hey this is gonna sound weird but I got back into spn VERY RECENTLY and I want to draw something for Nov 5th (used to do spn fanart way back in the day) but I haven't seen a bunch of the eps from the last few seasons (post S11). I don't have time to rewatch them all before the 5th, do you have a list of eps I should prioritize? Also I'm open to concepts/ideas for the art, I'm good at realism mostly. thank u sooooo much for ur help but also I blame u and the hellers in general for pulling me back in so the art is gonna be dedicated to u guys
hey, that's awesome!! i'm very glad you're back!! here's some episodes you might want to cram in before nov. 5th, from s12 onward! bolded are, in my opinion, essential in terms of understanding either the plot or the fandom (’C’ for ‘cule as in desticule) but of course i’ll advise that you read the plot summaries for any eps you can’t watch, including those that aren’t listed!!
s12e1 — keep calm and carry on : first ep of the season, i assume this would be easiest to start with so you can recall s11, and also just so you can get the gist of where the season will be headed. [PLOT]
s12e8 — LOTUS : introduces you to kelly kline. it's not my favorite and it's a bucklemming ep but plot-wise it might be important to know who kelly is, though tbh you can just read the synopsis and you should be fine. [PLOT]
s12e10 — lily sunder has some regrets : just a genuinely great episode! lots of cas background info and dean/cas moments [C]
s12e12 — stuck in the middle with you : davy perez ep!! cas says i love you!! sorta plot-heavy i GUESS? but if you want destiel angst then this is for you. it's mostly about the angst. [C]
s12e19 — the future : really important in terms of jack [PLOT]
s12e23 — all along the watchtower : season finale in which Very Significant things happen. s13 picks up right from where this leaves off. beginning of the widower arc. [PLOT, C]
s13e1 — lost and found : again, first ep of s13, lots of destiel angst (beautiful beautiful angst. the jacting joices....superb) [PLOT, C]
s13e4 — the big empty : cas!!! answers the question of what happened to him. [PLOT]
gonna go ahead and mention here that in order to watch s13e6 you should probably watch, like. the last ten minutes of s13e5, because again, ep 6 picks up right where ep 5 leaves off.
s13e6 — tombstone : destiel must-watch and end of the widower arc. also significant in terms of jack's development [PLOT, C]
s13e10 — wayward sisters : read the synopsis of ep 9 beforehand though if you want to get a background on kaia. [PLOT, C]
s13e16 — scoobynatural : 'nuff said. [C]
s13e19 — funeralia : not necessary but there’s a good amt. of rowena and cas in this ep so <3 [C]
s13e23 — let the good times roll : season finale, lots of stuff happens plot-wise [PLOT]
s14e1— stranger in a strange land : “i thought you two were joined at the—you know. everything.” really a slow ep tbh, but read the synopsis [C]
s14e3 — the scar : dean is back! there is a scene bt dean/cas in which the score makes me lose my goddamn mind. [PLOT, C]
s14e4 — mint condition : not essential, but a favorite. you’ll especially want to watch it if you’re a dean girl (gn) [C]
s14e7 — unhuman nature : again not necessary, but good jack development/jack scenes with his family [C]
s14e8 — byzantium : VERY important plot wise, re: cas and jack. [PLOT, C]
s14e10 — nihilism : so good. so very very good. also, pamela barnes. [PLOT, C]
do not watch s14e13 lebanon. i repeat, disregard lebanon.
s14e14 — ouroboros : again, one of my faves. gay motw, and v cute scene between dean and cas (: also, rowena!!! [C]
s14e17 — game night : the plot in this ep bleeds through onto the divorce arc of season 15. the ending is...ambiguous, but you can either watch 14x18 or find out what happens in the summary of that ep [PLOT]
s14e20 — moriah : again, a season finale. eps 18-20 really hinge on the events of 14x17, so all you really need to know is that they’re all v upset about [redacted redacted], which happens in ep 17. [PLOT]
s15e3 — the rupture : what i consider to be part one of three re: the divorce arc. also we’ve got a good smattering of characters and it’s important for plot reasons [PLOT, C]
s15e6 — golden time : part 2 of 3 in divorce arc. definite angst, lots of cas, and lots of eileen ((: [PLOT, C]
s15e9 — the trap : now, ofc this is part 3 of 3 in the divorce arc, and while it may be a great dean/cas ep, i must say it’s also one of my favorite sam episodes. sorry, but you really can’t skip this one!! [PLOT, C]
s15e10 — the heroes' journey : one of my favorite episodes, but it's garth-centric and you can really read all you need to know via episode summary but still. the implications of this ep haunt me. why lamp. [C]
s15e17 — unity : lots of god-stuff happening, and it leads into 15x18 [PLOT, C]
s15e18 — despair : the last episode of spn!! [PLOT, C]
so, added up, that’s 4 essential eps in season 12, 4 essential eps in season 13, 4 essential eps in season 14, and 5 essential eps in season 15. grand total of 17 eps across all four seasons! (which is less than one full season of the show)
quick run down in case you need a TL;DR:
season 12: episodes 1, 10, 19 and 23
season 13: episodes 1, 6, 10, and 23
season 14: episodes 3, 8, 10, and 17
season 15: episodes 3, 6, 9, 17, and 18
now, if you need to narrow it down even further, i’d prioritize the eps that are labeled “[PLOT, C]” (12 eps) as those are important plot-wise and also for references w/i the fandom. good luck, i hope this helped!!

SPN 15X04 Atomic Monsters: Notes
Episode Summary (via IMDB): Sam and Dean investigate the mysterious death of a girl and the disappearance of another.
Written By: Davy Perez
Directed By: Jensen Ackles
Tagging: @thegalwhorants @emblue-sparks @metafest @verobatto-angelxhunter @evvvissticante @sudo-apt-get-destiel @wildligia @mishka-the-angel-of-saturday @stopmakingfaces (peeps put in bold are those tumblr won’t let me tag. It’s tumblr, what else is new?)
Spoilers below the cut:
Pre-Episode Thoughts:
A bit late, I know, but there's some things I wanna think out before going into this episode, that will affect my mood while watching.
1) This will be a Cas-less episode, and I have no idea when he will return. At least this time Cas will have left on his own terms, so maybe his absence will have a different feel to it, but I still strongly dislike episodes when he's gone. There truly feels like there's a void in the show, in the characters' interpersonal dynamics, without Cas there.
2) The tone of this episode. Sam and Dean investigate cheerleader deaths at Beaverdale, what hi-jinks will ensue? It could be a vintage bait-and-switch by Davy Perez, with us going "It's another MotW episode...? In the midst of a Destiel break-up? And an episode that's weirdly upbeat and cheery?" And that throws me off, quite a bit, especially considering this was the first episode filmed this season, as it's directed by Jensen Ackles. Was Jensen given a more light-hearted script as his final directorial episode for SPN? Or, is this actually going to be a heavy episode in disguise, to throw off the crowd who just want the show to be Sam&Dean against the world? Kinda like 13X05... (Yockey wrote that episode, but Perez was, according to IMDB, an executive story editor)
3) It's Davy, so I expect good things, and PR isn't showrunning, but I'm always cautious with Cas-less episodes. The Cas gap in S13, starting at the midseason finale, was especially frustrating (and set up by Buckleming, so that explains the quality). This is Davy, I need to have good vibes.
Episode Thoughts:
- We begin at the Bunker, lights red, Dean kicking some Demon ass. Looks like it's part of Sam's vision from 15X01.
- Benny? Not that Benny? (It is, played by Ty Olsson)
- Dean's looking for someone. Probably Sam.
- Namedropping Sioux Falls, Bobby and Jody, murdering people? Sam taking Demon blood, killing Dean. All a dream, just a dream? A premonition?
- So far, the episode's very heavy. Dean mentions Jack, Rowena, but not Cas. The absence of Cas' name, or even Sam bringing him up, at least not yet, we're meant to notice.
- Sam insisting Dean work the case alone. Even the Bros-only, Monster of the Week episode is muted.
- The girl who's dead, Susie, had a best friend named Veronica. Another of the students then comments how Veronica is mourning, 'Like a piece of my heart is gone'. So, best friends, maybe something more, separated by death, in the first episode since the Destiel breakup? Nothing queer here.
- Dean's day-drinking. When's the last time he's done that? S13 grief-arc?
- Becky married? With kids? Eeeeew, Chuck's stalking her.
- Becky talks about how she turned her dark obsession into something, unbelievably, healthy. She actually feels shame for the stuff she did to Sam in S7.
- Looks like Billy, Susie's friend, is a part of a Vampire nest. Or, is it just the Dad? But, the Mom looks like she's in charge. I don't know if the Dad would do anything without her approval.
- As a result of Becky's pep-talk, Chuck begins to write, again.
- Sam and Dean show up at Billy's place, confronting the Dad. I still think the Mom's involved, but I'm not sure about Billy, himself.
- Maybe Billy's the Vampire, and he doesn't want to hurt anyone. But, his parents are getting him the blood he needs, without his asking.
- Becky critiquing Chuck's work, especially the part where 'there's no mention of Cas'. The ultimate Bronly and Wincest shipper is really a Cas fan, a TFW fan. I know, I saw the Funko Pops on the mantle.
- Billy's a Jack mirror. "I killed someone I loved". Billy to Susie, Jack to Mary. And, in an episode with Benny, a Vampire with a heart of gold, who befriended Dean, and was killed by Dean, and Dean's now gotta kill Billy.
- (Speculation) Sam's visions are actually Chuck's ideas for an ending. That's it, Chuck's been wavering on an ending, and his ideas are leaking to Sam. Now that Chuck's certain of the ending, regardless of the destination, maybe Sam's visions will get more frequent, detailed.
- So, still no mention of Cas (on Chuck's end). Maybe like in S4 with Lilith, Cas will be a dark horse, coming from Chuck's blindspot.
- Now, the Sam and Dean Funko Pops are on the desk with Chuck, as he continues to write.
Post episode thoughts:
-Billy was executed by Dean, while Sam stood in the background, as Billy was on his knees. Hell, Billy's Dad, now that I think about it, was a Cas mirror: willing to take the blame for his son's actions. The imagery of the Mom holding Sam and Dean at gunpoint makes me think of Dean to Jack (Or Dean in general). There's also the Mom's need for day-drinking, paralleled with Dean's.
-Earlier in the episode, during Sam's dream, when Dean says Sam went to Sioux Falls and did something bad to Bobby and Jody, does he mean AU!Bobby? Why would that Bobby be in Sioux Falls in the first place, everyone outside of the Wayward crew thinks he’s dead. Would Jody have called in backup, and AU!Bobby would’ve gotten killed along with her?
-Sam and Dean confronted Veronica, and there's an emphasis on Dean calling out Veronica's eulogy for Susie. As I stated earlier, Veronica and Susie being mirrors for Dean and Cas. Dean, who's spent the whole of 15X04 trying to cheer-up a distressed Sam, while being the living embodiment of the "This is Fine" meme. Dean, who then tries to invalidate Veronica's grief, believing she's putting on an act, because that's exactly what Dean's doing, now.
Those are my thoughts for this week’s episode! This was a really meaty episode, one I’m sure Dean could get behind (Bless you, Davy).
If you like my stuff, and want to be tagged in future notes/metas, let me know!

