Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Review
I miss Chadwick Boseman.
Chadwick Boseman will always be The Black Panther, T'Challa. When news broke that the actor passed from colon cancer in 2020, it was heart-wrenching. Beyond portraying an iconic superhero, the world lost a genuine, kind soul. One that inspired children to want to be like him. One who donated thousands of dollars to programs like the Boys and Girls Club. His passing was tragic, and there will never be another like him.
As news broke of a Black Panther sequel in the works, everybody wondered, "How do you do a Black Panther sequel without Black Panther?"
Well, there was an attempt. And it was great.
After the death of King T'Challa, Queen Ramonda, Shuri, Okoye, and the Dora Milaje work together to protect their nation from other world powers looking to intervene. The Wakandans are skeptical of the other countries that aren't Wakanda. Tensions and emotions are high after the passing of T'challa. And as the Wakandans are so focused on the humans, a new force presents itself as an enemy to Wakanda: the Talokans.
There's so much in this film that works. Acting-wise, everybody performs amazingly. Letitia Wright, as Shuri, has grown up since the last Black Panther film and has no choice but to grow up and take a role she thought unfathomable. The loss of her brother affected her deeply, shaking her foundation to its core. She found faith in science over tradition for a considerable amount of time. Danai Gurira, as Okoye, grieves in her way and provides excellent chemistry with Shuri and other cast members. But Angela Basset as Queen Ramonda? Her presentation is immaculate. When Ramonda presents herself to her subjects or enemies, she's a majestic beacon of royalty. She's that bitch. But when she's alone with Shuri, she takes off the headwear and appears more vulnerable with her daughter. Basset tightropes between both displays effortlessly. In one of the trailers for Wakanda Forever, there's a snippet that shows Ramonda as she says, "I am the queen of the most powerful nation in the world, and my entire family is gone. Have I not given everything?" The delivery of that line is perfect. That scene is enough proof that Angela Basset deserves an award for her role.
And as far as antagonists go, Tenoch Huerta makes for a fantastic Namor. In the comics, Namor and his people appear Atlantean with Anglo-Euro origins. Injecting Latin flavor into the character and his civilization was an intriguing choice that I loved seeing as a person of Hispanic heritage. Namor is a top-tier foil to Shuri and the others. His motives are understandable, and the character is menacing. He's not even a villain. I emphasize that he's more of an antagonist. The fight scenes between the Wakandans and the Talokans are energetic and make for a fascinating watch. A particular favorite of mine involves a Talokan and Okoye on a bridge.
Unfortunately, there are some gripes I harbor with the film. Dominque Thorne plays Riri Williams and makes a fine debut. Her scenes with the Wakandans are a bit lacking. Her character reminds me of Shuri in the first Black Panther. I would've liked something more substantial with her, but I feel that may come in her upcoming show "Ironheart." I look forward to getting more of a taste of her there. Also, lacking screen time were the other Talokans. Namor remains stellar, but his subordinates Namora and Attuma are less memorable as characters. Attuma has a solid fight scene in the movie, but I can't tell you much of anything about either of the character's motives or personality or otherwise. M'Baku is not in the film as much as he should be. And finally, Martin Freeman and Julia-Loius Dreyfus appear in scenes mostly distant from Wakandan's direct conflict, and they're the least interesting parts of the movie. I like Freeman and Dreyfus immensely and in the other Marvel projects they have appeared in, but whenever they were on screen, I found myself wanting to see what Shuri or Namor was doing. Honestly, the scenes with them should have been replaced with more scenes dedicated to building up Namor, Attuma, and Namora's characters.
So there are a couple of choices they could have made to improve the film but don't get me wrong, it's still great. The acting, action, and heart drive the movie to immense highs. It's my favorite superhero movie I watched this year, and in the top ten films, I saw this year. 4/5.
The movie deserves so much praise, even to the end. Without spoiling, there's only one credit scene in the film, and it's the best post-credits scene any Marvel movie has had. It's not an exciting, thrilling romp that reveals a game changer of a character, like "The Avengers" teasing Thanos. Nor is it something comedic or goofy like the ant playing drums in the end credits scene of "Ant-Man and the Wasp." What makes it the best is that it's a beautiful reveal. It's one more tug at the heartstrings that's sure to leave audiences teary-eyed.
A beautiful ode to the wonderful man that was Chadwick Boseman.

I went to the movies! I saw Wakanda Forever. It was....a movie.
