,” Eddie cooed, bringing one of his hands up to rest on the back of your head. “It’s alright. It’s okay, we’ll be okay now.”
You pulled your face away from him and looked up into his eyes.
“Jesus, I thought…I thought I’d lost you Y/N,” Eddie said. Now you could see his own tears welling up in his eyes.
The two of you stayed like that for what felt like hours but what was actually merely minutes, holding each other as close as you could. It was only when the sound of Steve calling your name reached you that you finally pulled apart. At the sight of Nancy and Robin climbing through the gate, a fresh wave of tears erupted from your eyes.
As you pulled away from Eddie to embrace your friends, you didn’t notice as Eddie immediately ripped off his jacket. You only turned back when you heard a tearing noise, your eyes going wide at the sight of Eddie ripping the sleeves off of his Hellfire Club shirt.
“Eddie, what are you-” you began.
“We need to dress your wounds,” he responded.
“Yeah but that’s your Hellfire shirt. Now you’ve ruined it.”
Eddie chuckled. “I can’t believe you’re worried about my shirt. I have like eight more at home. Anyway, you’re bleeding Y/N in case you’ve forgotten,” he said, pulling the fabric away from his arm. His tattoos were exposed now, more than you had ever seen before as the ink trailed along his skin.
“Tis but a scratch,” you said, remembering the film that Steve had made you watch the week before.
Eddie breathed out a small laugh, his breath so close to you as he leaned forward to wrap the dressing around you that it caused goosebumps to line your skin. You winced in pain as he tightened the fabric over your abdomen, bringing your hands to rest on his shoulders as you breathed deeply.
“Sorry,” Eddie whispered, your bodies now inches apart as he fixed the fabric in place. You could feel his fingers dancing across your body, the skin calloused and rough. When the fabric was secure, Eddie pulled away and you had to stop yourself from reaching for him once more.
You watched as Eddie put back on his jean jacket vest before he held out his leather jacket towards you. You looked down at it curiously.
“What-” you began.
“You’re freezing. I can see you shivering,” Eddie responded.
You took the jacket gingerly from his hands before hesitantly putting it on. It smelt like him, you realised as you couldn’t help but wrap it tightly around yourself. You looked back up at Eddie who was staring intently down at you, but before you could thank him, Nancy interjected.
“Are you alright?” she asked, bending down to inspect Eddie’s handywork.
“Yeah, I think they only managed to take a pound of flesh. I’ll be fine,” you responded, trying not to wince in pain from every movement.
“We have to move,” Steve said as a symphony of shrieks sounded overhead.

I know this is random but I was reading your why do fools preview of your steve fic (which I love and can't wait for more of), and I was wondering if you could write a blurb about will byers coming out to the reader? I feel like with her being so close to jonathan and the byers family, it would be such a pivotal moment 💕
oh my goodness this idea warms my heart, of course I can — I also would love more requests in this universe before I post the next part (if anyone has some
pairing: will byers x fem!(platonic)reader
set in the why do fools universe (read here) — eventually steve harrington x fem!reader

“I think I like Mike.”
The implication is clear; right as the words pass quietly through his lips, you understand what he means. But almost like he thinks there’s no way you could possibly get it, he feels the urge to clarify. Because in his mind, why would you ever understand? “More than–” he struggles with it. This is much harder than he thought it would be.
Except as he glances towards you, your eyes locking steadily, he knows he doesn’t need to say any more.
“More than a friend.” You finish delicately. And there’s no judgement in your tone, only love.
Will nods. This has to be one of the scariest things he’s ever done: admitting how he really feels. “I’ve never…” he trails, trying to form the right words, “you’re the only one I’ve told.”
And you can’t quite describe it, the warmth that spreads through your chest. It’s almost surreal, thinking about how much he must trust you…enough to be the first person he feels he can talk about this with. Initially, it catches you by surprise. What could you have possibly done to deserve this kind of trust? But in your heart, you know why.
The love you hold for Will Byers is unconditional; he’s the little brother you never had. The little brother you didn’t ask for, but who fell into your life and changed it for the better. Of course, with that came Dustin, Mike, and Lucas, (and later El and Max), as well as an interesting friendship with the one and only Steve Harrington, but you suppose, everything had worked out for the best.
“C’mere.” You gesture to him, arms outstretched and a soft smile gracing your features. “You know I love you right? No matter what?”
You can feel him nearly collapse into you, feeling as he releases a breath of relief. He’s crying, his tears a combination of fear and happiness. They wrack through him in intense waves, and yet paradoxically, his demeanor remains as delicate and fragile as you remember it being. Ethereal.
It brings you peace knowing that he feels safe with you. Because as much as you adore each of the kids equally, (and while you hate to admit it), Will has always been the one you gravitated towards. Something about his timid nature drew you in. From the moment your friend Jonathan introduced you to his little brother, you knew how special he was. With his gentle brown gaze and shaggy bowl cut, he exuded pure innocence.
The first thing you remember about him was how reserved he seemed. Minimal words were spoken in those early months. Until he started to open up. Regardless, he was always a bit of a scared kid, a kid who didn’t have a fair shot right from the jump.
Maybe you just got that. And unlike others in his life, you refused to give up on him, or Jonathan.
“Oh Will.” He’s clinging on to you now, grip tight as he shakes like a leaf. “I’ll always be here for you. I promise.”
He breathes heavily, beginning to apologize profusely. “I’m sorry.” He murmurs. “I was just so scared.”
“Never be sorry for your emotions.”
He pulls back from you, calmer now, allowing you to get a good look at him.
"Never apologize for being who you are." You tell him. "Not to me, not to your brother — not to anyone. You hear me?"
Your tone is delicate, but Will knows just how serious you are. He nods, unable to find the words to thank you, unable to describe the feeling of warmth that has spread through his entire body.
You are a safe haven. You always have been. You always will be.
Will knows what it's like to feel accepted by you, to be loved by you. And he never wants that to change.
"Thank you." He clings to you still.
It's silent and left unsaid, but in your mind you think, always.
I will always be here for you.

Oh hi! Yes, This is something a little new and different, especially for @sjmcrackshipmonth. For Pirate Day my wonderful friend @sassyhobbits and I came up with a little idea, she came up with this wonderful artwork and I wrote a fic and we had so much fun. So, without further rabbling here is my first official Aelin x Fenrys work.
CW: it’s smutty, like really smutty. Secondhand embarrassment
FIND THE ACCOMPANYING ARTWORK HERE.
~~~~~
People told Aelin she was mad for running a tavern in a pirate port, and at times she would have to admit that they were right. Brawls were common, there had been damage to the ceilings from more gunshots than she could count, when things truly got out of hand there was an occasional stabbing. Aelin had threatened carousers here and there herself down the barrel of the pistol she kept stowed away in a dark corner of the counter. But for all its trouble the White Stag thrived under her charge. She could never be idle and a tavern in a pirate port like this was a lucrative business. And it wasn’t like she was without protection.
Rhoe Galathynius was the most prominent merchant in Orynth, which made him a veritable king amongst men. Coin was the power in these waters, and their city on the river thrived under his watchful eye and scheming. So the fancy, looping gold lettering of her family name under the wood carved sign of the rearing white stag hanging above her door let patrons know who they were dealing with. It was an assurance for both her and her customers that serious misdeeds would be met with severe punishment, and that kept people coming to her fine establishment night after night.
Tonight was busy, patrons filling nearly every space they could. It was good for business but it was running Aelin off her feet. Usually she was content to watch from the landing above the main floor or slip through the crowd mingling, leaving the bartending to those she hired. But tonight with a barmaid ill that’s where Aelin found herself—pouring pint after pint, the pockets of her skirts full of coin. The gossip was that a few ships had docked over the past few days, bringing an influx of commerce and bodies to the city. Aelin hadn’t caught the names of the ships, but from the energy the city hummed they must have been successful with their seaborn endeavours.
“Lass, two more!” A man weathered by wind and salt called to her. From the way he swayed he probably didn’t need another, let alone two, she would have to cut him off after this.
Aelin grabbed two tankards from below the bar and filled them with beer from the keg behind her. By the second the flow was slowing, a sure sign she’d need to send Ren down to the cellar for another. His main job was to provide muscle when things got out of hand as pirates and their affiliates tended to do. It was just convenient for her that his muscles were useful for other things as well. When she had a moment to breathe she’d have to track him down.
“All clean,” Luca said, setting down a clean crate of tankards. “And more to wash I see, my hands will be shrivelled as prunes by the end of the night.”
“My apologies, but I’ll be sure to compensate you accordingly,” Aelin took a handful of her green overskirt and shook it enough that the coins in her pocket jingled.
Luca’s eyes lit up as the crate of dirty tankards was set in front of him. “I’ll get these cleaned up right away.”
Aelin smiled then started unloading the clean drinkware that would be dirty again all too soon. She didn’t bother to make the arrangement look tidy, on a night like this no one would notice. Feeling sweat gather on her brow Aelin dotted it away with on her sleeve. It wasn’t a particularly hot night but with the amount of bodies in the tavern and how busy it was, her temperature wasn’t surprising. She was glad of the stray breezes that would brush over her shoulders, bare from the way her blouse draped off them.
“Spare a drink for a poor, weary sailor?”
The question came from behind her, smooth and sensuous, the words were nothing but a tempting caress over her skin. Aelin knew that voice and knew its full intent, even though it had been missing from her tavern for months. As pleased as she was to hear it she made sure her smile was hidden away as she turned around slowly, a hand on her hip conveying her feigned displeasure at being interrupted. This is how they would start the game, and if he played along they would both win.
“Fenrys Moonbeam, what brings your sorry arse into my tavern,” Aelin drawled.
Fenrys’ smile was pure taunt and flirtation. “The rum and the company of course.”
“So the rum takes precedence over the company then?” Aelin said, stepping up to be just a little closer.
“Ah, Princess,” Fenrys said, leaning his elbows on the counter that was still between them and not bothering to hide the appreciative sweep his eyes did over her. “You know what the truth of it is.”
Aelin couldn’t help it, she felt the corner of her lips tilt into a crooked smile. But she also wasn’t about to concede, “Do I, though? Nary a word all these long months, for all I knew you had found a more favourable port and run off with a prettier girl.”
“Prettier than you? I think I’d be hard pressed to find someone as lovely as you, Miss Galathynius,” Fenrys said.
“You’re flattering me for a free drink,” Aelin accused.
Fenrys tipped his head back and laughed. “Is it working?”
There was a thunk as the short glass hit wood, and then Aelin was pouring out a measure of her best rum. “Yes.”
Their fingers brushed as Fenrys took the glass and he downed it. While he was occupied Aelin took the opportunity to peruse over him. First she looked for any sign of injury, pirating had its many dangers but from what she could see there were no noticeable hurts. Fenrys looked good, he always did. His golden sunkissed curls were tied back from his face showing off the perpetual smile that seemed to grace his lips. The blue coat he wore was very dashing, with the cut of it accentuating the broadness of his shoulders. Ever the flaunter he’d chosen a white shirt that dipped low, the white of it contrasting the deep bronze of his skin made deeper from the hours he spent in the sun. He’d been gods’ blessed with handsomeness that could only be dreamed of, and an ego to match. Some found him insufferable, mainly those who lacked a sense of humour or any idea of fun. For Aelin, he was an utter delight.
She was called away before they could continue their conversation, but Fenrys didn’t go anywhere. He lingered at the bar, claiming a stool when one became available.
“The next one will cost you,” Aelin said, wiping down the counter so it looked like she had a reason to stop.
“Always such a hard businesswoman.” Fenrys didn’t protest and dropped two coins on the worn wood.
Aelin slid them off into her and then her pocket. “What will it be?”
“That sweet Perranth wine if you have it,” Fenrys requested.
“You’re in luck, my supplier just brought in a delivery yesterday,” Aelin wasted no time, because she didn’t have it, and poured Fenrys a tankard of wine. Glasses were for quiet gatherings, not an overcrowded tavern where it was likely to be knocked out of an unsuspecting hand and shattered on the floor.
“My thanks,” Fenrys tipped his drink at her.
Aelin left him to his wine and tended to the never ending flow of patrons looking for food and drink. Fenrys just stayed sitting there and making sure to catch her eye whenever she passed by. There was no question as to why he was here.
One evening a year or two ago Fenrys had come in with the crew of the Maeve. That night had been vastly different to this, with Fenrys and his crewmates nearly the only customers for the evening. That had allowed an easier night for Aelin with more than enough opportunity for conversation with the charismatic man—not with the others because they were a sullen and broody bunch—and eventual flirting. As the night wore on, she and Fenrys ended up on a low couch by the fire. Along with his staggering handsomeness, he was also highly entertaining. His ludicrous stories had Aelin’s sides hurting with laughter and he was kind enough to ply her with enough compliments to keep her by his side. And when it was just the two of them left basking in the fire’s warmth and Fenrys leaned in, she’d let him kiss her. Which led to Aelin guiding him up the stairs and to her room where they kept each other company in other ways.
