That Ned’s ghost and bones are in a constant state of restlessness after his death is so interesting to me. We haven’t heard much of Ned’s bones after Lady Catelyn sent Hallis Mollen north with them, but then Barbrey Dustin in ADWD says that she intends to block them from reaching Winterfell, and the reason for doing so is tied around her husband dying at the Tower of Joy and not returning home.
But what is more revealing is immediately after his death, Ned’s ghost gets to the crypts and wanders about restlessly, which is felt by the three Stark boys who have the power of prophetic dreams: Jon who constantly looks for his father in this “underworld” is pulled into searching for Ned before his execution, Rickon is called to the crypts and has a mysterious conversation with Ned where he promises to come back (but how will he be back if he’s dead?), and then there’s Bran who gets to have a more substantial conversation with his dead father’s ghost as he speaks sadly about Jon.
We know that even before death, Ned was surrounded by a sense of guilt and shame because of Jon, and he even expressed a deep desire to speak with the boy. Accounting for all these, it starts to look like Ned’s restlessness, dead or alive, is deeply rooted in the secret of Jon’s parentage and can only be alleviated once he confronts Jon about this truth. That might explain why Jon is constantly looking for Ned in the crypts and why he’s afraid of what he might find down there (and not who). So perhaps Ned’s bones can only be laid to rest once his ghost sets things right with Jon.

I see where the 'dragons are nukes' people are coming from in terms of the total devastation dragons are capable of in battle and in the hands of those that want to use them in such a way.
However, dragons are clearly meant to symbolize more than just their raw power in wartime. dragons are fire made flesh, dragons are Summer, dragons are flight and freedom, dragons are playful and warm, dragons are life in defiance of winter. dragons are the strength needed to break chains, topple corruption, and burn evil itself. dragons are flaming swords and lightbringers. dragons are loyalty and protectiveness. dragons are passion and mystery and magic.
dragons are the opposite end of the magical spectrum to the others.
and dragons are, above all else, lizard cats that like to bask in the sun and get scratches on the underside of their chins.

always thinking about young cersei lannister in casterly rock! the walls the same colour as her hair. her eyes the same colour as the hangings on the walls. her golden lannister mother dead and the only people left her golden lannister family. the bards playing the rains of castamere every other month under her windows. the crest embroidered into her clothes and stamped into the doors and engraved into the pommels of her guards. the sandstone building up on the hill looking down at its people and sandstone cersei never emerging from it -- golden bird in golden cage becoming golden cage...her blood the same colour as her house!!!!

reading a game of thrones and fuck. robb doesn’t get to be a narrator (he’s lyanna stark he’s the dead girl in the pool he’s the narrative’s most special ghost) but he barely has to. we’re watching him from every point of view but his own. he’s the lannisters’ second thought, a teenager pretending to be the man his father was. he’s jon’s best friend, his older brother, the guy he compares all the others to, snowflakes melting in his hair forever. he’s catelyn first son, it was just the two of them for so long, her boy who looks like her but takes after his father so much it aches, and yet is never like him quite enough, a boy soldier leading men to war when he can barely grow a beard. in private, he listens to his mother’s lessons about command as if she was a school teacher, blushes when he gets the answers wrong, then he earns the lords’ respect in public, like he is older than his years. her son slipping between her fingers when he’s right here.
but most of all in the first book we see him through bran. he’s lord robb, who commands his men and fights wildlings and only has to say one word for his wolf to rip an attacker’s fingers off. he’s robb the brother, who comes into bran’s bedroom in the evening to cry because he’s scared, actually, he’s so scared that he’s going to die, that he has no right to order all these people to die for him, that his father isn’t here and he went south and starks never come back from the south, and now he’s the fifteen year old boy on the throne of a war hero with no idea what he is really doing. he’s scared and he does it anyway. ned tells us very early in the book, after the execution, that it’s the only way to be brave and we don’t know yet that he’s talking about his son. robb haunts the narrative and he’s not even dead yet

It's so funny bc I thought I was DONE with GoT/ASOIAF (at least until TWoW came out), and Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik had to center the Dance around a Yuri fallout basically, and my content-starved queer heart couldn't resist that shit.
You give me a princess who struggles with gender roles, more specifically, the ones that are set to her as a woman and the ones set to her by being heir to the throne. A woman who's walking the line between her duties. She is a woman with no true freedom, even though she's a Princess and next in line for the throne, always having to live up to the expectations set by the men around her.
Then, you have her former "best friend," who's been groomed by both her father and the King used as a pawn in political games, and ended up isolated as a result. She's also an extremely religious woman who's been repressing her true desires before she even realized what those desires really were. She's a woman with no true agency, even though she's Queen.
And to top it all off, they had a great relationship. They were there for each other. They confided in each other. And then, their relationship fell apart because of the ambition of the men who were supposed to have their best interests at heart but only had theirs guiding their actions.
They grow apart and are pitted against each other. Each of them defends their family fiercely, which, of course, causes conflict because, again, the men who should be taking care of them are selfish bastards. Then, for the briefest of moments, they manage to get close again. Not like before, because too much has gone down between them. But, of fucking course, Viserys has to die, but not before speaking about an ambiguous prophecy about who's to sit on the Iron Throne (too many Aegons, man), and of fucking course that opens the gates to a civil war, which, of course, takes 0.1 seconds to go from bad to worse and then all Hell breaks loose, making it impossible for these two women, who had once been the closest two people could be, ever to reconcile.
So yeah, Condal and Sapochnik have me hooked on toxic, doomed-by-the-narrative Yuri.
I'm just here for the ride.

