Deleted Author Profile: TamrynEradani
Author and co-author of more than 50 fics, for a while TamrynEradani was one of the most popular authors in the fandom, especially known for their break-out BDSM fic, “Carry On.” They’re also one of the easiest deleted authors to talk about, because they gave warning before they deleted so people could save files and (as far as I know, anyway) gave blanket permission for copies of their works to be distributed.
Work Highlights:
Carry On, and its Timestamp (Explicit). 148,087 words (main story); 5,985 words (timestamp). No Archive Warnings Apply.
When Sam gets into Stanford, Dean needs a bigger paycheck than Bobby's garage can give him. Luckily, he knows a guy.
This is the original summary but it unfortunately gives little idea of what Carry On is actually about; basically, from a “fandom history” stand point, Carry On (written in 2013) created the BDSM genre for the Destiel fandom. While of course it wasn’t the first Destiel BDSM fic, and far from the only one even at the time it was published, it was such a major work in terms of popularity, and so well known and widely read that, especially in 2014 and 2015, almost every BDSM story that came out bore echoes of Carry On. The basic premise is: Dean needs money for Sam’s tuition, and so he decides to become a sub-for-hire, and is hired by Cas. Sound familiar? Well, Carry On did it first. (don’t take this as a judgement call or a statement on the quality of Carry On or any of the works that came after).
(Archivist’s Note: don’t expect me to write quite so much about every story, but unlike the vast majority of the fics in the Archive, I actually read Carry On, when it was still up on AO3, and so I can speak a little more than usual to it’s backstory and plot.)
Set Me Up, Buttercup (Teen+). 30,071 words. No Archive Warnings Apply.
Dean is the starting setter for his college's volleyball team. His plans for the year include winning Conferences, passing his classes, kicking Benny's butt at basketball, and making sure Ash remembers to eat and bathe on a semi-regular basis. He doesn't plan on meeting Cas Milton but once he does, Dean's carefully planned year changes.
TamrynEradani’sentry to the 2013 Dean/Cas Bing Bang is a college AU with art by crimsonswirls.
Time of My Life (Teen+). 35,940 words. No Archive Warnings Apply.
Dean Winchester is an ice dancer who is scrambling to find a new partner after his couldn't skate with him anymore. Castiel is an ice dancer who can't seem to keep a partner. They're each other's last chance but can they also be each other's best chance?
It’s been years since I read this but irc, Time of My Life isn’t a Cutting Edge AU - TamrynEradani had never seen the movie, I think is in one of their author’s notes - but if you’ve seen the movie you’d never guess that. As the summary makes clear it’s not a precise overlap, but there’s definite commonalities.
The Dean Smith ‘Verse (Explicit). 6 stories, 28,483 words. No Archive Warnings Apply.
Dean Smith is a man of routine. Castiel takes him apart.
Another BDSM AU; Dean Smith becomes the sub for Cas. As a side note, the verse includes a threesome with Benny, but is most definitely primarily a Destiel AU.
This Crooked Fish, co-written with clotpoleofthelord (Explicit). 3 stories, 52,249 words.
With the first Lady Knight in centuries, a tournament and Progress to honor a Royal Marriage, and the Crown Prince falling in love with the King of the Rogues, it's certainly not going to be a boring year in the kingdom of Tortall.
Written with Tamryneradani, who is no longer on the internet.
Note that This Crooked Fish is still available on AO3.
Interested in any of these or other works by TamrynEradani? There is a publicly accessible list of their most popular works, with links to download them, that can be found here. (the archive also reblogged this post earlier this week)
Or, click on the read more below to see a list of which TamrynEradani fics are available in the Archive, and which we’re still looking for!
Warning: While I am willing to distribute what I have - please contact me by DM for more information - if I hear anything from the author or their representative asking me not to distribute these fics I will cease to do so. Thank you for understanding!

Day 30: Halloween (1978)
Tumblr media
The original plan was to include Rob Zombie's Halloween film from 2008 in this final block, but then we learned that it actually came out in 2007, so the joke would have been lost. Also, it apparently sucks, so
Halloween is a 1978 slasher masterpiece written by Debra Hall and John Carpenter, who also served as the director. The film starts with the POV of an apparently (if the height of the cameraperson is anything to go by) very tall 6-year-old named Michael Myers, who murders his sister on Halloween 1963 and is sent to Smith's Grove sanitarium. 15 years later, he escapes and heads back to his hometown so he can kill some more.
Believe it or not, I haven't seen this film in its entirety before tonight. I've caught bits and pieces from when my cousin would have it on when we were kids, but this is the first time I've ever actually watched it. Rikka's seen the Rob Zombie remake, but otherwise she's in the same boat.
The great Jamie Lee Curtis headlines our cast in her debut role as Laurie, a high school girl who notices on Halloween 1978 that she's being stalked by some creep in a mask. That creep, it turns out, is now-21-year-old Michael Myers (played by Nick Castle and Tony Moran), who apparently just loves to kill teenagers. We also have Donald Pleasance as Dr. Sam Loomis, who served as Michael's psychiatrist and is trying to find him along with Sheriff Leigh Brackett (Charles Cyphers), the father of Laurie's friend Annie (Nancy Loomis). PJ Soles and John Michael Graham feature as kill fodder characters Lynda and Bob, and our principal cast is rounded out with Brian Andrews as Tommy and Kyle Richards as Lindsey, some kids who the main girls babysit.
Someone did their math wrong. We have Michael age 6 and Michael age 23 in the credits, yet Michael age 6 exists in 1963 and Michael age 23 exists in 1978. Somehow, Michael aged two extra years in the fifteen years between '63 and '78, I guess.
I honestly can't buy any of the teenage characters as teenagers, though that might just be a 70s thing. Jamie Lee Curtis delivered the best performance of the young cast, and I can certainly see why she became known as a Scream Queen. The adult performances were sort of hammy, but I think the film was going for that B-movie feel. Michael Myers has what is probably the second most famous breathing sound in cinematic history, right behind Darth Vader - I adore it.
The cinematography impressed me - Dean Cundy set up some pretty tight, claustrophobic shots when Michael was off killing, and there were some cool subtle shots involving our killer in the background. This film has a surprisingly small amount of blood for a Slasher feature, and the blood we did see didn't look particularly convincing, but that just lends to the B-movie feel.
John Carpenter's score is absolutely incredible. I mean, come on, EVERYONE knows the Halloween theme, even people who have never seen the film. It's just as iconic to the film's identity as Myers' silly William Shatner mask.
I really don't like the way Halloween frames mental health. There's this implication that the mentally ill are skeevy murderers. I don't think that Carpenter and Hall necessarily meant for that to come through, but it still just feels a little gross. Sure, there have been mentally ill serial killers throughout history, but... well, you know. I kinda wish it didn't come off that way.
Despite its issues, Halloween was a fun watch! I can absolutely understand why it's considered a grandparent of the Slasher genre and why Jamie Lee Curtis had such a successful career stemming from it. I'm sure that this film is beloved by many of you who might read this, and I completely get it. I had a fun 90 minutes.
Tomorrow is Halloween, and that means that this review series is finally coming to a close. Halloween itself had a ton of sequels, a remake, and a sequel to that remake. However, in 2018 - 40 years after the original film's release - another sequel came out, one that retcons everything after the first film...

Supernatural - ‘Lebanon’ Review
Tumblr media
What a lovely episode. It didn't feature a huge battle or the culmination of a major story arc. It wasn't a musical production with a large cast. It was small and personal, and deeply emotional.