Yes, the movie was a touching tribute to Chadwick Boseman. This tribute cast a long shadow over the film that it could never quite escape from to form its own identity. I mean, the movie's internal issues were its own, but I do think they, to a certain degree, stalled on this issue.
What...was...the...deal...with the Contessa and Everett Ross? They literally served no narrative purpose aside from being "government white people." Why pay Martin Freeman and Julia Dreyfuss for that? Sudden governmental spooky tech that specs out vibranium in the ocean? Real subtle, guys. Oof.
This being said, I loved the guy who played Namor. There was this consistent melancholy/angst to the character that was wholly unexplored, but I felt was compelling. Same with his interactions with Shuri. I dearly wish those sequences had been fleshed out.
(Unfortunately, after getting into Rick and Morty over the past few months, it's kind of hard to think about Namor without thinking of Mr. Nimbus and everything associated with that. And honestly, Nimbus was a better-written character).
(Also, I kind of lost the plot with the whole neo-Avatar Meso-American Underwater Empire going on. They had a beef with the onworlders (understandable) but I wasn't entirely certain what that issue was?)
(Can I also shout out to the very vague Gungan City vibes of the Underwater?)
I liked Riri, but from everything I read about the movie, I thought she'd be more...involved? It was all very shoe-horned.
Oh good, Okoyoe got a "turn in your badge and gun" scene.
Angela Bassett acted her ass off in the few scenes she had.
Michael B Jordan should try and seduce everyone to the dark side. I'd join.
So instead of ending in Oakland, we end in Haiti. Okay, cool. I mean, I'm not going to hate on the message, but it seems rather derivative.
I did enjoy the fact there was a singular, very oblique reference to Zemo in the film.
T'Challa Jr. arrives! No idea what this will mean.
This is the first MCU project I've watched in a while and...well, yikes. The word pastiche comes to mind more than narrative. I still have no idea what this film was trying to communicate. More annoyingly, it had moments that it could sink into but never quite did.
6/10 my metrics have gotten a bit harsher in my slightly older age

Thoughts on the weirdest, most balls to the wall Castlevania game? :P
Tumblr media
this is a serious game about revenge
Curse of Darkness is a marked improvement on almost everything in Lament of Innocence, but still not quite enough.
The plot is simple at first: three years after C3 (I love when games have connections to each other like this), in an Europe ravaged by Dracula’s curse, Hector is on a quest to avenge the death of his girlfriend (of course): he used to be a general of Dracula’s army, having the important role of Devil Forgemaster, but he grew tired of the senseless death and turned his back on the Lord: as revenge, his former friend Isaac accused his girlfriend of being a witch. There's more revealed in the tie-in comic, but it's not strictly necessary. This is a good premise for me. I like both Hector and Isaac: Hector for being a former villain and his aggressive demeanor, and Isaac because... well, look at him <3 also Trevor is thrown into the mix, because we need a Belmont in our Castlevania. (no Sypha or Grant, surprisingly. Alucard was napping so he’s justified, I guess, but really, Trevor’s OP wife decided to stay home?)
The rest of the plot is more.. random? There’s a woman who looks like the spitting image of Rosaly and she’s a witch and she’s also Isaac’s sister and of course she gets together with Hector at the end, there’s a honest-to-goodness time lord involved which at the end of the day does nothing except give you a boss battle, then a priest was Death all along (and, really? Zead, Death?)...
Also, while the dubbing is okay, with special shout out to Crispin Freeman and Lian O'Brien chewing the scene as Hector and Isaac (Julia OTOH sounds like she's reading the lines for the first time), the translation is pretty ridiculous, full of "t'is" and trying too hard to sound old-fashioned. But it's charming :P
Also also, I will never let go of the scene where the highly flamboyant Isaac impales Trevor from behind, very very close to him, and kisses his hair as the poor guy is grunting in pain (bur surprisingly lucid). I cannot make this up. What kind of game am I playing.
(sadly this scene marks the end of Trevor being present or even mentioned in the game. It’s like they wanted to get him out of the way... and that’s how they chose to do that. okay)
Onto the gameplay!