BACKGROUND
Born and raised in South Florida, a little aways from Miami ! Her mother, Paloma, was an Adventura native while her father, Santiago, was an immigrant from Argentina. Her parents met in college when Paloma was studying abroad in Argentina. They fell in love, rather quickly, and the rest was history. They had planned on moving back to America together, but Santiago’s visa was denied. So, after only four months of knowing each other and 2.5 months of dating, they got married.
Turns out sometimes you should know your partner better before getting married !! shocker right. It wasn’t so bad at first, though. They were young and in love and their honeymoon phase seemed to last forever, until it didn’t.
By the time Nadia was born, they’d already begun to realize each other’s faults and flaws. Santiago was a good looking guy, and with his thick Argentine accent, he tended to come off as overly friendly and at times overtly flirty. Paloma was jealous and needy. It never seemed to mesh well when she thought her husband was flirting with every other mom in the neighborhood.
So, for the majority of Nadia’s childhood, all she remembered from her parent’s marriage was them fighting. She had a close relationship with the both of them, though, and she was particularly close with her father. He was her biggest supporter !! Always hyping her up. He was the one signing her up for sports like soccer (they’re a huge soccer family, the only time her parents weren’t fighting was during Argentina games), gymnastics, dance, and ice skating. Her favorite was soccer, and her for most of her adolescent years, her dad coached her team. They formed a really close bond because of it.
The marriage was sort of non exinsistant at this point, but in some sort of last attempt to salvage any love they might have had for each other, Santiago and Paloma had a baby. It was more Paloma’s idea than anything. Santiago, at that point, was only sticking around for Paloma. She was seven when her little sister was born, Caterina, and Nadia absolutely adored her. They may have been seven years a part, but they were the best of friends.
When Nadia was twelve, she woke up with a note on her bed side table. It was from her father, and it read: “Nads, I’m so sorry I couldn’t say goodbye to your face. I wish I was stronger. I am so proud of you and I promise I will be in touch. Te amo. Papa” He hadn’t left anybody else a note, and not even a word to her mother. As close as she was to her mother and sister, she couldn’t help but blame them for her father leaving. Still, she was pretty certain she’d hear from him soon. That he’d come back once he cleared his head. Only, he didn’t.
Word spread pretty fast around school about what had happened. Suddenly, Nadia was a charity case. PTA moms were coming up to her and offering to bring her lunch or dinner, if she needed it. She was the girl who’s dad left them high and dry. It didn’t help that on top of that, her body was going through changes much more rapidly than any of her friends. She already had gotten her period, and by the time she was in seventh grade she was wearing a D cup bra. So in addition to the sudden spotlight as the girl without a dad, boys started treating her differently. Boys that had never talked to her previously suddenly wanted to be her friend. In eighth grade, Hayden Walker rolled up a small piece of paper and shot it like a basketball into her cleavage. He high-fived his friends after and thanked her for the backboard.
So middle school was rough. And while Nadia had had one or two boyfriends during that time, she’d never gone past kissing them. That’s not how the rumors went, though. That was the part that hurt the most. The things people said, especially the things girls said about her. Girls she thought were her friends.
At the end of eighth grade, during the summer before high school, she got a text from her dad. The first one in 2 years! She’d idolized him her whole life, so obviously she was ready to forgive him as soon as she heard from him. He told her he was living in California and Nadia was like, I’m sold! Let’s go! Only her mother was like...are you fucking insane you are not going to California to visit that man. Long story short, she found a cheap cross country bus ticket and essentially ran away from home to see her dad! He was shocked she had come at all, despite his text message leading her to believe he wanted to see her. Apparently it was more of a courtesy text, a text so he could let go of the guilt of leaving an entire family behind. Because in the two years he’d been gone, he managed to start a new one. He had a new wife, and two newborn twins.
Nadia was pretty furious, but she stayed the summer anyways. She had full intentions of starting high school in California and not going home to Florida. Things were tense at her father’s, though. Her “step mother” obviously didn’t like having her around, and though her bond with her father was slowly rekindling, there was still a sort of distance between them. But they were trying to make it work, at the very least.
Then came the end of the summer. Nadia had made a few friends around the neighborhood, and was invited to an end of summer kickback with a bunch of high schoolers. Naturally, she lied about her age at the party. She was 14, but told everyone she was 16, and everyone seemed to overlook her baby face thanks to her ass and tits. At the end of the night, a boy drove her home, and the two ended up hooking up in the car. Apparently she had misjudged how much her father actually cared, because he’d waited up for her to come home, and after seeing car headlights out front, he’d stormed outside to find her in the car with a high school boy, half naked. After allowing her to gather her bearings, he essentially humiliated her right there on the front lawn, screaming about how irresponsible she was amongst other things. The majority of the conversation has since been blacked out from her mind, but she’ll never forget the look on her dad’s face when he said, “you’re nothing, you’re just like your mother, and i don’t want you anywhere near my family.”  whew !! ya girl was hurt.
So, obviously, she was back on the way to mom’s ! Honestly at that point her mom wasn’t even mad at her for leaving she was just thankful she was back.
GODDD okay this is getting long so I need to wrap this up. I haven’t even gotten to personality KJSHG Okay let’s wrap up high school in one bullet point. Basically she sub consciously searched for every man’s approval because she lacked the approval she needed from her father! This meant lots of boyfriends and never saying no. In her four years of high school, she was maybe single for a total of like ... seven months. not seven consecutive months lmao, 7 months in between relationships.
one of those boys was connor perch, her first official boyfriend freshman year ! they were really sweet n young and nadia really thought she was in love. but then she gave him a blowjob and this mf recorded it ! and nadia found out after the fact, asked him to delete it, he said it was just for himself to look at, only to find out he’d sent it to his friends a few days later. so that basically set the precedent for how she’d be treated the next four years of high school ! she tried to act like it didn’t bother her but dang. high schoolers can be very mean !
oh my god i seriously have to wrap up okay this will be quick. basically when she was a senior in high school she went on a ski trip to big bear and met a boy named ethan, who she like fell in love with so fast like literally a week give it a rest girl. he was from Colorado but when she left they kept in touch and basically talked every day for the rest of the school year and throughout the summer. She’d decided to apply to Boulder University to be closer to him because this time it really felt like the real thing ! SURPRISE AGAIN ! She got to school and found out he had a girlfriend. She was really mf heartbroken over that. But did she learn her lesson? No. Does she still fall in love with anyone who looks in her direction? Yes.
Okay and lastly she has been working all sorts of jobs throughout college because her mom is helping her pay for tuition and rent so she’s gotta cover spending money ! She ended up getting a job at Big Bear Resort during her last winter break as an ice skating instructor because she used to do ice skating back in the day. Now she works at Big Bear during her school breaks and on some weekends !
TLDR/Tidbits
Hopeless romantic with major daddy issues
Will overanalyze every interaction she has with anyone because she thinks they might like her
EXTREMELY GULLIBLE
Probably will have a crush if you are even remotely nice to her
Really dumb but means well. Literally no common sense. Complete bimbo
Cries A LOT. Complete crybaby. Happy or sad she’s probably crying
Heart of gold!! She really always means well even when she fucks up so bad I SWEAR her heart was in the right place
Can outdrink anyone. She would drink a 6ft5in, 200 pound man under the table any day
Tequila is her choice of drink, but vodka is for her #sadgirlhours
Obsessed with Rosalía, Lana Del Rey, & Rex Orange County. And also 2010 bangers. Anything she can shake her ass to !
She pretty much used to exclusively wear mini dresses because when she realized everyone was just gonna sexualize her anyway, she was like FUCK IT, i’ll show my ass n titties n legs. Except it’s fucking like negative degrees in Colorado so she can’t do that ! Bummer. (she’ll still probably find ways to wear mini dresses)
Obsessed with makeup!! She loves doing adventurous things with eyeshadows and lipsticks  like ok euphoria
Kinda crazy. Major crackhead vibes especially when she’s drunk! She loves going out, she’ll go out on a Tuesday, she just likes to have fun ok and dance on tables and make out with cute people
She’ll have a one night stand but just know for HER she’ll probably get attached. I’m so sorry it won’t last that long but she’ll pine for at least a week
ok that is all i’m so sorry for this shit show of an intro but here is a messy list of wc !

Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage Review: Behind the Scenes of a Musical Disaster
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
That ain’t teenage spirit you’re smelling. HBO’s Music Box documentary Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage reeks of righteous condemnation, judicial indiscretion, and conspiratorial obfuscation. But it’s okay. This is a disaster film masquerading as a documentary, and the found footage makes it all pay off. Director Garrett Price personally opens the film in the voiceover, explaining how the 1999 celebration itself was written to be a comedy, but “played out much more like a horror film.”
Music festivals have come to represent generations. The original Woodstock: an Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music concert in the summer of 1969 brought half a million people together with the artists who spoke for and to them in a communal love bond. The organizers lost money, the capacity was underestimated, but the audience came together to share what they had to make the weekend legendary. In December that year, the Rolling Stones concert at Altamont was marred by the pool cues and knives of the security team, the Hells Angels. It was deemed the end of the ‘60s.
Woodstock ‘94 happened at the height of the Grunge Revolution, when Kurt Cobain wore a dress but didn’t shave his stubble, and Riot Grrrls blasted personal dissent with the passion of the punk elite and no one cared if they shaved their legs. The organizers lost money, but the fans and the bands were one unit who achieved the common goal of joy. Woodstock ‘99 happened five years later and enjoyed the accessibility of the mainstream’s greatest unifier: MTV. The organizers made money and 200,000 people attended, but the audience got such a raw deal, even the musicians who played got scared. It is remembered as “the day the ’90s died.”
Opening on the 22nd anniversary of the festival, the documentary deems Woodstock ’99 a disaster. They even call in a guy from FEMA, who says it was worse than Hurricane Katrina and the great flood. Told chronologically, Price, who previously directed Love, Antosha, the 2019 tribute to Anton Yelchin, begins with the excitement of a three-day festival.  Held on a former military installation in Rome, New York, the Griffiss Air Base was set up to keep the grounds free of ticketless celebrants.
The security team is exposed as a bunch of amateurs specially trained on which boxes to check in a multiple-choice test, and how to find someone’s personal stash of bottled water in a backpack. “There’s a festival grounds in Germany that was literally built by Hitler,” The Offspring’s guitarist Noodles says in an interview. “It’s a great venue, a lot of fun. The air base was less hospitable than the venue built by Nazis.”
There were nonstop performances held a mile apart from each other on the grounds. One highlighted its mosh pits, the other the dance floor. The biggest electronic artist in the Rave Tent proves his genre’s atmosphere opens doorways to perception. “There is a sixth sense that you develop when you spend your life going to venues,” Moby says in an interview. “We got off the bus and I was like, ‘Something is not right.'”
The film is very generous with behind-the-scenes footage. We are treated to aerial shots of cramped campsites, long ATM lines, leaky Port-O-Potties oozing something that only looked like mud, and $4 water bottles, which sold as much as beer in temperatures over 100 degrees. We are told in advance three people died, 44 were arrested. There were 10 reported sexual assaults.
The lineup for the concert was a mix of hard rock bands, pop stars, and hip-hop acts like The Roots, and ICP. Rapper DMX’s epithetic call and response performance gets special notice. “The Black performer is essentially licensing the people in the crowd to say this word with him,” New York Times’ Wesley Morris says in an interview. “If you got each one of these guys after the show, and pulled them aside and said, ‘is it OK to say the N-word under any circumstances?’ They would, to a person, say, ‘I mean, the right answer is no, right?’”