Is it Rhaenyra's fault that women are not allowed to rule?
well i can try to be as measured as possible here: No. Absolutely not. westerosi society is... yknow... a hyperpatriarchal feudal monarchy, it was that way long before the conquest and it still is long after rhaenyra's death. whatever might be speculated about valyrian gender roles differing from westerosi ones, aegon still makes himself king instead of visenya, even though she's older (also, yknow, not gonna give the slave society props for being progressive). rhaenys' inheritance (through laenor) is passed over by a huge margin by the great council (jaehaerys himself having no faith in female inheritance rights, considering he felt the need to call the great council over it in the first place). there are very few scenarios where i can imagine westeros was ever going to be conducive towards a ruling queen.
patriarchy isn't the "fault" of "bad examples" of women in power. not to mention the history we see in f&b is, yknow, fairly unreliable. it seems fairly clear cut that her government made some extremely bad ruling decisions— treatment of smallfolk leading to the dragonpit, etc— and in this case it feels prudent to mention her disinheritance of the rosby/stokeworth female heirs in favour of their younger male relatives. that's a huge problem for rhaenyra considering her rule relies on female inheritance! however, she also... was subject to overrule by an otherwise male council, and subject to the conditional support of mostly male lords. asoiaf has always complicated the idea that monarchy is solely the will of the ruler and not subject to external pressures. tbh, it complicates the ideas of "agency" and "fault" in general— characters are defined and caged by a society with deeply entrenched ideals and roles. i think she's a tragic character; wanting so badly to do what's right, believing very sincerely that her rule is just. but the series is very clear that no matter our best intentions these systems of power are poisonous! what rule is ever just? any justification for war falls apart at the horror of its human cost!
was she a totally good queen making perfect astute political decisions, slandered by the histories? i don't really think so. was her rule ever meaningfully trying to institute feminist policies? No. do i think that, post-dance, people may have used rhaenyra's alleged misrule as justification for passing over female inheritance? yeah, sure, probably. but that would never be the sole justification. this is a systemic issue and not a personal one! One Perfect Woman is not going to topple patriarchy overnight!

I wonder if Sansa never mentioning/thinking of Old Nan across all the books goes in hand with her inability to comprehend things for their ugly reality, reverting to pretty songs and the ignorance they signify instead.
Meanwhile the other Stark POVs are all thinking of Old Nan's stories as recent as ADwD. Arya recounts her stories about Hardhome when apprenticing with the HOBAW and providing information about the wildlings, Jon thinks about the ice dragons from Old Nan's tales, and Bran likens her stories with the ones shared by Bloodraven.
Old Nan contextualizes their settings. Arya thinks of her stories about Harrenhal when she is imprisoned there, and Jon thinks of her stories when he tells Ygritte about Queenscrown being named from Queen Alysanne on her visit to the Wall, and the same place for Bran and the Reeds. What more, Old Nan prepares them for monsters and magic.
Old Nan's stories (as remembered by Bran, Arya, and Jon) are brutal and terrifying. They are of frightful and oft forgotten things. They memorialize that which others may wish to forget. Juxtapose this to Sansa, who does not once think of Old Nan or recall any of her stories, despite her obvious love for 'the songs.' Clearly Sansa only cares about the romantic, happy songs, or at least the ones that make tragedy pretty. The naive ones that never confront the ugly side of things; not the Others, not the North far beyond the Wall, not the magic of the First Men, all of which the other Starks are connected to one way or another by ADwD. Sansa, who represses and revises and romanticizes (see: the unkiss, Arya as the sole source of blame for Lady's death, poisoning Robin), cannot fathom the horrors that are due to arrive in all their apocalyptic doom, which is another reason why she is entirely unqualified to have any leadership role in the face of this enemy. It's in the same vein as Arya's crypt story with Jon scaring the young kids; Sansa's instinct is to run from the supernatural.

Jon’s immediate reaction to R+L=J is basically him spending all his years insecure about his bastard status and carrying the weight of being the one stain on Ned Stark’s honor, only to hear that he wasn’t Ned’s source of shame at all and going “you know what, as long as I get to be yours, I’d rather be your bastard”

honestly the revisionist history of people acting like fandom loved Cersei during game of thrones is so??? Cersei was fucking despised when game of thrones was airing. “I’d like alicent if she was like cersei” no you wouldn’t! Because y’all didn’t like Cersei in the first place. it also makes me question whether they understand Cersei’s character at all, because they’re objecting to hotd depicting alicent as a victim of her father and her husband, y’know the way Cersei was a victim of her father and her husband. like the number of comments that are like “we just want women that are pure evil from birth like Cersei” are just really weird and bioessentialist and an inaccurate assessment of cersei. and look I think it’s fine to dislike the choices they made in adapting alicent, but so much of the discourse I see about it is so dishonest. and this isn’t me saying that I think team green stans are any better than team black stans, I find both team green stans and team black stans are awful and annoying and gross.
I'm not gonna add anything because my field of fucks to give for asoiaf&related fandoms is pretty barren, and I don't really want to invite further discourse about it into my life, but. agreed. 1000%.