There have been many improvements. While you can't rotate the camera, it rotates with you and you can adjust it with L1, and that’s really nice. Warp rooms are finally back, and smartly placed too, but you can also use warp tickets if necessary. There’s more incentive in fighting enemies because you level up, and Hector himself moves in a snappier way than Leon (although he seems to slide all over the place). Enemies display a level, which tells you how easily you can beat them. There are even some small but appreciated improvements, like smoother transitions between doors, and a pointer that appears when you’re near a save room or a warp room, in case you don’t recognize the door.
They didn’t fix how slow you move, though, and this time it feels even worse because corridors are much longer and much emptier. The jump is also even stiffer than in LoI, reminding me of Amy’s in Sonic ‘06: its only purpose is to go higher, to attack airborne enemies or more rarely to climb on ledges. Not that you need it much, but I was hoping for a form of faster movement...
Some other nitpickings because I can: I’m also not a big fan of the automatic lock on as soon as you guard. No weapon in the game justifies a lock on feature, and it’s just disorienting. Hitting enemies in the air is a little awkward, because the depth perception is still a problem. Also, they nerfed the dodge mechanic, and you need much stricter timing to be invincible lol.
You can find material to fuse with your weapons, which is similar to DoS but far, far easier. The weapons are all useful, with different properties: personally, while swords are by far the best weapons, I even had a kick using the knuckles, which are so fast that they compensate for their lower strength. There are so many weapons that the subweapons are for once absent: the hearts are used for the Innocent Devil system.
The ID system is... peculiar, and ngl at first I was overwhelmed by the 5 pages or so of information, but it’s not bad. These little critters help you in various ways, from healing you, to fighting with you, to letting you glide... The biggest draw is evolving the IDs, thanks to the differently colored EVO Crystals that you collect. This allows for much more replayability, gives you a reason to experiment with different weapons, and it’s another incentive to fighting enemies even when not forced.
Tumblr media
The possibilities are nearly endless!
The structure of the game is different. Instead of a bunch of “dungeons” to explore in whatever order you like, the progression is more linear: you go from the Abandoned Castle, to the Baljhet Mountains, to the Garibaldi Temple, to the Mortvia Aqueduct, etc. Sometimes, you have to backtrack to get to the next area (you need to find the Brute Force power in the Temple to open the iron gate in the Mountains that lead to the Aqueduct), but overall, it’s basically “get from point A to point B”.
Overall, this definitely feels like a game where combat was placed on a much higher priority than platforming or exploration: fighting enemies is fun, even cathartic, but the game is even more fond of locking you in “defeat all enemies to proceed” rooms than LoI; and as for the maps... I’m torn. Let’s use Baljhet Mountains as an example:
Tumblr media
Look how big it is. You can even spot some backtracking moments, secrets to be found once you have the right power, in true Metroidvania fashion. But it’s far, far more linear than even Lament of Innocence, which had more branching paths: it just looks more complex because of the winding path. The branching paths here seem to be here more for the sake of making 100%ing the maps more laborious. There are also far less secrets, one breaking wall per area more or less. The equivalent of that is doors that can only be opened by a special ID power - a vine door that has to be burned down, big gaps to be crossed by an evolution of the Bird ID, a switch that can only be pressed by a particular evolution of the Fairy ID... it’s not possible to 100% the game on your first try unless you’re lucky, but it does give you yet another incentive to experiment with your IDs.
The lack of platforming is especially egregious in the Eneomaos Machine Tower. The clock tower has always been hard as hell, with dangerous gears and annoying Medusa Heads. Here? Just some tough enemies and some gears to hit in order to move. There is a room that is full of gears and conveyor belts, and I thought I had to jump on them, but my Bird ID kept slamming into invisible walls. I had to hit one gear, and a cutscene would open the wall for me. I don't know why I got so irritated near the end of the game, but yeah, the devs went from an extreme to the other.
Even the complexity of the maps is irregular. Some maps are really labyrinthine, like the Garibaldi Temple...
Tumblr media
The Eneomaos Machine Tower is linear, but has a cool ascending motif...
Tumblr media
... but the Aiolon Ruins are just a straight line.
Tumblr media
Infinite Corridor should have been the subtitle of the entire game :\ no wonder the game has a fetish for chairs, poor hector much have constantly sore feet
Dracula’s Castle, the endgame, is by far the biggest area in the game (not counting the optional areas), with a whopping 10 floors. This is not a good thing: it’s basically going up, down and all around fighting annoyingly strong enemies, in rather boring-looking rooms. No secrets to find, no gimmicks whatsoever. Barely an improvement over the Pagoda in LoI.