For returning music aficionados with remnants of the first gathering still in their memories, organizers booked jam bands and a few older acts like Elvis Costello, Willie Nelson, and The Who’s John Entwistle. “The ’99 Woodstock seemed like it was trying to relive a nostalgic moment, along with commercialism and capitalism, but not having a real soulful purpose for the show,” singer-songwriter Jewel says in an interview.
As the documentary points out, a lot of the younger attendees had no idea what Wyclef Jean was referencing in his solo guitar performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” They ask one kid, who can’t remember who did it first even though he’s standing directly under a huge stencil of Jimi Hendrix’s name. When Bush’s Gavin Rossdale begins Country Joe & the Fish’s “Gimme an F,” the chanters only seek Amy.
Music is supposed to have charms which soothe the savage breast. Many people think the final word of the phrase is “beast,” and the documentary further blurs the line. The early ‘90s music artists were anti-misogynist, anti-racist, anti-homophobic and radically informed. Happening at the end of the Clinton era, when MTV pitted boy bands and pop girls against nü-metal rockers, a fur-coated Kid Rock could call Monica Lewinsky a ho and pass it off as a political statement.
Toxic masculinity’s dirty sister framed Britney Spears as a “Girls Gone Wild” extra, and magazines like Maxim and FHM encouraged the idea young men could shout “show your tits” to Rosie Perez without getting bitch-slapped, the documentary posits. Only three women were invited to perform at the weekend-long, two-stage festival: Jewel, Alanis Morrissette, and Sheryl Crow. “I’m baffled how it went from the progressive, enlightened values of Kurt Cobain and Michael Stipe to misogyny and homophobia and the rape-frat boy culture that was at Woodstock ‘99,” Moby ponders in the film.
Of course, none of wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t all pre-staged. This is where Price dips into the era’s obsession with paranoia. It was the end of the millennium, the Columbine shootings had happened, and the Y2K bug was coming. It was finally time to party like it’s 1999. “Really, the biggest problem was that MTV set the tone,” organizer John Scher says in an interview.
But he downplays it, like he might have been warned by Cigarette Smoking Man from The X-Files. “There’s no question that a few incidents took place. But if you go back in the records of the police and state police and stuff, we’re not talking about 100. Or even 50. We’re talking about 10. I am critical of the hundreds of women that were walking around with no clothes on, and expecting not to be touched. They shouldn’t have been touched, and I condemn it. But you know, I think that women that were running around naked, you know, are at least partially to blame for that.”
Partial blame is all the rage in Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage. The documentary points out how history paints the original Woodstock like it really was a return to the garden, with peace and love and former flower children having babies to Santana’s “Soul Sacrifice.” But music journalist Steven Hyden reminds us about a group of disgruntled shoppers called “’The Up Against the Wall Motherfuckers,” who didn’t like food prices and burned dozens of stands down.
After Woodstock ’99 grounds started smoking when the candles handed out for a vigil for Columbine victims became torches to burn the place down, the documentary says Rome Mayor Joseph Griffo asked Anthony Kiedis to douse the crowd’s misplaced enthusiasm. The Red Hot Chili Peppers launched into a scorching rendition of Jimi Hendrix’s “Fire.” History blames bands like Limp Bizkit, Korn, and Rage Against the Machine for the destruction. But really, the artistic decision of that song to those circumstances is a no-brainer. “Smoke on the Water” would have been too easy. “Disco Inferno” would have been too obvious.
The documentary talks with the event’s organizers, as well as performers like Korn’s Jonathan Davis, The Offspring, Scott Stapp of Creed, The Roots’ Black Thought. Wesley Morris and Spin‘s Maureen Callahan put things into perspective. The only person the documentary doesn’t talk with is Fred Durst, the frontman for Limp Bizkit, who became the poster boy for the event’s bad behavior. Oh, they talk about him, though. They talk about him like he’s not there, and because he’s not there they must think he won’t see it. At the height of Limp Bizkit’s set, the singer encouraged the crowd to “Break Stuff.” But let’s be fair, it is the name of their song, and Durst is the guy who told the crowd to pick someone up if they fall, not to grope them.
This is what happens when the counterculture makes money. Everyone wants a piece. Woodstock 99: Love, Peace, and Rage is an even-handed dispenser of blame, and has slices for all. The first in a series of music-based documentaries from Bill Simmons’ Ringer Films, this immersive journey bodes well for upcoming tunes.

All the men and women merely players (2/5)
So this maybe got a little out of hand - as usual.
As always, dedicated to @catty-words and @rebeccaplimpton because they’re the absolute best.
This is my Thanksgiving gift to all of you.
.....
CHAPTER TWO: Get your head outta the game (AO3)
The Gods were punishing him for something, that much was obvious.
For some disgusting reason his body had suddenly decided to be attracted to one Rebecca Nora Bunch. After all the time he spent taking care of himself, of his body, it was now suddenly rebelling against him and his wishes.
And by taking care of his body he did indeed mean the occasional bout of masturbation if there were no willing girls available. And lately there had been very few girls who had met his exacting standards. There just weren’t any tens - or even nines - left at Rodgers Academy who he hadn’t already banged.
Very disappointing.
But the lack of female company did not mean that his body had to have a dick aneurysm and decide that it was suddenly attracted to Bunch of all people.
There had to be something medically wrong with him.
She was annoying, not all that attractive, and completely uninterested in him as a person or as a sexual object. Well, okay maybe not that last one because he could have sworn that he saw a hint of interest in her eyes at that fateful rehearsal.
Wishful thinking? Not at all. He didn’t actually want her to show any interest - sure, it was super flattering to his ego to think that even a theater geek like her would totally want to bang him, and maybe she’d want to let him get up close and personal with that chest, and… wait, what was he saying?
Right, he didn’t actually want her to be interested. Because he wasn’t interested either. This was just a boner aneurysm. A one time, involuntary bodily response that had nothing to do with actual interest in Bunch.
It was never going to happen again - yeah, as long as it didn’t happen again he was totally fine. There was no need to get dramatic about it.
Clearly being around the dweebs had infected him with their drama. One inconvenient boner did not a real interest make, he just had to remember that.
He’d just turned eighteen - anything could make him pop a boner. Linoleum could do it - so there was no point in reading into this one awkward moment with Bunch. Not at all.
Except he was forced to be around her all the damn time now.
“Nathaniel,” she found him in the hallway. “I know you’re embarrassed to be seen with me in public, but Mr. Whitefeather called an extra practice for this Saturday, and you are the only person who refuses to be part of our group chat.”
It was best not to look at her, just to be sure that there weren’t any residual effects of that dance rehearsal.
“Group chats are unprofessional and a waste of my time,” he dug into his locker with a vengeance. “What is the extra rehearsal for?”
He was supposed to spend Saturday either making valuable connections or splitting it between the gym and his homework. Responsibilities always came first, and surely Father was going to get suspicious soon.
This was what living on borrowed time felt like.
“Something about teambuilding,” Bunch was standing a little too close. “The relationships have to feel real, according to him.”
The relationship felt real enough when her boobs were practically in his face, but if Mr. Whitefeather needed more from them, he could probably make that happen.
As long as he did not actually have to spend any time with the other idiots that were in the group. He did not need to be doing any trust exercises - he didn’t trust any of these idiots, except maybe Bunch.
Ugh, no. Why was that thought even in his head?
“And he couldn’t tell us this in rehearsal about five minutes from now?” he just now made that connection.
He blamed Bunch’s surprisingly low-cut top for his inability to focus. Of course, now that Josh Chan was supposedly single again, she had to start making an effort.
Not that he minded the new look.
“You know he’ll be too busy staring at Mr. Wilson to remember anything else,” Bunch was almost smiling. “Wanna walk to rehearsal together?”
This was getting way too ridiculously high school for his tastes. Was she going to ask him to carry her books next?
“Why?”
“I need Josh to see me with another guy,” she was surprisingly upfront about it. “He’s dragging his feet.”
Of course he was - Josh Chan was completely incapable of making decisions for himself. Unless someone forced him to make a choice, and Bunch seemed almost sad about being forced to wait still.
“Fine,” he rolled his eyes. “You can pretend you have friends.”
“I have friends,” Bunch protested. “I definitely have friends.”
The guidance counselor did not count. He almost wanted to say that, but then he looked at her face and actually second-guessed himself. She looked defensive, and more than a little sad.
She was very aware of just how pathetic she seemed - of how lonely she truly was.
He should have disabused her of those illusions of friendship, should have just broken it to her in his typical forthright style.
But he didn’t.
“You have all the friends,” he only sounded the slightest bit sarcastic as he slammed his locker shut.
Sure, he started walking before she was ready to leave, but his strides were a lot smaller than usual, just to give her a little time to catch up.
This spelled trouble.
------
Josh Chan did not want to dance with her.
Finally he was talking to her again, but it was only to tell her that it would be a bad idea for the two of them to start dating so soon after he and Valencia had broken up. It would piss her off too much, and seeing as she was doing theater with Rebecca, Josh just did not want to risk her getting bullied by Valencia and her minions.
Well, not any more than she already was.
It was so sweet of him to worry about her like that. He totally cared about her, and he still wanted to kiss her. He did still kiss her - behind closed doors, but still.
Rebecca Nora Bunch was the clear winner here.
She was.
She just had to keep reminding herself of that while she was faced with a very emotionally unstable Valencia Perez in rehearsal on Saturday.
First of all, it was super disconcerting to see that the head cheerleader had any kind of sincere emotions. She faked it really well for the pep rallies - like, disturbingly well - but it was very obvious to all the students that there was not actually a soul in that ridiculously flexible body of hers.
Valencia made her suffer from all kinds of body envy - she had the conventionally beautiful looks that Rebecca absolutely would have killed for. What? A little murder never hurt - okay so it did.
Being the fat chick even when she wasn’t technically overweight - it was not very fun. And girls like Valencia, with the snide comments and the whispers and stares, they were the ones who made her feel both small and enormous in all the worst ways.
“Men are the worst,” Valencia proclaimed as she daintily crossed her legs.
“The worst,” Heather Davis echoed, looking off into the distance.
Ugh, she hated that her first instinct was to do some lame “not all men” kind of thing. Because right now, generalizing all men seemed like the most realistic way to go through life - men really were the worst. They all left and there was no way she could depend on any of them. She could only depend on Paula.
“Don’t get me started on men,” she felt obligated to join in.
Because really, they were right and if they were old enough they would have had a ton of alcohol and continued in this vein for the rest of the weekend. She just really didn’t want to get started on her particular issues with the male gender and a certain specific bro type of dude. That would stir up the hornet’s nest.
“Don’t get me started on men,” Valencia actually seemed to be indifferent to her now - progress.
“Totally,” Heather nodded sagely.
Seriously, was that girl high all the time or just supremely uninterested in life in general? It seemed impossible to figure out. Or maybe it was just both. She wasn’t going to judge - she was way too invested in life. Maybe it was just a lot less painful to not care.
“Are my stepsisters actually getting along?” Mr. Whitefeather was thrilled, bouncing on the balls of his feet.
Maybe if they played up on their newfound sisterhood he wouldn’t make them do any more trust falls or any of those exercises that involved being blinded.
Sure, she could work with these people, and had been working with some of them for several years now. But that did not mean she trusted them. Too many people thought it was just hilarious to drop her a little bit too far, or to lead her into a wall.
Yes, forever damaging someone’s trust in not only them, but everyone else, it was just… gut-bustingly hilarious.
