I'm sorry but i'm addicted to our boy Spamton- I have a little unique request here. So this takes place where Spamton just moves in the Queen's mansion, he meets the reader and immediately falls for their kind words and gestures. Weeks pass, and he goes to see them, but catches them talking and hanging out with Swatch.. He gets really jealous to the point of changing his style to match Swatch's
"Oh [y/n]! Have You Met Our Newest Guest?"
"Uh, I don't believe-"
"He's An Interesting Addison Who Made A Big Name For Himself! Ohohoho!" Queen laughed joyously, pausing to sip her glass of battery acid. "I Wonder How He Got So Rich...No Matter. As My Peon, I Order You Greet Him......Whenever It's Convenient For You."
"Sure thing. I'll go now." With a respectful nod, you set off to the mansion's guest chambers to meet this newcomer. You've lived here for a long time--and somewhat reluctantly since Queen decided to make you one of her peons one day. But life was actually pretty good.
It wasn't like you had anything better to do, so if she needed someone to help her with plans that..didn't seem all-that urgent, you'll offer your assistance. She let you stay in the mansion for free and never made you do anything if you weren't feeling up to it.
For a tyrannical ruler she was rather kind.
Yet you didn't wanna take advantage of her hospitality, so you'd just listen to whatever she says. And if she wants you to meet this celebrity as part of her endless lists of requests, then you'll happily oblige. But you were eager too since you've seen his face on TV a lot. It felt like an honor.
After wandering the corridors of deactivated puzzles, Mona Lisa-esque portraits, and meticulously-placed pottery, you finally arrived at the guest rooms. You hummed a small tune as you passed by each one, stopping when you noticed one door was open.
Peeking inside, you saw the Addison still setting up things. A phone was tucked between his shoulder and ear as he moved a box whilst rambling to whoever was on the other end of the line.
"Yea! I promise I won't let you down, okay? Soon I'll be bigger than ever before! I know I'm already a big shot but....haha, yeah, I shouldn't get carried away. Okay. Right..we'll discuss more of this tomorrow. Thanks!"
After hanging up the phone and returning it to the receiver, he finally noticed you and smiled. "Hey, hey! Haven't seen your face around here yet. But surely you know mine, right?"
"Yeah." You smiled, not wanting to shy away from talking with him. "Spamton, right?"
"Everybody's favorite number-one rated salesman!!" He laughed. "It's good you know me..'cuz soon ALL of Cyber World will know my name! It's a pleasure to meet you...?"
"[Y/n]. I'm one of Queen's peons." You shook his hand politely. The energy that radiated from him was so bright. Just as much as his pearly smile was.
Stepping inside, you glanced around at the luxurious furniture. He definitely got the higher-class rooms, with the addition of a large window that showed the neon green meridians that stretched across the night sky. It was certainly a beautiful view to fall asleep to. "Need help unpacking?"
"Oh--sure!!" At first Spamton seemed surprised by your offer, but he nodded. "If you want, be my guest. And while we unpack, I gotta ask you..how's it being Queen's peon?"
............
Weeks passed, and you've gotten to know Spamton more and more. You realized he was actually a sweet down-to-earth guy all around. Although he was on the phone a lot, he'd make time to hang out with you, so you two became fast friends.
He was truly living the best life. Posters of his car advertisements were littered all over the city, and the Swatchlings attended to his every need. Though one thing was hard to admit, even when it seemed like he had it all:
You were his only friend now that everyone else is intimidated by his status--as they would shy away from conversing with him--and the Addisons, well, abandoned him out of jealousy.
Obviously that made him worry about driving you away, especially when he's on the phone nonstop. But...the fact you've been so kind to him in every word and gesture, treating him like a regular person and not some untouchable celebrity, was quite endearing. Most admired him for his products, not his personality.
Your kindness made him fall for you hard and fast, ever since day one. He wasn't sure if this was a good idea; to let it get in the way of his business.
But what the hell? He was a big shot! He can afford to go a bit bigger and take more risks. Living in this mansion with someone who loved him would be the perfect dream.
There was a much bigger dream that his valued caller insisted he focused on, but that can come later.
So this morning, Spamton set out to find you to address these feelings once and for all. Yet he was rather nervous. Addisons were most confident in selling products, not so much...everything else. But he didn't wanna back down. He kept smiling no matter what.
As he checked inside the color café that he usually frequented, he saw you eating at the table. He noticed you weren't alone but with Swatch, talking and...
Laughing with them?
And just like that, his smile faded much like his hope.
Of course, the head butler had their ways to swoon people. He tried not to think of it as anything more than just their personality. It's just their way to entice returning customers.
That's all...right?
Spamton ducked behind one of the displays, listening in on your conversation to determine if he should proceed or not.
"By the way, we've known each other for a while and..I've always wanted to ask you something.."
"Yes? What is your inquiry?"
He held his breath. This is exactly what he feared. Knowing that you've been here longer, it's obvious you'd be closer to that damn bird-
"Your outfit."
Then he exhaled shakily, relieved. 'What are you getting so worked up for, idiot?' He thought in the back of his mind, but he continued eavesdropping.
"Did the Queen make it or give it to you? It's very stylish and really makes you stand out from the other Swatchlings."
"Ah, in fact I decided this look for myself." Swatch chuckled softly, raising a wing to adjust their glasses. "The tailor did marvelous work with my vision: black suit, tinted glasses. Very fashionable, is it not?"
"It is. I like it a lot."
"Why thank you. I see why our Lady Grace admires you. Just for that compliment, I'll give you a discount on any of our products in the gift shop."
"Should be every day if you ask me." You joked, earning another chuckle from them.
Seeing all of this and the way you two spoke like close friends was a jab in Spamton's heart-shaped object. 'So [y/n] likes people who stand out? Well I can stand out, too..' He thought bitterly as he stormed out of the shop without either of you knowing he was there.
Why should he settle with being a blank-slate Addison like the rest of them? He didn't consider himself one anymore.
Today, he told his valued caller, he was gonna be a whole new person.
It would help him get closer to both of his dreams, but there was only one on his mind now.
............
Later that night as you were getting ready for bed, you heard a knock at the door. You huffed in annoyance, assuming Queen needed you for something.
She had a knack for disturbing you at ungodly hours. But knowing better than to ignore her, you went to answer the door anyways-
To some strange black-haired guy in a black suit and white turtleneck sweater.
"Hi, um...can I help you?"
"[Y/n]? It's me."
"....wait....Spamton?"
"Yeah!" The salesman laughed, throwing his arms out and making a pose. "Whatdya think of me now?"
Perplexed, you looked him up and down. He ditched the lime-green pants, instead wearing white trousers. And his hair was slicked back. But what was most peculiar about him were his glasses, tinted with pink and yellow lenses.
Had you not known any better, you would've thought Swatch suddenly shrunk and became robotized.
"Cool but..you kinda look like Swatch a little bit. Was that on purpose?" You mused.
"...haha....yeah uh..funny story. Um.." He dropped the act, losing his trademark grin as he wondered how to explain himself and this sudden transformation. You could tell he wanted to talk inside the room, so you let him in and shut the door.
"I don't recall Queen mentioning any costume contest-"
"It's not a costume." He muttered, uncomfortably rubbing his hands together as he looked at you with sadness. "This is who I am now. The new me."
"..huh? You serious?" When he nodded, you frowned slightly. "I'm confused. You don't look like an Addison anymore-"
"That's the point...! I...I don't wanna be associated with them anymore. I decided to stand out, y'know? If you're gonna be a big shot, ya gotta stand out from the crowd!" He forced a laugh that sounded rather glitchy.
You didn't buy it. It wasn't like him to do this out of the blue.
"Spamton, why imitate Swatch of all people? And why out of the blue like this? I mean..I don't mind if you like their style. But I didn't even recognize you until you spoke."
Try as he might, he couldn't make any better excuses. So seeing that he was cornered made him finally admit his jealousy, overhearing your conversation with Swatch while he was browsing--when he really wasn't, but he didn't wanna come off as creepy.
His voice glitched further due to stress, accidentally blurting out some kind of...flirtatious term as he explained how much you meant to him since day one.
You weren't sure if he meant to say "hot single" on purpose. Though you were flattered that such a famous guy like him...actually had a crush on you, an ordinary Darkner who just fetched the Queen's stick wherever she threw it.
You found it hard to believe he thought of you that way..so you kept your own feelings buried. So to see that it's mutual was a relief, and it made you smile.
Spamton, on the other hand, was stressing the hell out. So much so he didn't even see your smile. He just saw himself being stupid the more he rambled on.
It was such a stupid, stupid reason to get insecure--to the point of changing his entire appearance without warning. All because you were friends with a butler who was doing their job???
How selfish can he get when he already had everything he wanted and more?
When he did acknowledge your small smile, he thought you were holding yourself back from laughing. But you had every right to laugh and call him a joke for thinking this will get your attention.
As he finished talking, he could see your smile fade and huffed. He waited for you to tell him how stupid he looks and to go back to being the plain old Addison you met.
Instead of ridiculing him you...hugged him?
At this point you were sitting on the bed together. Of course yours wasn't as massive as his was, but it was big enough for you two to share.
"Spammy, I'm flattered you like me in that way but...you didn't have to do all of this to get my attention. I promise there's nothing going on between Swatch and I. We're just friends. They're not replacing you or anything."
"I know, it's just.." Taking off the glasses, he set them aside before hugging you tightly, head buried in your chest. "I don't wanna lose the only person in this damn place who makes me feel like myself. Who loves me for me, not my success. And...I-I felt like I had to change something about myself to make sure of that."
"Well..you don't need to change anymore. I love you no matter what you look like."
He blinked, his face turning as red as his cheeks.
You could sense his embarrassment from the way he tensed up in your arms and chuckled, patting his hair softly. "Just..don't feel pressured to change for me..or anybody for that matter, okay? Or at least let me know if you're gonna change things up again."
"You don't think..I look stupid or creepy like this?"
"No. Honestly you look pretty handsome. Black hair suits you well."
Hearing those words made him breathe a small sigh of relief. He nodded and hugged you tighter.
His new looks were staying for good.

“As cases continue to rise officials have announced as of 12am tonight a nationwide lockdown will be enforced.”
Six pairs of eyes were glued to the large screen, most of them worried-- yours however only showed off pure irritation.
“-- in order to minimise rising case numbers President Moon announced a country wide travel ban. Non Korean residents will have paid flights back to their home country, Korean residents outside the country will not be let back in until further notice--”
Your stomach plummeted. You're stuck here for as long as your brother is stuck in the Netherlands..
“Y/N?”
You could hear the men around you calling out to you, but it sounded muffled, like your head was under water.
The five men around you were panicking at your frozen state, you were like a statue-- even Jeongguk was unable to hide his worry.
Taehyung was sitting by your feet whining, his arms wrapped around his own torso. He had tried to hug your legs, wanting to provide some comfort to your shaking form but Namjoon had nudged him away, sending a warning look before crouching by your side and trying to pull your attention back.
“Y/N, you need to breathe--relax.” He cooed, his hands balled into fists on his thighs. It was taking all his energy to not reach out and touch you, to hold you and promise everything was okay. “Jay will be fine, he’s safe with Mila.”
Unfortunately, the boy's sweet attempts to console you only made you feel worse. They didn’t know you were panicking about being here longer. They thought you were worried for your brother's safety.
But you were only worried about your own.
“Y/N, do you think I could come to the store with you?” Seokjin’s voice asked shyly, his hands tightly gripping one another. “I just thought since I know the boys well— and my ah, physical differences are easier to hide—“
You raised an eyebrow, smirking at the babbling hybrid. You had grown much more confident with the polar bear hybrid, and even a few of the others thanks to being locked in 24/7. You had still yet to meet Hoseok and Yoongi, and Jeongguk was more than happy to keep as much distance from you as humanly possible, but otherwise, you were somewhat comfortable in your surroundings for once.
The few occasions you were able to leave the house was to get groceries and other essentials, but otherwise being caught out of the house without solid reasoning would land you a hefty fine and you weren’t exactly financially stable enough to pay thousands of dollars.
Your brother had been in contact with you, making sure the boys were all doing fine and that you were coping with the news and long term adjustment. He had been supplying you money, and you weren’t sure where he was getting it from. His clinic had been shut since he left the country so it wasn’t from there, but you were too deep in your self pity to question it.
“Sure, I don’t see why no—“
“No fair. If Jin Hyung can go out I wanna too!” Taehyung whined, appearing from thin air. His dark hair hung over his eyes, still dripping from his shower.
“Your tail is too noticeable.” Jin shrugged, wrapping a long arm over your tiny shoulders.
The brunette glared at the blond, stomping over to pull you away. Lightly grabbing the pocket of your white hoodie and tugging you into his chest. You wriggled, trying to pull out of his grip but it only seemed to make it tighten.
“You’re always selfish with her!” The younger complained, resting his chin on the crown of your head.
A dramatic groan came from behind you as Jin, no doubtedly, rolled his eyes at the monkey's words. “I can’t help it if I’m her favourite.”
Taehyung stiffened. You could feel him grinding his teeth, the sound of his teeth dragging made you feel nauseous.
“She doesn’t have favourites.” Namjoon cut in, carefully pulling you out of the monkey's arms and wrapping his own around your shoulder. “And Jin Hyung is right, your tail is too noticeable.”
Taehyung’s wide eyes narrowed, his arms crossed over his chest. “You’re the only one who can’t keep it still!” He argued.
Namjoon’s face flushed pink, his jaw jutting out. It was true. Like animals, hybrids often displayed their emotions and moods through tail movements, and while the others had passed with flying colours in emotional control, Namjoon had always struggled.
“Be that as it may, we can’t risk it. Hyung will go with Y/N and help pick out foods best suited to each of us.” He said sternly, sounding confident despite the pink tinge to his round cheeks.
You smiled apologetically at the monkey hybrid. He was clearly biting his tongue, arms tightly crossed and eyes squinting.
“Fine. But when you get back Y/Nie is playing with me.”
Grocery shopping had always been easy. You only had yourself to think of, but now you had seven others depending on you. You weren’t sure about allergies, or even just what everyone liked and disliked.
You still needed to get around to those files…
Thankfully your brother had left behind a card for shopping, knowing your pathetic bank account would ever be able to handle more than one shop.
With Seokjin leaning on the handles of the shopping cart he directed you where to go, what to grab all while letting you browse and pick out your own snacks.
“Yoongi and Hobi will be joining us tonight, I’ll need to get more meat. Yoongi practically inhales it.” The hybrid sighed, voicing his thoughts aloud.
You glanced over your shoulder, smiling softly at the sight of Seokjin. He was dressed comfortably, washed out blue jeans, a white sweater and a red cap. Round glasses sat on the bridge of his nose as he read over packaging, his plump lips pouting as he considered every item.
“Do you think we could get lamb, Y/N?” He piqued up, dropping three packets of snacks into the cart before waddling to catch up to you.
“I don’t see why not, it’s my brothers card after all.” You shrugged, grinning. You held back a laugh as his cheeks turned pink, attempting to hide the bright colour he rushed forward to avoid your gaze.
You had noticed the boys were all easily flustered, you found it funny. Sometimes Jimin or Jin tried to say something flirty, and when you countered back the two turned red and made excuses to run away. Sometimes you just had to talk to them and their faces would turn redder than an apple.
Taehyung was a little more difficult, most of the time he was rather clueless with what he said, or at least that’s how he played it off to be.
Namjoon just didn’t try. He just preferred to leave cute gifts for you on your bed; Flowers he had grown that were in season, fruits and clumsily made origami.
Jeongguk completely avoided you, and Taehyung the little asshole, made sure to tell you the youngest hybrid liked you, telling you how the youngest was always staring at you or asking his brothers about what you were doing.
“The look that the cashier gave you was so rude!” Seokjin huffed, closing the passenger door.
You rolled your eyes, starting the car. You didn’t blame the poor girl, you had bought so much food it caused a huge back up, the line running down the isles . You couldn’t even look at the cashier, too embarrassed.
The car ride was pretty quiet, the only sounds were Seokjin humming along to the radio and the crinkling from the candy packet. He seemed to be deep in thought, and as much as you wanted to ask what was on his mind you forced your mouth to stay shut.
Sure, you were somewhat comfortable around him and you assumed he was comfortable around you, but you knew that there wasn’t any friendship foundation, you had no right to pick around his brain— no matter how intrigued you were.
So you stayed silent, while the hybrid beside you happily chewed away at the gummy bears he had begged for.
As your brother’s neighbourhood approached, Seokjin finally decided to talk. He wriggled around until he was angled enough to look over your smaller body.
He thought you were pretty. Very pretty.
The way you smelt was enchanting, always leaving him dizzy and fumbling for words, just like now.
He felt like a fish out of water, his mouth opening and closing, eyebrows pulled together in frustration as he tried to spit out words, any words. Just something so he didn’t look like an idiot for another second.
“Don’t freak out.”
When your head shot over, a crack sounding from the joints making him cringe, he wanted to melt into his seat. He felt his neck and cheeks turn red, an awkward laugh forced passed his lips.
“Sorry— sorry. I just meant, don’t let Yoongi make you feel uncomfortable.” He clarified, mentally kicking his abrupt outburst. When you raised an eyebrow he took it as a signal to continue.
“Yoongi can be stiff?” He paused, considering his words. “He can be two ways, blunt and sort of arrogant— which he isn’t I promise!”
“Or, he’s cocky and imposing. He’ll try to push your buttons, find out what makes you uncomfortable or mad.” He explained, clicking his tongue as he thought. “But don’t worry, Hoseok and Namjoon keep him in line.”
When the car fell silent Seokjin felt his veins turn to ice. The last thing he wanted was for you to be uncomfortable, or scared. He’d leave yoongi out in the cages before he allowed that.
“I grew up with Jay, I’m immune to annoying boys.”
The smile on your lips, although forced, relaxed him slightly. You really seemed to be trying, even if it wasn’t for them and more so for your brother, he appreciated it. It made his insides feel like marshmallows.
He watched your fingers tap on the grip of the steering wheel, your lips sucked in thin between your teeth as you thought. A cute habit of yours Jin had picked up on almost instantly.
“I’ll be next to you, I won’t leave your side!” He promised, a hand over his heart and the other up in the air. “Scouts honour— and I can say that.”
The proud grin on his plush lips made you break out into a small smile of your own.
“And the other boy?”
Seokjin dropped a red candy into his mouth, chewing twice before speaking. “Hoseok?” He looked to you for confirmation, seeing your curt nod he continued.
“Hobi is playful, he gets along well with the younger boys. He can be a bit much, he’s loud. But he’s a good guy, you don’t have to worry about him.”
“Hoseok— oh for Christ’s sake! Get off! All of you out, they’ll be back any minute now!”
Namjoon’s scolding voice could be heard throughout the entire house, not that it mattered. Everyone was gathered in the one tiny space.
The tiny office space that had been converted into a makeshift bedroom was bursting at its seams with the six men all huddled in.
The youngest three, Jeongguk, Taehyung and Jimin had snuck in to play on the PC’s while you were missing. Jimin hadn’t been interested in playing, so instead he took the chance to snoop through your belongings.
Hoseok, lonely after a week of separation, found his brothers quickly. But his original mission, finding the maknaes, was abandoned the moment your scented room hit his senses. Your perfume and natural musk stuck to everything in the room, almost as if you had lived in the space your whole life.
It was mouth watering.
Ignoring Jimin, who watched the bigger hybrid worriedly, Hoseok joined in the snooping. Mostly just looking through books and sniffing sweaters before getting bored and collapsing onto the fold out bed, an excited laugh filling the quiet room as he rolled over the unmade sheets.
It didn’t take long for Hoseok and Jimin arguing over the small bed to wake up Yoongi. But unfortunately he got to the mess a little late, arriving just as Namjoon did. The younger boy practically tore out his hair as he tried to remove his pack from the room.
Failing, obviously.
The situation was quite funny to the sleepy hybrid. Yoongi’s snickering was infuriating the Wolf hybrid further, his anger and panic almost over powering the soft feminine smell that you had left behind.
“— Jeongguk you know you aren’t supposed to be in here! Taehyung, you’re supposed to be making sure he doesn’t cause trouble, not helping!” Namjoon groaned, head in palms.
The youngest two barely looked away from the screens, their eyes only momentarily flickering over to Namjoon. So instead Jimin piped up, stepping out from behind the much taller hybrid.
“We just thought since she was gone we could take advantage—“
“You thought it would be okay to sneak through someone’s personal belongings!?”
The fox hybrid turned bright pink, his ears flattening to the top of his head. Guilt flooded his features as he practically dislocated his fingers behind his back.
“That wasn’t my intention—“
Their leader was livid, and not even for being disobeyed. He was familiar with the feeling— jealousy. They all smelt like you, and now your room smelt of them.
You smelt like someone other than him— and to make it worse, your musk had been mixed with multiple other male hybrids. It made his stomach churn.
“Your intentions don’t matter anymore.” He snapped, pointing to the door where Yoongi rested. “Out, all of you.”
Not a single person made an effort to move, all five pairs of eyes locked on their leader almost as if they were daring him to try and remove the group. The whole situation was amusing to Yoongi who still hadn’t said a word to his brothers, just watched everything as he usually did.
But the sound of your tires crunching on the gravel driveway sent the boys flying for the front door before an argument could breakout, much to his disappointment.
Yoongi and Jeongguk were the only two that waited in the living room, not reacting to your arrival with enthusiasm.
“Y/N! You’re home!” Taehyung cheered, running out the front door, ignoring the stinging pain of the sharp rocks stabbing into his bare feet.
Before the monkey hybrid could pull you into his body for a hug he was yanked to a halt by Jin.
“Help with the bags first.” He scolded, shoving the heavier bags into the younger boy's arms.
Whining Taehyung obeyed, his knuckles turning white as he practically ran to dump the bags in the kitchen. Namjoon and Jimin followed in Taehyung's direction, arms full with heavy bags until everything was unpacked.
It was after everything was put away where it needed to be that Taehyung engulfed you in his arms, nuzzling his nose into the crook of your neck. He was breathing in so heavily you felt like the boy was about to inhale your skin.
“You were gone for so long--” He paused, his arms tightening on you as he shuffled around. Your back was now facing everyone so Taehyung could glare at his elder. “You hogged her on purpose!”
Seokjin groaned, the younger boy's accusation not even bothering him. He knew his brothers had grown attached to their temporary carer. He was however beginning to worry that everyone was experiencing the same feelings. Your original four weeks of house sitting was officially up tomorrow, and he felt selfish knowing you were stuck here until the government decided otherwise, and not only their government but the Netherlands too.
He had been so excited the moment he heard you step out the car. The moment your car tires had stopped crunching on gravel and your door swung open the strong scent of Spring hit him-- despite it being WInter. You smelt fresh, like flowers and pollen, and yet sweet like sugar. You smelt perfect.
The first time he saw you, the night you come out with their meals he almost dropped to his knees to worship you. Long (H/C), wavy hair hung down your back, messy and slightly knotted from your hands attacking it. Your glasses were dangerously low on your nose as you struggled to drag the chunk of elk meat across the ground. Your lips were pouted, but he could tell that even if you weren’t sulking they would look nearly the same. You were pretty like a doll. Small, petite shoulders and rounded hips and plush thighs he dreamed of falling asleep on.
You were perfect, and his.
Until he realised, maybe you weren’t just for him.

