She reached across the table to select a raspberry pastry, her fingers brushing against the red-head’s as they left her side. He visibly tensed, but she ignored it, along with the minute pang she felt in her chest. The dessert was flaky and crumbly in her fingers, it’s deep, striking red jelly oozing through the cracks in the glazed surface.
“My oh my, are you stuffing your face with delights again? How unsavory.” The person in question twisted her head, hiding her scarlet stained gloves behind her back.
“Lady Nikolina!” She elicited a wry smile from the woman, whose cold eyes disapprovingly darted to her out of view fingers.
“You really ought to think about that figure of yours more. Before you know it, you could be a cream puff! Suitors want slim ladies, dear, not large ones.” A strike of crimson striped her smooth cheeks and she nodded.
“Of course, My Lady.” The princess could practically see her devoted bodyguard’s seething gaze, he always had disliked Lady Nikolina, after all. The protectiveness radiating off of him was comforting, and soon the blush she beheld wasn’t being caused by the snobbish Marquiess before her.
“Speaking of suitors-”
“Actually, my apologies, Nikolina, but I’m afraid I’ve got a dance coming up, and I can’t possibly wait. We shall have to continue this lovely little talk at a later date.” Casting the woman a charming smile, she scurried off, pulling Chuuya along with her. He immediately split their hands.
“Princess.” Their gazes met, his swirling pools of cerulean reprimanding her without a single spoken word, but she got the message, and it burned another hole into her soul.
He couldn’t be with her.
He didn’t want to be with her.
Tears prickled her lashes like raindrops, but she pushed them back, refusing to show vulnerability amongst a crowd of powerful politicians and kings. She could see his hues soften, and then harden merely seconds later, his hand habitually reaching to adjust his hat. His familiar mouth looked so inviting, his orbs safe and comforting, but they were not hers.
When she had admitted her flaming affection to him, she had been sure that he had reciprocated those passionate emotions winding around her heart, but he had swiftly shut her down, all of the fleeting touches and lingering bouts of eye contact dissipating like boiling water, vanishing like a ship at sea, breaking like her fragile heart.
Sweeping her scarlet skirts up into her hands, she traversed the expanse of the ballroom, waving politely to trading partners and their stunning wives, nearly tripping over her golden heels if it weren’t for her companion’s lightning reflexes. A murmured ‘thank you’ kissed her lips, but she was quick to continue walking, her dance card heavy in her pocket.
“Princess! It’s almost time for our dance! Wherever have you been?”
“Lord Mizuki. I was conversing with the lovely Lady Nikolina, I’m afraid.”
“Ah. And what positively thrilling topic did you discuss this time?” A laugh escaped her lips as she gazed up at the snow-headed boy.
“My less than attractive addiction to the cook’s tarts, per usual.” Mizuki's emerald colored eyes followed her every moment as she chuckled at her previous encounter; he held his ivory hand out to her.
“Let’s dance, shall we?” The only person she wanted to dance with was Chuuya, but she obliged, letting her dainty palm rest against his. To say she was shocked when he reached forward and urgently grabbed her forearm was an understatement.
“Chuu...ya?” He immediately released her.
“You better come back right after.” She huffed, swiveling her gaze away from his alluring eyes and letting her suitor tug her away.
He swept her out to the dance floor with grace and agility, weaving through the herds of human beings like a serpent, one hand resting on her corseted waist. Once the waltz had begun, he twirled her and moved her with ease, his grace and royal privilege shining through like the golden sun. His firm grip on the curve of her body was relaxing and coaxing, as if catching her hesitance and disliking for the ordeal.
“My lady, what was that all about with your… bodyguard, is it? I’ve heard he is quite extraordinary.” She let her eyes flutter up to meet his, mind breezing towards Chuuya’s form, his strong arms and beautiful hues.
“You are correct, Lord Mizuki, Chuuya is quite effective. He has his faults, for example, his extreme impatience and impossibly short tempered, but I’ve known him since I was a child.” She looked fondly over at his tense form, narrowed eyes and locked jaw. “He is awfully protective.”
“As I can see.” She averted her eyes back to her dance partner, whose own were sharp and limpid, staring directly at the opposing man.
“Mizuki… you’ve stopped dancing.”
“Ah! Yes, my bad, pardon me, Princess.” He quickly got back into the flow, keeping in sync with the plethora of other couples.
Once the music had faded out, she curtsied slightly towards her companion, immediately leaving the marble beneath her feet and heading towards the sidelines. Rather than immediately treading back towards her designated “lap dog”, a plan formulated in her brilliant mind, one she wouldn’t have been able to pull off with the ability user around.