Since then, whenever he was in port Fenrys appeared in her tavern and they spent what time they could together until he was called away to the sea again. His captain was a hard bastard and didn’t see the point to lingering on land. The first mate wasn’t much better. Aelin had more than her fair share of run-ins with Rowan Whitethorn—none of them ending well. Their arguments had become legendary. She was more than sure that she hated him and that the feeling was mutual.
Fenrys couldn’t be more different than those men, vivacious and brash, he was more than enough a match for her when it came to wit. It was hard to find a flaw in the man. With so much in his favour, Aelin was still unsure whether or not she was in love with him. He was gone too often and for too long for any real emotion to take root. But at the very least they were friends, and they had fun. Without Fenrys her life would be far more dull and the unexpectedness of his arrival always gave their trysts a thrill. If he ever gave up seafaring maybe she could love him more than she did. There was a wildness to Fenrys that only the sea could soothe. Life on land just might bore him to death.
Despite the lack of attention, Fenrys remained, his thumb running over a loose nail that was poking out of the wooden counter. Aelin made note to fix that, she didn’t need the complaints of an unobservant patron who hurt themselves or ripped their clothing. She had to commend Fenrys for his patience, a lesser man might have run off by now.
“How has your day been, Miss Galathynius?” Fenrys asked when Aelin stopped near him to pour out a measure of rum for another customer.
“As you can see, I’m very busy tonight,” Aelin told him, watching his eyes shine as he sipped.
He didn’t look away as the tankard lowered. “I can wait.”
Aelin wanted to sigh in self pity, but she didn’t. “It’s going to be a long night.”
“You can bet on it,” Fenrys said, his words a sensual promise.
Aelin passed off the tankard to the patron who gave her the money in exchange, when there was a call for more beer it reminded her of the impending problem. “Make yourself useful and I might think about it.”
Fenrys’ head titled, the beaded lock of his hair swaying. “How so?”
“I need another one of these,” Aelin said and slapped the keg behind her, “brought up from the cellar.”
Finishing off his wine far quicker than it deserved Fenrys got up from his stool. “It would be my pleasure.”
Aelin pulled out the ring of keys that she tucked into the wide belt around her waist and handed them over to the pirate. “Do not cause me more trouble than you're worth down there.”
“I wouldn’t dream of it,” Fenrys said with a wink, fingers grazing over the outside of her palm and up her fingers. Despite the heat of the room and the busy fluster Aelin had worked herself into she shivered. That was the first time they had touched and that soft caress had her craving more.
She didn’t have long to dwell on that as she was summoned again and was more than occupied while Fenrys was gone. Drinks were poured one after the other, bowls of Emrys’ chowder went out from the kitchens, the way this was going Aelin wouldn’t be done until the sun came up. Gods knew if Fenrys would be around that long. Aelin groaned, cursing her bad luck. The one night Fenrys would be assuredly in Orynth she would be run off her feet and too busy and too tired to enjoy his company.
Before too long the Fenrys was back, keg on his shoulder to keep it out of the way of the patron’s heads—very considerate. He stepped behind the counter, easing the fresh beer onto the empty stand and expertly fixed the tap. With his job done Fenrys grabbed himself a tankard and helped himself to the first serving. Aelin didn’t bother to stop him, she just gave him a crooked smile and a playful roll of her eyes. He stayed where he was, even though he shouldn’t. Aelin ignored his antics and grabbed two tankards for her own uses. As she leaned over to fill them with beer a broad hand rested on the small of her back, deft fingers tucking her keys back into her belt. With two tankards full, Aelin straightened, one in each hand, and found her path blocked.
“Out of my way, please,” she huffed and then blew at a loose strand of hair. She had tied a scarf around her head in an effort to keep her hair out of her face. The flustering conditions and the humidity weren’t helping the intent.
“Where are you going?” Fenrys asked, standing a little taller but not leaving for where he should be as a paying customer.
Aelin took advantage of the space she could, easing through the small gap Fenrys left between his body and the counter, careful not to spill the beer. “To those people in the corner, I promised I’d bring it over once you had done your job.”
She thought she was free and clear when troublesome hands on her hips stopped her progress. “Do I get a thank you for that?”
The annoyed smirk that lacked the needed irritation was already on her face when she looked up at him. Fenrys was a good head taller than her, his face was full of mirth and all but begging for a kiss as he looked down at her. But Aelin wasn’t ready to give into him just yet.
“Have you bathed since making port, or was the allure of my company too compelling?” She knew the answer, she had noticed the lack of braids he wore while at sea, and she was sure his hair was wet when he first walked in.
That smile fell, an affronted look filled his face. “I’m offended that you would assume that, Aelin.”
“I’m offended that I wasn’t worth skipping a bath over,” Aelin told him.
That was enough of a distraction and when Fenrys laughed Aelin took her chance and stepped out of his hold. Over the commotion of the tavern she swore she could still hear his amusement chasing her through the crowd. Aelin set the foaming tankards down and accepted the generous contribution to the establishment in return. Her pocket was starting to get severely weighed down, she might have to duck up to her rooms to empty it into her coffer.
Her return to her task as barmaid was slower than anticipated, many patrons stopping her for greetings and snippets of gossip. Aelin liked to know what was going on in her city so she listened to all of it, tucking away bits of information that might be useful to herself or her father. Rumours were buzzing that the Maeve had been quite successful on its latest voyage and promised more profit. A hoard of treasure maps was cited as the reason. She might have to ask Fenrys about it.
Eventually Aelin made it back to her post and was surprised to see a small woman with dark hair seated next to Fenrys. They chatted, and the woman laughed at something he said, even touching his forearm that rested on the bar. If Aelin didn’t recognise the woman she might have been jealous. The golden, smiling man was not the company her friend preferred to seek out.
“Elide, hello,” Aelin said, resting her elbow on the other woman’s shoulder.
Elide was dressed in a simple lavender gown, nothing gaudy or to draw attention. She preferred an inconspicuous life where she was the one who made the rules. Her family winery in Perranth was her’s once her parents decided to retire. In the meantime she set about proving just how capable she was.
“I was just chatting to Elide about her wonderful wine,” Fenrys said. “Amongst other things.”
Aelin raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”
“There was a request for a barrel to be sent to the Maeve and I had the unfortunate pleasure of meeting the captain who was the only one left on the ship,” Elide explained. “Such a sullen bastard. I could barely get three words out of him before he disappeared back into his cabin. Luckily before he did he threw some coins at some boys on the dock and they carried it up the gangway.”
“I don’t know why you don’t find yourself a new captain,” Aelin directed at Fenrys.
The man just shrugged. “He’s good at what he does and I get the benefits. It’s not like I have to talk to him. I leave all that up to Whitethorn.”
“Whitethorn? Isn’t he the one who you threw a glass at that one time?” Elide asked.
Aelin huffed, the sound full of aggravation, and then went back to being behind the counter. “The very same.”
One evening for some reason beyond her, Rowan Whitethorn had graced her tavern with his insufferable presence. Nothing had been to his standards, not the beer, not the music and he had been very vocal about it. Aelin had told him to go elsewhere if the current surroundings were so offensive, he ignored her and chose to stay. When he claimed the beer was cheap and tasted like shit she had lost her temper. She had picked up a nearly empty glass of wine and threw it at him which he had effortlessly dodged, something akin to shock on his face as he watched the red liquid drip down the wall. Her demanding he pay for the damages had been the final straw and with a scowl on his sharp and handsome face he left her tavern. Aelin counted that as a win for her.
“The glass was chipped anyway, it was no loss to me.”
Fenrys looked like he was trying to keep his laughter in and like he was about to say something he’d surely regret.
“Don’t,” Aelin said, pointing a finger at him. “You’ll not say a word if you know what’s good for you.”
Yielding to her request, Fenrys held up his hands, the gold rings on his fingers glinting in the low light. “Understood, Princess. Now if you fine ladies will excuse me.”
He was gone moments later, disappearing into the crowd, but Aelin had no doubt that he would return. Fenrys was far too eager for her company to be dissuaded so easily. There was a call further down the counter for more beer and Aelin saw to that before coming back to her friend who hadn’t left.
“Can I get you anything? On the house of course,” Aelin offered.
Elide gave her a knowing look, her eyebrows raised like she could have been questioning Aelin’s sanity. “What are you doing?”
Aelin felt her own brows narrow in confusion. “Working, as you can see.”
“Aelin, my dearest, most lovely friend,” Elide said leaning forward on the counter. “You have a man here, who is desperate for your company and is more than willing to give you a long night of pleasure, and you’re passing out beers instead?”
“I don’t exactly have a choice here,” Aelin said. “Essar is ill, and you can see how busy we are. I’m not exactly the shrewd business woman I claim to be if I ignore it to take Fenrys to my bed.”
As a timely reminder yet another patron asked for a pour of wine and rum, Aelin saw to it as quickly as she could. Luck was not on her side this evening, at this rate she’d be too tired to do anything once she fell into bed.
“I won’t say that you won’t owe me for this,” Elide said, standing up from her stool, “because you will.”
“What are you…”
With quick fingers Elide braided her hair back, securing the end with a dark piece of ribbon. “Show me where everything is.”
It took Aelin a moment to catch on, her face going slack before she grinned. She showed Elide where everything she might need was, going over it twice more for her own peace of mind than her friend requiring more clarification. Aelin also made sure to inform the other’s working tonight so there wasn’t any confusion as to why Elide was behind the counter.
“Keep the tankard tilted, helps limit the foam and unhappy customers,” Aelin explained and the amber liquid rose higher as she gave a hands-on demonstration. “And I think that’s all you need to know.”
“I think I’ve got it,” Elide said.
“And if you have any trouble, call for Ren. He’ll sort it out,” Aelin added.
“Aye, captain.” Elide flourished that comment with a salute.
“What’s going on here?” Fenrys’ voice cut through the conversation.
“I need to deposit some of tonight’s earnings in my room,” Aelin said, sauntering around to the other side of the counter, a hand raising to even out the collar of Fenrys’ jacket. “Care to join me?”
His dark eyes flashed as he easily read the implications of her invitation. “Lead the way.”
Aelin took his hand, leading him through the crowd to the staircase in the corner. The crowd took up the shanty that was being played. When they passed the small gathering dancing in front of the musicians Fenrys spun her and moved with the music, but still kept them heading towards their destination. Reaching the wooden stairs, Aelin gathered her skirts in her free hand to prevent herself from tripping as they hurried up the steps. On the landing they went left, the right led to a halfway with a handful of rooms she let out. Her private ones were larger and more secluded, the balcony on the outside offering beautiful views of the river port. That door painted a rich green was the last obstacle between her and what she wanted. And in just a few more steps she would be there.
Fenrys was a heavy and welcome presence behind her as she worked on unlocking the door. His hands were on her waist, his lips on the bare skin of her shoulder, it was enough of a distraction that Aelin was struggling to secure the key in the lock. That was only made worse when those godsdamned hands slipped higher, pressing over her bodice until they cupped her breasts. That had Aelin arching onto him, and in return that had Fenrys squeezing before his hands travelled downwards again—fingers catching on the neckline of her blouse. She was desperate to feel those hands on her with nothing to hinder them.
“Fen,” Aelin whispered harshly. He just hummed his response onto her skin. “I would very much like to open the door so that we can continue this more privately.”
“My apologies,” he said, low enough that it had her skin pebbling.
Other than that he let her be, halting his distracting journey over her body. It was a disappointing loss but the sooner Aelin got the door open, the sooner they could start again.
Blocking out everything except the lock and key was the only way that Aelin managed to get the door open. She stepped into the dimly lit space, a single lamp barely glowing on a small table where she dropped her keys. There was a couch and an armchair set in front of a cold fireplace and there was another door that led to a private bathroom. The place could have been tidier, but Aelin hadn’t exactly been expecting guests. Fenrys closing the door redirected her attention, and he all but stalked towards her. To tease and make the trek that much easier, Aelin backed up towards her bedroom. She was caught just as they got to the entrance of it, Fenrys catching her by the waist and cupping her face. The moan at that first press of his lips was undeniable.
For a while that’s all they did, just kiss in the dim light under the doorway. When Fenrys’ thumb dragged down the length of her neck, Aelin got impatient. She angled them so that they entered her room with tangled steps towards her bed. Her hands weren’t idle, searching out what bare skin they could. When there wasn’t much on offer Aelin slid one hand down the centre of his chest, all the way down to palm him through his trousers. Fenrys stumbled forward with enough strength to force Aelin back a couple of steps.
“Still have your sea legs?” Aelin teased through her laughter.
Huffing his own laugh, Fenrys pulled her closer so their noses brushed. “Maybe I’ll be steadier on my knees then.”
Before Aelin could even comment his lips were back on her’s, while his focus shifted to removing her clothes. The belt around her waist was the first to go, then his deft fingers had the laces and buttons of her forest green outer skirt undone and it was dropping over her hips. There was a jingling thud as the coins hit the floor, probably scattering, but that was a problem for later. Fenrys' progress was stalled when he discovered that the laces of her undershirt were hidden beneath her bodice. His groan of frustration was comical, and Aelin would have laughed if it weren’t for the way Fenrys’ hands were playing along the tops of her exposed breasts as his mouth lowered to her neck.