Itadakimasu!! | Part 11: I'm Sorry (Written Chapter)
word count: 3.1k
The Mixtape: Thinking of you | CA, 1979
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The music that pooled out of Onigiri Miya was anything but what you expected.  A small smile crept up onto your face - despite your best efforts - and with a featherlight touch, you crept into the restaurant, silently thanking the soft jazz for drowning out the creaks as you pushed the door open in search of a certain chef.
Osamu stood at the sink, hands working some leftover dishes from the work day. He hummed softly along to the music, and it surprised you just how nice  he sounded - how his deep hum complemented the honey voice that dripped through the speakers; rich, thick, and soft like velvet. You padded into the kitchen, clutching the wine and apron closer to your frame so as not to bump it on anything that could give you away, and allowed yourself a few minutes to listen and appreciate before ultimately ruining the moment.
“I didn’t know you could sing, Miya.” You brought a hand up to suppress a giggle as he stiffened and dropped the plate he had been washing with a loud clatter. Osamu bowed his head and cleared his throat, loud enough to drown out the music for a brief moment before it ultimately pervaded the kitchen once more. He grabbed the nearest towel to dry his hands before reaching for the remote, the music ceasing with a quick click. Once he turned around, your eyes immediately fell on the dusted pink that settled onto his cheeks, and you did your best to ignore the warmth that ignited in your chest at the sight.
"So, Etta James, huh?" Osamu coughed awkwardly, turning his attention back toward the sink to finish up the last few dishes that lingered in the basin.
"Ya know Etta James?" An affirming hum left your lips as you placed the bottle of wine and your apron on the island, eyes flitting over the rustic kitchen in search of wine glasses.
The kitchen was a decent size, the bright wooden counters and cabinets a stark contrast to the dark iron of the appliances, but it complemented each other and suited the space well. The soft ivory paint on the walls kept the overall area from being too loud compared to the rest of the restaurant, and you wondered if Kita was behind the greenery that added a lush, vibrant addition to the otherwise plain shop. Your eyes landed on a modest pile of cookbooks stored neatly in the corner, and you let out a huff of victory as you made your way over to the wine glasses that sat in a windowed cabinet above them.
"My parents were big fans, they've always had a funny fascination with America," you explained, and from the corner of your eye you saw him nod. The two of you relished in the, for once, comfortable beats of silence that followed, and you were surprised when he - for a second time since you had met him - decided to be the one break it.
"My Ma used to have this busted up, old, mix tape that she would play every night when she made dinner. Got it at a flea market when she spent a semester abroad in California. She always talked about how she wished she could visit again." The fondness in his voice made your heart squeeze. You busied yourself, listening intently as you placed two wine glasses onto the counter and filled them generously. "Eventually the cassette broke from years of abuse, but I managed to find the songs and make her a playlist. She still listens to it, every night, and I guess I got so used to it that it feels almost...wrong, to cook without hearin' it in the background, even though I'm not home anymore." You slid one glass over to him and he raised a brow at it, a soft smile pointed your way.
"I think ya skimped me a bit," he joked, and you chuckled sheepishly, a hand coming to scratch the back of your neck.
"What can I say, I like my wine." He chuckles as you reach for the small remote.
"You didn't have to stop it, you know. I love me some Etta," you said, and his smile widened ever so slightly as you pressed play, the smooth voice fluttering through the speakers once more, softer this time as you adjusted the volume. You lifted the wine glass to your lips, taking a tentative first sip. The second the bittersweet liquid hit your tongue, you closed your eyes and sighed into the familiarity. It flashed you back to Tokyo; the seemingly endless nights on the balcony with Tendou and Semi, your drunken laughter rivaling the music in volume as Semi sang along with fervor - but, really, does anyone sound good when they're nearly a bottle deep?
Reality slammed into you like a meteor, and you were instantly struck back into the present moment, meeting Osamu's eyes as he watched you curiously. You felt the warmth crawl up your neck from the embarrassment, and you cleared your throat in the hopes that you could divert his attention to literally anything else.
"So,  are you gonna teach me how to properly make some Onigiri tonight?" His eyes fell on the apron you brought, the one he gifted to you, and his eyebrows shot up in surprise as his lips settled into a playful smirk.
"Who said anythin' about 'teach'? I said I'd show ya how I make it; I didn' say nothin' about teachin' ya."
"And miss out on learning how to make Onigiri Miya's signature dish? No way." Osamu scoffed as you grabbed your apron and began tying it around your waist. His arms folded in front of him, his lips a thin line. You couldn't tell if he was thinking or already disapproving.
"This was meant to be an apology, you know," he started, but you cut him off.
"I know! And what better apology than by helping me perfect my shaping?" The resigned sigh that followed meant a victory for you, the grin proof enough for both of you that you had won. "So, what are we making today?"
"I figured I'd keep it simple tonight. Ya like fatty tuna?" Of course you do.  Who doesn’t? "Great, let's get started then."
Tumblr media
To be honest, you weren't expecting Osamu to be as patient with you as he was. Even though you were decently acquainted with the 'art form' that was Onigiri (as so eloquently and dramatically described by Osamu), you decided to entertain him and pretend to struggle with every step - over shredding the tuna, spilling the spices, adding too much mayo - in the minor hope that you could catch him stressed and maybe a bit frustrated - but to your somewhat disappointment, mostly pleasant surprise, every effort to get at least a furrowed brow or a groan was met with a warm smile, sometimes a breathy chuckle, and a strong pair of arms gently guiding you through the correct steps.
It was as equally frustrating as it was endearing.
"Now ya wanna dip yer hands into the dish of water I left on the side for ya, yeah, great, that's it - now grab a pinch of salt - not too much, just a pinch, and ya wanna rub it into yer hands to prep for the rice."
"What if I have a cut somewhere?"
"Do ya have a cut?"
"Well, not that I know of, but what if there's a cut I don't know about?"
"Well then I guess we'll find out soon, won' we?"
You huffed, but nonetheless pinched the tiny mountain of salt and collected a modest amount before tentatively rubbing it into your hands. Your shoulders were stiff the entire time, prepared for the sudden sting on the off chance the salt decided to acquaint itself with an unknown wound on your hand. You heard Osamu stifle a laugh, and your eyes met his as he smirked at your cautious form.
"Stop staring at me, focus on your own stupid rice ball." He laughed - loudly, beautifully - and you felt your hands tremble the slightest bit as you tried to put all of your focus on making a stupid, dumb triangle out of some stupid, dumb rice.
"Need some help?" You merely grumbled in response as the little bundle of rice and filling crumbled in your hands, despite your feeble attempts at shaping it. He set his own, perfectly shaped, onigiri aside and scooched over to you, his arms reaching around your form, chest pressed lightly against your back. "Yer pressing in too softly, so the rice isn't holding. Cup yer hands like this-" he cupped your hands within his own "-just like that. Now press a little firmer, like this." You were trying your best to pay attention to what he was showing you, you really were - but you couldn't help but marvel at how soft his hands were. You expected them to be rough; calloused from years of cooking, volleyball, and the handyman side hobby, but clearly that wasn’t the case. What kind of lotion did he use to make them feel so smooth? Probably some fancy homemade Aloe Vera lotion Kita made for him, you thought with a scoff.
This new revelation had also made you hyper aware that your hands were not, in fact, soft - countless burns, cuts, and other various acts of carelessness in the kitchen have given your hands a battle worn texture that no amount of hoity toity, all natural Aloe Vera would be able to soften up. He must have been cringing inside just having to touch the absolute burlap that is your haggard looking, stupid hands, oh god-
"Nice job, yer doin' great." The gentleness in his voice plucked you from your inner turmoil, effectively grounding you back to the task at hand. What was once a crumbling mess of rice and tuna now stood a beautifully crafted onigiri, the plump triangle nestled snuggly in between your hands. A gasp left you as you beamed at the finished product, and you whipped your head toward him, twisting slightly within his grip so you could face him properly.
It was then that you realized just how close he was to you.
Whatever words you had planned to say to him died in your throat as your brain tried to comprehend why the hell his face was so close to yours. Osamu seemed to be in a similar state of shock, eyes wide and mouth emulating a fish, opening and shutting when the words weren't coming to him. From the way your own mouth gaped, you imagined you shared a similar expression.
Simultaneously, almost comically, you separated yourselves and severed eye contact, Osamu finding something above you particularly interesting. What exactly, you weren't sure - you were too busy eyeing every minute detail of the remarkably plain tile flooring.
Like an awkward embrace from an old friend you never truly vibed with, the uncomfortable silence settled between you two once again.
It would have almost felt nostalgic, if you didn't hate it with a seething passion.
'And my arms need someone, someone to enfold'
The playful jazz number cut through the silence, and you mentally cursed Etta for clearly not reading the room - your arms were certainly not looking to enfold anybody at the moment, and you imagined it was likely that Osamu felt the same.
You spun back around toward your work station, a quick roll of your shoulders the only indication that you were gonna keep working, because you sure as shit didn't trust whatever would have come out of your mouth had you chosen to open it. Lucky for you, he seemed to get the hint and moved back toward his own work station, making quick work of shaping what he had left, while you continued to struggle, albeit far less than before.
Not a word had been uttered in the moments that followed, the music filling the awkward rift that split between you.
To be honest, you felt guilty that nearly every interaction between you two inevitably dissolved into a dense, unbearable tension; the once lighthearted mood suddenly cracked open like a fault line, the quiet settling between you like dust, and it always felt so thick that trying to bring the moment back its old, enlightened state seemed to take such an immense amount of effort - effort that neither one of you appeared to want to put forth.
You wondered if Osamu shared a similar sentiment.
While you finished up the last of your onigiri, you allowed your attention to flicker to Osamu as he eyed the leftover tuna filling with seemingly great interest, brows furrowed and lips pressed into a thin line. You watched as he scooped the mess onto his finger, putting obvious effort into keeping it balanced as he brought the teetering pile to his lips. Right as he went to close his lips around his finger, the tiny mountain fell, smearing onto his chin and landing on the counter with the saddest little ‘splat’ you'd ever heard. The disappointment he exuded at his misfortune is what ultimately broke you, and you laughed - a bright, gleeful sound that dispelled the suffocating air in an instant, and made you feel like you could finally breathe again (which was ironic, considering how out of breath you were from the incessant giggles that sprung free with absolutely no regard for your lung capacity).
Your hand flew to your mouth in an (admittedly failed) attempt to stifle yourself, as well as possibly save the last shred of rapidly waning dignity Osamu was probably holding onto for dear life. You folded in on yourself, laughter bouncing off the restaurant floor and - again, probably - stabbing directly into Osamu's crumbling pride.
Just as you opened your mouth to apologize, Osamu's loud, beautiful laugh cut through your own, and at the sight of his uncharacteristically bright smile, accompanied with the little smear of mayo on his chin, you realized that, maybe, probably, he was actually doing just fine; and that this - laughing with him - was something you'd never been given the chance to do before, and you'd be lying if you said it wasn't something you wished you could do more often.
You hoped that, maybe, Osamu wanted that, too.
Tumblr media
"So, I take it they didn't teach you how to make onigiri at your fancy schmancy culinary school?" He smiled as you bit back a groan. It was embarrassing, how ugly your onigiri looked next to his. Sure, you were joking about your incompetence in the beginning in the hopes to rile him up a little; but when it came to actually forming the balls, well - there's a reason the spite onigiri you made were small and round.
"You win this time, rice man." He boldly plucked one of your creations and plopped it onto his plate, while you opted for one of his. You knew yours were gonna have too much mayo and way too much seasoning, and you weren't about to subject yourself to that.
You took a bite out of the rice ball and audibly moaned - how is something so simple so delicious? He chuckled, lazy smile draped across his features as he watched you eat. The little sparkle in his eyes didn't go unnoticed by you, and you felt a tiny tug on your heart at how excited he was that you were enjoying his food, even if he wasn't being outwardly showy about it like you tended to be.
"'This time'? Does that mean we're doing this again?" You reached for another one of his as you hummed to yourself.
"Hmm, maybe. Maybe I'll force you to bake me some macarons." You were kidding, of course - you wouldn't wish that upon even your worst enemies - but the way his eyes brightened and he agreed with a small but noticeable lilt to his voice had you wondering if maybe making macarons wouldn't be all that bad if you made them with him.
He bit into your onigiri, taking a far more generous bite than you would have, and you snickered at the obvious attempt to conceal the grimace he had involuntarily made upon swallowing. The way he tiptoed around his critique of your failure was incredibly endearing ("It's not bad, just...mayo-y." "You don't have to eat it, you know." "No no, you worked hard, I'm gonna eat it."), and you felt the first little crack form in the walls you had begun to keep up around him ever since the curry incident.
The longer you enjoyed the food, wine, and - surprisingly - company, the harder it became to ignore the guilt that had settled onto your heart earlier in the evening. What started off as a mere twinge had become a sizeable weight in your chest, growing each moment you spent with him that didn't make you want to launch him off the summit of Mount Fuji.
"I'm sorry," you said, quiet and out of the blue. He shot you a confused smile.
"Pretty sure that's my job right now," he pointed out, and you offered a meek chuckle in response.
"I shouldn't have sold the dessert onigiri. Seeing just how passionate you are makes me realize the gravity of what I did. My ego was a little bruised and instead of being an adult about it, I openly insulted you and Kita by making a mockery of your business. I took it too far, and I'm really sorry about that. I'm sure it goes without saying, but I'm gonna stop making them so you don't have to worry anymore." He was quiet, staring at you in a way he hadn't before, and it made you feel far too exposed, playing with the rice crumbled on your plate as you waited for a reaction.
"I'm sorry, too. I only said those things because the idea of you expanding yer menu terrified me. Yer an amazin' chef, and I honestly think ya could run me out of business one day." His voice was soft, too; and you felt the crack grow considerably wider, your vulnerability peeking through pinched brows and hands that you couldn't seem to keep still. "I've always wanted to open up a location in Tokyo, and expand the menu. Onigiri made sense because it's always been a source of comfort, but as much as I love makin' em, there're others things I wanna make, too."
The air between you was...light. The weight that usually settled itself into your shoulder blades seemed to have dissipated, and you couldn't tell if it was the wine, the time, or Osamu. Maybe it was all three.
"I...I like it better when we don't hate each other," you said.
"I never hated you," he said.
"I never hated you either," you admitted.
"Does that mean we can stop pretending we do?" He looked you, and you saw hope.
You smiled.
"Yeah," you said. "We can."