Hues flicking to Chuuya’s position (he was clearly searching for her), she scurried towards the back stairway, grabbing Lady Nikolina’s garish hat directly off of her head as a disguise. Swinging her hips in the Marquiess’ fashion, she easily traversed the velvet carpeted steps, gloved hand delicately running up the glass railing, tracing each intricate design and emblem. Lady Nikolina’s rooms were just down the hall, so she presumed that if she headed left she could discreetly loop around without causing a commotion. Chuuya wouldn’t risk a confrontation with Nikolina even if he suspected it was the princess. She flicked her hands towards the guard discriminatingly, as a sort of greeting so he knew where she was headed off to, which she hoped he assumed was her chambers. Refraining from viewing the astounding paintings of her heritage lining the towering walls and sky-breaking ceiling, she stepped forward with urgency, gold slippers clicking on the obsidian beneath her feet. She could practically feel freedom in her hands, the balcony merely meters away, she could feel the cool autumn air piercing her lungs, the comforting hum of crickets and light gabber of guests still entering her father’s party.
The shining glass french doors were open in moments, and she spun in euphoria; no more pining suitors, no more reprimanding love interests, no more chastising Marquesses; her plan had been utterly foolproof. Except for one little detail.
Just as she had gotten used to her balcony experience, the entryway slammed open again, a deep, familiar voice slicing through the silence like a bomb, loud and uncontrollable.
“Oi! What the hell do you think you’re doing out here?! Running away like that? Did you really think I wouldn’t be able to recognize you with someone else’s hat on?!” She gulped bracing herself for the lecture to come. “You’re such a stubborn little shit. First you insist on wearing that absurdly fancy dress, then you decide to waltz with that sly snake Mizuki, and for some reason you still have the nerve to sneak away from the ball- from me!” His glare could kill the fluffiest of bunny rabbits, but it didn’t faze her.
“Well, maybe you should stop being a prick about your actions! I could care less whether you held my hand, you idiot!” She thrust her arms down to her sides. “And what does my dress or Lord Mizuki have anything to do with this?! Are you just jealous or something?!” A low growl rose from his throat like the impending rumble of distant thunder, but she was unperturbed. “I’m not stupid, Chuu! I know you feel just the same way I do! I’ve known you for years, you dumbass!” A wisp of hair tumbled in front of her eyes, shielding the building tears from the man. They rebelliously streaked down her rosy cheeks moments later anyway, like rain pouring from (e/c) clouds. She swore she heard a relenting sigh puff out into the silence, but her own quiet whimpers made her unsure of his intentions. Abruptly, one lithe arm looped around her waist tugging her in, his head balancing on top her hers and consequently sending her glittering tiara tumbling to the floor.
“Listen up, [Name].” She felt a bout of dizziness waft over her as she breathed in his addictive scent of cologne and wine, her corset suddenly felt wound too tightly, and she couldn’t breathe.
“Chuuya…”
“You’re a princess. I’m your bodyguard. You are supposed to be married off to a wealthy prince, not your me.”
“I don’t care.”
“See? That’s the problem. I care because my job is on the line.” Craning her head up, she met her eyes with his shockingly blue ones, pleading from the depths of her heart.
“You’d choose your job over me?” He grumbled, fixing his hat.
“You are my job, dumbass.” Continuing to look up at him through her lashes, she tossed the bait.
“Are you saying you don’t want to lose me?” Hook. Line. Sinker. He peered back at her, a light flush across his cheeks. His gaze never left her, and they sat in a forcefield of quiet for five minutes before she made a move, leaning forward into his space. Allowing her lids to flitter closed, she met his lips boldly, the warmth from him enveloping her entire being, drawing her in, and he managed to kiss back, soon becoming more passionate than her. Hands flying to her waist, he tugged her flush against him, her arms winding around his neck and plunging into the forest of orange that topped his head.
“[Name]...” He murmured, his voice low and husky with desire. His longing was simple to spot in his deep, flaming smooches against her lips, and she was feeling the same emotions course through her. He loved her. She loved him. They had known since they had both realized it within themselves.
She was the first to draw away, and he immediately tried to capture her lips again, but she held him back, smiling slightly. The snarky remark lingering on her tongue melted away when she met his eyes, her heart swelling at his adoring expression.
“You’re right,” He murmured gruffly, keeping her close. “I do love you.”

Am I the only one who thinks, just a teensy bit, that zoyalina haters are (at least some) resentful nikolina fans? They hate malina so much, now that alarkling sank for good Nikolai was the only hope for her "ending up with the right guy".