Also wow is this game stingy with money. By the third area I still had around 200 coins - that’s enough to buy one healing potion. Only near the end of the game I could rack up more than 500 coins, and mainly through selling Devil Shards. Also, suddenly putting a cap on healing potions seems like an arbitrary way to make the game harder.
The bosses are... a bit of a step down? I didn’t find most of them as well designed as the ones in LoI, they’re just tanky. St. Germain and Trevor were really fun though, challenging until you understand their rhythm (also the former caught me off guard with his third life bar lmao). Dracula's second form gave me some trouble, but more due to his obscene HP :P
Interestingly, accessing the bonus boss here is much easier than in LoI. In the previous game, you had to find an item in the very last area, after some annoying platforming. Here? You only need to backtrack to Garibaldi Temple after finding the Devil ID. I don’t think you even get anything aside from the satisfaction of beating a hard boss.
Visually, it’s about the same as LoI, but less elegant. The areas can be either murky and uninteresting (the "nature" areas and Dracula's Castle) or atmospheric (Garibaldi's Temple, Infinite Corridor). Cordova Town is probably the most interesting area in a Castlevania game so far: I would have never expected a zombie town! The cutscenes are also a step up compared to LoI’s: I especially liked the choreography of the Trevor vs. Isaac fight.
Musically, well, it’s Michiru Yamane taking advantage of real instruments, what can I say? :V The OST overall ditches LoI's atmospheric style, having more in common with SoTN’s style. It’s far rockier than the usual too:
Abandoned Castle is one hell of an introduction for our revenge-thirsty protagonist
Followers of Darkness -The First- is the equivalent of the Werehog battle theme: I hate it because it plays so much, but I can’t deny that it’s a badass theme
Garibaldi Temple is your typical Yamane classical goodness. It reminds me a lot of The Prayer of a Tragic Queen and Wood Carving Partitia.
Cordova Town, much like the area itself, is nothing like a Castlevania piece, preferring clean guitars and a gloomy tone; I like how it brings back the synth heard in Abandoned Castle
Eneomaos Machine Tower fits how high up you ascend
Dracula’s Castle screams “endgame”, and it’s a constant crescendo of tension
Followers of Darkness -The Third- is just a good, pumping boss theme
Young Nobleman of Madness and its shredding guitars are perfect for the unhinged Isaac; it seems to be a companion piece for Festival of Servants
Legendary Belmont is scary, and truly conveys how out of his depth Hector isagainst the man who defeated Dracula.
also, this exists. I wish I can convey in text the face I made when I stumbled into this room :V
So, in summary: CoD feels a little like Metroid 2, in that I can't say that it's Castlevania in name only, but it's so different that it barely belongs in the same genre. It reminds me of the first part of OoE, all combat, little to no exploration. But with OoE, I could at least see a timid experiment in bringing the Metroidvania genre closer to the Classicvania one, but here? Much like LoI, it seems to be a consequence of Igarashi’s lack of experience with 3D games.
I had fun with this game, but not for gameplay reasons. CoD is charming: the sheer amount of stuff you can craft, including absurd anachronistic weapons, the complexity of the ID system, the hammy performances, Isaac, the many many out-of-place chairs... it’s engaging! It has that ShTH-esque over-the-topness that I find so endearing :P The game itself, though? Ehhh. It’s not bad, certainly much better than LoI, but it feels like there’s something missing. Still, "okay" seems to be a great accomplishment for a 3D Castlevania game.

The parents of the 15-year-old accused of fatally shooting his teenage brother and four adults in Raleigh, North Carolina, said in a statement released Tuesday that they are “overcome with grief.”
“Words cannot begin to describe our anguish and sorrow," said the parents, according to NBC affiliate WRAL of Raleigh.
They said their son "inflicted immeasurable pain on the Raleigh community, and we are overcome with grief for the innocent lives lost."
NBC News is not identifying the parents or the suspected shooter because he is a minor. The suspect also has not been publicly identified by Raleigh police.
The Oct. 13 shooting unfolded after 5 p.m. in a neighborhood northeast of central Raleigh and prompted warnings for residents to stay inside. The crime scene stretched over two miles, Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson said last week.
Police took the suspect into custody after a "long standoff." He remains in critical condition, according to Julia Milstead, a spokesperson for the city.