Fun facts -
Osamu listening to old 60′s love songs just did something to me ok, especially my girl Etta
Kita is 100% responsible for the plants
Osamu’s mom kept the tape, even after it finally broke beyond repair. It reminds her of Osamu’s father, who she met that summer in Cali
he was another exchange student from Japan. They had a summer fling and inevitably said their goodbyes when the summer was over and he had to fly back home.
They ended up bumping into each other a year after she moved back - and fate has been a big theme for the Miya’s ever since.
Osamu has always felt a little funny about it - it feels too convenient, and he doesn’t like the idea of not being in control of his own path.
He thought your ugly rice balls were disgusting, obviously, and he was sure to eat his own after the first one lmao
A/n - when you haven’t updated in so long you have to look at past chapters to remember how you formatted 😭. Tony believed himself to be an observant man. Pepper was the one who loved to give him credit there. He wasn't sure why he enjoyed the bodyguard gig considering he was meant to only be the family lawyer, but he felt it gave him a chance to see things for what they truly were. People, even the ones who swore they were good at hiding their emotions, had no idea how much they could give away with one look.
He became particularly good at reading you. You had a flurry of emotions. Sometimes you'd go from mischievous to full of rage to content in a matter of minutes. You were a passionate person, and it was no wonder Nat fell for you.
No one understood you the way Nat did, but Tony learned early on. He watched for the slightest movements to know when he needed to pull you out of a situation. And when you were about to get yourself arrested. Again. If he ever needed to find another job, he'd put crisis management as one of his life skills.
You weren't a big fan of crowds, which was why you hated going to indoor malls. You always said the stores were tacky and everything was "too cheap," but you needed something specific for your cousin's wedding. Tony kept his distance while he shopped, but he always kept an eye out for your tells, waiting to see if it all became too much for you. Which, he knew if something was too much for you, it was bad. You were the original definition for chaotic.
You held up a pair of crystal champagne glasses, trying to gauge whether or not it was a good wedding gift. Tony scrunched up his nose and shook his head. Too cliché. You nodded, silently agreeing with him. You let out a frustrated sigh as you set them back down. Meaningful gifts weren't your strong suit.
"Why don't you let me take care of the gift?" Tony offered. "Pep's great at picking things out."
"I don't even want to go to this stupid wedding," you grumbled.
"Nat is going with you."
"She's the only reason I'm going at all."
He hummed. You didn't talk about your family often. He knew better than to touch that subject. Too many times he witnessed you stress shopping after a phone call with your mother.
"Let's go to Bergdorf. I'm tired of being in this mall. It smells like poor people." You looped your arm through Tony's and let him guide you out of the store. Pepper was good at picking out gifts, so you trusted her enough to get it done. And if she didn't, you wouldn't make it a big deal. Your cousin didn't deserve a good gift anyways; you'd just get her a gift card to Red Lobster or something.
You shoved your way through the sea of people, not caring if they had to jump out of the way. You never moved for other people. It was a pet peeve of yours - when people would walk in big groups and take up the whole walkway, forcing everyone around them to squeeze their way through. You never moved. They needed to move around you, and you weren't going to budge on that.
"Y/n?"
You froze, and Tony stopped in his tracks to look down at you. You recognized the voice before you saw his face. Tony saw the brief flash of panic, but it was gone before he could ask about it. You quickly took a deep breath and turned to face Brock.
"I didn't realize you came to this mall," you replied calmly. "You know this area is Nat's territory."
He snorted. "Natasha Romanoff. I heard you two were engaged! I never got to say congrats."
"Well?"
Brock didn't give you his congratulations. Instead, he looked over at Tony and gave him a look of contempt. Tony knew Brock Rumlow from various encounters Nat had with him in the past. He was the leader of Hydra, who had a heavy presence in Staten Island and in parts of New Jersey. They caused a lot of trouble for the other mob families, and Nat always denied making business deals with them. She knew no matter what he claimed, he couldn't be trusted.
But it wasn't Brock that made Tony squirm. It was the way your grip slowly tightened on his arm. Every time Brock moved a little closer to you, you'd fist Tony's jacket sleeve and try to step away. He had seen you anxious before, but this was worse than your usual fits of anxiety. You were terrified - genuinely - of the man standing in front of you.
"You look great, by the way. You look like you put on a few pounds, but it works for you," he added with a charming smile and glanced over his shoulder at the group he was with. "I'll see you around, yeah?"
"Not likely," Tony huffed and lead you through the rest of the mall.
He didn't say anything, but he kept glancing at you every few seconds to catch a glimpse of that fear he saw earlier. Your lips were pressed into a tight line, and the grip you had on his jacket sleeve didn't loosen until you made it through the mall doors. He didn't miss the way you looked over your shoulder to make sure Brock wasn't following you. The last thing Tony wanted to do was assume, but he had a feeling no one in Nat's circle knew your connection to Brock Rumlow; it was something you kept to yourself and it ate you alive from the inside.
You were silent as he helped you into the car. Your gaze fixated on the world outside the window, and you kept the music off, claiming you had a headache. But Tony knew better. These were the subtle signs that you were about to have one of your bad days. If someone like Brock could trigger this, he couldn't just let it go.
"What happened back there?" Tony shifted in the driver's seat, making it clear he wasn't going to drive anywhere until you talked. Nat would have his head if he brought you back in this state. "How do you know Rumlow?"
Your eyes dropped to the circular scar on the inside of your thigh. The same scar that made you chop a man's finger off when he grazed it with his meaty hands. The same scar you never talked about, even when Nat begged you to tell her what happened. You always told her it was an accident, but she never believed it. Not for a second.
You cleared your throat to keep yourself from losing it and looked back at Tony. "I used to be engaged to him. Long before I met Tasha."
"Wait, what? Does she know that?"
"No. He was…" Your bottom lip trembled, and the sight made Tony suck in a breath. "He was a very cruel person, but I don't think he believes that."
"You don’t have to talk about it if you aren't ready, Y/n."
"It's okay," you sighed. "I think I finally should, but I know once I tell you, I have to tell Tasha. And I'm scared she won't look at me the same."
Tony knew that statement wasn't true, but you were allowed to be scared. He wasn't going to dismiss your feelings on it. He took your hand and gave it a little squeeze to reassure you that no matter what comes out of your mouth, he'd be there for you. He was more than your security. More than the lawyer that you liked to give a headache. He was your family, and nothing would ever change that.
You told him about how you met Brock. He was charming, and funny, which you didn't expect from someone linked to Hydra. At the time, he wasn't the leader, and you assumed being involved with Hydra didn't make someone a terrible person. In the beginning of the relationship, he was nothing but kind. He treated you like the queen that you were born to be.
But the second you agreed to marry him, everything changed.
He never let you leave the house. He only allowed to eat when he was around to eat with you, and he kept a lock on the fridge to make sure you couldn't sneak something without him finding out. You lost more weight in the few months you had been with him than you liked to admit.
Brock was obsessed with control. He liked picking your outfits, and he constantly asked for pictures to make sure you were still wearing what he wanted. If he told you not to wear anything, you had to do what he said, even if his friends were over.
Those were the hardest days. He loved to embarrass you, degrade you. One night he made you serve him and his friends in barely-there lingerie. You were so terrified of messing up, your hands shook and you ended up dropping of the beers on the carpet. Brock had been so pissed at you, he put out his cigarette on your thigh and screamed at you to clean it up. And none of his friends said anything about it. They just watched with their sadistic smiles, worshipping the man that could "put a woman in her place."
You were almost certain he was going to kill you before the wedding day. He'd make comments about how you were nothing without him - how if you even looked at the door, he'd do whatever it took to keep you from escaping.
"He kicked me out one night because he met another woman," you sniffled. "Someone who he claimed was more of a woman than I'd ever be. I was so surprised because I didn't think he would ever let me go, but he basically tossed me out with the trash. And maybe I should have been heartbroken, but I wasn't. I felt free in that moment." You let out a watery laugh and dabbed at your eyes to keep the tears from streaming down your face, but it was already too late. "He always told me he loved me, but he never showed it. Never bought me anything new unless he wanted to see me in it. Never let me eat. His words meant nothing because he never backed them up."
Tony hummed in understanding. It all started to make more sense - why you were so obsessed with material goods and Nat buying you things. In your eyes, anyone could say they loved you, but you didn't believe them unless they proved it. Brock did a number on you.
"He forced me to do sexual favors for other men while he watched. I'm almost certain they paid him too, but I could never prove it. Even if I could, who would believe me? It became such a regular occurrence, he forced me to get my tubes tied so I didn't end up pregnant. Told me he didn't want me getting fat and unattractive with someone else's baby." You shook your head. "Seeing him in the mall, acting like he didn't put me through hell, I felt naked. Like he still held his power above my head."
"I'm not saying you have to, but are you going to tell Nat?"
You nodded slowly, swallowing the lump that formed in you throat. "Can we get milkshakes first?"
"Yeah," Tony chuckled. "We can get milkshakes first."
There was so much he wanted to tell you. He wanted to tell you that you were much stronger than you believe considering the shit you had to endure; he wanted to remind you that Nat would never view you as anything besides the woman she was blessed to fall in love with; and he wanted to make sure you knew he was never going to lay a hand on you again. Every word he wished he could say stayed on the tip of his tongue because it didn't feel like the right moment. He knew you needed Nat to be the one to tell you those things, but he still gave your hand another reassuring squeeze.
And that was enough for now.
---
Telling Nat was harder than you expected it to be. The words that came out so easily when you were with Tony were almost impossible to choke out. It was as if you forgot how to breathe when she looked at you with her sad eyes. But you sucked in those sobs and told her everything, even if the tiny voice in your head told you she'd view you as less of a woman too.
You hated that the negative voice always sounded like him. You hated the hold he still had over you after all these years, but the more you talked about it, the lighter you began to feel. The heavy weight on your shoulders disappeared bit by bit.
And when Nat pulled you into her arms, whispering nothing but words of affirmation and comfort, you knew you'd be okay.
You weren't sure how long you stayed in her arms, but when you finally looked up and wiped the tears away, you noticed it was already dark outside. You almost made a joke about how being emotional could make the time fly by, but it took too much effort to laugh right now.
"Let's get you into a bath, okay?" Nat whispered as she helped you off the couch.
"Nat?" You reached up and wiped a stray tear that fell from her eyes. You had been so caught up in yourself, you didn't notice she was crying too. Part of you isn't sure if you've ever seen Nat cry before; she was always so good at keeping her emotion in check. "I'm sorry I never told you. I was so scared-"
"You don't owe me an explanation, kitten. You told me when you were ready to talk about it, and I never would have wanted you to force yourself to tell me before then."
Nat gently caressed the side of your face and pressed a kiss to the tip of your nose. She told you to pour yourself a glass of wine while she fixed your bath, and you gave her a small smile. She already had the expensive bottles chilling for you because you never drank cheap, and you made sure she knew that the day you met.
She turned the faucet on for the tub and waited until she heard you flick on the kitchen light before she pulled out her phone. Nat never kept anything from you, but she didn't want to stress you out more right now.
"It's a little late to be calling, Natasha," Yelena yelled over the music blaring in the background. She must have been at one of the clubs tonight.
"This couldn't wait." Nat spoke quietly, but Yelena could hear her loud and clear. The seriousness in her tone was enough to make anyone listen intently. "I need you to get Barnes, tell him that I have one last person for him to grab for me and I'll never ask for his services again."
It was silent for a moment, and Nat worried this conversation was taking too long. She wouldn't know how to explain herself out of this one if you overheard.
"Who do you want?"
"Brock Rumlow."
She heard the kitchen light flick off again, and she quickly rattled off an address for the drop off to take place before she disconnected. Yelena never asked for details, which is something Nat appreciated. She could relax and trust everything would be ready for her in the morning. For now, all Nat had to do was focusing on taking care of you.
"Sorry for taking so long," you murmured as you sipped from your glass. "I ended up drinking straight from the bottle for a few minutes there."
Nat laughed and gave you a little shrug. "Sometimes we all need a good drink, and I think you definitely earned it."
While she spoke to Yelena on the phone, she made sure to prep the bath the way you liked it. You weren't a huge fan of bubble baths, but you did love Epsom salts and essential oils. Especially lavender. She even remembered to light the unscented candles so their smells didn't clash with the oils. It was the small details that matter the most, and you were filled with so much gratitude in that moment, it was hard not to shed a few more tears.
You inhaled deeply once you slid into the tub, letting the aroma of the lavender fill your senses and relax you. The steam coming from the water stuck to the parts of your skin that weren't immersed in the water, and as you leaned your head back, you imagined the harsh words of Brock Rumlow melting off our body.
Nat smiled at the way your eyes fluttered close. She thought it was adorable how easily you slipped into relaxation mode.
"Aren't you going to join me?" You weren't really asking her despite making it seem like you were. It was your subtle way of telling her to join you without being too demanding - a specialty of yours that Nat could never say no to.
"Of course I am," she replied softly. "Let me just grab another bottle of wine, okay? I have a feeling you're going to drink that one all by yourself."
You giggled. "I love how you know me so well."
As she excused herself to the kitchen, her phone vibrated in her pocket. A single text from Yelena: Barnes is in, will be ready by 6am. She wrote back, telling her to dip into some of the work funds to give to him as a thank you for getting the job done on a time crunch. She felt bad for pulling the man out of retirement, but he was the only one she trusted to get the job done discreetly.
Her phone buzzed again.
Already taken care of. See you tomorrow.
---
Bucky waited for Nat outside of the warehouse. He leaned against the doorway, his hands stuffed into his pockets. The dark circles under his eyes made Nat's stomach churn. She shouldn't have pulled him away from his home so late at night, but she acted purely on impulse. Brock Rumlow hurt the one person in this world she loved the most, and he couldn't let him get away with it. Not anymore anyways.
"Thank you for doing this."
"This is my last job, Nat," he said firmly. "I know Wanda works at the bar with you, but she doesn't know I used to be your hitman. I'd like to keep it that way."
"I know, and I'm sorry. I wouldn't ask you to kill anyone ever again that's why I just asked for a snatch."
He sighed through his nose and gestured towards the warehouse. "So, what he do?"
"I can't go into the details, but he's a sick person. It's time someone took care of him."
Bucky didn't prod her for any more details. He didn't really want to know. When Nat met you, she tried her best to keep the killing to a minimum, which meant Bucky could retire. He never said it out loud, but he was grateful. The amount of blood on his hands kept him awake at night before he met Wanda. But some nights he'd still find himself covered in sweat and screaming about what used to be. He didn't want to get sucked back into this life.
The less he knew, the better.
Nat thanked him once more and made her way into the warehouse where Yelena was already waiting for her.
Rumlow was tied to a chair, his face already covered in bruises and small cuts. He must have put up a fight when Bucky tried to grab him.
"I should have known you had something to do with this," he spat. A glob of blood landed on the concrete in front of Nat's boot, but she wasn't fazed by it. "What are you going do? Torture me? Get me to spill Hydra's secrets?"
"You're not here because I want Hydra intel, Rumlow." Nat ran her fingers along the tools set out for her. "I'm here because you hurt someone close to me, and I can't risk you walking around the city and running into her again." She grabbed one of the smaller knives and moved to stand in front of Rumlow. She dragged the blade along the inside of his forearm, drawing just enough blood to make him hiss in pain. "For every bruise you put on her body, I will cut you. For every horrible thing you and your friends did to her, I will make you bleed. And then, I'll cut out your tongue. Maybe force you to choke on it - I haven't really decided that, but I can promise you, your death will be painful."
She held out her hand and waited for Yelena to place the pack of cigarettes in it. It was something she asked her to pick up this morning. A small detail she felt the need to incorporate today.
Nat quit smoking long before she met you, but she took the chance to get one drag in just to make Rumlow squirm. The longer she took to do anything else to him, the more paranoid she became. And she loved when she could see the fear in men's eyes. The same fear they sparked in others filled their hearts, and she planned on making sure it overflowed in Rumlow's.
He twitched when she examined the bright red end of the cigarette and blew smoke into his face. He even moved to spit in her face, but Nat grabbed his face and jammed the lit end into his cheek before he could.
Rumlow didn't scream, but she was okay with that. She'd get the screams out of him soon enough. She was a patient woman.
"Don't worry, Rumlow, that's the easy part," Nat snarled. "We're going to have so much fun. And you wanna know the best part? No one will ever care enough to go looking for you because you're nothing, and I promise, you will die knowing that."