yesss i completely agree!!! i didn’t actually finish tgt but from what i’ve seen around the fandom nikolai is deemed to have been the best option for alina (sans le darkling quoth the stans) and now they just can’t get over themselves and accept that zoya and nikolai are perfect for each other; their dynamic is amazing and their support and acceptance of each other is so healthy + they FIT TOGETHER SO WELL both on the surface (optimistic/pessimistic, romantic/cynic, light-hearted/serious) and in their hearts (they have both experienced childhood trauma, are kind of aloof from their peers due to status or character or looks, and would do what it takes to save ravka); and their banter??? hands down the most charismatic ship in literature NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT THEY’RE PRACTICALLY AN OLD MARRIED COUPLE LIKE WHAT KIND OF PERSON WOULD REFUSE TO EVEN GIVE THEM A CHANCE
another underlying thing in the fandom seems to be a bone-deep antipathy towards zoya which honestly? wow. i can’t believe it’s 2k19 and people still feel insecure enough to hate on strong independent emotionally vulnerable layered down-to-earth focused relatable animal-loving biracial ICONIC female characters im-
(on an unpopular note, i had my eye on zoya ever since her first appearance in tgt and i knew she was the kind of character i would defend with my life but i didn’t have the chance to spend much time with her then because alina bored me to death with her constant moping & the darkling was a brooding trope #sorrynotsorry anyway what i’m getting at is i don’t know how she was portrayed in tgt (probably as a mean girl/bitch for no reason) but even if leigh fell for that trope when introducing her people should learn to acknowledge depth in controversial female characters and not expect them to reflect the one-dimensional bullshit we’ve been fed by films and tv and it makes me sad to see people are still unable to accept that girls are not obliged to be nice in order to be good people)
wow this turned out longer then expected, if anyone would like to add more about nikolina dynamics please do since i really can’t akjfkafg

you can save this one until you finish the trilogy ;D nikolina + 14 “Can I have this dance?”
this turned out to be something very different than what I first imagined, also I still have no idea what kind of AU this is, but I hope you will like it^^
nikolina + 14 “Can I havethis dance?”
Alina broke the surface first. She got picked up by a larger wave and broughther right to the shores. Everything around her seemed foggy and it was hard tobreath, but as she felt the sand under her hand her heart calmed down. Thewaves still washed around her, but she closed her eyes, not only to cool down, but to go through what happened just a few minutes ago.
But before she could do that she heard a big gasp behind her and when sheopened her eyes again it was filled with fire.
“How could you do that?” she shouted as she turned around to face thecaptain.
Nikolai was barely standing as a wave washed over him, knocking him off hisbalance, but he managed not to fall over. “Happy to see you are alive too.”
“We almost died because of you!” He didn’t even raise an eyebrow at heraccusation.
“But we are alive. And right now that’s all that matters.”
Alina stood up, but almost fall back as another wave came. After she wasstanding still she spoke calmly. “Yes, we are alive,” she paused and continuedwith the same rage as she started with. “But where are we?”
She turned back to take a look at where they end up at: a desert island. Thesandy beach was followed with some tropical forest, which was like a littlegreen spot in the middle of it. Even with that this island still was a smallspeck of dust in the middle of the True Sea.
“An island. This is an island.”
“I know!”
But Nikolai acted like he doesn’t even hear her. “Actually, this is quitenice.”
He looked around the first time and he felt like it could have been worse.Unfortunately Alina didn’t felt like that at all and since he wasn’t looking ather he wasn’t able to dodge when Alina plashed water at him.
“Hey!”
Alina stamped her feet. “We got stranded on a desert island!”
“It’s better than being in the depths of the ocean.”
“And why exactly are we even debating it, huh?” She put her hands on herhips. “Is it my fault? No. Is it the pirates’ fault, who captured us? No. Is ityou crews fault, who abandoned us? No. It’s your fault.”
“Wait, why don’t you blame the pirates? They made you walk the plank.”
“Yes and why did I had to do that?” She paused for a second and tried tocatch her breath. Almost drowning and shouting didn’t seem to work for her.
“I thought they will just toss us into the sea, like they usually do.” Hewalked forward, where the water didn’t touch the shore. “But you did it withsuch dignity. You should have seen their face.”
“How can you say that?” She went after him. “I supposed to be in Os Kervotomorrow! You have any idea how important it is to me? They are waiting forme!”
“Then they will wait a bit more.”
Alina took a deep breath. “I can’t believe it.”
“Oh, look at that.” Nikolai walked closer to one of the trees. “Do you wantsome coconut?”
He turned back to Alina with a smile, but she wasn’t impressed with him atall. She was still upset and the fact that he didn’t seem to care about theircurrent situation at all just made her even more furious.
She walked past him and headed right in the direction of the topical forest.Nikolai called after her as she began to cross it.
“Where are you going?”
“As far away from you as I can, you nonchalant loon!”
He didn’t say anything or at least she didn’t hear anything. She marchedthrough it and a few minutes later ended up at the other side of the island. Itwas just like the other one: sand and some smaller rocks. Nothing else.
She went back a little, stopped around the middle of it and sit down on alog. She buried her face in her hands and wanted to calm down now. She neededto calm down.
Only a moment later she heard noises. She looked up, tried to find thesource, but all she saw was a turtle.
“At least I have company.” The turtle moved slowly, but somehow she felt abit better by its presence.
