Hm. I don't really think there will be a particular event that'll cause people to suddenly change their perspective, the only way I see any kind of ~catalyst to changing opinions on 13 in a dramatic way is if RTD really does Whedon himself, and to be fair even thought I said i doubt there will be a catalyst, I genuinely think there's at least a chance he will actually do this because fandom is a fickle beast that will turn on people as if a bird on the wind. The fatal mix of hero worship and nostalgia, the time gap where fandom has had More than enough time to become attached to their own view of things were back in the day even if that view doesn't entirely mesh with what actually transpired. The passage of time leaving viewers nowadays far less forgiving of the type of things rife in his work that can be written off on 'product of its time' for 2006 but will not be if they show up again in 2023. The expectations being So high. People only have So much ability to write things off before the straw breaks the camel's back.

I have seen this pattern in fandom before, and yeah it might not happen, but this is also potentially whedon after the first avengers movie being everybody's best buddy straight to being their most disdained after aou.

Generally speaking, when shit like that happens, people tend to reassess preconceived notions. a 'why did we think that one was ever bad?' as a result of the above eventuality is the only way i see some kind of Thing happening that softens people on 13.

But, also, those tags was me kind of responding to the op's tags on their gifset, because despite the fact that the people on the internet have been sipping the nmd's misogynistic koolaid light without even realising it for years, the vast majority of viewers Not being chronically online haven't been doing that and were fine with her era. Judging her popularity only from the people obsessed with the show on the internet is absurd, and i include my positive views in that. I am not the average viewer lol, neither are the weirdos being hateful, no matter How much it benefits them to make people think Everybody hates it and that they're peddling the Bestest Opinion and that it's not cool to like the girl doctor.

So with the caveat that I do not think she's actually unpopular (radiotimes favourite doctor poll my beloved. 10 & 13 coming in highest with 21% of the vote each. Over 50,000 votes in total and he received only abt 90 more than her. There was no way to victimise anybody on this poll with strategic voting, no amount of block voting to support one doctor could dent her total and she came second out of all the doctors by a few measly votes. The general public Like Her.)

In time, it will soften. The misogynists will stop spending all their time talking about how uncool it is to like her to peer pressure people and the ones who don't eventually stop will be marked as losers obsessed with insulting her not worth listening to, so people will just watch it with no one sitting on their shoulder telling them it's bad. People will rewatch it with an open mind instead. I literally have had (multiple times) people in my activity page saying once they stopped listening to people saying how bad 13's era was and went back to it with an open mind it was good! This was a few different people! This has already happened and will continue to.

The nmd squad, quite successfully, were allowed to make it uncool to like her. They were open that their reasoning was misogynistic and even if they didn't use the word, anybody who knows what that means knows they are, but it was not called out as such and it poisoned the well because it gave them legitimacy they did not deserve. It won't stay that way forever, though. People will watch it and judge it Fairly without their influence. Let it have flaws without using them as an excuse to express hatred they already felt for no reason. Let it shine where it shines. Discuss its issues analytically instead of as a gotcha. Talk about themes. Discuss the characters.

I got through being in the fandom and open about my love for it when it aired, and i sure as hell am not missing the moment when people stop being weird and can just be normal about it. Put your money where your mouth is Aidan I want a thematic analysis of the sex scene in Jason X (I have never seen Jason X)

Oh MAN okay so Jason X is, possibly hands down, my favourite bad movie. Its the funniest bad horror sequel I've ever seen. It's got space stations. It's got cryogenics. It's got INCREDIBLY 00s fashion. David Cronenberg, yes, The Cronenberg, specifically asked to be in it only so he could be killed in a very stupid way after 2 minutes of screen time. At one point a guy gets killed by being knocked off a platform onto a big spiral aerial type thing and you watch his corpse corkscrew the whole way down and I laughed so hard i had to pause the movie because I thought I might either choke or piss myself. It's Bad. I love it unreservedly.

That said, it has been a while since I watched it so I am a little vague on the details and have refreshed myself by skimming the Wikipedia page. Tried to rewatch the scene but I am on a bus so my signal is not quite good enough. I will do my best from memory.

The Friday the 13th movies have always had a theme of responsibility of adults and older teens for the kids and teenagers in their care and, by extension, are often thematically full of Having Sex (Ir)Responsibly. The plot twist in the first one is actually really good - Jason is not the killer! Jason is a child who dies in an accident at his summer camp because the counsellors supposed to be keeping watch on him snuck off to shag in the storage room instead. The killer is his mother, seeking to avenge him by murdering the camp counsellors who she catches having sex. It's a core founder of the "if you fuck you die" trope in horror.

How does Jason get so hugelarge and get a machete? No idea. How does he get to space? Doesn't matter. Have I seen any of the other sequels between the original and Jason X? Not clear-headed, though I do vaguely I think remember watching one when I had the flu real bad and fell asleep a bunch of times.

Basic plot, for context: a professor leads a bunch of students to excavate the cryogenically frozen body of Jason and realises that, because he's so big and unkillable, he could definitely sell Jason's body for lots of money and fame to people looking to profit off of eternal youth. Jason awakens, mayhem ensues.

As I remember it, the first sex scene that immediately comes to mind involves a sadomasochistic encounter between a student and a supervisor, heavy overtones of "fuck me for good grades and fame and success". The wiki page doesnt specify this so i MIGHT be getting it confused with another film but it is definitely something I remember noting about it so for the sake of this discussion I'm going to assume I've got that right. Obviously, then, this links to the core theme of "Having sex with people as a distraction from the duty of care you have over people". While these characters are fucking, Jason is waking up, only attended by the students, and beginning his murder day out in space. Again, these deaths could have been prevented if there was a separation kept between Doing Your Job and Getting Some Pussy, and the dynamics of the scene lean into ideas of sex as power and of appropriate vs inappropriate sexual acts. I also seem to remember the younger girl being the dominant participant in the scene which again comes down to some kind of "horror movie punishing Deviant tm sex Specifically" trope, horror as a genre is really preoccupied with presentations and performances of masculine and feminine, male and female, active and passive, and things which blur these distinctions or confuse these binaries are a major focus and source of fascination but are also almost always resolved by either "Correcting" the gender (girl stops being an adolescent tomboy and gets a boyfriend) or destroying it (if you do things "wrong" you die). This is very much a basic summary I recommend Clover's "Her body, himself" for it explained better than I can on a bus with no coffee.

Another heavily sexual scene in the movie is when they try to capture/subdue Jason by putting him in the holodeck and playing a simulation of two hot half-naked young women at summer camp, which distracts him in a paralysis between violence and desire. This echoes the themes of the first film; first, that sexuality is very often a dominant preoccupation for adolescents and young adults and the question of whether it is appropriate to condemn them for having or desiring sex; secondly, that the tension between condemnation and desire can cause impulses to violence, like the far-right leanings in incel groups; thirdly, the cycles of repeating trauma, Jason here wanting the thing that killed him showing that, like his mother, he is playing out the cycles of trauma again. This is all a very psychoanalytic reading which is not at all my usual thing for good movies (read Skin Shows by Halberstam for, again, a much more competent analysis of why psychoanalysis is often reductive when applied to horror) but I think Jason X does lend itself to this lens and, again, busposting from memory not a fully researched essay. Jason then kills them by putting them in sleeping bags and hitting one sleeping bag with another which is on the one hand a reference to the "young women pillow fighting" sexual titillation motif but is, more importantly, absurdly funny to watch.

Like I've said throughout this, it's been almost a year and a half since I watched this film, but I absolutely do think the themes of sexuality are a significant enough part of it to not be dismissed offhand!

Salutations random people on the internet who are already scrolling past this! I am an Ordinary Schmuck! I write stories and reviews and draw comics and cartoons!

Now that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has closed out Phase Four, I figured it's time to finally do something I haven't done yet: Discuss the movies in Phase Four. I shared my thoughts on the shows, reviewing them each week quickly but methodically. As for the films, I wanted to talk about them...but never got around to it.

You call it laziness. I call it an unsurety of how to tackle reviewing these movies.

But now, I've decided just how to do it: Share some quick thoughts on how I feel about each film! And before you say anything, this isn't a ranking. I'm going in order from Black Widow to Wakanda Forever, waiting for another day to rank all of Phase Four from worst to best (maybe after my Pixar worst-to-best ranking). And another thing of note? There are only three movies where I've seen it more than once. The rest are based on initial thoughts I vaguely remember from my first viewing. This means that you should take what I say here with a grain of salt, as, odds are, the feelings I have towards these movies will change in the future if and when I rewatch them.

With that said, here are some quick-ish thoughts on the movies of Phase Four:

Black Widow-I forgot I saw Black Widow the day I watched it...That alone should tell you how I feel about it. But for those in the back, this movie is pretty dull. I do like some things. For instance, the family is a ton of fun (even though I'm hearing Spy X Family does the idea better). They have great chemistry with Natasha and each other, and Yelena steals the show as a little sister type of character who can just so happen to snap your neck with very little ease. I particularly love her dynamic with Natasha, with Yelena thinking like an assassin in dealing with a threat and Natasha thinking like an Avenger in not wanting to hurt anybody in the crossfire. It's a lot of fun to watch, and not enough people talk about it.

As for Taskmaster...I heard people hate how they're treated, but I don't know. I wasn't too bothered by them. It works within the story's context, and Taskmaster is pretty cool with their design and fighting style. It's fun watching them fight and picking up which Avenger they pick their moves from. That's what we call "visual storytelling." And if you hate this one version of the character that doesn't erase the other's existence, at least this Taskmaster still has the most essential feature of a superhero or villain: The powers. You can change whatever you want, but the superpowers are what we remember these characters by. Case in point: Why do you think people got upset about Ms. Marvel's powers changing in her TV show?

But that's just the stuff that makes Black Widow semi-enjoyable. What makes it dull? Well, the action is hit-or-miss, and too much of the story is about Natasha reluctantly organizing a family reunion than actually fighting the bad guy. And it's worth it with her family being so much fun, as I've said, but they might be too much fun because the most uninteresting character in Black Widow might be Black Widow. She's still entertaining...sometimes. The problem is that if this is meant to be a proper send-off to her character, the movie fails in that regard if I'm left wanting to see more of her sister than of her. I mean, I guess it's kind of a win with Yelena being a possible new Black Widow, but again, this movie shouldn't be about her. It should be the character that dozens loved to the point where they've been begging for a Black Widow since Iron Man 2. And they got it...but I think it's safe to say it's not what people have been hoping for.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings-Quite possibly the most coherent movie of all of Phase Four. I'll leave it to you to decide if that's a good thing...Wait, no, screw that. This movie's amazing!