i want your midnights
my @lgbtincomics secret gift exchange gift for @kaurwreck!
“So… I heard you have a date for tonight’s party, Hel.” Dinah’s voice thrummed with barely contained glee, even over comms, as Black Canary and Huntress sped through the streets of Gotham toward that night’s (really, early morning - it was 2 am) target.
Helena’s reply came tersely through Dinah’s earpiece, “It’s not a date.”
“Well, I heard from Babs who heard from Steph who heard from Tim who heard from Kon who heard from Lois who heard from Maggie who heard from Kate… that a certain ex-detective Montoya will be accompanying you to the Clocktower festivities tonight. Sure sounds like a date to me.”
“Can we try and keep our personal lives out of the field tonight?” Barbara broke in to reprimand them.
Dinah cheerily responded, “Well, we never have before, so I don’t really see any point in starting now, O.”
A deeply resigned sigh came over the comms to which Dinah cackled and Helena gave a begrudging smile under her motorcycle helmet.
Barbara’s voice crackled across the comms again. “This is a simple mission, guys. Get in, make sure Seeber gets the message, then get out. Got it?”
“We’ve got it, O. After spending the past month taking down this dick’s trafficking business, tonight will be a breeze,” Helena replied.
“It’s just too bad Zinda’s not with us - she could really put the fear of God in this bastard,” Dinah chimed in.
“Canary, we agreed this was a two-woman job -  and besides, Zinda’s been hard at work decorating the Clocktower since midnight.”
“Only because you wouldn’t let me start any earlier!” Zinda’s brassy voice came through their earpieces loud and clear. “This clocktower will not become party ready all by itself!”
“Ooh that reminds me,” Dinah said in a sing-song tone. “Hel - you need to look like an absolute BABE for Renee tonight. Please let me take you shopping for a date outfit this afternoon?”
“Not! A! Date!”
____________________________________________________________
Is tonight a date?
Renee’s mind was always filled with a hundred different thoughts at any given moment - cases she was working on, what to have for dinner, various exercise regimens and dozens of other things, all competing for her full and undivided attention. Most days, she’s a consummate pro at multitasking but, this December 31, one thought returned again and again to the forefront of her mind.
She paced all around her apartment, careful to step over the piles of gear strewn haphazardly on the floor, as she pondered whether or not Helena Bertinelli, her occasional (though more and more frequent) partner in vigilantism, had invited her to a New Year’s Eve party tonight as a friend-date or … as a date-date. The party was being hosted by Helena’s crime-fighting team, the Birds of Prey, and, according to her, was going to be a relatively small affair attended by teammates and a few affiliated heroes. Which did little to assuage Renee’s anxiety.
Renee Montoya is not typically one to worry about such silly and mundane things as whether the girl she (potentially) likes likes her back. Renee Montoya sleeps with women and breaks their hearts and she doesn’t do the whole dating thing. (Not anymore. Not after Daria. Not after Kate.) So to feel her heart jumping in her throat like she’s a damn schoolgirl again is not a familiar sensation and she doesn’t like it, not one bit.
Outside her windows, the telltale early signs of a winter storm were taking place. The wind picked up, whistling sharply through the alley below and carrying white flurries along the way. Overhead, thick, gray storm clouds menaced the city of Gotham, giving no indication that they were going to dissipate any time before midnight.
Just as Renee felt herself about to begin dissecting and analyzing every interaction she’d had with Helena since she asked her to attend the party with her, a sharp rap sounded from her door. Trying to ignore the sweat gathering under her armpits, she ran her hands through her hair one final time and went to open the door.
“Hey, I know I didn’t buzz up, but your doorman recognized me, I think from when we had drinks a few nights ago, uh, and he just let me up, so, yeah…” Helena trailed off as she took in the funny expression on Renee’s face. “You feeling okay, Montoya?”
Renee was not, in fact, doing okay. In fact, the very sight of Helena Bertinelli standing in her doorway, looking absolutely, drop-dead gorgeous had driven all the air out of her lungs and all coherent thought out of her brain. Helena’s dark curls were piled high on her head with a few stray curls framing her face and she wore a black cropped turtleneck with the tightest pair of leather pants Renee had quite possibly ever seen. Fortunately, at Helena’s confused expression, a few synapses in Renee’s brain began firing again and she managed to stop looking like she had recently been concussed.
“Oh, um, I was just, uh, thinking … it’s kind of cold for, y’know, a turtleneck.”
Oh, God, now she knows you were looking at her abs! Say something different! Anything!
“Not that there’s, uh, anything wrong with that, you look great, I mean, you always look great. Um. D’you wanna come in and drink something?”
Great save, Montoya. How are you the same suave lesbian who managed to bed a woman in Kahndaq of all places?
As Renee held the door open for Helena to enter her apartment, she tried to keep her eyes from gazing too long at any ... particular part of her body and, in doing so, missed the shy smile on Helena’s lips at Renee’s flustered greeting. Helena sauntered into the kitchenette area and sat down on a barstool at the counter.
“What do you have?”
“I’ve got lemonade, OJ, water, of course, and some non-alcoholic eggnog that Kate and Mags brought over earlier this week!”
Renee managed to find two clean glasses and turned to Helena, waiting for her response. She noticed an almost pensive furrow in her brow that definitely wasn’t there before. The playful light in her eyes also seemed to have vanished.
“Just some water will be fine. I’ll need to be well-hydrated to withstand even one of Zinda’s drinks tonight.”
“Alright, then,” Renee shrugged and grabbed a pitcher from her fridge, filling the two glasses and handing one over to Helena. “Are Zinda’s drinks really that potent?”
“Oh, God,” Helena snorted in the middle of her first sip. “Just be grateful you don’t drink anymore because that shit could take down a fucking elephant.”
Renee inhaled sharply through her nose as she drank deeply from her glass of water.
Helena flushed deeply and shot an apologetic look across the counter. “Shit, Renee, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to make light of -”
Renee cut her off, “It’s fine, really, Helena. We should be heading out now anyway.”
She made her way briskly over to the entrance table where she kept her wallet and keys and shoved both into her jacket pockets. As she opened the door, she turned back to look at Helena, who was still looking rather like a kicked puppy, and gave her a sharp smile.
“Come on, princesa, you’re the one who knows where the fuck where we’re going.”
As Helena rushed out the door and started toward the stairs, Renee turned to lock the closed door behind her and took a slow, deep breath.
So not a date.
______________________________________________________________
As soon as the elevator doors slid open, Renee and Helena were hit by a barrage of sound and lights from the loft space at the top of the Gotham Clocktower. Stepping out into the brightly lit, colorfully decorated and rambunctious party from the cold, damp and dark streets of Gotham was a jarring experience. Seeing the party already at full tilt, sent a fresh prickle of nerves through Renee, when she felt a cold hand slip into hers and squeeze it tight.
She glanced up at Helena’s face. Much of the tension from the motorcycle ride over and the brief yet eternal ride up the elevator seemed to have disappeared upon their entrance into Helena’s second home. Helena smiled softly at Renee.
“Don’t worry. I’ll show you around.”
As Helena tugged her further into the celebration, Renee felt her heart give an involuntary skip.
Stop it, she admonished internally. She’s just being friendly.
“This is the kiddie table!” Helena’s face looked almost completely different with the giant, shit-eating grin she sported as she gestured to six young girls grouped around a flat-screen television, all with video game controllers in their hands and surrounded by bowls of various snacks and bottles of soda.
“Just because you guys are ancient doesn’t make us kids,” fired back a tall, blonde girl in a purple sweater without even looking up from the TV screen. “Anyways, Cass and I are only here because Zinda promised to slip us one of her special cocktails at midnight.”
Helena narrowed her eyes at the shorter, dark-haired girl sprawled out next to the blonde, who just smiled and gave a what-can-you-do shrug.
“Not under my watch, she’s not. Unless we’re suddenly a year in the future and you both are 21, there will be no underage drinking tonight.”
“Can’t be watching us… when you’re busy watching her,” the dark-haired girl replied smugly.
Helena sputtered violently at that and the entire group dissolved into giggles. Renee noted that all of them were teenagers with the somewhat incongruous exception of a nine-year old who was busy shoving handfuls of M&M’s into her mouth. Two of the girls were blonde, three, including the nine-year old, had black hair and one of them had bright red hair.
Blushing furiously, Helena spoke loudly over their snickers, “ANYWAYS. These gremlins are Stephanie, Cass, Mia, Lori, Charlie and Sin and they are all little shits. Enjoy your video game, girls, Renee and I are going to go talk with the adults now.” She said the last part pointedly, giving a killer stink eye to the rambunctious group. Tilting her head, she signaled to Renee that it was time to move along.
“If you don’t mind me asking, Helena…” Renee began talking as they weaved their way past countless obnoxious New Year’s themed decorations.
“What the hell are the Birds of Prey doing partying with a bunch of kids?” Helena flashed her signature sharp smile at Renee who felt her treacherous heart thump a little harder.
“Yeah, pretty much,” she’d only worked with the Birds a few times but she’d never seen any of those girls with them before. Although, a few of them did look awfully familiar.
“They’re family,” Helena replied. When Renee only looked more confused at her response, she explained further, “Steph and Cass are Spoiler and Batgirl. Cass is basically Babs’ daughter and where Cass goes, Steph goes. Mia is Speedy and like a surrogate daughter to Dinah and Sin is Dinah’s actual, adopted daughter. Lori and Charlie tried to get into the superhero business a while back and Babs basically took them in. She keeps them housed and fed and going to school and loves them like daughters, too. So, yeah, they’re family.”
Renee and Helena had stopped walking at some point in their conversation and were now standing between a set of giant, glittery numbers spelling out the upcoming year and the largest, most elaborate display of cupcakes Renee had ever seen. While Helena talked, Renee tried her hardest not to stare at her exposed abdomen or her leather-clad legs and, in doing so, found herself watching her full, dark purple-painted lips move as they formed words that Renee was definitely supposed to be listening to. After they’d stopped moving for a few seconds, Renee’s gaze snapped up to Helena’s sparkling brown eyes and blushed at her knowing look.
“That’s … pretty awesome that you guys have, like, a superhero family,” Renee ended up saying.
“Yeah, it kind of is.” Helena’s hand brushed against Renee’s.
Renee stopped breathing for a second.
“HEY YOU LOVE BIRDS! Stop hiding over here and come join the par-tay!”
Popping out from behind the giant, glittery 2 came Zinda Blake in all her obnoxiously loud and exuberantly happy glory. She was wearing the classic bartender outfit of slim, dark pants and black vest over a white shirt and her blonde hair was pulled back into a ponytail. She had a devilish smirk on her face as she wiggled her eyebrows at Renee and Helena.
“Zinda! We weren’t even-” Helena started to snap at her but Zinda just laughed and turned back the direction she came from.
“I’m just bustin’ your chops, Hel. But you really should come say hi to some more people or they’ll start wondering what you two are up to.”
Zinda winked at the two of them then began walking toward another group of women, clearly expecting Helena and Renee to follow, which the two women did after only a brief glance at each other’s embarrassed face.
In quick succession, Helena greeted and Renee was introduced to a Cindy, Kendra (who she was pretty sure was freaking Hawkgirl), Sonia, Kate (Spencer, not Kane) and Dawn. They were all friendly and welcoming (and evidently more than a little drunk) but Renee could have sworn as soon as Zinda led them away, they all started whispering and … did money exchange hands?
Renee still wasn’t sure whether she’d made the right decision, deciding to come to this party with Helena. She obviously enjoyed spending time with her and the party wasn’t awful or anything, but she just felt … out of place among all these team members, who knew each other so well. She had turned down a quiet night at Kate and Maggie’s for this! And why? Because she thought, just maybe, Helena had invited her because she was interested in her as more than a friend? Renee felt stupid for even thinking that could be the case. Even if Helena did think she was attractive, she’d never once done anything to truly indicate that she felt something romantic for Renee. And after her comment back at Renee’s apartment … well, they didn’t talk much about Renee’s past struggles with addiction but Renee felt surer than ever that anyone who knew that about her would never be able to feel anything more than pity for her.
Lost deeply in thought, Renee hadn’t even realized that they had reached the elaborate bar at the other end of the loft. Zinda slid behind the counter and started mixing, in Renee’s opinion, far too many liquids from different bottles together in an enormous mixer. Seated right by the bar was Barbara Gordon, Oracle herself, and Renee’s old boss’s daughter. She still couldn’t quite wrap her head around Jim Gordon’s little girl being the mysterious and all-knowing Oracle that every superhero and vigilante had asked for help from at least once. And sprawled across Barbara’s lap, her fish-net clad legs dangling over the arm of her wheelchair was Dinah Lance, the Black Canary. Even though Renee had met Dinah and even worked briefly with her before, she still felt a bit awe-struck in the presence of the stunning blonde. Her reverie was quickly ended, though, as Black Canary was, well, pretty damn plastered, if the empty glass in her hand and the glazed look in her eyes was any indication.
“Whatever was in this drink, Zind, is fucking magical,” she slurred in Zinda’s general direction while Barbara ran her hands through her sweaty, messy hair. “I feel unshtoppa- umshoppab-”
Dinah frowned as she struggled to articulate the word, then shrugged, “I feel like dancing! Take me back to the dance floor, Babs!” She ordered imperiously while stumbling off of her lap and beginning to stagger back to where some of the others were dancing to some music that was undoubtedly selected by one of the teenagers. Now that Dinah was out of Barbara’s lap, Renee could see that the mighty Oracle was also wasted, though not nearly as much, and she watched as she wheeled off after Dinah.
Helena had a funny look on her face as she also followed her two best friends progress across the room. After a minute, she realized she was staring and turned back to Renee, who was feeling and looking quite lost again.
She started to apologize, “I’m so sorry, Renee, I really didn’t think they’d be this drunk already. I know they’re the only other ones you really know here and I thought -”
Renee cut her off. “It’s New Year’s Eve, people get drunk, it’s fine, Helena. It really doesn’t bother me.”
Helena continued to look upset, though, so Renee turned to Zinda and asked, “Any chance you’ve got something non-alcoholic back there that’s not soda?”
Zinda paused mid-shake.
“On New Year’s Eve, lady? You’ve gotta be kiddin’ me! I’ll mix you up something so divine, you won’t even taste the alcohol-”
As Zinda spoke, three things occurred in quick succession. Helena attempted to leap over the bar, whether to slap a hand over Zinda’s unthinking mouth or strangle her, it’s impossible to know, because even Helena Bertinelli can only do so much while wearing the world’s tightest leather pants. Instead of cleanly soaring over the bar, she crashed into it, knocking bottles and glasses every which way. As everyone in the tower started to look toward the commotion, Renee Montoya took off toward the closest set of doors, which turned out to lead to a small balcony on the south-facing side of the tower. And, lastly, Zinda Blake’s brain caught up with that fast-shooting mouth of hers and she remembered that Helena had already told them that Renee abstained from drinking, and while she could be around alcohol, maybe don’t offer her any?
“Hel, sweetie, I’m so sorry. I wasn’t even thinkin’,” Zinda said, as Helena peeled herself off of the bartop and ignoring Zinda’s apologies and the mess of glass and liquor, rushed to the very doors Renee had just gone through.
Helena burst through the double doors out into the freezing, wintry air. She wasn’t sure what she expected to see out there but it almost certainly wasn’t Renee laughing her ass off, already covered in melting snowflakes and surrounded by an assortment of incongruously green plants.
Pausing in confusion, Helena managed one word, “What-”
Renee caught sight of her disheveled and distraught appearance and just started laughing harder.
“How are there … fucking tropical plants growing out here?” She wheezed. “It’s below fucking freezing.”
Still baffled, Helena responded, “Um… during a mission, we, er, liberated some of Poison Ivy’s experiments and after Babs determined they weren’t dangerous or anything, she put them out here. Turns out they’re, like, immune to the weather or some shit.”
“That actually makes a lot of sense.”
As Helena was talking, Renee slowly pulled herself together and grew more somber. Helena started to move toward her.
“I should’ve known this was a bad idea.”
“...what?” Helena stopped in her tracks at Renee’s words.
“Coming here. To a Birds of Prey New Year’s Eve party. I don’t belong here… I’m the Question not fucking Hawkgirl or Black Canary or whatever.”
“I don’t have any special powers, either.” Helena frowned. “And you do belong here. Because I invited you.”
Renee shook her head and turned to look at the view from the balcony. “Kate said this was a bad idea. I should’ve just listened to her.”
Helena’s frown grew bigger. “Of course, this is really about Kate Kane,” she muttered.
Renee whipped around. “What the fuck do you mean ‘of course it’s really about Kate Kane?”
“I mean that you’re still in love with her! And you can’t let yourself be happy with anything or anyone that’s not her!” Helena’s eyes widened as the words left her lips and she slapped her hand over mouth, but it was too late.
Renee’s eyes narrowed. “You think I’m still in love with Kate? And so, what, you invited me to this party to try and protect me from her? Just like you’re trying to protect me from alcohol? I don’t need your fucking protection, Helena!”
Helena reeled backwards at that. “No! I-I didn’t- I never-” She slowed. “You think I’m trying to protect you, Renee?”
“Well, yeah,” Renee answered. “That’s why you can’t act normal around me and alcohol and you freak out whenever I talk about Kate…” She trailed off at the look on Helena’s face.
“Renee… I don’t think I need to protect you. You’re just about the biggest badass in Gotham City, if not the entire planet!” Helena exclaimed.
“Bigger than Batman?”
“Easily bigger than Batman.” Helena started to move toward Renee again. “I - I was acting so weird tonight because I’m really fucking nervous, okay? And, I know I can be an inconsiderate bitch sometimes, and there’s so much alcohol on New Year’s Eve and I just didn’t want to act or say anything bitchy. And so I acted like a fucking idiot instead who thinks you can’t handle being around alcohol. I’m so stupid,” Helena spun and slammed her fist against the wall of the tower.
In the span of just five minutes, Renee had gone from feeling completely and utterly foolish and desperate to this wild, electric buzzing under her skin as Helena explained her actions. She licked her dry lips.
“And… the stuff with Kate…”
Helena didn’t face her. Staring at the wall, she said quietly, “I act weird when you talk about Kate because I know you’re still in love with her and … I’m so in love with you it physically hurts me to hear you be in love with someone who doesn’t love you back.”
Renee tapped on Helena’s shoulder. As Helena turned around, slowly, to face her, Renee slid both her hands up Helena’s muscular arms and grabbed her face gently.
“You idiot,” but she said it like she didn’t really think Helena was an idiot. At all. And she stretched up on her tiptoes and placed the lightest kiss on those stupid purple lips of hers.
Helena’s eyes fluttered shut and Renee couldn’t help admiring the way her long, dark lashes brushed against her cheekbones.
“You’re … not in love with Kate?” Helena whispered, too scared to open her eyes or move a muscle, lest Renee vanish into the dark night.
“Kate… is my best friend. My first love. But she has Maggie, now, and I … I … have you. If you’ll have me?”
Helena smiled tearily and pressed her lips against Renee’s again. This time it was not light and it was not gentle.
And they stood like that, wrapped in each others arms, kissing in the snowy night air, until Zinda opened the doors, Dinah and Babs (both far more sober then they’d been earlier in the night) behind her.
Simultaneously, the trio’s faces moved through showing concern, shock and, finally, happiness, entirely unnoticed by Renee and Helena.
Dinah finally cleared her throat and spoke, “You guys okay out here? Well, midnight’s in ten minutes. if you were curious, but it, uh, seems like you’ve got this handled.”
They so had it handled.

Shipuary Day 7: Zoo
My brain doesn't want to write a whole ass thing because my brain no want think.
So have a funny zoo story about my dad.
So my father is quadriplegic. He can't move anything below his neck other than one of his hands and even then he can't grab things, so I have a few stories about him.
Kids at the Zoo will always look at my dad and be confused or ask him questions, my dad will always answer their questions because he likes informing kids about these kids of things because they might in the future work with someone like him, or in similar condition, go to school with someone like him, meet people like him so he thinks it's important to answer as many questions as he feels comfortable.
But the way he got that way..well it wasn't good so when a kid asks "Why are you like that?" Or something he just says "I was born this way." Or he says "Oh I just got hurt." He never really knows what to say. Like what is he supposed to say? His cousin wanted drug money and shot him a few times? He had kids and he thought he'd die before he got to meet his other son? He was horrified when that cousin came back into the room because he thought he was gonna try and finish him off?
So he goes with he more kid friendly answers.
Okay away from the dark things.
My dad is a huge goofball and he loves kids, so he'll sometimes chase kids around in his wheelchair at the zoo when we go because they find it fun and he enjoys it.
We have the Akron Zoo, if any of you have been we have like photo stops, a few kid places like play areas and this HUGE ASS GIFT SHOP. So this one time we went and my dad saw a plushie of a penguin in a wheelchair, he thought it was weird but he also thought it was kinda wholesome, we didn't get it because it was expensive AS FUCK so we normally just don't do things there.
When I was born and I coul actually come home after a few years at the hospital because I was a sickly kid he brought me to the zoo and I really loved the penguins and flamingos, I just liked it a lot. That's his favorite memory with me, he wasn't the way he is now, he could hold me up to see the penguins in their tank, he could walk me around and he could just..be a dad. I don't remember that day because I was so young but I really love it when my dad tells that story because he's so happy, he just really loves it because that's one of the few moments he had with me before he couldn't hold me, hug me, be a shoulder I could cry on. He's still those things, I can hug him, I can be a shoulder he can cry on.
I love my dad, I love him so much and Zoos are a thing we could always have together.
Okay aside from really touching things.
This lioness at the zoo really LOVED my dad, sh would like ponce up on the glass and everyone would like be shook because like that's a whole lion just doing that for my dad.
We have very wholesome memories attached to it and if anyone knows why she's do that tell me because if it's something stupid or funny I wanna tell my dad.

