The wip I've been slowly chipping away at is for Shepherds of Haven. It's between Red and my MC, Kyrahlise (said Kira-lease), or as Red calls her, Kyrah. They went to a secret Mage school together during their teens – magic is outlawed, hence why the school is hidden. Kyrahlise and Red were friends for years then dated for several months before they graduated and went their separate ways. When they meet again years later in the game, those feelings start to get rekindled. It's based on the prompt: five times MC broke Red's heart, and one time they didn't. Please note: There are significant spoilers for the romance route between Red and an MC who’s his ex. As well as some minor spoilers for the Patreon Alpha build of the game. I put my answers under the cut in case you don’t want to get any spoilers. Fair warning, this is fucking long! 1. Kyrahlise knew Red was a player – they’d been really good friends for five years before they dated. She knew exactly what he was like, and how his ‘relationships’ never lasted more than a few weeks. So she was aware of what she was signing up for when she responded positively to him when he ‘suddenly’ started flirting with her. It wasn’t that she didn’t want more than a casual/physical relationship with him. She knew Red didn’t want anything else, so it didn’t even occur to her to hope for something deeper with him. Did she ever question why their relationship lasted months instead of weeks or why he never ended things with her before they graduated? Nope, girl was just enjoying the ride for as long as it lasted. (This is a very condensed version of the word-of-god canon way the MC felt about their teenage relationship with Red. For context with heavy spoilers, see this ask.)

When Red finally pieced together that he’d had a low-key crush on Kyrah since they first met at 14, and started flirting with her to see if she was interested in him that way – well, it was so easy for him to fall in love. Factor in all of the qualities that made them such great friends, and the level of emotional intimacy between them that he didn’t have with anyone else he’d dated before – he couldn’t help falling in love with her. (Did he tell her this? No, because he was a dumbass who thought it was obvious he was in love with her.) Fast forward almost a decade with no contact between them. She shows up out of the blue, and she’s still the same Kyrah he was in love with all those years ago. Older, wiser, a little calmer, more confident, and somehow even hotter than when she was 20. So of course he can’t help but fall in love with her again when she treats him the same as before, and even flirts a little. When Kyrah left, Red was heartbroken. He thought their relationship could weather anything, but she ended things so casually and took off after graduation. Red was definitely fragile during that time where it still felt so raw. Not that he let anyone see how torn up he was about it for those first few months. Thankfully he got over the heartbreak, so it’s not like he carried around pain or resentment towards her for years. 4. The Loneliest Time by Carly Rae Jepsen ft. Rufus Wainwright

Shortly after being reunited Red said to Kyrah: "It– almost feels as if a piece of me was missing all that time, and I didn't even realize it. And now it– you– are back again. And all feels right with the world." He may not be thinking about rekindling things right away, but it doesn't take him long for those feelings to start creeping back in. Though in my mind, it’s a lot more than missing their romantic relationship. They were really close friends for years before they dated. Despite how friendly Red is, he never had a lot of close friends. Losing one of the few friends he cherished was hard, and he missed Kyrah a lot. 5. Kyrahlise hates being seen as The Hero of Haven. She doesn’t regret the actions that earned her that title, because she wants to use her powers and skills to make the world a better and safer place. It doesn’t matter if people expect more from her than she can give because of her reputation. Or if they think the stories about her are exaggerated so they underestimate her. Either way she feels like a legend, a tool, or an idea when around people who don’t know her. But Red sees her. He was there for her when she was a traumatized 14 year old trying to heal from what happened on her 13th birthday. He was there when she was dealing with the culture shock of being raised by isolationist Elves, then spending a year trying to get by in a scary Norm city on her own, then thrust into a Mage school where she didn’t know anyone or the customs. And he was there for her after what happened in Heth Macoll and in Wallmire. Red knows who she is and doesn’t expect her to be some legend. He just wants to be with Kyrah, the woman. To her, Red feels like a safe haven.* *Pun unintentional, but it’s too good to change, lol!