Clearly, Sam should have been the one to wish for his heart's desire, because I bet it would have been what they wanted, that Dean be free of Michael. Instead, Dean held the pearl, and what he wanted more than his own life was his father back. Not a surprise, but it says a lot about Dean, doesn't it? That he wanted John Winchester more than he wanted to be free of the probability of eons of suffering? That in Dean's heart, just like when he went to Hell, he still doesn't believe he deserves to be saved?
This heartfelt Winchester reunion would have seemed bogus if John and his boys had just fallen into each others' arms. John, an active hunter fresh from 2003 who got dropped into the darkened bunker with his sawed-off in his hands, had trouble recognizing his own sons as they are in 2019, and who could blame him? It was almost a miracle that he didn't shoot first and ask questions after.
But once the truth set in, it was lovely. I keep using that word about this episode, but it bears repeating.
Tumblr media
The best scene was the one where John apologized to Sam for not being a good father. I honestly believe this was Jared Padalecki's best dramatic scene in the entire series. Sam told John that their argument was a lifetime ago, that he had thought for years of John on the floor of that hospital and how they never got to say goodbye. Sam was crying. John was crying. Of course, I was crying, too.
And during all of the bunker scenes, Dean's heart was in his eyes. This was what he had always wanted: the four of them together, his father expressing total love, pride, approval of him. And I loved how Dean was sensitive enough to leave his parents alone. Mary got to embrace her beloved husband one more time, touch him, kiss him, and I hope they did more than that while the boys were out shopping. Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith did a wonderful job expressing John and Mary's love and deep connection, especially when you consider that these two had only one scene together in the pilot episode way back in 2005. No need to mention that both of them look older. It wasn't important. The two actors aren't old enough to be J&J's parents, anyway.
I thought centering the reunion on a family dinner was, I'll say it again, lovely. These four people have never even had a family dinner together. Sam was a baby when Mary died, and Dean was only four.
Tumblr media
Like all of the best Supernatural episodes, "Lebanon" started out funny and ended tragically. Of course the boys couldn't have their father back, and I loved that John was the strong one. John was determined that they all simply enjoy being together one last time. John kept smiling at them, a genuine smile. He stayed positive. He gave Sam closure, and he gave Dean approval. He kept holding Mary's hand as if he couldn't bear to let her go. And he took a bit of it back to 2003 as a dream. It will have to be enough.
The rest of the episode was delightful, too. We've seen way too little of Lebanon, even though the Winchesters have been living there for six seasons. I enjoyed every single easter egg and callback, and I'm sure I didn't catch them all: the clown ghost; Max stealing the Impala like the valet in "Baby;" the Winchesters using the name Campbell, which is Mary's last name and an alias that actually means something to them. The movies at the Lebanon Vista Theatre included Hell Hazers and All Saints Day.
The three kids, Eliot, Max and Bea, got to find out who those two strange brothers were, and thought that monster hunters were incredibly cool. (Well, they are until you need them.) I also loved how Marta the post office clerk melted when Dean flirted with her, while she looked at Sam distastefully. How could anyone but a monster find Sam distasteful? I watched this episode with my son Daniel, who was going, "Yeah, let's take home an entire box of actively evil occult objects, because nothing could possibly go wrong with that." And "It's never a good sign when a teddy bear has no eyes and its mouth is sewn shut." I assume "Precious Pawn" was a reference to Lord of the Rings. Loved the dragon's breath. Laugh out loud.
Tumblr media
It was even nice to see Kurt Fuller as the nasty Zachariah again, although I hated seeing Castiel so hateful. It's sad to think of how Castiel would have been without his love for the Winchesters – although it would have been much sadder if Misha Collins hadn't been in the 300th episode. I'm glad Sam thought of the sigil so that he didn't have to kill alt-Castiel. Even though it wouldn't have mattered since time was reset and it never happened.
And the alternate timeline versions of Dean and Sam were a hoot. Especially Sam as a self-help guru with glasses. And kale.
Bits:
— This is Supernatural's 300th episode. Wow.
— There was no credit card for Jeffrey Dean Morgan in the opener. He got an end credit as "special guest star." Thoughtful, although I bet every fan of the show was already spoiled that he was going to be in this one.
— The date was the same as the episode air date: February 7, 2019. Skip day.
— I assume Mary didn't tell John that she's been dating Alternate Universe Bobby.
— The boys were at the pawn shop because of the skull of Sarah Good. She was a real person.
— As has been mentioned before, Lebanon, Kansas is the geographic center of the contiguous United States, a clever choice by the writers.
— The Agents of Doux put together an article on our favorite episodes of Supernatural. What do you think? Should "Lebanon" be on the list? It would absolutely be in my top twenty, that's for sure.
— We're getting a mini-hiatus. The next episode airs March 7.
Quotes:
Dean: (re: the dead pawn shop owner) "They always talk too much."
Eliot: "Where did they even come from? Them, or their weird sidekick with the trench coat? And what about that kid with the dumb Bambi look on his face all the time?"
Marta: (to Sam) "So you want me to give you an underage girl's address?"
Dean: "A serial killer clown. I mean, this is like the best/worst thing that's ever happened to you. You know, 'cause you love serial killers but you hate clowns." Sam: (frantically trying to burn the cigar box) "Yeah. I get it, Dean."
John: "So. You saved the world." Dean: "More than once." John: "Then it's all true. God, the Devil, you boys smack in the middle. Now you live in a secret bunker with an angel and Lucifer's kid." Dean and Sam: "Yeah." John: "And you've done this whole time travel thing before?" Dean: "Few times."
John: "I went out taking out Yellow Eyes. I mean, that was the point, right? Get the thing that killed Mom."
John: "Son, I am so sorry." Sam: "I'm sorry, too. But you did your best, Dad. You fought for us and you loved us. That's enough."
Dean: "According to the internet, you run a law firm and love kale." It's sad that even in the alternate timeline, the boys had no families.
Dean: "I googled me as well. Lot of beheadings."
Zachariah: "Earth, where you're always stepping in something. Come on, Constantine." Castiel: "I don't understand that reference." Zachariah: "You wouldn't."
Dean: (to Sam) "I'm good with who I am. I'm good with who you are." They're not angry young men anymore. They've grown up.
John: "I choose grateful. So to whatever brought us together, we owe you one. Amen."
Supernatural does time travel good. I could probably write about this episode for a few more hours, but I'd better stop here. Four out of four pearls,
Billie Doux has been reviewing Supernatural for so long that Dean and Sam Winchester feel like old friends. Courageous, adventurous, gorgeous old friends.

Adopting An Angel Part 1
Jensen x Danneel
Jensen x Child!Reader
Danneel x Child!Reader
Aaron Smith!Caseworker x Child!Reader
Tumblr media
Summary: The foster care system hadn’t treated YN well.  She is now being placed in the care of Jensen and Danneel.  They don’t know that she is a fan.
Word count: Barely anything
Warnings: fluff, convention fun, self-esteem issues.
Jared and Jensen walked out on stage for the Supernatural Dallas Convention.
Everyone showed their excitement through claps, screams and hollers.
“Hey everybody! Good time so far?” They laughed and told stories about their beloved show, and YN loved it.
She had saved and been gifted enough money for a photo op with Jensen and Jared. They were her heroes: the way they played Sam and Dean so well, and she couldn’t get enough of it all.
“Hey, sweetheart! What’s your name? Just you in the photo?”
“I’m YN. My friend is with me, but she didn’t pay for a photo. We’ve had fun.”
“Oh good! Do you want a specific pose?” Jared asked.
“No, just hug me please,” YN laughed.
“Okay, get in the middle! We’ll make a YN sandwich,” Jensen smiled. They took the picture, she hugged them again.
“Thank you!” She hugged them both and exited.
——————
Jensen and Danneel had their foster license for two months, but they had yet to receive a child from the state.  One day, they got a call.