The parents said they are praying for the families of the victims: Nicole Conners, 52; Susan Karnatz, 49; Mary Marshall, 35, who was planning to get married this month; and off-duty Raleigh police Officer Gabriel Torres, 29, who was on his way to work.
The parents of the suspected shooter added that they are also mourning the loss of their other teenage son and praying for two victims who were injured — Raleigh Police Officer Casey Clark, 33, who was treated and released from a hospital; and Marcille Gardner, 59, who was in critical condition as of Saturday, according to Milstead.
The parents added they are also praying for "everyone who was traumatized by these senseless acts of violence."
The parents said they "have so many unanswered questions," adding that "there were never any indications or warning signs that [our son] was capable of doing anything like this."
"Our family will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement officials and do whatever we can to help them understand why and how this happened," they continued.
Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman has previously said prosecutors intend to charge the shooter as an adult.
The statement notes that the parents are not planning to speak with the media.
Lawyers for the parents could not immediately be reached Wednesday.
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper called the shooting spree “the nightmare of every community.”
President Joe Biden said in a statement Friday he is grieving alongside the families whose loved ones were killed.
“Jill and I are grieving with the families in Raleigh, North Carolina, whose loved ones were killed and wounded in yet another mass shooting in America,” Biden said. “We are thinking of yet another community shaken and shattered as they mourn the loss of friends and neighbors, including an off-duty police officer.”

132 books! Holy moly. I know it would be asking A LOT but do you think you could post a list of all books? If you don’t want to it’s ok. But wow….
HAHA I know it's nuts but I always have a book on me so I reread in between any free moment. It also turns out that it's 130 books since I double-checked on GoodReads!
I initially had a reading goal of 75 books then bumped it to 100. Throughout this year I've realized, I pick and choose between hobbies so if I'm reading, I don't do any other things. So I sacrifice time to play on my switch/watch tv/write because reading takes first place. Also, GoodReads does count epilogues and webtoons as books so I do as well lol. Which is how I'm currently on the 131st book 😂 But sure! I love talking about books so I will list them under the read more!

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever thoughts...
So I watched WF today as a big fan of Ryan Coogler. I was a little apprehensive admittedly. I was worried that the film would feel a bit like a 160 minute therapy session for the cast and crew. But I had enough faith that Coogler would do good with this movie. I had overall enjoyed the first Black Panther, but I didn't love it as much as a lot of people did. I think it was a good movie with a terrific hero and a terrific villain. Coming out of Wakanda Forever, I overall felt satisfied but still slightly disappointed, which is a contradiction, I know. I think it is a decent movie. Certainly better than the latest Thor movie. But its middle tier Marvel. But its a creditable effort, given the loss that the Coogler and the team experienced with Chadwick's passing.
The good parts are the obvious ones. The film is quite well crafted. The costumes and music are wonderful. The film does a nice job with some of the under water scenes. The film is tonally fairly somber, which is a refreshing change of pace from Marvel recently. The acting is quite excellent across the board. Letitia Wright is the de factor lead and she handles that quite capably. Certainly in all her scenes of processing grief and loss are extremely well acted. She is not as convincing in scenes where she has to show anger and a thirst for vengeance, but its a very strong performance nonetheless. Obviously, due to where the character is at personally, the humorous part of the character is largely missing. Angela Bassett is a force of nature in the movie. She commands the screen in every moment she's in. Tenoch Huerta, playing Namor, is quite terrific in the film. While the character isn't quite as strong as Killmonger from the first film, he's still a strong antagonist. Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, and Winston Duke are all excellent in their returning roles. Dominique Thorne helps provide much of the humor, as Riri Williams. Martin Freeman and Julia Louis-Deyfus are just there in to be there so it feels like the MCU. Overall royally wasted. Michael B. Jordan makes a short but impressive appearance.
Asides from this, there are some narrative issues with the film. Everything with Ross and Fontaine feels completely unnecessary and out of place. Like with the first film, there are some dodgy CGI sequences. Also, and this may be a problem of the film itself or the theater where I saw it, but it was very difficult to see what was happening in some of the night and under water sequences. The film felt narratively a little too busy. I feel the backstory to Namor and Talokan felt rushed and half baked as a result. I didn't really understand his motivations behind going to war. In the end, The Talokans still murdered people who were innocent. So I am not sure the film makes a convincing argument of making us understand their side. I feel it could have been fleshed out. It also really didn't make much sense that Riri Williams was walking around as a normal college student after having made the technology to find Vibranium. The film is definitely 15-20 mins too long. I think there are characters and subplots that could have been cut and certainly there are sequences that go on for too long. For me, the biggest issue was that I ended up feeling emotionally cold after the film. For a film that was promoted as being about Wakanda dealing with the death T'Challa, his character's passing is a bit of an afterthought. In fact, there is a death in the film that ends up feeling a lot more relevant to the movie and Shuri overall. It was a bit surprising because I was worried it was going to be too much of that but I didn't feel as much of an emotional punch as I should have. In fact, the one scene I did find powerful was the mid credit scene. Also, as harsh as it is, there is a big missing space with Chadwick's departure that the film is not really able to fill.