I honestly don't get why people overlook this one. Sure, the third act blows, some jokes miss more than they hit, and there are some leaps of logic regarding a character despite them being a pretty hilarious callback. With that said, despite its problems, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is still one of the best films of Phase Four. It might be pushing it to say it's one of the best of the MCU as a whole, but it's still pretty great, in my opinion. Shang-Chi is a decent lead who has potential as a new face in this universe. His platonic friendship with Katy is cute, and I'm glad they're pushing this more as a friendship, as you don't really get many platonic relationships between men and women in stories. Xu Wenwu is a great villain with an understandable motive that also makes up for Marvel's mishandling of the Mandarin in Iron Man 3. And the action is downright amazing, having some of the most intense and fast-paced fighting in all of the MCU. That last part is also why the third act falls short, as it's another CGI battle when a personal, hand-to-hand combat between actual humans would have been more effective. Still, there's nothing that bad that ruins this movie for me. It's preferable if a story sticks the landing, but if I still had fun most of the time before things went south, I'd still say that's a win.

Eternals-Hey, look! It's the actual worst movie of Phase Four.

Ok...I want to like Eternals. Because, despite the problems, there are some cases where I could see how this could be something phenomenal. Eternals presents a lot of intriguing ideas, a lot of them based on control. Primarily with this question: Should deities, with the powers to do so many things, be allowed to change humanity, even if it would save their lives? That's a question that gets brought up a lot throughout this movie, and it honestly left me thinking about it a little bit. And while the CGI is...not great, Eternals makes up for it with Arishem. You can FEEL the size of this character, and it's just as breathtaking whether it's on the big screen or on your laptop. Trust me, I know.

But those are the only positives, and the negatives highly outweigh them. For instance, this is too big of a story that's shoved into too small of a movie. Two hours and thirty-seven minutes is not enough time to do everything that Eternals sets out to accomplish. You feel that the most when it comes to the characters, as most of them and their relationships feel underdeveloped by the movie's end. When some characters...leave, you don't feel the impact because you barely got to know them. And when characters reunite, it's just as empty because there's hardly an idea of how close they were. To help fill in the gaps, Eternals is forced to cut away from the main story and deliver flashbacks. This sounds like it helps, but it either doesn't provide enough information or provides information that comes much too late. As is, it feels like a movie that should have been split into two, showing us the history the Eternals lived through and their growing bond over generations with one movie and then showing them save the world in the second. I mean, with the quantity over quality motto that Marvel is going through as of late, you'd think they'd be ok showing two movies, one after the other, to make more money. Because while there are small moments that make Eternals worth a watch, this is evidently a film that had the message and ideas first and considered the plot and characters second. Trust me when I say that many people will say that's a poor move for screenwriting.

Spider-Man: No Way Home-Here it is! My favorite movie of Phase Four.

Is it nothing more than fan-pandering for two-in-a-half hours? Yes. Absolutely. But that's not a problem because Spider-Man: No Way Home is fan-pandering done correctly. And for two reasons.

Reason Number One: It's evident that this movie is about honoring the legacy of Spider-Man through his history of films. It brings together the previous two live-action adaptations in a story that's pretty similar to the actual best Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, in a way that it has to be a homage.

"It's not a homage."

Well, screw you. I'm saying it's a homage anyway. Because of... the death of the author...and all that other...junk...

...Reason #2!

Despite the fan-pandering, Spider-Man: No Way Home still utilizes it to tell a good story that develops the MCU's Peter Parker. Yeah, it's him fighting other Spider-Mans' (Spider-Men?) versions of his iconic villains, but those same villains present conflict and changes that are key to this Peter Parker. He's never faced anyone who's gone crazy because of science. Just men who went too far with their greed. Y'know. Like actual Spider-Man villains from the comics.

Having him deal with people who clearly need help, both from their physical and mental anguish, forces Peter to be the most empathetic he's ever been, despite it leading to some of the most painful and worst luck he's ever experienced. Then when he meets other characters (you know who), ones who share that pain and the burden Peter faces, they help him through it and steer him away from a darker path. And on top of that, the movie also develops those characters' stories and provides some quality writing through bad decisions made in worse movies. All of this through a film that's non-stop pandering for two-in-a-half hours.

Is it perfect? Hell no. You can nitpick the story to shreds, and the CGI is pretty hit or miss most of the time. Mostly miss. But, also...f**king--When has an MCU movie ever been perfect?! Don't bring up that one example! You know it's not true!

But even though Spider-Man: No Way Home isn't perfect, it's still a ton of fun and brings out some of the best moments in Spider-Man's movie history. It makes me feel like I can't really complain about the issues when I'm satisfied with the results. And not only is that what makes it my favorite Phase Four movie, but possibly the best live-action Spider-Man movie.

(Note that I said live-action. Spiderverse is still the best. Without a doubt)

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness-To address the elephant in the room, I will concede in saying Everything Everywhere All At Once is a better multiverse movie than Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Granted, I haven't seen it because I save my money for Marvel movies like a dumbass, but I will concede based on everything I've heard from fans who loved it. With that said, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is still fun.

It has its fair complaints, don't get me wrong. Ms. America is basically an over-glorified plot device than an actual character, and how she masters her powers is not earned in the slightest. And the villain...Ok, while it's fun to see what's basically a horror movie monster with superpowers act as the movie's main villain, it could have been integrated a lot better. Or maybe not? I don't know. I've been thinking a lot about them and how maybe they're not as awfully written as people think, but that's too long of a conversation for this, so I'll save it for another time. I'll only say I get it when people find it hard to believe how far this villain has fallen, for now.

As for what I love, there are two big things about Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness that makes this an enjoyable time. First of all, there's Doctor Strange himself. People say that the writers sacrificed his character development so Ms. America could be more impressive, and that's...not true. It couldn't be farther from the truth. This movie is about him understanding to not take control of every little situation or making the monumental sacrifice and instead having him learn to have faith in others, not just himself. And he realizes this by seeing how other versions of himself either died or became corrupted due to this arrogance of thinking he can fix everything when that only caused more damage. It's genuinely great stuff, and I honestly don't understand where people are coming from when complaining about how he doesn't develop.

Another thing that makes this movie fun is Sam Raimi. His fingerprints aren't on every scene, but when they allow him to go ham, it is a blast to see. He even tries his best to make this a Marvel horror movie, and while it doesn't work most of the time, there are some semi-spooky stuff and some pretty brutal kills by Marvel's standards. Seriously, I thought Kingpin smashing a guy's head in with a car door was the most gruesome thing to happen in the MCU. Here? Well, let's say it's mindblowing.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness could have been a better movie. I will admit to that. But if I came out of the theater feeling like I had a great time watching it and still enjoy it on future rewatches, I don't think that automatically makes it bad. Maybe it's a guilty pleasure or not as awful as some people will claim it is. Either way, I still had fun.

Thor: Love and Thunder-...I mean...I thought it was funny.

Yeah, the reaction you have toward this movie is whether or not you think it's funny. I came to that conclusion when it came to the film's final battle, thinking that if a person doesn't find the absurdity of what's happening now funny, this movie isn't for them.

"Comedy's fine if it doesn't ruin the moment!"

Now, that's a fair complaint. There were moments when I felt like the jokes overstayed their welcome, and it would have been better if Thor: Love and Thunder took itself just a bit more seriously. That might be a problem with Taika Waititi's style because while I loved Thor: Ragnorok as much as the next Marvel nerd, even there, I felt like it could have taken the destruction of Asgard with a bit more groundedness and a little less humor during certain scenes. Here, it's elevated to the nth degree, and I can see why that can bother some people. Now, it wouldn't spoil every moment. Thor making light of how he broke a vending machine is clear that he's trying to make a situation a lot less dreadful. That's a scene where the humor still works, even if it is meant to be taken seriously. However, it doesn't change how the tone can be inconsistent regarding the villain.

Despite how many people say otherwise, Gorr is a great villain. I'll admit he's underutilized, but to say Gorr's awful because of how drastically different he is from the original character in the comics is wrong to me. Gorr's motivation is beyond understandable, and he's genuinely spine-chilling at times. He's easily one of Marvel's darkest villains, but that adds to the problem with the humor. To have such a dark villain be wasted on such a goofy comedy is...frustrating. The tone doesn't match the villain, and it causes the whole thing to feel like a mess.

But, like...I still find it funny.

Yeah, this one's more of a guilty pleasure for me. I think it's funny, and I love the villain, but I don't blame people for hating this one. If they want Thor to be more serious than goofy next time, I won't blame them.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever-SPOILER-FREE REVIEW! Let me specify that again: This is a SPOILER-FREE REVIEW fresh off my first viewing of the movie. And what a f**king emotional powerhouse!

This is the first movie of Phase Four where it felt like I was being treated as an adult. There are still the same old goofy jokes, but they're nowhere near as frequent as past movies and never felt like it ruins the moment. This was the first time in a while that the central hook of the film was its drama, and it worked every minute, keeping me engaged from beginning to end. It also works well with Shuri. You can feel that she's not herself anymore thanks to T'Challa's death, which is present throughout most of the movie. And it makes a decent connection between her and another character, who I will not name for the sake of spoilers.

Speaking of the characters, everyone is in top form...Except for maybe Ironheart. She's kind of annoying at times. But Namor? Sweet, Mother of Neptune, NAMOR! They did a great job making him his own intriguing character while still honoring his roots in the comics. They don't even make fun of his winged feet! That absurdity was served to them on a silver platter, and no one took it! And it's a good thing, too, because he's easily the best character in the movie for being written well while never taking too much away from the high emotions of Shuri and the satisfying build-up of the new Black Panther. Go watch it if you haven't already. Trust me, it's easily the best movie of Phase Four.

And I'm glad Phase Four went out on a high note. There were a lot of fun moments, but the highs weren't as frequent as the lows this time around. I'm confident things will get better, as Phase Five already promises a cool movie with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and an eighten episode long season of Daredevil: Born Again. I'm already looking forward to what comes next, even if a lot of people are falling out of love with the MCU.

To this day, i can't figure out if the movies everyone looses their minds over, but i didn't like as much, were actually bad to me, or if it was just my bad mood at the time.

I went to the theaters, expecting a movie to help cheer me out of a bad mood. But it didn't really work. Maybe i was wrong to expect a movie to be able to do that.

Captain America: the First Avenger

I rewatched Tangled and it's nice and fun. But i still dont worship it, the way everyone else seems to. I'm just left feeling lost in not understanding everyone else's deep, reverent love for it.

Same with Captain America for me. Though, that cheesey tone they were purposely going for? Still not my thing. It looses points with me, compared to most other MCU movies.

But Weck It Ralph? All i can think about is how much i hate that annoying little girl, and how i wished Ralph had treated her like original FF7 Cloud had reacted to meeting Yuffie. In my distorted memories, Cloud didn't bother dignifying her with responses, walked away, she yelled some more to get a reaction out of him, he stopped, turned around, still said nothing, then walked away again, while she ran after him, her still yelling. But Ralph kept humoring her, and i hate it. You can stll help someone, without letting them lead you by the nose or hanging out with them. Every moment she's on screen was annoying. It's really unfortunate for me that the emotional core of the movie majorly hinges on caring about her and Ralph's bond with her. A lot of times, i forget Wreck It Ralph was a Disney movie. In short, i wished Ralph just deadpanned at her the way Ballister sometimes did with Nimona.

