ik a common pet peeve ppl have with media is that trope of a villain having a really good point about society then immediately killing a baby to achieve it or smth and how it's used by people in power to demonize these criticisms of them. but i do think in bsd when antagonists make a good point it still stands and it's still a good point regardless of what they do about it, and the narrative does not want you to perceive them entirely negatively. like, there's a reason atsushi spends a few chapters in a conflict bc he agrees with fukuchi's ideas, just thinks his methods are harmful. the story lingers on it bc it wants you to stop and think and see the good in them, i think, and not to be mean and turn it around like a "gotcha! you are just as bad for agreeing!" or smth.
i think it all stems from how every character in bsd is morally grey in order to humanize them. every antagonist is presented in a positive light at some point (only exception i can think of is fyodor, who so far hasn't been presented in a really grey way either), their motives or ideals are laid out so you can understand WHY they're doing the things they're doing, and eventually they end up working with the protagonists because well. they're all humans at the end of the day.
the thing driving all protagonists in bsd is simply to keep living (each have their own asterisk next to that, but i won't get into details) and usually keep others safe. they beat the forces that stand in their way of achieving this, but for a moment, these forces' own goals get reflected back onto them, and they become a vehicle for them as well, at times.
it's less of a "villain makes a good point then kills a baby to make you disagree with them", more like "villain makes a good point but the story lingers on it so both you and the in-universe characters think about it and consider it. they also kill a baby but that's more like a personal character flaw that might get ironed out of them with the power of friendship"
that's also why wildly loved characters that are generally considered positive start out trying to kill the protags (akutagawa, chuuya, lucy, poe, sigma, the hunting dogs etc). you know WHY they do this. you know what led them here. you also saw other sides to them - silly moments, helping their comrades or innocent bystanders, positive interactions with the main cast - which help make them feel more human, thus making them easier to understand for us as readers.
idk man i think it's p cool
EDIT: i will also add!!!! that imo fyodor seeming purely evil despite bsd's attempt at humanizing its characters!!!! is less of a fault in writing but rather showing how he dehumanizes HIMSELF. he views himself as more than human. characters like sigma view him as more than human. and so, for now, the narrative will treat him as such too - not bc he's right. but bc it serves his current story, and hopefully a future arc will have him unlearning that, or more layers will be peeled from him so at least we as an audience can see his humanity (i have a feeling the information sigma got from him + the injury dazai gave him + him being bested in general + whatever the fuck "that man" comment was, will all play a part in that)

I am begging for every single one of your thoughts actually
so, i'm an afab, trans/nb human with a shorter pixie cut than eve gilles. i think it's plain ridiculous that expression in any sense of the word is treated as a means to a reductive end. there is no one way to look. to hold the opinion that "women with short hair" is waving some political flag is to completely disregard the agency women have to express themselves however they choose, especially in a society that taxes them on the basis of some nonsensical, one-note image.
my mother has a similar haircut to me. she is no less a woman because of that. if i enjoyed having longer hair, that would not make me any less trans/nb. neutrality of expression both recognises that you are neither dictated by how you choose to express yourself, and that there is beauty in seeing a reflection of exactly who you are, no matter the steps you took to discovering that. for some, expression helps them understand themselves better. for others, it is simply what they have decided looks good. across the spectrum, we are all on a journey to seeing the truest reflection, and to throw the word "woke" on it just perpetuates the idea that humans belong in boxes.

Shoutout to this voice memo i sent my friend (who knows nothing about Star Trek) earlier, very distraught, describing DS9 S4E18 “Hard Time”
I find it entertaining because I was (am) So upset.
(Transcribed)
“Sometimes, sometimes the morals of a Star Trek episode is like ‘And the moral of this is that not everything goes away easily. You just have to live with things and move on and all it will never leave you. You can learn to cope with it and deal with it better’ and I'm like no no you're you're my silly little sci-fi show, you can very easily make up a believable cure so that it goes away conveniently in 45 minutes. Do not make my silly little guys go through that. Because- because one characters— Miles… They put him in 20 years of prison in a memory thing (like he fully experienced all of that, he reacted to it in just a very, very sped up time. He technically did spend 20 years in a prison) and then he just had to go back to normal. And like they showed an adjustment period, anger issues, hallucinations, depression, all that stuff, genuine side effects of whatever the fuck happened but at the end they were just like ‘yeah here's a treatment not a cure. We can help you with the hallucinations with the depression, but we can't get rid of the memories.’ I'm like what the fuck. Yes you can get rid of the memories. It’s Star Trek!”
I would add the actual video because I sound on the verge of tears the entire time, which is important, but that’s also personal as fuck so :) transcription it is!

I’ll probably never shut up about this, but GOSH, I love that I predicted Willow breaking down in FTF, along with her always needing to be reliable to others WHILE going back into her “half a witch” mentality with Hunter and Gus there as well, and I don’t trust anyone that says it came out of nowhere!!
The most obvious example of that was in “Understanding Willow” which was in SEASON ONE, hence the title of the episode and that fact that we also saw a glimpse of her emotions in her literal mind!!! We also saw her going back and forth with herself in “Any Sport in a Storm” with her training sequence AND her speech to herself at her mirror!!!
AND THEN “Labyrinth Runners” comes along, and she’s doubting herself because of how Amity was unintentionally babying her; she lashes out at Amity because she wants her to see her for who she really is!!! Then here comes “Clouds on the Horizon” with her going BATSHIT when she saw Luz disguised as Hunter getting taken away from Kikimora.
Then there is a VERY UNDERRATED scene in “King’s Tide” where she’s talking to King and she says that there’s always a way to help, aka be reliable to people, which is why that even though she’s scared out of her life, she sees her friends and Alador arguing and even gets food for them because of what she said to King earlier. I also think that, to a specific point, her silliness in TTT was sort of a way to cope with the trauma as well!!! (but also she’s just a kid so not entirely!)