All in all, still a good movie, but not necessarily a one that will stay with me. I think there is a lot of craft and care behind this movie and a cast that is giving it its all. Coogler has still made a solid movie, though its arguably his weakest in his filmography, which is a credit to him. Among MCU Phase 4 movies, I think this ranks in the middle. Above Black Widow, Eternals, and Thor: L&T, but below NWH, Shang-Chi, and DS2, which I know I like more than other people do. A 7.5/10

A Review of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)”
Tumblr media
I enjoyed the first Black Panther film and loved Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa. I was looking forward to seeing him more in the MCU which is why his passing was heartbreaking. The sequel then had a tough choice on whether to recast T'Challa or not. Marvel Studios decided to go down the route of not recasting him which I understand but was a little disappointed by. I love the character of T'Challa and having his journey in the MCU end so prematurely was slightly saddening. Did Ryan Coogler make the right choice, or was this an unfortunate misstep?
Tumblr media
I have to say that this is indeed one of the most emotional and mature Marvel films in a long time. The choice to have T'Challa killed off is handled with the utmost respect and care within the story. Shuri is the main central character and the emotional core is about her grief with her brother's death. The story does a phenomenal job of illustrating her emotional journey which is deep and compelling. We also get to see how other characters handle the passing such as Ramonda and their way of handling grief which is different from Shuri. I appreciated that as people do indeed handle grief differently. One issue with MCU movies lately is the overabundance of comedy. Thankfully, this movie does not do that and for the most part, is a very serious movie. The beginning and ending are wonderfully done as well and are not typical of Marvel.
Tumblr media
It is clear that Chadwick's passing affected the actors as their performance is stunning. Letitia Wright gives a vastly different performance as Shuri that shows the pain and anger of her loss. Danai Gurira also delivers a great performance as Okoye and Lupita Nyong'o as Nakia respectively. Winston Duke returns as M'Baku and is still more or less the funny character but there are some great moments of serious from him that I love. Tenoch Huerta Mejía is the antagonist Namor, King of the underwater country Talokan, and I think he does a great job. He is fearsome and royal but his performance is quite charming with some heart. The biggest performance standout comes from Angela Bassett as Ramonda. Her performance is phenomenal! I am not surprised she got the best supporting actress because it is that good.
Tumblr media
On that note, I really like that Talokan does not look like Atlantis from Aquaman (2019). The design is more traditional and inspired by Mesoamerican which is a great choice. Ludwig Göransson returns to compose the soundtrack and he just continues to do a brilliant job. There is a scene where it is about exploring Talokan which sticks in my mind because of the great design and the amazing music score. In terms of action scenes, there is a pretty enjoyable car chase near the beginning that I liked.
Tumblr media
However, that is the only action scene I enjoyed. One thing this film does not do as well is the action scenes. The first issue is that there aren't a lot of action scenes and the second is that every action scene after the car chase is not entertaining. The choreography is not as well done and the final fight is just dull. The final fight is also logically baffling tactically as it felt like an incredibly silly and dumb plan. The movie just lacked a lot of triumphant moments that would make you cheer. It doesn't help that this movie is an incredibly slow burner with it taking a while for things to happen. The movie is really long at 160 minutes as well and it didn't even need to be. The movie could cut 20 minutes of its runtime and most of the core story stays the same.
Tumblr media
In terms of story, they try to incorporate the idea of other countries going for Vibranium ever since T'Challa opened Wakanda to the world. I don't think they do a good job at this as it felt distracting from the main conflict. Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) returns from the first film and Valentina (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) returns from other Marvel projects. However, their incorporation into the plot is forced and doesn't add to the main narrative. One issue I have with Phase 4 of MCU is this running theme of kids being hunted down by bad guys. It happened in Doctor Strange 2 and Hawkeye but also here in Wakanda forever with Riri Williams being hunted by Namor. It's it flame as it feels like it was done to give Riri a TV series rather than being an integral character plot-wise. I also don't think the film does a good job of showing how Talokan is a huge threat. Their tech feels minimal compared to Wakanda so it is hard to believe that Wakanda would struggle against them.
