hide & seek
Youngjae | 2288 words the other present for my cute youngjae anon! She comes home after work to find her puppy missing, so she enlists the help of her neighbor to find him.
It was later than usual when she got home that night; long day at work, followed by a work dinner, and she’d had to pick up a couple things at the grocery on her way back. She trudged up the stairs, bags in hand, wondering why she always ended up out too late on the nights where all she wanted to do was sleep.
She put up her groceries and collapsed on the couch in her living room, letting the stillness seep into her bones. She felt heavy, and she’d never been more glad to see the weekend.
It was then that the blissful quiet of her apartment finally hit her as odd.
She shot up, peeking over the back of the couch, her eyes darting around the room. Usually, when she came home, her puppy would be at her feet immediately, running circles around her and barking happily. Peanut loved being wherever she was, so the fact that she’d been home for a solid thirty minutes and he was nowhere to be found was bizarre. And worrisome.
She drug herself off the couch, making a circle around her apartment, looking in closets and behind closed doors and under every blanket she had. No Peanut.
She didn’t know what to do. She stood for a moment in the middle of her living room with tears gathering in the corner of her eyes. This had never happened before. Where was he?
Swallowing the lump that had formed in her throat, she squared her shoulders. Maybe he’d slipped out when she came home, or when she left that morning. He was bound to be around the apartment complex somewhere, right?
She scrambled to put on her shoes, grabbed her phone and her keys, and let the door slam behind her on her way out. She was about to dart down the stairs when she paused, glancing back at her neighbor’s door. Maybe he saw something. A little hesitatingly, she approached his apartment, ringing the doorbell and hoping that she wasn’t disturbing him too much.
When the door opened a minute later, she suddenly wished she hadn’t decided to ask.
For some reason, she’d always imagined him in printed pajamas, his hair ruffled and messy, with slippers and plushes, but her neighbor was standing in front of her in just an old pair of sweatpants, revealing a toned chest and a tattoo on either bicep, and her face grew very, very hot.
“S-sorry, Youngjae, I didn’t mean to, um, wake you--”
He waved away her comment sleepily, rubbing his eye with the back of his fist. “Don’t worry about it; I wasn’t asleep, just playing games.” When she didn’t say anything for a moment, he blinked. “Did...you need something?”
She shook her head quickly to clear it, blinking rapidly. “Right! Um, Peanut’s missing. I don’t know where...he’s not at home and I was going to go looking for him and I was wondering if you’d...seen him anywhere. Or heard anything.” She swallowed hard for the second time so far that evening, and she tried to keep her eyes trained on his face instead of his chest.
Youngjae’s eyes widened. “Peanut’s missing?”
They’d been neighbors for nearly a year, and were good friends. Youngjae had been with her when she’d gotten Peanut, which she’d decided to do after spending so much time babysitting his puppy, Coco.
She nodded. “Yeah.”
“Just a sec, I’ll help you look.”
“Oh, no, Youngjae, you don’t have to--!”
But he waved her inside his apartment, cutting off her attempts to protest. “Let me grab a jacket. I want to help.” Before she could protest, he disappeared down the hall to his bedroom, leaving her in the entryway.
She was just beginning to weigh the merits of darting out of his door before he came back when he reappeared, tugging a pink hoodie down over a white t-shirt. He slipped on his favorite white tennis shoes before straightening.
“Let’s go find a puppy!”
A hint of a smile flickered across her lips and she nodded, leading him back out into the hallway.
“When did you last see him?” Youngjae kept his eyes peeled as he followed her down the stairwell, looking for any trace of the little white ball of fluff in question.
She bit her lip, trying to think. She’d given him breakfast that morning, which he’d definitely eaten, and he’d given her the usual bark goodbye before she left. She couldn’t remember if he’d been there when she came home.
“This morning, I think. I don’t know. I was tired when I got home so I wasn’t paying much attention, but I don’t think he was there. He wouldn’t have left the apartment if I was there.”
They looked through the apartment building, making their way through every hallway and looking around the lobby, but they couldn’t find any trace of the puppy. Youngjae glanced at her; her face had darkened with each empty floor and she was left looking now like she might cry.
He reached for her hand, holding it tightly as he pulled her through the front doors. “Maybe he’s outside around the building. Or at the park down the street!” When she didn’t respond, he squeezed her hand. “We’ll find him.”
She fidgeted, shoving her other hand in the pocket of her hoodie. “I know. I’m just… he’s never done this before and he’s never been out by himself at night. I’m worried.” She gently tugged her hand out of his and slipped it into her pocket as well, curling in on herself as they walked around the building.
With no sign of the puppy, they started down the street toward the small park a few blocks away. They’d taken Coco and Peanut to the park together a few times, so they were both hoping that they’d find him there. They split up, Youngjae walking through one half while she walked through the other.
Youngjae was just about to give up on his half when he saw what he thought was a tuff of white fur under a bench. Immediately alert, he crouched down and poked his head under the bench; when he saw the shivering ball tucked away in the corner, he grinned.
“Peanut!”
The dog twitched a little at the sound of his name, his ears perking up. When he lifted his head and saw a familiar face, he shot to his feet, bumping into Youngjae’s legs in his excitement. Youngjae just laughed as the puppy pawed at his shins.
“So this is where you’ve been!” He clicked his tongue, scooping the dog up in his hand and holding him close to his chest. “Don’t run off anymore. She’s been really worried about you!”
“Youngjae! Youngjae, did you see anything? I couldn’t… PEANUT!”
She ran, skidding to a halt next to Youngjae and cupping Peanut’s small face in her hands, scratching his cheeks. “Oh my god you little butt I was so scared don’t ever run off like that again!” She pressed her face into Peanut’s fur for a moment before beaming up at Youngjae.