“Mrs. Ackles? This is Aaron Smith from DFPS.”
“Oh, hi.”
“We have a child that is in need of a family to house her. Her name is YN and she is in her mid-teens.”
“Oh my gosh. Yes, we will take her. Absolutely,” Danneel didn’t even let him ask if they would take YN into their home.
“Okay, sounds great. I will be able to drop her off Friday, Does that work?”
“My husband will be here so that’s perfect. Thank you!”
“I will see you then.”
————————
“She here!” JJ ran toward her mom.
“Did you see her outside?” Danneel smiled at her daughter.
“Yes, wet’s go!” She dragged Danneel toward the front of the house.
Jensen opened the door while Danneel held JJ’s hand. The caseworker guided YN to the front door. She was wide-eyed, taking in the environment around her.
“Hi, YN. I’m Jensen,” he smiled and stuck out his hand.
“Hi- oh my-“ she froze. “I’m so sorry. Umm, I didn’t know you were the foster parents. Aaron, let’s go,” YN turned to walk back to the car.
“Wait!” Jensen ran around her to face her as she faced the street. “I take it you watch Supernatural?”
“SPN Family for life,” she smiled faintly. “I don’t want to hold you back from all of it though. What would you want to do with me?  I need to go,” she ducked her head and tried to go around him.
“You’re not a hindrance or a charity case,” he said as he blocked her path. “You’re YN, a beautiful girl who we want to know. Sure, I’m on TV, but that doesn’t stop me from loving my family, including you. Please give us a chance.”

Tim Burton: Tim Burton fans are ecstatic about Freeform’s 13 Nights of Halloween being changed to 31 Nights of Halloween! During this time period, Freeform plays many popular Halloween movies, including The Nightmare Before Christmas and The Corpse Bride.
Marvel: Marvel fans are debating the quality of the upcoming movie Venom. It seems there’s a clean split: You either love it or you hate it. A lot of controversy is spreading over one particular scene which won’t be spoiled here, but many people who have already seen it say it’s amazing and accurate to the comics. The movie is not part of the MCU and exists outside of the Spider-Man universe, setting it up for the perfect Venom solo movie. The movie hits theaters this Saturday. I personally think it will be an incredible movie, what about you?
Next to Blackpurrl with the Harry Potter, World News, and Animation fandoms-
Animation: New clips are out for Vivziepop’s Hazbin Hotel!
Harry Potter: The newest movie, The Crimes of Grindelwald, is set for release on November 6th this year. Just one month to go!

Now to Fyne with the Supernatural, Sherlock, YouTube, and Spooptober fandoms-
Supernatural - The wardrobe on Supernatural has become a trademark for so many of the show’s favorite characters. Early on, things like Dean’s leather jacket took on a life of its own, playing an essential part of the Winchester storyline. Dean inherited it from John, turning his staple style into a sentiment of how much he idolized his dad. For the first five seasons, the brown leather jacket (which we first see in the pilot episode) was almost thought of as Dean’s superhero attire. Then, in season 6, without even an explanation, the jacket was just gone. Where did it go? Well As it turns out, there was a very real reason for this vanishing act. When the cast was in Los Angeles for a photo shoot, their wardrobe was flown over from Vancouver. In the process, a few items were stolen. Among them was Dean’s iconic jacket, which was worn in so many memorable scenes. Who stole it? To this day we do not know. Since then, Dean’s look has undergone a few subtle changes. At first, there was somewhat of a “normal life”-looking coat that appeared at the beginning of season 6. Thankfully, that fad didn’t last long. Eventually, it changed over into an evolving selection military-style jackets, each perfectly-suited for his character. It’s now hard to imagine Dean without his current signature style.
Sherlock - Did you know Matt Smith auditioned to play Watson? Yes our beloved less down to earth Doctor was almost our very down to earth John Watson. He may be best known for playing a less down-to-Earth Doctor, but before he got the keys to the TARDIS, Matt Smith auditioned for the role of Dr. Watson. Although he can do less eccentric than the role he's best known for, Smith himself admits he'd probably have been a little too skewed to work as Sherlock's foil. Why Smith didn't get the role is kinda obvious when you think about it. Before Doctor Who he had only a handful of TV credits to his name, with his only big screen role. Martin Freeman may not have been the blockbuster leading man he is now, but he was at the very least recognisable to a British audience thanks to The Office.
YouTube - Art YouTubers are currently confusing fans as, unlike last year, the ones participating in inktober aren’t making daily videos. We can’t help but wonder if this is because of the ad-pocolypse and shrinking revenue, or if it is because they simply don’t feel up to it. What are your thoughts?
Spooptober - It is officially Spooptober! Expect creepy fun facts, stories, and tidbits throughout the month of October! This weeks fun fact is - did you know that the average high school student prefers Halloween over Valentines day? Who woulda thunk?
Lastly to Atlas with the Voltron, Movies, And Celebrities fandoms-
Voltron: An interview with Josh Keaton was posted on YouTube. In the interview, he was asked about what he thought about the show ending. He replied, “All of us really love the show. We’re sad to see it go. As for me, I don’t think I’m ready to stop being Shiro.”
Movies: So, um. Live action Teen Titans anyone? No?
Celebrities: Lin-Manuel Miranda is going to play a small role in Mary Poppins Returns.
Now to your weekly movie review by YoursTruly-
Movie review- Spider-Man 3
I’ve seen this movie many times before, and it’s my favorite in the Spider-Man franchise. The movie has a great plot and is throughly entertaining in general. The movie features Toby Maguire, who many people consider to be the best Spider-Man.
Now to Blackpurrl with the weekly trivia fact-
Trivia: A cricket's ears are on its front legs, just below the knees and they have four acoustic inputs. The openings in the crickets exoskeleton that act as ears, lead into chambers inside the legs, which connect to either side of the cricket, allowing sound to pass completely through the cricket.
And back to Atlas with the weekly book review-
Book Review: Cornelia Funke’s Inkheart is a modern day/not-so modern fantasy that will leave the reader on the edge of their seat. With a fantastic plot line and lovable characters, this book is hard to put down!
The comic at the end of the newsletter is brought to you by our very talented Blackpurrl. It’s titled “Atlas Initiation”. That’s all for this week, we’ll see you next week with another Fandom Newsletter!

Yes, Andrew Yang could be New York City's next mayor
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/yes-andrew-yang-could-be-new-york-citys-next-mayor/
Yes, Andrew Yang could be New York City's next mayor
The answer, to the astonishment of many, is yes. And with each passing day, time is running out for Yang’s rivals — a diverse field loaded with governmental, civic and business leaders — to chase him down.
In a year of death, drudgery and economic destruction, Yang, a tech entrepreneur whose moonshot 2020 presidential primary bid amassed more goodwill than votes, has distinguished himself from the pack with an uncomplicated message: He wants to make New York fun again. The defining clarity of his campaign has, for now, largely obscured the most powerful argument against it — that even for those who admire Yang’s ambition and joyful candidacy, the 46-year-old is still a political newcomer and ill-suited to lead the city out of its worst crisis since bankruptcy beckoned in the 1970s.
His time in the private sector, launching start-ups and then running a presidential campaign, he argued, made him New York’s best bet to juice the kind of recovery that delivers for both workers and their corporate bosses.
“There are a number of people who’ve been in government for years in this field, but many of us have felt let down by city agencies over the past number of months,” Yang said. “So you have to ask yourself, do you really think that someone who’s been embedded in these bureaucracies is going to be the best person to lead us out of this crisis?”
The stakes are stark — and Yang has sought to become a better-rounded candidate in his second campaign. His advocacy for a universal basic income and warnings that automation could decimate the American workforce, the pillars of the presidential run, have largely taken a backseat to talk about creating more affordable housing, attracting investments from business titans, who have threatened to flee if their tax burden rises, reviving the arts and restoring public safety.