She looked at the side, where she came from. “How could he do that?”
She turned back to the turtle. “It was supposed to be a swift journey backto Ravka and I end up here. In a desert island. Why did it have to happen whenit matter so much?”
She rested her chin on her hand and looked at the small animal. “You don’tknow that, right?”
It was her first solo trip as a diplomat and she was sent to the SouthernColonies, which made her visit even more significant.
But she would have thought it would end badly. She was supposed to travelback with a different ship, but she got back to the port too late. Then she metwith a pirate, who offered her that he will take her back to Ravka. Foolishlyshe took it and now here she is, in a desert island with the captain, who ’willtake her home in a blink’.
They could have been around the coast by now. Alina only noticed the shouting, then she had realised that the ship have been attacked by pirates. Turns outthose pirates didn’t like these pirates, especially the captain. And if itwasn’t enough the crew decided that they don’t want to be a part of any of thatand escaped the attack in the jolly boats, leaving her and the captain behind.
Then the attackers wanted something back from the captain, she tried to tellthem she has nothing to do with him, who she is and why she was there, but theydidn’t believe her and decided to toss them into the sea. But quickly theycanged their minds and made her walk the plank instead, but they tossed Nikolaiafter her.
He is right, they could have died. The waves were strong and the fact thatthere were land close to them is a miracle.
It’s not really him who she was angry, it was more the situation. She neededto blame someone for this and he was the closest, when actually she was the onewho missed her ship and then made a deal with him.
She kept wondering about what happened until it got dark. The sun has gonedown by now and a whole family of turtles gathered not too far from her. Shestood up and saw something glowing among the leaves.
As she walked closer she got back to the shore where they arrived at. A firewas burning, around it three logs were placed, next to them a small breeze blowthe wet clothes. Behind them an open chest, which seemed familiar to her andafter a few steps she realized it was her chest and her clothes.
Nikolai was sitting on one of the logs, cooking fish over the fire. Therewere also some fruits and coconuts, which he probably found around there.
“I see you have been occupied.” She sat down to another log.
“And I see you are not mad anymore.”
“Look, I’m sorry, I was mad at everything and you were the only person Icould shout at.”
“I’m not mad, in some way it was my fault, Miss Starkov.”
“I don’t think there is any reason not to get to first name basis.” Shesighed. “And I hate Miss Starkov. Makes me remember of that awful Duke.”
“All right, Alina. Then we are fine, right?”
“Yes, we are.” She looked at him first, but then noticed the chest again.“Where did you find the chest?”
He turned the fish around. “Looks like they dumped our stuff into the sea. Icollected as much as I could.”
Nikolai stood up and walked to the chest. He was looking for a brief minute, then pulled out a smaller box. Alina almost immediately noticed it.
“My music box. Is it…?”
Before she could ask he opened it and enchanting melody came from it. Itmade her smile.
Nikolai took a step closer to her and offered her his hand. “Can I have thisdance?”
“Aren’t you guys only dance when you are drunk?”
“I can make an exception for you.”
She shook her head, but accepted his offer. Again.
He was a surprisingly good dancer and she almost felt a bit nervous abouther own dance skills. But he didn’t say anything about that.
“I honestly wanted to get you back to Os Kervo in time. Never carried a diplomatto home before.”
“We are all the same boring people, who want’s peace and alliance.”
He snorted. “Boring.”
“Well, I’m not a hotshot pirate, like you.”
“Let’s stick with sailor.”
“I heard those pirates,” she looked up into his eyes. “They talked about youlike they know you and as an outsider, it felt like they did know you verywell.”
He avoided eye contact, looked over her, but then he noticed something: shewas shivering.
“Are you cold?”
“No, I just want to kno—„ But he already let her go, went to the chest andpicked up a coat.
“Put this on.” It was his coat. The rough brown material had seen betterdays. It was worn-out and torn around it’s pockets, but at least it was warm.
“Now you look like a pirate.” He grinned. “Only the hat’s missing.”
“You don’t have a hat?”
“Yeah, I do.” He walked back to the fire.
“And where is that?”
“I don’t know.”
Alina’s tilted her head. “What do you mean you don’t know?”
“I have a hat, I just left it somewhere, sometime, I don’t remember.” Hetook the fish off the fire.
“Then you don’t have a hat.”
“I do. I just don’t know where it is.”
She sighed. “Why don’t you just buy a new one?”
“Why, when I have a perfect one, I just have to wait until I find it.”
Alina had to take a deep breath and sat back down to the log.
“This is what it will be like from now? One of us get’s mad at the other, then we make peace, then it happens again and it will just go on and on.” Shestared in front of her, into the dark waves. “We’re going to get crazy.”
“Don’t worry, won’t have time for that.”