Her body was tugged forward as the laces of her bodice were pulled at. Fenrys struggled, getting clumsier the more desperate he became, and even now Aelin’s patience was running thin. She needed him, now. It seemed Fenrys felt the same because one moment her floral embroidered bodice was tight against her body and the next it was falling away. Confused by the sudden development Aelin looked down to see the metallic glint of a knife and the ribbons in pieces.
“You ruined my laces,” Aelin gasped, shoving the brute back half a step. “You bastard.”
Fenrys just smirked down at her, reaching out to slip the strap of the bodice off one shoulder, “I’ll buy you more,” then he did the same with the other. “The prettiest ribbons you can find.”
Aelin let the useless piece of clothing fall off her arms, Fenrys watching her every movement. She gave him a look that said don’t touch as she saw to the underskirt herself, her untucked blouse falling to the very top of her things. Fenrys’ gaze swept over her from head to toe, once and then twice, his eyes catching on the loose neckline that was revealing just enough to drive him wild. But he didn’t move, just waiting for Aelin to dictate what happened next.
“The prettiest and the most expensive,” Aelin said.
Fenrys nodded, not taking his eyes off her for a second. “Whatever you say.”
She didn’t bother with the buttons of her blouse, instead she just pulled it over her head. When Fenrys reappeared in her vision his eyes were ravenous and his hands twitched at his side, no doubt warring with himself and the need to touch her. Aelin pulled out the head scarf and then she was bare except for the simple underwear at her hips. Her hand draped from her neck, drifting down between the valley of her breasts.
“Do you promise?” Aelin asked, smirking at the man in front of her who looked ready to erupt.
She saw the exact moment his resolve snapped, had her laughing as he rushed forward and gave his breathless answer against her lips. “Yes.”
Aelin found herself seated on the edge of her bed, her senses fleeing as Fenrys kissed her. She was half aware of him shedding his jacket and starting on the buttons of his white shirt. The thought came to her that she should help him so that his hands might be better occupied, but she never got the chance to voice it in the slightest. Because Fenrys dropped to his knees in front of her, large hands inching up her thighs. Aelin shuddered and her underwear was pulled down her legs and thrown away. A single wink was all Fenrys gave before on her.
The first brush of his tongue over Aelin’s core had her gasping, arms quaking where they braced her weight on the bed. Fenrys was one to playfully brag about the wonders for his mouth and Aelin could truly attest to every word. She buried her hand in his curls, ruining the bun he had them tied in, and gave herself over to the feeling of every nip, every press of his tongue. Aelin moaned, loud and unrestrained. It had been too long since someone had made her feel like this. The pleasure built to the point of consuming her when every ministration stopped and Fenrys pulled out of her grasp.
“The hell… what are you doing?” Aelin asked through her laboured breaths. Her heart was pounding, her body screaming to be touched again.
“I’ll never last,” Fenrys said, sounding a little mad at himself. That anger only became more evident as he yanked at his clothes to get them off. If Aelin had the wits she might have helped him, but for now she could only watch as everything was revealed to her. “I have to have you now.”
With his pants gone Aelin could see how much Fenrys meant it. The sight of his cock, hard and ready, had her unconsciously arching towards him with need. Fenrys used that to his advantage, his muscled arm wrapping around her waist and hauling them up the bed. It was Aelin who pulled him in for a kiss and from there she let herself burn.
Fenrys settled on her hips, pressing their bodies as flushed together as they could be. The feel of him was incredible, the weight and heat of his body was something Aelin had absolutely missed. His hands ran over what they could—her sides, hips and thighs—anywhere he could reach without separating them. All the while his hips drove into her’s, the length of him rubbing enough delicious friction to make Aelin dizzy with need. She writhed against him, trying her best to get him to slip inside her, even trying to distract him by biting down on his bottom lip. It didn’t work, for now Fenrys was content to touch her, not surprising considering how long he’d been at sea. Aelin knew a touched starve man when she saw, and had thrown many of them out of her establishment over the years. If this is what Fenrys needed, she would gladly give it to him and surrendered.
One hand ceased its movements on her thigh, fingers digging into her flesh to pull her open just a little wider. Aelin moaned in anticipation, feeling the head of his cock at her entrance. Fenrys continued to tease her, his unoccupied hand pressing into her side and then up, his thumb taking a moment to run hypnotising circles over the side of her breast before heading upwards again. Then he pushed her arm up and extended it above her head, his hand dragging all the way up to meet Aelin’s. It wasn’t until their hands were laced together that his hips thrusted at just the right angle he slid into her. At the feel of him seated so deep Aelin’s body bowed into the sensation instinctually, trying to draw the man above her closer, deeper. It had Fenrys groaning into the skin of her neck as they both took a moment to collect themselves before he started moving.
Aelin had expected it to be hurried and desperate, this was anything but. Each roll of his hips was slow and thorough, enough to make Aelin’s breath catch but not take it away. Maybe Fenrys had the right idea, maybe after being apart for so long he was right to savour this first time. She was sure before morning came they would have time for more than enough rounds to make up for it.
“Talk to me, Princess. Let me know you’re here with me,” he nearly begged in between kisses.
“You feel so good, Fen,” Aelin told him.
“I could say the same.” The thrust that followed that admission was sharper than the others, a sure sign he was slowly unravelling.
“You know how I like it.”
“Like what?” Fenrys asked, voice edged with desperation as Aelin moaned. “How you like what, Aelin?”
He was enough of a bastard that he would taunt and take away what was currently driving her insane until she said it, and Aelin was tired of playing. “How I like to be fucked.”
At her words, the steady pace that Fenrys had set faltered, had his body shuddering. “The things you do to me.”
His hips snapped, the angle perfect. Aelin only knew she needed more. “Gods, I need you closer.”
Fenrys rolled them both, his grip on her arse keeping them intimately connected. Aelin thought he was going to stop then, but she felt one strong thigh bend behind and then he had pushed himself up so his back lent on her headboard. Aelin panted as she sat in Fenrys’ lap, savouring the feeling this position gave her. She wouldn’t last much longer, the coil in her stomach wound with each shift of their hips.
“There you go,” Fenrys said sweetly. “I’m right where you want me.”
“Yes,” Aelin whispered. “Thank you.”
The sass that came out of near delirium earned her a rumbling laugh and lingering kiss, making Aelin’s hips roll on their own accord. That undid Fenrys and he kissed her with more urgency as the hands that hadn’t moved shifted her in his lap dragged her onto him, prompting her to move like that again. Aelin did, her hands on the headboard either side of Fenrys’ head. Once she had her rhythm Fenrys let go of her, but not for long. There was a hand on her breast, the other splayed on her pack to push her closer. The man was indeed desperate for contact, only made clearer by his next request.
“Touch me, Aelin.”
She knew he didn’t mean his cock that was still inside her, there was no way in hell Aelin would be willing to with how close she was to breaking apart. Fenrys was after something softer. Her hands left the headboard, and she touched him like he wanted. Sweet caresses over his face, sweeps over his shoulders. It urged Fenrys to move his hips faster, meeting Aelin in perfect synchronisation. His lips on her neck were not what she wanted, so she angled his face to hers, kissing him fiercely. It was his heady groan on her mouth that had Aelin breaking like a wave, pleasure rushing through every nerve of her body. She nearly screamed from the force of it, they had strung it out so long that this relief was blinding and all consuming, all Aelin could do was keep moving to drag it out as long as she could.
“Fuck,” Fenrys moaned on her mouth, helping her move on him chasing his own pleasure. “Fuck me, Aelin.”
Her over sensitive inner walls felt his cock twitch and then Fenrys was groaning as he came. Aelin kept rocking, wanting to draw it out for the both of them as long as she could. It felt too good to let it fade just yet. The way Fenrys clung to her as he caught his breath was sweet, and as Aelin’s own body calmed she ran a soothing hand over his hair. He hummed contentedly, hugging Aelin tighter against him while his lips wandered aimlessly over her skin.
Aelin chuckled. “Feel better?”
“You are too good to me,” Fenrys murmured onto her skin.
For a while they just sat there, touching and waiting for the other to move. In the end it was Fenrys, kissing Aelin deeply as he lay her down before pulling out. He didn’t bother with pants and Aelin took the opportunity to admire the view. When he was gone entirely she stretched out, feeling sated but willing for more. Aelin missed him while he was away, and it wasn’t just in the bedroom, it was the conversation and companionship as well. And now that they’d had such a gratifying release of tension there was nothing to say that they couldn’t do both at the same time.
Soon enough Fenrys returned, cloth in hand, and moments later they were cleaned up and back in each other’s arms. Aelin lay on her side facing Fenrys, and he did the same, his fingers playing with the ends of her hair. She busied herself with idling tracing the scars on his chest. There were no new pale marks that marred his skin. When she ran her finger over a particularly large one low on his side Fenrys shivered.
“So I hear the Maeve and her crew have fallen into good fortune,” Aelin said.
“That would be true,” Fenrys kissed her forehead before pulling back. “Whitethorn found some maps in an abandoned cave in the Cambrian Mountains. There used to be stories of a creature in the lake that guarded them, so who knows how many years superstition won out. We’ve been more than successful.”
“Good to hear.” It was then that she noticed the blue gem stud in his earlobe. The piercing wasn’t now, Aelin hadn’t seen this earring before. She reached out to flick it. “Is that a sapphire?”
Fenrys nodded his head. “It is. Do you like it?”
Aelin shrugged, and as if she couldn’t help but be drawn to him her body inched closer. “I prefer emeralds.”
“Well,” Fenrys said, voice straining as he used his weight and a hand on her hip to urge Aelin to lie on her back. “Next time I’ll try and bring you some back. Whitethorn usually claims them all first though.”
Aelin scoffed. “Selfish bastard.”
Fenrys’ answer to that was a soft chuckle and an upward sweep of his hand over her body. Instantly Aelin's blood heated again, craving his touch and the release that would inevitably follow. Fenrys read every sign that her body was giving, propped up on an elbow as he watched her try not to writhe. His fingers had claimed the peak of her breast, teasing and pinching until it was hard. When he flicked it Aelin gasped, a hand darting out to hold him by the back of the neck. Then his mouth was on the unattended breast and Aelin gave up fighting her composure.
“You’re not ready yet,” she panted, her body bucking as need pulsed lower.
“Ah, Princess,” Fenrys said, but Aelin barely heard him. She was too focused on the hand that was travelling down her body. “That doesn’t mean we can’t have fun in the meantime.”
The only answer she could offer him was a deep moan as his thumb reached the apex of her thighs, drawing tight circles that were almost too much. Fenrys slowed down, and shifted so that both his hands and his mouth had something to do. When Aelin gasped as his fingers teased her entrance, Fenrys kissed her, his tongue sliding into her mouth. The sensations of his mouth, the hand on her breast and the other between her thighs had Aelin hurtling towards that peak of release. But Fenrys held her there right on the edge, forcing Aelin to open her eyes and look at him.
Fenrys’ dark eyes were full of so many sinful promises that there was no doubt what the rest of the evening would entail. “I made you a promise, Aelin. And I intended to keep it.”
With that declaration his fingers slipped into her, finding that spot and moments later she was unravelling and moaning her pleas to the gods. Aelin was in for a long night indeed.
Soft kisses and wandering hands woke her up the next morning. Her bedroom was barely illuminated by the morning light meaning it must be early. She usually got to sleep late into the morning due to the working hours she kept. But last night it had been Fenrys who had kept her up until the very small hours of the morning. Aelin groaned, this time not in pleasure—at least it wasn’t that way at first. When his hand brushed over her bare breast like that it was hard to maintain her indignation.
“Why are we awake?” Aelin mumbled into her pillow.
Fenrys kissed up her neck. “Still on ship's time.”
He was ready. She could feel the hardness and heat of him pressing into her back. It wasn’t a terrible way to be woken up and Aelin supposed she could sleep later. The White Stag wouldn’t open until after noon anyway. Aelin pushed back into him, but went pliant in his hands, a signal that she was willing to give him the lead this time. Fenrys all but growled, nipping at her shoulder and he urged her onto her stomach.
They were in a tangled mess of sheets and bedding, there was some manoeuvring on Fenrys’ part to free trapped limbs. Opening her eyes, Aelin found herself at the foot end of the bed. It seems they hadn’t bothered to put themselves to bed properly after their escapes the night before. Aelin had simply grabbed a pillow and fallen asleep where she was, the pillow she now tossed away as she was pressed into the mattress. Fenrys ran his hands over her body, stopping at her hips just to angle them how he wanted. The sleep haze fled, and want replaced it, causing a needy whimper to escape Aelin’s lips without her permission.
Fenrys started his trek up her body, his lips leading the way as they trailed up her spine. He brushed her knotted hair over her shoulder and continued to the newly exposed skin. Aelin could feel the heat of his body as he was braced over her now, a hand sneaking its way of the sheets to lay over one of her’s. That little gesture had Aelin smiling, remembering how demanding he had been for small affections last night. This morning was no different.