And while we're at it, the crammed team intro in Big Hero 6 just made them feel annoying to me too. Then again, i have this mostly inexplicable aversion to consuming media that other people TELL me to or force me to. And my sister made me watch that movie. Maybe it's similar to the feeling of adding to my backlog, or like how high school novel reading assignments intruded into my mental safe space, or the stress of trying something new and unknown when i just needed my comfort shows, or maybe i still have that early 2000s reaction ingrained from my youth back when anime first started to become popular in America so a bunch of shows thought they could piggyback off it, try to rip off its style or do tokenistic Asian motifs, and you never knew when the results would be cringey, try-hard, superfical understandings of what made anime great, or actually be good, but still stressed me the entire time, bracing myself for if it might prove to be the former, or sometimes worse, just straight up making fun of anime for being different.

E17: The Man Who Stole Tomorrow

Okay! We're here! I started this rewatch because I wanted to talk about Kang and Janet Van Dyne a lot before Quantumania. I have seen that by now, and also 17 episodes of this show.

You might not remember that when Captain America was introduced in the mini-episodes, Kang was as well. Kang believes Captain America is the cause of some kind of time anomaly and he comes to EMHU Earth to kill him in this two-part episode.

(It's also implied, later on, that the thing Captain America does that causes a time... problem? Time issue? I don't know the term, happens later on this season. When Captain America touches the Cosmic Cube (aka the Tesseract in MCU speak), it is supposed to grant someone their wished for world. Baron Strucker wants to remake the world so that Hydra won WW2, but Steve gets to it first. But the world doesn't change much when Steve touches it. It just makes it so Bucky survives in the past. And, honestly, Steve should have been more specific with his wish because Bucky simply surviving means he is tortured as the Winter Soldier. I suggest you think a lot harder if you ever get the chance to touch the Cosmic Cube, reader.)

Spoilers for later this season and next! But Kang is trying to stop Steve from destroying the future.

It's interesting because some have argued that, in the MCU, Steve Rogers going back in time to live with Peggy Carter should create a branch timeline but the writers and directors of ENDGAME don't agree as to what happened. With the TVA added to the mix, Steve's happy ending should have just been pruned immediately as soon as he arrived. Yet somehow he seems to have grown old in the past.

I don't understand any of that, and unless Chris Evans agrees to come back, I don't think Steve Rogers will be the cause of the multiversal war that has been predicted for the MCU. But he still could be, I guess.

This Kang is more, well, cartoon-y than MCU Kang. He is voiced by actor Jonathan Adams, who is also a Black man but otherwise not that similar to Jonathan Majors.

This Kang is motivated by love. We know this because he's always staring longingly at a woman in stasis--Ravonna Renslayer (though we are not to that part of the story yet). He also just shows up at the Avengers Mansion and is like, "Hi, I'm Kang. I am here to kill Captain America." There's no elaborate plan or organization, like we see from He Who Remains in Loki.

He brings the Avengers (whole team this time!) into the future to see NYC after the sun has burned up the planet, which is somehow Cap's fault according to Kang. Also, "BTW," Kang says, "I'm going to conqueror your world so you can survive the coming Kree-Skrull war." Because Kang's solution to every problem is him being in charge.

There is a moment where Steve is like "okay maybe I should let Kang take me? Because of the whole Earth burning up thing?" And Tony's like, "nah, this guy is a jerk." (Literally he says Kang might be their "only hope" but "he's being a real jerk about it.")

So the Avengers fight, even though no one has any idea what is going on.

Kang is like, "Gross, I'm just going to leave you here in this destroyed Earth to think about your decision."

Except Ant-Man calls a bunch of ants to cover Kang and knock him out of his time-chair. All of humanity died, but there are still insects on this planet. This scene is fairly similar to the one we saw in Quantumania where Hank arrives with a slew of ants that drag Kang away. Except this time it also involves Hulk smashing as well. (Giant Man smashed in the movie?)

This gives Tony time to "hack" Kang's time chair. (I should mention Black Panther is able to cut Kang's armor with his vibranium knives.) Tony recognizes some Stark Tech in the origins of the chair, and is able to bring them all back to the Mansion.

Kang is very upset that Iron Man is sitting in his chair. (It sounds like he has a pretty personal and intimate relationship with this chair.) Tony zaps him. Then Thor hits him with a lightning bolt and Kang retreats to his big space ship and brings more spaceships from the future to "conquer" the 21st century.

Steve is like, "he'll be back."

And in more ominous news: Hank has a whole bunch of Ultrons in the Negative Zone at a "new" prison. I'm sure that will go super duper for everyone.

Marvel Rewatch Thread

Haven't seen most of the Marvel movies since they came out but I have a sudden urge to rewatch them like a TV show, with Endgame as the season finale. And to tweet about it. (Feel free to mute this thread if you're only here for the art.)

Iron Man still fucking rules. It has so much of what I like to call buzz porn. I will never get tired of the suiting up sequences.

Evil Jeff Bridges with a cigar on a Segway. A king.

We've all gotten used to it by now but the way they show Tony's face in the 3D-void with the digital interface over it is actually pretty ingenious.

Speaking of Tony, RDJ may always play himself, but the man oozes charisma from the points of his funky goatee to the bell bottoms of his suit pants.

And Jarvis too! I've never not loved a Paul Bettany performance. I predict I may say this several more times, but the casting carried this franchise from the start.

That final battle is like, what if Transformers but good?

Ah, the famously maligned Iron Man 2. It's true, it's not as good as the first but nevertheless, the War Machine suit FUCKS. (And so does the song).

I like Whiplash, it's Hammer that's the problem. Everyone, but especially he talks so much that the quippy bickering that is 90% of the dialogue stops being amusing like it was in 1 and becomes draggy.

Also, the narrative structure is much less clean. Iron Man 1's plot is a tight piece of ass, where 2 needs to do some more squats.

The Incredible Hulk certainly is an odd little duckling in the lineup. Its connection to the rest of the MCU is so tenuous as to almost not be felt at all, especially with Norton's recasting. It's also the only one without a post-credits stinger.

I will say I like Norton!Banner, but there is something off about this Hulk's face. Maybe the technology just wasn't quite there yet in 2008.

Certainly appropriately green color palette throughout though. I'm also noticing a certain grimy, tactile nature to these early entries that's gradually lost as more and more of the sets and even costumes get replaced by pure CGI. Some jumpy editing here and there too.

Again, the casting in these movies is stellar across the board but man, Chris Evans is such a perfect Captain America in every way. Certainly the best bod in the biz, come at me, rival Chris stans.

That replacement effect they did with pre-serum Steve's body is surprisingly good, especially remembering much more recent travesties like the Super-stache.

The first Cap suit is still lowkey my favorite one. That functional military aesthetic is just my vibe.

Thor is better than I remember. Everyone, but especially Jane is super likeable actually. Also, I would trust Heimdall with my life savings, my first born, my soul and my browser history.

Besides Tony, Loki arguably carried this franchise more than any other character and he proves yet again that family makes the best villains.

The Avengers takes me back. It might be old news now, but this is the movie that invented the concept of the "cinematic universe". Like, that wasn't a word before. It was thrilling.

I remember when I got into Marvel after the first Iron Man came out, reading rumors about a potential Avengers movie and thinking that it was never going to happen. It would be too big, too expensive, too much to set up, just unfeasable on every level. And then it... happened.

That first arc of the MCU might have also been the best execution of a cinematic universe to date, bc it was at that point still Tony's story at its core and his arc finishes here. But we'll see as we go along.

Thor 2 is the first of these that really feels like it only exists to be part of the larger franchise. That is not a good thing. It's what sank the DCU before it even left the shallows.

There's a very noticeable lack of verve compared to the first one, the cinematography and editing is so unexciting, the plot so basic. I mean they whipped out the ol' "when the planets align" chestnut. The only fun idea is the wacky gravity but they don't do enough with it.

Jane, despite being more directly involved in the conflict feels much less like an active agent than the first one and what did they do to rapier-man's hair?

I don't mean to pretend like these movies are high art or anything but this is well below the standards set, like b-tier fantasy at best.

I have to admit IM3 is better the second time around. The big twist obviously loses its impact but there's some good moments and it's thematically more coherent than I originally gave it credit for.

Having said that, that theme and its resolution requires that this be the end of Iron Man as a character, which it obviously won't be. It's sort of the opposite problem from the last one: Where Thor2 can't exist outside the MCU, IM3 can't exist within it.

What made me absolutely livid when I first saw this movie is that Tony gets the reactor removed. It still doesn't sit right with me, though the reasons have shifted. Then, it was bc Tony and the suit are a unit, if it's not part of him he becomes exactly what cap says he is in A1

Now, contrary to what IM3 posits, the reactor to me symbolizes accepting the wounds of the past as a permanent part of yourself and growing from them, which breaks down as a metaphor if Tony could always get rid of the shrapnel and just didn't, for some reason.

Also, the mark 42 is still fugly.

CA: winter soldier has some really good hand-to-hand combat and I really like the bromance with Natasha. They make a good team. Same goes for Wilson.

Because the themes of mass surveillance and corruption are more relevant than ever I'm not a huge fan of the conspiratorial bent this movie takes. It's a bit too real a subject to go full wacky Hydra long-con, you know.

Guardians 1 does a remarkable job being good, considering all the new stuff it has to fit in. I'm not particularly attached to any of the characters but yeah, it works, it's just a solid flick all around.

Guardians 2's opening slaps. Also, de-aged Kurt Russell looks surprisingly convincing.

It's the sequel that's just better in every way. G1 laid a solid foundation that this one builds on a lot. It really digs into the characters' hearts (and makes me mix my metaphors apparently). They even manage to make the goofy tone thematic in that it's Peter's coping mechanism

Ego is the rare antagonist who isn't a foil but a natural evolution of the protagonist. Definitely in the upper echelons of Marvel villains.

I really like the ship with the little movable laser balls. Creative.

Avengers 2 time! Vision: Awesome! Hulkbuster: Awesome! That shot of Cap ripping a log in two: Awesome! Natasha calling herself a monster bc she can't have children... a choice.

I'm glad they acknowledge from the start how OP Wanda is. I'm less glad her powers are basically reduced to telekinesis when they're so much funkier than that.

Why did they give Ultron so much... face? Especially combined with Spader's expressive performance it would have been much more unsettling to have a motionless mask.

This movie really takes IM3 from a mixed bag to utterly pointless.

It could be on my end but the audio mixing is off. Some of the sfx are weirdly quiet in places.

Although I do remain a touch salty that they didn't go with original ant-man/yellowjacket, especially since they already transplanted the Ultron storyline to Tony. I would have liked to have seen mad scientist Pym and his merry circus of fucked up alter-egos.

Movie civil war is better than comic book civil war bc it ties into the characters way more and bc the inciting incident actually directly involves an avenger, and one who is famously volatile to boot. Still perhaps a touch contrived though.

Black Panther!!! The only hero who may out-cool Tony. RIP, king.

Why are the police in Bucharest speaking German? That really threw me, to the point I was unsure where that part was taking place. Pretty serious oversight honestly.

And why did steve kiss this random side character who doesn't matter? In a movie as long as this you can't really afford to keep dead end plot lines like that around.

Listen, Toby Maguire will always have a special place in my heart, but Holland is the best package as far as spider-men go. Even though obviously no-one here looks their age I do buy Holland as conceptual teenager. Like, the energy is correct, in a way it never was before.

