Gesture & Figure Studies

I mentioned in a previous post that a professor of mine gave me some resources that I find super helpful, and that once he fixed the links to those resources, I would share them here.

So, as promised, I'm making a post to compile the various online goodies I've been given/stumbled across on my own. All of these are super good resources to practice gesture drawing for free, and in a more comfortable environment than staring at a real person three feet away from you. Some of these are also good references to have for longer drawings, so feel free to use them in whatever way helps you! Links put below:

Before anything, I think it's important to explain what exactly gesture is. At its core, gesture is simply looking at some form of reference, and drawing what you see as quickly as possible. Gesture drawing isn't actually exclusive to drawing people; it's helpful with pretty much all subject matter, such as still-lifes or landscapes. This post focuses on figure studies, but the techniques found here can be used elsewhere too.

These exercises are typically done in increments of 30 seconds-5 minutes. That's not a lot of time, so it's very important to not get hung up on details while working. Instead, focus on whatever you're drawing in its entirety; the point is to capture the energy of whatever you're looking at, not each individual shape. These drawings tend to look a little goofy and that's perfectly fine! The important part is proportion and energy, not form.

Below are a couple of videos that I think best help introduce gesture drawing. Seeing it is action explains it better than words can, in my opinion:

I've been jumping back and forth between my (Mostly) Good Playthru of WOTR and my Asheera replay of BG3, and it's so interesting having these games shown in stark contrast so close to one another.

I am frothing at the mouth for Anevia/Irabeth fic though. Gotta go digging...

Finished The Night Circus. underwhelming. felt like it needed at least two more drafts tbh.

sorry to everyone that absolutely loves this book like I do see it. I see the appeal. But imo none of the elements that made it interesting were used to their full potential. I thought the plotline would have benefited from a tighter causal chain instead of things just happening at some point because someone decided it might as well happen now, I guess.

It's definitely a valid choice to treat the reader as a sort of outsider in order to prioritize a sense of mystery, but in some ways I felt too far removed to properly care about any of the characters or stakes.

Lots of unnecessary summary; not enough convincing me. More moodboard than story. Also apparently no one involved in any step of the publication process knew how to punctuate.

every once in a while, I read some smut. I know, shocking, right? In any case, I recently saw a book rec that had as its basic synopsis "A billionaire keeps a harem of supernatural creatures - an omega wolf shifter, a kelpie, a vampire, an incubus, a siren, a fey, and a 'vessel' (a human that stores magic and you have to... fuck it out of them to use it, I guess?). Brodie is sent undercover as the harem's medic to discover the billionaire's secrets".

This seems promising. Nsfwhump, paranormal funtimes, weird shit galore, count me IN.

And then... the whole book kind of skims over the nsfwhump entirely. Hell, there's barely any actual real whump! It was terribly disappointing and I was honestly so interested. The POV is primarily the Brodie man, but it switches off with Red, the wolf shifter, who considering he has been kept locked up for literal years, has almost no trauma as a result of this? Only two of the creatures even seem to have much at all.

I was kind of deflated by the end because I really wanted more build up to get me to care about the characters, and was interested in seeing their emotional/physical trauma play out as Brodie worked to rescue them. But you don't get to see all that much of it at all, and it feels like the plot breezes past you so fast you're struggling to keep up with how everything happens so quickly.

So now I'm just sitting here like... well damn it, why throw such a promising premise at me and then run away from it as fast as you can?

On the other hand, it inspired me to create a siren OC that I'm working out details of with @redwingedwhump as far as figuring out where I would want to go with the concept. I found "captive siren who isn't allowed to sing" wildly interesting, another concept that is just sort of touched on but it does sound like the siren will get his own book at some point. I just. I want him to feel more pain and if I cannot get pain from this story, I will make up a new OC and give that one the pain instead.

Do you have post-Emmy predictions or thoughts for Snook's career?

Oooo, I'm actually not too sure? She's such an incredible actress, and I'd really love her to hit the A-list, but her choices even since Succession started and her star rose have been kind of odd ones? Like Pieces of a Woman was such a bit part for her, albeit one in an interesting art house movie, Run Rabbit Run saw her as the lead in a pretty terrible psychological thriller, and The Beanie Bubble? Just - - yeah.

Really odd choices.

I do suspect her career has likely been impacted a bit by the fact that she moved back to Australia, married another actor who has a steady, ongoing gig (Dave Lawson's a part of the core ensemble in Utopia which is a very good and very funny sitcom here!) and has had a baby, to say nothing of the pandemic, and I think she's perhaps still feeling out herself what she'd like her career to look like.

That said, I thought it was really smart that both Sarah and Jeremy have gone back to theatre for their first major roles post-Succession, and Sarah's move I think is particularly smart strategically given it's a Sydney Theatre Company production being performed on London's West End, which kind of relaunches her in theatre in two different spaces.

Sydney Theatre Company is a huge deal in Australia and a world class company - Cate Blanchett and her husband, Andrew Upton were co-artistic directors there for a number of years, and it's a home for many of Australia's best actors like Rose Byrne, Toni Collette, Hugo Weaving, Heather Mitchell (my beloved!!). Sarah already had a relationship with STC prior to Succession - having played Joan of Arc in the STC production of Saint Joan in 2018 - so for one of her first major roles after the series to be back at the Company does really feel like both a homecoming and an opportunity to ascend within the theatrical elite in Australia. The production though that she's in being in the UK's West End I feel offers that two-fold as well.

Getting back into STC though I think opens her doors again to local connections, particularly with the Cate Blanchett set and given Blanchett's been moving steadily into producing in Australia, I could see Sarah being cast in one of her productions? Hopefully a film, given The New Boy and Shayda were infinitely better than Stateless, haha.

In my experience with actors in Australia, the ones with young children tend to lean towards theatre residencies and TV because it's (generally speaking) better / more flexible hours and steadier work, and in many ways, Australian TV is having a bit of a renaissance right now with shows like The Newsreader, Deadloch and Boy Swallows Universe, so I could absolutely see her headlining a mini-series? Perhaps a literary adaptation?

I'd love to see her in something from Jane Campion, Jennifer Kent or Goran Stolevski, and I think all three are a possibility - Goran probably least at this stage just because he's such a new voice.

I think she'll probably pop back up in some US films and TV, and I think she'll probably land a few really meaty ones, but I do kind of think she might be more likely to work between Australia and the UK in the future? I couldn't quite tell you why, and I could be wrong, but yeah. I guess my prediction is that she'll have an incredible career, but I don't necessarily think it'll be US-centric post-Succession, or tremendously high profile.

The thing about Edward and Izzy is when I say they are in the middle of a contested divorce what I mean is Edward is using all his focus on avoiding his problems and trying to bang Stede, so he's barely aware that he's pretty much constantly sending divorce papers in Izzy's direction, and 9 out of 10 times Izzy is lighting those papers on fire - very "til death do us part you son of a bitch!" - which is mildly irritating to Edward as it keeps throwing a wrench in the avoiding problems / banging Stede thing.

However! Every time Izzy considers divorce and goes "You know what, FINE!" Edward whips around at the speed of sound to shut that down because Izzy is not going anywhere. First it's "Babe, no, come back, I swear I'll do better!" and later it's "Don't you fucking dare!" but regardless, divorce is off the table any time Izzy is considering it.

Which does beg the question why a divorce contested on both sides is happening at all.

(Get these men some marriage counseling and a primer to polyamory, because I don't think that divorce is keen on going through any time soon!)