OKAY SO. I was asked for my aurebesh thoughts and I shall deliver! @zeawesomebirdie this is for YOU <3
Here's what the standard version of the aurebesh (I used it like you'd use the word alphabet because well, it's alphabet but in SW speak) looks like, rewritten by me but faithful to the most widely accepted version that I know of.
Tumblr media
Now, this is all fine and good for computer fonts, since you're at best typing them with a keyboard. But to actually write, with a pen or stylus? Extremely inconvenient. Try to write that A cleanly but in one try. That's just not easy to write: the diagonals, the two different parts, it's just not made to be written.
I can hear you think "it doesn't need to be written though does it, who still writes on paper in the GFFA?" and fair, but. But. 1) some people just like Doing It Like They Used To in Ye Olden Days and there must be a thriving community of calligraphy enthusiasts making their own paper and writing in ink. 2) if WE can have apple pencils they can have styluses, if only to draw, and a natural extension of that is writing little notes. 3) and most important I think, but often disregarded, it's easier to learn a new writing system if you make your hand go through the motions. Obviously there are exceptions and obviously you can still learn by just seeing but actually going through the motion and gesture? That really helps a majority of people. Source: I took japanese and russian classes, and therefore had to learn both the japanese writing system and the russian cyrillic alphabet, and yes, putting in the effort to copy the symbols again and again with a pen in your hand works much better than trying to remember it from having seen it, and it was the same for a lot of other people in my classes.
(Obviously the aurebesh was developped hastily by people who wanted to make it a font before anything else AND who are most likely american, which is a country where they don't teach you cursive anymore apparently, so that influences things)
All of this to say, I think since the fun of being a fan is filling in the holes of canon and having fun with your stuff, I tried thinking of what a more realistic aurebesh would be like.
From my deep dive on wookieepedia a while back, I learnt that a few actual alphabets of our world exists in the GFFA, like Tionese is written using Greek and Sith markings are Hebrew letters, + our roman alphabet is called High Galactic, but is a very fancy thing most people don't use. So, the aurebesh is the standard writing system of galactic basic, which means it's probably very widespread. I imagine that people actually do learn to write with some kind of stylus, just to get you to remember quicker and because either you have access to the equivalent of an apple pencil, you can find a ballpoint pen somewhere, or you have an outside with dirt/sand and some kind of pointy stick thing. That means we need a more writing-friendly version of the aurebesh (not even a cursive version, just an easier block letter version, I'm still brainstorming that one because god this was NOT made to be cursive but my love of cursive is powering me through)
So here's how I write the aurebesh!
Tumblr media
Purple are letters I've rewritten but without real changes, and blue are actual changes, ranging from "yeah I could tell what this was" (p, o, v) to "I think you need to know that it's this letter to be able to tell" (a, g, eo). I'm pretty proud of that A honestly! Generally, I rounded out things that could be rounded out, made simpler things that didn't need to be complicated to be understood, and reduced the number of strokes necessary, because needing to lift your pencil and come back for a second stroke is a huge time loss. You might also be able to tell that I took japanese for 4 years in my squares: the TH looks like a 日, the W like a ロ, the K like a コ, and the H is basically a 三 because I like to work smarter not harder and I love japanese. I made the V into a normal Y from our alphabet, and I still get I and L mixed up a lot of the time, but here it is. And YES I forgot the numbers but uuuh tbh I always forget them so yeah haha. Might do a few sentence samples just for fun + to show what it looks like when I write it VS my normal handwriting (because I'm a handwriting amateur)
Another note: I hate with all the fibers of my being the "reverse the letter and that marks it as a capital" because it is incredibly clunky and inconvenient. Nobody does it like that and it's stupid. I think making them bigger/smaller like the computer font version of cyrillic is the way to go honestly, like Д for capital and д for lowercase. I don't have the words to explain why but you should not mirror a letter and make it a capital that is bad and wrong and it clearly was thrown in there last minute when people asked. Either everything is capitals or the lowercase is smaller but please no mirroring T-T
If you have anything to contribute I am BEGGING please come tell me. If you have cursive aurebesh ideas I will ask for your hand in marriage right here and there. When I told my best friend about this they said "oh my god this is like Tolkien why are you thinking about how the people of the galaxy would use their alphabet what is wrong with you (affectionate)" and yeah.
(Also ALSO bonus aurebesh fonts I like, apart from the standard one: the Aurebesh Droid, Rodian, Cantina, and Typewriter. )

interesting discussion for sure. I think with any tv series that runs for a long time and has a lot of the same cast and crew it's bound to go through these changes. as the production goes from maybe younger people to people w/ their own kids and young families the idea that they'd take more inspiration from their personal lives and experiences with kids/family makes a lot of sense and is something I've talked about lol
also why im not episode about how it feels like some bob's burgers episodes end with a "moral lesson" now like a kids show because.... it makes sense to me?? that the writers and directors etc would naturally grow more into that as they age and be less interested in the vulgar type of humor, thinking about their own kids and lives. I know almost all the main voice actor's have young kids of their own too so of course that factors into the performances for these characters and how they'd want to protray certain things. change is a natural thing that happens as a show continues & the people involved have their own changes in life and responsibilities but it's never talked about as like. a good thing or even a thing people UNDERSTAND. as you age the type of stuff you want to write about is always going to change and expand
inanimate insanity is another good (and more dramatic) example of this considering they were literal kids when they were producing s1 and since then they've gone to high school, gone to college and got writing and film production degrees, got real jobs and been in relationships etc like they've changed and their interests have changed. OF COURSE the writing is going to change too. and thats a good thing!!! keeps it fresh and true to life