“I don’t think I’ve told you enough,” Fenrys said by her ear, making her skin pebble. “You’re stunning.”
“You don’t, I want to hear it more,” Aelin snarked back.
Fenrys snorted, making her laugh in turn. “Duly noted, Princess.”
He lined himself up, the swollen head of his cock pressing against her core. Aelin tried to push herself back to take him deeper, but Fenrys held her still, a silent demand to just wait. She did, it might have killed her a little but she did. Then Fenrys slid in with one delicious stroke. Aelin moaned the entirety of it, loving the feeling of having him inside her again.
“You are stunning,” Fenrys whispered, accentuating his words with another thrust. “Absolutely stunning.”
“Fen,” Aelin breathed. “More.”
Fenrys dropped lower, still holding most of his weight himself, and shifted so that they moved in a steady grind. It felt so good that all Aelin could do was let herself be swept away in everything he was giving.
“Stunning.” Fenrys’ breathing was getting harder, the word coming out nearly desperate.
Aelin was about to demand it harder—faster—when her bedroom door was unceremoniously thrown open, hard enough it slammed on her wall. No knocking, no nothing, there was someone else in her room. Fenrys nearly collapsed on top of her, he managed to stop himself before he crushed all the air out of her lungs. Aelin looked up, glaring and ready to spit her best obscenities at the intruder. The unexpectedness of their identity had the words catching on her tongue and her cheeks heating.
Because there, in her doorway was none other than Rowan Whitethorn.
“Shit,” Fenrys said, pushing the sheet her way so she could cover herself. He’s always been considerate like that.
Aelin was the first to recover. “I don’t remember inviting you into my home.”
Rowan ought to be commended for how intently he kept his eyes on her face. “Should have locked your door. Time to go, Moonbeam.”
“Piss off, Whitethorn.” That may have been the first time Aelin had truly heard Fenrys sound angry.
“I gave you orders,” Rowan said, arms crossing over his chest.
Aelin wished she had her pistol, or maybe the dagger in her nightstand, just something to threaten the infuriating man with. “Unless you plan to join us, get out.”
Rowan raised one of eyebrows, the tattoos on his face shifting. “You two should be so lucky.”
Gods, here they were chatting and Fenrys was still inside her.
Fenrys seemed to realise the same moment she did, discreetly separating them and using some of the messy bedding to cover himself. Keeping her eyes locked on the green ones, Aelin took a handful of sheet and held it to her chest as she slowly sat up, not caring what might or might not be covered. From the way that the cold morning air nipped at her skin, Whitethorn was getting at least a little bit of a show.
And right there, Aelin didn’t miss how his eyes finally darted down, just for one lingering moment before he spun around and marching through her living room.
“Now, Moonbeam!” He bellowed over his shoulder as hand racked through his shoulder length silver hair, making sure to slam the other door that opened to the landing as well.
There was a moment of charged silence and then Aelin giggled and fell back on the bed. Fenrys joined in, the intensity of their laughter increasing until they were both struggling to breathe. Fingers on her chin tilted her head to the side to see Fenrys’ dark eyes full of amusement.
“I am so sorry, Aelin.” His voice was still shaking.
Aelin shrugged. “I don’t suppose we could finish up?”
That sobered Fenrys up very quickly. “He’s likely to come back and drag me out naked into the street.”
“That would be quite the end to the story,” Aelin mused like she was considering it.
“You are pure trouble,” Fenrys said, tapping her nose.
Aelin laughed, taking Fenrys’ hand. “I could say the same about you.”
They both knew he had to go, but neither of them were willing to start the goodbye. In the end Fenrys got up with a heavy sigh, picked up his pants and started dressing. Aelin sat up, watching the disaster unfold in front of her. She thought they would have more time—at least today to enjoy themselves together and catch up. It wasn’t to be and it filled Aelin with a sudden feeling of loneliness.
“Hey,” Fenrys said as he tightened his belt. “I’ll be back in no time.”
Aelin nodded. “With my emerald”
With a crooked smirk Fenrys replied, “With your emerald.”
“Even if you have to fight that bastard Whitethorn for it,” Aelin pressed, moving to sit on the edge of the bed.
Fenrys’ hands landed either side of her hips, one last brief moment of closeness. “For you it would be my honour.” He picked up his jacket off the floor, shrugging it onto his shoulders. Fully dressed there was nothing left to delay him and with one final kiss, Fenrys finally said goodbye. “Until next time, Princess.”
Aelin nodded, swallowing against the tightness building in her throat. Fenrys winked then left her room. It was at the final glance of him walking out the deep green door that she finally whispered, “Until next time.”
Steddie Flower Shop / Tattoo Parlor AU
I am so floored by the response! It is absolutely so fun that y’all want to read my silly stories! This is a relatively short update but I am working on the rest! Hoping to post the full story by Valentine’s and I might also post an AO3 link at some point if anyone would like that I Part One I Part Two I Also on AO3!
***
Chrissy and Eddie had been taking bets about what type of business was opening up across the way. Eddie’s guesses had run the gamut from hipster coffee shop to hipster hairdresser to hipster high-end taxidermy while Chrissy had more or less stuck with her original guess of a speakeasy style bar. Eddie was starting to close up shop for the day when some guy in an honest-to-god sweater vest and jeans ran over.
“It’s too late to place any orders today. Sorry if you need to apologize to your wife and 2.5 kids and forgot until the last minute.” Eddie had to admit the guy was pretty infuriatingly handsome. If you were in to normie core, that is.
“What? I’m not- okay, uhm. I’m actually here because I just rented the place across the way and I wanted to ask about setting up a recurring weekly arrangement?” Steve asked.
“What?” Eddie yelled over Judas Priest.
“It’s a wonder you can ever hear anything over all this noise.” Steve gestured towards the speaker.
Chrissy had overheard the exchange from the backroom and cut Eddie off before he could start ranting about real music, “Yes, we are interested in setting up a recurring weekly bouquet arrangement for our new neighbors, Eddie.”
Chrissy turned back around to lower the speaker's volume and pulled Eddie and Steve into the shop and onto stools by the workbench Eddie uses for arranging. Eddie glared at her but they’d just lost one of their regular accounts to some online service that was apparently way cheaper than what De Lucas’ could offer.
“Sure. What were you thinking, dude?” Eddie asked Steve.
“Just something nice for our front desk. Not too big and maybe nothing that people are commonly allergic to? But I’ve seen the arrangements you load up for delivery and I trust your eye. I’m not a live flower expert.”
“Of course, big boy.” Eddie noticed Steve flush a little bit at the pet name. Eddie reached behind Steve to grab one of the flyers Chrissy had made for company floral services. He purposely invaded Steve’s space a little more than necessary just to see if he could get the guy to flush a little deeper.
“Uhm, thanks, man. I’ll get out of your hair since it’s late. Sorry.”
“I’ve got time for you now if you want to talk through anything,” Eddie couldn’t resist biting his lip a little bit. Steve was apparently very easy to ruffle and Eddie sure did love antagonizing his hipster neighbor. “Tell me a little bit about your place?”
“Oh, yeah, it’s a tattoo studio? Just me and my friend’s helping run the, like, business part of it.” Steve responded
“You tattoo?”
“Yeah. Really fucking well actually,” Steve pushed back. It seemed like Eddie had hit a nerve.
“Shouldn’t you have like at least one tattoo?” Eddie’s brain to mouth filter had apparently stopped working. He shouldn’t be actively shitting on a potential customer.
“Who says I don’t?” Steve answered with a wink. It was Eddie’s turn to feel a little faint as his imagination took a little too much creative liberty thinking about where Steve’s tattoo might be.
Thankfully, Chrissy took the awkward silence as an opportunity to step in and work with Steve to confirm what level of floral arrangement he was looking for, how often he wanted a new arrangement, and if he wanted pick up or delivery.
“I can stop by and pick them up. Wouldn’t want you to go through the trouble of adding me to your schedule since I’m just across the way. Any chance I could pick one up tomorrow around lunch time? My first client is coming at two.” Steve asked.
“Noon’s great, Steve!” Chrissy reached out to shake Steve’s hand while Eddie was still working on slowing his heart rate back to a reasonable rhythm.
“Amazing, thanks so much guys!” Steve called as he headed out of De Lucas’ and back across the street.
“Woah, Eddie. Truly a masterclass in both flirting and getting new clients. I should have taken notes,” Chrissy said once Steve had made it halfway into the road.
“Hey, fuck you.”
“He speaks!” Chrissy patted Eddie’s head and added, “You’ll have to get better at interacting with him since you’ll be seeing each other once a week now.”
Eddie dramatically sighed and laid his upper body across the workbench, getting little pieces of flower refuse stuck in his hair.
“I’m so screwed.”
You wish, babe,” Chrissy cackled as she grabbed her bag and headed out for the day.
The Harrington Pattern Part 4
I know I said I was going to wait on posting this one, but it's got the most backlogged chapters so I figured I can at least put out this one for you.
It's extra long, like amount 1000 words longer than my usual. But I didn't want to stop half way through a specific section.
An elf gets his ears, Robin freaks out a bit, and everyone gets a little called out about their pre-conceived notions, but especially Mike.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
@mira-jadeamethyst @rozzieroos @itsall-taken @redfreckledwolf @emly03
****
The day had arrived and Claudia had offered to help get them all there, as Eddie’s van was full and Robin still didn’t have her license. She was in driver’s ed right now, thankfully. Her parents didn’t want her going to college without knowing how.
So Dustin, Will, El, and Mike went with Claudia and Robin, Max, and Lucas went with Steve.
Dustin had wanted to go with Steve, but it didn’t make sense as his mom was the other driver. So he pouted all the way to pick up his friends, but by the time Claudia had picked up Mike Dustin was vibrating in the front seat.
Lucas was picked up last.
He still didn’t have his ears so he looked crestfallen when he answered the door. He was wearing the pirate outfit he had told Steve he had.
“He’s being a piss baby,” Erica muttered. “Something about ears.”
“Erica Jean!” Mrs. Sinclair hissed. “We do not talk about your brother that way.”
Erica crossed her arms and pouted.
“Actually, Mrs. Sinclair,” Steve said with a smile. “I have a solution, but I’m going to need your help.”
Both Lucas and Erica perked up at that. Steve patted his pocket with a wink.
“Of course!” Mrs. Sinclair beamed. “I told you Steve and Eddie were going to come through for you, didn’t I?”
Lucas blushed. “Yes, Mom.”
“Where do we need to be, Steve?” she asked.
“The bathroom would be the best place.”
She nodded and led the way, Lucas in the middle and Steve bringing up the rear.
Steve sat Lucas on the toilet seat and pulled out the thin box Eddie had given him. He opened it up so Mrs. Sinclair could see it first.
“Ooh!” she cooed. “I know just what we need. I’ll be right back.”
Steve turned around so Lucas could see them.
Lucas gasped. “Holy shit! What are they made of?”
“Silicone.”
“Do we need anything to affix the ears, Steve?” Mrs. Sinclair asked from her bedroom. “I have makeup glue if we need.”
“That’s fine, Mrs. Sinclair,” Steve called back. “I have spirit gum.”
She peaked around the corner. “Oh that’s even better!” She had her makeup bag in her hands.
“Actually Lucas,” Steve said eyeing the makeup bag. “Go change into your costume. I don’t want to smear makeup on your costume or accidentally knock off one of the ears and have to start all over.”
Lucas leapt to his feet and dashed out of the room.
“It was really nice of you to do all this for him,” Mrs. Sinclair told Steve in the wake of her son’s cartoon speed cloud. “It’s really made him feel special. To stand out in a way that feels good for a change.”
Steve smiled back at her. “He’s a good kid. It was great that I got to do something nice for him.”
Lucas came back a few minutes later, a blanket covering his costume. When his mom and Steve raised an eyebrow at him he blushed.
“I was worried about the makeup getting on the costume,” he admitted shyly.
Steve patted his shoulder. “I would have put a towel over it. A mom approved towel. I don’t think she’s going to approve that blanket.”
“Absolutely not!” She took off the blanket and handed them a ratty old towel to drape over Lucas’s shoulders.
“Thanks Mrs. S.,” Steve murmured and got to work. He applied the ears and then swapped with Mrs. Sinclair.
She applied makeup to the silicone to blend them to Lucas’s ears.
“All done!” she said triumphantly.
Steve whipped off the towel and pulled Lucas to his feet. He closed the door so that they could use the full length mirror that was on the back. He put his hands over Lucas’s eyes and gently steered him toward the door.
“You ready?” he asked softly.
“Yeah,” Lucas croaked.
Steve uncovered his eyes.
Lucas stared in the mirror for a moment or two.
“Baby?” Mrs. Sinclair asked. “Do you like it?”
Tears streamed down his face as he nodded. “I’m an elf, Mom...”
She hugged him tightly. “Yes you are, sweetie. And the best looking elf at the fair, no doubt.”
He nodded and then wiped his tears.
“How did you do this?” he asked Steve.
Steve smiled. “Jeff makes them.”
Lucas’s jaw dropped. “Oh.”