I really enjoy dad!Tony's ineptitude too. There was a touch of that IM3 (keep coming back to that one, huh) but it works better here.

Did they cast Michael Keaton as the Vulture bc of Birdman? I'm gonna choose to believe they did.

If I may nitpick for a second here: The new Avengers HQ was introduced after Ultron, two years before Homecoming takes place, so why would they just now have a "moving day"?

Do I have lingering trauma from being on tumblr in the years 2012-17? Yes. But I still have to admit Cumberbatch is a decent actor. My favorite thing about his casting is that there's probs no one else whose name is as evenly matched in joke potential to their character as him.

The trippy shit is great. Like Inception on LSD. Just fun to watch even if, like me, you're not super invested in the story.

I guess it only makes sense that the most unique, mould-breaking, complete stories have the most trouble fitting into such a behemoth of a franchise. Ragnarok might be the best MCU movie outside of the context of the MCU.

When Thor lands on the rainbow bridge all electrified, a lightning arch connects between his eye and his chest circle thingy and I love that particular frame so much.

I don't like the ghost's acting. Nothing wrong with the character, but her body language is stiff and awkward. Now scott's daughter, there's a real mvp.

Watching the first after credits stinger before having seen infinity war makes it super ominous actually.

Captain Marvel aka I'm gaaaaaay, the movie. And not just me. Carol and Maria will get married eventually and finish raising their daughter together, you cannot convince me otherwise.

Aww, I forgot about the Stanley montage. That's sweet.

I do love the mohawk.

Larson leans into the cocky badass persona a bit too far but what I like about Carol is how much joy she finds in her powers. Like so many heroes they get foisted on her but she doesn't get caught up in any "but what if I'm a monster" or "I didn't ask for this" angst.

She discovers she can fly and is like "fuck yeah I can fly! Watch me gooooo!" You know, the correct response. One of my favorite moments in the movie is when she starfishes straight through a spaceship just for shits and giggles.

The remarkable thing about Infinity War is that while not everyone gets an arc, everyoen at least gets a beat or two and it all makes sense and hits. That's the pinnacle of what can be achieved with a well-designed cinematic universe.

The only thing that feels a touch underdeveloped is Wanda and Vision's relationship. It's a shame bc Wandavision is such a good ship with so much history. At least they have a TV show now. Also, I notice Wanda lost her accent.

Do Strange and Tony have... chemistry? Not to get all shippy for the finale but like, I might have to check AO3 and see if there's anything good.

Is Infinity War/Endgame the best two parter finale? A case might be made, I think.

This movie really makes me cognizant of how well structured the power escalation in this franchise is (leaving aside the fact that the sorcers are supremely OP).

Time travel and universe rearrangement is game-breaking and about as far as you can reasonably go in scale. The stakes just lose touch with what's humanly imaginable/ empathizable after that, which is why it's good that they saved it for the very end.

Endgame has a touch of the ol' "too many endings" disease but I'd say it's earned them at this point.

Wrap up time! First, the perhaps obvious: there's a difference between watching 22 movies and 22 TV eps. They flow different and the movie marathon does get exhausting in a way the equivalent of ~2 TV seasons wouldn't have done.

They are, for the most part, fun flicks in their own right but I'm left wondering if the individual heroes wouldn't have been better served in a semi-canon CU, where weirder titles like Dr. Strange and Ant-Man would have had more freedom to experiment.

Then again, the existence of the MCU doesn't preclude future iterations that do push the envelope a little more. In fact, Wandavision, the only one of the TV shows I've cared to watch, does go in that direction, to the point that it ends up straining against its MCU obligations.

Anyway, I'm not gonna do a ranking of the movies. Instead I'm gonna do sth much more fun and at least 5% less overdone and rank each movie's main villain! It's possible they might correlate more strongly with overall enjoyment than the heroes even. Let's see here:

Blog #3 - MCU

Welcome back to the blog where we discuss it all relating to movies and T.V. This week I want to discuss a very popular movie series or in this case it may be more appropriate to say universe. That’s right this week I want to discuss the past, present, and future of the MCU aka Marvel Cinematic Universe. Before I start, I thought we could switch it up a little and make this more interactive. Below is a quiz to tell you which MCU character you are internally and externally.

I have taken the quiz myself and I was surprised to learn that on the inside I’m like Captain America and on the outside, I’m like Ant-Man. I was a little confused at first but after reading the explanation I can see the similarities. Who did you get? Was it who you expected or totally off?

Coming back to the topic of today I’ll first be discussing the MCU phase 1-3. In my opinion and I might be a little biased these phases are probably one of the best cinematic masterpieces of my generation. In case you have forgotten what movies were in these phases here is a picture as a reference.

The reason why I think these movies were so amazing is for several reasons. One of the main reasons is because of the writing and directing. I never realized how great the writing and directing were until I watched other movies or *cough* *cough* stage 4 of the MCU. In phase 1 were introduced to the main MCU characters like Iron man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America. We also get to see our heroes fight together for the first time in the Avengers movie. Later in phases 2 and 3, we get to see more secondary characters and heroes introduced. Another main reason why I liked phases 1-3 so much is how refreshing it was to me. When the MCU introduced Iron man first I felt like that was a statement. They could have gone in chronological order and chosen Captain America who is the most like Superman. A superhero who is just, righteous, and courageous. But instead, they choose a character who is riddled with personality problems that would make him an unfit hero. My next reason is the movies were funny, genuinely funny. Which is something I feel is either not shown in superhero movies or not done right. My final reason (at least for today) is the details. I love that saying it’s all in the details. I feel like the MCU understood that perfectly. Accompanied by a great plot, writing, and directing it just took the films to a whole new level.

The next phase I want to discuss is phase 4 the current stage we are in.

While the dates for some of these are off due to the pandemic, we are currently in phase 4. If I am honest and I always try to be I currently have a very strong dislike for phase 4. Now I don’t dislike all of it just certain aspects of it. For example, I really enjoyed Wanda Vision, Falcon, and the Winter Soldier, What If, Doctor Strange 2, and Spiderman 3. The rest of the movies and shows were a bit of a letdown for me. In my opinion, the biggest disappointment was Loki and Black Widow. I felt like these characters had a dark past that was never talked about in the movies. Furthermore, both had complex personalities. Considering both are no longer “alive” it would have been a great opportunity to explore their origin stories. In addition, most of the shows/movies felt cheesy in the writing and directing. The saddest part is you can see the difference in the writing and directing from the last phase to this one. A funny joke I saw on Instagram was comparing the writing in the past vs the present. For example, in infinity war (phase 1) Thor says bring me Thanos. While in Love and Thunder Lady Thor said eat my hammer. Rewatching both scenes just doesn’t give the same effect. On top of that, the plot didn’t always make sense to me. I’m often left feeling confused rather than excited at the end of a movie/show.

The final stage I will be discussing is stage 5 and 6.

After watching most of the content in phase 4 I strongly considered being done with the MCU. Stage 5 didn’t give me much hope that it was going to get better. The only movie I would be interested in watching is Guardians of the Galaxy. But even then, I’m unsure how interesting it will be missing one of the main characters, Gamora. However, just when I’m about to write off the MCU they release phase 6 and I see they added 2 Avengers movies. This is big news for any marvel fan because the last Avengers movie was in 2019 . Futhermore with a lot of the original crew dead, it seemed unlikely that there would be a new Avengers movie. I don't know what to expect but this gives me hope for the future of the MCU and I can't help but be excited once again.

Spider-Man Homecoming Liveblog

I remember being so Hype for Spider-Man in Civil War, and getting his own MCU movie. I was there weekend one. I adored this movie. People argue what MCU movies hold up and what don’t, so I really hope this one does. I don’t rewatch movies much anymore, but this one has been an exception multiple times

Spider-Man’s Leitmotief in the MCU is really underrated

I love this take on the Vulture. The idea of him being a scavenger is fantastic.

The idea of cleaning up after colleteral damage is a fun one. I like how how Tooms is established as an adapter really early on

The Department of Damage Control. The most overlooked MCU villians.

In a couple Spider-Man cartoons, the billionare who screwed over the Vulture was Norman Osborn to simplify and connect the series lore. This time, it’s Tony Stark. Honestly, I think both approchs are valid.

Ah, Tony. The cause of, and solution to, many, many of the MCU’s probelms

“The World’s Changing. It’s Time We Change Too.” Love when that Superhero troupe is shown instead of told.

I apparicate how wepony is the illegal buisness instead of, say, durgs. It allows the Vulture to be the right mix of symathic, but also someone you want to see stopped

I apperciate the Civil War recap. It’s a Captain America movie, so I didn’t feel the need to include it in my rewatch. I will admit that Spider-Man’s role in that movie made no sence. I still love his parts though

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is a wide eyed young man, excited to join the world of heros he’s looked up to for so long. He’s really endearing.

Tony giving Peter the Hollywood level suit is a good explaimation of the upgrade

I’m a big fan of Tony and Peter’s relationship. It’s really common for Peter to go from one father figure to the next. And this version of Iron Man is someone who’s made some horrible mistakes, and is always trying to atone for them. He has a guilt complex, and feels like he has to be the one to fix everything. He’s actually a lot like Spider-Man, so I think the connection makes even more sense

After the caziness of the Civil War, Peter’s back to his classic Spider-Man life. 

I love how high school is protrayed in this movie. It’s so down to earth and relatable, somthing the other movies didn’t really capture. I love that the kids look like kids, and how realisitcly diversethe side cast is.

Ned’s a fun best friend character. Turns out, Peter and Ned were friends in the comics, but then some higher ups made him the Hobgoblin for no reason.

I’m not sure if Cartoony jerk jock bullies exist anymore, so I apperaciate Flash being updated to be just some jerk. That’s the sort of bullies I had in middle and high school.

The more technological side of the Spider-Man costume. it makes sense in universe. Does it betray the small time nature of Spider-Man? maybe. But I love how it’s used in some MCU moments, and espcailly in the PS4 game.

I love this montage. It’s a great showcase of Peter’s life as a friendly neighbood Spider-man, and it’s a funny look at how not a lot of crime and disasters. But there’s still people that need help, and Spidy is here to help them

“Do a flip” That line lives rent free in my head

Stan Lee cameo. It’s a funny one

Peter wants to deal with some Avengers level threats. It’s classic teenage ambition. 

Alwyas love seeing Peter have his mask open a bit to eat. It think this is the first movie to do that.

It’s a shame “You Guys aren’t the real really Avengers? Hulk gives it away.” isn’t in the final cut

The stakes are rised, and we see just how dangarous having such powerful wepons in the street is. If only America would learn that lesson

I do like the young Aunt May, and how her and Peters treat eachother more like equals. It’s not traditional, but it’s a fun change of pace.

I love how Ned finds out Peter is Spider-Man. I like how the later two movie series give Peter a confidant.

I like how Ned gives the audience the brief recap of the origin for the two people who don’t already know

Uncle Ben’s death is alluded to, but never outright stated. I don’t mind it. We were going though Uncle Ben fatigue at the time, after all.