Here and around the country, the pandemic has laid bare old inequities and exacerbated others. More than 30,000 New Yorkers, a heavily disproportionate number of them from working poor, minority communities, are dead. Many multiples more are grieving. Even as the candidates spell out their post-Covid plans, the virus continues to spread, with new cases hovering at a dangerously high plateau. The city has lost hundreds of thousands of jobs, countless small businesses, and even with the shot of financial adrenaline provided by the recent federal aid package passed by Democrats in Washington, the city’s robust public sector — bus drivers, sanitation workers, subway operators — could still, in the absence of astute leadership, face devastating cuts. Yang’s campaign likely hinges on undecided New York City Democrats, the largest bloc in every poll of the race to date, embracing a fundamental trade-off — by choosing an exuberant cheerleader over candidates with deeper understandings of the city’s infinitely complicated levers of power.
His rivals remain publicly confident that they won’t. There are debates to come and millions of dollars of television ads to roll out. At about the same stage in 2013, the last open mayoral primary, Anthony Weiner was the favorite and future Mayor Bill de Blasio looked like an afterthought.
Candidate Maya Wiley, a civil rights lawyer and former counsel to de Blasio, suggested in a recent interview with Bloomberg News that Yang’s advantage in name recognition would fade alongside his lead in the polls.
“My daughter had a Howard Dean Beanie Baby and that didn’t help him,” Wiley quipped. “T-shirts don’t win elections.”
‘A happy warrior’
The challenge for Wiley and others, in what could charitably be called an eight-deep field of candidates, is to figure out a path up or around him.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, a former police captain who advocated for reforms during his time on the force before serving as a state lawmaker, is widely regarded as best-positioned to overtake Yang, something even his top advisers acknowledged in a recent press briefing. Wiley and New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer, along with former nonprofit executive Dianne Morales, are the liberal favorites, though only Wiley and Stringer appear to be in touching distance. Kathryn Garcia, a former sanitation commissioner with a deep knowledge of city government, has lagged behind.
So too have Ray McGuire, the former Citigroup executive, and Shaun Donovan, who served as commissioner of the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development under Mayor Michael Bloomberg before going to work for the Obama administration. Both have independent expenditure groups ready to boost them as election day nears.
“Right now, there are so many candidates and so little attention being paid to the campaign because of other things that are going on — the pandemic, everything in Washington and (with the scandals surrounding Gov. Andrew Cuomo) — it’s impossible for any candidate to communicate positions on issues to a large number of voters,” said Kenneth Sherrill, a professor emeritus of political science at Hunter College.
The draw of Yang, he added, was easy to name.
“This guy’s a happy warrior,” Sherrill said. “People may well just be craving happiness. And I’m not talking about a comedian. I’m not talking about a clown. I’m not talking about a demagogue — just somebody who likes people and likes life.”
Yang has mostly worn his frontrunner status lightly, pivoting — like the more seasoned politician he is now — from questions about the prospect of taking on such a heavy responsibility. But the historic implications of his campaign, which could end with Yang becoming the city’s first Asian-American mayor, have been heightened by a citywide surge in anti-Asian violence.
“It’s something that’s affected everyone. But it certainly hits home for Asian Americans, who feel like our race is putting us in a position to worry more about being able to go on the subway or walk down certain streets at night,” Yang said. “So I feel these issues very personally, but I think a lot of Americans do. It’s just a really devastating time for the Asian American community.”
On the boardwalk at Coney Island on Friday afternoon, as some of those other candidates came and went to mark the landmark’s formal re-opening, Yang took questions from a smattering of reporters and few inquisitive cameramen.
He said he was “thrilled” by the freshly approved New York State budget, which includes new aid to schools, a tax hike on the wealthy and financial aid to undocumented workers who had been excluded from federal legislation. The legalization of marijuana, which passed separately but almost concurrent to the budget, also got his stamp of approval. On the issue of his Nathan’s hot dog order, he confessed to keeping it simple — ketchup and mustard, self-applied, declaring himself “a little sauerkraut dubious.”
He then paid tribute to the rapper and actor DMX, a beloved New York native, whose death had been announced earlier in the day. When the would-be gotcha question came — what was his favorite DMX song? — Yang named “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem” and talked affectionately of the “bad action movies” he starred in.
“Like, good bad action movies,” Yang clarified after being accused by a photographer of suggesting “Belly” was not, in fact, good. “Like action movies that were in the target and I was very much the target during that era.”
That brand of gleeful, accessible campaigning was the trademark of Yang’s unexpectedly strong presidential campaign, transforming him from a no-name gadfly to a regular on the debate stage. But the issues facing New Yorkers, in this race, are much different. Yang leads in the polls — and his every utterance is coming under harsh scrutiny from the other candidates, the press and skeptical voters.
Lis Smith, the veteran New York political operative who helped lead Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s presidential campaign, said the “biggest hurdle” Yang has to overcome is proving — again and again — that he could take a punch and stay on his feet.
“Could he withstand the scrutiny of being a frontrunner?,” Smith said. “The simple answer, so far, is yes.”
The backlash intensifies
Yang’s flirtations with a bid to become New York’s 110th mayor began almost immediately after he exited last year’s Democratic presidential primary. He seemed to be shying away from the prospect, though, when he signed on for a brief stint as a Appradab political commentator and founded a nonprofit.
By mid-December, though, the chatter picked up. Private conversations became public knowledge. Yang spoke to local leaders, like Rep. Grace Meng of Queens and the Rev. Al Sharpton, and eventually enlisted some of the city’s top political operatives to chart his path.
Then, on January 13, he made it official.
“Seeing my city the way it is now breaks my heart,” Yang said in a video directed by filmmaker Darren Aronofsky. In it, he introduced a signal endorsement, from newly elected Rep. Ritchie Torres, chatted with his wife, Evelyn, about his favorite sports teams (Mets over Yankees; the Knicks, in spite of himself) and school funding, ticked through his signature policy proposals and greeted passersby who, months later, still clamor for selfies and snips of conversation.
But Yang’s appeal on the street and its evidence in the polls also set off a backlash.
On Twitter, he is under constant scrutiny from critics who question his knowledge of the city and commitment to its civic life. He was mocked for taking pictures in a “bodega” that looked more like a supermarket. And piled-on again after posting a snap from a subway line that didn’t run to his stated destination. (His campaign subsequently told reporters that he transferred lines en route.)
More substantially, Yang struck a nerve early on when he revealed that, at the height of the pandemic last year, he and his family left the city for their second home — a couple hours away, upstate.
And his recent suggestion on Twitter that the city more strictly enforce rules against unlicensed street vending angered advocates who worry a new crackdown would target immigrant workers. Yang has also said he wanted to increase the number of licensed vendors, which could put him at odds with brick-and-mortar shops. (On Monday, he backed off “the sentiment as it was described on that thread” and said he didn’t view the issue as a “zero-sum game” between vendors and retailers.)
Under sometimes harsh examination from local media and activists, Yang’s big ideas — guaranteeing a basic income for the half-million New Yorkers in greatest need, establishing a public bank, appointing a police commissioner “whose career is not primarily in law enforcement” — can sound less inspired than half-baked. His plans to fuel an economic revival with public-private partnerships and skepticism over tax hikes on big businesses and the wealthy, coupled with distrust of his idiosyncratic ideological bearings, have made Yang an enemy of the city’s ascendant progressive and leftist political organizations.
The speed and sharpness of the attacks from his rivals has also accelerated as the election nears.