Tumblr media
Overall, Ryan Coogler handled this wonderfully. He treated the passing of Chadwick with the utmost respect, and I got to admire that. I don't think this movie is as good as the first one but it is definitely one of the more emotional ones. I'm not sure what direction Black Panther can go in now but whatever it is, I hope it retains the mature take of Wakanda Forever.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
[ 4 stars]
Let’s start with the important bits. Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole found a great story and better balance than the original flick in their sequel to Black Panther. And Coogler also paced it and walked the minefield of the loss of Chadwick Boseman with respect and genuine love. It is a rollicking adventure that is propped up by real emotions and unapologetic political statements. The end result is, frankly, a better movie than the first. To be fair, however, the story wouldn’t work as a stand-alone either.
There is no denying the heart at the center of this sequel. From the moment it starts, it takes on the elephant in the room (or the jungle) and sets the framing that will pay off in the final moments. But this is a much bigger story than just the fate of T’Challa. It is also a sprawling commentary on colonization and politics.
More notably, while the first movie had strong female characters, this story is almost all female led. Letitia Wright (Death on the Nile), Lupita Nyong’o (Little Monsters), Danai Gurira (Black Panther), and the powerful Angela Bassett (Wendell & Wild) form the core. In nice supporting roles Michaela Coel (Black Earth Rising) and Dominique Thorne (Judas and the Black Messiah) have some fun and impact as well. Thorne could have been better used and resolved in this story, but she definitely gets her moments nonetheless.
Only Martin Freeman (Nightwatching / Rembrandt’s J’accuse) and Tenoch Huerta (Bel Canto) really register on the testosterone side…with all apologies to Richard Schiff’s (Made in Dagenham) throw away role backing up Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Onward).
But here’s the really bad admission. As much fun as I had…as cathartic and touching as the emotional throughlines were…I had to keep telling myself not to think too much about the facts of this movie. Because, I’m sorry, they’re absurd on many levels. Whether it’s the loose rules in how the underwater living and plants work or the absurd little wings that defy physics in every sense to help Huerta get around I kept getting assaulted by intellectually challenged plotting. There are more issues.. tons of them, but if you can turn off your brain and just go with it, the emotional ride is solid. I don’t often give a movie a pass on that level, but in this case I will because they got the rest right.
I do also think the ending went one bit too far, though I do understand why they felt they needed to for the sake of the franchise. But it felt cheap to me. And not a little forced. But without it, they were stuck with a problem. So, all those caveats aside, the fact is it is still a great and fun movie. It’s just never going to have my respect, only my giddy enjoyment…and that isn’t a little thing either.

Angela Bassett Shares Reaction to Queen Ramonda's Fate
Tumblr media
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is one of the most talked about films of 2022. Following the phenomenal success of Black Panther (2018), expectations were been sky-high, especially with the passing of lead actor, Chadwick Boseman. Angela Bassett stars in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and learns her character's fate while reading the script. Director Ryan Coogler addresses her concerns by explaining to her that "Death is not the end" in these films. I got a chance to speak with Angela as part of the African American Film Critics Association roundtable series. In this interview I asked Anglea about her motive for not wanting that fate for her character and what she was fighting for: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8leB68G78s&list=PLsD5qP1WqKt5AfUbgA-dOKiPXZtGLZO8Y&index=1 Q: This movie is heavy, at least to me. The King T'Challa dies off-screen at the beginning of the movie and your character doesn't survive this movie either. And I heard you didn't initially want your character to die in this film. Eventually Ryan spoke with you and convinced you that "Death is not the end" in Marvel films.  Now I know why I didn't want that fate for your character, I'm still mourning the passing of my own mother, but can you talk about the message of acceptance and how you processed your character's passing in this film? Was this something that weighed on you? A: I think... Let's see... I had just fallen, like I think, like a lot of the audience who has a friend, a dear friend, who has expressed they haven't seen the movie... Because I love the franchise, and the movie, I'm in love with the world and the opportunity. Of course, when I read this I was just literally shocked. I was heartbroken also! I just fell in love with this woman and her children and her people... Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is a 2022 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Black Panther. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the sequel to Black Panther (2018) and the 30th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Directed by Ryan Coogler, who co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Robert Cole, the film stars Letitia Wright as Shuri / Black Panther, alongside Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Florence Kasumba, Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Martin Freeman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Angela Bassett. In the film, the leaders of Wakanda fight to protect their nation in the wake of King T'Challa's death. Read the full article

Black Panter: Wakanda Forever
Director: Ryan Coogler
Starring: Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Dominique Thorne, Tenoch Huerta, Martin Freeman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Angela Bassett
Release Date: November 11, 2022
My Rating: 9/10 (I still think it could’ve packed a little bit more of a punch, but it was still very satisfying)
My Review (no spoilers):
I saw it 3 times in 5 days. The second time I saw it, I went in *needing* to see it again because I wasn’t super impressed by it my first time around. I think that’s because I built it up so much in my head over the past 4 and a half years...I was able to recognize that I’d probably like it a bit better the second time. And I did. In fact, I downright loved it the second time around.