Goodnight, Aaron (Aaron Hotchner x Reader) Chapter 3
Summary: Day 2 of the trial, a Sunday where Jack is allowed to choose his own adventure with Sebastian along for the ride.
AN: I hope you are all taking care of yourselves <3 and that tomorrow is kind to you.
Tagging: @sunlight-moonrise, @clean-bands-dirty-stories, @genevievedarcygranger, and @davidrossi-ismydad
Chapter 2 // Masterlist // AO3 Link // Chapter 4
“Morning, Jack,” Sebastian greeted the soporific Jack Hotchner as he entered the kitchen. Jack mumbled back and climbed into his place at the table. Sebastian set the place, poured his cereal, got his juice out as well, before joining him in breakfast.
They ate in quietude, that is until Sebastian’s phone buzzed with a text.
Once he’d read it, he held the phone out to Jack across the table, “Hey, do you wanna talk to your Dad? He’s free to call you quick if you want.”
A bolt of energy shot through Jack and he clutched the phone tightly.
There was Sebastian’s watchful eye remaining on Jack while he was clearing up the dirty dishes. Jack knuckled one of his eyes every now and again, but there was no doubt that he was beyond excited to speak to Hotch. His legs swung under the table.
“I love you, Daddy,” Jack said before he passed the phone back over, but Hotch had already hung up. Pocketing it, Sebastian finished up his breakfast with Jack officially cheered up – for now at least.
“I was thinking we could go out somewhere, treat ourselves.”
“The zoo!” Jack crowed immediately
“The zoo?”
“I haven’t been for ages and ages!”
“Well, I shall see if that’s possible while you go brush your teeth.”
Completely unplanned, Jack was dressed in a green polo that matched Sebastian’s shirt. Not the pattern but they were the exact same shade.
“My mum used to dress me and my sister up in similar outfits when we were kids,” Sebastian said as he was tying up his laces.
“Sometimes, Henry and me wear the same things,” Jack replied, double knotting his shoes up. A wise move.
“Who’s Henry?”
“My friend, his Mommy works with Daddy.”
“Ah, gotcha.”
The drive over had a much more confident sing-a-long. Sebastian played the same CD (but just the songs that Jack liked) and Jack was starting to pick up on some of the lyrics. Or at least what they sounded like. He was currently favouring that of Sara Bareilles. So much so that, after they circled the car park of the zoo and found a space, they finished the song before turning the engine off
As they were lining up to buy the tickets, Sebastian bent over and whispered to Jack, “I know you’d much rather have your dad here instead of me.”
“I don’t mind you,” was the reply, and a shrug to boot.
“I don’t mind you either, kid.”
And the second they entered the park, map in hand, Jack was grabbing at Sebastian, pulling him along, “Come on, I wanna see the elephants!”
The pair did pause to glance in the direction of the other animals, give them their moment of glory. But their focus and their hearts were set on finding the biggest land mammal, past the bug house and the birds, along to where the wider paddocks were situated.
Across a wooden bridge, they finally landed at the edge of a wooden barrier, about five feet from a ha-ha wall that wrapped around the elephants’ land. Jack stood on his tiptoes, his chin on the wooden slat.
Already knowing the answer to his questions, Sebastian said, “Can you see alright? Or do you wanna go on my shoulders?”
Jack fidgeted, scuffing his shoes on the dirt path, “Yes please.”
And he raised his arms over his head. Sebastian ducked down and lifted Jack over his head with some difficulty. He didn’t tell Jack that though.
“Now, don’t go farting on me, young man,” He patted Jack’s leg.
“Thank you, Seb.”
From his elevated position, Jack cheered up. He made sure not to hit Sebastian when his legs stretched out in excitement at the baby elephant trotting about the enclosure. He waved to the baby elephant who waved their trunk clumsily back at the crowds, eliciting a series of “awws”.
“Baby elephants stay with their mothers for their whole life,” Sebastian read off the plaque, “And these ones are from India. That’s where my mum’s from!”
“Is that why you sound like that?”
“Like what?”
“All funny,” and Jack flapped his hand about.
“Nah, that’s my dad’s fault. From the exotic land of Bolton.”
“Is there any animals from there here?”
“Probably not, bud.”
“That one’s the Mommy,” Jack pointed out the elephant the wee baby was now showing off to. He laughed loudly when another baby elephant submerged its whole head into the artificial watering hole for a drink, “It’s still learning!”
A gentle meander took them all the way back to the café, once again ignoring the other animals. They were thinking with their stomach.
Upon arriving at their destination, Jack went for the classic fish, chips, and peas. Sebastian had made a New Year’s resolution to not order something just to get the chips on the side, so he went for the lasagne and broccoli.
“I used to call them ‘baby trees’, made me feel like a giant.”
“What about peas?” Jack scooped several of the vegetable up onto his fork.
“They’re boulders, the kind that roll all the way down mashed potato mountains.”
“I don’t have any mashed potatoes though.”
“Maybe next time. Eat your boulders.”
Third time lucky, the other animals were given Jack’s attention. His second favourite after the elephants? The meerkats. There was a bubble at the centre with a tunnel underneath the desert-like paddock that he could go into and poke his head up. He waved and shouted (albeit muffled by the thick glass) at Sebastian, who waved back and took some photos. Back around by Sebastian’s side of the wall, Jack would hold the meerkats’ attention with a clementine segment pinched in his finger and lure them around the wall’s edge. Then he would eat the fruit.
Sebastian preferred the otters, slipping and sliding down the stream. His laugh trilled with the kids that watched the otters cawing at each other. Chattering between their little whines, they wriggled around in the pool.
Just as Jack was adding to his birthday list every other item in the gift shop. Sebastian’s phone buzzed in his pocket.
About to fly back to Virginia, will be in around nine.
All good our end, hope it’s good with yours too
And Sebastian sent his reply with the photo of Jack hypnotising the meerkats with the promise of citrus fruit.
Jack was very clearly worn out from the day but still had enough energy to tap his toes along during the drive back. The news that Hotch would be home that evening was what got Jack through until dinner time. Sat on the countertop, he watched TV placidly, while Sebastian got on with the tuna pasta. He did get to pour the sweetcorn in, a proper little chef.
“Thoughts?” Sebastian asked when Jack chewed through half his plate, apparently without breathing.
“It’s nice,” Jack said, his mouth half full, “I like the chips.”
The crushed salted crisps sprinkled on top were just a bonus that Sebastian’s dad had introduced to the world. His best invention by far, besides his two kids of course. And Jack ate it all up with gusto.
As the dishwasher was being loaded, out of nowhere, the front door unlocked and not even halfway open before Jack was up on his feet and shouting, “Daddy!”
He sprinted full force and was caught in his father’s arms just as Hotch stepped into the flat. Hotch, despite seeming very worn out, cradled his son like he was a newborn.
“Hey buddy,” He whispered into Jack’s hair, “How have you been?”
Jack’s reply was muffled in his suit jacket, “Good!”
“How was your time with Sebastian?”
“We went to the zoo!”
Sebastian caught Hotch’s gaze over Jack’s shoulder, and immediately Sebastian busied himself with clearing the table, “Lucky you caught him on his way to bed.”
“Come on,” Hotch patted Jack’s back, “Let’s get you off to sleep.”
He carried Jack off to his bedroom, leaving his briefcase at the door. Sebastian watched them go with a half-smile. One that disappeared when it turned to the chores at hand.
First things first, he placed Hotch’s dinner onto a plate and placed it in the oven, still warm from the initial cooking. Of course, he didn’t put the salad in the oven. He wasn’t an idiot. Then it was putting the leftovers in the fridge, scrubbing at the dishes and cutlery, cleaning down the table, sweeping up the stuff. Somehow he was always more productive when the repercussions were next to instantaneous.
“Did Jack go down OK?” Sebastian asked once Hotch had returned to the kitchen.
“Yes, he’s quite worn out from your trip.”
“How was the case?”
The question was offered with a levity that Hotch understood as merely checking in, not an attempt to mine the grisly details from his mind. That much was clear when Hotch set his gun down on the table and Sebastian tensed before moving around and away from it. Hotch then picked it back up and deposited it in a drawer.
“It was fine, glad it was over quick. Is that my dinner?” Hotch opened the oven, standing clear of the hot air that escaped from it.
Nodding, Sebastian passed the dying up cloth between his two hands, “Yeah, plus salad, crisps – sorry, ‘chips’ - for the top.” He corrected himself only because Hotch’s eyebrows knitted at his choice of words.
“You put chips on top of your pasta?” He said slowly.
“Don’t knock it ‘til you try it.”
Looking unconvinced, Hotch closed the oven again, “How did you find your time with Jack?”
“He’s a good kid, we had fun today. Plus, he didn’t kick up a fuss eating his five-a-day which is a bonus,” Sebastian twisted the dish cloth around, “You’ve done a good job raising him.”
Hotch nodded with what Sebastian was saying, and while his face stayed neutral, his eyes held a glint.
“Then you wouldn’t have any objections to becoming his nanny full time, would you?”
Offer sank in and Sebastian’s face broke out into a toothy grin, “Yeah? Even with the crisp-chips?”
Hotch’s shoulders dropped about half an inch of tension, “Do you have your documents with you? We can get the paperwork done tonight.”
A little undainty on his feet, Sebastian went to his room and grabbed his folder of his important paperwork that was still in his unpacked suitcase. He tried to keep his clothes neat now that they were out on the carpet.
“Can I get you a drink?” Hotch asked, already pouring himself a scotch. He had served his dinner while Sebastian was out of the room. He’d even sprinkled a few chips on top like Sebastian had suggested.
“I’m good with water, thanks,” and Sebastian sat opposite Hotch’s place at the table.
“You don’t mind if I eat while we do this? I haven’t since lunch time.”
“Go ahead.”
Sebastian waited until he was a few forkfuls into his meal before speaking again, “Thoughts on the chips?”
He had to severely mute his reaction as he watched the corner of Hotch’s mouth quirk up and stay there, “Surprisingly good.”
With glee, Sebastian snapped his fingers, “Success!”
Once settled, Hotch and Sebastian discussed fees, records, emergency contacts. A copy of the background check Hotch had already completed sat atop the contract. Hotch let Sebastian read through to his leisure while he polished off his dinner. By the time his plate was cleared, Sebastian’s signature had been scribbled alongside Hotch’s on the few dotted lines that concluded the sheets of paper.
“You’re officially hired,” Hotch slid a pair of newly cut keys across the table. When Sebastian pocketed them, he held up his tumbler.
“To having a job,” Sebastian clinked his glass against Hotch’s and took a sip, “Thank you. Forgot to send you this yesterday by the way.”
And he sent the photos off to Hotch’s number. Not a moment later, Hotch’s phone beeped and he picked it up, his thumb swiping over the photos. To fill the quiet, Sebastian asked, “Do you have a preference on what I can send you and when while you’re away? I don’t wanna bother you too much while you’re working.” His rambling faded as he watched Hotch’s face soften.
“Send me photos whenever you can.” Hotch’s voice had melted too, warming Sebastian’s already soporific heart.
Sebastian stifled a yawn before swallowing, “And I think that’s the end of my day approaching. Goodnight, Aaron.”
“One more thing,” Hotch slipped his phone into his breast pocket, “Why did you move over here, Sebastian?”
“I had a pen pal over here, we met on holiday when we were kids, and I wanted to move away from home. So I got a Visa and moved in with her.”
“Just like that?”
“Just like that.”
Satisfied, Hotch began to clear up his plate, “Goodnight, Sebastian.”
Sebastian went to say goodnight but, remembering he’d already said that, he just left for his bedroom.

K A I D E N
I had just found a parking space when my brother shot me a text. Looking over I replied in my head and proceeded to park before getting out and making my way inside the airport. I was more than geeked about having my baby brother here with me. He was just like me, hotheaded, horrible attitude and a nasty mouth with no filter.
I looked around for a good minute but then I saw that damn beard. My phone went off again and I could see him getting frustrated. “Yo Karter!” His head snapped back so fast I thought the shit was gon’ break off. “MY NIGGA!” We exclaimed together as we dapped and pulled each other in for a hug.
I stepped back and crossed my arms observing him. “Bruh you done grew the fuck up on me.” He stroked his beard cheesing. “Shit it has been a while since we’ve seen each other,” I felt bad about that shit. “but fuck it. Im just stoked to be here man. I missed you.” He dapped me again laughing. I grabbed one of his suitcases and led the way out.
Packing his shit in the trunk, we got in and you know I had to roll a fat wood. “Still in that shit huh?” I sighed and shook my head. “Not for long.” That was one thing he hated the most. Best believe he’s a pothead but dealing? You can kiss that goodbye. Soon as I mentioned something about it he turned and walked away from me.
He would try and be funny sometimes paying me when he wanted weed but of course I slipped the shit back to him. Thats my bro so he always get free shit. “Londyn finally gave me chance.” I spoke out hoping to shift the topic and mood. “No shit! You bagged the baddest in the city. I follow her on instagram nshit and boooooy! She still fine.”
My face flattened as I sealed the wood and mugged his ass. “Shut the fuck up nigga.” He held his hands up in surrender and leaned his seat back. I backed out of the parking space and lit the wood. “But it happened on some wild shit. Some drunk shit actually,” he chuckled, “took her on a nice little date nshit.” I puffed on the blunt before passing.
“Its shocking but not really ‘cause it was bound to happen. Everybody knew yall was gon’ end up together sooner than later.” He shrugged taking a hit. He did have a point though. When I say everybody and their mama knew, I meant that. “Oh shit before I forget, we going out tonight for her sisters shop opening. So I hope you’on got plans.” Karter scrunched his face. “Nigga what plans would I have?” I busted out laughing and snatched my blunt from him.

I groaned and pushed my head into the pillow as loud music blared through the house. “Get the fuck up! Get ready!” I popped up and seen Loryn standing in the doorway with her hands on her hips. “You over slept Lani.” She walked over to my closet and placed my makeup box on the vanity. “Oh shit. I wanted to flat iron my hair.”
I sat at the edge of the bed. I still had to find something to wear. “You look beautiful with curly hair. Chop chop! Lets move.” She walked out closing the door behind her. I really didnt mean to over sleep but shit I was tired. After my bubble bath I smoked a blunt and watched movies on Netflix until I fell asleep.
I was still distraught about earlier today. I felt so stupid for wanting to text Omari. I wanted answers but then again I didnt. Shaking it off, I went to the closet and picked through my clothes. I could either go classy or simple but still fashionable. I decided on simple.
Once I got dressed I brushed my teeth then started on this lion mane of mine. All I had to was wet it a little and apply moisturizer. I needed my curls to pop tonight. Checking myself out in the mirror I blew a kiss then turned out the light before returning to the closet. “Have you heard from mama?” Loryn busted in my room once again. “No. Call her.” I said in duh tone. “You call her.”
She rolled her eyes and sat on my bed. “You look cute by the way.” I waved her off and continued to dial my mom. When she answered she said, “yes Lani? Make it quick.” I placed her on speaker phone and handed the phone to Loryn. “Ma? You cant miss this night. I need you there!” She expressed. “MA! You hear you?”
“I hear you baby. Oh shit, Im on the way home now.” You could her rushing off to somewhere and slamming a door closed. “Im grabbing my things now and leaving. I wont miss it. I promise.” She said her goodbyes and explained to someone what was going on. Lordyn didnt hang up until she heard the car start up. “Shes gonna miss it.” She whispered looking like she wanted to cry.
“Stay positive. Let go get a drink.” I grabbed her hand and dragged her to the kitchen yelling out for my other two sister. “C’mon girls!” Londyn and Leilani walked into the kitchen looking fly as fuck. I swear my mama made some fine ass twins. I took the bottle of Hennessy out the freezer and grabbed some shit glasses.
I poured shots for us and motioned for them to pick one. “I just wanna toast to my bad ass sissy Loryn. I couldn’t be more proud of you!” We clinked our glasses together chanting, “congrats suh!” before throwing the shot back. I heard the door open and my mom walked in. “Oh fuck im late.” My sisters and I fell out laughing. She threw her purse and bag on the couch shrugging her jacket off. “Ima throw something on then join in.”
I got another glass and poured us another shot. We waited for my mom to come out, and five minutes later she came out looking flawless as always. “Ok Ok,” my mom grabbed her glass and looked over at Loryn. “to my precious Ruby, Im more than proud to be your mother. Im more than proud about you opening up your own business. I pray for positive vibes and many more blessings to come your way.”
She raised her glass and we followed. “Mommy loves you baby.” We clung glasses again and down the liquor. “Kaiden is here. Lets roll.” Londyn announced and I instantly got nervous. We grabbed everything we needed before leaving out and locking the house. “Hey mama Loraine.” Kaiden, who had flowers in his hands, walked up to her giving her hug and kissing her cheek. “And congrats to the Ms. Loryn.” He handed her the flowers and kissed her forehead.
“Wassup Lei, Lil Lo?” Kaiden proceeded to kiss our foreheads leaving Londyn for last. He wrapped her in a bear hug placing a fat kiss on her lips. “This my lil brotha Karter, Kater this is Mama Loraine and the the twins.” He did a quick introduction. I was definitely checking out Karter. His beard. Those lips. Thats damn smile! Calm down Lani.. I coached myself.
“Yall look beautiful,” he complimented once he took his attention off of Londyn. “whats the riding plans?” He continued. “I’ll drive. And mama and the twins can ride with me.” Loryn spoke up. Kaiden looked back at me. “Wanna ride wit us Lil Lo?” I looked around before nodding my head. Londyn squinted her eyes and walked to the car.
“Follow me Kaiden.” “Already.” We parted ways and hopped in the car. “What you call yourself doing Kai?” He cocked his head to the side and cranked the car. “Fuck you talkin bout princess?” We had to wait for Loryn to back out of the driveway before we could move. As always, Kaiden pulled out a wood that was already rolled. “Ima wait til mama and them pass to light it.” He looked at me and Karter in the backseat.
“You know exactly what Im talking about. Dont play stupid.” She looked back at us and squinted her eyes again. “Girl mind ya business.” Kaiden turned her around and took off behind Loryn.
Not even thirty minutes later, we pulled to Loryns shop, Naturals. She had her own lot and plenty of space for clients. There was close to a hundred people waiting outside. I was shocked. Kaiden cut the engine and we got out at the same time. As we got closer to the door Loryn got teary eyed. “Wow! First and foremost, thank you all for coming out and celebrating with me. Im beyond grateful.” Everyone cheered clapping their hands.
“I would like to thank my family for motivating me and keeping me focused. Next, much much love to my wonderful working staff. Im more than excited for yall to see everything so, lets get it!” She slapped her hands together smiling hard and taking a pair of scissors. I watched on, with my cheeks damn near hurting and tears in my eyes, as Loryn cut the rope. “YES LORYN!” I yelled out clapping and whooping! Soon after everyone else joined in.

“Welcome to Naturals.” I hugged and welcomed everyone in. I was amazed by the crowd and was filled with joy. I couldn’t do anything but thank the Lord. My shop came out looking beautiful. Each hair dresser had their own personal space. I sat the flowers Kaiden got me on the receptionist desk and walked around.
Seeing everyone smiling and enjoying their selves made my heart smile. “Congratulations beautiful.” Turning around I came face to face with Ace. “What are you doing here?” I haven’t heard from him in a while and now he decided to pop up. “I couldnt miss my girls day.” I leaned my head to the side and started to walk away. But then I thought, what good would that do? Knowing I was gonna end up in his bed later on.
“Now Im your girl? I havent seen or heard from you in weeks. Whats that about?” I placed one hand on my hip and looked up at him. Ace sighed and stepped closer to me. “I had a drop to make out of town. Came back this morning and been resting up since then.” His hands were in his pockets. “And you couldnt let me know that?”
“So you could come up with every reason in the book to keep me from going?” He fired back. I had to give him that so I stayed quiet. “I gotta lil gift for you. You’ll get it later on tonight. “ He leaned down, kissed my lips and made his way over to my mom to greet her. I swear I couldn’t stand him at times but he made me happy. Looking around again, I stopped when I seen Lolani and Kaidens brother chalking it up the bar.
He had to be saying some funny shit ‘cause she was smiling and laughing hard. Fuck they got going on? Deciding to leave it alone and ask later, I spotted Leilani and Londyn with Kaiden right behind her. “Hey yall.” I laughed a little approaching them. “Im loving the shop, its so spacious and classy.” I loved my twin.
“I love the colors. I even took this bomb ass picture in the bathroom.” Leilani showed me the picture and I instantly gassed her. “You so fuckin fine.” One of the caterers walked around us a glass of champagne. “Congrats again sus!” I could get use to hearing that.
—-
It was close to midnight when my guest left. I cleaned up with the help of my family, which only took half an hour. “Thank yall again, I cant express how much I love yall.” I handed my mom the keys and told her that I was riding home with Ace. She kissed my cheek and led them out the shop. “Im proud of you.” My dimples sunk in as my I looked down smiling. “Ready for ya gift?”
“More than ready.” I grabbed my belongings, grabbed his hand and waked out locking up behind us. He opened the car door for me and then made his way to driver seat. One settled into the car he reached in the back and pulled out a duffel bag along with small gift bags. He sat the duffel in my lap and opened it. When I say my mouth dropped.
It was neatly stacked bills filled to the top. “Thats for emergencies. Put in somewhere safe.” Next he handed me the small bags and I went searching. The bag held an iced Pandora bracelet. “Damn,” was the only thing I could say. In the next bag was a gold Cuban link chain. “Ice me out then!” We laughed and he took the jewelry to place them on me.
“Dont get fucked up out here Loryn, remember who ya man is.” I smacked my teeth and pushed his hand. “I dont need no reminder nigga.” He pulled me in for a kiss and pushed my seat back. “Now sit back and shut up while I enjoy myself.” Ace took my thighs and made me spread eagle. “Why you free ballin’?”
I looked down as he placed small wet kisses on my second lips. “Stop teasing me and get to it.” He slid two fingers inside of my mouth and flicked my clit. “I didnt tell you to talk so shut up?” He drug his tongue from the top the of my clit down to my opening. I grabbed onto his head shoving pushing him further into my pussy. “Fuck yeah baby!” I gyrated my hips and leaned my head back enjoying the moment. This was definitely the best way to end the night.