“Right, we have to think about surviving. I’ve only met with turtles, so wewill be fine, but we can’t eat fish all the time, we have to think about that…”
“Alina.” Nikolai tried to get her attention, but he failed.
“… Also, I thought we might could build a raft, maybe we could get to a biggerisland or any other kind of land…”
“Alina.”
“… But I’m not sure we will find enough wood for it.”
“Alina!” His voice was harsher now and it has reached its goal.
“I know, I’m sorry. I just freaked out a bit about how long we have to staythere.” Then she rested her forehead on her hands.
“About seven hours.”
With her eyes wide open she looked up at him. “What?”
“There is a merchant ship that always passes not too far from here,” Hepointed behind him. “And I’m sure they won’t going to toss us back to the sea.”
First, she could only blink, and needed a few seconds to be able to speakagain. “Why didn’t you tell me this before?
He smirked. “So about that future, can I ask what did you plan a few yearslater, I mean, I’m sure you thought about how to increase the population ofthis island.”
She didn’t say anything. She just picked up a mango and throw it at him.

nikolina: he takes her out on the ship, and takes her on deck, at the mast, at the helm, over his desk... everywhere...
So this took  me a while to figure out how to write (also I wasn’t sure if this was part of the sappy smut fest so I wrote it in between the others - because how else to relax than with nikolina amirite?) BUT here it is!! :D
Rated E ofc
Ships and Alina didn’t go well.
They simply didn’t.
It’s not that she got seasick, she simply… Didn’t like the instabilityof it all.
“Come now, Alina. I just finished this beauty. You said it yourself.”Nikolai opened his arms and twirled on the spot, drawing Alina’s attention tohis magnetic presence, instead of the ship.
Nikolai wasn’t lying, nor had she lied. It was a beauty. A small sailing ship fashioned in the style of abrig. Nikolai’s favourite ship. Of course he’d gotten himself his very ownone-man brig-like ship.
“It is a beauty, Nikolai. But I’m not going on its maiden voyage withyou. Oh! Stop with the pout, Nikolai Lantsov!” She let out in exasperation onceher best friend flashed his best pout.
“Come along, Alina. Let us go on this journey. You and I, and the sea.”He said, his voice stripped of all playful covers now, serious and soft. Hisplea was almost enough to have her say yes. Almost.
Alina sighed, “Nikolai, come on. You know how I feel about ships andwater. There is no way you’ll change my mind.”
He rose an eyebrow and a new spark twinkled in his eyes, “Is that adare?”
She stopped, “Oh no.” She knew that spark, all too well.
A devilish smirk grew on his lips, “Oh yes.”
--
Alina leaned on the railing, cursing Nikolai and his good looks and his waywith words and how easily he’d gotten her to pack and set off with him. Shesighed, her gaze drifting to him yet again. Who was she kidding? Nikolai hadlittle to do with her agreeing with this. Sure, his tickles attack had drawnthe yes out of her but…
The truth was that she’d agreed long before he’d even asked.
All because she was so head over heels with him. Nikolai could ask herto go live in a water well together and she would say yes without missing abeat.
“Alina, sunshine! Come here, come look at the sunset!” He called, excitement singing in his voice.
She rolled her eyes. It could be seen from her spot. If she straightenedup a little and rose her chin a tiny bit. Nikolai called her again, as if he’dread her thoughts. Or seen her struggling for a good view without moving.Defeated, she sighed and went to him.
“Come here, Alina.” He goaded her closer and stepped away from the helm, inviting her to take it. Alina followed him, equal parts tired of resisting hispull and dying to resist him yet again. Nikolai smiled when she took the helm,“That’s it, hands steady.” He leaned in. His breath tickled her ear and Alinatook a shaky breath, barely able to keep her hands from shaking when he coveredthem with his. “Now, look straight ahead.” Was it her or had his voice droppedjust a little?
Alina looked up and a gasp left her lips.
The sunset.
It was as though sunlight exploded on the horizon. Warm and deep shadesof gold and orange and honey, dripping over the sky and into the ocean, paintingit with every shade it had and some more. It was the most beautiful sunsetshe’d ever seen. “It’s beautiful…”
Nikolai hummed in agreement, “Indeed it is. And…” His body drew closer, his hands steadying hers, and she felt his warmth envelop her. Several beatswere skipped, her heart unable to function properly with him so close. Nikolaiwhispered, “So are you, sunshine. I hope you remember that.”
She closed her eyes. This was too much, she would die soon enough. Fromkeeping her distance, from denying her feelings, from denying this… This thingthat seemed to constantly be growing between them. Her voice was hoarse whenshe spoke, “Nikolai…”
“Yes?”
Yes… What was she going to say? She didn’t really know, did she? All sheknew was that Nikolai stood right behind her, close enough to touch yet keepinghis respectful distance. It drove her mad. Why didn’t he take a bold step? Whatwas he waiting for?
“Your call, Alina.”
