Well, since I’m bored and also extremely excited for MHRise, I’ve decided to air out my opinions on the officially confirmed roster for Rise (as well as Rathalos and Rathian because come on, they’re gonna be in the game.).
I won’t be talking about leaks, cause I haven’t looked at them, but I’ll probably update this post with any new reveals from the remaining weapon trailers.
Returning Monsters
Kulu-Ya-ku — My birb boy! I’ve gotta be honest, Kulu was one of my favourites from World’s early game so I’m really pleased to see it return for Rise. The armour and weapons are nice too, so overall this is a good omen for the game for me.
Pukei Pukei — I’m fine with this one! Pukei was never my favourite, but I also love its derpy nature, and the armours good so I’m glad to see it.
Jyuratodus — Why Jyura. Just, why. I don’t hate it, I’m just so violently indifferent to this monster. Probably the most forgettable monster in world to me alongside Lavasioth. At least it’s armour looks good.
Anjanath — Nice! Anja’s a fun fight, and and cuts an imposing figure for a fairly early game monster, so it definitely leaves an impression. I would have to say though, the number of World monsters so far either means we’re having a rather large roster(good!), or a lot of the roster is World returnees(bad!).
Tobi Kadachi — Again, another fun and memorable early game World monster. I really look forward to Tobi’s weapons getting a redesign (I’m pretty sure they said they’re redesigning world weapons, but leaving the armours as is?) and also to seeing how it functions on the new maps, it’s pretty arial which should be fun with the wire bug.
Khezu — Whyyy. Why do the devs love you so much, you slimy little bugger. I’d have been happy never seeing you in another Monster Hunter game again. And you don’t even have the redeeming qualities of nice looking gear.
Rathalos and Rathian — Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I really don’t care for either of the Raths. Their fights aren’t particularly memorable and their subspecies and variants are utterly infuriating, but they’re iconic at this point so we’re not going to go without them. Nice gear at least.
Arzuros — Eh, if I’m completely honest Arzuros is a very forgettable monster to me, though I fought it a fair few times in GU just cause I liked its armour. Same will probably go for Rise, though maybe it’ll grow on me.
Royal Ludroth — I’m 50/50 on whether I’m excited or not for Ludroth, on one hand I really like it’s design, on the other hand I found it’s fight pretty annoying. Maybe he wirebug will change that though, so for now I’m putting it in the “excited” camp.
Great Wroggi — I can’t really say anything about Wroggi as I’ve never fought it, but I will say that I usually find poison monsters the least annoying of all of the status monsters. Also, it’s armour is incredible, so that alone justifies its inclusion.
New Monsters
Great Izuchi — Probably the least interesting of the the currently announced new monsters, and even then I still think it’ll be a pretty decent fight. The armour and weapons don’t interest me though so unless they have great skills it’ll probably be one of the one and done monsters.
Tetranodon — Looks pretty fun actually, though I do wish the female armour got the same full face helmet as the males (of course, that’s never gonna happen is it). Not massively interesting but it’s attacks being modelled after sumo is a nice touch with it being Kappa inspired.
Aknosom — Looks very nice! It’s design and especially its move set are very visually appealing to me, and it’s gear is also very much a Knight aesthetic, so yep, pretty excited for this one!
Somnacanth — Love the design, love the armour, love the weapons. I am, however, slightly worried it’ll be a nuisance to fight. How much I end up liking it will probably depend on how much it spams that sleep breath.
Bishaten — Definitely the new monster I’m most excited about so far. Great design, interesting move set, cool as hell armour and weapons. Really looking forward to getting to fight this one, hopefully it’s in the demo.
Magnamalo — Obviously I can only really talk about Magnamalo from a design point of view because we know nothing about it, but on that front I think it’s excellent. Again I do kind of wish the female armour got the full face helmet of the males but hey, no exposed thighs, so that’s a win in my book. Overall the gear and monster look incredibly slick and I look forward to learning more about its moveset, hopefully soon.
Well, this ended up longer than expected. Overall most of the monsters revealed so far i’m happy with, with one very notable exception (goddamn Khezu).
As I said at the start, I’ll probably update this with new reveals once they drop, if I can be bothered or actually remember to do so.