12 Finer Points Of Damage Control
Ao3 link
07/20/13-07/25/13 Saturday - Thursday
Stan didn’t say anything when he got home, because the slumber party crew had arrived and there were people underfoot everywhere. Clary coordinated dishwashing duties in the kitchen, passing silverware off to Candy and lifting plates out of Grenda’s towel as soon as they were dry. “Did you get dinner?” she asked as he stuck his head warily through the door. “We have leftovers.”
“Uh - I’ll wait until you guys’re done, thanks.” Mabel teetered atop a stepstool to put away glasses. She managed a shameless wink over Clary’s head. Pacifica sat at the kitchen table looking bored and vaguely hostile, fingertips busy flicking across her phone’s screen. “If you got a minute later, Clary, could we have a word?”
“You bet, Stan, I’ll come looking for you.”
There was really no time at all to talk. Clary chased after the four girls like a harried mother goose, hopping over Waddles when necessary. Stan could not believe the amount of chatter they generated - commentary on the guest list, the likely menu, Ford’s relative hotness - he winced at that one.
They spent a good hour in the living room huddled around Mabel’s phone, watching videos and arguing over the party soundtrack. Clary was pushing for classic tunes, forties and fifties stuff. “Lowest common denominator. Everyone can dance to that.”
“My grunkle’s got pretty light feet,” Mabel shot back. “Seventies or bust! Let’s give the old man a chance to strut his stuff!”
“Every time Stan struts his stuff, something gets broken.” Pacifica was leaning in, still looking a little bored but at least engaged. “Which might be fun to watch.”
Stan hovered within earshot for a little while, hoping Clary would pull herself free, but he gave up after one too many intense debates over boy bands. He’d have to wait them out. The cash was burning a hole in his pocket anyway. He stomped off to the old office, flicked on a lamp, cleared a space on the desk and buckled down to work.
He couldn’t really enjoy the whole process with the sense of impending doom winding tight in his chest. The old answering machine’s red light blinked angrily from across the room; he threw stuff at it - Gold Chains For Old Men from last April, a Lil’ Gideon promo t-shirt, a ratty coonskin cap he’d never repurposed - until something stuck and covered it up.
By the time he had the guest list and the cash bundled up and packed away in the safe it was well past midnight. Stan crept through the darkened house, reflexively avoiding all the creakiest spots in the floor. Dipper, he knew, was crashing on the study couch downstairs.
Indistinct girlish voices and the steady thump thump thump of muffled bass were still trickling under the kids’ door. The narrow line of light painted onto the floorboards was dim, at least, so things must be winding down by now. Stan paused and raised his hand to knock, then thought better of it and slunk off towards his own room.
He was on the verge of tucking himself in when he heard the soft creak of hinges down the hall. Cracking his door open a sliver revealed a bare glimpse of Clary tiptoeing out and downstairs in pajamas and kerchief. Eventually she returned with the plastic pitcher and a few old tumblers.
Stan just watched. She glanced over as she made to slip back in, spotting his silhouette against the faint light of his room, and with a tiny conspiratorial smile held a finger to her lips.
He closed the door, flopped flat on his back in bed, and stared at the ceiling that was too far away to actually see until he tumbled unwilling into restless sleep.
Come morning the yammering traffic of teenage girls throwing together a full-on Mabel-style breakfast was too much to bear. There wasn’t a chance in hell of extricating Clary from the chaos, so he headed straight for the museum.
Soos had rigged construction curtains across the space they’d blocked out. The ‘Coming Attraction!’ sign sported a cheerful, toothy, horned-and-winged weasel with wide cartoon eyes, probably Melody’s work.
Stan had argued for scaling the whole production down a little, but Soos had been adamant in his laid-back way. By hook or by crook it was going to be a walkthrough with hidden lighting, surround sound and special effects, whatever that meant.
He spent most of his time slathering black paint over the framework that had already gone in. The blackout shell that would eventually enclose it all would at least cover up any number of construction sins. Positioning marks for lights, showpieces and electronics got chalked in according to the elaborate plans he’d been handed.
Morning tours swung past his sheltered corner and Stan listened in pleased bemusement. There was already a snappy line of patter for the new exhibit. Soos had a gift for this - the style had changed but the appreciative giggling and gasps from his audience were familiar.
After all, Stan had fallen into the role. Soos had aspired to it.
It was easy to lose himself in the work for a couple of hours, but eventually his stomach’s vague grumble and the angle of sunlight through the windows warned him that he had other things to worry about. Soos stuck his head in between curtains and tapped at the framework. “Time for lunch, Mr. Pines! The girls have all gone home and I think Miss Clary’s got sandwiches made up.”
“Yeah, yeah, comin’.” Stan rubbed at a few flecks of black paint on his fingers and emerged squinting into the main room. “Sounds like a nice busy mornin’. Everythin’ all right with plans for the dance thing?”
Soos tugged a notepad out of his jacket. “Oh, yeah, we’re selling a ton of tickets! I guess they all saw your posters. Lots of messages came in last night. Took a while to get through them all before we opened up. And we had a bunch of people asking about dinner tickets?” He flipped a couple of pages while Stan cringed internally. “Yup, about fifteen of those. Couple more calls today, too, and a few people asking at the gift shop.”
“Uh. Yeah. About those. Didja get phone numbers an’ names?”
“Oh, sure. Looked like you settled on eighty-five bucks apiece for those, so that’s what we charged.”
“What you - Soos, did you actually sell them tickets?!”
Soos blinked. “Well, sure! I saw the envelope in the safe and that ticket book, so I figured you and Miss Clary worked something out. It’ll be one big party!”
“Sweet Moses.” Stan squeezed his eyes shut, slapped a hand to his brow, and started to pace. Surely there was still a way to contain the damage. “Okay. Okay, you got contact info, all we gotta do is call people - “
He swung around to look out across the exhibit space, spinning possibilities in his mind - reschedule, shift the venue, anything but issuing refunds. His focus flicked blankly from point to point, then settled on the woman standing with arms folded right behind the Sascrotch.
Ah, fuck.
“Stan,” Clary said gently. “May I have a moment of your time, please.” It wasn’t a question.
Stan held out a hand. Soos laid the notebook in his palm and backed away until he was out of her line of sight.
Clary turned and walked with measured strides through the museum and then the house until she’d arrived at the porch. Stan followed with feet dragging as though they were already encased in concrete.
She set hands to her hips and looked out into the distance - he wasn’t sure if she even saw the trees. As the silence drew out he thumbed through Soos’ notebook and mentally counted up tickets, arriving at a number large enough to make his stomach flip in delight and dread.
“The girls and I came up with a guest list of eighteen people,” Clary said at length. “Am I to understand that we are expecting more, now.”
Stan cleared his throat and launched in. “So, funny thing, I stopped off for a coffee down at Greasy’s an’ Susan’s the one who brought it up, since you’ve been lookin’ to get this whole thing organized for the last couple days, said you asked about cherry pie, good choice by the way - “
Not a word. Her fingers were drumming out a restless rhythm against the khaki of her shorts.
“So yeah. Yeah, people were startin’ to get the wrong idea ‘bout dance party tickets so I thought maybe we’d, y’know, sell some dinner tickets since they’re so hot on it, we’ll make enough - more than enough! - t’offset all the expenses an’ then at least we know who’s comin’, we don’t get a buncha people bustin’ in uninvited - “
“How many?”
He had a good head of steam up and had to fumble around for a second. “Uh - what?”
“How many tickets?” She hadn’t raised her voice but there was an edge in it like the wind of a January blizzard and he nearly shivered.
“Looks like about fifty - “
“Fifty!” Clary barked it out and turned to glare at him full on. Her face was pale, a hard spot of angry pink high in each cheek. “Stan, that’s seventy people. I can’t cook for seventy people out of the house, there is no damn way and the minute money’s involved you need a certified commercial kitchen! How in the hell - “
Stan knew he’d gone red in the face and hell if a direct challenge wasn’t making his temper start to flare a little, too. “Well - well, fine, we have Greasy’s make it all! We shuttle it up an’ make sure we have plenty of paper plates, no problem!”
Clary scoffed. “There is no way you didn’t sell this as a home-cooked meal from your very own resident lawyer.”
Okay, so she wasn’t entirely wrong. “No one’s gonna care about the food. They just wanna meet you - “
“So you’re telling me I make a decent roadside attraction?”
The last syllable rose and broke. She clapped a palm over her mouth. Stan looked at her, his jaw gone slack, a sharp little sting lodged in his chest. Tears of fury or frustration had welled up at the corners of her eyes and one made a break for it as she pulled a shaking breath.
“I need a minute,” she said, rough-edged.
“Clary. C’mon.” He reached out, hoping to lay a hand on her shoulder. She twitched away, then slipped past him with fluid ease, making no contact. In three long strides she’d thrown a leg over her bicycle. One foot found a pedal and she took off at speed down the path that’d eventually get her to town. “Oh, come on!”
Both of the kids clattered out onto the porch, standing to either side of him.
“Grunkle Stan?” Mabel looked up to him in wide-eyed concern. “What’s going on? Is she okay?”
“She forgot her helmet.” Dipper folded his hands, thumbs twirling awkward loops. “Uh, so the dinner thing got - bigger?”
Stan set a hand to his chin for a long moment, breathing through his fingers to steady himself.
“Yep,” he said. “She’s headin’ out to work on logistics an’ supplies an’ so on. We’ve only got a couple days to pull it all together, yeah?” Stan scraped up a smile and lightly patted Mabel’s hair. “You know how this town is, things get outta hand pretty quick. We’re all gonna have to pitch in, got it?”
Mabel looked on the verge of tears for a moment, then her back straightened and her jaw set in determination. “I don’t know what the heck just happened but we are gonna fix it. Right, Dipper?”
“Right, Mabel! Come on, we’ll go track her down!”
“Kids. No.” He shook his head when they looked up at him in surprise. “She wants peace an’ quiet, she gets peace an’ quiet.” Mabel looked briefly mulish, Dipper troubled, but he put on the stern look and eventually they nodded.
She didn’t reappear that afternoon. Stan did his best to stay busy with piecing the exhibit together, focused more sharply than usual in service of not thinking about anything else. He was genuinely starting to worry along towards dinnertime when his phone chimed with an incoming one-line message, then more in rapidfire sequence.
Rented out Greasy’s kitchen. Add’l food lined up. Updated menu. Pls send guest list when complete. Still need: tables & chairs, linens, serveware. Suggest asking McGucket. Manor might have garden party supplies.
Hesitant, Stan tapped in: You okay?
The reply was near instant. I’m fine. Will see you at dinner.
He’d about finished off the wiring, packing away tools and electrical tape, when Mabel came dashing in out of breath and yanked aside the construction curtain. “She’s back! C’mon, c’mon, you’ve gotta clean up!”
Ford had been on dinner duty that evening, which meant it was heavy on vegetables and light on anything interesting. Dipper and Mabel were buzzing around Clary. She looked freshly scrubbed, maybe a little drawn, tossing together a salad at the counter. Her head came up as Stan entered; she set down the dressing, marched right over and offered her right hand. “I apologize.”
Stan accepted her clasp immediately and squeezed in what he hoped was reassurance. “Hey. Ah, glad you’re all right, real sorry about the inconvenience an’ all.” Grateful though he was to see her, the smile she wore was surface-slight, her eyes cool.
“I’ve run fundraisers before. It’ll all be under control in a day or two.” Clary’s fingers slipped from his and she pivoted to collect the salad bowl. “All right, you lot! War council time! As you know we’re running the biggest party of the summer here at the Shack and I am going to need help from all of you.”
Ford dished up brown rice and poached salmon. Clary laid out the menu, jotted in several additions and got quite serious with Mabel about desserts, settling on ‘Fireworks Krispy Treats: They’ll Light Up Your Mouth!’ in addition to the cherry pies and lemon bars she’d apparently negotiated with Susan.
“You,” Clary said, pointing her pen at Stan. “Logistics. The exhibit and the seating are yours to manage. Remember that at this rate we may have to set up an outdoor dance floor. You,” indicating Ford, “please keep working on my car. I’m going to need both of you early on the morning of this thing to knock out the chicken.”
Stan watched the whole process with trepidation - she was a monster of efficiency and it was a far cry from the laid-back approach she’d been taking for the last couple days. “Yes ma’am.”
“We’ve got less than a week to knock this out of the park.” Clary took up her fork and saluted the table at large. “Let’s make this legendary.” She tucked briskly into her dinner and finished well before everyone else, dropping off her plate at the sink and ducking out of the kitchen before Stan could catch her.
It went like that for the entire following day. Clary disappeared before anyone was awake, communicating only in an endless series of texts. Most of those hit a broadcast group including Stan, Soos, Ford and the kids, friendly if brisk updates on the state of the picnic.
A few of them came only to Stan, and those were ...terse.
Status on tables etc?
Updates to guest count?
Pls keep any receipts for supplies. Will collect them later.
An argument about who was going to pay for what would be coming down the pike soon, he was sure of that.
Got time in the morning? he tapped in.
Working to clean Greasy’s kitchen up to code. Will probably finish tomorrow. A pause, then: Wouldn’t want to poison half the town.
Clary didn’t even make it back for dinner that night. When he went looking for her the next morning she was already gone, and her phone went unanswered. Stan lasted until just before lunchtime before pure frustration drove him to start working his way through local contacts to track her down.
“Greasy's diner - we have food!” That was Susan for sure, sounding slightly manic.
“Heeey, Susan. listen, is Miz Merrick down there? She headed out early this mornin' and I was wonderin' where she landed.”
“Oh, gosh yes!” Susan giggled against the background racket of customers. “You should've seen her. She's been hauling stuff out of that old walk-in fridge that I didn't even know existed! We've got some pretty weird specials for lunch, let me tell ya. She’s helping with the rush while she's stocking up all this stuff for the big picnic - ooooh, it's all going to be delicious! I can't wait!”
Stan squinted. “Wait, what, you're comin'?”
“Oh, sure! She traded me a ticket and got me the ingredients for all those pies!” Her cheerful tone dropped a little into rusty affection. “I can't wait to take a spin around the dance floor with you.” He thought that over, then shuddered faintly to himself.
“So, ah, she free to come to the phone? Guess she's set hers on silent or somethin'.”
“Gimme a minute, sweetie, i'll go check.” The rattle of industrial-grade china and indistinct conversation went on as she left the receiver on the counter, calling out towards the back of the place.
Eventually she wandered back. “Sorry, Stan, she's in the middle of juggling like eight trays of biscuits. Says she'll see you back at the Shack tonight.”
Stan propped himself against the wall and managed not to sigh. “All right, Susan, thanks. Glad she's gettin' out ahead of it all.”
“You bet, sugar. See ya in a couple days!”
He'd been too engrossed to notice company in the hallway, and when he glanced up glumly it was right at Mabel perched on the bottom step with Waddles leaning into her side. Stan jerked upright but she was already shaking a finger at him.
"Don't you give me that look, Grunkle Stan. She's too ‘busy’ - “ Biiiiiig air quotes around that one. “- to talk to you, right?"
“Ah - um - “ He juggled a couple of possible deflections, then shoved the phone in his pocket and looked at her in naked desperation. “I swear this is not what I meant to happen!”
Mabel heaved a theatrical sigh. “All right. This is something I can fix. Clary and I have an appointment with Soos' Abuelita tomorrow morning.” She waggled her eyebrows. “A secret appointment. When we get back at around lunchtime you better be ready to shake your moneymaker, got it?"
“Shake my what now?”
“You two are gonna host this thing, so you better dance. And since the spotlight's gonna be on you, you'd better be good! Everyone will be watching!”
Oh boy. He was probably a dead man walking as it was and this wasn’t gonna help.
“And that means,” Mabel said, cheerfully oblivious, “That you two need to practice. Don't worry. Mabel's on the case and I'll make it happen.” She zapped him with the finger-guns and shoved Waddles aside enough to get to her feet. “I'll let you know where you need to be and when. Make sure you’re tidy, okay?”
‘Where’ turned out to be the old storage room he’d converted to a ramshackle boxing ring, the ropes downed and folded up in a corner. ‘When’ was late morning the following day, and ‘what’ - well. That was answered when Mabel came in, dragging the karaoke machine in her wake. Clary stepped in right after, a bandana at her neck and another binding back her hair, bleach spatters dotting her old t-shirt.
Stan stuffed hands in his pockets and rolled his shoulders back, doing his level best to meet her eyes without a twinge of guilt - because, come on, they were going to make a ton of money on this picnic thing - and found himself mostly failing. He was really starting to hate the polished, faint, impenetrable smile she had for him.
Mabel’s voice was a vague buzz through the tangle of his self-justification but he caught the gist of it - dazzle the rubes, make it look easy, inspire swooning jealousy in the audience. “All right,” she wrapped up, as rah-rah as he’d ever heard her. “Let’s you and him dance!”
Clary pinched her lips, unfolded her arms, and stalked out across the floor to join him.
“So,” Stan said.
“Mmhm.”
“Carved some time out of the schedule?”
“Barely. Your young lady over there makes a good argument.”
This was worse than her trying to punch him. Clary settled into the arch of his arm with professional precision, a frosty six inches of space between them, the six inches his mother had lectured him about a billion years ago and that he’d promptly ignored at the first opportunity to get up close and personal.
Stan maintained that six inches like his life depended on it because maybe it did.
“My waltz is all right. My samba’s shaky. Meet in the middle with foxtrot?” Clary looked up to him with clear, fearless eyes, the faintest of curves drawn along her lips. Her fingers were chapped and rough in his.
“Might as well start off easy. Mabel, whatcha got, pumpkin?”
“Got it!” There must have been some consultation beforehand because what came out of Mabel’s hot-pink speakers was honest-to-god big band music. Stan nearly protested and stifled it when Clary looked at him askance.
“Come on now,” she said sweetly. “We should really start with the lowest common denominator, shouldn’t we? If you would.”
He inhaled, flexed his hand at her waist and rocked back for the first step.
Their first pass around the room was dismal. She obviously had some formal training and he could barely remember what the hell went into a foxtrot, it’d been so long since he had done anything more than improvise on a foxtrot theme. There were a few near misses with her feet before she clicked her tongue and murmured. “Slow, slow, quick quick. I can tell you know this.”
One brassy number blended into the next as they paced and whirled, Mabel razzing them or calling encouragement by turns. “Clary, stop looking at him like you want to stab him! Dance is the language of love! You gotta sell it better than that!”
“Maybe I want to stab him.” Clary glared somewhere off over his left shoulder.
“No you don’t. You want to knock the socks off everyone at this party, right? I know you two can do it.”
Stan gritted his teeth and fought to earn back her trust with the respectful press of his palm, honoring whatever distance between them she wanted. By the third pass the six-inch block of ice had softened a little. “Spin?” he suggested, and at her faint nod he tried some fancier footwork.
They were uncoordinated, discordant, his feet clipping the edges of her sandals, frustration building between them as they lurched and wobbled. Mabel’s face was a worried glint in a corner of his eye. When Clary went off balance she caught herself with the awkward combination of a foot jabbed down out of sequence and his hand tightening at her waist in support.
He couldn’t quite look at her, but he hissed out, low as he could, “This is not gonna work if you can’t trust me a little.”
“Should I trust you?” she breathed back at him in a near-subsonic murmur. Her fingernails pricked at his shoulder.
Stan snorted softly. “Hell, no, you shouldn’t.”
There was a little pfft, pure disbelief, and a direct sidelong look of complete exasperation. The music spun to a stop as they stood interlocked and distant, then finally, mercifully, launched into the next tune. Something in her ramrod spine trembled, then snapped; he felt her make herself relax and sway into his grip.
“Fine,” Clary said dryly. “Honesty I can work with.”
This one was easy, a big swinging number with a nice solid four-square beat, nothing but a framework to whirl around the room to. Stan took it slow at first. She’d stopped fighting him so much, still hesitant but at least responsive to the little nudges that offered guidance, and as they moved he felt the tension in the room dissipating. The next time he signaled a spin she took the cue, pivoting neatly through and landing back in the crook of his arm with a quirked brow.
After a couple minutes he chuckled in surprise. “You’re not terrible at this.”
Her heel came down square on his toe, deliberate, he thought. “I suppose you’re not terrible either.”
Mabel relaxed too, flashing him a hasty thumbs up when Clary was looking elsewhere. The next track she cued up was overtly sappy, loaded with layered strings and lyrics dripping with longing. “Mabel,” snapped Clary. “Next please.”
“Sorry, wrong song!” Mabel wasn’t the least bit repentant but she did skip this one.
Time pressure was sort of a foreign thing for Stan - he had no problem putting his head down and plugging away, but was used to more open-ended projects. Possessed by grim determination, assisted by Soos through a couple of late nights, he got the Dreaming Denizens exhibit up and running in the nick of time.
They’d moved the cannibal pixie village over to hang in the rafters above the disguised darkroom. Melody had rigged a couple ragged little bits of LED-centered tulle mounted on wires to flutter around in the shadows. The effect was surprisingly creepy and convincing once they’d tweaked the lighting in that corner.
The ticketed picnic crowd had swelled to nearly seventy before Stan managed to shut it all down. Fortunately the Northwests had abandoned enough folding tables, chairs and lawn tents to handle twice that, easy, in the cavernous manor basement. At Clary’s direction they’d also hauled out enough stainless steel chafing dishes to serve a small army. Of course, they were serving an army.
“You could do weddings,” Stan mused to Soos as they stacked folding chairs in the lee of the Shack. “Bar mitzvahs, birthday parties, hell, just rent this stuff out. Be a shame to just let it molder in storage.”
“Set up a chapel?” Soos wiped his brow and grinned. “Might be fun, Mr. Pines. There’s still plenty to do around here.”
“I’m retired, y’know that. I’m only willin’ to crank out brilliant new merchandisin’ concepts for free because I like ya, kid.” Stan plucked off Soos’ cap and ruffled his hair before pivoting to haul down the next stack of chairs.
Dance practice with Mabel became an urgent matter for the last couple days before the event. Clary and Stan carved out half an hour at a time between projects. Mabel played all kinds of music at them - big band, BABBA, a smattering of 80s stuff, one or two classical waltzes - and they worked to adapt.
All of it was still professional. Polite. The impulse to pull Clary close for the slower bits was ever-present, but like hell was he going to screw things up any further. At least she was starting to pick up a familiar glow of satisfaction as they got the measure of one another. As partners they were really beginning to click. He regretted on some mercenary level that there wasn’t a contest or something around to game.
Thursday of that week was a whirlwind of setup and anticipation. Tents popped up like mushrooms across the summer-bleached lawn, the entire Shack crew bustling to get it laid out with time to spare. Clary was either helping move tables into place or tapping into her phone with a frown of focus, tracking the thousand things that needed to get done.
By late afternoon they were as close as they were going to get - the audio equipment would go up in the morning. Mabel and Dipper had been hovering around the edges of the fracas in anticipation, and as things slowed, they pounced.
“Clary, c’mon, we need to let the others finish up out here. I’ve got a couple of drink concepts in the kitchen I really need you to check out..” Mabel caught Clary’s hand and tugged, heading for the house. Clary was still thumbing through some checklist as she allowed herself to be hauled along.
Dipper waved frantically from the porch. Stan took the hint and headed off at a trot down the Shack’s long drive. By the time Clary was back outside, sipping warily from a tall glass of some sparkling pink concoction, he was rounding the corner in the purring Fairlane wagon.
Clary shrieked. She managed to fumble her glass down to the ground and dashed over to the car, running hands along the freshly rechromed grill, then flopping over to stretch her arms out along the polished hood. “I can’t believe it! Look at this thing, it’s like brand new!”
Stan killed the engine, hip-checked the door closed and held out the key, the finest of the Mystery Shack’s souvenir keychains dangling from its ring. “Ford an’ McGucket finished up late yesterday. I still want t’go over the insides one last time, but she’s runnin’ like a champ now.”
The first unrestrained smile he’d seen on her all week lit up her features. With great delicacy Clary hooked a finger into the keyring and plucked the key from his grip. “Thank you. All of you.”
“Nothin’ left to do but get through this party and then you’re finally on the road, huh?” Stan hooked thumbs through his belt loops and gave her the best of his showman’s grins, papering over the regret twisting hard in his gut with practiced ease. Her eyes flicked to his.
“We’ve still got a ton of work to do.” Clary reached out with a fist and cautiously nudged him in the shoulder with her knuckles. “I’ve got to go finish up a last round of prep at Greasy’s. You and Ford be ready to go at quarter to six, got it?”
“Got it.”