I appericate the origin being skipped in general. We know the story, why tell it again? A new Spider-Man means a chance to tell new stories

Even if they’re more like equals, May’s still a great mother figure when Peter needs it

People being in love with Aunt May is an odd running gag

I like how the characters talk about just how close the Sandwich shop that got destroyed was. It helps keep the movie grounded.

Love the Captain America PSA. And the Gym teacher plugging the plot hole that he’s technically a war crimal

It’s fun to see how the average people see the Avengers

Peter’s been Spider-Man for a while, but this is his first supervillain. In a world full of them, oddly enough

Tony has a need to make sure people are safe, and that exends to the Spider-Man suit. It’s the classic teenage struggle for independence vs the parental struggle to maintain safety

Tony feels guilty for getting Peter hurt in the Civil War, and Tony processes his guilt with technology

Peter’s sick of school and wants to become an Avenger. I’ve noticed a lot of “smart kids,” myself included, tend to get burnt out on school

Many Spider-Man stories feature a struggle between selfishness and selflessness. Peter wants to stop the Vulture for both of these reasons, which leads to a lot of the trouble he find himself in

I like how the Vulture keeps things under the Avenger’s Radar. It’s a great way to have a street level villain in a world of heroes

“The Shocker! What is this, pro wresting” and then “Now Your the Shocker.” I love those lines

“I thought that was the anti gravity gun.” some groan at that line, but I think it’s funny. He’s not a stone cold killer, but he’s not opposed to being one either.

Some people feel like Peter’s friends forgive him to easily. Maybe...but teenage academic decathalon teams need all the help they can get

Right now Peter is pursuing the Vulture for selfish reasons. And because of that, the DC trip gets out of control

Ned can give Peter bad advice, but I like how he can be the voice of reason too

Peter has a bad habit of causing probelms in this movie. Just like his mentor. But I like how he puts in the work to take resonability

Peter gives up a chance to get closer to the Liz and have fun with friends in order to do his duty as Spider-Man. It’s a classic Spidy moment

I miss Karen. It’s a shame she was only in this movie and Infinity War/Endgame.

I love the street level nature of this movie. I admit the MCU needs more street level stories

All this technology doesn’t fit Spider-Man, and I love the humor that comes from it. He needs to become his own hero, and that will take time

I haven’t meantioned this earlier, but I love the Vulture deisgn and how cobbled together it is. I don’t care for the mask though

“You’re messing with things you don’t understand” That is true. Peter doesn’t understand, but he knows right from wrong

The boat scene feels like somthing out of the original movies. But this Spider-Man isn’t strong enough to do this all by himself. But he does come close.

I love the “Yeah Spider-Man” “Yeah Iron Man” guy. Him and the do a flip guy remind me of extras from the original movies

Toomes is backed into a corner, and is now going to steal from Iron Man himself. Avengers level tech in the streets. It raises the stakes

“If you even cared, you’d actually be here” and the reveal that he is. Love that moment

“I wanted to be like you.” “And I wanted you to be better.” Classic father/son moment, and a great way to show the parallels between Peter and Tony.

“If your nothing without the suit, then you shouldn’t have it.” I love that line, and how it plays into the climax

This is the only movie with worried Aunt May, and she protayes that emotion amazingly

And we get Homecoming.

Life starts to turn around for Peter now that he’s taking a break from being Spider-Man. But duty calls.

“Your terrible at keeping secrets.” Love that kind of superhero humor

I’ve heard the suit was originally going to exclitly be Uncle Ben’s. Which I think would’ve been nice and unentrusive. I’m not bothered by its exclusion though.

I remember the audence in the theater gasping at the Vulture reveal. The daughter Toomes was working so hard for was Liz! We all assumed her name was Liz Allen, but turns out it’s Liz Toomes

And the reveal competly changes the stakes between Spider-Man and the Vulture’s dynamic. To stop him would hurt Liz, but to not stop him would hurt Queens.

Toomes is such a good “girlfiend’s dad” character too

And the legendary scene where the Vulture figures out who Spider-Man is. The acting, the camreawork, the colors, it’s perfect. And the Red turining Green representing Spider-Man and the Vulture. It’s amazing.

I love how the Vulture has a code of honor. Spider-Man saved his daughter, so as long as he lives him along, he’ll leave Spider-Man alone

And he goes back to normal “girlfriend dad” mode so easily too

Love how Peter’s moral delima is shown. Dance with the girl of his dreams, or stop the Vulture?

This is my favorite protype Spider-Man suit. I love how it looks like homemade Spider-Man

I love that Tom Holland can really flip

Ned gets to live his dreams as the guy in the chair

Peter tires to get professional help, but there’s still things only he can do

Tony was planning a new shield for Cap. I guess he still cares deep down

The werehouse scene is great. I love Vulture’s speech. He’s not wrong, but that doesn’t excuse putting such dangarous wepons on the street

There’s more quips in the movie then I remember

The Come on Spider-Man scene. It’s fantastic. It’s so rough to see someone so young be in this situation. But then he remembers that when no help is avalible, he has to find the strength to pull himself out of danger. And then he find the strength to lift the rubble.

“Come on Peter, Come on Peter, Come on Spider-Man.” Love that line

He’s more then just the suit. He is Spider-Man. This is the moment he becomes his own Spider-Man. And his own letmotif plays.

This is when he becoems Spider-Man. No Way Home is when he becomes indepdentent. I argue those are two different things, but I’ll get to that

The fight on the Stark plane is an awesome climax

The plane crashes and no one is hurt

I apparicate seeing the Vulture without his mask

After 5 movies that killed off the villians, here we have a Spider-Man fighting to save his enemy’s life.The start of a message that would be taking to an amazing conclusion later on. But we’ll get to that

In classic Spider-Man fashion, there are negative consequences to Spider-Man’s good deeds. Liz loses her dad (but thankfully he’s still alive), and Peter loses all hope with Liz

And MJ gets friends for the first time

The new Avengers Mansion. I think it was in Endgame. 

It’s nice to see Tony and Peter reconsile

I’m glad to see Peter realizing he not ready to be an Avenger yet. It’s good growth. And it’s funny and Tony and Pepper get married on a whim

And Peter earns the suit back

May finding out Spider-Man identity is hilarious cliffhanger, and I love where it leads

Love seeing that Toomes in an honorable villian. I hope we see Scorpion someday

I forgot just how much I love this movie. It’s funny, it’s dramatic, it’s got great worldbuilding, Tom Holland is amazing as a modern Peter Parker and a rookie Spider-Man, I just love it. I’m so torn between it and Spider-Man 2. I guess I’ll let the more traditional approach win, but I still love this version of Spider-Man

Next time I’ll take a break from the MCU to watch a fantastic work of art.

I started watching loki because I was curious and I realized that I have no memory whatsoever of what happened in endgame

Ever since Age of Ultron, I've seen many people complain about how cliche the wife/family on a farm trope is and I disagree wholeheartedly. In other action movies, it might be; but even then, the wife/family would end up permanently dead by the time the action in the movie ends up going.

In the MCU, Clint is the only character who is able to sustain a positive relationship with his wife and family. Tony comes the closest to this in Endgame but this was after years and years of commitment issues on both his and Pepper's ends (Tony having issues with the world's possible demise and Pepper not being willing to fully commit when Tony is still building suits and constantly putting his life in danger). Clint, by Age of Ultron, has been with SHIELD for a long time and has been with Laura either as long or longer.

I would argue that the inclusion of the family actually informs desires by Tony and Steve. I was rewatched AOU the other night, and you can see it plainly on Steve's face the longing he has for a family like Clint's. He's confused at first and then there's painful longing because he doesn't think he'll ever that. The conversation at the end between Steve and Tony confirms this: them talking about that picket white fence family life. Steve's response isn't that he no longer desires that, it's that he doesn't think he'll ever have that so he throws himself into belonging to a new type of family: The Avengers. Tony's response to this? Try to retire and have a nice life with Pepper, eventually being able to get married and have a little one of his own.

Even now in Hawkeye, Laura is more than just "the wife on the farm." Clint calls her when he needs support because she offers the level-headed logic that he needs. Clint relies on her to get him information. She knows all about his plays, his hideouts, his old "friends," the Ronin persona. She knows it all. They even switch to German immediately when the kids are around and Clint didn't bat an eyelash at this.

Basically, in any other movie or series, the wife and/or kids would've probably been killed off by now, which is the reason for the character arc; in Hawkeye, the wife and kids are his motivation: save the day so he can get home but also be a better person for his wife and kids!

April 2021 Picks

And we’re back with the end to another month. April! Wow! Lots more great picks to talk about this time. Lots of new ones to the list too. So, let’s dive in!

Spoiler territory ahead!

THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER

or should I say Captain America and the Winter Soldier

I just finished the finale last night, so it felt right to start off with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. I really enjoyed it and I feel the episodes got stronger as the series went on. Each one felt like a mini-movie and I was upset it was over and had to wait another week for another one. I think the finale was my favorite. Especially the reveal of Sam as Captain America. I love his suit, his speech and the montage of everyone watching him. The last part of the episode was definitely my favorite and one I can watch on repeat. I loved seeing happy Bucky and him goofing off with the kids in Louisiana. He deserves so much happiness as he has now accepted he’s no longer who he once was. Bucky and Sam’s relationship is fantastic and I can’t wait to see it more. I know there’s a possibility of a second season and they have to be in a future MCU movie. Regarding the villain, I feel I was confused for most of the show as to what their objective was. I’m curious if this is because they had to reshoot parts during the pandemic. I also am mad with Sharon. Like what happened with her? She is definitely the true villain of the show. I also don’t love that we haven’t seen the end of Walker (but Wyatt Russell did a fantastic job). I also loved Torres and I hope he becomes the next Falcon. Definitely so different vibes from Wandavision, but just as good!

THE IRREGULARS

This is a show that more people need to be talking about! It was SO GOOD! I feel like I heard some buzz about it when it first came out, but not much after. It follows the teens featured about who live on the streets during Victorian London. The leader of their group, Bea gets approached by Dr. John Watson (that’s right...as in Sherlock and Watson) to take on a case that has more supernatural qualities. The story takes off from there. I think the group dynamic was fantastic. There wasn’t a character I didn’t like and each one brought something else important to the group (which they even bring up towards the end of the show). [I’ve watched a few cast interviews since finishing the finale and they seem like they get along really well in real life too.] There is a kind of love triangle, but it didn’t bother me and was over fast. I did like both combinations though. Lots of twists and turns along the journey. I have no idea if there will be another season, but there should be. It didn’t end on a major cliffhanger, but definitely ended in a way where it could continue nicely. Come on Netflix. 

HBO’S THE NEVERS

From one show set in Victorian times to the next. The Nevers just premiered on HBO and HBO Max earlier this month. It follows an ensemble of characters, similar to other HBO shows, ranging from characters who are called “the touched” to men in government who are against them. Being “touched” means they have a special talent or power, which can range from healing to speaking other languages, being extremely tall, or being an expectational inventor (I seriously love Penance. I just don’t know how to explain her ability). Amalia True and Penance Adair are two of the main characters and they help bring in others who are touched to a remodeled orphanage that is a safe haven for people like them. Of course there are those who are against them existing. This seems to be at least two groups as someone is abducting and experimenting on some of the touched, but we don’t know who they are...yet. I love the fusion of a historical setting with a fantasy element. I am very excited to see where the show is headed. I also love seeing so many of my favorite British actors on the screen together.      