Mrs. Sinclair cocked her head to the side. “Who’s Jeff?”
“Mom!” Lucas hissed. “I like talk about him all the time! He’s the other black member of Hellfire!”
“Ah,” she said with a smile. “You talk about so many of those boys, I get them mixed up sometimes. But I’m happy he was able to help my baby out.”
Lucas rushed out to show the girls who gasped and oohed over Lucas’s outfit.
“How much did you have to pay for those, Steve?” she asked gently. “They can’t have been cheap.”
Steve shook his head. “Jeff did them for free because he knew what it was like to be told no just because of the color of his skin. So don’t worry about it, okay?”
She nodded and the two of them wandered out into the front room.
“Steve!!” Erica screeched. “I didn’t know you could sew like this!” She waved at Lucas. “What the hell?”
Steve threw back his head and laughed. “You could have come, and maybe would have gotten a cool outfit too. Too late now.”
Erica gasped, wide-eyed that Steve would call her out like this.
Mrs. Sinclair patted her daughter on the head. “You’re the one that wanted to sleep over at Tina’s this weekend, sweetie. Maybe next year.”
Erica couldn’t deny her mother’s logic and was forced to concede. “Fine, but just know I’m going to be grumpy about it.”
Mrs. Sinclair kissed the top of her daughter’s head. “I know, dear.”
“Come on,” Max said, “we’ve admired Lucas long enough, I want to go to this fair, please.”
Lucas and Steve shared a glance. “Uh-oh. She said please, we better go before she gets really mad.”
Max rolled her eyes. “Fuck off.”
Mrs. Sinclair bit her lip as she struggled not to tell the girl off for her language.
Max and Lucas piled into the backseat while Robin and Steve slid upfront.
*
The closer they got to the where the Renaissance Fair was being held, the more nervous Robin got.
“Steve?” she questioned. “Why are we heading to the burned down mall?”
Steve grinned. “We aren’t.”
Robin bit her lip. “No,” she mumbled. “I rode my bike on this road every day to get to work. This is the way to Starcourt.”
Lucas and Max leaned forward to see the road ahead of them.
“I think she’s right,” Max concluded. “This is the way to Starcourt.”
They pulled into the makeshift parking lot of the fair. It was pretty much a dust field with people in medieval getups directing traffic.
Steve pulled in where he was directed and they all piled out of the Bimmer.
They stood looking out at the field where Starcourt once stood, but was now a bustling center of outdoor activity.
“What the hell?” Robin gasped. “Where is the mall?”
Steve grinned. “This piece of land was always used for passing carnivals and the Renaissance Fair every year. When the mayor sold it to the Russians to build the mall it put a stop to a lot of summer activities the town once enjoyed. So after the earthquake they bulldozed the area and put back the way it was.”
“What did they do with the underground bunker?” Max asked, vaguely interested.
Steve scratched his cheek. “Filled it with uh, cement.”
Lucas and Max shared an appreciative glance and even Robin nodded.
Steve was the first to spot the rest of their group. Dustin, Mike, Will and El were waiting in neat little cluster for them.
Lucas tugged on the hem of his gambeson and ducked his head. Max looked over at him and rolled her eyes.
“They aren’t going to care,” she hissed.
Steve glared at her. “There has been evidence to the contrary regarding this very thing, so zip it.” He mimed zipping his mouth closed.
Max stared at him wide-eyed in shock. Robin tugged on her sleeve.
“Come on,” she told the younger girl. “Let’s got meet up with the others.”
Max huffed but did as she was told without protest.
Steve put his hands on Lucas’s shoulders and looked him in the eye. “Look, I don’t know how you feel. I can never know how you feel, but let me tell you something that those buttheads will probably never understand because they aren’t like you and me.”
Lucas nodded.
“Being a ‘nerd’ as they call it is not the be all end all of existence,” Steve said. “You can have interests outside of theirs. I know they gave you shit for joining the basketball team, but you are a good player, maybe even a great one if you keep at it. You won’t have the same experiences that they will and that’s okay.”
“But what if we stop being friends?” Lucas asked, his voice breaking.
“It’s going to suck for awhile,” Steve confirmed. “It won’t be easy and it will hurt sometimes when you least expect it, but you’ll make new friends with your same interests as long as you continue to be you.”
Lucas took in a deep breath and let out slow. “You’re friends were assholes though.”
Steve laughed. “And Mike isn’t?”
A small sunny smile peeked out from under Lucas’s cloud of worry. “Yeah, all right.”
They started walking toward the group with Steve’s arm slung over Lucas’s shoulder.
“Take a deep breath,” Steve told him as they got close. “And know I will kick his ass if he says anything.”
Lucas huffed out a laugh. “Thanks, Steve.”
They reached the crowd of their friends and waited for their reaction.
“Holy shit!” Will said. “That is an epic costume!”
And then Lucas fully reached the group and ears could be seen.
“What are you supposed to be?” Mike asked with a sneer. “There aren’t any black characters with pointy ears.”
Dustin scoffed. “He could be a Vulcan. There was a black Vulcan in ‘Search for Spock’!”
“That movie was so bad, dude,” Mike huffed. “It doesn’t count.”
“It totally counts,” Dustin protested. “It’s considered canon, therefore it counts.”
“I’m not a Vulcan,” Lucas said proudly, sticking out his chest, “I’m an elf ranger.”
“Are you a Drow then?” Mike asked. “You do know Drows are evil right?”
Dustin and Will’s jaws drop in shock and outrage.
“Dude!” Will hissed. “His skin isn’t literally black!”
Steve leaned over to the girls. “Does anyone know what a draw or whatever is?”
Lucas turned to Steve. “It’s a race of elves that live in the underdark, deep below where even the dwarves dare to delve. They’re straight up evil and very matriarchal.”
“Well that’s sexist,” Robin said putting her hands on her hips.
Mike rolled his eyes turned back to Lucas. “Well you can’t be Silvain elf, because they’re pale skinned and beautiful.”
“I’m a wood elf,” Lucas said, “my skin matches the woods around me, so I can blend in easier.”
Mike crossed his arms. “Show me one other dark skinned elf that isn’t you and maybe I’ll allow it.”
Just then a large van pulled up to the entrance in a skid, blaring metal music.
The four men got out and everyone was looking at them in stunned silence.
Eddie was dressed as a minstrel, wine dark puffy sleeves and leggings with a black tunic and boots. Gareth was a magic user in long, flowing purple robes that stopped two inches from the ground and beautifully carved wizard’s rod with a deep purple crystal in its grasp. Brian was a fighter with a metal sword at his hip and dressed in actual leather armor. Then the Party saw Jeff. He was dressed all in black with tight leggings, a short tunic and a black silk shirt that was covered by a short cloak. He had two silver daggers tucked into the tops of his thigh high boots.
He dropped the hood on his cloak to reveal that yes, Mike, he too had elf ears.
Jeff spotted Lucas and threw out his arms. “My kinsman! I greet you!”
Lucas turned and bowed low and Steve was forced to turn away to hide the smile at Mike’s stunned expression.
“Lord Kelnic,” Lucas greeted. “I understand these were a gift from you?” He rubbed the tip of one of the ears.
Jeff ran up to him. “Dude! How did you get them to match so well? I’ve tried every kind of glue to make them look like actual ears.”
Lucas blushed. “My mom used her makeup kit to blend the two.”
Jeff turned to the rest of Corroded Coffin. “And why didn’t we think of that?”
Gareth and Brian just shrugged.
Eddie on the other hand looked sheepish. “Because I thought makeup was just for girls?”
Jeff rolled his eyes and turned back to Lucas. “I’ll borrow my sister’s makeup for tomorrow. Can’t have shoddy looking ears next to my ranger kinsman.”
Lucas laughed.
Brian nudged Gareth in the ribs. “What’s Mike’s problem?”
Corroded Coffin all turned as one to see that Mike was standing there between El and Will looking like a rug had been pulled out from under him.
El patted Mike on the shoulder. “My mom says that people who judge someone by anything other than the content of their character are either too young to know better, or are immature. Grow better.”
She turned and started for the line that would grant them entrance to the Fair.
Lucas looked over at Steve and the two of them tried not to laugh at the absolute gobsmacked expression on Mike’s face.
“I’m not being racist!” he huffed and crossed his arms. “I’m not!” He looked around at all his friends, but none of them looked even remotely like they agreed with him. “He’s black so he should be black characters!”
Brian reared his head back. “Dude, how is that not racist?”
Mike looked around again panicked. “It just isn’t!”
Jeff walked up to him and looked him straight in the eye. A feat that was a little hard for most of his friends these days with how tall he’d gotten.
“There’s this thing, Mike,” he said, his voice low and menacing, “called casual racism. It’s where all your upbringing and prejudices come out in casual ways instead of saying things like nigger and that blacks should be separate from whites. It’s oh he can’t play that character, the character is white. He can’t be an elf, elves are white. That’s casual racism and you better check it before it ruins a damn good friendship.”
Jeff stared him down until Mike was nodding his agreement. He turned to Will and Dustin.
“I wasn’t here at the start of this conversation,” he said, “but you two need to be better at calling out Mike’s bullshit. Because a few years on, he should be better not worse.”
Dustin and Will gave confused glances at each other.
Jeff scoffed. “Lucas told me all about the lovely little Ghostbusters incident. He straight up told you he wasn’t going to be Winston, but Mike here assumed he wasn’t going to be anyway because he’s black. So the fact that here we are and he’s still being a racist asshole?”
“We do call him out,” Will said. “And I wasn’t here for almost a year, I don’t know what happened in that year, but yeah he got worse.”
Dustin shrugged. “I don’t know either, man. Don’t look at me.”
Steve stepped forward. “I think you do know, Dustin and I was really disappointed when I heard about it.”
Dustin looked up at him in confusion. “What do you mean?”
“After all, what’s a little casual racism when Lucas ‘betrayed’ you by joining the basketball team?” Steve said, crossing his arms over his chest.
The older members of The Hellfire Club looked chastised. Because they had all given Lucas shit for that.
“You still have time to course correct,” Steve said. “But make no mistake, any kind of bullying, is still bullying. Whether it’s about the color of their skin, the games they play, or the type of school subject they like.”
He pointed at Robin. “Band and orchestra is still people getting together and playing instruments like a metal band.” Eddie winced hard and shoved a lock of his hair in front of his face.
“Playing a sport is no different than DnD, planning, keeping track of stats, and working together are hallmarks of both.” Dustin and Mike shared a grimace and even Gareth and Brian looked uncomfortable.
“Being a genius at math or science doesn’t make you better than someone who is a genius at history or literature.”
To which everyone but Robin and Max looked at their feet. Because they had all made that mistake with Steve before this all started.
“I think we will all need to unpack some pretty garbage baggage,” Steve concluded. “But!”
All the heads shot up.
“We are here for a good time,” Steve said holding up his hand, “and as long as Mike apologizes to Jeff and Lucas I think we can move past this and enjoy ourselves today. Agreed?”
Everyone murmured their agreement, punctuated with nods. Mike looked down at his feet and kicked at a pebble.
“I’m sorry,” he muttered. “I wasn’t trying to be racist. I’ll try to be better.”
Steve looked over at Jeff and Lucas and they both gave him a thumbs up.
“Great!” Steve said cheerfully. “Now let’s get this show on the road!”
“Dirt path maybe,” Robin grumbled. “It’s like an old western out here. I swear to god Steve if I see a tumbleweed I am out of here.”
Steve laughed as they all met El in line.
Now that the heavy stuff was out of the way, it was time for some good fun.
****
My favorite line was El's "...Grow better." Because there is nothing more stinging then your girlfriend telling you to stop being an ass.
Second Chance - Chapter 4
Tumblr media
Masterlist
Warning: mention of weight loss, reader lowkeye almost blacks out, mention of medication, Tony is a good dad
Relationships: Tony x daughter!reader, Yelena x reader
Word count: 2.5k
Goodness, you were nervous. Your leg would not stop bouncing. The only time you had this much anxiety was your first doctor’s appointment. Every sense then, you got used to going alone, holding the weight of whatever news you received on your shoulders alone. Why was it so hard being here with someone? You glanced at Tony through the corner of your eye. He seemed equally as nervous as you waited for a nurse to call you back. He was hiding it, focused on whatever he was looking at on his tablet. But he was stiff as if he was glued to the chair he sat in. And when the nurse called your name, you both jumped - lost in whatever world your mind was creating.
You followed the nurse to the back, stepping on the scale to get your weight before heading to a room. “How are you feeling, angel?” She asked as you sat in the chair next to the desk. Tony sat in the chair in the corner.
“I’m doing good, Pam,” you made a note to remember the name of every nurse at the office. They were all saints and on your gift-giving list for Christmas.
“Are you just saying that because your father is here?” She questioned as she took your temperature. “97.8.” She documented it on your chart. Next, she placed the blood pressure cuff on your arm. It was your least favorite part, you hated how tingly your arm felt. You gave her a sheepish smile.
“Just the normal fatigue and light-headedness,” you admitted, looking down at the pattern on the floor. She took off the cuff and shook your arm to regain the feeling.