She blinked, “What?”
He nuzzled his nose in her hair for the briefest of moments, as ifunable to stop himself from it, “You asked what was I waiting for…” He rasped,“Your call.”
“Oh.” She paused, realising this was it. “I want…” Her voice trembled, every fibre in her body lit up with his proximity, “I want you…” His handstightened, “To change my mind about ships and stuff.” She let out, a chucklealmost breaking through.
Nikolai dropped his head on her shoulder and started to shake. Shefrowned, what…? And then there it was, the sound. His laughter. Loud andcarefree. Vibrating through her, into her, aimed straight at her poor littleheart. “Oh saints, Alina.” He heaved, still laughing, “You’re amazing.”
“I know.”
“Oh yes, I know you know.” His voice changed and so did Alina’sheartbeat. “And how exactly do you want me to change your mind? If a sunset suchas this one hasn’t done the trick…” Oh saints, his voice was husky, so husky…
She could turn back, she could. It was so easy. And Nikolai wouldn’tfight her decision. It went against his own personality, because he respectedher enough to stand so close yet so far. So long her permission wasn’t voiced,Nikolai would do very little. Sometimes she hated this, how respectful he waswith her. Sometimes… Well, it was her own fault wasn’t it? Nikolai had stolenone kiss at Christmas and she’d given him hell for it. After that… No morestolen kisses, even if he never stopped teasing her.
“Nikolai…” She leaned back, dying to savour the feel of his body.
A hand of his dropped to her waist, fingers digging in ever so slightly. He pressed a kiss to her hair, “Yes, Alina? Tell me…”
“You’re so insufferable all the time…” She rasped.
His chuckle came out in a breath, “It riles you up so easily.”
“You’re the worst.”
“Maybe, but I love the way you roll your eyes while fighting that smileof yours that always,” he took a breath and placed his other hand on her waist,“Always makes everything better.”
She hummed, a little distracted with his hands, “What do you mean?” Shepushed a little and Nikolai groaned in reply just as she felt him going hardagainst her. A warmth spread between her legs, her body answering his.
“I love your smile, Alina. It’s pure sunshine for me.” He cursed underhis breath after she rolled her hips against his for a brief moment, “Saints,Alina… I can’t… You’ll be the death of me if you continue like this…”
“You love… my smile?” She was deep in this lustful haze that clouded hermind, Alina’s reactions were growing sluggish, her heart and body fighting fordominance. To react to his words or to react to his body?
“So much, my heart swells at the sight of it.” He paused. And then hepushed against her a little, drawing a surprised gasp out of her, “At the sightof you, actually. Alina…” His arms circled her waist completely and he nuzzledthe crook of her neck, “I want to kiss you, so much.”
“You already have…” Bedroom voice. On any other day she would havecringed at how obviously thirsty for him she was, but today? No filters, noholding back.
“I want to kiss you again…” Heamended, pushing away a few locks of hair to plant a soft kiss on her skin. Ashudder trickled down her spine and straight through all of her. “And again,”Another kiss, “And again,” And another, “And again…” His lips were right whereher blood drummed fast, pressing soft, feather-light kisses over and overagain. This was intoxicating, maddening, driving her over the edge withoutanything else other that a press of bodies and a handful of fantastic kisses.
Was this how Nikolai made out with someone? Was this how he began hisforeplay? Saints, just the thought of him doing any of this to anyone else hadher aching to break something.
“Then kiss me again, Nikolai…” She dropped her head back, inviting himfor more exploration, “And don’t stop.”
A breath, “Alina…” His voice was so soft, it drove her into opening hereyes.
Her heart, if it was still working, seemed to combust at the sight.Nikolai was so close, so close… His eyes seemed to be on fire. Sunset light hitthem with its very last strength, highlighting the deep browns into a magicalamber shade and bringing to life the deep greens, sparking them up so theylooked like crushed emeralds. His eyelashes were a deep gold, casting beautifulshadows over his skin. Up this close, Alina realised Nikolai had a faintsprinkle of freckles over the bridge of his nose, no doubt put there by theendless hours he spent under the sun. He was so beautiful. So unbelievablybeautiful…
Nikolai’s gaze pierced through hers, open and honest, taking away anybreath she might still have. And then it dropped, to her lips. He brought up ahand to cup her cheek, thumb tracing the lines of her lips before he leaned inand finally, at last, kissed her.
It was a moment held still, a breath waiting to be shared.
And then it was time moving, time rushing, time singing.
His lips moved over hers, pulling and pressing and pushing, plying hermouth open with silent pleas, drawing sounds out of her that Alina didn’t evenknow she had. His tongue was a soft temptation, moving with hers in a paradoxof a dance. It was sweet and dirty, a caress and a sexual tease. Alina hadalways watched his mouth from the corner of her eyes, always wondering if itwould be a pleasure to taste. Unsurprisingly, it was. A delicious nectar, actually.
