#I don’t have an adoption problem I say as I adopt another child
Note
In lostys universe, Gare and El are long distance during some of their college years.
Do they ever have any big fights or miscommunication during that period?? Any conversations about what their future together will look like as the years peel away to adulthood? Just curious 🥰♥️
Still loving that greatmage lore 💜🩷
Ohh girl this made me think A LOT. because my first instinct was to be like “noooo my pookies never fight!” but that’s completely unrealistic. So I dug deep and came up with a few ideas… and of course it got really long so I’m putting it under a readmore…
- I think their biggest fights would be about money, but not in the typical way a young couple fights about money! In both Next Time I Fall and Lost and Found I alluded to El and Kali getting large settlements of “hush money” from Hawkins Lab, and at the end of Next Time El even suggests to Gareth that they use some of that money to get married. But it’s the late 80s and I’m sure Hopper had repeatedly impressed upon Gareth the importance of The Man Being The Breadwinner and the need to Properly Take Care Of His Daughter, so Gareth wouldn’t feel right about letting El pay for anything.
Finally El sits both Hopper and Gareth down one day and tells them look, Chrissy helped me find this super cute house and I can easily afford it so I’m gonna buy it. Gareth, you’re welcome to live there with me if you can get over your pride about it. And Dad, you need to mind your own beeswax. (Will taught her that phrase, and he almost chokes trying to hold back his laughter when he hears her repeat it.)
- Another thing I can imagine is the long-distance thing just wearing on both of them (they’re cuddly koalas and they can’t stand being apart for too long) but I could see that manifesting in different ways. For El, I think insecurity would be something she’d struggle with; especially if school interfered with time they wanted to spend together, she would feel neglected and get a little pouty about Gare thinking his work was more important than her. And I can imagine if he got impatient or exasperated about that, her mind would immediately leap to “you don’t love me anymore?” She needs a lot of reassurance after everything she’s been through.
But this, I think, would probably lead to Gareth never wanting to speak up about his own needs or problems, because he does truly want to be that steadfast source of reassurance for her, but also sometimes he feels a little resentful, as if she doesn’t trust him enough to keep loving her even when he’s irritated. And then that makes him wonder if she feels that way because of everything with Mike, and he gets pouty thinking she’s comparing him to Mike. Oh, kiddos.
- I imagined all of this coming to a head one weekend when Gareth wasn’t planning to come home because he was exhausted and had a ton of work to do, but El getting upset with him and kinda giving him a guilt trip about it until finally he gives in and says okay fine I’m coming. But he’s so tired that he ends up falling asleep behind the wheel and getting into a minor accident, which naturally freaks El out, and I think that would lead to a very deep heart-to-heart talk where they both end up resolving to communicate more honestly about their needs, and trust that their relationship can withstand temporary separation when needed.
- On a much happier note, conversations about the future!
I know a lot of people headcanon El as wanting tons of kids, but for some reason I imagine that pregnancy would be total body-horror for her. (Maybe I’m drawing that from my personal life? Lmao) I do believe she’d want a family of her own though, and I think she and Gare would have a lot of conversations about fostering and/or adoption to help troubled kids. And there’s a lovely fic that was gifted to me about the two of them preparing to welcome their first foster child.
I think they’d want pets, too— I imagine them going to an animal shelter just to look around, and El overhearing an employee saying “nobody will ever adopt this one, these dogs are monsters.” She instantly demands to see the monster dog, and of course it’s not a monster at all, it’s the cutest tiny little pit bull puppy, and El and Gare instantly fall in love with her and name her Bosco since she’s chocolate brown. 😊
I think El would have a lot of trouble deciding what she wanted to do after high school, as far as more schooling or a career or what, and they’d have a lot of discussions about that.
And of course they’d talk about traveling— there’s so many places they both want to see, and experiences they want to have for the first time together. Also I think it would be super cute if they went to Wales with Granny and Granddad Emerson to visit relatives and friends there. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
This got way longer than I thought it would lmao but thank you so much for asking! I always love sharing my ideas and headcanons with you! 💕

Adoption -Rafe Cameron
Warning: Ovulation disorder (Not being able to get pregnant), Fluff, English isn’t my first language
Summary: Since you weren’t able to get pregnant, Rafe came up with an idea and now you couldn’t be happier
Pairing: Rafe Cameron x Wife!Reader
Tumblr media
You had always loved children. Ever since you started babysitting at the age of 14, you looked forward to the day were you give birth to your own children.
You wanted to provide your child with all the love and opportunities you could. You had a loving husband, a beautiful home, and a good job, so it seemed like the perfect time to have children. However, things didn't go as planned.
One year ago, you and Rafe began trying for a baby. After some time of unsuccessful attempts, you decided to visit your gynecologist for an evaluation. Although you knew that getting pregnant may take some time, you had a sense that something might be wrong.
“I am sorry Mrs. Cameron,” The doctor said, looking at the test results, “But it seems like you have an ovulation disorder.”
“W-what does that mean?” You gulped, already feeling the tears in your eyes.
“I am sorry, but you will not be able to get pregnant anytime soon.” He explained, his face filled with sorrow.
You felt your world crumble around you. Your greatest desire was to become a mother, but it seemed as though fate had other plans.
“Will I ever be able to?” You asked him, tears now streaming down your face.
“There are different treatment options, but the chances are not high for you.” He told you honestly.
The last year you tried everything your doctor had recommend. Medications, lifestyle changes and a hormone replacement therapy. Still, you weren’t pregnant and the feeling of emptiness ate you alive.
Rafe supported you through everything, but it made you feel even more upset that you couldn't give him a child he wanted just as much as you did.
"How did your treatment go today?" your husband asked as he kissed your forehead.
“Unsuccessful. Rafe, I can’t do this anymore,” You mumbled and he nodded in an understanding way.
“It’s alright, my love. I know the past year has been difficult for you, and I noticed how much you suffered.” He kissed you tenderly.
"I really wanted to have a baby and make you a dad, Rafe. I'm sorry I couldn't." You whispered, staring at the white wall in front of you.
“No, no, don’t do this. It’s not your fault. And maybe I have a solution to our problem,” he said with a smile.
You frowned at him, “You find yourself another wife?”
He shook his head “Course not, you are the only woman I could ever love.”
You smiled a little and kissed him.
"I was thinking about adoption. We could provide a loving home for a child who needs it," he suggested, waiting for your response.
Adoption? You never thought about it before. The child may not be biologically yours, but you could still be its mother and Rafe could be its father. You could provide all the love and care that a baby needs. You would support the child in every decision, attend all their school events, and throw the most amazing birthday parties anyone has ever seen.
A big smile appeared on your face and Rafe immediately knew that adoption would be the solution to all your problems.
————
"Come on, Lily. Let's get you changed," you say with a smile, looking at the two-year-old girl in front of you.
She clapped her hands as giggles filled the room.
You and Rafe adopted Lily almost a year ago. Somehow she resembled both Rafe and you, having blue eyes like him and your hair color. Nevertheless, even if she didn't resemble either of you, it wouldn't change how much you loved her.
Lily was an angle, quite a shy child but after she saw people a few times she warmed up to them.
Today the three of you decided to go to the beach. You held two bathing suits in front of her, “What do you say, sweetie, pink or blue?”
“Bwu,” She smiled, her growing teeth showing.
She was adorable and you couldn’t be happier to be her mother.
You helped her into her bathing suit before picking her up and walking downstairs, where Rafe was already waiting.
“Dada!” She shouted, making grabby hands towards him.
“Well, look at you. Such a cute bathing suit.” He smiled, taking her out of your arms.
You couldn't believe how happy you finally were. Maybe you didn't carry Lily for nine months, but you and Rafe were certainly made to be her parents.

Hiii! i love your writing 😘 if your ok with writing this could i request some fluffy dad!felix catton if you have any in store?! again, totally understand if your uncomfortable writing this or just don’t want to 😊😊
It’s taken me a while to get to this because I’ve been struggling to find my way in when it comes to Felix as a Dad. I’m not sure if I do have a Dad!Felix fluff in me but I do have some thoughts/head canons on Felix as a Dad as a whole I’m slowly developing. So here are those…
Tumblr media
Felix is all in in the newborn stage. It’s a novelty for him. The easy stage before they find their voices and start screaming the place down. When all you have to do is hold them, feed them, change them. He’s so there for that.
He’s happy to get up in the middle of the night, looking out the windows at the grounds with a baby in his arms, telling stories and recounting memories of his youth and that time running around the grounds with Farleigh and Venetia.
He loves see you with HIS child. He’s very protective. While you lie in his bed with tea and toast, feeding your child he shoos everyone else from the room, not wanting to share that sight or special time with anyone else in the family. Venetia is the only one who occasionally slips through the cracks. (She is a great aunt to your child by the way)
When the baby starts to grow older though he begins to struggle. You are a very hands on parent in comparison to him and he’s happy for you to be. After all his mother was very hands on with him and Venetia, however as a child he never saw his Dad there as much as his Mum and so has adopted a similar way of thinking that of his father and grandfather that fussing kids is a Mother problem.
Don’t get me wrong, he still loves showing up to be the fun dad. Running across the lawns with them. Enabling their hobbies and paying for anything they want. But when it comes to the hard stuff you feel completely abandoned.
As time goes on you realise you aren’t on the same wave length about parenting at all. And a lot of that has to do with Felix’s upbringing and family.
Elspeth is always there to step in and make a fuss, forcing herself on her grandchildren like she makes everything better, but often (especially if a child is already in a tantrum state it can sometimes make it worse until she just hands the child back and leaves you with a screaming child.
When Felix’s mates come knocking, asking him to go on golfing or skiing holidays with them it’s always “you’ve got this, haven’t you babe? Great. I love you. See you in a week.”
And because that’s how Felix was raised, what he observed from his family over the years, he honestly knows no better.
“If you’re struggling we can just get a Nanny.” He says when you confront him. It always has you seeing red. “I don’t want a Nanny Felix. I want US to raise our kids.”
You realise the only way things will change is if you all get out of that house and away from his family. So you give him the ultimatum: “it’s either us or your family.”
Of course it’s that honour in him, that unspoken traditional allegiance to your wife and kids that has him reluctantly agreeing, hoping in a few months you’ll see sense and see how difficult it is without all the servants and his daddy’s money. But you thrive, despite the way Felix shuffles his feet and does the bare minimum in protest.
After another argument where you tell him to show up or fuck off back to his family he finally takes you seriously and the more time he spends with you and your family and more modest hands on parenting and living styles he begins to thrive, seeing that the grass can be greener on the other side.
The more time away from his family he sees how toxic his families dynamic is. When you visit he sticks up for his kids and is protective of them when his parents begin to push their values and views on his kids.
You stand by him as he begins to put in boundaries and really analyse his life, his youth, his privilege and how it has in fact hindered him in life in so many basic ways. You support him and feel pride when he helps enforce those boundaries around his parents, his family as he ultimately gives them the same ultimatum you gave him all those years ago.