Stringer recently accused Yang of peddling “municipal Reaganomics.” Adams, in perhaps the most heated back-and-forth to date, slammed his business record and falsely claimed Yang had “never held a job in his entire life.” A spokeswoman for Wiley, responding to his call for de Blasio to slow the spending of federal stimulus funds, labeled Yang a “mini-Trump.”
Asked on Friday about that particular turn of phrase, Yang half-laughed.
“I genuinely don’t know how to respond to that,” he told Appradab. “I just find that very confusing. Genuinely.”
Yang’s campaign has also aggressively pushed back on the assertion that handing him the city’s top political job during a period of historic uncertainty could imperil its recovery.
“What is a risk,” top Yang strategist Chris Coffey said, “is doing the same thing over and over again and getting the same results.”
The wild cards
Whether Yang can maintain his lead — and bring in new voters — as the other candidates crack open their war chests could boil down to a few key strategic decisions by the remaining, undecided political movers in a city where the old machers, like the county parties, have mostly been relegated to the sidelines.
The big labor unions have largely split their support among Adams, Stringer, Wiley and Garcia. Progressive groups seem to be hesitating, though, stuck between Wiley, Stringer and their affection for Morales. A number of increasingly influential, young, liberal city-based state lawmakers backed Stringer early on, but it is unclear if their support will help fuel a consolidation on the left.
That uncertainty has been heightened by the introduction of ranked-choice voting, a system that typically rewards candidates who, even when they are not a voters’ top pick, can maintain some level of popularity — and acceptability — across various constituencies. But there is no indication, at this point, that the candidates trailing in the polls are prepared to alter course and consider strategic cross-endorsements.
If they do, the shift could happen in the coming weeks, after three of the handful of remaining outside influencers pick their horse. At the top of the list is The New York Times editorial board; the United Federation of Teachers, which has a losing record in recent elections but has seen its membership unified by the backlash over school re-openings; and the Working Families Party.
Emboldened by its staying power despite Cuomo’s best attempts to unravel it, the WFP is one of the few progressive organizations with the name brand and grassroots power to drive support to one (or more) of the leading liberal candidates.
“During a pandemic year, where candidates aren’t campaigning traditionally, we need to have a real path to victory,” WFP state director Sochie Nnaemeka told Appradab. “We cannot solely make our endorsement about value signaling. It has to be about who is the best vehicle for the progressive movement, for working people in the city to have representation at City Hall.”
Yang’s campaign, meanwhile, is projecting optimism while digging in for a dogfight.
“No one here is going to say there is no way for us to lose this race. There absolutely is,” Coffey, his strategist, said during a recent briefing. “But I’d rather be us than anyone else.”

Ebertfest 2019: A Photo Journal
Tumblr media
Roger's presence was alive and well in the Virginia Theatre at our 21st Ebertfest! Festival Director Nate Kohn and I presented the Roger Ebert's Film Festival in collaboration with Roger's alma mater, the College of Media at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. We were assisted by Festival Coordinator, Andrew Michael Hall ("Andy"). The following photo diary offers snapshots of our cherished memories that took place April 10th through April 13th in Champaign and Urbana, Illinois.
Photos courtesy of Timothy Hiatt.
DAY ONE
Tumblr media
The Opening Night Gala for Ebertfest was hosted graciously by University President Timothy Kileen and his wife Dr. Roberta Johnson. Opening speeches were also given by Chancellor Robert Jones and College of Media Dean Tracy Sulkin.
Tumblr media
During my speech at the gala, I was joined at the podium by two of the festival's special guests, Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly. Coincidentally, Gina Gerson's cousin, Alan Elliott, preserved, restored and presented our opening night selection, "Amazing Grace," the amazing documentary about Aretha Franklin recording the best selling gospel album in history over two nights in a church in Watts, Los Angeles in 1972.
Tumblr media
Preceding "Amazing Grace," Alan Elliott was joined onstage for a Q&A with producer Tirrell D. Whittley and our Ebert Fellow, Whitney Spencer. Elliott told us of his musical roots and of how he was influenced by gospel music and why he was so passionate about bringing this performance of Aretha Franklin to the public.
Tumblr media
Tirrell Whittley's background as a Deacon was evident in his powerful invocation. Once we saw this powerful film we understood Alan Elliott's quest to bring it to the screen. It is being distributed by NEON and has opened in select theaters across the country. No doubt church groups and many others will line up to see this historic performance.
Tumblr media
The crowd-pleasing screening concluded with a performance by the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir of Champaign-Urbana that had the audience on its feet.
Tumblr media
Turns out moving our musical finale of the festival to opening night was a great idea after all. It raised our spirits through the roof and held them there through the entirety of the week.
DAY TWO
Tumblr media
Prior to showtime at the Virginia Theatre, two inspiring academic panel discussions were held at the nearby Hyatt Hotel, the first sponsored by the Champaign County Alliance for Inclusion and Respect.
Tumblr media
It was entitled "Challenging Stigma Through the Arts," and moderated by Dr. Eric Pierson. The discussion challenged whether the images of addiction in the movies helped or hindered the public's understanding of addiction. Pierson was joined onstage by therapist Marcina Hale, film critic Matt Fagerholm, and professional representatives of the recovery community, including from the Rosencrance Rehabilitation Center. Their in-depth discussion offered suggestions on which movies and TV shows portrayed addiction accurately, but more importantly, they offered practical solutions to treating addiction and it's aftermath as a service to the audience.
Tumblr media
The second panel focused on "Women in Cinema: Hollywood or Independent, Does it Make a Difference," and featured such speakers as Alliance of Women Film Journalists president Jennifer Merin, "Bound" stars Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon... They too offered practical suggestions for how to increase the representation of women in cinema, both in front of and behind the camera.
Tumblr media
...RogerEbert.com Assistant Editor Nell Minow, "Maya Angelou and Still I Rise" director Rita Coburn and "The Curvy Critic" Carla Renata (filmmaker Stephen Apkon and Sony Pictures Classics co-president Michael Barker were also present).
Tumblr media
Alloy Orchestra members Ken Winokur and Terry Donahue chatted onstage with Michael Phillips and Todd Rendleman following their live musical accompaniment of a silent screen classic, in this case, Jean Epstein's 1923 melodrama, "Coeur fidèle" ("The Faithful Heart"). The third member of their trio, Roger Miller, was busy selling their priceless merchandise in the festival's boutique.
Tumblr media
The Alloy Orchestra has performed at Ebertfest for over 16 years and are always brought back by popular demand. They compose original scores for the silent films they select, even making some of the instruments they use. What a talented group. We are fortunate to have them.
Tumblr media
Both of the morning panels were reflected in the second film of the day, and Sony Pictures Classics Co-President, Michael Barker, delivered an amazing homage to the late Jonathan Demme's 2008 masterwork, "Rachel Getting Married." It featured Anne Hathaway in what I still consider her best performance, as a struggling addict returning home for her sister's wedding. This film is phenomenal with a cast including Rosemarie DeWitt, Bill Irwin, Debra Winger, Anna Deveare Smith, Tunde Adebimpe and many others. Demme considered it one of his favorites in contributing to the understanding of human behavior. It shows how whole families become dysfunctional and act out in various ways, but how facing up to addiction, admitting wrongs, making amends, forgiveness and love can help you face the very messiness of life and come together as a family and community. Michael Barker is without a doubt one of Ebertfest's favorite guests.
Tumblr media
Barker spoke onstage after the film with our critic, Nell Minow, and one of Demme's closest friends, Stephen Apkon, a recipient of the Roger Ebert Humanitarian Award for his documentary, "Disturbing the Peace." The screenwriter of "Rachel Getting Married," Jenny Lumet (the granddaughter of Lena Horne and the daughter of Sidney Lumet), joined in the conversation over the satellite.