“Blood pressure is normal,” she sat down at the computer. “You’ve lost some weight since your last appointment. Are you eating?”
“Yes Pam,” you sighed. “Food just tastes weird.” You loved Pam but every time she was your nurse you felt like you were being scolded like a little kid.
“Protein powder and shakes,” she said. “And try small proteins throughout the day instead of three big meals.” You nodded.
“I’ll make sure she’s eating,” Tony said. “We all will.” You knew he meant that.
“Do you need any refills on your medications?” She asked. Your medical team had you on Zofran for nausea and a higher milligram of ibuprofen when your body ached. On the off chance, that ibuprofen wasn’t working you had muscle relaxers. But you didn’t like taking those. “Perfect. Dr. Carpenter will be right with you,” she said, standing up. “Take care of yourself, sweetheart, and call if you need anything.”
“I will,” you smiled. “Thank you.” Once she was gone, you stood up and sat on the exam table so you could lie down before Dr. Carpenter came in. You loved that man but boy he had a lot of energy.
“Hey,” you looked at Tony. “How are you?” He asked softly.
“Sleepy,” you mumbled, rubbing your eyes. He smiled.
“Well, we can go back to the tower and you can take a nap or we can go get lunch. Nurse Pam did say you need to eat,” you rolled your eyes and placed your arm over your forehead.
“I eat,” you said. Not enough but at least you were eating. You sighed. “Let’s go get lunch. Free food is good food.”
“Oh I’m paying now,” you smiled. Before he could come up with a clever retort the door opened.
“There she is,” Dr. Carpenter said, closing the door behind him. You sat up to meet the excited doctor. “How are you? Still kicking ass and taking names.” You smiled, rolling your eyes slightly as he gave you a quick hug instead of a handshake.
“Something like that,” you said. He turned his attention to Tony.
“And the man of the hour,” he extended his hand for Tony to take. The billionaire’s body shook by the intensity. “Dr. Lucas Carpenter,” he pulled up a chair to sit down closer to you and Tony. “When the nurses told me she didn’t come alone, I almost fell out of my chair. I’ve been telling this one to reach out to when we found out about her diagnosis but she’s as stubborn as her mother.”
“I’ve been beginning to notice,” you sighed, crossing your arms. They were talking about you as if you weren’t here. Dr. Carpenter laughed.
“I’ve been lucky to see this little firecracker grow up,” you saw Tony shift in his seat, the change went unnoticed by the doctor. “Somethings don’t change. So,” he crossed his right leg over his left and leaned back in the chair. “Have you told him everything?”
“Yes,” you said. Well, not everything but baby steps. “He and the other Avengers have been tested to see if they are a match.” The doctor smiled. You knew he was proud of you, you fought tooth and nail against him and the rest of your medical team to find a different way.
“If by chance we don’t find a match, what’s the next step?” Tony asked.
“Plan B,” you sighed.
“Plan B,” Dr. Carpenter repeated.
“What the hell is plan B?” The doctor grabbed a tablet and handed it to the billionaire. You knew it was your medical chart; blood work and other tests. It was a screen you’d stared at for a long time.
“Plan B is increasing her treatment,” he began. “Right now she is on a 3-week cycle- double dosage of chemo on week one, only one dose the following week, and then a week off.” Last week was your week woof, your double dose was tomorrow. “If we don’t find a match, she’ll have to get chemo every week and it be more intense.” Tony handed him back the tablet. You kept your eyes on the floor.
“What are the side effects of this Plan B?” He asked. The doctor sighed.
“Pretty much the same ones she’s experiencing now - nausea, fatigue, headache, and appetite loss but they could be more common and intense,” he explained. “It’s not even a guarantee it will work,” you stole a glance at Tony but he kept his face neutral. “However that is Plan B and we can’t get ahead of ourselves. We have to take it one step at a time, right?”
“Right,” you smiled. When you were younger, some kids were picking on you. You remember you sat in your room with your mom’s arms around you tight and you felt warm and safe. She said, ‘You never know how strong you are until being strong is your only choice.’ Back then you weren’t sure what she meant, you just wanted those kids to stop being mean. But now those words were one of the few things keeping you alive.
*
“Thank you,” you said to the waitress who placed your order down.
“Let me know if you need anything,” she said mostly to Tony. She fluttered her eyelashes and stuck her chest out. You cringed at the pathetic attempt at flirting with a married man no less. But Tony paid no attention to her, more focused on putting ketchup on his food. You cleared your throat. The sound caused Tony to look up at you and then to the waitress.
“Oh uh will do,” she smirked and walked away, taking his awkward rambling as a sign he found her attractive. You chuckled.
“She wanted to fuck you,” you said, taking a bite of your sandwich and you were grateful it tasted okay. It was his turn to cringe.
“Please never say that again,” you laughed, sipping on your water. “So this Dr. Carpenter, you like him?” You could feel the underlying jealousy behind every word. You knew he touched a nerve every time the doctor brought up your mom or the past in some way. You nodded.
“Yeah,” you said. “He’s been positive during this whole process despite how serious it is. But I did like your idea of him touching base with Dr. Cho just in case I get sick at the tower,” you added on quickly. You did believe it was a good idea, especially with how uncertain everything was. He smiled.
“Good but enough about doctors,” he whipped his hands on the napkin. “Tell me more about you. Any lucky ladies or men I have to worry about?” You felt your body warm up and looked away.
“Nope,” you said. “Single as a pringle.” He raised a questioning eyebrow at you. “I’m not talking about my sex life with you.”
“I don’t want to know about your sex life,” he deadpanned. “As long as you are practicing safe sex. I can get you condoms or-”
“Oh my god. Stop,” you cut him off. His smile grew.
“This is nothing to be embarrassed about. This is an important conversation to have.” Tony tried to drop the smile but he was failing miserably. You groaned, covering your face with your hands.
“I’m not having this conversation with you at a sandwich shop of all places,” he laughed, taking your hands off your face.
“Alright, alright,” he said. “I’ll drop it, for now.” You glared at him. “But I’m serious tell me about your life before all this, the stuff your mother didn’t mention in her letters.” You stared at him.
“You read them?”
“Of course. I haven’t finished all of them but I want to know what I missed.” Oh. The more time you spent with the billionaire he kept surprising you.
“Okay,” you smiled. “Yeah, I’ll tell you anything you want to know.”
*
“I think that should be it, FRIDAY,” you said, crossing the last item off your list. You were in desperate need of groceries that weren’t going to upset your stomach, especially with your appointment tomorrow.
“Right away, Miss. Easton,” the AI said. “I’ll place the order and have them brought up to you when they arrive at the tower.” Perfect. The kitchen was put together, food was ordered, and your clothes were organized. Next on your list was to hang up some of your canvases. You swallowed an ibuprofen with a tall glass of water and ignored the ache in your bones. All you had to do was push through. You lifted a box onto the couch so it was easier to go through. Your mom always told you you had a spending problem. Whenever you traveled you bought something but you justified it by getting stuff from local artists or small businesses. Smiling, you put some pottery on a small bookshelf. Above the bookshelf, you wanted to hang up a three-piece art insulation that captured a pride of lions. You picked up a hammer and held a nail in your mouth when the room began to spin. “Shit,” you mumbled, resting your forehead on the wall.
“Miss. Easton,” the AI said. “I detect your blood pressure elevating. Should I alert the medical team?” You shook your head. That was a mistake. Black spots covered your vision and the nausea you were feeling only got worse.
“I’m good,” you managed to set the hammer and nail down before slumping to the ground. Your back was against the space on the wall and you grabbed onto the leg of the bookshelf. It grounded you and helped combat the room spinning. You whimpered and closed your eyes. Maybe you weren’t okay. You were just too stubborn to ask for help.
*
Yelena had a plan, all she had to do was unlock Kate’s door and plant the noise device. In a trade of Tony finishing it, she took the test to see if she was a bone marrow match. To be fair, she was going to take the test but why not kill two birds with one stone and ask for a small favor? “Miss. Belova,” FRIDAY said, causing her to stop in front of the archer’s door. “Miss. Easton requires your assistance.” Yelena looked towards your door and hesitated. With a sigh, she rushed over to your room. The door was unlocked and Yelena called out your name. Instead of you answering, the Black Widow heard a groan. You were sitting on the ground, head resting in your hands.
“Hey, Easton,” Yelena gently closed the door and knelt in front of you. “Hi, are you with me?” She whispered, rubbing her finger up and down your arm. It took a moment but you looked up at her, eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
“Blondie,” you said. “What-what are you doing here?”
“Miss. Belova was the closest one to you,” the AI informed you. “I asked her to come check on you when I noticed you were in distress.” You sighed, resting your head back.
“Are you okay?” Yelena asked. “I can go get Stark or Pepper or-”
“I’m fine,” you cut off her nervous rambling. “I just,” you let out a shaky breath, and your eyes locked onto her green ones. “I-”
“What do you need from me?” Yelena found herself asking. The words tumbled past her lips without a second thought. But the way you looked at her made her heart skip.
“Can you sit with me?” You softly asked. “Just until the world stops spinning.” Yelena wordlessly sat down next to you, knees bent and she rested her forearms on top. She couldn’t help but look around your space. It was the same layout she had. Unlike the apartment she helped clean out, the place was a mess. There were boxes everywhere, newspapers on the floor, and very little stuff hung up on the wall. Yelena knew it was because you were still moving in and trying to make this bare space your new home. The Black Widow expected the place to be organized, all pristine and decorated. You seemed like that type of person.
“Your place is a mess,” Yelena said, breaking the silence. You gasped. “I’m serious,” she continued. “I can barely see the floor.”
“Oh shut up, Blondie,” you laughed. “It’s a work in progress.” Yelena hummed.
“If you say so,” you laughed again, hitting your shoulder against hers. She liked the sound of it. Oh, that was not good.
*
He was running the swaps he had available. There were a few that were on their way - the Barton’s in Iowa, Bruce in New Asgard, and Kate, America, and Rhodey were on their way back to the tower. But he had to know, it was killing him. As he waited for the tests, he paced the lap. He had to be a match, he could do this one thing for you. A ding sound pulled him out of his thoughts and he rushed over to his computer. Negative. Negative. Negative. That one word was all he saw. Until he saw something different. A positive. Someone was a match. His hands shook as he clicked on the profile. But the name made his stomach flip. Morgan. It was Morgan. How the hell was he going to tell you or Pepper?
[ Steve goes to the s4 basketball game but it’s for Billy. ]
~ my drabbles anthology on ao3 ~
• • •
Steve was grumpy, he could admit that. Well, he could admit it now that it had been a few hours. That didn’t stop him and Robin having an immature spat in the car over over Fast Times with the word boobies flying around.
Then, “Just get whatever is occupying your braincell off your shoulders, already.”
Steve’s jaw had dropped, openly gaping at the road towards Hawkins High. “We’re talking about your love life - lack thereof.”
“Hush.”
“Oh, am I talking or hushing?”
Robin burst out into tired, 7am giggles. “You’re so petty when you miss him.”
Steve sighed through his nose in defeat. He did miss him. Between the summer, the school year starting for the new batch of seniors, and winter basketball camp, Steve felt like he rarely saw his boyfriend. He had a green Hargrove 7 jersey in his trunk since the team was using the white jerseys for their final game, and that in itself was annoying.
Come get your jersey.
Come see me.
Steve couldn’t even fault Billy for being committed to something. He just wished it was a little more Steve and a lot less basketball.
But everything was fine. The bubble was about to break. They were finally having a home game, and it was the championship to boot. Steve’s back seat was crowded to show for it with Robin’s band attire: feather duster helm and all.
Steve was a sap. He knew it. He was ready for something long haul, but he hadn’t grown too far from the feeling of being a senior. He knew what it felt like to be a strong, upperclassman. Looked up to. On the verge of the rest of his life. He didn’t want to steal that from Billy just because they’d spent the summer being split up by jobs, hospitals, school, basketball camp...saving the world from a catastrophe that nearly took Billy away forever.
Maybe Steve wasn’t being too unreasonable.
But it also meant that Billy needed normalcy more than ever. He certainly deserved it.
So Steve dropped Robin off, and he went to Family Video for the long wait before tonight’s basketball game. The phone usually wasn’t too busy during the day, but he could predict some noise around lunchtime and the end of his shift. Today, lunchtime rang.
“Family Video, this is Steve.”
“Steve! It’s me.”
“Oh, hey, Dustin,” Steve greeted in something just a little better than a monotone. As if Dustin didn’t call from the school’s payphone every other day. “What’s up?”
Steve slowly grimaced as Dustin told him he had to fill in for Lucas at that night’s D&D campaign. Dustin got demoted back to his last name.
“Henderson, I graduated. I can’t go to your silly club session.”
“Well, Lucas has his stupid basketball game!”
“It’s not stupid. It’s the championship. You, me, and Max all know how much work he and the team have been putting into this season.”
The team. Billy. Billy was the team. Even with his injuries, recovery, and hard ass mindset that made him a lousy patient, Billy still maintained the stage presence to run the court.