ONCE UPON A TIME IN WONDERLAND

Time for a throw back. Fans of ABC’s Once Upon a Time might remember the short lived spin off following Alice in Wonderland (and some of Aladdin). It only lasted for one season of 13 episodes, but I remember loving it and I am so happy I can rewatch it on Disney Plus. It reminds me of why I enjoyed OUAT so much and I think this show deserved another season or more crossover with the original show. (Luckily the Knave got that opportunity.) I think it should have aired as a summer show or when OUAT was on hiatus, this way more fans would have tuned in. It is something I’ll believe forever. 

Anyway, I’ll stop ranting now... I love Alice. I think she’s a badass and a fierce warrior. If you follow some of my posts on my other blog, Lydia-yougowith-Stiles, you’ll know that I love a warrior romance and Cyrus and Alice fit that perfectly (even if they are apart for much of the series). I also love Alice’s hair and outfits. Everything about her is cool. Her relationship with the Knave is one of my favorite friendships ever. I think they balance each other out so well and how they spend most of the journey together. Back in the day, I totally shipped them, but now I definitely don’t. (Even though I don’t love Anastasia.) This is definitely worth the watch if you’ve ever heard of Once Upon a Time or not. There is very cheesy CGI especially for 2013, but once you get pass that you’ll love it. 

ZOEY’S EXTRAORDINARY PLAYLIST

It was on a longer break than I expected, and I didn’t miss it as much as I thought I would (which I know doesn’t sound good for a show), but I am still loving all the episodes this season. It feels like there are more musical numbers, which I love. Mandy Moore is killing it with the choreography. There are so many amazing moments. I also was a big fan of the newest glitch episode. Everyone is so talented and I also like that we’ve started to hear from more like Jenna and Tobin. Leif has become one of my favorites. I don’t love the new neighbor next door, but I think we’re done with his storyline. I’m not loving the Zoey love triangle, but I do like her with either Simon or Max. She seems really happy with Simon now. (FYI: I haven’t watched the most recent episode yet. The glitch one was my latest.) Can’t wait for more!    

KUNG FU

CW’s newest show this month was Kung Fu, which I just learned was a reboot. It follows Nicky who returns after 3 years to her home in San Francisco. Her family has mixed feelings as she has had no contact with them for the last 3 years. She is now a Kung Fu master and warrior, out to avenge her mentor’s death and stop a villain from acquiring mythical weapons. The show gives me Arrow vibes every time I watch it. It has similar flashbacks each episode to an earlier time in Nicky’s life. While Nicky’s mission is different, the style just gives me early seasons of Arrow vibes, which I am not complaining about. It stars Legacies’ Alyssa Chen, who I didn’t love on Legacies, but instantly fell in love with Nicky. I think she’s a bad ass character and love how she’s fighting for the underdogs on the streets of San Fran, while also taking down a bigger evil. The love triangle is heating up and I’m definitely team Henry (even though there’s some mystery there). I think he’s great and once again we have an awesome warrior romance. They balance each other so well and it’s only been like 3 episodes. Now they’ve also been sleuthing together and it’s just amazing. 

NANCY DREW

Are you sick of hearing me talk about CW’s Nancy Drew? I hope not because I’m going to fangirl again. I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH! I can’t wait till Wednesday comes and I tune in a little after it starts, so then I can fast forward on my DVR. Then when the episode is over I basically start it all over again and watch select scenes that were awesome. (More specifically, they tend to be Nancy and Ace scenes because I love them and we’re entering so much angst I don’t know if my heart will be able to handle it!!!) 

I’ll say it a thousand times: THIS CAST IS EVERYTHING! Their dynamic is amazing. You can have any match ups and it’ll be a great time. There is not one person I don’t like. I was so upset that there wasn’t a new episode last week (especially because it was my birthday). I loved the last one with the Hardy Boys and that Nace reveal! OMG! I’m so sad that Grant has left again because we barely had him, but I feel he’ll eventually come back. He has to. I loved the ending when he spoke to Thom by signing to him. (My heart!) I seriously can’t say enough great things about this show. It is not your typical CW show and deserves more love and views. So happy a third season has already been confirmed!! 

LAST NOTES

Just started Shadow and Bone on Netflix and am loving it! I’m sure I’ll have an entire post dedicated to it when I’m done. (Currently going to start episode 6.) I have no background on the universe or the books (just what my sister is filling me in with as we watch). I definitely plan on reading Six of Crows after this!

James “Rhodey” Rhodes Crossover AU

Okay, so, stay with me on this. It’s something that I thought of after rewatching a particular movie a little while ago.

After the Snap, Rhodey decides to retire from the military and the Avengers, just like his best friend. He doesn’t necessarily cut off all contact with them, they still talk a decent amount, but he also isn’t the most active in his communication with anyone except Tony and Pepper. Still, now that he’s out of the military and heroism, he wants to find some way to help others. However, it’s when he hears that Pepper is pregnant with her and Tony’s kid that he finally realizes what he wants to do.

When the Snap occurred, so many children were displaced and became orphans. Rhodey applies to become a social worker, going through the approval process and eventually being able to help those children find places to stay. It’s not always the best conditions, but he does try his best.

Through his job, he meets a nice woman, a teacher. She doesn’t recognize him at first. He was a decorated military leader and a regular sight when it comes to the Avengers, but he was usually only ever seen in his suit, which kind of has a big metal helmet covering his face. Still, they hit it off, and she gains an interest in him as a person before she recognizes him from his past exploits. They date and then he eventually marries her. It was a small thing, not crowded. Her family was a little shocked when they saw Tony Stark standing as their new son-in-law’s best man.

They both move on with their lives together. Helping kids in the best way they know how. That is until something interesting happens.

He’s assigned to this pair of kids. Siblings. An older teenage girl with a troublemaking and headstrong attitude a mile long; and young boy who’s intelligence, inventiveness, and natural engineering abilities get help his sister with their antics. Their parents died after the Snap, two of the many casualties that occurred from the aftermath of the disappearance of half of all life on Earth.

Something about the two kind of pulled Rhodes in. He thinks it might be the fact that they remind him of a certain troublemaking genius that he had to deal with college and most of his adult life. They just happened to be split into two people this time.

They’d moved through a couple of homes before he found one that was willing. They weren’t the most caring, but Rhodey knows for a fact that the couple that he put them with weren’t abusive.

Despite this, the kids were regularly at the police station for various different misdemeanors. The officers have long since gotten used to the sight of Rhodey coming into the station to pick up the occasional troublemaker, and the man himself continues to cover for these two kids, allowing them to stay in their current foster home without their foster parents knowing.

Then, he finally finds it. A perfect home for them to live in. They’re willing to accept older kids and seem like the kindest people, from the reviews coming from the other social workers and some of their former charges. However, despite the multiple cases of the kids expressing their wish to leave their current housing situation, they actually say no when he brings this up to them. A few days later, Rhodey figures out why.

The two children had become a major part of a large animal hoarding scandal. Countless stray dogs were found in a multistory, abandoned building. Animal control took control and the police placed them under arrest for a time. They were released, but their foster parents’ refused to take them back. They kids had apparently been stealing different items in order to use in their exploits.

Rhodey, with the other family he had lined up now no longer an option, had no choice but to send the two kids to two seperate gender specific orphanages. Ones that have been overcrowded and underfunded since the Snap.

It’s not a few days later that he gets this feeling. That he wants to know a bit more about just what those kids were up to. With what is probably more than a bit of influence from hanging out with Tony Stark, he completely ignores the police tape at the building and heads inside. There, he finds out just how much work was put into this place. Just how much love and care was put into providing for the needs of the dogs that the kids brought there.

Just as suddenly, a rush of paws is heard as the dogs all run back into the building, despite supposedly being at the pound just hours before. In the entrance of the building; police, animal control, press, and citizens crowd as they follow the dogs in. He sees his wife in the crowd, as well as he two kids that he’d come to care so much about. Using the calm confidence he’s come to possess from working in the military, as a superhero, and as a social worker, he calms the crowd and manages to show them the love, compassion, and care that these kids gave each and every dog they found.

As the press and public rush inside to see the place itself, Rhodey goes to his wife. He’s about to open his mouth, but she already knows what he’s going to say. She agrees completely, but James knows there are still a few things that have to be done, and quickly.

He calls his best friend, Tony Stark, and asks for the man’s help. Tony immediately accepts without even hearing what he’s helping with, but when Rhodey explains the situation to him, the billionaire is even more enthusiastic. He claims that it’ll just be an extension on the wedding gift that he gave Rhodey. The house was a little on the cheap side for the rich business owner’s taste anyways.

So, with that funding, James and his two newly adopted children buy and refurbish the building. They make it a haven for strays and a place where people can bring their own dogs in order to be given a fine and luxurious stay.

I have three questions about writing fanfiction and you’re the best fanfic writer I’ve seen so I’m going to ask them to you if that‘s alright

1. How do you write a lot in chapters, because I never manage to write more than 1k words about the chapter topic

2. How do you stay motivated for writing a long fic?

3. Do you have any tips about how to deal with a large ensemble of characters?

First of all, I'd like to say how happy and honoured I am for this ask! It made me so happy you thought of me. I'll do my best to answer helpfully.

My response ended up being pretty long, to I'll leave it under the cut.

1.

In general, my chapters are between 3k to 6k. I find 4k-5k is a good range for me. Before I talk about writing more in chapters, I think it is important to say that short chapters are not wrong. Short chapters can be wonderful to read!

If you want to work on writing more, I have a few suggestions. First though, the way my writing style works is I go into a story generally knowing the basic plot points, and I write all the chapters first, before I post them. So keep this in mind, since my techniques might need to be adapted for your style.

When starting a chapter, I have what I call the 'bone and meat' method. To write around 5k words, I find each chapter has enough room to explore 3-5 "events". These are the bones of a chapter.

As an example. I will use chapter five of "Alternatively", because I'm guessing you read that one. (If not you can send another ask with some you've read and I can use those).

The bones of this chapter are:

Prelude/set up to Steve learning about Bucky.

Pierce taking Steve to see Bucky

Steve having a breakdown in the elevator

Steve and Tony talking about it

These are the four main things that needed to happen in this chapter. I don't always start a chapter knowing what will happen at the end, but usually by 500 words in, I've figured out what out of my plot points will be happening in the next 5k of words.

When deciding what will be the bones of a chapter, I find I have two systems. Either I give the reader a satisfying cathartic ending, or I leave them in anticipation.

Chapter five is a good example of a mini-arc within a chapter that ends with a satisfying emotional catharsis. If you think of it along a story plotting graph, the prelude is the exposition, Pierce taking Steve to Bucky is the conflict/rising action, Steve's breakdown is the emotional climax of the chapter, and Tony and Steve's conversation is the falling action/resolution.