“Those exercises really worked, Mr. Whitefeather,” she took the lead.
“Absolutely,” Heather drew a random symbol in the margins of her script.
She’d been off book sooner than most others - seemed like the stoner girl was actually a lot smarter than people gave her credit for.
Besides, Heather was totally going to pull off the redemption arc - she just had that vibe that made people wanna root for her. Maybe someone could work out a way to bottle that, because nobody ever wanted to root for Rebecca.
That hideous thought made her look away from the girls.
Of course she winded up locking eyes with the one person who’d never rooted for her - heck, he’d actively rooted for her to fail: Nathaniel freaking Plimpton. He was forced to work with Grant (that was totally his name), and clearly he was not having a lot of fun. Just the look on his haughty, aristocratic face was enough to put a smile back on hers.
He totally deserved everything he was getting. So there.
“Surprisingly, I agree,” Valencia wasn’t even lying much.
“Girls, you are true professionals,” Mr. Whitefeather almost skipped back to the boys’ side of the stage, where Geoff almost slapped Nathaniel in the face with a prop.
Ah yes, this was why this guy was just the understudy and not supposed to actually be on stage with any of them. There had better not be any broken limbs or diseases in this cast - having to go out on stage with that guy was a nightmare come true.
She actually preferred Nathaniel, which almost came as a shock. He’d been surprisingly not terrible lately. She just hoped he wouldn’t go soft.
“So, Stepsister’s Lament?” Heather was the one to get them back to work. “We could make that a lot funnier.”
Yes, a good work ethic. She could definitely work with that. They were absolutely going to be a highlight of the show if she had anything to say about that - and she usually had a lot to say about everything.
“Dude,” Nathaniel suddenly exclaimed.
She had to look, how could she not?
Somehow idiot Graham had spilled a hot beverage onto Nathaniel’s shirt. How did that idiot even get a hold of coffee? She would murder someone for a cup right about now.
The good part of the spillage? Nathaniel, in his fear of getting burnt on his tight abs, had yanked off his shirt, leaving him shirtless and glowing under the stage lights. How did he get that tan all over? It seemed like it was all over, anyway, and she absolutely would not mind finding out if she was right about that. Hot damn.
“Would you mind not staring at your boyfriend all the time?” Valencia broke through the fog.
Josh? Was Josh here?
Okay, so Josh wasn’t actually her boyfriend, but he probably would be soon. Not that Valencia should be aware of that at this point in time. Weird.
“Plimpton,” Valencia clearly didn’t see the truth. “I know he’s half naked over there and being all buff, but we actually have things to do here.”
Yes, focus. It was important to focus. On something other than those positively lickable - oh God she needed to slap herself in the face because distracting herself from all the yummy was not going to work without a good hard slap.
Just because Nathaniel was hot, didn’t mean he wasn’t Satan. Or Satan’s lapdog, really, because his father seemed a lot worse and -
Focus, Bunch!
------
He’d be lying his tight ass off if he said he’d never been to the guidance counselor’s office before. He probably qualified for some kind of frequent visitor program by now (what would the benefits even be like for that?). Every time his mother had another episode that was completely ignored by his father, he was forced there to talk about his feelings.
He had none. No emotions for Nathaniel Plimpton.
Mrs. Proctor didn’t want him there any more than he wanted to be there, so she didn’t mind if he just did his homework or played around on his phone just so they could both claim they had those meetings without lying too much. The principal just did not let him get away with not attending a meeting, not anymore. After half a dozen episodes just during his high school years, there was no excuse they had not heard already.
This was the first time that Mrs. Proctor had actually scheduled a meeting with him without being prompted – meaning, forced – to do so by the powers that be. He was one hundred percent sure she didn’t just stop hating him – Mrs. Proctor was absolutely the type to hold a grudge to the grave. He almost respected her for that.
Almost – because being, shudder, “besties” with a student and using her teacher powers to track every move Josh Chan made? Kind of really out of bounds. There had to be rules against using confidential information to get a student laid.
Well, that was his ammo, and he was probably going to need it.
“What are your intentions towards my Cookie?” Mrs. Proctor was looking down at him.
She’d made him sit down and then stood up so that she appeared even the slightest bit intimidating by looming over him. Her height did not exactly scare him.
And neither did the fact that her snacks seemed to be her first priority. He would never eat a cookie, so why was he a suspect in this weird snack-related mystery?
Did she even have any idea about what kind of garbage people put in baked goods? They were ridiculously fattening and unlike some people at this school, he cared about maintaining a perfect physique.
People had noticed - even Mrs. Proctor. Even Bu- bunches of people who weren’t ogling his abs in rehearsal last weekend. Not that he had been looking at her, of course.
“Cookie?” he dumbly repeated.
“Rebecca Bunch,” Mrs. Proctor huffed.
Right, like it wasn’t completely unprofessional for their guidance counselor to have a motherly nickname for a student. Or any kind of nickname, really. And letting him hear her using that nickname was a whole new level of bad.
Like, blackmail potential bad, which was always a good thing for him.
“My intentions towards Bunch?” he started by repeating the question just to drive Mrs.Proctor completely up the wall.
He sounded like the mere idea of him having any sort of intentions towards Bunch was ludicrous. He did, right?
Wait, did he have intentions towards Bunch?
Nah, just the idea of that... Ludicrous. Ridiculous. Insert clever SAT synonym here.
"You've been spending far too much time with her," Mrs. Proctor tried to kill him with her imaginary laser vision. "She hasn't been spending nearly enough time on the Chan Plan."
They'd named their ridiculous nefarious plan? And they made it rhyme? Honestly, this was everything that was wrong with the world in one simple sentence. Okay, maybe not everything, but it was pretty damn close.
Besides, he had spent no more time with Rebecca than was enforced by Mr. Whitefeather’s increasingly heavy rehearsal schedule. Like he would want to spend any more time with her than that - like he’d want to see her outside of school and maybe…
No. Bad thoughts.
This was truly starting to become a problem - it was not just the boner aneurysm incident anymore. Now it had grown into staring in the hallways, staring across the stage, and then there were the dreams.
Ugh, he was going to need a visit to Panda Canyon after this.
“Take it up with Mr. Whitefeather,” he played it cool, already having been silent for far too long. “He had us in rehearsals all day Saturday.”
It had been a long day, but he hadn’t said no when Mr. Whitefeather had dinner delivered afterwards. Sure, he drew the line at actually eating pizza, but their town also had some healthy options that would not make him feel sick after.
He was over the whole vomiting thing - he’d been there and done that. Monitoring his intake was the better, healthier option.
“I have taken it up with him,” Mrs. Proctor maybe sounded just a little creepy. “And I’ll be watching very closely. That man is way too distracted by Coach Wilson’s shorts.”
True. That was very true. So true that the completely involuntary laugh that escaped him was actually audible to Mrs. Proctor. And she was either going to murder him right this second, right here in the office with her student aid watching, or she would laugh along. Now, he didn’t want to be friends with her, but he was still kind of hoping for the latter.
He was too hot to die like this. Sure, dying young would ensure that he would stay hot for eternity, but he’d rather stay alive a little while longer, thanks.
“Don’t laugh at your teachers, Mister Plimpton,” Mrs. Proctor’s words lacked bite, seeing as she was smiling herself. “How that man managed to get himself installed as head of an entire Department is beyond me.”
Wow, okay, unprofessional again. But he’d go along with it for now, seeing as it was going to save his ass - for now. As soon as the topic went back to her dear, dear Cookie, he was absolutely going to die. He was sure of it.
Also, he was not going to be the kind of dweeb who actually defended Mr. Whitefeather to Mrs. Proctor. That would definitely make him appear like one of them - sure, he almost respected the man now, both for the blackmail and for running a tight ship when the crew consisted of 90% idiots. But still, he was not that kind hearted. Gross.
It was clear that Mrs. Proctor had been hoping he’d get all defensive about his new favorite teacher - as if - and that it annoyed her that he’d stayed perfectly quiet. She clearly wanted him to go soft, so that she’d have something on him.
Think again, Mrs. Proctor. Think again.
His smug grin was infuriating to her, and he liked it that way. God forbid she’d figure out what his true intentions towards Reb.. Bunch were.
Fuck! He did have intentions!
------
That accident in rehearsal might have been the first time she’d seen Nathaniel without a shirt on, but it definitely was not the last time she got a good look at those abs.
Suddenly it seemed like he was everywhere, and he was always sweating or in some state of undress - and maybe it was starting to get to her just a little bit. What? He was looking positively sinful and she was only human.
On Monday, she’d stayed late working on an extra credit assignment her mother had made her agree to. And of course he was just coming out of water polo practice when she left the library, and he was still dripping a bit, his shirt clinging to his skin like he hadn’t quite managed to dry off properly before he got dressed in a hurry. There was one drop running down his collarbone that was close to pornographic - she had to stop for a minute and hope he hadn’t noticed how closely she’d been eyeing him during a brief hallway brush.
Tuesday was even worse. They’d been working so hard on nailing the choreography, and they were both a little sweaty. (Not too gross sweaty, but just a little… sexy sweaty). And then the asshole actually lifted up the bottom of his shirt to wipe the sweat from his brow. It took her a full five seconds to look anywhere but at his bared skin - just one second too few to get caught in the act.
By Wednesday she was starting to think that he was doing all of this on purpose, just to mess with her. But then she actually got the chance to hang out with Josh for longer than five seconds and she realized that this was just a stupid bout of teenage sexual frustration. All she really wanted was for Josh Chan to finally admit that he loved her like she loved him, so that they could be together out in the open - and she could take him home with her to have her first time in a proper bed.
It was Josh she really wanted, but she was around Nathaniel so much… It made sense for him to be a little distracting. After all, they were playing true lovers, and he was not completely hideous.
Admitting to herself that Nathaniel Plimpton was kind of hot helped with the ridiculousness of some of their encounters during the rest of that week - also, the extensive make out session she’d had with Josh held her over quite nicely
Still, when she was at the school gym on Friday, doing some tricep dips to strengthen her arm muscles - strong arm muscles made it so much easier to stay in freeze for a while during some of the show’s tableaus - she just happened to run into Nathaniel again. Only this time their run-in was quite literal.
She hadn’t been paying attention when moving on to her cardio circuit, and when he’d rounded a corner at the same time, she ended up awkwardly pressed up against a sweaty Nathaniel who was only wearing a tank and really thin gym shorts. And when she said thin, she meant thin enough to feel absolutely everything.
It was almost a feeling of deja vu, but not in a bad way. Not that she liked having every inch of his rock solid body pressed up against her - as if!
But she still had to distract herself from her body’s annoying reaction to it later that night, especially because they had another full Saturday of rehearsals planned the next day. And there was no way she was going to let this momentary hormonal lapse affect her performance. So she watched some of her favorite musicals in preparation for the day when she would finally be a true Broadway star.
She fell asleep halfway through the seminal classic Chicago.
When her eyes opened again she was in a large, unfamiliar bedroom. She needed it to be Josh’s - that was the only bedroom she wanted to spend time in, after all - but the room didn’t scream Josh at all. There was no Hawaiian theme, no surfing paraphernalia just laying about somewhere. Instead the room was decorated luxuriously, nothing even an inch out of place on the old-fashioned desk and the giant bed perfectly made. What kind of soulless automaton would live in a room like this?
“Why are you here, Bunch?”