He was still an asshole, but an observant one that had him taking Steve’s place as captain instead of the entitled judge’s son, Jason Carver. Billy might’ve been mean on the court but he was indifferent - even nice - in the locker room. Carver played nice on the court but wasn’t so nice off stage. Everyone’s doubts at the start of the season had been quickly put to rest.
“It’s a game, Steve - ”
“And your weird board game isn’t?”
“D&D involves weeks of plot, strategy, improvisation, and the statistical gamble of dice - ”
“Yeah, I seem to remember weeks of planning, myself. Whatever, I’ll be at the school supporting your friend for you. Uh oh, customers. Gotta go. Bye.”
“No- Steve!”
He was pretty sure he could hear Dustin cussing him out even though the phone was back on its mount. He smiled at the customers and tried to keep his glances at the clock to a minimum.
The day was easy until 4pm. Steve almost leapt out of his skin when he realized school had ended. Old habits. Today, it did mean the end of his shift, though, so he clocked out and went home to freshen up.
Freshen up for what, he didn’t know. He might have some old habits but he’d forgotten how stuffy the gymnasium could get during a game. Probably because he usually spent games on the spacious court, not the stands -
“Hey, Steve!”
He rotated to see...Stacie. No. De-uh-B-Brenda! “Brenda, hi.”
Her teased and permed hair floated around her as she smiled and walked with him into the gym. “How are you? It’s so weird. Like, half our class is gone, and the rest are hard to find.”
“Yeah, I know what you mean,” Steve said, even though he didn’t, really. All of his enduring friends were younger. With the exception of a very - tragic - few, they were somehow all alive, too.
Brenda meant alumni who had moved away. Steve didn’t contribute this much.
Predictably, spaces were available in the bleachers next to the band. People usually didn’t want to be right next to the noise, but this meant he could be close to Robin. He kept his tone jovial and polite as he curtly gestured at the bleachers. “I’m heading up.”
“Sure!” she chimed, accepting his hand for a boost. Not really his intention, but he’d never had any issue with Brenda. She was nice, smelled good. Great at math but just as crap as he was in Mrs. Click’s English. She tasted like bubble gum when they made out at a football game three years ago. All things considered, she and Steve were on easy footing.
Until Tammy Thomson showed up to sing the National Anthem.
He and Robin caught each other’s side-eye the same time. Told you, he mouthed. Muppet -
“Wow,” Brenda breathed. “She sounds amazing, doesn’t she?”
Steve smiled on autopilot, and just as quickly recoiled once her head had turned back to the performance.
He tried not to rock too strongly on his feet. He didn’t need everyone on the bleachers looking at him like x-ray vision, making him feel exposed and ready to scream over how he needed Robin’s sass, the weekend, a freaking burger, and Billy to run his mouth. A lot of mouth. A lot of...
Steve raked his hands through his hair, stuck between thinking the world of his boyfriend out there on the court and the fact that they were losing. The white jersey actually covered all of Billy’s scars, but Steve and Robin could see his fatigue arriving faster than the rest of the team. They glanced at each other, only interrupted by Max manifested between them.
“Hey,” Steve frowned. “Have you been here the whole time?”
She glanced at him, deadpan. “Duh. Which of us is going to convince him to sit on the bench?”
Steve blew air between his lips so they vibrated. “I thought you knew him better than I did. Billy doesn’t take losing well.”
Max glared at him. “He’s going to have a heart attack.”
“He’s in good hands,” Steve defended, but he could feel his confidence rapidly draining. “Peter Townsend is diabetic and the couches always kept an eye on him.”
Max grimaced at him like he had spoken another language, but as soon as she tried to say more, their coach called for a timeout. The team huddled up, and it wasn’t a big wonder why. Their best player had more than run out of steam, he’d overspent himself, and they only had a minute left to get anything done. Covered in sweat and rocking with their breaths, the team listened to Carver arguing with coach until a decision had been made. They needed a fresh player who could make the most out of a minute, and they had one.
“SINCLAIR! You’re in!”
Max and Steve heard the freshman gawk. “Huh?”
“You’re in! Son, let’s go!”
He ditched his warm-up jacket and ran into the huddle for the plan. Steve crossed his arms after giving Max a tug on her jacket so she would get off the stairs and stand with him. Billy would skin them alive later if they made a scene of approaching him on the bench, so they had to stay put.
To everyone’s trepidation, shock, and jubilant relief, Lucas delivered. Saving the world a few times had made him sharp, adaptable, and frugal with every second. The nerd managed to convert all of it into a game he had only started playing this summer.
And to top it off, he landed the final shot. Hawkins High won the game.
Steve exploded, jumping and yelling and waving his arms. Max screamed Lucas’s name, clapping her hands until her palms glowed scarlet. When the referee’s whistle coupled the scoreboard in announcing the game over, the team crowded around Lucas and Billy, and the court flooded with people.
Steve moved through the crowd easily with Max in tow, and finally - finally - got a face full of Billy. Running made his hair light and fluffy, eyes glowing as he realized who were holding onto him.
He called, “Hang on! Hang on!” and Steve let him go as the team finally set Lucas down onto his feet after hoisting him up. Billy gripped his shoulder for his attention, and Lucas accepted his hand. “Not bad, Sinclair. Not bad.”
Lucas beamed, only for his smile to drop into shock at seeing Max. “Max! You came?”
“Yeah, whatever,” she scoffed, but with a smile. Then Lucas hugged her and she looked ready to punch him. “Oh- Ew. Gross, you’re disgusting. How are you this sweaty after only a minute?”
The older teammates laughed for some reason but they all got hustled into the locker room - including Steve. He didn’t realize his blunder until the coach started doing a congratulatory speech to the team, and Steve slipped behind a wall of lockers to head toward the door...but he didn’t leave. He wanted to know what the coach had to say on Billy’s behalf. He wanted to know how the team treated him and Lucas.
He both got it and didn’t, since the coach tactfully uplifted everyone without dragging out everyone’s flaws. That was good. Billy couldn’t take a compliment without being reminded of how he had to sit out the rest of the game. More importantly, the coach spoke about how grateful he was to have the seniors under his wings after such a year.
For a gut-wrenching second, Steve thought the coach was going to mention the kids who were still “missing” from the summer.
He didn’t. He kept the room on high feelings, warning the rest of the team that winning a championship wouldn’t make things easy next season, and that they had summer training to look forward to. He reminded them to clean up after themselves, and saw himself out right as somebody unearthed a boombox from their gym bag.
“Why the hell did you bring that thing?”
“To either celebrate or wallow in our sorrows,” came the reply, followed by laughter and rowdy singing...
Steve looked up when a pair of pants was thrown over the wall of lockers. Right under the waistband of the sweatpants, was a Hawkins tiger, and a yellow number seven. Steve smiled and yanked it all the way onto his side.
Billy soon followed, coming around the lockers to find his pants in Steve’s hands. A bright smile flashed on his face before he reigned it in and sauntered toward him. He had to get close to be heard over the noise of music, singing, and locker rattling. “You’re a weird dust bunny.”
Thank goodness for the noise, because Steve snorted as he reached for him. “Come here.”
Billy let him. Billy never would’ve let him before July of 1985. But Billy let him now, cradling the sweaty-damp junction of his skull and neck, nuzzling his nose with Billy’s to encourage Billy to finish the distance. Billy’s lips were soft, unbearably soft and insistent. His arms initially went around Steve’s body, hands sliding over his shoulder blades and then down, down to give the hillocks of his ass cheeks a lift.
At least Billy had some tact, because the bubble burst and Steve tilted his head for more. Billy’s hands lifted up for his waist, incidentally hiking up Steve’s grey shirt but no further. Lockers chimed behind Billy’s back when Steve pushed him against them. Steve felt more than heard Billy’s low hum in his throat, the vibration on his lips and the breath from his nose.
Steve didn’t care that Billy had a game’s worth of sweat and filth on his skin. The only thing keeping him in check was his concern for Billy’s heart and lungs. Kissing made him out of breath, sometimes. For Steve it was as blissful as it was scary.
But this time, Billy chased his lips when he pulled back. His hand found Steve’s hair and Steve felt teeth in their kiss -
A locker slammed over the music, inducing someone to holler, “Sinclair! You comin’ tonight?”
“Uh, let me think on it. I’m gonna shower real fast!”
Billy stepped off where he’d been leaning against the lockers and Steve composed himself in time for Lucas to step into view. He tried to play it casual, but his wide eyes said, Scram, already!
Steve smiled bashfully and waved him away. To Billy, he asked, “Are you coming over?”
Billy scoffed and Steve couldn’t blame him. Big championship party tonight -
“You joking? I’m moving in. I’m exhausted and I want pancakes everyday for the next week.”
A stupid giggle spat out of him. He might’ve actually spit a little. Steve felt like he could cry. He didn’t, though. He’d cried enough for a whole summer.
“Deal... How do I get out of here?”
Billy smirked and nodded his head toward the bathroom side of the locker room. “We’re about to run Sinclair out of the showers.”
YESSSS HOW ABT BEING BEST FRIENDS WITH THE HOCKEY TEAM AND SOFT LAUNCHING YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH JJ
Soft Launch - JJ McCarthy
Tumblr media
*********************************************************
“Hi baby.” JJ smiled down at you, keeping his voice low as you two walked through campus, his hand on your lower back and he guided you.
You two were public and as much as you would have liked to kiss him in public, you both knew it was best to keep it under wraps for the time being.
Well that was until some freshman from the debate team saw JJ press a gentle kiss to your lips as he told you goodbye when he dropped you off at your dorm.
“I’ll see you later. Are you still going to the boys house?” He asked as he walked backwards, making sure you two were still on for tonight.
You nodded as he shot you a thumbs up, him finally leaving for practice.
You wanted to tell your friends before news got out, but some punk had beat you to it.
“You’re dating who?” Nolan laughed as he watched you walk into their house, immediately starting on you.
You turned around, trying to walk out, only to bump into Rutgers chest, him coming in after you, “No can do bucko. Turn around.” His hands found the side of your arms, turning you around to push you forward towards the open spot on the couch.
“McCarthy of all people? Him?” Steve scoffed, “You could do better.”
“He’s nice. And super sweet. And look at that face.” You gushed. They looked at you with distaste before letting a laugh escape their lips.
You had invited JJ with you over to Nolan’s house to tell them, but the news broke campus wide that ‘Super Star Quarterback JJ McCarthy was off the market by you’ and the boys had gotten whiff of it before you were able to tell them.
“When did this happen?” Ethan asked as he grabbed your forearm, tugging you to sit down next to him.
“Like.. a month-“
“A month!” Phil laughed, “Dude, we didn’t even suspect anything.”
“I- We wanted to tell you, but apparently it’s already out.”
“Yeah we heard.” Dylan snorted, “Ya know Y/N/N, if you wanted to be more secretive, maybe you should have invited him in if you wanted to kiss him.” He laughed as he pulled up the picture of you two smooching.
You rolled your eyes at him.
“Well we didn’t expect this drama today.” Luca laughed.
The conversation changed after that, you being thankful for this until you heard a knock on the front door, Nolan popping up to grab it.
“Hey buddy.” Your eyes widened as you saw JJ walk into his house, the tension in the air becoming awkward.
A couple of the boys glared at him, sorta jokingly. It wasn’t that they care who you dated, most definitely wasn’t that- it was more so they were nervous that they’d hurt you. Especially an athlete. They all knew how these boys ran through girls and they didn’t want you in that situation.
Especially Nolan. You had been close with him since your freshman year, which would have been his junior year. You both got paired up for a project, you both finding out the other was pretty cool. It was all history from there.
“One wrong move.” Ethan glared, “We’re watching you.”
“Apparently others are too.” JJ commented, you nodding.
“Oh yeah. They found out before I even had a chance to say anything when I walked in.” You admitted as you stood up, walking over to him, “Guys, this is JJ, my boyfriend.”
You didn’t want the football player part looming over him so that’s exactly why you introduced him the way you did.
It didn’t take long for Steve and Phil to catch on before Steve replied with, “Nice to meet you, Y/N’s boyfriend.”
You rolled your eyes, but thankful one of them was smart enough to catch on, and not say something stupid.
“Well I’ve had enough. Can we just start this movie already?” Jacob whined.
“Go ahead.” You laughed as you got comfortable next to JJ on the couch.
“Hands where we can see them pal.”
ONESHOT: LUCAS LEE X WALLACE WELLS FLUFF
Wallace and Lucas were about to have their first official date. Sure, they had hung out before this, and talked on the phone, but today, they would be sitting down at a restaurant having a nice meal. It was nothing crazy, just Sneaky Dee’s.
Wallace was getting ready, waiting for Lucas to pick him up. Finally, a boyfriend with a car. He was starting to hate walking everywhere, especially in the bite of the Toronto cold.
“Hurry up, Wallace! I need to pee!” Scott said from the other side of the bathroom door. Wallace ignored him as he kept fixing his hair in the mirror and sprayed cologne on his body. Once he finally did exit the bathroom, Scott ran in there as if he hadn’t peed in a year.