Although his father is reluctant, Elspeth is desperate to know her grandchildren and apologised to you both and promises to respect your parenting choices and swears to try and uphold those values in front of your children as much as she can.
With the new boundaries in place, summers in Saltburn become regular things for your kids. All of you playing together on the grounds. Chasing each other through the maze. Swimming in the pool and the lake. You and Felix set up scavenger hunts for your kids. And they ultimately grow up with the best of both worlds.
So yeah. Those are my more realistic Dad Felix thoughts. Tell me what you think….

How Many kids I think the Bachelor/ettes would (want to) have
A/N: because I like thinking about things~ also because I started thinking about it because I want a lot of kids and I wondered who I would actually work well with. Late Merry Christmas btw!!! And happy holidays!!
Tw:sex, maybe cursing idk I always put cursing, childbirth/children, mentions of issues with childbirth, mentions of postpartum depression, mentions of adoptions and other stuff surrounding it.
Wc: at least 5 bullet points for each
Sdv Masterlist
Sebastian
I think he would want either one kid only or as many as his partner wants
Because I can see him being a good dad to his kids
But like I also think that people like him only have one kid because they didn’t get along with their own siblings
So the trauma is like I don’t want to have to choose between my kids when they don’t get along and I don’t want any problems so having one is good
But I also thinks he would want to see how close siblings could be to live somewhat through them
So it’s literally a toss up
On the topic of adoption though he’d probably adopt an older kid if you’re okay with it
Like a teen that doesn’t have a family and is about to age out
I think he’s that type of person and you could adopt a baby or a younger kid later on.
I also think Robin would be present but not like constantly there. Like it’s grandmas for Christmas and other holidays and sometimes she visits but that’s it.
I do think that he would probably end up with a lot of kids bc he can’t keep it in his pants now that he has a significant other.
Sam
He’s going to have at least 3
I see him having 2 boys and a girl if I’m being honest and it would be really cute
All of them are learning to skateboard and something about music
I think he would be a very chaotic dad
Like you have a heart attack every couple of minutes being married to him
Like “yeah! Junior lost a tooth” “how’d he lose a tooth?” “He absolutely ate shit at the skatepark”
I think he would be happy to adopt but probably wouldn’t because of Jodi
I do headcanon Jodi as bit of judgemental
Like she won’t say anything outright but she will be passive aggressive like “I love allllll of my grandkids! Even (adopted child’s name)”
So if you guys do end up adopting for one reason or another you’ll only see Jodi for big holidays unless Sam can get her to change
Vincent is a sweet uncle though and Kent is a decent grandfather. Refuses to tell stories of the war to them though. Jodi is an overbearing but GREAT grandmother when she’s not being petty
Shane
Well he already has Jas so he either will have one more so she has a sibling/cousin
or he will have like 4 more to make the total 5
I do think he would like a big family
But all of the kids are a couple years apart at least because he does want to make sure they all are happy
It takes a while for you two to have kids or adopt because he does still have depression and thinks he would be a shitty father
But he’d be the best out of the bachelors I think maybe number two
Because I feel like out of all of them his love would be greater simply because he does have that self hate and he wants to make sure he’s doing as well as he can
Jas is VERY happy to be a big sister
Harvey
Harvey is a 2 kid guy
Like he would be a 1 kid guy but he’s afraid that the child would be lonely
I also think he would be an only child so he doesn’t want his kid to have the same childhood as him
But the kids would definitely have an age gap
Like at least 8 years because he wants to make sure you(if you’re a person who can give birth) are okay after giving birth.
I also think that if he adopts he would go for siblings specifically
Like two kids that don’t want to be separated by the system or two kids who are biologically related he would go for them
Simply because he wants two kids anyways and keeping people together is what would make him happy
Alex
Either 1 or 4 there’s no in between
I feel like you would have either all boys or all girls with him
Like his genes are very predictable not gonna lie
No matter what gender I think he would make all of them play gridball
Would be hella sad if none of the kids liked the sport bc COME ON
I do think that in his heart he would like to adopt
Especially if it’s to save a kid that’s in a bad family situation
Because in a way his grandparents adopted him after his father left and his mother died
Like those are his parents for lack of actual mom and dad
Very sweet dad but does have sexist tendencies
Like if you have daughters he would be much more strict with them but also would spoil them rotten
And while he’s not as strict with the boys he’s also not as sweet on them.
You have to get him to open up and realize that raising the kids in a specific way can breed resentment towards him. He gets smarter the more kids you have.
Elliott
I think Elliott would want one or two
I don’t know why but I see him as a guy that doesn’t have a lot of kids
Mostly because I feel like he would still like to have time with his partner and having a lot of kids would take away from that unless you can get a sitter or something
But I also feel like he wouldn’t want daycare or a babysitter or nanny
He wants to raise the kids together especially because you both work from home
Also having more than I think 3 for him would make it so he has no time to work on writing
And having only a couple would mean he can evenly give enough attention to the kids.
While for some people having a lot of kids is not a problem with attention and love I think Elliot knows that he’s the type of person that cannot be spread too thin.
Which isn’t a bad thing.
If you’re same sex he is not opposed to adoption
Would like to adopt twins though
Would prefer boy girl twins but obviously won’t throw a fit if it doesn’t work out that way
You’re adopting kids not a dog.
Penny
Easily at least 6
I don’t think she would have the most easy pregnancies
But she will make it look as if she’s the perfect housewife and that bearing children is a breeze for her
She loves kids and wants a big happy family especially because of her upbringing
So if you marry her expect her to want to have kids that are all at least a year apart in age
Doesn’t mind getting pregnant again as soon as you’re cleared for sex
I do think she would prefer to bear children instead of adopt but she’s not opposed to it
I could also see her becoming a foster mother at some point and taking in a bunch of children because she has an empty nest
If you’re the same sex she would probably want ivf
Like obviously this isn’t meant to be offensive and some people have different takes
But she also won’t like be upset that you have to adopt and she would make sure to adopt a BUNCH of children
Is a good mother and tries hard to spread her attention evenly.
You having a farm is great for this type of situation not gonna lie
Leah
To be VERY honest I see Leah as the kind of woman to be a single mom
Not because she gets divorced or her partner dies
It’s literally by choice only her and her kid in their cabin painting.
BUT OBVIOUSLY in this scenario she’s married to you
She would still only have 1 or 2 kids
I don’t think she would really enjoy being pregnant
Like she would like doing the pregnancy art things
But the state of being that she’s in is HORRIBLE she HATES IT
But she loves her kid so much that she’s like okay I can do it one more time.
Maru
Maru is either a one person kid or a 5 person kid tbh
And I do think that science people be lowkey freaky
So I do think she would have a lot of kids
Like somehow she’s always pregnant and everyone is like ?????? Another kid?????
And shes like YEAH I KNOW ISNT THE HUMAN BODY AMAZING????
Y’all’s kids are super smart ngl
Like you’re like???????wtf
Like even if you end up adopting they’re super smart and you’re like ????????? WTF HOW
Though they are still very interested in farming.
Somehow combines the two and creates a super farm
Like you make so much more money after having kids it’s insane.
Haley
Two or three kid woman
No matter how strong your genes are your kids will always have either blonde hair or blue eyes if not both.
Out of all the people having kids your kids with her would have the most normal names
She was a mean girl in high school she’s not setting up her kids for failure from the beginning
Unlike the others who would be on board with homeschooling if that’s what you wanted Haley wants the kids in public or private school.
Shes not much of a teacher and you’re always working on the farm so she wants them to have a good chance of being smart.
I think that y’all would have tons of baby books for the kids because she takes at least 10 pictures a day
Like there is no running out of embarrassing baby pictures your kids better behave lmao
Actually a good mom and ends up being one of those “I’m a cool mom right” women
But she’s actually kinda cool when she’s not making dated references.
Emily
One kid that is just as weird as she is
It doesn’t matter if the kid is adopted or not they behave just like her
But also I think she would go for adopting or fostering the more troubled children because they need love too
And I think she’s the perfect person to understand people on a different level than others.
A very sweet mother that is different than the other bachelor/ettes
Your kid turns out very happy, kind, and connected to the world
They might be a little weird like her
But are well liked by the people who find themselves misunderstood.
She would also be the type of person to run a foster home.
Abigail
I think Abby would like 2 kids.
I think she was very lonely as a kid
Especially with her father only focusing on his work and her mother hanging out with her but not really understanding her likes and hobbies
If she had a sibling there could be a chance that they won’t get along but she feels in her heart that they would’ve been close
So she would have two kids that are like maybe 2 years apart or 5 years apart
I don’t think she would enjoy being pregnant but she enjoys it more than she thought she would
Is not willing to go through giving birth again
So if you’re a person who could give birth if you want more than 2 kids then you’re giving birth
If you’re a person that can get others pregnant then you better plan for a surrogate or adoption because like I said she’s not going through that labor shit again
She is open to having more than 2 kids but like there’s other things that you have to do if you want them
Is a decent mom is kinda awkward with mothering but tries her best

✩ WEEKLY FIC ROUND-UP ✩
All the fics I’ve read and really enjoyed in the past week-ish. Reminder: This list features any and all ratings and themes. Please look at tags and warnings on ao3 before reading.
Harry Potter
The Ordeal of Being Known by louisfake
When Auror Potter is anonymously cursed with silence by being forced to hide his own voice inside his mind, there's unfortunately only one person in the country with the qualifications to fix it: Certified and Licensed Healer Legilimens, Draco Malfoy, specialist in Mind Curses and Afflictions. It's obviously a terrible idea, a disaster waiting to happen, but Draco's never been able to back down from a challenge... especially from Potter.
Features fuzzy cartoon slippers, devious house elves, 90s music, and lots—LOTS—of memories. Ron is annoyingly hot, Hermione sees right through you, Harry is a powerful idiot, and Draco is a reclusive masochist that would buy an entire city if it would make a kid happy. (And Pansy is "5'2, I wanna dance with you, and I'm sophisticated fun.")
Super Mario Bros
Cooking Mama (Luigi)! by Little_RedHots_Riding_Hood
Luigi was having a perfectly peaceful stroll through the Toad Market - the sun was shining, he'd just found a lovely handmade blanket, and was on his way to the bakery before heading back to his and Mario's home.
Only... what was that sniffling noise from that dark, scary alleyway?
Of all the creatures he was expecting to find, the littlest prince of the Koopa Kingdom certainly wasn't it.
Star Wars
the tiger is out by elumish
Wolffe looks like he’s regretting having a second Jedi with them.
DC
Cryp-Tim by PrinceJakeFireCake
"The cons of dating Tim Drake were innumerous. For one, he was almost impossible to photograph, and so none of Kon’s friends at school actually believed he existed. His family was scary, horrifying really, and all of them seemed to find joy in making Tim regret ever being born. And Tim had charmed Ma and Pa Kent so thoroughly, they had ditched their shovel talk to instead coo at him and offer him pie and compliment him for fixing their tractor, so Kon was at a disadvantage when it came to intimidating someone with his family.”