Well, that certainly answered that question - and rather quickly, too. Of course Nathaniel was the soulless automaton in question. Who else could it possibly be?
“I wanted to see you,” she found herself saying, without ever consciously deciding to admit that particular hidden truth to him. “I need your help. I need your particular brand of evil.”
Her coat was still buttoned up tight, and she could feel the silky smooth fabric of her stockings rubbing together on the inside of her thighs. Her black heels were high enough that she didn’t have to crane her neck quite so much to look him in the eye. She might not have been wearing a flapper style dress underneath her coat - or much of anything, it seemed - but the setting of this scene certainly made sense.
This was a seduction scene - she had some epic plan and seducing Nathaniel to get him to work with her was just the first step. Yes, it was all coming back to her now.
“What has Chan done this time?”
It seemed that Nathaniel was not willing to just play along with her this time.
“This has nothing to do with him,” she slowly started to unbutton her coat, revealing that there was nothing but black, lacy lingerie underneath. “This is about you and me.”
He visibly gaped at her, the tension in his body obvious from his eyes to his adam’s apple, from the set of his shoulders to the way his abs had tensed up. She almost didn’t dare look further down than that. The operative word being ‘almost’ - there was no visible tension there yet, but if she had her way there soon would be.
“Bunch,” he tried to protest.
It didn’t help him. Not at all! She just let her coat drop to his impeccably cleaned floor and smoothed down her black teddy.
And then she waited. She watched him watch her, his gaze starting at her eyes and then slowly making its way down her body. Her cleavage was spectacular in this outfit and she didn’t even need Spanx to feel okay in the teddy. It was obvious that Nathaniel appreciated her Velma Kelly inspired ensemble. He could not stop staring.
“You can touch, you know,” she teased, taking one single step closer to him.
Nathaniel took a step back and immediately fell onto the the giant bed that dominated his room, the bed that she could not stop thinking about. Still, she had to wait for him to make the next move.
Consent was important, okay?!
Finally he reached for her, and she let herself be dragged into his lap, her teddy riding up on her stocking-clad thighs. His hands were on her waist, hesitantly moving up in the direction of her chest.
She leaned in to kiss him, desperate to finally have his mouth on hers.
“Bunch,” he panted. “Rebecca.”
And then she woke up, twisted in the sheets of her own bed, breathing hard and wondering what the hell was wrong with her.
Because this? This was wrong!
------
Yes, it was more than a little bit odd that he kept seeing Bunch everywhere, but he was not going to read into it. She was not doing it on purpose - she was not a good enough actress for him to not see that she was genuinely flustered every single time he showed up.
It really was a nice boost to the ego.
Even though she was still all heart eyes for Mr. If Only I Had A Brain, she could not deny the chemistry. Now that he’d stopped denying it most of the time, it was good to see that she was not all that far behind.
And he had a plan to make her catch up to him, a very simple plan that would not take a lot of time to implement.
Seduction.
If she reacted so strongly just because she happened to see him shirtless and/or sweating a few times, she would probably react a lot stronger when he actually started doing it on purpose. Plus, he already knew they’d be together for every partner exercise in their morning session, because Mr. Whitefeather was that obvious.
Their teacher either really wanted them to get it on, or - the more boring option - he just wanted them to come across as a perfect couple on stage. Or both, even.
Really, he didn’t much care about why Mr. Whitefeather was doing this, it just worked for him that he did. It gave him a lot of opportunities to screw with Bunch - and maybe eventually it would give him ample (ha!) opportunities to screw her.
A whole Saturday’s worth of opportunities.
Ugh, he did not want to even consider what another Saturday of his absence would mean to his father. Surely the old man had noticed and he wasn’t pleased with him. It was only a matter of time before the explosion would destroy him. The clock was ticking louder and louder - it would strike soon, and in the worst way.
It was just better for his mental health not to think about it for too long. That only lead down the anxiety road, and he could not walk another mile on that one.
So Bunch was definitely the more pleasing and the more diverting option. It was getting easier to get to her every single day, and he wondered if this was the day that he would finally be able to make her crack.
That would only spell good things for his Saturday night.
Sure, Chan might have had some other plans for Bunch, but Nathaniel had a whole day of rehearsal to convince her otherwise. And judging by how flustered she already was after ten minutes in his presence, this might not even be a full day kind of project. Not that he would consider bailing on rehearsal - well, maybe for a quickie in the janitor’s closet - and not that Rebecca Nora Bunch would ever prioritize him over her precious show. Heck, not even Chan came first - theater seemed to be her number one priority
But it seemed like she really needed a break, with someone who knew how to make that break very enjoyable for her. Of course that someone was him - Josh Chan didn’t seem like the selfless type.
Not that he himself was anything but selfish, he was just aware it was better for him when both parties enjoyed themselves. There was nothing selfless and noble about it.
Or was the mere idea of getting it on with a girl who was really not his usual type an almost selfless act? It might have been, were it not that his main motivation was to hit it and quit it, just so she would finally be out of his system. Maybe then he could finally move on to his normal brand of young, vulnerable women.
He started off simple. Now that the official opening was over and Mr. Whitefeather had made all of his announcements, he knew the partner exercises were right around the corner.
As usual, they’d start with contact improv, which meant that they had to start touching each other right away - basically, Mr. Whitefeather was doing half his work for him. He ought to help him in his quest to romance Coach Wilson in return for this. That way he wouldn’t owe his teacher another favor that would need to be cashed in. He was not going to be stuck doing these shows with these idiots for the rest of his life.
This was all just a passing phase, and that included his lame fixation on Bunch. But for now he might as well enjoy himself.
“Here we are again, Bunch,” he grinned at her to watch her fumble with some hair clip. “We really work well together.”
And they actually did. It was annoying, actually.
Sure, he was brilliant, talented, and a natural leader, but this weird connection absolutely did not need to get any stronger than it already was. He really hoped none of these losers wanted to actually be friends after this. Nathaniel Plimpton the Third did not do friends.
“What are you up to?” Bunch was immediately suspicious of him.
“Nefarious plans,” he teased, waiting for Mr. Whitefeather to start the exercise. “You’ll be touching me quite a bit over the next hour or so. Are you sure you’re ready?”
Well, now Bunch really looked at him like she was ready to murder him. Which just meant that his comment had hit a nerve - and they only just started the contact improv. With just a light tap to an innocent body part to make him move that part into a particular direction, they would learn to anticipate each other’s movements.
Bunch couldn’t quite reach the top of his head, which was always a cause of hilarity for him. Still, if he wanted her to get even halfway to seduced, he couldn’t laugh at her too much - or too little. That option would just make her even more suspicious of him.
So he followed almost gamely while she managed to get him down to her level, and he tried not to comment too much on his current view. He was supposed to keep his eyes closed as a show of trust, after all.
The running tally of comments was mostly in his head - with the exception of the occasional comment that slipped out, murmured softly under his breath. Bunch wouldn’t hear them if she was off thinking about something else - and she was.
“Looking good, Bunch,” he decided it was time to distract her.
She immediately noticed the angle and not too gently tapped his left shoulder so he’d turn away from her. Yeah, too late Bunch. He’d already seen more than enough - he wouldn’t just forget it by turning around.
“How long have you been looking down my shirt?” she just sounded tired, which was really not his intention.
“How long has it been since we started this assignment?” he asked in lieu of giving an actual response.
A weary sigh was all the response he got from her. Where the hell did her fire go? That was what he was counting on in this endeavor. He needed her to get fired up and challenge him - it made them both hot, no matter if she was willing to admit that or not.
“What’s wrong, Bunch?” he let himself ask.
He was ready for the brush-off, for the lies about how she was absolutely, completely fine and he was a complete imbecile for even daring to imply that she was anything other than completely healthy and normal and so fucking fine.
That was just how people responded when you spotted a weakness they never meant for you to see. He didn’t see why Rebe-Bunch would respond differently.
“I’m having a bad day,” she said, ever so calmly, even though she was vulnerable in front of a self-proclaimed asshole. “And you being an asshole does not help.”
Every time he thought he knew exactly what to expect from Bunch, she gave him something completely different - what was up with that? How did she do it? She both treated him like someone she was close to and could share her feelings with, and like the complete asshole he knew he was - but it was almost in a fond way.
“Wanna skip out on trust falls?” he gave her a way out of her most hated exercise.
It was not just about the control issues, it was also about being big and too heavy and being terrified that the losers in the group wouldn’t be able to catch him - her. Would not be able to catch her. Because it wasn’t like he had weight issues or anything.
“Hell yes,” she muttered. “If that Jim guy gets weird with me one more time about some unspoken thing he thinks we have… I might actually drop him. By accident.”
Her air quotes on those last two words were kind of adorable, because even though she was really trying to be subtle about their sotto voce conversation, she didn’t exactly manage to be quiet. The drama just lover her, and she loved it right back. And he was absolutely going to ignore that he ever even thought the word adorable in relation to Bunch.
“Mr. Whitefeather is talking to Coach Wilson,” he spotted them from the corner of his eye. “That is all the distraction we’ll need.”
Bunch nodded solemnly and followed him into the hallway, where it was quiet and no one would force them to address their body issues head on.
He really did not mean to find another thing he had in common with Bunch, but he wasn’t surprised about it any longer. For some reason their broken pieces seemed to align.
“Let me guess,” he decided to take the lead, “Josh Chan is once again being an indecisive, secretive, hypocritical - wait, let me rephrase that in words he might actually understand. Josh Chan is being a dumb-dumb?”
The fury he received in return was almost soothing. Maybe she’d run after him with a sharp object again - maybe this time she would end up straddling him. More than one of his dreams had started that way.
“You don’t understand our love,” she hissed at him, not realizing how ridiculous she sounded.
Still, his laughter was not quite welcomed - not that he cared about that. He didn’t!
“I’m sure the idea of the jock falling for the drama queen is just as enthralling in real life as it was in your favorite movie,” he rolled his eyes emphatically, “but in real life we don’t sing catchy songs about the status quo in the cafeteria.”
Sure, it had happened once in a dream, but he tried not to put too much stock in those unless they recurred as often as Rebecca did these days. When someone showed up in his brief moments of peace for four days in a row, it was time to do something about it. And he’d been telling himself that for about a week now. An eleven day streak was no joke.
“You’ve seen it,” Bunch was just delighted.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he kept a straight face - acting.
The rage had completely left her, and he was left kind of disappointed by it. There was no use for her woobifying him - he preferred her anger, because at least that way there was a chance she’d unleash the passion she’d been holding back. If she actually used the word adorable to refer to him his balls would shrink up into his body.
Why did he care so much about what she thought of him?
Because he was an idiot, that was why.
------
It took her more than a few minutes to realize that they were the only ones left who were still rehearsing. Everyone else appeared to have left - even Mr. Whitefeather and Coach Wilson appeared to have departed (hopefully together).
She kinda shipped it.
For some reason she and Nathaniel had been isolated from the rest of the group for the last hour or so of rehearsal - Mr. Whitefeather thought that their chemistry and their dance could use some work, and seeing as how the rest of the group was a major distraction even when one was not faced with seriously inconvenient feelings of lust for an asshole scene partner, they’d decided to do their practicing in the other room.
At least, that was why she decided - she wasn’t even going to think about the possibility of the inconvenient feelings being mutual. She had Josh - she would have Josh, anyway - and there was no way she would continue to think about Nathaniel in this manner.
“Okay, once more with feeling,” Nathaniel was breathing heavy.