A groan was spilled into her and Nikolai held her closer, the hand onher waist dropping lower as he blindly scrunched her dress in his fist. Alinastill held onto the helm, her hands rooted in place as she was kissed andtouched into oblivion. The hem of her dress grew shorter and shorter, until shefelt Nikolai’s fingertips caressing her skin, the touch tender and light. Hepulled away, his breath laboured and hot on her skin, “Saints, Alina… I feellike I could get drunk on you… It’s likely I already am…” He brushed his lipson hers, “I’m going too fast, I’m sorry… I didn’t think kissing you again wouldhave such an effect on me.”
She shook her head, or tried to, able to just make some patheticnegative sounds, “No, no… Don’t stop… Please.” She licked her lips, “You’re notgoing too fast, we just…” Her heart was beating so fast, her lungs couldn’tkeep up with it, “We just held back for too long. Please, Nikolai… Don’t stop.”
Hesitation held him still for a full heartbeat. Then… His hand movedhigher, uncertainty giving place to confidence. He brushed her panties and shedrew in a shuddered breath. Nikolai whispered, palm pressed against her, “Asyou wish, sunshine.” He slipped his hand under her panties and pressed anotherkiss to her gasping lips, “As you wish.”
The first touch was just a brush of his finger, a soft caress that drewa breathy moan out of her. Pleasure curved her lips and Nikolai kissed heragain, peppering her mouth with soft kisses, a paradox to the way his fingerslipped between her folds and teased her. She held tighter to the helm, knuckles white as she moved with his hand, gasping and moaning into his mouth, back arched against him. As the edge drew closer, their kisses grew moredesperate and Nikolai slipped another finger in and pumped faster. Alina brokethe kiss and threw her head back, mouth open as she moaned yes after yes, begging for the edge that seemed to refuse to come.
And then it did.
She bucked her hips fast, her body coming undone at the seams, her bloodigniting straight to ashes, her lungs collapsing on themselves.
A long moment passed, her breathing slowly returning to somethingremotely similar to a normal rhythm. Nikolai removed his hand and kissed hercheek, pressing his temple to her flushed skin.
“That was so good…” She rasped after a while, still safely tucked in hisembrace.
“Thank you, I do my best.” A smirk coated his words, yet Alina wascertain there was an undertone of surprise. As if he hadn’t expected her to saythis, as if he hadn’t expected the reactions he got. It seemed surprise was yetanother thing they shared.
“But I need more, Nikolai… I need you. I want you.” She said, her voiceraw and thick. Her eyes locked on his as she turned in his embrace and pushedaway his jacket, “I need all of it. Right now, or I might combust completely.”
Nikolai held her by the waist, forehead pressed to hers, “You keep sayingthose things and I won’t survive the night, Alina.”
“I won’t either, so let’s make the best of it.” And then she brought himdown.
Somewhere between this kiss and the next, Alina and Nikolai moved closerto the mast, her back now pressed against the wood as their kisses grew moreand more passionate.
As Nikolai took her through his endless supply of secret kisses – theone that made her shudder, the one that made her giggle, the one that made herheart flutter and sing and many, many others – Alina did quick job on hisclothes. Shirt, gone. Belt, gone. Pants… Zipper down, Alina slowly let go ofthem, biting her lip in anticipation as the sound of fabric falling to theground filled her ears. Nikolai groaned against the crook of her neck, hismouth busy with getting intimate with her shoulder.
Blindly, Alina brushed her hand over him. First, his chest, palms dyingto feel the highs and lows of his toned muscles. She moved down. Hard stomach, definedhipbones… Her fingers drew secret lines all over him, her mind memorizing everytrace, ever high, every low. She traced the seams of his boxers with afingertip, smiling like crazy when Nikolai cursed under his breath and wasforced to pause his kisses. That sound was incredible. So, she played. Sheplayed until nothing but broken sounds came out of him, until Nikolai waspractically begging for mercy, until she felt her panties soaking wet and sheknew she couldn’t wait any longer.
Panties gone, boxers gone, Nikolai hoisted her up by her thighs andAlina quickly locked them around him, a smile on her lips as he slowly easedinto her. “Finally…” she whispered, resting her temple against his.
A tiny smile danced on his lips, so unexpectedly shy, “I admit myfantasies involved a bed for our first time together, but you sound so… Happy.”He caressed her skin and shivers erupted from the spots his hands touched, electrifying her entire nervous system, “I can’t really complain, can I?”
She shook her head, “No. You can’t.” And then she shut him up, kissinghis smiling lips with all her might.
Nikolai began to move, rolling his hips so achingly slow at first thatAlina almost died with the anticipation. But soon his pace picked up, Alinasilently begging for more and more and more. Hands lost in his hair, Alina drewher nails down his nape, gasping and moaning his name every other heartbeat. Her heart was so full already, so full she swore it was close to spilling overand wash the decks with how much she cared for Nikolai, how much she… lovedhim.