The ending event of the chapter feels natural, because while the story isn't finished, the emotions and events of the chapter have been tied together and dealt with for the time being.

An anticipatory ending for a chapter would be more like a cliffhanger, and would probably end near the climax of whatever plot points are happening. (Such as chapter 3 of Alternatively, the emotional climax of the chapter hits right at the end.)

So basically, your overall story has rising action and a climax, but if each chapter is roughly outfitted around that too, then it may be easier to write long chapters.

Once you have the bones of a chapter, all you need to do is add in the meat to fill out whatever word count you are aiming for. If you have written the bones of a chapter, but still aren't at a word count you like, then it is simply a case of adding more depth to what is already happening—showing the emotions of the characters, getting into their head, bringing up past events and relating them to what is currently happening, foreshadowing, describing the scene/senses, etc.

Please know that when I'm writing my chapters, I'm not obsessively planning out the steps of a chapter and thinking of all these things constantly. These are just patterns I've noticed after the fact, so they are not hard and fast rules.

As for how I stay motivated for long stories, the thing that works best for me is writing all the chapters before I post the story. I know this system doesn't work for every author (and believe me, sometimes I really want to post), but I find doing so relieves pressure on me, and I don't feel guilty if I don't write a story for weeks or months because I am working on something else.

That being said, for my large Alternate Timeline series, I didn't have time to write all the chapters ahead of time. By the time I was writing The Alternate Handler, I had about a 10 chapter lead.

Things that helped me stay motivated is finding parts of the story that I really wanted to write. I usually write chronologically, so having moments that I knew where coming and I was excited for helped motivate me to continue.

Also, recognising that I sometimes made things harder for myself. Sometimes I'd be stuck on how to finish a scene, or expressing something, and my writing would slow, until I would realise that sometimes things don't need to be written in exact detail. If you don't know how to get a character to walk out of a room, sometimes you can just end the scene there. Unless something is plot relevant, you can write around it, if it is an issue.

Sometimes, if I'm stuck on a story or a chapter, it helps to take a step back and figure out what the actual blockage is. Often it won't be what I think it is. Sometimes it isn't because I don't know how to write it, or I don't know what to write—sometimes I can't write a scene because I haven't seen the movie in a while, and all I need to do is find the battle on youtube and rewatch it. Sometimes it is because I don't know how an engine works, and I need to either look up the information, or make a note of it and move on to another scene.

And sometimes you just gotta clunk out a scene word after word, because once you do, it will be done, and you can always make it better later. You can't edit what isn't written.

3.

Writing Marvel gives me plenty of opportunity to deal with large casts. Generally what happens is I end up focusing on the relationship between a few main characters, while the other characters have less focus.

In my Alternative Timeline series, the relationships between Steve, Bucky, and Tony are the focus.

Of course, this doesn't mean I want to forget about the other members. You'll notice especially in Bucky and Tony's stories that they have secondary relationships with other people like Natasha, Bruce, Clint, Pepper, Peter, and Nebula. These secondary characters get scenes with the main characters too, kind of on a rotational basis.

So first tip is to trim down how many characters you are focusing on, and how many characters are interacting with each other in each scene.

In fics I will often have Thor be away on Asgard, or Clint and Natasha doing missions, etc, so they don't get underfoot.

That being said, there are times like during group meetings, when you can't avoid having everyone in the same room.

In those times, it is important not to forget who is in the room. I will literally count on my fingers, or write down lists of who is supposed to be at the table, so I can remember.

A good example of this on a small scale is Steve's birthday party in chapter 14 of The Alternate Handler. That one has almost every Avenger but Thor sitting in a circle, playing a game. I had specific moments in mind, so I needed to remember who was sitting by who. I wrote down the names in order so I wouldn't forget, and could properly situate people in my head.

An example on a bigger scale is chapter 26 of The Alternate End. In this chapter, the Avengers have a meeting with practically every other character who was there at the final battle.

Yet again, I pare down the cast a little. T'Challa and Shuri aren't there because they are in Wakanda.

To help keep control of the larger group, I start with a vague idea of where everyone is sitting, and then don't go into deeper detail than I have to.

In the scene, we know the Guardians, Peter, and Thor and Loki are all sitting kind of near each other, but I don't specify who is sitting next to who unless I need to.

I also have Tony looking around the table for a few hundred words, seeing each group, and slowly but surely introducing them to the reader. Tony hasn't seen the whole group for a while, so he has a reason to catch the reader up to speed on what has been happening. While he thinks about the life developments of the people around him, the reader starts to get an idea of who is in the room, and their general mood.

A final tip I often use is staggered entrances. If you have a large group, and something Plot Worthy needs to happen when Character A and B talk, then don't have the meeting ready to start right away.

Have some people already sitting, so that your POV character can process them, then have some more people come in, and then some more. (I do this in chapter 19 of The Alternate End, before the time travel jump.)

With a big group, you need time to show what needs to be shown, so give yourself the space to breathe and give the characters the right amount of attention.

StanQuest

Something clicked on in my brain a couple months ago and suddenly Sebastian Stan became the hottest man alive. So I decided to watch everything he’s ever been in. A friend and I called it StanQuest.

Here are my spoiler-free reviews for anyone considering something similar (in inverse chronological order starting with latest works and going back in time. The stars are an overall rating of the work, not of Sebastian’s performance.

This only lists things I could find streaming for free or a price I was willing to pay. It does not count after credits scenes, music videos, or works in which he was uncredited.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021) - TV show - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - This started it all. I very much enjoyed it. Good balance of humor and action, heart and heroics. I’ve watched it four times already, and will watch it again. Bucky Barnes is my favorite character of his and this is my favorite story of Bucky's so far. I can’t wait to see what he does next. (And I have a lot to say about how they treat his trauma in this show. I’ve definitely written about it before and may again.)

Monday (2020) - Movie - ⭐⭐⭐ - This is the one where he gets naked. If that’s all you’re looking for, enjoy. It was a very realistic portrayal of a relationship between two deeply flawed people. It can get depressing. But hey, penis.

The Devil All the Time (2020) - Movie - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - If you think Monday is depressing, this movie says “hold my beer”. But something about it is just captivating. It’s really disturbing, and if you’ve ever been screwed over by American Evangelical Christianity it might be more disturbing. Still, I’ve watched it twice. And as much of a bastard as Lee Bodecker is, he also looks really cuddly. He’s just barely in it.

The Last Full Measure (2019) - Movie - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - You will cry. A lot. It’s based on a true story. Sebastian plays a man who cares more about his career than this weird quest dumped on his desk by his boss, but changes his mind and his heart as he investigates why a war hero was denied a medal of honor 34 years before. Definitely recommend.

Endings, Beginnings (2019) - Movie - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - One of two love interests in the complicated life of Shailene Woodley’s Daphne, Sebastian is an adorable mess. The editing is interesting and fresh feeling. Watch it and you’ll see what I mean. Fair amount of sex in this movie, and you see his butt. It’s a very nice butt. I’ve watched this one a few times so far.

Avengers: Endgame (2019) - Movie - ⭐⭐ - There is no reason to watch this movie if you’re not familiar with at least most of the rest of the MCU. It plays merry hob with the rules of time travel, and only makes sense if you don’t really think about it. In my opinion, the ending is really freaking stupid comsidering his character’s history, but at least it sets up TFatWS, which was amazing.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle (2018) - Movie - ⭐ - If you’re into movies that are creepy but also almost nothing happens for most of the movie, this is the one for you. Sebastian is handsome as hell, but also a complete asshole. As fine as he is, I’m not gonna watch this again. I fucking hated it.

Destroyer (2018) - Movie - ⭐⭐- I had a hard time paying attention to the plot because it seemed like they made this movie just to get Nicole Kidman an Oscar nomination for wearing ugly makeup and playing a complete mess of a person. It’s a fine movie, and all of the performances are good. Sebastian looks surprisingly good with the short hair and goatee. Ultimately, the plot is depressing and the whole movie seems kind of pointless.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018) - Movie - ⭐⭐- Again, no reason to watch this if you aren’t already familiar with all the movies leading up to it. It’s long and the villain looks like Grimace and a California Raisin had an evil baby. The ending made me scream with frustration that I had to wait until the next one came out. Now I just watch them back-to-back if I watch them at all. It’s not a good movie, but it is part of a long-form story that I enjoy in general.

I’m Not Here (2017) - Movie - ⭐⭐- Another depressing one. Told over the course of one man’s terrible life, it’s a sad account of how much your parents can fuck you up. Sebastian portrays the middle part of the man’s life. J.K. Simmons plays the current day part and unreliable narrator.. Do not watch unless you are fully prepared to be sad for a really long time after.

I, Tonya (2017) - Movie - ⭐⭐⭐- This movie is hilarious. I mean, the true story is insane and really stupid. The spousal abuse is hard to watch, and Sebastian’s mustache in this is a war crime. But the acting is great and it’s a very engaging movie. The parts that aren’t horrifying are pretty funny.

Logan Lucky (2017) - Movie - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Watch. This. Movie. Sebastian Stan is only in it a little, but it’s a really fun, clever caper/heist movie and everyone in it is fantastic. I don’t want to say anything else about it if you’re going in fresh. I’ll be rewatching this one a lot

Captain America: Civil War (2016) - Movie - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - If you ignore how kind of silly the conflict over the Sokovia Accords is, this is a good Marvel movie. Sebastian gets a lot of screen time because Bucky is the more pressing concern/urgent point of contention than the Accords. Bucky is my favorite character of his partly because of this movie.

The Martian (2015) - Movie - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I’m watching it(again) as I’m typing this. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched it. Sebastian Stan isn’t in it very much, but he’s very cute and so is his little story arc. Mostly I watch it because Ridley Scott made a fantastic movie. If you can get your hands on the Blu-Ray, it comes with a ton of extras. They made a very complete story that isn’t all seen in the movie. A lot of it is stuff about Mars, but there are also extra “crew” interviews, so there’s another chance to see more of Sebastian’s character.

Ricki and the Flash (2015) - Movie - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - He’s not in this very much, but he’s very cute when he does appear. It’s all about the relationship between Ricki and her daughter. Definitely rewatchable. Meryl Streep is fantastic, because she’s Meryl Streep.

The Bronze (2015) - Movie - ⭐ - This is not a good movie. It’s about Olympic gymnastics, so it might be slightly more interesting right now while the Olympics are happening. Sebastian isn’t in it a lot, but his performance is certainly… memorable. Weirdest sex scene I’ve ever seen. Worth watching just for that.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) - Movie - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - This is the one I can watch over and over. I bought a Winter Soldier face mask for when I need to feel like a badass. Bucky’s story is really sad, but he’s also extremely sexy with the metal arm and determined walk.

Once Upon a Time (2012-2013) - TV Show - ⭐⭐⭐ - This show is so stupid, but it’s also fun. If you haven’t seen it, the premise is that fairy tale characters are real and live in another land. Snow White’s Evil Queen casts a spell to transport a bunch of them to a town she creates in Maine called Storybrooke, and gives them all fake memories so she can be mayor and watch them all not remember who they are. Sebastian plays Jefferson, a.k.a. The Mad Hatter. He’s in a few episodes in season 1 and 2, and doesn’t get a ton of screen time, but he’s really cute and tragic as Jefferson. It probably helps to watch the whole first season just to understand his episodes, but that’s up to your tolerance for weird shit. Note: IMDB says he’s in an episode uncredited, but I’ve watched it and didn’t see him anywhere in that one.