“Should I trust you?” You’ve seen midwinter storms friendlier than the icy glint of those eyes.
Of course you can trust me!
We said we’d get the car fixed, we’re getting it fixed!
Honestly? Nope.

WOULDN’T BE SURPRISED
Will watched the color in Stacy’s eyes burn and fade. It was as if he witnessed firsthand how she built walls from scratch brick by brick until she confused herself of her own motives. Will supposed she engineered it all to keep people from invading her space but Stacy thought she did it to keep herself locked in a carefully crafted space so she would not spill at the edges when she falls apart. In simple words, perhaps they were built not to keep others out but to keep herself in.
A lot can happen in just half of a day. The sun rose and Stacy was positive, she breathed in the rays of the sun and reveled in the warmth like a sunflower would. She started the day with a glass half full and went on to spend it with someone who has relatively the same frame of mind as hers. Will Byers sat on the bench perched out front of the crafts store as he waited for Stacy Harrington to arrive. It was rare that he arrived earlier than her but Will went on an early jog and didn’t feel like lounging at home before leaving again so he simply picked up his bike and pedaled his way to the destination. On his way there, he spotted a new flower shop giving away free peonies so he picked two from the basket and continued to ride through Hawkins. When Stacy arrived, he passed her the flowers that already became the highlight of her day. She told him so as she held onto them, even until they walk inside the bright shop.
The two radiated joy which even the man behind the counter noticed. It’s not frequent that kids their age visit the crafts store in the morning. Will and Stacy passed by pans and tubes of pigments, sharing nods and opinions about which brand suits which medium best. They spent half an hour messing with the opened markers with stickers on them that say Test Me, writing silly things. Stacy drew Will dressed up as Willy Wonka just to get on his nerves but Will only laughed it off, not even minding the least bit. The employee would’ve reprimanded them for messing around and touching things on the shelf that generally aren’t allowed to be touched, but he only let it go. The two were the only things keeping him awake then.
Stacy and Will left the crafts store with plenty of paper bags containing the items they splurged on. Although they weren’t bound to meet their friends at the diner until two hours more, they headed there anyway. The two sat on a booth for six to ten people and found entertainment in the new things they got earlier that day. Stacy bought a hollow cardboard in the shape of a W with the intention of painting it just cause Will was nice enough to give her a flower for no reason. Stacy thought it’d be a nice Christmas gift too, so even though it’s just July, she already planned which designs to put on everyone’s letter blocks.
Will watched his friend in amusement, looking up from the sketch pad and charcoal pencil to glance at Stacy’s work every once in a while. She seemed to have forgotten about her milkshake that already melted under the scorching rays of the mid-noon sun. When she was done, she pressed the flowers Will gave her and attached one of them to the letter block before giving it to him. Stacy told herself she wouldn’t mind doing that again if it meant seeing Will smile the way he did when he thanked her.
Their day only got better when Max arrived and ordered a big serving of nachos which she shared with the both of them. She took a shot at drawing but got bored of it easily when she noted how she butchered her attempt to sketch her friends. The table was tidy and free of any art materials when Lucas and Dustin joined them. They were already in the middle of a casual argument when they sat at the booth. It was something about Star Wars and Star Trek that Stacy didn’t pay much attention to. She found Dustin’s facial expressions more comical than the points he was making.
Mike and Jane arrived a little late, and quite frankly, Max thought the two wouldn’t attend at all and just curve the invitation. Lucas paused the argument to tell the two as soon as they walk inside the shop, “Late members treat everyone to some pie.” Will nods to this, already thinking about a slice of the diner’s well-known apple pie.
In the middle of this, Stacy remained quiet. She couldn’t care less about pie or the two being late. What caught her attention the moment the two sauntered in with synced steps and mirrored bright eyes were the colorful dessert in their respective hands. It sure feels just like yesterday when Stacy told Mike about them.
Mike of course knew that the bubblegum-flavored ice cream was unique to Stacy; she called it a secret, special flavor after all. Stacy knows that Mike knows that but she wonders if he cares at all. It seems childish for her to be so worked up about some secret ice cream flavor— of course anyone can know about it and order it and share it with someone else but it’s not the ice cream itself that bothered Stacy. It’s the fact that she shared that with Mike before he acted as if looking at her burned his eyes. She considered the secret flavor a trademark for her and Mike because like it, they weren’t out there yet and almost like they were special too. Stacy inwardly laughs at herself for thinking that way. It’s almost pathetic, really. Now she wonders if he takes her to that place he called special. She wouldn’t be surprised.
“Stac?” Will nudges from next to her. She snaps out of her headspace, looking up at Will so he could repeat whatever was going on while she disassociated. “We were voting on which flavor pie to get.”
Stacy blinks at the mundane question, not giving a single fuck whatever the pie flavor is because personally, she doesn’t have the appetite to consume anything. But as Will mouths ‘apple’ to her, she only repeats, “Apple,” before she’s back in her head.
Stacy has always had a thing for telling what certain emotions people are feeling at certain times. She’s had that even when she was younger and could tell whenever her parents are in a good enough mood to let her bike around the neighborhood with just her childhood friends sans Steve. It’s just funny how now that she’s scrambling to specify which feelings are invading her head, she can’t tell apart between disappointment, hurt, anger, and sadness. It’s like they all joined forces and morphed into a mega-emotion that clawed at Stacy’s chest relentlessly. At this point, all she wants to do is to lie on her bed at home and stare at her ceiling.
It took Will a hot minute to notice the shift in Stacy’s energy. He was too caught up in his apple-pie infused excitement to feel how tense his friend truly is. Everyone else stayed oblivious, Max too who usually has trouble finding out other people’s feelings though she tries for her friends. Their other friends can tell between emotions though, but even they were kept in the dark. Will understands why they can’t pick up on the signals because for one, Stacy hides them well but not well enough for Will to be able to blink at and move on and two, it’s familiar to him. Maybe it does take one to know one.
Soon enough, pie is served and each help themselves to a slice, except for Stacy who continues fumbling with the condiments on the table. Dustin is the first to ask, “Stacy, you okay? You’ve been real quiet.”
Stacy looks directly at Dustin, “Yeah, of course.”
Max is already interested though, because only then did she realize that Stacy hasn’t uttered a word ever since they asked her which flavor of pie to get— the pie that she doesn’t even want a piece of. “I need to go to the restroom.” Max says, moving out of the booth with a knowing look at Stacy. Of course Max doesn’t usually go to the toilet with Stacy having to accompany her, but she does want to talk to her alone.
When they‘re inside the ladies’ room, Stacy waits for Max to enter a cubicle and do her business but Max only leans against the line of sinks next to her.
“What’s really the matter, Stac? I’m sorry I only figured out now... I’m not really good at reading people.” Max looks down bashfully before looking back up at her friend.
Stacy sighs inaudibly, “I just don’t feel good.”
Max furrows her eyebrows worriedly, “Do you feel sick? Wanna go home?” She almost reaches up to get a feel of Stacy’s forehead, but she stops when he notices her friend’s eyes gloss a little. “Hey...” she continues softly, “You can tell me, Stacy. I’m right here. Friends right?” Max would hate to assume that it has anything to do with Mike though she has a feeling that it does, just because she knows that not everything that goes on in Stacy’s life includes the boy. It could be something else, so she can’t rule out that possibility.
Stacy shakes her head, feeling overly dramatic and diva-like. She feels so stupid for caring so much about some stupid ice cream. No one gets as hurt about a fucking ice cream as she is. She hates feeling this way. “It’s stupid...” she trails off.
“It’s not if it upsets you.” Max adds carefully. She may be Stacy’s best friend but she still doesn’t want to overstep boundaries.
Stacy rubs her right eye as if it’s irritated, “Just some ice cream.” She tries to appear as nonchalantly as possible, but because Max really tries her absolute best to help, she’s finally cracked the code.
Max rakes her mind for any significance in relation to ice cream. It takes her a few seconds, but she does remember that Stacy told Mike about a secret ice cream flavor at Jodie’s Creamery that can get anyone free ice cream. Max supposes it’s not just ice cream. Despite this, she doesn’t know what to do about her revelation. She hasn’t dealt with boys who make her feel special for a week and then blatantly ignore her right after. Sure, Mike doesn’t have to do the same things with Stacy, but the least he could do is acknowledge her when she’s in the room. The boy acts as if Stacy’s invisible even when she’s right in front of him. Max can only offer a warm hug at her best friend until they both have to go back to the booth so the others won’t suspect a thing. All that, and Stacy still wants to put up a front.
The moment Stacy got home, all she wanted to do was wallow in her sadness, turn her AC up, and bury herself in warm blankets. She thinks of one that she brought from Sydney that still smelled like her old room. However, she’s stopped by Steve who already built up the courage to ask Stacy about what has been going on between her and Mike. He meant to ask her about it before, but he has no idea what has been going on so there’s no possibility he would have known that Stacy doesn’t want to talk about it.
Today really took a turn and tolled at Stacy that all the pent-up emotion she swept under the rug piled on top of each other and spilled right through the cracks in the walls she built. Tears well in her eyes as she reaches for a hug from her brother. He has always been a sure source of comfort for her when she was younger and would frequently fall off her bike and hurt herself. She cried, hugged her brother, and moved on. Stacy just hopes it’s that easy nowadays.
“Hey, you’ll be okay. I got you.” Steve mutters, bringing up a hand to cradle his sister’s head the way he usually did when they were younger. Stacy wonders how she survived when she got herself hurt thousands of miles away from Hawkins where her emergency person was.
Stacy sniffles, “I feel terrible.” She admits out loud, thinking that if she lets it out, it would slowly leave her system.
“I know, I know. I’m sorry for asking.” Steve inhales, regretting it already. He wished he knew about this when things were still okay so that he would have seen Stacy all smiley and blushy even if it was because of Mike Wheeler who he already had mixed feelings for the moment Stacy got back.
“I’m sorry I ruined your shirt,” Stacy leans back to see the wet splotch she left on her brother’s shirt.
Steve chuckles lightly, “Oh shut up. You used to leave snot on me when the younger you cried but you didn’t care then.”
A short laugh escapes from Stacy’s lips, swollen from trying to hold back her tears earlier on. She feels terrible, she really does, but she thinks that if she can laugh right now, things are only going to get better. From where she’s standing, she can almost see light peeking through the cracks in the walls she built.

“Team, we have everything?  Bicycle pump?  Can opener?“  Are they preparing a jail break or fixing the TARDIS console?
Pickle jar?!?
Oh I like that shot of Ed putting on the hat
Oh God... ooooohhhhh God.
“But right now, Jeremiah's maze may actually be the safest place for them.“  *nods*
OK, a 2 by 10 (whatever that is) plank is not going to barricade the door!
Did they say open the armory?  Oh my God.
“This wake is just intended to distract us while his followers hit the real target.“  What’s the real target?
Ooooohhhh....
*claps hands*  I like this plaaannn....
*sing songs*  [Electricity whirring down]
*The generator turns on*  Oooohhhh.... ooooohhh... wow!
Oh my gosh, there’s a solution poster of the maze on the wall in Jeremiah’s office.
That [generator] is HUGE!
“You’ve kept this project a secret, yes?”  “No one outside of Wayne Enterprises knows it exists”  *hisses*  This just seems really dubious...
“It's the ones who are closest to you that you have to keep your eye on.“  OK what does that mean?  What does it meannn...
“Arkham Asylum sent me [Jeremiah] Jerome’s personal effects.  And amongst them, I found his diary.”  What?
Haha oh my God!
I don’t want to even ask why there’s a glittery ice cream cone sticker on the cover
Whoa...
“Maybe you [Jeremiah] shouldn't spend so much time reading it.“   Yeah....
Oh my God...
Why don’t you actually close it?
*Bruce puts his hand down in the middle of the book*  There we go.
“Your brother is dead, Jeremiah.  It's time for you to come out of this bunker and join the world.“  *nods*
This just seems really dubious!
“Jerome Valeska’s acolytes are kicking off again”  *whispers*  Oh shit!
God, look how freaking paranoid Jeremiah is!  Man!
Is that how it’s gonna kick off?  What happened to his face?  Didn’t it turn white?
“He’s alive and he’s coming after me!”  He’s dead.  He’s dead.
*Glass shatters in the background*  Oh God, please...
Shoot...
*Alfred gets attacked offscreen*  Oh my Goddd!!
“Bruce, I [Jeremiah] need to tell you something.”  Oh, he’s gonna tell him about the gas!
I can’t freaking believe that this is the same actor.  Bravo, Cameron!
“What if I [Bruce] could show you he's [Jerome] dead and buried?“  Is that gonna help?
“Then I’ll [Jeremiah] try.”  There we go!
“You’re a good friend, Bruce.”  *clutches chest and leans back in pain*
Ugh, man, they’re gonna set this up and then it’s just gonna go downhill from there
Oh God, who brought the chainsaw?
Oh my God...
Lee!
Is that the Jongleur character?
AN:  Yes
“Hi, guys.”  *in best George Clooney Batman voice* Hi guys, I’m Jim!
Freaking Jim gritting his teeth... I love it
Oh my God...
Oh my God, what happened?!?!?  WHAT HAPPENED?!?
“He [Alfred] was on his way to your office. He'll wait for us there.“  Bruce....
“What was that?”  Oh my God, he’s so paranoid!
Oh my God, they actually dug it up...
*Jeremiah bolts*  Haaaaahahaha!  Oh my God!
Yeah, no, Jerome’s dead.  He’s so dead.  I’m sorry, man, but he dead.
Oh my God... they’re [Oswald and Butch] watching cartoons!
Wouldn’t make-up work for Butch?
“Not run apace”.... that’s a new term
“Did you [Oswald] just shush me [Butch]?!?!?”  Hahahahaha!
“Confusion is always an opportunity for the clear-headed.“  Oooohhh, that’s a good line.
You’re gonna interrogate him [Jongleur] with a cattle prod near reporters?!?  Are you serious?
Dude...
*The Riddler arrives*  Oh crap!
“We need a costume shop.”  Oh my God, they’re gonna go in disguised as some of Jerome’s followers.  Oh my God.
Lee, get up!
I like that dude with the black lace umbrella in the background!
Guys, what are we doing?
Of course he [Jeremiah] hides in a freaking... mausoleum.
That shot of Bruce is awesome.
“You can trust me because I'm your friend!”  *whimpers*
“I want you to be my friend, Bruce.”  *clutches chest*
“And then you came along and offered me everything I could dream of.”  “Because I believe in you, Jeremiah.“  Oh my God...
This is breaking my heart.  This is freaking breaking my heart!
“All we have to do is get out of here.“  *starts singing “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place” by The Animals*
*Jeremiah fires off a warning shot near Bruce’s feet*  WHOA!
Where did he get the gun?
“You can fool everyone else but I [Jeremiah] know you made a switch.”  Oh my God...
*actually clutches hair in stress*  Oh my God...
“And you can't hide, not even behind that new face of yours.“  What?  Wait, what?  What?
“I know it’s you.”  What?
“I know it’s you, Jerome.”  Whaaaat?!?
Oh my God, Jeremiah, noooo....
“You killed my friend Bruce. Now it's time to put you back in your grave.“  Nooo....
*Jerome’s casket is revealed to be actually a beer cooler*  HAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA...
*slaps chair in hilarity*  Oh my gosh...
*Lee accidentally knocks out Ed*  Oh my God!
Jiiiimmm..... this is such a bad idea, Jiiiimmmm....
OK, there’s the generator.  They left it on?  Why did they leave it on?  They just wanted to see how long it would run?
Whoa.... what’s going on?  What’s going on?
*Jerome’s corpse is found propped up next to his tombstone*  OHHH MY GOD!
Jerome’s hair looks different... whoa...
*The Jester points a gun at Jim*  Oh my God!
Is he [Jerome] just.. gaslighting the crap outta him [Jeremiah]?
*Jeremiah goes after Bruce with Jerome’s straight razor*  Oh my God!
*gasps when Jerome starts getting strangled by someone offscreen*
Oh my God...
AN:  Take a sip every time I’ve said this during this reaction.  Careful, there’s a lot of them.
“Hold still, brother.  Let's peel off that grotesque facade.”  Oh my God...
HE’S DOING THE VOICE!
What kind of rule is that sharp that it can embed itself in a wall?
OOOOOHHHH!!!
OK, what’s going on?  Seriously, what’s going on?  What’s going on, what’s going on, what’s going on...
*jaw drops to the floor*
Whaatt... whaaat...
*Jeremiah shoots one of the cult followers through the chin*  AAAAAHHHHH!!
What’s going on, what’s going on...
*absolutely screams when Jeremiah starts wiping off his makeup*
*absolutely screams again when Jeremiah does the same thing in the video that Jim is watching*
OOOOOOOOHHHHHHH!
Oh my God, there’s ten minutes left!  WHAAAAAATT?!?
“Other than some mild cosmetic effects...”  Hahaha my God...
Oh my God...
I just wanna know where Jerome found the time to make a freaking journal of all his escapades
Wait, so did he [Jeremiah] set up the whole thing?
Ohhhh my God....
“I [Jeremiah] would hate to be within a mile of it [the generator] if it were to... overload.”  Oh my God...
“Jerome wanted to slather you [Bruce] in honey and have you eaten alive by corpse beetles.“   Eeewww...
Also, whoa there, Jerome.  Calm down.
Can’t believe I’m kink-shaming a dead clown.  What has this world come to?
“Are you gonna listen?  Or you gonna behave like children?”  Pfftttt.....
See, I [Jeremiah] don't want to kill you [Bruce], because I want to show you how much I've changed things. How much we've changed things.”  Oh my God... oh my God....
Bruce doesn’t know about the generators.  Ohhhh shit!
Oh my God, they’re not gonna kill off Jim!
“See those generators that we built with your [Bruce’s] money, they work even better as bombs.“  Oh my God...
*gasps when Jeremiah’s bunker blows up*
“Jim Gordon is dead.”  No Jim ain’t dead.  C’mon.
“In fact, I [Jeremiah] can honestly say... you [Bruce] are my very best friend.“  *through gritted teeth*  Oh my Goddd...
My hands are actually shaking...
“I [Oswald] don't expect you [Jongleur] to betray the memory of that old corpse.“  Hoooo...
Roll credits!
“Is your [Butch’s] plan to gain his sympathy by reciting your tale of woe?“  Pffffttt....
*Butch starts shoving chicken bones up Jongleur’s nose*  AAAAAAHHHHHH!
Hahaha Oswald in the background!
*pumps fist*  Whoo whoo!
So do they [Ed and Lee] actually like each other here?  What’s going on?
“I'm assuming you [Ed] brought one of those [clown costumes] for me [Lee]?”  “Oh.  Now, I would be into that, but they only had one.“  Hahahaha oh my Goddd...
*jams out to “Rockers” by U.K. Subs*
WHERE’S JIM?!?
*Ed and Lee share a kiss*   Oooooohhhh....
“Don't just wrap me [Ed] around your finger, Lee.“  That is exactly what’s she’s doing.
“You know, it's funny, it kind of reminds me [Harvey] of my first apartment in Crown Point.”   “How long ago was that?”  “I still live there.”  Heehee...
*Ecco shoots the guards*  OOHHHHH
Wait, are they [Jeremiah and Ecco] holding each others’ arms?  Almost protectively?
I’m.. actually totally down to see where this relationship goes in this show.  I know it was mentioned that Ecco is “devoted” to Jeremiah so I’m not sure how far that goes.
There’s definitely an implication of romance in this bit but I’m very interested in how this goes down.
Ohhhh my God...