“I… Oh...! Nikolai! I… I… Saints…” Her broken speech wove its way intotheir kisses, Alina’s heart dying to voice the truth. She took in a shudderedbreath, feeling her body once more close to combustion, “Nikolai… I… I loveyou…!”
It was more of a cry than the breathy confession she had planned, thewords coming out just as a thrust of his threw her over the edge. It didn’tmatter how she’d said them, what mattered was that she had, at last. And to hersurprise, it threw Nikolai off his rails, rhythm failing for moment, before hetoo came undone, hips bucking hard against hers.
Holding tight to her… her friend, her lover… Her Nikolai. Her Nikolai…Alina nuzzled her nose against the crook of his neck, her body gone from thisreality after the best sex she had ever had in her whole life.
Nikolai’s breathing was still laboured when he spoke, his voice sotender and shaky she swore she had broken him with just her words. Hewhispered, “You do, sunshine?” She nodded, her voice gone together with herbody, “Saints… I love you too, Alina. I love you too, so much… So, so much.”
She leaned back. She wanted to see his face, she wanted to see if hislove was as readable in his eyes as she was certain hers was on her eyes. Andthere it was, a shine that ignited from within, filling her heart with evenmore warmth and fuzzy contents. It spilled then, washing over her andswallowing the world whole.
A smile light up her face, “I guess… I guess my opinion on sailing haschanged now. Congratulations, Nikolai.”
He dropped his face and laughter shook him whole once more, “Thank you, sunshine. I did my best.”
An agreeing hum met his words, “And I hope you keep on doing it until weget back.”
He rose an eyebrow, “Bed?” He looked over his shoulder before returninga playful gaze to her, “Deck…?”
She laughed, “I think bed sounds very nice right now. Deck… later.”
“As you wish, my love.”

Stars glittered in the night sky, an endless deep black blanket thatcovered the world as the night stretched on. Alina watched them from hercocoon, the back window a perfect view to the night outside. Nikolai playedwith her hair, lazy strokes that started at her crown and went all the way tothe very ends, the tender touch sending her into cardiac arrest, over and overagain. As if the long moments they’d spent together in bed hadn’t alreadykilled her.
Hundreds of fairy lights hanging from the ceiling and around the bed’srailings and wherever Nikolai had found safe spots to hang them, their warmglow enveloping them.
She turned in his embrace and met him with a raised eyebrow, “Did youget these because of me?”
Nikolai glanced at the lights hanging just above their heads, “You couldsay that.” He looked back at her, “Do you remember when I asked you what kindof lighting I should have in my room?”
Yes, she did. It had been months ago, but the memory was still fresh inher mind. She nodded, “Yeah, I said that if it were my room, I’d go overboardand fill it with fairy lights.”
His smile was toothy and borderline adorable, “That’s what I did.” Helaced their fingers together, “I got all these lights just because of what yousaid. So that whenever I was away from you, I could surround myself with… you.”He shrugged, the gesture and his blush signs of that secret shyness of his.
Alina rolled her eyes, “I’m not a light bulb.”
“No,” he conceded, “But it was your idea and you are my sunshine Alina. It was as close as I could get to having you here with me. Well,” He leaned inand kissed her knuckles, “Until now, of course.”
The kiss sent butterflies rushing through her bloodstream and into herheart, fluttering to life in the span of a tiny kiss. She rasped, “Did you… Didyou plan this?”
He paused, lips already halfway to another kiss, “Everything thathappened? Oh no. I did have hopes for a kiss before we returned, but…” A chuckleshook him, “I didn’t really expect much beyond that. Certainly not whathappened on deck…”
A blush tinged her cheeks, “Yeah, me either.” She pressed her legstogether and hissed, “Saints dammit!”
“What is it?”
“Bathroom, I really need it right now.”
He laughed, “First door to your right when you leave the bedroom. Door, not room. That one is my little study.” He called for her as she untangledherself from the sheets, “It has a desk.” She paused, momentarily forgettingher rush. Desk. That voice.
“Fine, I’ll meet you there.”
“I didn’t mean now!” He called after her, his laughter trailing herheels.
“Well, now I really am in the mood, so you better be there!” Shescreamed, not even bothering with closing the door.

The rest of their weekend was spent between cuddling and making lovewherever and whenever. On deck, against the mast, bed, desk, kitchen. Alinaswore this weekend had loosened all of her self-control, the young woman unableto stop herself from kissing Nikolai and savouring every little bit of him thatshe could savour. His arms were heaven, his tongue an endless pool of love and sin.
So happy and so in love, could anyone really blame her for enjoyingevery moment she had with Nikolai?
Maybe her past self, for taking so long in admitting the truth toherself.