Kon and Tim date. It goes pretty well, all things considered.
Tim Has a Hero Worship-y Crush on Every Robin Ever by PrinceJakeFireCake
"Tim as an adult was bad enough, Tim with no filter as a child was too much to be around."
Cork Board Contingencies by PrinceJakeFireCake
If you don’t use a cork board to obsessively plan contingencies for every possible way a date with your best friend can go, how can you go on a date at all?
Excerpt: “Are you free next Saturday?” Tim asked, pretty sure that Kon’s jumble of words was agreement that he wanted to date Tim.
“Maybe!” Kon exclaimed.
“Cool,” Tim commented, taking another sip of his drugged grape soda (“Dammit, Tim,” he mentally told himself. “Do not give in! Buy new grape soda! Stop drinking the drugged grape soda! I’ve shotgunned another can of drugged grape soda, haven’t I? Dammit, that makes five!”) then saying, “That gives me just enough time to pass out for fifty-two hours and plan our first date."
Immunology by JustGettingBy
Hypothetically speaking. Could a hybrid creature become suddenly not viable? Like say it survives being an embryo, makes it through growing up, and then just one day… stops? the text from Kon reads.
Tim’s heart spikes up through his ribs. Kon. What’s happening?
(OR Kon gets the flu. It becomes Tim's problem.)
Change of Plans by PrinceJakeFireCake
"Who’s your friend, Tim?” the voice asked.
Jason hissed. This was his baby! Not his friend!
“Sorry, sorry,” the voice hastened to apologize. “I mean, who’s your parent, Tim?”
AKA, who has the time to be a murderous crime/drug lord when there are kittens to adopt
Motion Blur by sElkieNight60
At Damian's school art showcase, Bruce realizes he needs to help Tim reframe their relationship.

I have personal beef with Lobdell's "hence the name, Red Hood" panel when Jason picks up that poor, abused dog in RH:O. Which logically I know is an off the cuff joke but 1. Lobdell likes to simplify Jason and his motives all the time (which he could’ve been doing here) 2. I’ve seen a lot of people say they don’t get why/the connection/deeper meaning/etc. Jason picked his name or 3. people who want Jason to drop RH & pick up a new vigilante identity without (or before) Jason getting his full circle closure
Tumblr media
(First: can Jason please have a companion again. And can they be given a real name this time? Not Lobdell’s lazy out? Give that man another dog or fuxk, let him pick up a cat that was abandoned in the rain. Please???)
anyway, main attraction:
Within that spread, Scott Lobdell wrote that Jason picked the name because he's awful at naming things and went with the most basic, obvious choice, Red Hood. This is an incredible disservice to why Jason chose to take his mantle specifically.
Imagine you're Batman, a fledgling vigilante who abides by a strict no-kill moral code. It's your first or so year manning the streets of a massive, corrupt city--Gotham--and you still aren't fully sure of what you're doing. The criminal underworld still isn't even convinced you're real. One of the first big cases you bust, a man who calls himself the Red Hood, dies. you play accomplice to the man falling into a vat of chemicals even as you try to save him. He dies. You killed a man due to your own mistakes.
But you didn't. Not really.
The man comes back under a new name--the Joker--and becomes one of your most prominent enemies. The guilt eats you alive. You dub him your greatest failure. The guilt complex and strengthened moral platitudes refuse to let him die, let alone kill the man. Only "saving him" will relieve you of the grief. Your guilt, your grief, God, your god complex, something is too big for you to admit you can't save everyone including the problems you inadvertently create.
You take in a boy, a ward--Dick Grayson--because the city won’t let a single bachelor like Brucie Wayne adopt him. You’re his brother, you’re his spandex-wearing partner, you’re not his father (he has a father, he doesn’t want you to be his father) but you’re also not not his father; it’s complicated. You didn't want him to turn into you and he creates his own mantle--Robin--to honor his parents.
You and him are partners for many years--Batman and Robin: The Dynamic Duo. Until, one day, The Joker shoots him in the shoulder and he falls off a building on live TV. The city’s populace is upheaved, believing Robin is dead. Demanding Batman be held responsible for his negligence, for even having a underaged partner in the first place. You agree. The field is no place for a child, you decide to keep him so. Robin, the child, is dead, killed by the Joker. Dick Grayson, now a man, is alive and blazing his own trail--Nightwing.
So one child-to-man moves on. And one stays behind. Weeks, months, pass and, you refuse to admit it, you're lonely.
You find another boy--Jason Todd (found in the same location and on the anniversary your parents were murdered in the part of town you only visit once a year)--stealing your tires. Not Bruce Wayne's tires. Batman's tires. He makes you laugh, audaciously so. He takes you down with a tire jack and, God, he’s fast and feisty. (He thought you were going to kill him. You don’t loiter on the thought: it makes your stomach turn). You track him down to retrieve your tires. He tells you he doesn't want to be a criminal, he takes what he needs to survive. He's starving.
You try to stay out of it (all you do is check what happened to his missing dad--murdered--and sick mom--heroin was what got her in the end). You push him towards education. He doesn't trust the cops. He doesn't trust the system. He doesn't trust adults. He hardly trusts you. He tells you about a case, that the school is bad, but believes you only half listen--brush him off like every other person in his life. You follow up. He follows up.
You ask him to be Robin. He accepts.
Later, you adopt him.
Dick's mad at you for giving away his title without asking, to a child nonetheless. (“You said the field was no place for a child!”) You snap at him, say you missed him. (You keep telling Gordan that Jason's no child. That he's seen too much, is more experienced than either of them combined. You don't say this to Dick).
He leaves but he gives Jason his number and his blessing. The kid's torn up about it, you can tell (see the doubt eat him alive of if he should be wearing those colors. Your butler? Your father?--Alfred--tells you to stop comparing the boys--good or not).
That doubt sticks with him. That past experience sticks with him. He urges you to help the poorer parts of the city, especially the places where Batman only visits once a year (The first time he goes back after getting Jason isn’t as bad as all the times before). He fights for his people. He’s tied to Gotham in ways you aren’t. Sees things you don’t. Knows things you don’t. People who can’t stand you, love him.
You keep hearing him crying over his dead mother and watch him lose it against rapists. He advocated for the woman that killed the man who murdered 12 women including her sister even though Batman and Robin aren’t supposed to endorse extra judicial work like that. He breaks a man’s collarbone for taking pictures of naked children. He thinks the “Dress-ups” won’t ever stop because Batman’s only weapon is fear and they aren’t afraid. He once said life’s a game. Monopoly, Bruce assumes he means.
Drugs are easier than rape to catch a man on, and the boy is furious that the perpetrator is only being sent back to his home country. ("he'll just hurt the women over there! He won't stop!" He's in hysterics).
A young woman is dead. The boy found her body. A man falls to his death a man is pushed to his death is dead. The boy was the last one to be with him. You bench him, but you forget that you asked him to be Robin first and a son second.
He runs away. A birth mom--Shelia Haywood, you eventually learn. He's missing. It has to wait. The Joker's out again. You have to prevent your greatest failure from becoming bigger. (He shot Barbara earlier this year)
You leave the boy with his birth mom by the warehouse. You have to go after the Joker. The Joker has killed and killed and killed. Will continue to kill. The boy is dead. He killed the boy. The mother says he was good. He's nothing more than broken bones and mangled limbs. She's...not.
Your greatest failure murdered your boy. His body’s already getting cold when you find hi—the body. The corpse. You hold it. Because it’s an it now, not a him.
You go after the Joker. The pilot is shot. You don't try to kill the Joker, but you don't bring him with you as you jump. The helicopter crashes. You don't even think he's dead; unresolved as per usual.
You failed to protect him. You failed. And he’s dead.
Superman pulls you from the ocean.
You go home and Alfred meets you once you get off the plane. He tells you it's not your fault, the boy had it coming. The murdered boy--a Good Solider, buried next to his bio-mother in Gotham Cemetery--is dubbed your new biggest failure.
Dick's in space and would miss the funeral, so you decide instead to not tell him there was a funeral at all. At least someone will still think Jason’s alive. At least someone will keep Jason alive through their belief. It’s not like Dick’ll find out. They weren’t that close anyway (Dick & Jason or you & him?)
When Dick does eventually find out, because of course he obviously does, he's furious. It's the first time you punch your first Robin. (You don't know it yet, but it won't be the last time, not for Dick and not for some other so-called family members.)
Robin is dead. Far deader than Dick Grayson ever was. He did it to himself. He thought it was a game. Dick doesn’t get it. He was better. He was alive.
(You can’t admit he’s become your son out loud. Hardly even in your head. It’s fine. Dick is the same about your fatherhood. Like father, like son)
You blame it on Jason's death. It changed you. He changed you. It's his fault. Everyone follows suit.
You leave the Joker in a body cast for six months. He gets out again. Luckily you have a new Robin--Tim Drake. He's not Jason. You can see it in his eyes that he knows that's a good thing. Gotham doesn’t even know the second one is dead. They believe Tim’s second one. Gordan even asked if he’s finally hit his growth spurt. 4’6 the death certificate said. That’s okay. No one needs to knows.
(Park Row Crime Alley knows. They know who’s theirs and who isn’t. Batman and Robin aren’t welcomed down there anymore)
(The first anniversary you visit your parents yours and his first meeting spot after Jason’s death feels like Ethiopia all over again)
A blonde girl is Robin now--Stephanie Brown. You tell her she's like Jason. She can tell you mean it as a bad thing but never processes it through her mind. You're trying to lure Tim back. A city-wide gang war wrecks Gotham. She's dead. Tortured by Black Mask and died on the operation table.
There's talk around the underworld, unified under Black Mask, a new gang leader's been making waves for months. You just heard about him tonight (a duffle bag full of heads told you): The Red Hood. You know that name. It’s a punch to the gut. Your first failure.
(“You’re getting slow, old man!)
He did what you've been trying to do for years in a matter of weeks: He overtook the entire Gotham underworld. He’s running circles around everyone. He pits you against the underground, keeps you busy, and he gets what he needs to be done Scot-Free. You hardly ever see him around. Only when he wants you to see him, do you. You don’t like things you aren’t in control of.
He doesn't want anyone dealing to kids. He likes bombs, but they're contained. Implosions, not explosions. He kills and is on par with Batman himself (he cut himself free of your line). Red Hood hangs around Crime Alley ("Park Row!" Jason would always respond), but no one there will rat him out to The Batman. They won't talk to you. Some of them even seem to...like having the Red Hood around.
He’s managed to bring down the crime rate of the entire city. Somehow.
It's raining. You can't tell. Jason's alive.
Jason's. Alive.