An Equation Heaven Sent, 1: Holy Water
Table of Contents
Melancholy had made himself quite comfortable at the slave market bar. It was his second trip out to Nuka World, and he still couldn't quite adjust to the thought of having permanent control over these people, wearing shock collars as they were. Geek made sure of it that these enslaved individuals were treated better than before he'd become the raiders' overboss, but despite being a force of nature when he really got going, he'd been largely unable to free them from captivity altogether. For Melancholy, it was enough to subdue, manipulate. But these people here... After another shot of vodka, he wondered how much one cost.
"Sir..." His Handy-tron seemed mildly agitated, though it might have been more on account that he couldn't process how to articulate what was wrong, than what was actually wrong.
He hadn't noticed that it was just him and all the slaves left in the circular enclosure that had before the war, housed one of the larger gift shops of the park grounds. Even the wanderers and the two traveling merchants not shackled down had made themselves scarce. Everyone was quiet and standing perfectly still. He was about to question whether he'd said something off color without realizing it, but heavy footsteps trod the hard, dry clay of the open market behind him and he swiveled slowly to turn, assuming it was Geek from the weight in each step.
The figure, however, was not their overboss. A messy black ponytail topped a pale specter of a man who towered over everyone he passed. Wearing pastor's vestments patched together from other garments as to actually fit him, he stood calmly beside 'Choly at the bar, and peered down ambiguously at him with piercing, gaunt silvery eyes.
"Fff, Father Wachusett," Maddox greeted through a thin veneer. His grey eyes twitched. "H-- how can I make obeisance to you today?"
"Mm." For a moment he simply glanced, unblinking, at the half-inebriated Operator dreg. 'Choly began to sweat, and crossed himself, out of some atavistic prewar compulsion. The father's hard brow lightened after a minute, and he laughed abruptly and leaned down to wrap most of his arm around 'Choly's shoulders. "A comedian. You must be new here."
All 'Choly could do was nod rapidly with a frozen posture, though he soon glanced over the top of his sunglasses and held upward the rest of his fifth of vodka to offer it. Wachusett declined with a broad sliver of a smile. He patted 'Choly hard on the back, then crouched to lean on the counter with his arms, and glancing still downward at the slave who ran the chem bar, he produced from the rope at his waist a fistful of soft, brown leather and dropped it in front of the slave.
"Bloodworm fillets," Maddox murmured intently, running a hand through his short brown hair as he inspected the contents of the wadded up leather with the other. He quickly drew the butchered meat below the counter and into a cooler. "Man, ain't nobody do a cut of meat like you. Gimme twenty-four hours, Father. I'm good for it."
"I'll be back tomorrow, then." The giant turned from where he crouched to flash a fang-filled grin at 'Choly. "You should come back tomorrow, too. Same time. Fresh meat."
"Y... yessir..."
A deep, low chuckle rumbled in Wachusett's chest and he stood, tacitly waving a hand over the scrawny Operator's shot glass. Then he put his huge hand on Choly's head jokingly and paused, lingering long enough to make the dreg visibly panic before parting ways.
Once the enormous stranger had left, everyone audibly sighed with relief.
"Mackenzie, I'm shocked he didn't come to see YOU for once," Shelbie exclaimed, before clapping a hand over her mouth realizing she was in presence of a superior.
"No, it's fine," 'Choly mumbled, repeatedly crossing himself like he'd just met the devil himself. "Who or what is Father Wachusett?"
"Maximum tilt, guys," Maddox uttered. "Wachusett capped our newest Operator."
"Hope that means he likes ya," Shelbie commented, not having left her stall across the way. "Last one he blessed the drink of, I don't remember seeing or hearing of 'em again."
'Choly looked down at his drink to find a single bottle cap floating in it. Rather than fish it out, he finished his shot and shook it onto the counter to retrieve it. No longer feeling like the formality of the glass had a place, he proceeded to drink from the bottle.
"Need I re-me pie-self. Who or what. Put this in my drink."
"He's not a Raider," Mackenzie answered. The blonde medic slave walked over nearer, but didn't leave her stall perimeter. "He's been here at least as long as we have. He doesn't talk much, but we know he lives north of the dam."
"I heard somebody's once shot him right through the heart and he carried on like it didn't even happen," Shelbie amended intensely, poorly hiding her excitement that Wachusett might pick off another one of their overlords. "Those teeth are what scares me, though."
"Is he gone?" a Pack member moaned cautiously from the West doorway. "I saw him leave but--"
"He's gone," Maddox told her. "Can I fix you up, Miss Foxy? I've got some Jet with your name on it, beautiful."
"Funny, that sounds like just the thing," 'Choly remarked dully, fidgeting with the cap on the counter. "Here, you can even have my seat... it's a wolf, not a fox, right?"
"Yeah. So stop hoggin' the bar, Miss Prim n Posy. Get outta my seat." The fur-loving young girl shoved him to get him moving, and pretty much threw his cane at him from where it had been hooked on the counter. "An' take your tin can with ya before it ends up like N.I.R.A."
"Wanna try that again?" he snapped. The small gadget dagger slipped out of his cane and against her throat. "You insult me, and you threaten my Handy. I don't know what you're saying you did to this N.I.R.A., but I know you didn't just call me female." He took another swig of liquor and stayed himself against her. "I have enormous patience normally, but you must day the-- imagine I've been having if the Father spoke to me personally. Please be mindful that I don't have an excuse to gift Mason a new pelt rug."
"An Operator with a knife," the Pack member said, wide eyed but ludicrous. "No offense, but half of ya look like you could be a guy or a lady. Yer all obsessed with preenin'. Old world displays of position n power... they seem all right. Fur n' fangs do the job just as well though, if you ask me."
"Fur has its place," 'Choly agreed warmly, putting his knife away. "I have a piece myself," he quickly added, realizing that despite his pleasant change of tone, his choice of words might be misconstrued. He motioned around his lapels. "A stole."
"I dunno what animal that is," she replied, touching her throat, "but it must be as weird as you if you like it. ...Don't do that again if you like having all your fingers."
"Don't give me fine to, and we'll be a reason."
"Sir... are we attempting the trifecta again?" Angel inquired worriedly, trailing behind him.
He hobbled off back to The Parlor for the night, suddenly not much feelinh like walking all the way to Galactic Zone just for his own bed. There were still a few spare mattresses there, since most of Nuka Town USA had relocated to the parks that had been divided up among them. Melancholy could only imagine how cramped it must have been with them all at The Parlor, before Geek had drawn their straws for them and divvied up the entire Nuka World premises between the Operators and the Pack. And he was all right with getting ribbed by Lizzie, for not having the care or energy to go where William had stationed him. He could head up there tomorrow.
...After he saw Wachusett again.
That was the last thought that wandered across the folds of his brain as he collapsed in front of the animatronic Bottle and Cappy statue, not even making it into the front door of The Parlor before blacking out face-first in a gutter-blur of fair food garbage.

for ships! leodle, killugon, leopika! have fun :DDDDD
previously: leopika _ killugon
Here it is! I warn you this shit is over 2k words and it’s all your fault. It truly got out of hand, you can just feel I’m dying to write them lol *sobs*.
who’s the werewolf and who’s thehunter:
He blends well with people, but shecan smell his ilk. She can smell the remnants of the last moon on him. They sit at a bar, only three emptystools separating them. He lolls around his whiskey glass, she takes a sip fromhers. They ordered the same thing, only his was filled with ice cubes, and herswas heavy and concentrated.
They’ve been doing that for quite some time now(two weeks, specifically), without ever exchanging a word. He knows that she knows what he is,but he’s a werewolf in love with the city, in love with ordinary people, and she’sa woman with a dangerous job, a woman relegating the true purpose of keepingtrack of this man, of this creature.
The nature of the job requires nosympathies, but sometimes he smiles at her, and sometimes she convinces herselfthat there was simply no chance to catch him.
He smiles, and orders two morewhiskey glasses for them. Cheadle promises herself to carry onthe task the next day.
She never does.
who’s the mermaid and who’s thefisherman:
There were other sailors who heardof him, of it, of the creature who loiters along their shores and drownstheir fishermen. Cheadle cares not for the rumors, but as she prepares for a second dive, she sees it.
It’s as if a miniature sun zipped byher, like someone had strapped their gold to a shark, glittering, mesmerizing,it swam around her little boat, and stopped.
Torn between fear and curiosity, Cheadlestretched her neck to the edge, just to chance a glimpse of it, just to becapable of saying that she, too, little pearl diver, had seen the merman. She is startled, coming face to facewith an inhuman mouth stretching in a grin, filled with rows of sharp teeth, and she shot her head back in fear, only to be met with a pair of curious eyes, dark green like muddy waters, rimmed in golden lines extending, wreathing, coiling all over its (his) body.
Cheadle observed as the mermanpulled his arm out of the water, and placed a clawed hand, covered with glimmeringblue scales, on the edge of her boat. Her heart fell and her own hand skitteredover her waist in search of her trusty knife, and just when she was about to unsheatheit from her belt, the merman opened his mouth wide, wider, and let out a long, thin, and curled tongue. He lifted up his other hand, and unfurled his tongue, letting a single, iridescent pearl drop onto his outstretched palm.
He offered it to her, but Cheadle wantedsomething else. She wanted his name. She wanted his truth, but it seemed thatthe pearl was the only truth he knew how to communicate to her, for all thesounds his throat uttered made no sense to her human ears; they were achingly beautiful, but she could not comprehend them. He must be saying something, trying to know hertruth, but all they could do is stare at each other, curious and scared andexcited.
The creature reached with his big, sturdy hands, slowly, tentatively, in a way that spoke of fear, and took thehand still gripping the hilt of her knife. Cheadle made no move as he pulledher hand gently towards him, and watched as he ran the tips of his claws alongthe edge of her trembling fingers, until finally, he placed the rare pearl inher palm, and awkwardly prodded her fingers to close over his gift.
He made another sound in his throat, and unclasped his fingers over the edge, breaking what kept him connected to her boat, andthat perpetual grin on his face wilted into something she could recognize as resemblinghuman sadness, but not quite.
“I’m sorry,” she said, unsure of howto feel about his quietly retreating form. She didn’t know if he understoodher, she herself did not know why an apology poured out of her mouth.
As she tightened her grip around thepearl, something told her she’ll never see him again.
who’s the barista and who’s thecoffee addict:
Leorio’s weirdest customer justsauntered in, around her that familiar air of indignation, in her hand today’snewspapers, every single one of them. She read every goddamn newspaper in thecountry, and other countries too.
She splayed her mandatory workload (or was ita habit?) on the same table she always occupied, adjusted her rounded glassesover her nose, and buried her head in the papers.
He knew her name. Cheadle. A ghostwriter.Everyone here knew this. He also knew that the flask she hid so well under herjacket contained coffee, and that was something only he knew. She had coffee,in a flask, and it was a quaint thing of hers, a thing he discovered when theyfound themselves making out like idiots behind his workplace.
Back then he offered her acigarette, and she let him take a sip from her coffee once they both came totheir senses, and now she had a habit of ignoring him entirely until shefinished reading every single paper situated before her. He would steal glancesat her, at her messy hair and her little snorts and groans when she readsomething funny or troubling.
He still didn’t know, however, how she managed tosneak sips from her flask whenever he wasn’t looking, fully knowing thatcustomers here were not allowed to bring in their own drinks.  When she finishes reading herpapers, though, she would look up and smile. It was a small gesture, barelyrecognizable, but he’d see it, because it was only meant for him.
“You’re my friend.” She had said tohim once, when they were lounging on the roof of this building, passing him a half-smokedcigarette stained with her lipstick.
She would wait for him to finish hisshift, and then they would go for a night walk in the city, talk about theirjobs, about the news, about that new TV show neither of them has time to watch, and about that future book-in-the-making, the one Cheadle keeps talking about, andthen they would bid each other goodnight right in front of that same tree.
It neverwent beyond that, not after their kiss.
On that roof, he took the cigarettefrom her fingers, closing his mouth over the pink traces of her lipstick. “You’remy friend, too.”
who’s the writer and who’s theeditor:
(A continuation of the previous one)
“Are you really sure about this?”
She nodded. “Yes, I’m sure.”
Leorio shifted his eyes from theview of jotting skyscrapers and the endless web of lights to squint at her. “I toldyou I haven’t edited anything in ages. I used to do it for some classmates, formoney, you know, so I’m not sure I’m the one for the job.”
When Cheadle squinted just as hardat him, he felt the need to retaliate. “I mean you’re a professional writer, shouldn’tyou have someone who actually does editing as an actual job to help you here?”
“There are indeed many, but I want youto do the job, how hard is that to understand?”
They were both too stubborn to cometo an agreement.
Cheadle sighed. “I’m not asking fora favor here; this is a job offer, Leorio.”
He rolled his eyes. “And I don’t acceptit, how hard is that to understand?”
She groaned. “Fine, whatever. Forgetit. Change the subject, talk about something else.”
“Oh come on, don’t be mad at me, I don’tlike it when you say ‘let’s change the subject’.”
“I’m not mad at you, I’m justdisappointed.” She retorted, pulling out her coffee flask.
“Hey that’s even worse!”
She looked up at him while taking along sip from her flask, and when she finished, she shoved it back in herjacket and got up. “I’m leaving.”
For a moment he thought she wasbluffing, but then she really did saunter around the pipes and metal anddiscarded junk on the roof, making her way towards the exit door.
“Cheadle!” hecalled after her, but she didn’t turn around. “Look, I’ll consider.”
That made her turn around.  “You will?”
“Yeah.”
“Really?”
He screeched. “Really, now get yourass back here.” he said to her, poking the space her butt left behind.
Cheadle offered him a smile, andmade a beeline back to where she was sitting beside him, and it took him aminute to notice she chose to sit just a bit closer to him. It made his heartflutter, but he said nothing.
“Thanks, Leorio.”
“I still didn’t agree, y’know.”
“It’s not about the editing job.”
“What is it about then?”
She shrugged. “This.” her hand wasalready reaching back for the flask. “Everything.”
It came out as a whisper, the kindof sound she makes when her mouth disobeys her brain and utters what she doesn’twant to say aloud.
Leorio grinned at her. “You’re welcome.”
who’s the witch and who’s thefamiliar:
The tallest wizard of his age wasn’thaving a fun time at all, not when this unholy, green, smart mouthed, know itall dog-familiar -who was supposed to, for all means and purposes, be his loyalcompanion and accomplice- was instructing him on how to utter the syllables ofthe spell right, dammit.
Leorio groaned. “You know, I didn’t graduatefrom the academy for this shit.”
Cheadle, tiny by his side, jauntingin fluttery little steps beside his spindly legs, accompanying him as they shopped for the ingredients of a stomach-cleansingpotion, gave him an unimpressed side-eye glance. “Graduating from the academymeans very little if you can’t even spell correctly, noobie.”
“Excuse me?” he screeched. “I’msupposed to be the boss here.”
“You do indeed flatter yourself.” Cheadlebarked in mock. “The one who knows more is the boss.”
Leorio crossed his arms. “Oh really?”
“Really.” she retorted. “Look, here’sthe shop.”
Leorio swerved around, following hersudden turn. “I still don’t understand why it is important that I do all these stupidmissions.” he confessed to her as they entered the shop. “I just wanna get to thegood stuff already, you know, where I fight off demons and learn secret healingspells.”
“Baby steps, wizard boy, baby steps.”she said.
Once in the safety of a magic shop, shebegan transforming into her human form; Leorio was yet to get used to thesight, watching in a mix of amusement and disgust as the green and white furreceded, and as the small dog eyes grew larger and greener, and when it was alldone, the only thing that remained of his dog companion were a pair of ears anda dog snout.
Cheadle turned to him and smiled. “Whatabout you stop staring, hand me my glasses, and begin picking up the ingredients, no?”
who’s the knight and who’s theprince(ss):
Cheadle stopped mid swing, took abreath, and kept her eyes focused on the tip of the sword before her.
“Is there a need of yours I can attend to, your highness?”
His highness seemed startled by herquestion, oblivious to the fact that she was aware of his presence from themoment he stood on the porch and began watching her train.
“Um… nothing,” he stumbled over hiswords. “I just wish to thank you for saving my life during the hunting trip. Youwere truly brave.” Cheadle squared her shoulders and raised her head higher. “Thatarrow was poisoned, it could have killed you.”
“It is only my duty.” she replied, loosening her grip on the hilt of her sword. “Every knight would be honored toprotect you, your highness.”
He chuckled in a way that made her thinkof alleyway boys, and not of princes. Cheadle wondered how a man of his ilkcould ever become their future king; he did not emit an aura of power, orgrace, or authority the way royals were ought to do. He was different from therest of his kin, carried himself more lightly, smiled more often than he should, and his presence lacked oppressiveness or aggression.
She found him oddity, but a princewas a prince, and no matter how high her rank was, she knew that these thoughtsof hers were unsavory, and she remained standing upright, on guard, waiting forhim to issue an order or dismiss her, but he didn’t.
After a long moment of silence, hescratched his nose and shifted his eyes back at her. “What about we have aduel?”
But princes don’t duel with knights, princes duel only with other royals. “I’m afraid that would be inappropriatefor a man of your rank, your highness.”
He shrugged. “I don’t care aboutthese things. I haven’t swung my sword in quite some time, I must say I feelrusty.”
Even more reason to decline hisoffer. It would not do to beat the future king, and Cheadle refused to fighteasy, not even with him. However, a simple knight such as she had no right toargue with a prince, so she gave the man a reluctant nod. “Do you have your sword ready, yourhighness?”
He laughed. “I think I left itaround here somewhere.”
Author note: I love my leodle either soft and sad or upbeat and snarky and there’s no in between. Also yeah I hope whoever read this enjoyed it.