Tumblr media
Lana and Lilly Wachowski's hugely enjoyable debut feature, "Bound," was the evening's cinematic treat, and it was made ten times more entertaining by the Q&A afterward with Gina Gershon and Academy Award nominee Jennifer Tilly. Their banter with critics Chuck Koplinski and Pamela Powell was a joy to watch.
DAY THREE
Tumblr media
Michael Phillips introduced the audience to the 2018-19 University of Illinois College of Media Roger Ebert Fellows, Curtis Cook, Pari Apostolakos and Eunice Alpasan, who did a splendid job covering their first full Ebertfest experience. Although Phillips is the film critic for the Chicago Tribune, he is the revered mentor for the Ebert Fellowship program at the University of Illinois, and is valued for his knowledge and experience and his love of teaching. He makes the program better every year.
Tumblr media
One of our longtime Ebertfest guests, Sam Fragoso, was encouraged by Roger to keep doing what he loved, and he is now an accomplished critic, podcaster and filmmaker. His wonderful short film, "Sebastian," preceded the first feature screened on Day 3 of Ebertfest, and earned him the coveted Golden Thumb.
Tumblr media
Pawel Pawlikowski's ravishing Polish romance, "Cold War," was the discussion topic for Festival Director Nate Kohn, Michael Phillips and Carla Renata, following the morning screening. Carla Renata interviewed the film's director and shared some revealing insights into the movie. It was partially based on Pawlikowski's parents' tempestuous love story and is an epic told over several decades. Renata is also a recurring actress on ABC's Superstore, and just published a book for actors on marketing.
Tumblr media
Horace Jenkins' newly restored 1982 gem, "Cane River," brought out a stellar quartet of talents: producer Sandra Schulberg, actress Tommye Myrick and Jenkins' children, Sacha and Dominique Jenkins. This film is a modern day Romeo & Juliet played out in Louisiana among descendants of African-American Creoles and slaves. It is a tale of colorism, land ownership, and a young woman's determination to pursue her education, but above all, it a tale of love. Very romantic. Ms. Myrick hilariously told us how she had to learn to swim and ride horses because she couldn't do either and the film required both. Schulberg told us how she preserved to get the film restored. And Dominique and Sacha told us of their remarkable father whose life itself is worthy of a film.
Tumblr media
The great Polish actress, Madame Maja Komorowska, traveled all the way from Warsaw to attend our Ebertfest screening of Krzysztof Zanussi's 1984 love story, "A Year of the Quiet Sun," which paired her with the late Scott Wilson, to whom this year's festival was dedicated. She was joined on stage by her amusing translator, Jerzy Tyszkiewicz, who also happens to be her grandson.
Tumblr media
Their Q&A was moderated by Professor Todd Rendleman and Jennifer Merin. After tribute clips of Scott Wilson's film career, his widow, Heavenly Wilson, spoke of getting this movie made in Poland and at Monument Valley in the United States.
Tumblr media
Here Maja Komorowska and Jerzy are joined by Scott's widow, Heavenly Wilson. Getting to spend time with them was heavenly indeed. It has become an Ebertfest tradition for guests and audiences to pose with the sculpture of Roger on the plaza of the Virginia Theater. The sculpture is by artist Rick Harney and was installed by the fundraising efforts of festival donors Donna and Scott Anderson. It was truly a gift from the heart, as Donna woke up in the hospital when she was having a heart transplant and said she wanted to do whatever it took to get a sculpture of Roger near the Virginia Theater as a gift to the community.
Tumblr media
Iconic "Simpsons" producer David Mirkin brought down the house with his beloved 1997 comedy, "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion." Festival Director Nate Kohn appears here with film critics and broadcasters Chuck Koplinski and Pamela Powell who had a ball chatting with David Mirkin onstage. The audience loved seeing Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino in their screwball roles. Mirkin presented an image of high school that so many can relate to. He was a delightful guest.
DAY FOUR
Tumblr media
Beginning the last day of Ebertfest 2019 were two films about heroic figures who have left an indelible imprint in our culture long after their passing. The first was "Maya Angelou and Still I Rise," directed by Rita Coburn, who spoke onstage with our Editor at Large Matt Zoller Seitz and Ebert Fellow Whitney Spencer afterward. Rita Coburn, in a surprise, was presented with the inaugural ICON award, for the scope of her film about the iconic Maya Angelou, and her contributions to humanity. This was the first ICON award ever given at Ebertfest. Rita Coburn is actually one of those phenomenal women that Angelou talks about. The film was awarded a Peabody among other awards.
Tumblr media
Director Morgan Neville won the Ebert Humanitarian award for his film, "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" about the television trailblazer and radical humanist Fred Rogers.  It was only the third humanitarian award given. The second was given to Norman Lear for his lifetime of work in television in highlighting the various nuances of the human condition through humor.  Neville was joined onstage by RogerEbert.com Assistant Editors Nick Allen and Matt Fagerholm, who were both great admirers of the movie. Matt movingly shared with the audience the letter he wrote to Mr Rogers when he was five years old, and also the amazingly long and very specific response Mr Rogers wrote back to five-year-old Matt in encouragement. It illustrated the respect Mr Rogers had for children and his principle of radical kindness.
Tumblr media
Our festival culminated with a celebration of Roger's longtime on-air "At the Movies" partner, Richard Roeper. A montage of hilarious and touching highlights from their reviews preceded my conversation with him onstage. Richard chose two films to present at Ebertfest, and both were well received: "Almost Famous," and "Sideways." Richard's career includes broadcasting on radio and television and other platforms, publishing books about movies and gambling, and lecturing. He may also be working on future movie projects.
Tumblr media
RogerEbert.com Managing Editor Brian Tallerico and Editor at Large Matt Zoller Seitz chatted with Richard Roeper and Sam Fragoso about one of their favorite movies, Cameron Crowe's "Almost Famous," a film very close to Roger's heart (and his own life story). Crowe provided a special video introduction to the picture that was appreciated by the whole audience. His film still plays well all these years later, with an luminous performance by Kate Hudson, and an unbelievably perfect cast, including Billy Crudup, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Jason Lee and the vulnerable newcomer Patrick Fugit.
Tumblr media
Last but certainly not least, we screened one of Roeper's most prized films he ever got to review with Roger, Alexander Payne's "Sideways." The film's Oscar-nominated star, the beautiful Virginia Madsen, joined us via Skype from the set of her new TV series, "Swamp Thing," for an emotional conversation about Roger and his championing of the film. The film starred Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden-Church and the unforgettable Sandra Oh. Virginia shared many insights, including about drinking fabricated fake wine. Hilarious.  Richard Roeper, Matt Zoller Seitz and Nell Minow were on hand for the discussion. All in all, a perfect end to another unforgettable Ebertfest. Join us April 15th through April 18th next year for the 22nd anniversary of Roger Ebert's Film Festival!

Saturday's Championship Tips: Robins, Tigers and Bees catch the eye
(New post on FreeBetAlerts.com) - https://freebetalerts.com/2019/01/11/saturdays-championship-tips-robins-tigers-and-bees-catch-the-eye/ #Football, #Freebets, #Tips
Saturday's Championship Tips: Robins, Tigers and Bees catch the eye Please share.
Bristol City are the team with .’s best bet money riding on their backs in the Championship this Saturday… “City, unbeaten at home in their last five outings, look set to add to that tally on Saturday. They are only five points off the playoff spots and Lee Johnson’s side is unbeaten in nine games in all competitions after taking the Premier League scalp of Huddersfield in the FA Cup.”