Jason'salivejason'salivejason'salivejason'salivejason'saliveason'salivejason'sal--
Jason's alive.
And he's killing people. And he's spitting in the face of your "sanctimonious" moral code. He laughed at you when he murdered someone in front of you. ("Just be happy I only killed the Nazi!") You tell him he doesn't get it. He responds the same.
(“You can't stop crime," he says along the lines of "Not with fear. But me...I'm controlling it.")
Jason's never had enough fear.
And now he's crying with a gun to his murderer's head. He says he’s not talking about the other rogues, just him. Just the Joker. He throws you a gun. You won't do it--can't do it. You need to save the Joker. To prove that you can. You need to save Jason. To show him this isn't the way. You can't have any more failures.
(“He took me from you!”)
Jason's going to do it himself, he says. "If you want to stop me, you're going to have to shoot me. Right in the face."
You can't let anyone die. You can't let the Joker die. It's your mission. There's so much blood. The batarang had to have had to knick the carotid artery in his neck. No one could survive it. The Joker is cackling with glee. You hear it in the walls of your skull. The bomb goes off. You don’t hear that at all.
Oh God. You killed your so—
You’re still gone, you think
You see Jason on patrol sometimes. High collar and still branding himself as Red Hood. There’s a red bat on his chest now. You don’t think it’s a compliment. The East End loves him. Jason still can't let the Joker go. Can’t—won’t move on.
Not till he's dead he says.
Take a moment to imagine yourself as a fledgling vigilante--Batman.
— — —
Anyway my meta turned into a 2nd POV fic????? but like that's not the point. The point is: That’s the impact of why Jason chose the name he did. It’s important to me that you all recognize these full-circle story beats. Do you see my vision?
Jason planned everything when he made his big debut. You don't think that dramatic-ass bastard thought about the name? Jason is mocking Bruce: both his fears and failures as a vigilante.
But that throwaway line is one of those really minor details that really bug me because it's so easy to throw out a panel and say “Jason's bad at naming things Haha" It's much harder to commit to "show, not tell" where writers have to trust their readers to get between the lines and figure out long-term connections.
As well as it's just another way Lobdell undermines Jason's goals in UtRH by saying "He couldn't think of anything else" compared to Winick's Jason who is laughing and mocking Bruce by taking up the mantle of Red Hood. Showing he's not afraid of what happened to him. Spitting in the face of the world that burned him and yelling “I’m still here!” Owning it. He's not afraid of Bruce. And he's definitely not afraid of the Joker.
I want Jason to get a new identity one day too but to do so before Jason ever gets his joker closure cuts his story short. (Which is a creative way of saying it’s never gonna happen unfortunately). I think if he gets one before he finishes the story and closes the cycle, it would be the final nail in the “Jason’s a batfamily member” coffin as it would probably be written as “Jason seeing the error of his ways” rather than for himself moving on to heal for himself.

My Full Metal Jacket
This one is much heavier on the angst and gore, but there is fluff sprinkled in, too. Graphic depictions of violence and death. Sexual themes. All my works are 18+ only.
If you want more of this world, let me know. Otherwise, I’ll have another one coming down the line in the not-so-distant future, I’m sure. Thanks for showing my writing some love. I appreciate it more than you know.
Tumblr media
“You again?”
“Get over yourself, Popeye,” you say, tossing your backpack onto the truck. “You should be kissing my beautiful feet after I hauled over all the heavy guns.”
“Nuh uh,” Abby says, flexing her arms obnoxiously. “Not all of them.”
Manny plugs his ears like an unruly child, filling the air with a loud, rhythmic noise to drown you both out.
“Isaac must hate my guts,” he groans. “Sticking me with you two.”
“Three whole weeks, baby,” Abby says, giving him a friendly slap on the shoulder as he passes by. “You know you love it.”
“Yeah, yeah. What’s not to love?” he says.
With a warm smile, he offers his four-legged battle buddy a few affectionate scrubs behind the ears, his voice projecting so that everyone can overhear their private conversation.
“We’ll leave all that sexual tension in the back of the truck where it belongs, won’t we, boy? Those crazy women.”
He motions for the dog to seek refuge inside the cab, granting him the privilege of riding shotgun.
“Manny, come on, it’s raining!” you complain.
He glares up at you as you hang lazily over the side of the truck. You jut your lower lip out at him, clarifying that you always fully intended to sit in the back, but you cannot pass up the chance to properly antagonize him first.
“Yeah, Manny. It’s raining,” Abby whines, joining you in solidarity by throwing her arm over your shoulder and adopting the most outrageously exaggerated pouty bottom lip he has ever seen. “It’s so wet out there!”
“Out there is not the problem,” he laughs. His hand darts through the air to flick at her lip, but she effortlessly dances out of his reach. “Animals, both of you.”
You gasp, slapping your chest in shock and scandal.
“I’ll have you know—I’m perfectly civilized,” you say, loading your firearm and cocking it with dramatic force.
Abby’s face lights up, admiring the only other woman in the FOB who possesses the same level of toughness and brutality as her.
“Goddamn,” Abby says. “My ride or die, right here.”
“All day, all night,” you giggle.
“Treacherous twins,” Manny says, rolling his eyes at you before ducking into the driver’s seat. “Keep fooling yourselves, guys. When the levy finally breaks, I will be there with a camera.”
----------------------------------------
This isn’t your first rodeo together and if all goes well, it won’t be your last.
The assignment is a recovery mission, focused on retrieving a unit of six soldiers who vanished while operating in enemy territory.
It comes as no surprise that Isaac chose the three of you to lead the mission.
Manny, being a gifted sharpshooter with breakneck combat instincts, makes your squad his most unyielding mercenaries for the job. He is also keenly aware of the unbreakable bond between you, which raises the probability of everyone returning home with the missing unit in tow.
“Don’t hog all the fruit,” Manny says, wiggling his fingers at Abby and motioning for her to pass him the container.
Between you, a campfire hisses against the rain, casting much needed warmth onto your tired bones.
“These are some mighty fine grapes,” Abby warns, lifting the container up and away. “You might have to fight me for them.”
“Ooh, can I have some?” you ask.
Without hesitation, Abby shuffles closer to you, carefully balancing the container on your knee as she continues to eat from it.
Manny shakes his head in mock disgust, ripping into a strip of jerky and offering a piece to the dog.
You bite into a succulent grape with a loud crunch and let out an ungodly moan.
“These are good.”
The corners of Abby’s eyes crinkle as she smiles at you, and it’s hard to remember a time when she wasn’t by your side.
Letting out a full-bodied yawn, you reluctantly give the container of fruit to the resentful man, who is now preoccupied with cleaning his gun and pretending neither of you exists.
Manny scoffs, then extends his peace offering of a dry blanket and some jerky.
“You need rest, sleepyhead,” he says, rising to examine the perimeter alongside his loyal companion. “We’ll take first watch.”
“Nah, I’m good—I’ll crash when we get back.”
Abby nudges you with her elbow before letting her hand linger where the container used to be. Her thumb unconsciously glides back and forth over your knee as she squeezes it.
“He’s right,” she says. “You can’t keep going like this.”
Sleep doesn’t come easily anymore, and nobody understands that better than Abby.
It’s not the nightmares that bother you nearly as much as the relentless struggle your brain endures to transition from drowsiness to deep sleep. It’s impossible to tally the countless nights you’ve spent yearning for slumber, as the hours slip away behind your restless eyelids.
Manny plants a knowing kiss on the top of your head before he sets off for patrol. The years of trauma have deeply affected all of you, leaving an indelible mark.
Abby, with her long legs stretched out, leans back on her arms, and soaks in the fire’s heat as embers pop below the flames.
“Are they back again—the bad dreams?” she asks.
“Not really,” you shrug.
With a sleepy blink, Abby turns her head to look at you. A slow, contented smile curls on her lips as she watches you pluck blades of grass from the ground, tearing them into smaller fragments. Your eyes fixate on the slender blade of grass, now cinched above your knuckle. It splotches your fingertip, turning it cold.
As Abby prods your thigh, coaxing you to keep talking, you give her a sheepish nod.
“I just can’t get there sometimes, you know?” you continue, blowing out a frustrated breath. “I’d take the nightmares at this point.”
Abby drags her backpack closer and lays her jacket overtop, covering the carabiners and jagged hooks. Expectantly, she pats the pillow she has made for you.
“Get over here, you broken girl,” she teases. “I won’t take no for an answer.”
“There’s no point,” you chuckle, giving her boot a gentle kick. “Why don’t you try?”
With a defiant grin, she sticks her tongue out at you.
 “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.”
----------------------------------------
The coordinates provided by Isaac point to a prison camp of some sort. Reaching the crest of the hill after a challenging hike, you’re hit with a wave of exhaustion and regret.
A larger extraction team would have been a wise choice.
The encampment is teeming with soldiers donning bulletproof vests and helmets. Scattered across the grounds, putrid skeletons squirm and writhe, their movements restricted by chains tethered to their rotten flesh.
It turns your stomach sour to see some soldiers finding pleasure in agitating them.
“What the hell is wrong with these assholes?” Abby asks.
“Sick fucks,” you mutter.
Abby carefully weaves her way through the dense trees, determined to get a better view through the fence. When she glances back at you, it’s apparent that something is not right.
Manny nods at a building in the distance. On the crumbling brick wall, there is a spray-painted image of a snake coiling around a skull.
“I’ve heard of this group,” Manny says. “They’re moving north. This is not good—we’re going to need backup.”
“We don’t have time,” you say.
As Abby skillfully navigates the encampment’s perimeter, the two of you shadow her every move.
Booming music fills the camp, a risky sign of disregard that surprisingly hasn’t attracted more infected. By using it to mask your infiltration, you might gain an advantage and, better yet, retrieve your team undetected.
“Let’s scope the joint, locate our people, and split,” Abby says. “We’ve only got one shot at this.”
Manny is meticulous about finding his vantage point, choosing the most effective spot to serve as a sniper. His job is to safeguard both of you as you traverse the site, and he doesn’t take his responsibility lightly.
As soon as you receive the green light, you instinctively reach for your gun, feeling the satisfying click as you disengage the safety. With a quick glance at Abby, you extend your hand, and she laces her rugged fingers through yours.
“May your survival be long,” you say.
With a gentle tug, she brings your hand to her chest, where you can feel the steady rhythm of her heartbeat.
“May our death be swift."
----------------------------------------
Resembling twisted Christmas ornaments, an array of belongings they’ve snatched from their victims hang abandoned and forgotten from lifeless trees. Your chest constricts as you identify a patch you recognize.
Sensing your distress, Abby moves closer, pressing against your lower back to provide guidance and remind you to maintain your focus.
Their ethics are even more deplorable than those of the WLF, and you genuinely didn’t think that was possible.
The number of your combatants in need of rescue had dwindled to only two, and the haunting image of what remains of the others will etch itself in your memory forever.