The story is solid. The acting is phenomenal. The new world that is introdcued with Talokan and Namor is breathtaking. I actually really like how the antogist and protagonist ended up...but I was hoping for Namor to be more of a badass villain. He was a fantastic antihero/antagonist to watch though, and all of the action sequences with Namor and Talokan were so beautiful.
I really liked how this movie focused on pitting Wakanda against someone as powerful (if not more) as them. It wasn’t infighting like the last movie. There was still that element of grief and emotional turmoil and growing as a person. I think I cried four times during the movie and once on the drive home - that’s the most emotional I’ve ever gotten over a Marvel movie. And I really liked how the antagonists weren’t the villains, not really. The end scene where the protagonist has to make the huge decision was a little cheesy but also really highlighted the big theme of the movie - that the two different groups of people really aren’t that different.
I’m really excited to see this movie for a fourth time, and to see how all of the characters continue to flourish in the MCU.

Womansnight
It's time for another womans night, at the Freeman's. All woman are there, except for Alice Nelson. (and accidently Belle Rogers came too, just ignore her, she wasn't there)
Tumblr media
Nina Reagan: Hmm, that chocolade pie looks so good!
Sienna Barrow: It really is that good, Samantha did another good job baking.
Jade Clarkson: She sure did, this winter pie is also very good.
Nina: I just don't want to get on any more wait. I'm already huge!
Sienna: That's just the baby, it's a good excuse to eat a little piece of pie.
Jade: Yes, Nina, enjoy the moment
Nina: Have you two heard anything about Leah and Belle?
Sienna: No
Jade: But the Landgraab's, Nancy&Geoffrey are searching for them. So I hope that we will hear something from them soon.
Nina: So sweet of them to do that. I will pray for their search.
Tumblr media
Gaby Villareal: How are you feeling, Eliza?
Eliza Pancakes: Fat! Haha, being pregnant with your sixth baby doesn't make you any slimmer.
Lydia Barrow: haha, It's not different with your first or second, Eliza.
Eliza: Bob, keeps nagging that I get to much pregnancy weight on.
Gaby: Really?
Eliza: yeah, but I don't listen. He is fat himself.
Lydia: Does he work out at all?
Eliza: No! And then he expects me to stay slim while having baby after baby. No, sir, that's not going to happen. I'm buzy enough with five childeren while pregnant.
Lydia: I get that. Have you any news to share Gaby? How long have you guys been married now?
Gaby: We have been married for a year and a half.
Eliza: And still no positive stick?
Gaby: No
Lydia: I'm sorry. Must be hard to see us pregnant with childeren.
Gaby: It's alright
Tumblr media
Nina: How are you doing Dakota? Still holding up?
Dakota Rogers: I'm still good. Thanks. I'm learning to live without knowing where my daughter is.
Nina: That must be hard. I can't think about not knowing where my Julia would be.
Dakota: Oh, that little Julia. She is such an angel. The sweetest girl I have ever met.
Nina: Oh, absolutly. I love spending my days with her. I hope she will love having a sibling soon.
Dakota: She might have to get use to sharing but it's better for childeren to learn to share from a young age. She will be fine, I'm sure.
Nina: I just hope so. It will be difficult to manage two childeren.
Dakota: Well, I have five still at home. Once I had seven at home. You will be fine, Nina.