Bristol set to extend unbeaten runBristol City [1.61] v Bolton [6.2]; The Draw [3.9]A friend of mine is a Bolton supporter. I asked him on Thursday whether he thought his beloved Trotters stood a chance against Bristol City this weekend and I can’t print his response. Needless to say he wasn’t at all optimistic. He was more concerned about when his team would go into administration and whether they’d still be on the fixture list this time next year.Bolton have been struggling on and off the pitch. Their dire financial straits continue to distract from their equally abject travails against Championship relegation. Administration and subsequent points deductions would guarantee League One football next season, but while there is life their is hope, just.A morale boosting 5-2 win against Walsall in the FA Cup is unlikely to have too much influence in a team that was walloped 6-0 in their last league game at Hull. Then there was the transfer mayhem surrounding 26-year-old striker Christian Doidge who joined the club on loan from Forest Green in August, with the deal to be made permanent in January. But Bolton’s registration embargo has seen that deal collapse.Bolton sit 22nd in the Championship and have taken only six points from their last 13 league games. They’ve also lost their last four straight away and haven’t won on their travels since August. City, unbeaten at home in their last five outings, look set to add to that tally on Saturday. They are only five points off the playoff spots and Lee Johnson’s side is unbeaten in nine games in all competitions after taking the Premier League scalp of Huddersfield in the FA Cup. The last six City scorers have been different players so there is no obvious goalscorer bet in this game. But the Robins have seen under 2.5 goals scored in six of their last seven matches and Bolton have failed to score in more league games than any other Championship team this season (14), so Bristol City to win and under 2.5 is the play at [3.35].Hull the punters’ delight right nowHull [2.1] v Sheffield Wed [3.7]; The Draw [3.5]Hull City are on an incredible run after completely turning their season around. A win on Saturday would be the first time they have won six straight league games in the second tier or above since April 1910 under manager Ambrose Langley.Nigel Adkins’ performance in the east coast is right up there with any manager in the country. It must have been something he said toward the end of October as nine points from the first 14 league matches by 24 October has since changed to 27 from the next 12 games played, including five Championship wins on the bounce. The Tigers have also scored at least two goals in each of their last seven league games, but the last four matches played against Saturday’s opponents Sheffield Wednesday have yielded under 2.5. The Owl’s have also seen under 2.5 goals scored in their last four matches this season.Steve Agnew has been keeping the managerial hotseat at Hillsborough warm until the arrival of Steve Bruce. And the Owls are undefeated in five matches in all competitions. The Owls have a new manager at the helm for the fifth straight visit to the KCOM Stadium, after Brian Laws, Dave Jones, Carlos Carvalhal, Jos Luhukay and now Agnew, but it’s asking a lot for the new man to take much from the KCOM this weekend. With Hull rampant and unlikely to be tainted by a defeat to Millwall in the FA Cup last weekend it doesn’t bode well. Jarod Bowen has scored in each of the last two home games and landed my nap last weekend, so I was going to stick with the tried, trusted and profitable Bowen to score again in a Hull win, but it wasn’t available at the time of writing. Fraizer Campbell has scored two goals in three games against Sheffield Wednesday for Hull, including netting the opener in the reverse fixture earlier this season. He would be another strong scorer option. But Hull to win and over 2.5 takes my money at [3.43].Bees and Stoke hard to splitBrentford [2.46] v Stoke [3.25]; The Draw [3.4]Brentford boss Thomas Frank had a dreadful start after replacing Dean Smith as manager, but recent results have offered a glimmer of hope. Unbeaten in five games in all competitions, with three league draws in succession, the Bees are buzzing back. Frank needs that run to continue with his side only six points clear of safety and they face a Stoke side on Saturday who will be hoping for the new manager bump. Gary Rowett has gone and Nathan Jones takes charge of a team with aspirations far higher than their current 14th position. Former Luton Town man Jones inherits a side eight points short of the playoffs, the bare minumum for the pre-season title favourites. This game is tough to call, but don’t count on their being many goals. There have been under 2.5 goals scored in Brentford’s last five league games and Stoke have failed to find the net in their last three Championship matches and an under 2.5 match goal bet would have landed in their last four outings. The draw seems a likely result possibility at [3.4], but the wise money is on it being a low scoring affair too, so let’s play for a 0-0 or 1-1 with the draw and under 2.5 goals at [3.89].****You can follow James on Twitter – @football_badger

ABOUT HANS ZIMMER
German-born composer Hans Zimmer is recognized as one of Hollywood’s most innovative musical talents‚ having first enjoyed success in the world of pop music as a member of The Buggles. The group’s single Video Killed the Radio Star became a worldwide hit and helped usher in a new era of global entertainment as the first music video to be aired on MTV. Zimmer entered the world of film music in London during a long collaboration with famed composer and mentor Stanley Myers‚ which included the film MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE. He soon began work on several successful solo projects‚ including the critically acclaimed A World Apart‚ and during these years Zimmer pioneered the use of combining old and new musical technologies. Today‚ this work has earned him the reputation of being the father of integrating the electronic musical world with traditional orchestral arrangements. A turning point in Zimmer’s career came in 1988 when he was asked to score RAIN MAN for director Barry Levinson. The film went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture of the Year and earned Zimmer his first Academy Award Nomination for Best Original Score. The next year‚ Zimmer composed the score for another Best Picture Oscar recipient‚ DRIVING MISS DAISY‚ starring Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman. Having already scored two Best Picture winners‚ in the early ’90s Zimmer cemented his position as a pre-eminent talent with the award-winning score for THE LION KING. The soundtrack has sold over 15 million copies to date and earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Score‚ a Golden Globe‚ an American Music Award‚ a Tony and two Grammy Awards. In total‚ Zimmer’s work has been nominated for 7 Golden Globes‚ 7 Grammys and seven Oscars for RAINMAN‚ GLADIATOR‚ THE LION KING‚ AS GOOD AS IT GETS‚ THE PREACHERS WIFE‚ THE THIN RED LINE‚ THE PRINCE OF EGYPT and THE LAST SAMURAI. With his career in full swing‚ Zimmer was anxious to replicate the mentoring experience he had benefited from under Stanley Myers’ guidance. With state-of-the-art technology and a supportive creative environment‚ Zimmer was able to offer film-scoring opportunities to young composers at his Santa Monica-based musical ’think tank.’ This approach helped launch the careers of such notable composers as Mark Mancina‚ John Powell‚ Harry Gregson-Williams‚ Nick Glennie-Smith and Klaus Badelt. In 2000 Zimmer scored the music for GLADIATOR‚ for which he received an Oscar nomination‚ in addition to Golden Globe and Broadcast Film Critics Awards for his epic score. It sold more than three million copies worldwide and spawned a second album “Gladiator: More Music From The Motion Picture‚” released on the Universal Classics/Decca label. Zimmer’s other scores that year included MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2‚ THE ROAD TO EL DORADO and AN EVERLASTING PIECE‚ directed by Barry Levinson. Some of his other impressive scores include PEARL HARBOR‚ THE RING‚4 films directed by Ridley Scott; MATCHSTICK MEN‚ HANNIBAL‚ BLACK HAWK DOWN and THELMA & LOUISE‚ Penny Marshall’s RIDING IN CARS WITH BOYS AND A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN‚ Quentin Tarantino’s TRUE ROMANCE‚ TEARS OF THE SUN‚ Ron Howard’s BACKDRAFT‚ DAYS OF THUNDER‚ Smilla’s SENSE OF SNOW and the animated SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON for which he also co-wrote four of the songs with Bryan Adams‚ including the Golden Globe nominated “Here I Am.” At the 27th annual Flanders International Film Festival‚ Zimmer performed live for the first time in concert with a 100-piece orchestra and a 100-piece choir. Choosing selections from his impressive body of work‚ Zimmer performed newly orchestrated concert versions of GLADIATOR‚ MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2‚ RAIN MAN‚ THE LION KING‚ and THE THIN RED LINE. The concert was recorded by Decca and released as a concert album entitled "The Wings Of A Film: The Music Of Hans Zimmer." In 2003‚ Zimmer completed his 100th film score for the film THE LAST SAMURAI‚ starring Tom Cruise‚ for which he received both a Golden Globe and a Broadcast Film Critics nomination. Over the past year‚ Zimmer has scored Nancy Meyers’ comedy SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE‚ the animated Dreamworks film‚ A SHARK’S TALE (featuring voices of Will Smith‚ Renee Zellweger‚ Robert De Niro‚ Jack Black and Martin Scorsese)‚ and most recently‚ Jim Brooks’ SPANGLISH starring Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni (for which he also received a Golden Globe nomination). His projects also include Paramount’s WEATHERMAN starring Nicolas Cage‚ Dreamworks’ MADAGASCAR and Warner Bros.’ BATMAN BEGINS. Zimmer’s additional honors and awards include the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in Film Composition from the National Board of Review‚ and the Frederick Loewe Award in 2003 at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. He has also received ASCAP’s Henry Mancini Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Roy Dixon Smith “Uncle Dixie” as we called him, was born in Glady, Randolph County WV on 14 January 1911.  He was the son of John Calvin Smith Sr (1888-1934) and Flossie Olive Propst Smith (1892-1918).  He married Mabel Virginia Turner (1915-1976) on 13 Jan 1932 in Elkins WV, Randolph County.