Labyrinth (2012) - TV Mini-Series - ⭐⭐⭐ - Two episodes that tell a complete story. Sebastian isn’t in this one a whole lot, but he is adorable. It’s a strange story about religious stuff and a sort of Holy Grail that’s three books. It’s hard to describe. It’s on Amazon Prime right now, but they’re taking it down August 8, 2021, so watch it while you can.

The Apparition (2012) - Movie - ⭐ - If you like horror movies, you might like this. I did not. From what I understand, it’s not a very good horror movie. Watch with caution and expect it to suck.

Political Animals (2012) - TV Mini-Series - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I had to buy this through Apple and watch it on a Mac, but it was worth it. Sebastian plays TJ Hammond, the out gay son of a former American president who is clearly based on Bill Clinton. Sigorney Weaver plays the former first lady and current secretary of state. TJ struggles with addiction and relationship problems. His performance is heart-wrenching. The whole show is pretty great. I wish there was more of it.

Gone (2012) - Movie - ⭐⭐⭐ - More of a psychological thriller than a horror movie. Sebastian has a small amount of screen time as the worried boyfriend. Amanda Seyfried is good. She carries the film well on her own.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) - Movie - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - If you haven’t seen this yet, I’d like to know what it’s like under your rock. This is a movie I can rewatch a lot, and have. I 100% cried in the theater. Sebastian looks fantastic in uniform as Bucky Barnes. This is his introduction and the start of his ultimately tragic story (before he’s saved by his best friend, again).

Black Swan (2010) - Movie - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Sebastian is barely in this. He’s basically just in one scene in a dance club. But I watched it to try to complete StanQuest, and I had seen it before. It’s a good movie, but might induce some nightmares, depending on what scares you. If Natalie Portman didn’t at least get a nomination for an award she was robbed.

Gossip Girl (2007-2010) - TV Show - ⭐⭐ - Carter Baizen is a little shit. The episodes with Sebastian in them might have made more sense if I watched the show from the beginning, but I didn’t want to. His character is an asshole, but a very cute one.

Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) - Movie - ⭐⭐⭐- The people who made this movie are bad at math, and their rules of time travel are sketchy at best, but it is funny and entertaining. Sebastian plays a ski patrol bro who’s paranoid about the Russians, which is hilarious irony to me. Worth watching if you want to laugh at something dumb.

Kings (2009) - TV Show - ⭐⭐⭐- Sebastian plays Jack Benjamin, the closeted gay son of the king of a fictional place. It’s loosely based on the David and Goliath story from the Bible. Sebastian is so sad and so gay. His family makes his life a living hell. Ian McShane is a force of nature in this. It’s only one season. I’ve watched it twice. I will watch it again.

Spread (2009) - Movie - no stars - This movie was practically unwatchable. It stars Ashton Kutcher and Anne Heche as a romantic couple, I guess? I ended up just skipping to Sebastian’s scenes and only watching those. Still painful.

The Covenant (2006) - Movie - ⭐⭐⭐ - This movie is so fuckig stupid, and I will watch it a ridiculous number of times. It’s about magic and teenagers, like The Craft for boys. Nothing about it makes sense. It’s terrible, almost irredeemable, but an evil Sebastian with magic powers is a siren song that will make me steer my boat right into the rocks.

And there you have it. There are a bunch of earlier things on IMDB that I just can’t find or don’t want to pay to rent. Maybe some day I’ll watch them and add them to this list.

Falling. You had always wondered what it would feel like going from a height like this. It was almost euphoric, the wind pushing against your back as you fell, carrying your tears up with it. These were your final moments, you knew that, there was no surviving a fall from this height, not even with the strength provided by the asgardian blood that ran through your veins. So you did what most people did in their final moments, reflected on how you got here.

It all started centuries ago, in the golden palace on Asgard, the place where you were raised as a noble, your father being one of the Allfather’s most trusted advisers. Your memory of those years were riddled with the overwhelming feelings of loneliness, your only company being the vast array books in the palace library. You were lonely until the day you met him.

It was a day like any other, your father was tied up in various meetings with the Allfather and other important asgardians and like always you were camped out in the library. Through the years that you had spent here it had become your safe space and in the very back in a small corner was your place of happiness there was a small emerald chaise lounge with just the right amount of light and all of the books you had ever enjoyed stacked up around it. What you didn’t expect was for someone to already be occupying your oh so sacred spot.

He was stretched out on the lounge, his thin form but tall form draping over the edge a book in hand. You knew who he was of course, you were a noble after all, the dark prince, the forgotten prince, the boy that spent his years in his brother's shadow. In all of your 400+ years you don’t think you had ever seen him so peaceful, so you did what you usually did around people, you turned to leave. What you weren’t expecting was to feel the feather light touch of a hand on your wrist.

You looked up your eyes meeting his soft green ones. You wondered how he knew about this corner, about you and your time here, but pushed the thought aside as your gazes locked. There was something there, an unspoken understanding from one outsider to the other. He smiled softly, pulling a book out of seemingly nowhere and handing it to you wordlessly. You smiled in thanks and watched as he left, his green cape swaying behind him. And that was how it started.

You would have expected falling to be something that was over quickly yet it somehow seemed like the longest moment of your life. You knew you were getting closer though, you could see the tops of other buildings now, so as you waited you went back to thinking.

After that fateful meeting your relationship with the raven haired prince slowly started to change, for nearly fifty years the two of you would simply give each other books you thought the other would like, starting off wordlessly and eventually progressing into bigger and bigger conversations until the two of you would spend hours in the library together, animatedly talking about whatever book you were interested in that day, no doubt blowing off countless responsibilities your fathers had begun to place on you now that you were growing older.

It was around a hundred years after your first meeting that your relationship crossed from friendly conversations to stolen kisses and secret meetings. The two of you were around 500 and 600 now, both preparing for your futures. Loki trained to become both a warrior and a king, despite the limited possibility of him ascending to the throne, and you training alongside Her Majesty the Queen and other female nobles, preparing to become the perfect wife and partner for the next generation of Asgardian nobles. Yet you still found time for each other, spending as much time as you could together, only finding comfort in one another.

It was when the two of you hit 900 and 800 that Loki became consumed by his anger. It was in secret of course, as most of his emotions often were, but his emotions were always something you and you alone had the privilege of seeing. By now you and the pale prince were an official couple, Odin and Frigga having blessed the relationship, allowing Loki to court you and eventually allowing the two of you to biome some form of official, not married, but official enough to be allowed to share a bedchamber without getting odd looks.

In the past Loki had always confessed his anger to you, never allowing it to influence his actions, reveling in the catharsis he achieved by ranting to you as you played with his hair, but now, as he watched his arrogant brother become more and more loved by the people, as he watched his brother be promised the throne despite his hotheadedness and obsession with being a warrior, something within him snapped. Now he would yell for hours on end, often trashing your chambers, rather than his usual soft kisses that were full of love, his kisses were messy, needy and full of all the rage he could never show. It was in everything he did every emotion tainted by the anger that masked the true emotion. But you accepted him, every bit of him and so you did what you could. You matched his energy but also reminded him that you were still there, still there to give him new books, still there to play with his hair and still there for him to lean on.

As you fell your thoughts wandered back to the present, you were nearly there, you could hear the screams below, and you could see the chitauri army and the chaos that they brought with them. You could see the faint outline of Iron Man landing on the tower and your thoughts once again returned to Loki and everything that brought you here.

After the exile of Thor and the era of Loki as King you thought maybe everything would stop, the looks and the whispers that everyone would finally stop treating Loki like he was just a liar and a danger, you yearned for and prayed for the return of the Loki you fell in love with. You were distraught when Thor returned, telling you that Loki’s ascension to the throne was all based on lies, that he had been responsible for the frost giants that had gotten in the palace, that he had tried to kill his friends, that he had tried to kill his brother. And that he was now plotting something far worse. Somehow, as much as you didn’t want to, you knew it was true, but despite everything you knew that your feelings wouldn’t change. So you fought Thor, or at least tried, not being able to actually bring yourself to deal any damage to the god, too overwhelmed with the truth of it all, so you ran. You ran back to the place where it all started, back to the library, back to your corner of safety.

You found out he was dead the next day, Thor sought you out to tell you himself, yet somehow there was the nagging feeling in the back of your brain that Thor was wrong, and boy were you right.

It was 2012 when he finally resurfaced, you had spent most of your days hiding from the asgardian population, from the prying eyes of everyone who figured you had something to do with the events of the previous year. You were once again faced with the fact that your feelings remained unchanged for him, that despite the reality of what he was doing, trying to enslave a whole population you would still do anything for him. It was Heimdall who alerted you of his return, but it was the Queen who convinced you to go to him, to try and bring back the love that you had spent nearly 600 of your years devoted to. So you did.

You landed on the rooftop of Stark Tower, admiring the pretty pattern the bifrost has burned into the gravel. It wasn’t long before Loki found you, after all the Bifrost was kinda hard to miss. It was emotional for you, seeing the man you loved after spending so long thinking he might be dead. You approached him slowly, he rushed to you in return, overjoyed at the sight of you, telling you of his grand plan, inviting you to join him, to be his queen, to rule over Midgard with him. It was tempting and for a moment, just a single moment you considered it. But you refused, nearly begging him to stop the madness, to return to you, attempting to reassure him that no matter what you would still be there, that you would still love him despite the things he’d done in the past few years. You told him how that while you didn’t quite understand everything that you could listen and love him, that you would give him everything the world never did. Yet, it was when you looked up into his eyes that you realised that something was truly wrong, that your prince might truly be gone, rather than the normal green that usually stared down at you a piercing blue met your gaze.

You backed up slowly, this was the man you loved yes but there was something else in him too, something that was evil and corrupting, something you were sure would infect you too if you joined him. And it was backing up that had been your mistake, the platform on top of Stark Tower was by no means small but you had simply landed too close to the edge, and as you stepped back you felt nothing and you began to fall.

Loki lunged, moving faster than he ever had, just barely grasping your left hand in time. And you watched as his eyes flickered in between his green and the unnatural blue and that's when you realised, he was scared. But you were slipping and his grip simply wasn’t enough. You smiled softly, knowing what was going to happen next, tears beginning to stream down your face, and with your last words you simply whispered “I love you.”.

You fell, leaving Loki only clutching air, but then he felt something else as his fist closed around the air where your hand had just been. He knew what it was almost immediately and looked down to find the gold band with a single emerald in it sat in his hand. The ring that had adorned your ring finger for the past three years, the proof that despite it all you loved him. And you smiled.

You knew it was the end now, the sound of cars and people louder than before, and you wondered what would have happened if you hadn’t been in the library that day. With your very last moments you imagined yourself on the emerald chaise, surrounded by books with Loki on your lap, playing with his hair as he read to you and you smiled for the last time