Wallace was nervous. He usually wasn’t nervous on dates. But, he really liked Lucas. Maybe he was the one.
“Why are you pacing?” Scott asked as he exited the bathroom. Wallace didn’t even realize he started doing that. “Are you nervous or something? You’re making me a little dizzy…”
“I guess I am,” He admitted. “I’m never nervous. That’s usually you! Oh, god…”
“Dude, chill,” Scott chuckled, taking Wallace by the shoulders. “Just, um, don’t drink too much, and… Be yourself…? I don’t know, I’m not good at this kind of stuff…”
“Yeah, thanks captain obvious,” Wallace replied. His pacing and timid thoughts were interrupted by the doorbell ringing. “It’s him!”
“Go get 'em!” Scott cheered.
Wallace grabbed his coat and opened the door to reveal Lucas’s tall stature standing in the doorway. “You look great,” He smiled.
“So do you,” Wallace replied.
“Shall we?” Lucas offered his hand for Wallace to take and he accepted.
“Romantically cliche, are we?” Wallace remarked, closing the apartment door behind him.
“I want to impress a man on our first official date, don’t I?” Lucas opened the car door for Wallace and he stepped in.
Lucas drove them to Sneaky Dee’s, which was only about 5 minutes away. Once they sat down at their table, they started reading the menus to themselves and engaging in small talk.
“What are you gonna order?” Lucas asked.
“I dunno… Probably a martini and maybe a tasteful pasta,” Wallace replied.
“Tasteful is a strong word for this place,” Lucas chuckled.
“Well, yeah, tasteful for this place,” Wallace chuckled back. “Slightly undercooked, either over or under seasoned, no in between… And hopefully still hot by the time it gets to the table.”
Once they were waiting for their food, Lucas took Wallace’s hand in his from across the table.
“This is really nice, y’know? I’ve never really been on a real date before,” He admitted.
“Look at you, being soft,” Wallace teased. “I’ve been on a few real dates, but they all kind of sucked.”
“This one won’t suck, I’ll make sure of it,” Lucas smiled. “Speaking of which… I got you something.” He dug through his pockets searching for a small gift.
“You didn’t have to get me anything,” Wallace was already taken aback by Lucas’s efforts.
“I saw it and it made me think of you,” Lucas revealed a bracelet with blue and black beads on it. “It’s the evil eye, it’s for protection against… Like, everything. Plus, blue is your favorite color, right?”
“It is, yeah,” Wallace was astonished. No one had ever given him a gift on a first date, or any date. He gently took the bracelet from Lucas’s palm and put it on. “This is so thoughtful… Since when do you know about crystals and evil eyes and things?”
“I was hanging out with Todd… I guess he’s into that stuff,” Lucas replied.
Wallace looked up and gazed into Lucas’s eyes. The connection between the two of them was like a magnetic pull. They smiled at each other and their gazing was abruptly interrupted by the waiter placing their food on the table.
“Thank you,” They said to the waiter simultaneously, snapping out of their trance.
Their meals sort of matched their personalities. Wallace did end up ordering a small pasta dish. It was light and slightly dainty, like him. Lucas ordered a burger. It wasn’t super sloppy or greasy, but it was big and full of toppings.
“It’s usually not polite to get a messy meal on the first date, y’know,” Wallace teased.
“Can you blame me? Look how good this looks!” Lucas argued. “Though, your pasta does look good.”
“You want a bite?” Wallace asked.
“Sure,” Lucas agreed.
Wallace stuck a piece of penne on his fork and fed it to Lucas. “I was hoping you’d say yes just so I could do that,” He admitted, a flirtatious look on his face.
“This is really good, you made a good choice,” Lucas said, mid-chew. “And, maybe I said yes hoping you’d do that.”
The meal went on, and they talked and laughed, and Wallace got a little tipsy.
“Oh, you got something on your face,” Wallace said, taking a napkin to Lucas’s cheek.
“And I’m the cliche one?” Lucas joked.
Once they left, Lucas drove Wallace home and they sat in his car for a moment.
“I had a lot of fun,” Lucas smiled. “We should do it again.”
“Absolutely,” Wallace replied. “That was the best date I’ve ever been on.”
Lucas was proud of himself. He kept smiling, which made Wallace smile, too. Their gazing trance started again, and Lucas decided to go for it. He kissed Wallace. Wallace was shocked at first, but he kissed back.
“Damn,” He sighed after the kiss. “You’re a great kisser.”
“And you’re slightly drunk,” Lucas laughed. “Do you want me to walk you to the door?”
“No, no, I’ll be fine. Scott’s still awake,” Wallace insisted. “I’ll call you!” He said, getting out of the car.
“How was it?” Scott asked as soon as Wallace walked through the door.
“It was…” Wallace sighed, plopping himself onto the armchair. “The dreamiest date ever.”
“Dreamy? At Sneaky Dee’s?” Scott questioned.
“As dreamy as a Sneaky Dee’s date could be!” Wallace giggled.
“I’m so in love with you even the thought of losing you makes me sick,” you admitted.
Eddie stared down at you, shock in his eyes and once you realised what you had said you wanted to shrink into a hole and die.
“You love me?” Eddie asked.
“Yes,” you said, voice just above a whisper. You looked away from him. His fingers hooked under your chin, forcing you to look at him again. “But i’m terrified,” you gulped. “Terrified of everything that comes with loving you in public.”
“I won’t let anything happen to you,” Eddie replied.
“Eddie…” you said, your hands wrapping around his wrists.
“Y/N, I don’t want us to only exist in the dark of your room anymore,” Eddie said. “I want to hold your hand while i’m walking you to class, want to introduce you to all my friends as my girlfriend, I want to kiss you in front of everybody and make sure everyone knows that you’re mine and i’m yours,” he said. “These people, they don’t matter. In five years time none of them will even be around… What really matters is you and me, because i’m gunna be by your side for life.”
You stared up at him, tears streaming down your cheeks at his sweet word.
“Let me take you on a date, just one, and i’ll change your mind,” Eddie said. “I’ll show you what it’s like to be together in public and then you can make up your mind.”
“Okay, deal,” you said. He wiped the tears that were accumulating on your cheeks and connected his lips with yours.
“Oh,” he pulled away, grinning at you. “I love you too, by the way.” You smiled hard, hands wrapping around his neck.
“You guys!”
Your head snapped in the direction of the door to see Dustin, Lucas and Mike standing there, watching the both of you.
“How long have you three been standing there?” Eddie asked, his cheeks heating up.
“Long enough to hear you say I love you,” Dustin grinned.
“Shut up,” Eddie said, looking away from Dustin.
-
Eddie took you out on a proper date, he drove the both of you to a nearby diner to eat. You were nervous, nervous that someone from school would show up.
“Just calm down,” Eddie said, placing his hand on top of yours. “I mean, you’re making me feel like shit here,” he chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. “Are you really that ashamed of me?”
“I’m not ashamed of you,” you replied, your eyes landing on his. “You just don’t know these peoples like I do… my friends, I mean. I’ll be kicked off the cheer squad like instantly and lose any hopes of a scholarship.”
“That damn scholarship… fuck your scholarship, stay here in Hawkins with me,” Eddie said. “I’ll do everything to give you the life you deserve.”
“Eddie…” you muttered, shaking your head. He smirked at you, holding your hand tighter.
“I’ll support you either way. Although, i’d hate to see you leave… maybe i’ll just come along with you,” he suggested. You smiled at his comment.
All your nerves began to fade away as the night went on. You didn’t care anymore if someone caught you with him. Everything he had said earlier was right, at the end of the day it’d just be you and him. All of your so called friends were not in this for the long run, once high school was over they’d probably forget about you.
“God, I love you,” Eddie said as the night wrapped up, the pair of you walked back to his van hand in hand.
“I love you too,” you said, shyly. The words felt foreign on your tongue. They had only been reserved for family before this moment. “Eddie,” you said, stopping your movements, holding both of his hands. He hummed, a concerned look on his face, wondering why you had stopped. “Say the word and i’m yours,” you said.
His face softened, a grin creeping onto his lips. “Do you wanna be my girlfriend? Officially?” He asked.
You reached up, pressing your lips against his before replying, “yes.”
You made out with him practically all the way back to his van and you could hardly keeps your hands off of him as he drove you back to his house. His uncle was away for the weekend, which meant the pair of you would get some alone time.
Eddie had never taken you back to his place before, everything the pair of you had done had always been at your house.
“Welcome to my humble abode,” Eddie said, holding your hand as he pushed the front door open. You walked in front of him, glancing around. “Sorry about the mess, my uncle’s always working and I spend most of my time at your house, as you know,” he said.
You smiled, turning around and hugging him. “Show me your room,” you said.
You followed Eddie to his bedroom, watching him as he began to give you a mini tour of everything he had. You closed his bedroom door and Eddie glanced over his shoulder at you.
“Get on the bed,” you ordered. Eddie raised his eyebrows at you, a smirk making its way on his face. “I wanna ride you,” you said, pushing your hands against his chest, backing him into his bed.
“You didn’t have to close the door,” Eddie chuckled, knees bucking once he hit the edge of his bed, falling back onto the mattress. “It’s just us here.”
“Dramatic effect,” you shrugged, glancing around his mattress, face screwing up at the stains. “What the hell are these stains from?”
“What do you think, Henderson?” He asked, pulling you on top of him, pressing his lips against yours.
You pulled your face away from his. “From you being a man whore,” you replied.
“Says the one who’s about to contribute to the stains on my mattress,” Eddie smirked, watching you as you pulled your cheer dress off. His hands were instantly on your body, unclasping your bra and tossing it to the ground. “For what it’s worth, you’re the best i’ve had.”
“I know,” you replied, bending down and kissing him hard.
You didn’t waste much time undressing him and taking your own panties off. You reached between your bodies, aligning his cock with your entrance before sinking down onto him, your pussy suffocating his dick.
Eddie groaned, his hands flying to your waist, fingers digging into your skin as you began to rock back and forth.
“Eddie,” you whined, looking down at him. Your hips moving faster as you already felt that knot in your stomach from the new angle. You had never been on top before. “I’m gunna cum,” you whispered.
“It’s okay, baby,” he replied. Staring up at you as you came undone, your pussy soaking his cock as you came on top of him. Eddie’s hands kept your jolting hips steady against him, your head falling back, sweat beads on your forehead.
You looked back down at him, hips moving at a fast and steady pace once you had came down from your orgasm. You attempted to reach for his hand, moaning hard, nearly collapsing onto him at how good it felt, your hands steadying yourself on his chest.
You breathed hard, reaching for his hand again, bringing it to your throat. “P-Please,” you begged.
He chuckled, firmly wrapping his fingers around your throat. “Is this what you wanted? You’re such a slut,” Eddie said, is grip tightening as you moaned.
“I love you,” you said, voice raspy from the choking.
“I love you too,” he replied.
You began to bounce up and down on him, wanting to feel more. Needing to feel more. More. More. More.
“Jesus- Fuck- Shit, don’t fucking stop,” Eddie said, his grip loosening from around your throat. You gasped loudly, your legs shaking hard as his dick slid against that spongy spot. You had cramps in your thighs, panting hard, movements growing sloppy. “Aww, are you tired baby?” Eddie cooed, condescendingly, both of this hands falling to your waist. “Here, let me help. You rest up,” he said as he began to snap his hips into you.
You moaned loudly, falling forward, your head resting in the crook of his neck. Your tongue shot out, sucking dark marks into his skin as you whimpered and whined against him.
Eddie’s arms snaked around your back, still fucking his dick into you at a fast pace.
“You marking me up?” He groaned, tilting his head so you had better access. “Branding me?”
“Want everyone to know who you belong too,” you muttered, your lips moving to his, you shoved your tongue inside of his mouth, kissing him passionately. “Especially that bitch Sarah,” you said once you pulled away. “Bet she couldn’t make you feel this good, hmm?”
Eddie chuckled at your words. “No way, princess,” he breathed. You hummed in response, your core tightening once again, your orgasm hitting you unexpectedly.
You sat up straight, moaning loudly as you came for the second time. Eddie groaned at the feeling of your pussy spasming against his hard cock.
“Good girl,” he cooed, hands on your cheeks. You sobbed, feeling a little overstimulated but still determined to make him cum, which is why you took back over, your hips rocking against him again.
It didn’t take long for Eddie to feel that all too familiar feeling of his orgasm on the way.
“I’m about to cum,” Eddie said, preparing for you to pull away and finish him off with your mouth or hands like you usually did. Instead you stayed put, still riding him. “Y/N, seriously, i’m gunna cum.”
“I want you to cum inside of me, Eddie,” you said. “Want you to fill me up.”
Eddie groaned, that’s all it took to push him over the edge. Hot ropes of his cum shooting deep within your walls. You rode out his high, both of your movements getting sloppy before you pulled away, collapsing beside him.
Eddie rolled over, staring down at your heat. His cum spilling out of your pussy. With two fingers he reached over, dragging them through his seed before stuffing the leakage back inside of you, making you moan at the feeling.
“Can’t have any waste now can we sweetheart?” Eddie asked, kissing your forehead.