So of course it was not helping that he’d stripped off a few layers, leaving him in a thin tank top that left those Arms bare. He had good arms. Those were good arms to have.
They were doing the dance scene again, both not even daring to attempt the scene they really had to work on: the happy ending, kiss included. That was just way too much to even consider at this point.
She just really wanted to be Josh Chan’s official girlfriend before she even attempted to kiss Nathaniel.
“One last time,” she warned. “I have plans tonight.”
Okay, Josh saying that he might be at a party did not really qualify as plans, but she was still going to go to this guy Hector’s place in hopes of seeing Josh.
Wow, she almost had flashbacks to that one time with Greg at Beans’ place. But that was a long time ago and Greg was happily studying business at Emory now.
“I’m sure Hector’s mom will be pleased to see you,” Nathaniel was too astute for her sanity.
Also, he was completely on the nose about the seriously weird situation with Hector and his mother. Most parents didn’t exactly stay for the party - heck, most parents didn’t even know that there would be a party. But Hector’s mother was different, desperate to cling to her youth in her disturbingly close connection to her teenage son.
Ugh, she really did not want to think about that podcast.
“Just dance with me already,” she huffed, stepping closer to him.
For once, Nathaniel was quiet, almost too quiet. He just bowed formally, asking her to dance as the start of their detailed choreography.
Funny, he almost looked princely as he leaned over her hand, kissing it gently rather than faking it for the stage. Glitter exploded inside of her, mostly in her stomach, as she felt herself flush.
She loved courtly gestures like this, the cheesy romance that everyone thought was overrated and ridiculous. To her it just said that the other person was making an effort to seduce you - and when she wasn’t completely blinded by her teenage hormones, she absolutely wanted to be seduced slowly but surely.
“Your highness,” she muttered, careful to stay in character.
It did not matter that she was wearing sweaty workout clothes, and that the silly placeholder crowns on their heads had cost about a dollar, because Prince Nathaniel had swept her off her feet and into the soothing steps of a waltz.
He was an excellent leader, even with a stubborn partner such as her. She could actually trust him to lead her in these steps, trust him to keep her close to him, trust him to keep her safe on stage. Off stage, she wasn’t so sure - out of rehearsal he was still dangerous to her peace of mind. But while she was dancing with him she could pretend that she was Ella and he was her charming Prince.
Every time they did these the steps were more fluid, and it became easier and easier to let the glitter win. He was charming, and tall (very tall), and he danced like a dream. And when he looked at her, eyes darker than she remembered them being, she simply had to press herself a little bit closer to him.
They’d worry about fitting her supposedly big dress in between them when they had to - not yet though. Not right now.
As they started whirling towards the ending, she wondered what it would be like when they finally reached the kiss, the happily ever after. He would have to stoop down, and she would have to reach so far up in her heels, but it would be magical.
With a final twirl, she let herself lean back in his strong grip, now trusting him completely - at least in this. He would never let her fall, not on stage. Not just because it would make him look like a bad partner, but also because maybe, just maybe, he’d actually grown a little fond of her.
It was kind of pathetic, while at the same time being oddly flattering.
She looked up at him to find him once again looking down at her from hooded eyes. She had to look back, had to hold his gaze even when she felt herself flushing. It was a powerful thing, having all of his attention in this way.
How long had she been leaning like this? Mere seconds? Forever? She didn’t know and didn’t much care.
Slowly, finally, he pulled her up, settling her against his solid chest. He was just so much taller than her, and so warm, and that damn tank didn’t do anything to hide it. Her own clothing had also become seriously inadequate at hiding how affected she was by him.
This was a serious problem.
Why didn’t this happen with Josh? Why didn’t Josh give her goosebumps? Why was it Nathaniel Plimpton of all people?
With an almost mournful sigh, she took a step back.
“And, that’s it for today,” she cut through the spell weaved around the two of them.
“Right,” Nathaniel sounded almost dazed there. “You have plans.”
She started gathering her stuff on auto-pilot, head still somewhere roughly ten minutes ago. Her script, her vocal book, her water bottle, pens and other knick knacks - she couldn’t remember how to properly store them in her bag, so she threw it all in and hoped it would come out okay.
“I’ll walk with you,” Nathaniel waited for her to finish packing.
It would be rude not to let him. That was why she nodded, that was why she let him. It had nothing to do with her actually wanting to spend a few extra minutes with him. She’d been spending more than enough time with him for Paula to start taking notice - her best friend had not been happy with the perceived disinterest in the Chan Plan.
“Are you actually being nice now?” she was very aware of how flirtatious that particular statement came out.
“Dream on, Bunch,” he grinned as he held the door for her. “I would never.”
They walked the empty hallways together - it was starting to get dark, and the wind was gusting against the doors. She was not looking forward to going out in that.
Nathaniel reached for the door, and they both shared a look. One last moment together before the wind would blow them both away into their separate directions - as it should, she knew that. She just forgot for a little while.
The door wouldn’t open.
“It’s locked,” Nathaniel said.
“Well, unlock it,” she waited for him to do just that.
It was a stupid joke, but she couldn’t blame him for making it. A dark school, just the two of them - it was a recipe for disaster.
“Unlike what you might believe,” Nathaniel went off on a tangent, “Alohomora doesn’t actually work in real life.”
Did he just say what she thought he said? Did he actually just say that?
That was almost adorable and potentially life-changing.
“You are such a Slytherin,” she rolled her eyes at him.
“Cunning, ambitious, resourceful,” he listed, grinning the whole time. “I don’t consider those bad traits. You’re just a jealous wannabe Gryffindor.”
Well that was just blatantly wrong. She saw no benefits to being a Gryffindor - she was smart and valued intelligence in other people. Clearly, Nathaniel did not get her at all.
“I am a proud Ravenclaw,” she protested. “And you’re a not so secret nerd. What, you watched a movie?”
He probably watched one of the movies to impress a girl or something, on a date that led to that random girl eventually ending up in the backseat of Nathaniel’s fancy car. She’d heard the rumors - she knew all his moves even though he’d only tried a couple on her.
“I’ve read all the books,” he refuted her claim. “I got mono freshman year. I had to do something to kill the time, and the housekeeper had bought all the books for her nerdy son.”
She was kind of charmed by it, picturing that awkward sick freshman devouring the books, at home in his freaking mansion. He’d clearly identified with the wrong characters - she was thinking Draco Malfoy - but at least he’d actually read the books.
“You totally have a Slytherin tie at home, don’t you?” she flirted, stepping a little closer to him.
“I might,” he tried to act so casual. “You want to see it, don’t you?”
So it was more than just the tie. Noted, Nathaniel, noted. One way or another she was going to see that tie - and everything else he had hidden at home.
Surely she could think of some kind of scheme that would involve getting access to his room - probably without taking her clothes off.
That could just be a bonus.
Oh wow, her brain was totally betraying her right now and she didn’t even mind it that much.
She was the first to lean in, placing her hand on his shoulder to pull him down to her level. He went along with it rather easily, a hand on her waist as if they were about to start a whole other dance, and they both already knew the steps to that one.
This time, he would let her lead, let her pull him even closer so that their foreheads were touching.
“Can’t be with Cedric if you’re already with Ron,” he just had to go there.
“Stop talking dirty,” she whispered.
Was she really going to do this? Was she really going to kiss Nathaniel Plimpton the Third, right here in a dark school hallway?
Yes, yes, she was, she decided as she finally bridged the last inches.
A fraction of an inch from her goal, she was started by a loud noise.
Of course that was when that damn Gavin kid showed up, banging on the door with the janitor’s keys in his stupid hand.
....
AN: SO THAT HAPPENED! Evil, who me? Also, please let me know what you think. I’m getting the first half of my wisdom teeth removed tomorrow so I’m gonna need some good things this weekend ;)

Guest Post: Eric Fuller--Ticketing 2020. New Decade, Who Dis?
Eric originally published this post on Medium. I wanted to share it with y’all because he highlights the utility of loyalty programs. I’ve been a huge fan of those going back to the years when Howard Schultz owned the Sonics and had a loyalty program that is still a decade beyond what any entertainment property is offering now.
Welcome to the camp
I guess you all know why we’re here
My name is Tommy and I became aware this year
…….
Tickets, tickets, tickets. What’s new, what’s old and of what should you become aware? Well, let’s start here: everything you learned in the past decade is going out the window. The combination of big data, dynamic pricing and the blurring of the primary, secondary and ancillary ticketing sources into one big amorphous mass combined with the accelerating bias toward knowing just exactly who is in each seat is rewriting everything we once thought we knew.
First, the U.S. government hasn’t yet given up investigating how ticketing really works. There’s a new set of hearings by the Oversight and Investigations subcommittee in Washington D.C. on February 26, 2020. (Live stream at 10 am EST link: http://bit.ly/37ZNkjM)
It’s part of Congress’ ongoing efforts to figure out what’s lurking behind the curtain and under the hood of the major ticket markets.
The hearing, titled: In the Dark: Lack of Transparency in the Live Event Ticketing Industry is discussed in this article from TicketNews:
https://www.ticketnews.com/2020/02/house-ticketing-industry-hearing-february-26/
The house committee on Energy and Commerce summoned leaders of the biggest ticketing companies to the hearing:
https://files.constantcontact.com/7c26540f001/ddf566f8-5694-4804-933f-540fcb95b722.pdf
The leaders anticipated are truly powerful:
Amy Howe President & Chief Operating Officer Ticketmaster
Bryan Perez Chief Executive Officer AXS
Stephanie Burns Vice President and General Counsel StubHub
Ryan Fitts Vice President, Legal Affairs Vivid Seats
Don Vaccaro Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer TicketNetwork
Joe Choti President & Chief Executive Officer Tickets.com
At the same time, in the EU (or what’s left of it) there is a new push to outlaw the secondary market:
https://www.thesun.ie/news/5123468/legislation-ticket-touts-eu-approval/
And, Pearl Jam is trying to crash the party by writing its own letter about how to best regulate ticketing:
https://www.politico.com/newsletters/huddle/2020/02/18/what-pearl-jam-wrote-in-a-letter-to-rep-frank-pallone-488349
But, Representative Bill Pascrell isn’t interested in what they have to say:
https://www.insidernj.com/press-release/pascrell-rejects-pearl-jam-criticism-boss-act/
The biggest wild card to start off these hearings may be the now complete acquisition of StubHub by Viagogo. How big a deal is this? Think if Uber were bought by Tesla. Two disruptive companies, consolidated, led by Eric Baker, a man who doesn’t just march to his own tune — he composes it and makes you sing it even if the refrain is disharmonious. This company combines scale, global reach and a complete ferocity in approach. They won’t just move fast and break things. I predict they’ll invent new paradigms of how to blur primary and secondary markets, consolidate their own acquired inventory and that supplied by broker feeds, and create new pricing mechanisms to break away from the rest of the industry who’s only move to date has been to keep bumping up their fee percentages.
We’re not gonna take it
Gonna break it
Gonna shake it
Let’s forget it better still
……..
Blaming “scalpers” for high prices isn’t new for 2020, but it’s still surprising given that the global resale market for tickets will likely exceed $20 billion this year. Even more surprising, once fierce opponents such as Rage Against The Machine are “scalping” their own tickets in a strange blend of allowing both Platinum pricing into the primary distribution of their tickets while they hold back 10% of their ticket inventory in order to sell them for extra high prices with the excess money collected donated to charity.