“You found him!”
“Hiding under a bench.” Youngjae laughed, transferring the dog to her arms. “Probably got confused and couldn’t find his way home.”
She squeezed her puppy tightly as they started back toward the apartment building. “Seriously, oh my god, thank you so much, Youngjae, I never would have...I was panicking. I wouldn’t have been able…”
Youngjae smiled, ruffling her hair playfully as he shrugged. “I know how much you care about him. I’m happy I could help!”
When they got to their floor, Youngjae grabbed her elbow as she turned toward her own apartment. “Wanna come over for a bit?” he blurted out, and she thought she saw a bit of red in his cheeks. “Peanut could...hang out with Coco. We could watch a movie or something. To. Relax?”
Searching for her puppy had buzzed energy into her that she thought was long gone, so she nodded. “Yeah, that sounds good.”
Her smile made Youngjae feel warm.
---
Youngjae’s apartment was a mirror image of hers, but messier; he just had more stuff. He tossed some pillows in the floor to make room on the couch as Peanut slipped out of her arms. The puppy immediately bounded to Coco and they raced off together, pouncing on each other and chasing after the dog toys laying around.
She rummaged through his pile of movies as he made popcorn and poured drinks. By the time he was done, she’d picked one and was settled back on the couch, waiting for him before she clicked ‘play.’
He flopped down next to her, passing her the bowl of popcorn as movie started. “Want some?”
She grabbed a handful, eating a couple of pieces before peering over at him curiously. It took him a minute to notice, but, when he did, he made a face.
“What?”
She scooted back a little, holding up a piece of popcorn. He groaned.
“Noooo.”
“Yes!” She tossed it at him, laughing when he didn’t come anywhere close to catching it. He pouted.
“I wasn’t ready!”
“Then get ready!” She held up another, waiting until he had his mouth open to chuck it at him, but he missed again; this time it hit his cheek. He whined and she threw another, and another, until, in his increasingly-desperate attempts to catch the popcorn in his mouth, he lost his balance and crashed in a heap on the floor. She burst into giggles, trying to sputter out some sort of apology as she grabbed his arm and helped him back on the couch.
“That hurt!” He wiggled his shoulders, rubbing the back of his head. “Whyyyy’d you doooo thaaaaat?”
“It wasn’t like I meant to make you fall!” She tried to suppress her smile, but it seemed permanently etched into her features.
He whacked her arm, switching to her back as she attempted to squirm away and, before she knew what was happening, she’d fallen off the couch, right onto the pile of pillows Youngjae had thrown down earlier.
“Are you okay??” His face appeared over hers, obviously concerned. “I didn’t--”
She waved away his apology, her laughter still ringing throughout the room. When Youngjae realized she wasn’t going to stop laughing anytime soon, he slid off the couch and onto the floor by her. When, breathless and exhausted, she finally stopped, she slid her head onto his thigh, using him as a pillow when she turned her attention back to the television.
Youngjae’s hand absentmindedly drifted to her hair, fingers twisting into it and rubbing against her scalp. It wasn’t a new concept; she loved it when people played with her hair and he’d done it before on movie nights.
Coco and Peanut came back into view; Coco climbed into her dog bed, squishing over to the side to make room when Peanut followed her up. They bickered with each other playfully until they were settled, and they quickly fell asleep, curled up together.
She sighed, the sight of cuddly puppies and the way his fingers combed through her hair making her drowsy. Being drowsy and warm and feeling very thankful made her feel safe, and, before she knew it, her usually internal thoughts slipped past her filter. “You know, your girlfriend’s really lucky, Youngjae.”
“I don’t have one.”
She snuck a glance up at him; he was staring at the tv screen but that pink dusting across his cheeks was back. She reached up, poking his arm.
“Would you like to?”
His eyes snapped down to her face; his fingers froze in her hair. After a long moment of silence, he swallowed. “You’re not joking?”
“Not even a little bit.”
“Then yes, absolutely, thank god.”
She laughed again, snuggling into him again as his fingers went back to threading through her hair. “Okay good, because I’d really like to be the lucky one.”
“You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to ask you out.”
She pouted. “And why haven’t you?”
“Honestly I didn’t think you’d say yes. And I like being your friend. I didn’t wanna mess that up.”
She giggled, the sound coming out muffled and lazy. “I can’t even say anything cuz that’s why I never brought it up either.”
This time he laughed, hitting her shoulder gently. “What happened today then?”
“Puppies looked cuddly. Made me think about curling up in bed with you and I have a tendency to say things I normally wouldn’t when I get sleepy, I’m sorry.”
“I like it when you have no filter!” he protested playfully, tugging her up until she obliged, sitting in between his legs and leaning back against his chest as his arms wound around her waist. He propped his chin up on her shoulder. “You wanna go curl up in bed?”
“Youngjae, we just decided to be a couple like ten minutes ago.”
“Yeah, but we’ve been friends for like a year so that should count for something.”
“I’m too tired to move.”
“Curl up on couch?”
She patted his thighs gently, then crawled over to the puppies, giving them each a kiss on the head before she dove for his fluffy, oversized couch. He grinned at her antics, pushing himself up off the floor and flopping backwards onto the couch, letting her lay her head in his lap, back to the position they’d first been in.
“Thanks again for helping me find Peanut.”
“Thanks again for having no filter.”
“You’re so dumb,” she laughed, squirming when he poked her side playfully.
“But you like me anyway!”
His sunshine grin lit up the dark room and she couldn’t help but smile back.
“Yeah. I do.”