I first remember going to visit Uncle Dixie at his home in Florida, took Mom and Dad there in about 1987 while we were visiting family in Titusville.  We sat down and spent some time with him before heading back across the B line. He was a very hospitable man, and spoke of his family, told us of the tragedy about his wife in the back yard, she had committed suicide and I believe that is why he never left this small comfortable house that he called home.  In my quest to find further about our 5th Great Grandfather Charles, I am now going to try to tidy up some of the stories and previous posts. My hope is to find connections with other family members that may have just that tidbit of information that we may need to complete our quest.  So I will touch a bit on the extended families of our relatives too.  So please feel free to add a comment to this  post and or any memories you have, and share with others so that they may see what we are doing and have just what we need.  I do have a problem with some information on Uncle Dixie.  Here is a link to my account on ancestry.com  http://person.ancestry.com/tree/88178723/person/36567008327/facts     Here I am trying to fix things up a bit and there is a link to a Find A Grave Memorial that I had included at one time thinking that it was Uncle Dixie and Aunt Mabel, but there is another person that has since linked that information  to a Mabel Virginia Boutwell Smith and Roy Dean Smith.  When I look at his profile and the tombstone, there is no where in there stating it is a Boutwell or middle name of Dean.  I had added our obituary information to that entry, and now it has been linked to this Boutwell.  Her information is almost exactly the same as ours.  So it may be her, but until I can get clarification, I have asked Find A Grave to take my information off of there.  I am hoping to send Jeannie a message and see where Uncle Dixie is buried.  It would be such a coincidence for that gentleman to have the same named people and the same birth and death dates as ours, he does have them linked at this time and if I can find out, I will attempt to get it corrected, but then I see his Mabel divorced his Roy Dean in 1979, so this can’t be the correct one if our Mabel died in 1976 and that is what is on the stone.
Uncle Dixie was born in the small town of Glady, Randolph County, on 14 January 1911 according to his social security death record.  I can find no listing of his birth on the WV Vital Records webpage, maybe will need to take a trip to the local courthouse here, see  if there is anything there.  He was the  eldest of the Smith children having sister’s Evelyn Melvina born in 1912 and   Mabel Blanche in 1914, then along came a brother Woodrow Calvin in  1916, and yet another brother Basil William in 1918 (our grandfather).  But soon the family will have tragedy strike, their beloved mother Flossie Olive becomes ill after the birth of her 5th child in May and she dies suddenly in October of 1918.  His mother’s niece was taking care of her while she was ill, I have no record yet when she came into the home, but I have heard this from several family members, Virginia White and Rusty Smith to name a couple, and that she was Flossie’s niece.  So with records I have been able to piece what we have heard with what we can see on paper and documents.  John and Myrtle did marry in December of 1918.
By 1920 the family is still living in the Dry Fork area, with John and Myrtle, on the Beverly Circleville Rd, according to the 1920 Census records, but this will be the last time that we will see the family all together.  Since my first posts I have found out what had happened to all the brothers and sisters, John and Flossie’s children. (I may leave that information out for the moment), most know the stories anyways, they have been passed down to us, and being able to confirm them with actual county records is far more than I had ever guessed I would have been able to accomplish.  We heard that Basil was raised by Myrtle, and Uncle Dixie was still living at home when we next see John and Myrtle living at 117 Wilson St in Elkins.  Great Grandpa John and Uncle Dixie were working on the railroad.  I had wondered about that too, I knew the address to be close to the old roundhouse in Elkins, then I saw that they were listed as working on the railroad on the 1930 Census, another confirmation of some stories we had been told.  Steve Bodkins listed a Cal Smith as an engineer on a locomotive in his book Bemis and Glady WV, if you have not read that one, I suggest you do.  It gives such great insight into what life was like in that area back in those days, you would never have imagined how big it was.
On June 13, 1932 in Elkins, Randolph County WV, Uncle Dixie marries Mabel Virginia Turner (1915-1976), their marriage record shows that he was from Randolph County and 21 years old and that she was from Pocahontas County and 18 years old.  She was the daughter of Warren T Turner (1877-) and Bessie L Teter Turner (1893-) of Pocahontas County, WV.  I do know that was living in the Mabie area for a time, my Dad talked about this, he worked in the coal mines, with the rest of the family, I know Grandpa Basil worked their too. In 1933 he and Mabel had a child, Charles, who died at birth.  Then in 1934 he took his Dad over to see his sister Evelyn in Franklin, her daughter Virginia recalls that night vividly we speak often of this incident.  She remembers that he spent a few days with them, and then headed out for Elkins that most tragic evening.  Now she only remembers Uncle Dixie and John Calvin being there, though some of the family thought our Grandpa Basil was there, she was only about 10 at the time.  He was about 24 years old and driving the car when there was a roll over type of accident.  I have been working on trying to get a copy of the accident report, but have not been able to do that yet.  Virginia recalls wondering about him coming all the way into Elkins and not to the hospital in Rockingham, but I think what happened was that your car rolled over and was righted, your Dad had a severe gash on his throat, but he instructed you to come on into Elkins, where he died from the injuries sustained in the accident.  We may never know the exact details, but we have thought of you often.  I am sure you carried guilt from that accident, even though it was an accident.  I know there were some other circumstances, but I will save that.
Then in 1953 he moved to Florida and began working for the Purex Company, as a machine mechanic and retired from there in 1974, as per information found on his obituary. Mabel had applied for a disability on her social security benefits in 1973 but it was denied.  I wonder what was happening at this time because in just a few short years she would take her life.  I know that he had visitors from time to time, because we came down a couple of times to visit and Aunt Jane lived nearby, I remember visiting her too.  I see from the City Directory in Florida you were living in Lutz in 1992, at the age of 81, and then your death at the age of 96 in 2007.  Uncle Dixie truly had a very hard life, as well as I know his brother’s and sister’s did.  I hope that he has come to peace with all that tragedy and is finally smiling from heaven, as we try to keep his memory preserved, I hope that I can do the family justice…out of tragedy….
Roy Dixon Smith 1911-2007 Glady, Randolph County WV, “So We Are the Smith’s”. Roy Dixon Smith "Uncle Dixie" as we called him, was born in Glady, Randolph County WV on 14 January 1911.