This is an interesting take on “if you can’t beat them, join them.” It’s reminiscent of Metallica putting 92,000 tickets directly into the secondary market, but enacted with a social conscience. What’s not to like? If you want a ticket to the show, and you have the extra money, buy what’s left which are these highly inflated tickets and soothe yourself knowing the excess cost you paid went to do good rather than into the pockets of the half demented, lecherous spawn of Satan or however the media today wishes to portray those entrepreneurs who place their own capital at risk to take ownership of tickets which hold no value once an event takes place. Just one small problem though, the secondary market pricing runs purely on supply and demand. Hi demand, low supply equals high prices. Low demand, high supply equals low prices. Because, you know, math.
RATM is putting their embellished tickets (“now, with a free capital infusion to the worthy cause of our choice”) on sale for a price which is higher than that at which the free market is trading their tickets. In this truly convoluted world, the tickets being scalped by real scalpers are a better deal than the tickets being scalped by the band trying to block scalpers. Or, more cynically, the professionals who assess risk and value in the secondary market and move prices to balance supply and demand like a Vegas sports book moves odds are better at pricing at scale than a band whose intention is to completely dominate their own ticket distribution when they might be better served working on their chord progressions.
It was Kid Rock who really did this one right. Remember a few years ago when he paired up with Wal*Mart, dictated to Ticketmaster what their fees would be and put all the tickets in the arena for sale at $20, except for the best 3,000 or so which he simply sent into the secondary market to fetch whatever the market would bear? You can’t micro-manage prices on a tour of 10,000+ seat venues. It’s better to let most of the people get a $20 ticket and, if I recall, the beer prices were also capped at very friendly prices. For those who just absolutely have to be close to the front, they were welcome to pay what that cost. For everyone else, it was welcome to my house where the “Cowboy with the top let back and the sunshine shining” could “give a toast to the sun, drink with the stars, get thrown in the mix and tossed out of bars.”
See me, feel me
Touch me, heal me
See me, feel me
Touch me, heal me
…….
Moving front and center this year is a new focus on an old friend: loyalty programs. I keep hearing more and more about markets building out programs to mimic airline frequent flyer incentivization. There’s discounts, free returns, early access, discounts, vouchers — you name it, someone’s got it. The only thing I haven’t seen yet is the companion pass, but undoubtedly somebody has a power point slide ready to go arguing one way to fill an partially sold arena is to offer a free companion ticket. That, in venue speak, is how to bring in one more mouth to fill with liquor, salty snacks and one more body on which to hang a newly purchased t-shirt, hoodie or ball cap. Because no one likes to go to live events alone, an extra ticket is almost as good as a puppy for getting attention among the singles or not so singles given this new age of polyamory. I won’t ever forget once in the day selling an Insane Clown Posse ticket to a fellow over Craigslist who was so excited to go that he offered me his girlfriend for the evening. When I declined he was truly crestfallen to discover that, although I like the band, I didn’t identify as a Juggalo, wasn’t really in the mood to fly to Detroit for some curious version of tit for tat, and although I’m always open to adventure, really thought I’d prefer to preserve the relationship I held dear.
I’m a huge fan of incentive reward programs. I was there at the inception of the AA Advantage and UA Mileage Plus programs. These programs tilted all the assumptions of travel planners. Executives who would have never thought to make a stop enroute to their destination now spent hours charting out a five segment roundtrip so they could earn a free first class airline ticket to Disneyland.
Truly, airline miles presaged crypto. Miles acted as a store of value which could be exchanged for cash by selling to a broker, or for travel benefits such as airline seats or hotel rooms. It took years before the airlines figured out what governments have long known: currency devaluation. But, once the genie was let loose, publishing new and less favorable award charts requiring higher and higher numbers of miles to redeem a flight became standard practice until the newest trend of simply publishing no chart at all began to take hold. Now, on certain airlines like Delta, the price to convert miles to a seat is whatever the price is that day. There’s no longer a chart like in the old days to tell you that first class roundtrip is 100,000 miles, while coach is only 45,000.
Loyalty programs work. But, they have to be carefully designed. People are smart and they quickly figure out the loopholes and ways to maximize their benefits. One major food company to put codes redeemable for mileage beneath the peel off foil of pudding cups. It seemed like a great idea. The company drove sales and the participating airlines got money to participate. But, there’s little value in a small number of airline miles. Somebody bought enough cups to earn 1.2 million miles and donated the pudding within to charity in return for receiving their help to peel off the labels.
Man Gets Millions of Air Travel Miles from Pudding Cups
David Phillips of Davis, California, really did rack up millions of frequent-flyer airline miles as described in a…
www.snopes.com
Mileage times a million is significant. Nobody saw that coming. Well, almost nobody. There is a small group of people who made a market in those miles, me among them. I bought and sold 20 billion miles while I went to graduate school. That was really fun.
Want one more? The U.S. mint sells rolls of collectable coins which have never been circulated. You could buy them with your credit card and the mint would ship the coins to you for free. How long do you think it was before people with a mileage credit card began buying coins $10,000 at a time to get 10,000 miles. Then, when the coins arrived, still in their wrappers, took the coins to the bank, deposited them, and used the $10,000 to pay off their credit card. Do that twice a month and you’ve got 240,000 miles for free. Ultimately, the mint caught on, so that game’s over but there’s always another way to play.
Listening to you, I get the music
Gazing at you, I get the heat
Following you, I get climb the mountain
I get excitement at your feet
…….
DEMAND ( demand.area120.com ), the new product from Google is another lightning strike at the established order. Ticketing has not yet truly had a tech disruption. Yes, I know that mobile tickets are rapidly making paper stock tickets irrelevant, and that electronic secondary markets have broadened distribution, but let’s pull back the lens. Ticketing is still a tug of war where acts, shows and teams seek two things: fans and venues. There is an entire industry built of people and companies who have built the relationships to route tours, secure venues, assure the stages get built and the sound systems function and handle the mundane day to day problems when there are people and trucks moving from city to city.
What happens when technology replaces much of the work these people — the promoters — have done old school? It is still the promoter who sets ticket prices by giving the primary market the marching orders of when and how to move pricing. And, it is the promoter in conjunction who is making the decisions of which cities to play and at what sized venue. These are still “gut” decisions.
But, DEMAND and similar data driven tools may change the game. What happens when all of the pertinent information which used to take a lifetime in the business is available on a smart phone? There is an instructive example: when’s the last time anyone used a travel agent? It used to be that if you wanted an airline ticket, it was the travel agent who got it for you. They had the special computer system that could reserve a flight and issue the ticket on the special ticket paper which the airlines required they keep locked in a safe at night. And, they booked your hotel room by calling the phone numbers listed in a directory which weighted about ten pounds and listed contact information for every significant hotel in the world. Then, the internet and computers made public the ability to book flights and hotels yourself. Making reservations for planes and rooms became self-serve friendly. In March, 2002 most airlines told the travel agents who had served them since their inception that, thank you very much, we won’t need you anymore. Instead of paying agents a 10% + commission for each sale, these airlines would now pay nothing. It was up to the travel agents to add a surcharge to the price of the tickets to cover their services. As you might expect, once their “free” service was no longer free, most people quit using agents and went to the internet to book their own flights.
What does this mean for live event promoters? Well, the parallels are pretty clear. If demand, pricing and routing can be divined by easily available technology, then promoters have only two remaining virtues: the upfront money it takes to build the tour and the capacity to manage the day to day decisions which have to be made with so many moving parts. If there’s data to predict a tour’s profitability, then there will probably be risk capital available to fund it, particularly in a world with tiered distribution: primary and secondary prices can be made to work together rather than against each other. Assuming the act can secure funding to mount their tour, they can hire a tour manager to handle the issues which arise on the road.
What happens next? I think the venue owners have the most risk. Their building are a lot like hotels. They have no value unless they are filled. And, as more companies compete to build venues, there are more and more choices around the world. If promoters get marginalized, the next domino to fall is the ability of venue owners to maintain their margins. Ultimately, it only takes two competing similar venues to start a bidding war. Three venues would assure one. Again, here’s an example: in Los Angeles AEG owns Staples Center and MSG owns the Forum. Either is a great venue for an act looking to sell 12,000 + tickets. They are fighting hard to confirm acts, offering benefits at other similar venues they own in order to get the L.A. show. But, here’s the twist: Steve Ballmer (Microsoft billionaire) owns the Los Angeles Clippers and he wants to build them their own arena very close to the Forum. MSG is fighting in every forum: politically, in court, lobbying the neighborhood to prevent that venue from being built. Why? Because then there would be three similar venues competing in L.A. and we’re only one step away from someone building the venue equivalent of Priceline.
As we enter this next decade, the convergence of big capital, artificial intelligence, mobile ticketing and the increasing demand for live entertainment by a generation which gets all its needs served by smartphone in milliseconds will be transformative. In every instance where prices get out of hand, or supply and demand are imbalanced the markets correct and there’s reversion to the mean. For me, when I’m unsure of what to expect next, I look to the sages of the past, like Pete Townshend who wrote the song threaded through this piece. Ultimately, in commerce as in politics, all power resides with the people. I can’t wait to hear them.
Right behind you, I see the millions
On you, I see the glory
From you, I get opinions
From you, I get the story
We’re Not Gonna Take It — The Who
Let me know what you think.

Dart Adams presents The Top 50 Hip Hop Albums, EP’s & Mixtapes Of 2009 (The Final Top 200)
This is a list of what I consider to be the Top 200 Hip Hop LP’s, EP’s & mixtapes from this year so far. Please keep in mind that in order for me to even narrow this list to 200 I had to exclude all instrumental albums with the exception of Exile’s “Radio” (as it could’ve easily been Album Of The Year) otherwise it would’ve just been ridiculous and impossible to narrow to just 200 Hip Hop albums. This is the final time I do this, after three years I’m sure you all get the point I’m trying to make by now.
Also keep in mind that I’ve heard slightly less than 700 different projects this calendar year (my gmail account was bananas). I’m sure that my Bloggerhouse brethren Eric & Travis have quite a few projects in mind that I missed. That should give you all an idea as to just how deep 2009 was with quality material that you probably never even heard of.