With badly malnourished soldiers in tow, you push yourself to move as quickly as possible, helping them navigate the terrain back to the Humvee.
The weight of your collective losses in this unforgiving world has left you feeling numb. As you think of the families waiting back home for loved ones who will never return, and all the prisoners you weren’t able to bring with you, the magnitude of going back for their belongings is paralyzing.
Returning empty-handed to those partners and friends seems wrong, and it won’t suffice; you need more than tales of sorrow to help honour their memories.
Without a second thought, your feet propel you forward, leaving your mind scrambling to catch up. While Abby and Manny are busy tending to the injured soldiers, you slip away unnoticed.
The notion doesn’t seem all that dangerous until you turn the first corner and come face to face with a stranger in a tactical vest.
Without surveillance or a potent ally to subdue and immobilize them before they can raise an alarm, you’re entirely on your own.
You make the first move, and with a swift strike, send them tumbling to the ground. The sudden commotion seizes the attention of everyone nearby, and when the music unexpectedly cuts, the bloodcurdling screams of the infected echo through the air. A chilling reminder of the grave error in judgment you’ve made.
Attempting to retrace your steps and return to your team, panic sets in as you notice that the enemies have strategically positioned themselves to surround the area from all sides.
A white-hot burn explodes through your back, and at first, you think someone must’ve bashed you with a lead pipe. Pressing your hand against the fire in your stomach, you can feel the wetness of blood as it stains your fingers, leaving no room for doubt that a bullet has found its mark.
Adrenaline drives you to take shelter behind a cement barricade as the periphery of your vision becomes hazy.
Chaos breaks out from a distance, and you pray your squad has the good sense to leave you behind. Suddenly, the deafening, sharp cracks of rapid gunfire surround you, and the only thing you recognize before the world goes dark is Abby’s piercing scream calling out your name.
----------------------------------------
When you blink awake, it’s to the rhythmic patter of rain against a tin roof. Through the window, angry storm clouds dominate the sky, casting a gloomy shadow over the room.
Pain radiates from somewhere in your abdomen, maybe everywhere. As you try to make sense of your surroundings, fatigue lurks, threatening to pull you back under. You muster a feeble effort to lift the blanket off your body, straining to pinpoint the source of your discomfort.
Abruptly, Abby’s presence is at your bedside, her warm hand caressing your jaw.
“Hey—leave it. Don’t try to sit up.”
She drapes the blanket over you, carefully tucking it under your back. Her face twists with worry when you let out a pained whimper.
The windowpane rattles from a clap of thunder, jolting you. A searing pang shoots through your spine.
“Abby,” you rasp, your throat like splintered kindling. “Am I bit?”
Your shallow breathing becomes rapid as the memory fights to resurface.
Her eyes brim with tears, and she pulls your knuckles to her lips.
“You caught a bullet, you tough fucking girl.”
Hanging on a chain around her neck, she absentmindedly fidgets with the relic before showing it to you.
“Such a badass,” she whispers, chin trembling. “I pulled it out of the wall.”
Thirst tortures you as words struggle to push beyond your sore lips. Abby disappears for a breath and returns with a cup of water. She carefully positions the straw at the corner of your mouth, instructing you to take small sips.
“You went back?” you choke.
The sharp pain that hits you when your core muscles contract to accommodate your coughing fit is unbearable. Tears stream down your face and Abby wipes them all away, her own tears threatening to fall.
“Was anyone else hurt?” you ask.
The weight of guilt crushes you as you witness the anguish on her face.
“Manny,” you shudder.
Shaking her head, a faint smile tugs at the corner of her lips.
“Nobody can touch that fucker.”
“Then who?” you ask.
With a powerful pull, she yanks a chair to the side of your bed, causing the legs to scrape against the floor. Dark purple bags cast heavy shadows under her tired eyes, the sensitive skin surrounding them appearing raw and irritated. She rubs at the area with her fist, trying to alleviate exhaustion or ward it away. It’s become a familiar sight over the years.
“Abby. Who?”
As she speaks, her voice grows huskier, carrying a hint of menace that borders on a snarl.
“All of them,” she says. “That camp is history and we’re just getting started. I’ll never let them hurt you again.”
The longing to curl up in her lap and hold her tight is almost enough to unearth the strength to do it.
Isaac would be the one to make the order if Abby didn’t do it herself, regardless of the mission’s outcome. He has zero tolerance for any threats to his land and his people, to an obvious fault.
But returning proved to be a mistake, and now Abby is enduring the consequences. It burns you worse than the gunshot wound.
“I shouldn’t have gone back. I’m sorry.”
Abby rests her head on your hip, and against a tangle of tubes and wires, you wriggle your fingers into her messy braid. Tired blue eyes flutter as they look up at you, her hand sliding softly across your chest to rest above your heart.
“I love you,” Abby murmurs. “Do you know that?”
“How much?” you ask, brushing her hair back from her forehead and letting the pad of your thumb drag over her furrowed brow. “As much as I love you?”
“More,” she says.
Her eyes gradually blink against burgeoning lethargy. When they shut, you trace her eyelids as her hand grips the fabric over your heart, planting herself there.
She makes one last confession before exhaustion takes her.
“I need you. Please don’t leave me now.”

Tick. Tock.
Tick. Tock.
Tick. Tock.
“What is taking her so long?” you sigh impatiently.
“She’s only been gone five minutes. Calm down,” Steve chuckles from beside you. Steve looks over at you to see you bouncing your leg from how nervous you are. You’re wringing your fingers together to keep yourself from biting your nails. “Y/N, you’re acting like a criminal who just got caught. Take a deep breath.”
“Steve, this woman is the decider on whether or not we have a child. Forgive me if I’m a little anxious.”
Your social worker, Amy, takes another ten minutes before she’s back in the office, and you let out a relieved sigh that she hasn’t kicked you out… yet.
“I am so sorry. We’re extremely backed up,” she says and takes a seat across from you.
“It’s no problem,” Steve smiles politely.
“So, you’re looking to adopt a child? It’s a big responsibility.”
“Yes, ma’am. We’ve actually been wanting this for a while now.”
“Why now? Why not then?”
You and Steve look at each other in thought. Maybe it’s because you two were out fighting in wars you had no business being in. Maybe it’s because you finally came face to face with Zemo again after so many years of being away from him, and you almost killed him. Maybe it’s because even though you think you’re ready to be parents… you’re actually not.
“We felt like the timing wasn’t right,” Steve finally answers and peels his eyes away from you.
“Have you always wanted to have children?”
“Yes, I have,” Steve answers honestly. “For as long as I could remember.”
“And you?” Amy asks.
“In the beginning, yes. I mean, when I was a lot younger. Some shit happened to me and I didn’t allow myself to feel that way until recently. Maybe in the last couple of years? I can’t have children biologically, but I do want one.”
“I never know how to ask this question despite how many years I’ve been doing this, but what kind of parents would you two be?”
“I can’t say for sure. How can anyone know for sure? We’ve never taken care of a child before. There will be obstacles that we might not know how to get over but I can tell you one thing. We will do our very best to make sure this child is loved, safe, and raised to be the best person they can be.”
“That’s a good answer,” Amy smiles and writes in her notebook. Steve rubs his thumb on the back of your hand comfortingly. “This is going to be a long process but I have confidence that it will go by quicker than you think.” She hands over a piece of paper to Steve. “Here is a list of everything I will be needing by the end of this week. Legal papers. You know how it goes. Next will be an extensive background screening for everyone living in the adoptive household. After that will be the in-home interview and inspection of the home.”
You don’t hear anything past background screening. What if they find out about Vixen? They won’t want to give you a child when they figure out how many people you’ve killed. What if they come for the home inspection and find your room of weapons? You’re not getting a kid.
“Okay,” you squeak out.
Steve notices your panic but decides not to say anything about it until you two leave the office building.
“What’s going on?”
“What if they find out about Vixen? The Winter Soldier? My time in Hydra?”
“They won’t--”
“What if they do?” you cut him off. “What if they don’t see me fit to be a mother? What about the guns and shit we have at the house? They’re not going to allow us to be parents with all that there.”
“Baby, you need to calm down. We’re going to do fine.”
His words go in through one ear and out the other. You hear him talk but you’re not listening to a word he’s saying. When you get home, you immediately head to the room with all your weapons and begin taking them off the wall. If you’re going to make this house suitable for a child, you have to make sure it’s safe for one.
“Y/N, it’s going to be fine.”
“No, it’s not. We live in a state where it’s illegal to carry outside your home. We aren’t even allowed to have this many weapons in the house.”
Steve knows you have to do this in order to make yourself feel better. He leaves you to box the weapons while he gets his phone out of his pocket. He calls Bucky, Sam, and Nat to come over because he thinks having them here is going to help you. He has always been the more level-headed one in the relationship which is why he’s being so calm about this. He has faith that everything is going to work out just fine.
“How long has she been like this?” Nat asks when she gets there.
“Since we left the social worker.” They know you and Steve have wanted a child for a while now. “Nothing I say matters.”
“Hey, Y/N,” Natasha says and walks into the room. “You doing okay?”
“No, I’m not. I have to get these weapons out of here. Can you keep them for a while?”
“Sure. You’re going to do just fine. If anyone deserves a kid, it’s you two.”
“No, it’s not okay. Amy is going to come in here and see all these weapons and she is not going to give us a child. This isn’t safe for one. Or she will know I’m Vixen and think wow, a mass murderer assassin doesn’t deserve a kid. Or she’ll know about Bucky, Thanos, and everything else we have done in our lives.”
“Would it help if we helped you?”
“Yeah,” you smile.
Bucky, Sam, Nat, and Steve help clear out the room until it’s bare. This is the room you’re going to use for the nursery. You don’t have any supplies since you’re not sure when you’re going to be getting a kid, so you’ll keep it bare for now. Bucky and Nat take the weapons to hold onto until this whole thing blows over. Your house has a basement that you can put them into only until after the inspections are done.
On the day of the interview and home inspection, you have cookies baking in the oven to give the home a sweet smell. You have been cleaning all day to ease your worries. Steve is nervous as hell but less than you are.
“I think this is the tenth time you fluffed that pillow.”
“It has to be perfect.”
“It is. You are. It’s going to be fine.”
“I know. It’s going to be great,” you smile. Amy shows up on the dot, and you let her in eagerly. “Welcome to our home. It’s good to see you again.”
“Thank you. Wow, smells good in here.”
“I have cookies that just left the oven. Would you like one?”
“No, thank you. I have two more visits to do. Not to sound rude but I’d like to get started right away.”
“Of course.”
You two lead her to the living room and sit across from her. Steve reaches for your hand and pulls it into his lap.
“To start with, why don’t you two tell me what you two do for a living?”
“We are employed with Stark Industries,” Steve says. Happy sends money to every Avenger on behalf of Tony. You don’t need a job when your job is saving people who need it. Does she not know you two are Avengers? “We make about two hundred thousand each every year.”
“Do you enjoy your work?”
“We love it. I can’t see myself doing anything else.”
“What are some of your hobbies?” Amy asks you.
“I love to sew. I love making my own clothes. I actually made my own wedding dress. It brings me peace whenever it’s just me, a needle, and some fabric.”
“And you?” Amy asks Steve while writing in her notebook.
“I like to draw, sometimes. I’ve been practicing more these days. I like to fish. We have a cabin up north that we like to go to when the weather is nice.”
“Tell me about your marriage, and how your relationship is with your significant other.”
You look at Steve and smile lovingly at him.
“There is nothing I wouldn’t do for this man. He has saved me in ways you can’t possibly imagine. He’s my best friend. Sure, we have our ups and downs, but there is nothing we can’t accomplish together.”
“She said it right,” Steve chuckles. “I love her with all of my being. Our marriage has been nothing but great for these past few years. I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
“That’s sweet,” Amy smiles and writes. “Tell me about your relationship with your parents.”
“Both our parents are dead. We don’t have any living relatives,” you answer.
“To get with the technical questions, why do you want to adopt?”
“I’ve mentioned this before but I’m sterile. I can’t have children on my own. I know Steve wants a family. This is the only way I know how to give it to him. We don’t want to do fostering or a surrogate. We feel like it’s more our style to adopt.”
“What she said,” Steve chuckles.
“If granted the opportunity to adopt, what are your hopes for your child?”
“That they’re a good person,” Steve answers. “That they’ll see someone who needs help and will want to do that for them. Who will love unconditionally.”
“Alright,” Amy writes. “This is everybody’s least favorite section. I’ve done your background checks.” Your heart drops. This is it. This is where she tells you that you can’t adopt. “Now my main concern is your work with Hydra. You are the Vixen.”
“Were,” you correct. “I’m not that person anymore. Yes, I have done a lot of bad things in my life. Things you can’t possibly imagine. That isn’t who I am now. I have healed from that part of me. I got help. I made amends. I got Hydra out of my head. I don’t associate myself with those people anymore.”
“What about Bucky?”
“Bucky is healed, as well,” Steve takes over. “He went to Wakanda and underwent the same thing she did. They’re both trying to move on from their past.”
“That’s all it is, Amy. It’s my past. It’s not my present and it sure as hell isn’t going to be my future.”
Amy goes through more routine questions before she gets ready for the house inspection. You tell her the plans you have for the empty room which will be the nursery. She doesn't say much but she does write a lot of stuff down.
“Thank you for coming,” you say when she is done.
“I’ll be touch.”
As soon as the front door is closed, your smile is lost.
“God, we’re not going to get a kid. Did you see the look on her face when she mentioned Vixen? She knows I’ve killed before. What person would want me to be a mother?”
Steve pulls you close and lets you vent. “We won’t know more for a while. Let’s just try and keep a calm head. Even if she says no, we can try other avenues. We will be parents. You’d be a loving mother.”
And wait you did. For two long weeks. You thought that was their way of telling you that you weren't going to have a kid. Until your phone rang and changed your entire life.
“Hello?” you answer frantically.
“Hi, Y/N? I have some news regarding your adoption application.” You and Steve wait with held breaths. “I am very happy to say you’ve been approved. I can’t wait to work with you.”
“We can get a kid?” you ask tearfully.
“That’s the first part of the process. We have sent in your application to mothers who are looking to put their children up for adoption. If and when they pick you, I will call with the next steps.”
“Thank you so much.” You cry when she hangs up. “We’re getting a kid.”
Steve pulls you in and kisses the top of your head emotionally. You have to wait for a birth mother to pick you so until then, you just have to wait. Most couples wait months or even years to get called, but you get a call from Amy only a couple of days later with a date set to meet a birth mother who chose your application among a few others. You’re nervous as hell because what if she doesn’t pick you? What if she hates you as soon as she meets you?
You get to the office where the meetings are held and wait for Amy and the birth mother to come. Her name is Jessica and she is too young to be having a kid. She is only twenty-three and she doesn't want kids at this age. Maybe when she is older but definitely not now.
Jessica walks in and seems to be about six months pregnant. She just came back from meeting a potential couple, so you straighten up and smooth down your skirt to make yourself look more presentable.
“Hi, it’s nice to meet you two. My name is Jessica.”
“Y/N and this is my husband, Steve. Thank you for seeing us.”
“Yeah, I was intrigued when I read about your hobbies and your work with Stark Industries. Did you know Tony?”
“Uh, yeah.” You look at Steve and have a silent conversation through your eyes. If she is going to pick you, she should know exactly who you are. “I hope this doesn’t affect us negatively but he’s Captain America and I’m… Vixen.”
It takes Jessica all of five seconds before she starts crying. This is it. This is where she runs for the hills and gets you blacklisted from ever adopting a child.
“Captain America saved my life,” she sniffles. “I was visiting a friend in Sokovia when Ultron happened. You saved me.” She turns to Amy and wipes her eyes. “I don’t want to see anyone else.” She looks at you with a teary smile. “I can’t think of anyone better to care for my child than you two.”
“I’ll get the paperwork started,” Amy smiles and leaves the room.
You can’t believe what you’re hearing. You’re getting a kid. You’re getting a kid. You’re finally able to start your own family.

The law still gives benefits to heterosexual couples that many gay people cannot easily access eg parenting benefits, tax advantages for having a partner who is more dependent on the other (gay relationships tend to have a more equal distribution of labour). I have no interest in having children but for instance if a straight woman had a child, there is a presumption of paternity for her husband. In many Western countries, this isn’t available to lesbians. A lesbian mother often has to adopt her own child if she didn’t give birth to it. How is that fair?
Why not concede you are wrong when you claim that homosexuality is promoted or privileged because that isn’t true? If that were the case and every single media arm is promoting it, you would expect to see the majority of the population internalise this message and therefore the percentage of homeless gay teens to be considerably lesser, people wouldn’t live in the closet or agonise about coming out to their families, people wouldn’t hide even the most banal references to their homosexuality in various situations such as in the workplace, significant political figures wouldn’t be releasing adverts or statements dedicated to attacking us as deviants etc?
And by the way I count on my fingers how many times I’ve seen the mainstream media include or celebrate gender non conformity, much less gay characters.
We don’t have as much power as you seem to think you do.
I’ve been reading your blog with an open mind actually so I wanted to challenge some of your statements.
I'm starting to wonder if you're just a really elaborate troll, since everything you've written above is so blatantly, self-evidently wrong, that you must be able to see it, but you're obviously committed to the bit, and they're good jumping off points to talk about things worth addressing, so I'll bite:
"if a straight woman had a child, there is a presumption of paternity for her husband."
That's because the child is his, made from his DNA. That's because he IS the child's biological father. The problem more men actually have is being forcibly made to pay for the financial support of children that aren't actually theirs, and the state tries to make it hard or even illegal for them to prove through DNA testing that the child is another man's.
"A lesbian mother often has to adopt her own child if she didn’t give birth to it. How is that fair?"
Because she's not the child's biological father or mother. The child is not made from her. Hence, the child is not "hers" by default.
If we refuse to acknowledge the physical realities and innate biological rights of parenthood, then any stranger could just walk into a playground, pick up a child and walk off with it, saying "I'm your parent now".
"Why not concede you are wrong when you claim that homosexuality is promoted or privileged because that isn’t true?"
Because it IS true, and unmistakably so. This is what a police force looks like in every western nation today:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"If that were the case and every single media arm is promoting it, you would expect to see the majority of the population internalise this message"
That's a very telling assumption, because you are saying there you believe that whatever the state forces upon the population will be the beliefs the people automatically hold in private. Which is like saying you expect the Tibetan people to sincerely hold the Communist beliefs of the invading Chinese army that has occupied them for the past 70 years. Or that if your country was invaded by a fascist dictatorship that did nothing but put out pro-fascist propaganda 24/7, you yourself would automatically believe in fascism.
No: people have their own beliefs, separate to whatever agenda the state is imposing upon them. Which is as it should be.
"And by the way I count on my fingers how many times I’ve seen the mainstream media include or celebrate gender non conformity, much less gay characters."
Tumblr media
That's a hell of a lot of fingers you must have there:

so like one can do whatever the heck they want in fanfiction and they’re under no obligation to stick to any degree of realism or do research or abide by canon or even the laws of reality and physics at all,
but I do wish English-language bnha fanfics would take into consideration that child adoptions in Japan are rare. Generally speaking, kids just don’t get adopted - the legality of blood ties are strong, biological parents are often prioritized even if they’re unfit, so much so that their consent is still needed to put the child anywhere; there’s cultural stigma, kids who do get adopted are usually very young - 6 or younger - so that couples can pass off the child as their biological own.
Like, the vast majority of adoptions in Japan is of adult men - families and businesses taking in an heir to continue the family name. That’s the ‘regular’ type of adoption. Adopting a child is ‘special’ adoption - literally called that.
(Then there would be other typical not-necessarily-cultural-specific factors - only married couples can adopt children, you can’t be too young or old, etc.)
Outside of formal adoption, there’s been attempts to get the children fostered in a family-based home, but mostly, kids are overwhelmingly placed in (small, overcrowded) child care institutions.
HeroAcaLand, though largely based on modern Japan, is set in a slightly more futuristic world, so it’s entirely plausible to say things have changed - adoption laws have changed, gay marriage is legal, so - let’s say - husbands Aizawa and Mic can adopt Eri (whose blood relatives are still alive). Or maybe All Might is just so rich and powerful that even though he’s single and nearing age 60, he can sidestep the rules to adopt Shimura Tenko - and he’s fine with ignoring cultural norms (ex. ensuring the Shimura lineage - Nana’s lineage - continues) so he even gives Tenko his last name.
However, canon is still based on current Japan, and the setting reveals itself in small but important details - orphaned Kouta is sent to live with his blood relative Mandalay; Nana gives up Kotarou to an orphanage and not another family; Eri would’ve been sent to a children’s home if UA didn’t specifically accepted her (partly because her quirk was liable to go berserk, and extremely luckily, here was the one guy who can stop her). Before that, she was already an abandoned child - her mom ditched her, left her with her grandfather, and when he fell into a coma, Overhaul was able to take over her guardianship with no one the wiser.
More on that point, actually: characters that we see take in lost, non-blood-related children to raise them to adulthood are… largely villains and criminals. All For One, Yakuza, Re-Destro. It’s easier for them because they simply ignore laws and any ethical problems that arise.
But the fact remains that people who most often give the orphans and runaways a home are not the Heroes and not the system the Heroes support.
Adopted kidfics are adorable. Fix-it fanfics are great. But I do wish they’re a bit more cognizant of cultural specifics, especially the things that set the foundation for the canon material that creates the need for these fix-it fics.

I DID NOT EXPECT TO DO ANOTHER ANALYSIS THOUGHTS WHATEVER POST BUT ARLECCHINO IS JUST TOO MUCH FOR MY NEURODIVERGENT BRAIN AND I NEED TO TALK ABT IT SO HERE WE GO AGAIN
Spoiler warning for Arlecchino’s character teaser!!!
If you haven’t yet, watch it here!!
Tumblr media
Look look. I really did not expect Arlecchino to be comprehensive, understanding or merciful (of her children) since in the Fontaine trailer she was critical of Lyney and Lynette and we did have other harbingers calling her a wolf in sheep’s clothing and things like that
Tumblr media
Oh fuck I screenshotted this at the wrong time LOLL anyway
BUT THEN SHE WAS SO KIND WITH THIS GIRL 😭😭
Despite telling her that she told her recklessness would lead to failure, she was not mad at her AT ALL – and I mean, completely fair, girl was literally on her deathbed – and instead decided to deal with the problem herself 😭😭😭😭😩😩😩🤯🤯🤯🤡🤡🤡 I WAS NOT EXPECTING THIS FROM A SUPPOSEDLY “STRICT AND UNFEELING FATHER”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, this isn’t my main point but the way she showed up like fricking bogeyman and crushed the nasty man’s skull with her HEEL was insane (positively) for me
Anyway LOL then she went, killed him, exposed his crimes and robbed all his money SO SHE COULD ADOPT MORE HOMELESS CHILDREN LIKE PLEASE THIS IS EXTREMELY CHAD AND BASED OF HER
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not only that, but she went back to her child and saw her off herself 😭😭😭😭 this shot of her closing her eyes, gosh this made me really emotional, especially considering what comes next
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She did mourn her death!!!! Not only that but she called her “her child”!!!!! Although she appears inexpressive, it must’ve been so hard to see the children you raised part like that.
And considering we’re talking about a whole orphanage, this is definitely not her first time, and won’t be her last either, it must be so hard to be the director of the House :(
Now, I gotta say I like her character even more after all this 😭😭😭😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am all for villains who are actually evil and nasty flawed people and I do like characters like that as well, but I feel like in Alrecchino’s case, it was kinda necessary for her to have a softer side?
I mean, again, we’re talking about an orphanage here. Her underlings are literally her own children, children like her who were abandoned at a young age, had nowhere to go and no one to take care of them. Not only that, but she has to train them to become underground agents and deal with dangerous situations at a young age. To become criminals even.
And this is all without even mentioning that she had to deal with generational trauma too. It’s a tendency for this type of children to become the opposite of their parents, and try to do better than them even if they do still have their own flaws. And I think this is shown wonderfully in Arlecchino.
She tries to put a front of a cold and strict father, but on the inside, she’s not as ruthless as she makes herself out to be. Even to the Traveler, who has been an “enemy” of the Fatui in various situations, she did not care about it and instead judged them to be a valuable ally (AND SHE WAS NOT WRONG!!!!)
It's really no wonder Lyney admires her and wants to be like her. Tbh I would feel the same way if I were in his shoes LOL Lynette and Freminet seem to respect her a lot as well, from what I've seen in the Archon quests and the story quests I mean.
I did not read all of the Hearth siblings lore however, so I may be missing some information about how she raised them, and there’s still the story quest and the Boss fight that still wasn’t released and I don’t look at this type of leaks LOL but still, you got my point!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another point I wanna mention is that this front of cold, unfeeling and harsh could be considered her flaw, even if it’s just a mask.
I mean, it is considered a toxic trait to pretend to be something you’re not. It could be people pleasing (no shame btw I am one myself), could be narcissistic traits like the previous Knave showed, and it could be pretending to be tougher than you really are, like in Arlecchino’s case.
In this case, she’s not only neglecting her own feelings and not letting them out (i.e.: not crying for her child’s death for example), but it can give the wrong impression to her children as well.
It gives the impression that she doesn’t care about them, especially at a young age, and especially considering they’re homeless children who have already been abandoned by their biological parents, and by the world itself.
According to studies on psychology, this situation makes children even more vulnerable to insecurity, low self-esteem, and gives them even more need for emotional connection and reassurance, which Arlecchino doesn't give them bc she's cold.
So yeah, Arlecchino IS still flawed and questionable in her own way, the children do feel the effect of this and her “good side” was necessary for her position and done wonderfully in my opinion.
Personally, I LOVE it when villains/anti-heroes are unhinged at the right people/moments but at the same time still have their kind side and their own issues. I mean, questionable people in real life do also have their good side, and this is exactly what makes them fucking nasty when they're nasty.
But I'll definitely talk more about this whenever I do make a post about Firefly from Star Rail! Gosh I have so much to say about her, just wait for me guys!!!

Y’all know what I think would make an interesting AU?
If everyone in the 90’s Young Justice was a clone or a “clone”
Canonically we’ve already got two out of the main ten
Conner Kent/Superboy being a “clone” of Superman & Lex Luthor
& Slobo being a clone of Lobo
Two things to note 1) I think it’s kinda boring if all of them have the same backstory so I’ll still try to give them all a reason that they’ve left Cadmus early in life
And 2) If we’re looking at all the various DC works 1 to 1 clones usually have some major issues
For example the other attempts at cloning Superman didn’t work, the DNA was too unstable
And in the DCAU, the Supergirl 1 on 1 clone had the side effect of being mentally connected to Supergirl which made her mentally unstable and Waller purposely avoided going the 1 to 1 route with Terry implying that it was still not a smart route to go down decades later
Therefore every “clone” will still have two “parents”
Let’s start with the other members of the core four
Tim - obviously a clone of Bruce, could add in Selena’s DNA if the scientists want some extra kick or he could still be the son of Janet so that he’s raised in a similar manner (rich kid upbringing) to Bruce
Janet and Jack could be having fertility issues and are given an opportunity to have a child through Cadmus and they just ignore all the weird stuff like rich people tend to do. Maybe they know Tim is Bruce’s clone, maybe they don’t. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Cassie - Diana Prince & Steve Trevor - not only would this give them access to the Amazons/Themyscira but also to a member of military personnel who knows a lot of stuff he probably shouldn’t
If this pairing Helena Sandsmark could be chosen to adopt her specifically so that she has a higher chance of interacting with the Greek gods which activates her powers (I mean Helena is already canonically interacting with them - might not be hard for Cadmus to realize that)
Could also do Diana & Helena Sandsmark, she could be in the same boat as Janet in the earlier scenario and just rolls with all the weird stuff.
Bart - Barry and Iris. Could still have the aging problem and still raised in Virtual Reality just some centuries behind the usual route. Imagine him thinking up the twins names himself - I mean Dawn and Don as twin names SOUND like they came from a kid raised in VR lol. When Barry and Iris later have the twins, they just roll with the names because Bart said them so matter of fact and Cadmus acts like they aren’t surprised that Bart got it right about Iris’s pregnancy.
Maybe they send him to go find Wally through suggestions from the VR so that he can better learn his powers/can become the next Flash and then Wally sends him to Max like in canon.
Now for the others…
Cissie - super easy Bonnie & Ollie. Bonnie as an Olympic-level archer wants her daughter to be the best archer and a hero and so she seeks out Cadmus and asks just straight up asks them for a clone.
Greta - I’m sorry to say is a mystery. She was a failed clone but no one seems to know who her original DNA came from.
Anita - could be a clone of her mother Oshi if Agua killed Oshi before she had Anita. Cadmus could reach out and be like hey Donald Fite it’s not the same as having your wife back but um, we could clone her? Give you a kid? Maybe Agua pushes for it idk
La'gaan - I couldn’t find much about his history prior to him becoming an Atlantis citizen so I imagine Cadmus might have captured his “parents” or maybe it’s someone who works with Orm and wants to send in a spy and though a child would be easier to get in than an adult. When Aquaman makes him a citizen he decides not to betray his confidence.
Ray - cloned from the original Ray and his wife or another golden age hero. Again pretty simple. Cadmus just thought he was neat. They are obsessed with Sun based superheroes after all. Ray is one I could see being locked up in Cadmus until the formation of the team since he was already locked away from the Sun in his origin story.
So at some point I imagine Tim would probably start to unravel things which would lead to similar events to canon (regarding the formation of the team I mean) but I just think it would be interesting since cloning is so prevalent in the DC universe to have an entire team of clones or “clones”
Maybe after distributing the other clones Luthor gets the idea to actually raise Conner himself which is always a fun AU
Plus with all this cloning going on they could potentially have the tools to prevent Slobo’s body from degrading which is a nice bonus
What do y’all think?

I like ur takes and I just wanted to share some stuff from another side. I watched spop as I was in my teen years, incredibly sheltered, queer, and lashing out because I was also dealing with abusive family dynamics. So… yeah I shipped it. I idealized it. And I heavily identified with Catra. But unlike with Zuko(who I also identify with) Catra didn’t change.
Every time she’d travel to a new part of the world I thought omg her moment is coming! Escape!! But she’d just get into a slap fight with Adora and then go back to the Horde. It was so strange it felt like every other character was in a story progression show and Catra was the villain of an episodic show until s5
And s5 was…. Weird. I don’t understand how Catra has a change of heart by getting more hurt by Horde Prime. She was getting hurt the whole series??? I still cried and was elated at the series finale but only bc I wanted an Adora who’d forgive me and love me and say I wasn’t bad. And I think a lot of people are like that.
Everything about the way Catra is framed points to her redemption even in the first episode… but it just makes me feel insulted now. To me as a survivor… it’s like they waved a magic wand and killed off the abuser and gave Catra a gf and that was supposed to fix it. It doesn’t work like that. My abuser died and it made things WORSE for a while (I think it would especially damage someone like Adora since Shadow Weaver “sacrificed” herself and therefore can’t be bad ever) . And I’m not looking for hyper realism in a Princess cartoon but at the time I watched it I couldn’t have really used yknow ?? Some guidance??? Something that wasn’t a fantasy lala ending that once the initial high wore off left me feeling confused and hollow. There is nothing in spop that teaches you how to get that kind of happy ending. Especially if you’re Catra who just says I love you and is suddenly resurrecting ponytail Jesus. To the me who identified with her, it was mostly about wanting to FEEL redeemed through her. FEELING strong and badass and GOOD and like things would be okay even if I was never a princess type. The actual result was feeling like I would never attain a happy ending of any sort because Catra’s didn’t feel real and her “arc” had no footsteps to follow in. How do you make a kids show and not teach good lessons??? Idk the show bad no matter who you identified with was my whole point.
At least I had/have zuko.
Also shipping zuko x sokka x suki is based I do too lmao.
first off, i'm so sorry about all the trauma you went through. i hope you are healing now, and thank you for sharing your story.
secondly, i think this is what a lot of fans felt. i can understand that people relate to catra. hell, even i relate to her a little. i know what it's like to be considered useless and weak, and to desperately want validation from a parent. i get it. when i say i dislike catra, it's not because she's a traumatized child or even because she adopted many of the toxic habits that shadow weaver portrayed. it's that she faced no consequences for any of this.
as much as spop tried to be mature, in the end, it was really childish. s5 got rid of all the complexity and just went "everyone deserves forgiveness", ignoring all of the glaring issues it had yet to solve. the protagonists forgave catra because the writers wanted them to, not because that's how it would have went down in real life.
most spop critics aren't heartless monsters who despise abuse victims, they are people who relate to either catra or adora. and they just want to see a better representation of abuse victims.
it would have been much more fulfilling and satisfying to have catra and adora take some time explore themselves and heal from their trauma, separated from each other. this kind of relationship is harmful for both of them. as long as adora is with catra, she'll continue blaming herself and putting pressure on herself, feeling as if she was responsible for everyone's problems. and as long as catra stays with adora, she'll continue deflecting her issues and being envious of adora. they needed time away from each other, but spop chose to invalidate trauma instead.
it's a pity that spop was one of the very few representation we had, at the time it came out, so people genuinely believe that c//a is a healthy ship, because they don't have many other examples to compare it to. i'm glad there are more and more queer shows coming out lately, and most of them seem to portray healthy relationships.

where's the rant ???
Alright so rant time: people constantly argue that making a character a transwoman is the same as making them a ciswoman and frankly that’s wrong. I’m sorry but it is. As a small disclaimer: I’m nonbinary and I am in school getting a sociology degree. I will be using sex to refer to biology and gender to refer to otherwise.
Using Tim Drake as an example: the stories you tell with a transgirl or a cisgirl version are incredibly different from each other. Because men and women are socialized drastically different from one another. While the character of Tim Drake (fierce, loyal, hard working, generous, and wanting to do so much good) wouldn’t change so much else about Tim would in either option.
With a transgirl Tim Drake, you have how society would react to her and coming out. I’d also argue that she wouldn’t come out until her teen years because of Jack. No one can tell me that this man would be okay with his kid being a transgirl. You just can’t tell me that. Janet is a toss up because of the limited information we have on her as a character. She however did neglect her kid, and in general I think that as new or old money, whichever you want to use, she would have problems with image, considering that a trans child could go bad for the PR. But even ignoring the parents, a transgirl!Tim would have a totally different story. I expect her story woudl go much like canon for a while until she is able to articulate that she is a girl. Then I expect backlash from people, one of them being Stephanie.
I’m probably in the minority when it comes to my thoughts that Steph is a straight woman who would react to her partner coming out as a woman badly because ‘what does that say about ME?!’ I won’t go into my issues with Steph. Others have done it way better but I do think that she and Tim both messed up their relationship even if frankly most of the blame is on Steph’s feet. BUT ANYWAYS: Tim coming out would cause issues there. A harsh reaction is never great for a baby trans kid and I can see Tim retreating as Steph goes off to complain to someone like Babs. Who I then think would be upset with Steph for outing Tim. Baba then acts as a pillar for Tim who slowly can come out on her own terms. Bruce and Dick I don’t think would have an issue and Jason? Let’s be real: Jason wouldn’t give a fuck in the sense it’s “okay wait, girl? Okay… I’ll still beat the shit out of you”.
The media would pitch a fit and I think that YJ would become closer over this, but I also think that there will be backlash from other members of the cape community. There just isn’t a way there wouldn’t be because while sure a lot are accepting you can’t tell me everyone is. Also the rouges. Unless Bruce asks Tim to pretend to be a guy still which… OUCH. I feel that is on brand and also something Tim would struggle so much with but want to obey while everyone is yelling at Bruce.
Then a transitioning Tim when her father wakes up probably wouldn’t go back to him because I doubt his reaction is a good one, and so she stays with Bruce. Probably becoming adopted. She and Cass would bond and I can see Tim developing further and becoming more confident as time goes on. She is less confident as Robin as she is not allowed to be herself.
The Damian and I’m torn. On one hand: I kind of like the idea that the League are all assholes but they also are chill with queer people cause Ra’s is creepy with canon Tim. In the other this is something he can attack Tim over and I doubt he’d give up the chance the little psycho.
So… Damian would be a thorn but I think that Dick steps in way more here because ‘baby assassin trying to kill Tim since he doesn’t know better’ is very different then ‘a transphobic kid being a shit to Tim’. Sad but true.
Tim’s story drastically changes by being a transgirl and it’s one that is VASTLY different then being a ciswoman because Tim still was socialized as a boy from birth. There is still a level of privilege she got from birth that a ciswoman doesn’t. People would react to her being trans in multiple ways such as denial or disgust.
But a cisgirl!Tim? Well…
People expect different things from the sexes. Women are supposed to be soft, gentle, not to loud and are supposed to be kind. Boys get to be demanding and loud and smart and rough.
Tim as a girl would have Jack and Janet reacting differently. It’s a personal headcanon for me that Jack imposes a lot of his traits onto Tim as a boy because ‘it’s my son and he is thus like me’. A girl though he’d expect to be a ‘cute and soft girl who is there for me to pull out of the closest’ because frankly the guy who willing marries someone not even a decade older then his kid who uses to be his physical therapist is a LOSER who would. Janet is again a toss up but I feel she’d have more of an impact for this Tim as being a woman in buisness or archeology is a field she had to climb and claw her way through. Things she would then pass on to her daughter.
Women are expected to be feminine and gentle. I’m actually fond of a girly fem!Tim compared to others, but I think it’s more of a punk girly then not. Janet totally would have weaponized her femininity in a way Tim tries to mimic. Dresses, soft smiles, doe eyes but a sharp mind about to rip you apart. Her interests in photography would be dismissed as ‘artsy girl’ and she’d be put into ballet or gymnastics with some comments over martial arts.
Women will have people talk about them if they do anything out of the ordinary. They aren’t supposed to ride skateboards or things because that’s what boys are expected to do. They aren’t supposed to like climbing things or other shit.
Tim as someone born a girl, and as either new money or old money, would be expected to have certain traits a boy is allowed to not have. So without a doubt she had etiquette lessons and dance lessons and anything else her mother might have decided were useful because Jack wouldn’t have noticed anything. Even if it’s cause Janet got mocked by people for not knowing I can’t see Tim not having these lessons.
Tim who has a great mask and who keeps her lives seperate this would have her high society mask, her vigilante mask, her public self and her real self because girls are still expected to act a certain way in public. Any interest that deviates form what society expects is brushed off as ‘she’s trying to be unique’ or ‘tomboy’ or ‘fitting in with the boys’.
We finally get to Robin now because Tim is still Tim and I don’t doubt she would do the same thing, fight to become Robin, but with this comes it’s own problems. Threats of sexual assault, comments about being a girl, crude comments about opening her legs or how she fights: all of these would follow her. We can go: some rouges are nice all we want but not all of them are.
Then we have Stephanie and that relationship is already drastically changed because Stephanie again is straight, and I think that Tim would be able to connect to Steph much better as a girl. I still think it wouldn’t be the healthiest of friendships because of everything but I also think that Tim being a girl while having hard lines is very different from a boy with boundaries because Steph knows as a girl what it’s like to have boundaries. She would feel bad for breaking them compared to ‘Tim is upset I found out his identity boohoo why is he upset with me?’.
We have Dick to and I’m going to be real honest: I think Dick is sexist enough to make assumptions of Tim. He doesn’t have issues with women but in general he’s a bit of a douche bag (sleeping with Babs while inviting her to his wedding with Kori anyone?) that he would put some expectations on this Tim related to being a girl. Of course Tim tosses those out of the water and I think he’d adapt but still: Dick is just… I think he’s the guy who puts a lot of stock into blood relations more then we know (ala Damian) and that he’s got a few assumptions about the Robin title along with thoughts on girls.
Bruce is… I think his expectations would be similar to canon with an emphasis on her being a girl. He knows competent women but in his world most of the female heroes are super powered or criminals, with Barbara being a shining example of a non-powered hero who got hurt. He’s going to compare it. I think it would either be worse then canon or he’s going to shove her off on female heroes more because he isn’t sure how to handle her.
Barbara as well I think is closer then canon to Tim being a girl and sort of the Batfam early compared to Stephanie. I actually think Babs would be a lot more posessive of Tim because of this, but this miiiight just be me. I know Tim and Cass would be incredibly close as well much like canon.
Jason and Damian though? Okay so I’ll be blunt: Jason is the kind of guy who is a feminist and supports woman’s rights but has a few issues with women he’s never been able to articulate. Society would press on him women are supposed to be fantastic mothers who put their families first and then he gets Sheila and Catherine. And while Catherine may have loved him society says she’s a terrible mother. Then we have Talia and no matter what the ‘sleeping together’ thing is fucked up. It just IS. So Jason has issues. However I think said issues being thrown into his face would make him stop short. Yet his reaction to a girl taking the mantle is one that would be… tricky as hell.
Damian? Damian is sexist and could go one of four ways: a) canon, b) WORSE then canon, c) dismissive and arrogant assuming she is just there to be trained and would be shoved out of the role as soon as he’s there no need to fight which turns into canon reaction when she isn’t or d) an assumption she’s there as a bride for someone. Because frankly it is something I can see him assuming. Bruce training a girl much like how Dick/Jason was trained so eventually they would marry to be solid heirs. The LoA is messed up and Talia might be a woman but she was raised there so there’s probably a ‘exception to the rule’ mentality with her. And I can see Damian either then: deciding he would be Tim’s groom as the true heir to the Bat or he would go: well time to marry her off now.
Either works. He’d still be violent and cruel towards her but that’s just Damian in general until he mellows out.
I think losing Robin in this world would be much more of a blow for Tim because of the sexism she’s faced. Being the lesser Robin for being a girl, how people reacted to her being feminine, seeing how Dick so easily tosses her aside for a male child. How people probably would go: yes! A good Robin finally! Or how his more violent reaction probably gets praised over her. Mixed in with the dismissal of Bruce being alive which feels worse as women are always getting dismissed by people and Tim lashes out harder then in canon.
We then come back to Babs because there’s only two ways she can react: canon or she goes ‘I’ll listen for real as I know the guys suck at listening to the girls’ and making her decisions that way. (And let’s be real Babs would know. Give me more female solidarity in comics and not the weird catty crap we get otherwise)
We then have canon happen with Ra’s being just as creepy mixed with a lot more sexism on her world tour.
One thing I do think would happen like canon is Tim realizing she’s bisexual when Fem!Bernard comes along and gets her thinking about it because girls are allowed to be touchy with each other so her not knowing is twice as likely.
These stories are VASTLY different from one another and the assumption that they wouldn’t be is insulting. Yes, transwomen are women but there’s still a huge difference in a story about either of them. Both these stories have very different thoughts and reactions from characters.
Just pretending that they’re one in the same is wrong. And pretending there’s a moral high ground when you claim they are is just being a dick.