'Supernatural' Winchester brothers somewhere between heaven and hell
Last week’s episode of Supernatural had something that never fails to make me a very happy fan indeed:  The Winchesters listening to each other and trusting each other and telling each other the truth. THANK YOU, SHOW! (And writer Davy Perez). That alone is enough to make a good episode imho. But actually, there was one more thing that will always make me happy – Winchesters in glasses. Is it hot in here? So let’s talk about what I liked first, and then I’ll get to the things that didn’t quite work for me. I really really loved that last conversation between Sam and Dean, where Sam comes clean about working with the BMoL and Dean, instead of flying off the handle and feeling threatened and betrayed and thus shutting down, instead hears Sam out and they come to an agreement. Dean isn’t anywhere near trusting them – and I don’t think Sam is either – but the brothers are on the same page about cautiously taking what they can from the BMoL while still retaining their independence as hunters. How easy that will be I’m not at all sure, but the important thing is that the brothers are together in the decision. I don’t know if I’ve ever loved Sam more than when he steeled himself and told his brother the truth. Sam: Either way, I shouldn’t have lied to you, and I’m sorry, man. Dean: (not walking away or even looking away) Well, okay. What do you want me to say? Do I like it? No. Do I trust them? Hell no. But you’re right. And Sam, in return, waits to pick up the next call from the BMoL until Dean gives him the go ahead. That conversation, and its upshot, are emblematic of where the brothers are this season. It’s because Dean feels some sense of security in his relationship with his brother that he’s able to not run away or panic, as he would have in other seasons. He knows Sam isn’t going anywhere; as much as he told Sam to pick a side, I think he knows that Sam will always choose Dean. In fact, Dean’s comfort with telling Sam to pick a side in the first place is indicative of that sense of security. And I LOVE that. With all they’ve been through, I hope they know what we as viewers know – they will always pick each other. [caption id="attachment_43830" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Caps by @S_Verasini[/caption] I loved their brotherly banter throughout the episode too, from Sam’s disgust over Dean’s post-hunt skeeviness to knowing how many boxers Dean brought and just how dirty they are, inside out or not, to their playful jostling over whether to tell Gwen the truth about what happened. Dean: Trying to make you feel better. It was his idea. Sam: eye roll I will never not love a glimpse of domestic Winchesters, so Dean threatening to use the fancy shampoo that Sam (tries to) keep hidden from him was much appreciated. And Dean not wanting to let Sam drive, that was a nice piece of continuity, hearkening back over all twelve seasons. I also loved Crowley’s arc in this episode. I may have leaped up off my sofa when he ended up outsmarting Lucifer after all – in part because go Crowley and in part because I love love love when Show can still surprise me! Mark Pellegrino and Mark Sheppard remain absolutely delicious together, every scene crackling. Including Lucifer in a bridle, which necessitated his comment of ‘kinky.’ I mean, what else could he say? I also love that Crowley’s relationship with the Winchesters and Castiel continues to evolve. Dean and Crowley teaming up again (shades of their epic bromance a few seasons back!) was wonderful – pretty sure Crowley thought Dean looked as hot in those hellhound glasses as the rest of us did. Their conversation was just the right amount of snark and ribbing. Dean: Maybe I’ve rubbed off on you. Crowley: Maybe I’ve rubbed off all over you. Not entirely the same thing, Crowley. I may have laughed out loud. But there’s also truth underneath – and Dean’s thank you for saving Cas was clearly heartfelt, even if Dean himself is still too smart to entirely trust the King of Hell. And then we get Sam’s thank you to Crowley too, with the brothers once again on the same page. This was a big move forward in Crowley’s story – but of course, Sam and Dean don’t know that Crowley isn’t telling them that Lucifer isn’t actually in the cage.  Or that he has ‘big plans’ for the imprisoned-in-his-lovely-Mark-Pellegrino-vessel Lucifer. What are you up to, Crowley? I can’t wait to find out! I also liked the guest stars, including Kelvin the angel (Nathan Mitchell) teaming up with Cas (though he needs some coaching on how to pronounce Castiel). Castiel’s  story arc also took a surprising turn in this episode, as Kelvin urges him to come back ‘home.' To Heaven. He makes a compelling case, and Cas makes the surprising decision to go hear Joshua out – without telling the Winchesters. I feel for Cas, never truly at home, always feeling like an outsider no matter how often the Winchesters assure him that he’s family. I don’t blame him for wanting to hear Heaven out, but I also don’t trust the angels, not even one who seems nice enough like Kelvin. I loved the character of Gwen (Angelique Rivera, who did a great job), an obvious parallel for Sam – smart, courageous, determined – so that when she talked about lying to the person she’s closest to, both Sam and the viewers knew that this was a parallel for Sam and Dean. Gwen: Why couldn’t I just tell him the truth? But I didn’t. I lied to make things easier. We find out in the last scene that Sam heard her – and stopped lying to his brother. I particularly loved that she kicked the Winchesters out of her house when they insulted her intelligence by trying to tell her that Marcus was killed by a bear. Their “you’ve been through a lot, sometimes the mind plays tricks on you…’ sounded way too much like ‘stop being a hysterical female,' and I loved that she wasn’t having it. Kudos, Davy! Other things I liked?  Dean’s small soft smile when koalas are mentioned. I’m guessing that was Jensen, and I loved it. Gifs please, fandom! The final showdown with the renegade hellhound was beautifully filmed by Serge Ladouceur and directed by Nina Lopez-Corrado, who did the hellhounds justice throughout the episode. They could so easily be cheesy, but Nina never lets that happen. She did a fabulous job of amping up the suspense every time we saw things through ‘hellhound vision’, especially as Sam and Dean meet with Gwen and Ramsey is watching the whole thing. I had goosebumps! Seeing the hellhound through the lens of Sam’s glasses on the ground was brilliant! And I love that Gwen saved Sam using the iconic green cooler and that Sam ended up killing the hellhound blind. We’re getting a lot of Sam F—king Winchester this season! I didn’t love everything about the episode, though the quibbles are pretty minor. As much as I enjoyed Sam ribbing Dean about needing a shower, Dean is usually more of a neat freak, and he hates having ‘fluids’ all over him. I’m not sure he would have been so blasé about being covered in monster guts, or so gleeful about it, let alone flicking it all over the room. I guess maybe he just wanted to gross Sam out, but it didn’t seem entirely Dean. And while I usually love love love the meta episodes, I think I love them more when they’re just that – episodes. This episode infused some in-jokes and meta comments throughout, which sometimes jarred me. Give me an entire meta episode ala Robbie Thompson, and I’ll eat it up with a spoon, Show! I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love The Walking Dead crossover as Dean comes in swinging Lucille – and commenting that his dad loved it -  perfect shout out to Jeffrey Dean Morgan. But it did throw me out of the story for a minute. And were the Queen of England references a GISHWHES shout out to Misha?? Also, I don’t understand why Sam keeps giving the BMoL so much credit. THEY killed the Alpha Vamp? Umm Sam, pretty sure that was YOU!  Unless he just wanted to convince Dean to work with them, but I’d really like to see someone give Sam the credit he deserves for saving the day like that. Including Sam himself! So where is the Colt now? Does Dean know it’s back in play? What will Cas decide about Heaven, and what does it want with him? What are Crowley’s big plans for Lucifer, and how will they affect the rest of the world? And who are the ‘old men’ pulling the BMoL’s strings?? So many questions going forward, but with Supernatural, that’s usually a good thing. The episode was aptly titled, and I think implies more than we know right now – where is Heaven in this big board game? And where is hell, with Crowley once again truly in power and able to make changes. Are the BMoL aligned with either, or a separate force to be reckoned with? That leaves the Winchesters perhaps truly between Heaven and Hell. And, if Supernatural plays out as it always has, the only ones who can save the poor humans caught in the crossfire. Check out next week's Supernatural Ladies Drink Free above.

SHARE THIS SHARE THIS Skimm for February 27th Skimm’d in robes QUOTE OF THE DAY “A text message sent while drunk” - How Oxford Dictionaries defines “drunk text.” Thanks for the clarity. Skimm This PLOT TWIST THE STORY Last night was the Oscars. “Moonlight” won best picture. “La La Land” did not. WHAT HAPPENED? Bonnie and Clyde had the wrong envelope, and announced “La La Land” as best picture. The film’s team came out for their speech. Then…never mind. “Moonlight” was the real winner. Host Jimmy Kimmel blamed Steve Harvey, then himself. PwC - the accounting firm that oversees the ballots - apologized for the not-so-classic mix-up and said they’re investigating what happened. WHAT ELSE HAPPENED? Kimmel - aka the Candy Man - spared no one in his opening monologue. Not even Meryl. Definitely not Mel. And he’s still not friends with Matt Damon. A bus load of tourists got punked. Things got political, too. Kimmel thanked President Trump for taking the spotlight away from that time “it seemed like the Oscars were racist.” Then he did some live tweeting. Meanwhile, the audience had all the feels during the In Memoriam part of the show. Jennifer Aniston - who introduced the segment - got choked up while talking about Bill Paxton, the actor who passed away at age 61 due to surgery complications the day before. WHO WON? “Moonlight” took home best picture and best adapted screenplay. “La La Land” director Damien Chazelle is now the youngest best director winner ever. Mahershala Ali became the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar. Emma Stone, Casey Affleck, and Viola Davis picked up the other acting awards. Iranian director Asghar Farhadi won for best foreign film, but boycotted the show to protest Trump’s travel ban. WHO WON THE RED CARPET? Viola Davis and Naomi Harris brought the heat. The artist formerly known as The Rock was feeling blue. Emma Stone, Nicole Kidman, and Jessica Biel channeled Oscar gold. WHO DIDN’T? Casey Affleck officially, officially needs to shave. Dakota Johnson brought her Victorian apron. theSKIMM For a while it looked like the Oscars were going to be pretty predictable…and predictably looooong. Instead, it ended with one of the biggest plot twists in Hollywood history. Skimm This REPEAT AFTER ME... WHAT TO SAY WHEN THE PERSON CUTTING YOUR HAIR KEEPS FROWNING... Yeah, this isn’t going to work out. Yesterday, President Trump’s pick for secretary of the US Navy, Philip Bilden, pulled his name from the running. That’s because he didn’t think his business ties would pass an ethics review. He’s the third of Trump’s nominees to drop out, after labor nominee Andy Puzder and Army secretary nominee Vincent Viola both bowed out in recent weeks. Who’s also been shown the door? Some members of the media. Last week, the Trump administration blocked several media outlets (CNN, The New York Times, Politico) from an off-camera briefing with Press Secretary Sean Spicer. This is not normal. It’s unclear why these outlets were banned. But this comes as the White House has been pretty open about how unhappy it is with media coverage of Team Trump’s alleged ties to Russia. Then, over the weekend, President Trump said he’ll sit out this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner - the one where the press, the president, and a comedian roast each over lots of champagne. Trump’s the first president in decades to RSVP ‘no’ to the event. So…not getting warmer. Skimm This WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO JUST GOT HER FIFTH SPEEDING TICKET... So you think you’re a NASCAR driver? Yesterday, Kurt Busch won the Daytona 500. It’s like the Super Bowl for race car fans, except it kicks-off the start of racing season. After years of viewership taking a deep dive, NASCAR tried to amp up the excitement by having drivers race the 500 miles in three stages - instead of one long turn ’round and ’round the track. The change-up was supposed to make things more dramatic. Yesterday’s race involved multiple crashes, including a 16-car wreck. And Busch eked out the win in the final lap. Drama? Check. Skimm This WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR TEAM GOES ON AN OFFSITE... The Dems spent the weekend doing trust falls too. They elected former labor secretary Tom Perez to be the new DNC chairman. He was in a tough race against Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) - who was the guy supported by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT). After Perez won, he tapped Ellison to be his right-hand man. TBD on whether they’ll have the deeply divided party singing kumbaya. Skimm This SKIMM MONEY ROL: Stands for return on life.
In the comments section feel free to gripe, bitch and/or moan about Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Wale, Fabolous, Busta Rhymes or “insert wack rapper’s name here” lackluster ass album not being in my top 200. Also feel free to add albums, EP’s & mixtapes I missed (like Pill’s). I head mad albums that are still in my rotation that missed this cut (Moka Only made so many albums I stopped him at one so “Summer Notations”, “Carrots & Eggs” & Ron Contour’s”Hot Dog” aren’t on this list).
I’m sure listened to WAY more Hip Hop than you this year (and I probably suffered irreparable damage because of it). All you gotta do to check every Friday of 2009 (both the reviews & Late Passes (For Doz Dat Slept) sections) on this blog for proof. Enjoy (or don’t) my final Poisonous Paragraphs list:
