Day 7 of Kinkmas: Sleeping In The Lot With Sodapop Curtis
KINKMAS 🎄🧤❄️
Pairing: Sodapop Curtis x fem!reader
Warning: making out, hickeys, protected sex, public sex
Tumblr media
Y/N’s POV
Sodapop and I are going to the drive-in to see Beach Blanket Bingo tonight, we’ve been wanting to go somewhere alone for quite sometime because of him working including me going to school.
When Soda and I got to the drive-in, I can see some socs and their Mustangs and Corvairs, as usual. When Soda and I parked we went to the concession stand to get some food and snacks. When we got there, I see Bob and Randy, looking smug as ever.
“Just ignore them.” I whisper into Soda’s ear.
“I will Y/N/N.” He whispers back.
We get our food and drinks and we walked out like there was no one in the room. We get back to the car and get in the trunk of Soda’s truck and we get comfortable, ate our food, I cuddle up with Soda and enjoy the movie.
After the movie, Soda decided to take us to the lot to be somewhere quieter. I cuddled up with Soda again and look up to the stars to see any shapes in the sky.
“Did you like the movie?” Soda says looking at me.
“Yeah I did, I really loved the dancing and the fashion in the movie.” I say looking at him.
“I only liked the dancing.” He jokingly says.
“Come on, what else did you like?” I asked him.
“Fine, I liked the dancing and the sets of the movie.” He says trying to think.
“I like that better.” I smile.
Soda looks at me and kisses me, I kiss back. We look at each other and I make him get on top of me. We begin to make out, we haven’t done this in a while now but I’m glad we’re doing this.
Soda begins to touch my body, I moan, but I try to keep my moaning quiet because there’s neighbors everywhere. I feel him giving me love bites, I gasp. I get on top of him and gave him some hickeys as well.
“This is new to me Y/N/N.” Soda whispers in my ear.
“Just want to give my baby what he wants.” I whisper back.
“I like the sound of that.” He smirks.
I giggle and continue to kiss his neck. He wraps his arms around me and continues to touch me which makes me to giggle. Soda makes me lay down on the ripped up car seat and grabs a condom.
“You wanna do this?” He says to me.
“We’ll just be quiet.” I sit up and whispers in his ear.
We begin take our clothes off, Soda gets the condom on him and begins to fuck me slowly, I cover my mouth so I can be quiet. I gasp a little, he really is so good at this.
I flip us over so I can be on top, I begin to ride him. He grabs on my hips and guides me, I already can tell I’m going to be sore tomorrow. I sway my hips to make him feel deeper inside me, he covers his mouth and groans. I giggle at him. I make him sit up so he’s looking at me and he looks at my breasts.
“I don’t mind if you do anything to em’.” I say to him.
He grins and starts to do something to the valley of my breasts, I tug on his hair, I feel him sucking my nipples, which makes me arch my back and lean my head back by the pleasure of him now giving me more hickeys. My parents are going to kill me, I hope we have children one day.
After him being a sex crave addict, we lay on the car seat. I feel his heart beating and he touches my hair.
“I hope we can do this somewhere more private Soda.” I say looking up at him.
“So we can be louder?” He grins.
“Maybe.” I giggle.
We look at the stars again, they different than the last time I saw them.
“I promise I’ll make daddy fuck me harder.” I whisper.
“Let’s just go to an abandoned warehouse and, daddy will make you beg.” I says in a deep voice.
“What if mommy wants to take control?” I pout.
He winks at me, he knows I’ll take control and make him feel good like he does with me.

prolly never gunna finish lol!
The Outsiders (Johnny's perspective)
I am Johnny Cade, a 16 year old greaser. I live in Tulsa Oklahoma, and I have my entire life, I have 2 parents, a mom and a dad. Sometimes I wish I didn't have either and then maybe I could be at peace, I could probably live with my pals, too. Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Darry would probably take me in, or Two-Bit if they could. My friends understand the situation at my house, they've saved me from my folks a handful of times. Two-Bit especially, sometimes I feel like I’d be better off dead, my parents sure would like that.. They probably wouldn’t notice for a while anyway since I haven't been going home as often anymore, and when I do.. They either ignore me or beat on me. I usually sleep at the Curtis house, or I stay with Two-Bit from time to time, when I can’t stay with Two or Pony, I sleep in the lot. I’m sure I would have a place with Dally if he didn’t stay at Bucks all the time. He doesn't have the best relationship with his parents either. His dad couldn’t care less about his whereabouts, and state. And we never hear about his mother, or any relatives that he may be able to stay with. He digs okay, so does the rest of my gang. They’re the closest relationships I’ve had to family. I'm smaller, and younger compared to all of them, well.. Except for ponyboy, at least for the age part. Ponyboy is 14 and he has already lost both of his parents in a car accident. I feel absolutely terrible for their entire family, especially Darry.. He’s only 20 and he has to continue raising his 2 kid brothers, he doesn’t usually have issues with Sodapop, but him and Ponyboy have never really gotten along, which got worse after their parents died. It was rough on the rest of the gang too. Mr. and Mrs. Curtis were great people, and they took care of those who didn't have great relationships with their parents.. Me and Dally especially- Dally and Mrs. Curtis were real close, I’m sure their passing was also very hard on him.. Of course, he would NEVER let anyone know that, especially anyone in the gang. He thinks emotions and stuff like that are wastes of time, and he had never done so much as cry in front of any of us. Of course we had seen him angry, he hates the world and almost everything in it. He doesn't seem to hate me though, I’ve never been to sure as to why.. But I love Dally a lot, I love the entire gang a lot. They’re all I’ve got in life, without the gang I have nothing, I AM nothing. I would probably be dead and gone if it weren't for them. Or I’d be in a different state, trying to start a new life, without my parents being there to bug me and hurt me. Maybe there wouldn’t be any “Greasers” or “Socs” there too.. Just people. Normal, plain old people.. Maybe I’d be able to go to church there too.. Me and Ponyboy used to go all the time, we invited Two-Bit, and the rest of the gang once, they caused a pretty dramatic scene.. So we never went again. Ponyboy always talks about living in the country, pretty far 'away from the city.. I don’t think I’d mind the “country life” too much, I’d just need to get used to it for a bit, especially since I’ve never been outside of our neighborhood. Maybe there I’d be considered less stupid. That’s all I’ve ever been called by teachers and my parents. I dunno, maybe I am stupid.. I can really get excited about learning if it’s something I find interesting. Ponyboy has mentioned a book before Gone with the Wind. Maybe in the country Ponyboy would be able to read it to me or something. Ponyboy likes books a lot,

The crows as cards cause I’m bored and why not, as usual my asks are open and I’m always happy to answer!!! Possible ROW and CK spoilers??? Obviously SOC spoilers
Kaz: king of clubs, symbolises strength, power and determination, his ambition towards taking down Rollins, and his effectiveness in doing so, as well as his power by the time ROW occurs in him having two people on the merchant council, the queen of fjerda and the wraith on the seas, in play can be useful, but in most cases doesn’t do much if the rest of the hand is shit, he needs his crows
Inej: Queen of spades, I was going to make her and Kaz match but I’d rather give her an individual one, symbolises intelligence, practical and intellectual, plans ahead of time, inej is always the one in the crows to provide insight to their issues, no matter how cryptic it may be at times, and she shows her ability to understand the consequences of all of their actions better than the other crows several times, in play a black queen can change the game if not countered by a red one
Nina: queen of hearts, pretty obvious as it is, heartrender, queen of fjerda, symbolises a powerful woman who is commanding and has a strong presence yet is compassionate, caring and protective of those she loves, her taking the parem to save the others in coming out of the ice court, as well as generally just being there for the crows in their times of need while still being a very independent and strong female character, in play can be incredibly useful for saving a hand
Matthias: king of hearts, symbolises honesty and spirituality, obviously spirituality to djel and his honesty about changing who he was to be a better man, and admitting that what he did was wrong along with coming to terms with how he was raised and how that effected him and how he treats others, also symbolises a kind gentle man, which he became because of Nina, sparing the boy who shot him, in play again not very useful unless the rest of the hand is good
Wylan: Ace of diamonds, symbolises a financial increase and can indicate a message from a new lover, his claiming of his inheritance from his father, and Jespers role in helping him achieve and maintain that inheritance with reading to him, in play can change the stakes of the game and is very fluid compared to other cards in what it can do, as well as changing the suit to how it sees fit regardless of the suit being played, changing to look like kuwei, asking to be beaten up further for dramatic effect etc
Jesper: Jack of Diamonds, symbolises youth, energy and potential, “maybe he was a bullet in a chamber, waiting to be given direction”, it can also symbolise future financial instability, his gambling, and can be used to represent an unfaithful employee, when he accidentally ratted them out to the dime lions, in play isn’t extremely helpful and generally can benefit the person before the player more than the player themselves, heavily depends on the other cards in the hand, much like how Jesper often puts trying not to disappoint others above his own general well-being and mental health
+ Bonus kuwei: ace of spades, mirrors Wylan, symbolises death, darkness and mystery, parem causing death, hiding in the tomb, nobody really knowing much about him, but can also represent new beginnings, fresh starts and rebirth, moving to Ravka and changing his name to fix his fathers mistakes, arguably one of the most important cards in play, can change the game entirely based on its high place on the list of outcomes on rolling the dice or drawing from a deck of cards chance, can also symbolise power, luck and triumph, whoever was ‘in possession’ of kuwei was winning the game
If anybody has any other opinions on this please let me know!! Also I am aware that technically they have all already been assigned cards in the collectors edition art for crooked kingdom but these are my own takes, might do an analysis post on their cards assigned in the official art if anybody is interested <333 also will do any other characters in the SOC duology and maybe some from the SAB trilogy if asked!!!

“He’s my home”
Dallas Winston x Curtis! Reader
Tumblr media
This ended up kinda long. Super fluffy! Dallas. Hope you enjoy! <33
The sun shone through the yellow stained curtains in my room waking me up, along with my brother, Darry.
“Y/n! You and Soda oughta leave in a few, your late already! ”
“I’m up Darry just gimme one sec” I yelled back.
I stumbled out of bed, managing to step on everything sharp on my messy floor.
Shit!
I’m already 5 minutes late.
Somehow I managed to get dressed and make my way to work. Staring out at the glass door of the store connected to the DX, I see a few socs head towards me. I sigh as a I hear the bell ring, signifying their entrance.
“Hey Grease.” The blonde one, Bob, spit. I could smell the disgust coming from his throat. The other three, of which I did not care enough to know their names, stared down on me, attempting to scare me.
“What do you want Bob” I spit back. I wasn’t going to allow the guy that my best friend almost killed to scare me like this. I checked my pocket for my blade, feeling an empty imprint. I must’ve left it somewhere. I couldn’t lose it, Dallas gave me that.
Me and Dallas had always been close. I was the one to initially become friends with him, then introducing him to the gang. My late Mother always loved him, my dad saw him as another son. At first I didn’t know what they saw in him, he was just another hood right? How I was wrong. I started to see the soft, heartfelt side that most didn’t see. He was just a kid after all. Like most cold, hard people he had a past that made him that way. It wasn’t his fault, he just needed someone to talk to.
After my parents died, it felt like he was the only one who could understand how I wanted to be treated. I didn’t want the sympathy and sad looks, I just wanted to talk to someone about it. He understood me, he understood my wants and needs, and my hates. He understood my anger towards the world yet my empathy to those who had it harder than me. I understood his coldness and his hatred of those better off than him, but I also understood his want for someone who cared.
Through this time we became closer, but I started to want more. I haven’t told him, I don’t think I ever will. But, it’s been making me avoid him. I feel bad. But I can’t stand being around him feeling like I am lying about how I feel about him.
“Leave her alone assholes” a disembodied voice said. I looked towards the door, seeing Dallas standing there against the wall, smoking a weed. Fuck, he looked hot. We made eye contact, and he smirked.
The Socs knew about me and Dallas, so they left quickly.
“Next time you won’t get off that easy, doll.” Dallas walked over and looked down at me.
“Yeah, yeah I know. I’m just sick of it, ya dig?” I looked back into his brown eyes.
He seemed out of it for a sec, then snapped back into it, “I dig ya. Look, I’m gonna split and hang out with John, but if you want to meet me at Bucks tonight we can have a few drinks.” He looked away and put out his cigarette with his boot heel.
“You askin me on a date Winston?” I joked.
“Sure, If you want it to be. I’ll see you there.” He smirked seeing my blush after his comment, and sauntered out of the DX. After hearing the Bell ring, I sprinted to Soda, the only one who knew about Dallas.
“Soda holy fucking shit. Did you tell Dallas anything?” He rolled out from under the car he was working on, with a worried yet excited look on his face.
“Don’t get mad at me okay, but I might’ve said something.” I gave him a look. “I know you said not to tell anybody but it’s so obvious you two are supposed to be together how could I not tell him?”
“Soda I’m embarrassed though! I- god im just kinda pissed at you.”
“You won’t be tonight” he winked and smirked.
I hit his shoulder, “OKAY! We are no longer having this conversation!” He laughed and went back under the car, leaving me to my own swimming thoughts.
Finally the work day was over, allowing me to make my way to Bucks.
The red lights infected my vision, as I stepped up to the door, knocking 3 times, stopping on the 4th when the door was swung open by none other than Buck. He looked worse than normal, having scruff running down his neck, with dark circles and tired eyes, he looked as though he’s been staying up for 5 nights straight.
“Hey Curtis. You here for ole Dal?” He said.
“Yeah. You okay man? You look a little, how do I say this? Like you got run over by a truck.”
“Don’t get wise kid, Dal has been keeping me up for a few nights, wanting to talk about shit. It’s cool” He winked at me.
“Okay whatever, I’ll see you later Buck.” I looked at him as I started up the stairs. Luckily there was no party tonight.
“See you tomorrow!” He chuckled as I made my way to Dal’s door.
It seems like everyone is in on something but me.
I walked in and Dallas was sitting on his rusty bed, playing with my switch. He looked up at me in the door way, and sat up on the edge of his bed.
“You forgot your switch last week” he stated.
“Ya, im sorry I know I should have it on me.” I rubbed the back of my neck.
“I just get worried. The socs seem to not care if your a girl anymore. I want you to be safe.” He said, still looking at the ground.
“I said I’m sorry Dal, now what’s wrong? I thought we were gonna get drinks?” I sat next to him, and the bed creaked as my weight sunk onto his shitty mattress
“Look Soda told me something the other day, and just, I want to know if he was being serious.” He looked away. He still hasn’t made eye contact with with at all. Did I do something wrong?
“Well what did he say”
“He said that you might feel more for me than what your letting on. And I know you’ve been avoiding me and shit, is this why?” Finally he made eye contact with me. He had a completely stone cold face on, not letting me know anything about his opinion on the topic.
“I didnt really want to tell you like this, but I guess yeah. I’m sorry, look I’ll- I’ll just leave okay? Bye.”
I started to stand up from his bed but he grabbed my wrist and guided me back down to his bed.
He looked in to my eyes, and in his I saw his conflicting feelings. He let the angel on his shoulder take over, and leaned in slowly to me. His hands found its way to my cheek and waist, pulling me closer to him. I had never felt anything this real and electrifying in my life. I put my left hand on his neck, and other touching his hand on my waist. He was cold, he always had cold hands, and bucks was always freezing. Yet, I was was completely hot.
“Is this okay?” He whispered, and I felt his hot breath on my lips. He smelled like firewood and Italian leather.
I nodded. He leaned closer and I felt his lips sink softly against mine. I closed my eyes and just let myself sink into this moment, along with my lips into his. His lips were soft, and plump. And damn, was he a good kisser.
He pulled away, but kept his hand on my waist, having his other hand travel to hold my hand.
I couldn’t help the smile escape from my lips, seeing his hold a genuine wide smile. I giggled and then looked away, but moved in to melt my body against his. He was warm now, unlike before the kiss.
“Dallas?” I looked up at him.
“Yeah sweetheart?” He looked down at me too.
“What does this mean?” I looked into his eyes.
His eyes searched mine for a second, and then they found what they were looking for.
“It means your my girl and I’m your guy. If you want, I mean-“ I cut him off
“I like that” I smiled at him, and started to lean in again.
Our lips once again met, but had less delicacy to them. More love, more haphazard likeness for the other. This was longer, and more passionate. I pulled away from him this time, “I’m happy I can do this now” I stated.
“Me too doll, me too. Look don’t take this the wrong way but do you wanna stay the night? It’s already late and I don’t want Darry to yell at ya.”
I laughed, “yeah, Dallas I’ll stay the night.”
He let a ghost of a true smile land on his lips, “okay good because I already told Buck you would.” I smirked at him.
Soon enough I was changed into one of Dallas’ shirts, and we were laying in his bed just talking. My head was on his bare chest, with my hand holding his. His other hand was massaging my hip and thigh, with tender and loving touch.
“Dallas.” He looked down at me, “how long did you know?”
“Soda told me a few days ago. He was the one to actually convince me to tell you aswell. Buck was kinda a part of it, I feel bad for the guy I’ve been up the past few nights talking to him about it”
“ahh, so that explains why buck looks shit” I laughed slightly.
He smiled, “yeah. Man, I didn’t even keep him up that long. He needs a fucking sleep schedule like a baby.”
He kept talking to me about something, but I was falling asleep. As my eyes shuttered closed, and I started to falling into the land of dreams, I heard Dallas whisper,
“I really think I love you darling”
“I’m in love with you too Dallas Tucker Winston”
The next morning, we woke up, went downstairs and of course Buck had to say “I told you so Curits!” As we left.
Dallas pulled up to my house, and walked in the front door with me. I stopped in front of the door.
“What if he’s pissed Dallas? Darry is so going to yell at me.”
He looked down at me, and kissed my forehead.
“Everything will be okay love.”
I walked in, and the gang all took a second glance and me and Dallas’ connected hands. They knew this was coming.
I walked into the kitchen, and Darry stood there, clearly disappointed but not to the yelling point.
“Y/n do even need to ask why you didn’t tell me you weren’t at home last night. Your never home anyways, always with Dallas. I understand your close with him but your never here!” He looked at me and Dallas’ hands, and something registered in his head.
Before Darry could say anything, I stepped in, “But Darry, Dad and Mom always told us that home is sometimes people. I love Dallas. He’s my home. You and Soda and Pony will always be my home, but I have another. I love you so much. And I’m sorry, but sometimes I get a little homesick all right?”
Darry looked at me once again, than at Dallas.
“Look Dallas, Mom and Dad always wanted you to stay here anyways, so why don’t you. So she can be with her home.” As he said home he quoted it.
I rolled my eyes, but couldn’t help but smile so wide and look at Dallas, I’ve always wanted to find him a better place than Bucks.
“You’ll take pony’s room, he’s basically sharing with Soda anyway. Just treat my baby sister right and we won’t have a problem, will we Winston?”
“Nah man” Dallas was still looking back at me, and I know he always will be.

No place to go - J.C. x reader
Warning(s) - slight language
A/N: Let me know if you want a part 2 for this one
✨✨✨
You know how they say “when you hit rock bottom, there’s no place to go but up”? Well, apparently if you try hard enough, you can go deeper. At least, that’s how my life is going as of late.
I had gotten fired from my job today. Apparently, defending yourself from harassment counts as “customer mistreatment”. Whatever, it was a dead-end job at a shitty diner anyways. Good riddance, I say.
However, my father did not share the same sentiment. As the only functioning member of the family that’s not a raging alcoholic, I was the main breadwinner of the two of us. Meaning when my checks got cut off, so did our livelihood. And God forbid my father actually gets up off of his drunk ass to work himself. No, I had to provide, or get out. Which led to my current predicament.
With my important belongings in my backpack, including about $150 I had saved from my paychecks over several years, I found myself walking to the Curtis household in the pouring rain. Initially, I was sleeping in the lot, perfectly fine until Heaven’s floodgates decided to unleash itself upon me. Woken up abruptly, I knew I had been asleep for a while, meaning it was most likely nearing dawn. I didn’t want to be caught in this downpour any longer than I had to, so I started to make my way towards the one place that I knew would always be open at an hour like this - the Curtis’.
Being neighbors with Johnny, I started going over to their house with him when his parents got into it. It gave me an opportunity not to be near my father longer than I had to and was an ear for him to complain to when he needed it. We kept each other company that way.
Trudging up the front steps, I opened the, thankfully unlocked, door. I moved as quietly as possible, not wanting to disturb any of the brothers. I know I will get questioned as to why I’m here when morning rolls around, but I’d rather not go through that earlier than I have to. Shedding my now-soaked jacket and shoes, I tip-toed over to the couch. I was just about to flop down on it when I saw a shape in the dark. Someone else had already claimed the couch for the night.
“Damn,” I cursed under my breath. I was really counting on this tonight. Oh well, I can sleep on the floor next to the radiator. That’ll keep me warm. Just as I was turning around to find the softest piece of floor, a voice spoke up.
“Y/N?” It was Johnny. “What’re you doin’ here?” He asked sleepily. He must’ve not gone back to his folk’s house when everyone else left for the night.
“Oh, you know. Old man kicked me out. Said not to come back this time,” I shrugged. Johnny hummed, processing what I said. “Sorry I woke you Johnny-cakes, I’m just gonna go sleep on the floor.”
“Wait,” he whispered, “you don’t have to sleep on the floor. Stay with me.” I froze.
Sleep on the couch? With Johnny? Internally, I’m panicking. I’ve been repressing feelings for him for months. Ever since he defended me against a group of cat-calling Socs at the drive-in.
~
Johnny, Pony, and me went to the movies to catch a double-feature. In between the films, Johnny and I went to the concessions stand for sodas and popcorn. While waiting in line, the same group of Soc boys walked past us twice before stopping to holler at me. I had been wearing a new skirt that night, one that I felt particularly pretty in. Guess those boys thought so too, cause they made sure to tell me in their own, misogynistic, pig-like way. Johnny wrapped his arm around my waist to pull me behind him before telling the boys to screw off and that they didn’t want any trouble tonight. He made sure to mention that the whole gang was here tonight for the movie, despite our only backup being Pony.
If you didn’t know Johnny very well, you would just see a tuff greaser protecting his friend, but I knew better. From his arm on me I could feel him shaking, and I could see how pale his face got from the interaction. Despite his fear of the Socs he still stood up for me - even though it terrified him.
When we finally got back to our seats, he had mostly calmed down. However, Pony - ever the observant - noticed something was off.
“Hey Johnny, you alright?” He asked, concerned. Johnny cleared his throat before speaking.
“I’m fine, jus’ had to take care of my girl.” My heart skipped a beat when he said that. His girl. I like that. Sure, he meant it in a friendly way, but what if he didn’t? I think I wouldn’t mind if he meant it in a different way. I was still lost in my thoughts when the movie started up and he put his arm around my shoulders. I shivered at the contact.
“You alright?” He whispered to me, mouth so close to my ear I could feel his breath. Another shiver went through my body.
“Yeah, jus’ a little cold.” I was definitely not. If anything, it was suddenly hot. He removed his arm for a second to take his jacket off and drape it around my shoulders. Then he replaced his arm and pulled me closer.
I think that’s when I fully fell in love with him.
~
Sharing a small couch with him is both a dream-come-true and a nightmare.
“Are you sure? I don’t think there’s room for me.” I tried to reason. Johnny’s hand reached out blindly, grabbing onto my arm before gently pulling me down to lie next to him. I was basically laying on top of him, no way around it besides being rude and straight-up leaving.
“There will always be room for you, Y/N,” he whispered, sleepily. “Always room for my girl. Goodnight darlin’.” His girl. That’s the second time I have heard him say that.
“Goodnight… Johnny.” I whispered back before stilling in shock; his lips found my forehead in a soft kiss, a physical affection he’d never shown me before. Pulling me closer, his breathing evened out, falling back asleep quickly. I allowed myself to relax, uncomfortable in the current situation, yet somehow more content than ever. There are definitely feelings I need to sort through, but that can wait until the morning, I’m too tired to think anymore. For now, I’m just going to sleep. In Johnny’s arms.
I guess they were right, there is no place to go but up.

Wylan just cares for his safety, and doesn’t hesitate to prove it to him.~
kintsugi (but were they ever really broken?) by fyrnacular

~Wylan hated the idea of soulmarks. Jesper loved them.

Two Weeks of Tutoring by Feriku
~Wylan Van Eck signs up as a math tutor for a simple reason: to escape his oppressive home for an extra hour each day. Anything is better than staying there, even dealing with unrequited feelings for a student who hates him.
Jesper Fahey, who would rather have a good time than study, sees no need for a tutor--especially not a rich brat who panics at the slightest hint of flirtation.
But when Jesper reluctantly agrees to endure two weeks of tutoring, neither of them is prepared for how it will change their lives.~
The Face Behind the Phone by Feriku
~When Wylan Van Eck moves ahead to take math and science classes with the grade above him, he immediately catches Jesper's eye. Or: Wylan and touch starvation.
bang bang by Anonymous
~He watches, confused, struck dumb, as Anika step up close to Wylan. Cutting him off and making him stop. She steps closer, really close, and pulls out her pistol, which is strange. Why would she do that, he thinks? Baffling. Except she does, and just swings her hand up to his forehead and then - ~

If Wylan only could read his soulmark, he would know if they were destined to grow old together or not.~
What is in a name? by lottielots11
~Basically, just a re-write of the scene in SOC when we first meet Wylan and discover his parentage. Wylan realising he was going to have to come into fairly close contact with his father again and how he might feel about that.~

more like you by sunshineriptiee
~Jesper was… confused watching this play out. When they had first all been in the same room, Wylan had seemed terrified of Helvar. Which made sense, he was an intimidating guy! But now, there was an ease in the way Wylan would turn to him, double checking he didn’t get anything wrong when explaining. If Jesper didn’t mistake it, Helvar even smiled.~

~Wylan couldn’t breathe. The walls were closing in, and the room was unbearably hot, and he couldn’t breathe. Set immediately after Kaz tells the Crows about the Ice Court Heist~
it was a gunshot, it was prairie fire by garlic09

Not the Plan by bluecacti
~An alternate take on the auction scene, in which Van Eck didn't leave Wylan alone with Anika and Keeg, and instead brought him to the auction himself. Jesper won't leave until he figures out if Wylan is okay, and Van Eck makes his hatred for his son abundantly clear to the entire church.~
Holding on to heartache (wear it like a crown) by exhiled_spirit
~Jesper finds out about Wylan's real identity. Ft. show!wesper~
we were shotgun lovers // I’m a shotgun running away by sunshineriptiee
~Vaguely he was aware of the other three in the room and the way Kaz had just kept on talking like he hadn’t just turned Wylans life upside down. Matthias, Ninas fjerdan, was mentioned, and that caused a stir as well. But Wylan could only focus on the feeling of being watched, of what he was sure was Jespers gaze flicking back and forth to him.~
the handmaid by MaudeAlise
~It’s a relatively straightforward job: Jesper will pretend to be the handmaid to the withdrawn and sheltered Van Eck heir, and convince him to elope with another mercher. That’s all Jesper has to do on his end, and then the Crows will walk away with 45 million kruge. It’s a simple task.~
the mathematics of a beautiful boy by shootingcomet
~Jesper really doesn't like relying on others for help, but a C in maths ensures that he has to spend every Thursday lunchtime until the end of the year inside a stuffy classroom with a maths tutor. It certainly doesn't help that said maths tutor is quite possibly the most beautiful boy he's ever seen.~
A Fateful Boat Ride by Feriku
~Whatever Kaz wanted with Wylan Van Eck was anyone's guess, but Jesper's role in the plan was simple enough. All he had to do was kidnap him on the way to Belendt.~

~Wylan often worries about having to prove himself as a Crow. So when he gets injured, he doesn't tell the crows until the job is done.~
teach me how to love by littlelous
~Wylan struggles with new revelations about his father and stumbles across a group of five people he should most definitely not be associating with. But who's left to tell him off? His father? Wylan's beginning to think he never even cared anyways.~
I will always love you (even if you're a worm) by crawlingupawall
~Jesper knows that the danger of the Barrel can cause people to develop certain reflexes, but Wylan's flinching seems… different.~
In The Stillness of Remembering by Essidera
~Wylan's past followed him around like a shadow, and it was inevitable that one day it would catch up to him. He gets jumped one night on his way back to the Crow Club. Kaz has some thoughts to share about that, and Jesper just wanted to sleep.~
When has submission ever felt like freedom? by AmoureusedeRimbaud

Vreenak/OC
No warnings. SFW
Summary: Vreenak has been away on a diplomatic mission for almost a month. Once he returns home, he shares a tender reunion with his wife, Eve. A tiny Keep Your Enemies Closer sequel; takes place before the events of Rekkhai.
This little piece was supposed to be my third (and way overdue) installment for SoC, but it was too sweet to make spicy.
Tag list: @starrynightgardens @deepspacedukat @horta-in-charge @emilie786 @indignantlemur @darkmattervibes @wafflingchemist
If you want on this list, let me know!

Vreenak dropped his bags at the door and went in search of his wife. He had a good idea of where he’d find her, most likely babying her plants in the greenhouse he’d built for her, and was pleased when he saw her blurry silhouette through the dewy glass panes.
The sight of her made the senator stop, standing transfixed as he savored the view. He was beyond fortunate that he could call such a prize his mate, and he told himself so nearly every day. But, though he could have stood there forever and watched her, the anticipation to see and hold his prize pushed him toward the greenhouse door.
He called out in greeting, making Eve jump in surprise, and she nearly decapitated her delicate Terran orchids (which grew much better in their Romulan home than they ever did on Earth or Deep Space 9) with her shears. She’d been waiting anxiously all day for him to walk through the door, and now that he was cutting a path through the greenery - a good head taller than some of her largest plants - Eve was bursting with excitement. She was poised to run and throw her arms around him when Vreenak stopped before her, his expression morphing into shocked surprise.
“What?” Eve asked and worriedly looked at her apron but only spotted stray bits of dirt, nothing more.
“Nouhha…” Vreenak whispered as he drew near. “ I was gone for less than a month. How have you grown so large already?”
He stared down at his wife in amazement - his wife, who looked significantly more pregnant than she had when he’d left. Vreenak had been on a diplomatic mission for a few weeks, and while leaving his pregnant mate for so long made him anxious, he tried to remind himself that a month really wasn’t such a long time.
Except now that I see her…leaving was a mistake, he thought and gawked at the exceptionally prominent bulge ballooning out from under his wife’s breasts.
Eve had to laugh. “Well, yes, love. That’s what happens.” She tossed her apron onto the workbench so she wouldn’t get potting soil all over Vreenak’s tunic. “It only takes nine months to bake one of these things. And, now that I’m in my second trimester, I’m only going to get bigger from here.”
Vreenak gingerly palmed the curve of her stomach as if afraid to break something. He could scarcely imagine his lithe wife growing even wider, but he couldn’t deny that the vision appealed to him greatly.
“Setting aside how huge I’ve become,” Eve joked, “How was your trip, love?”
“Too long,” replied Vreenak, crouching down so he was level with his wife’s bump. “I never should have left... I didn’t miss anything important, did I?” He looked up at her sharply, hoping she’d say no.
This child was his first, perhaps his only, so he was going to be rather distraught if he’d missed out on anything significant. Just knowing that he’d been absent for a handful of his unborn child’s enthusiastic kicks was a jab to his heart.
“No, no,” Eve reassured him as she played with his hair. “Nothing too exciting. Just back aches and weird cravings.”
Vreenak hummed and pressed his face against Eve’s stomach. He could swear he could hear the fluttering of something - or someone - as they twisted and turned, just beyond Eve’s soft skin.
Beautiful, he thought lovingly.
It took a few minutes before he could tear himself away, but he did eventually stand and take his wife’s hand. Although Eve didn’t consider seemingly trivial things such as aches and cravings exciting, Vreenak was swimming in regret and was keen to make up for lost time.
“And what about you?” he asked her. “How have you fared in my absence?”
She looked at him quizzically. “What do you mean? I told you, back aches and cravings.”
“I’m not talking about the baby or the pregnancy, e’lev. How are you ?”
A slow, warm smile spread over Eve’s face, and she was instantly reminded of why she’d fallen in love with her austere senator. Even though the way she’d met her husband had been intense and deadly, she’d willingly agreed to go with him to Romulus, thus turning her back on her career and altering her life forever. For a time, she’d been worried that she may come to regret that decision, but the life Eve had built with Vreenak was more fulfilling than anything she could have imagined.
Eve smoothed her palms up her husband’s chest and stepped in close, or as close as she could manage, considering the extra person wedged in her belly. “I’m happy, deyhhan. Much happier now that you’re home.”

Love Without Reason - Kaz x Reader

Warnings: Basic SoC stuff, i.e. kidnapping, injuries, etc.
Words: 2467
(Some lyric were added, cut, or edited in order to fit better with the story, setting, and tone.)
Tumblr media
I, I loved you in secret
First sight, yeah, we love without reason
Oh, twenty-five years old
Oh, how were you to know,
When the unknown girl first strode into the Crow Club, Kaz barely spared her a second glance, simply a quick look for any signs of hidden cards or loaded dice in her pocket. He saw a glint of metal, but anyone with common sense -- especially a lone woman -- brought weapons to crowded gambling dens. But then he looked again, and he was stopped in the middle of the doorway to his office.
She's beautiful. The thought ran through his head without his bidding, and he did his best to ignore it, turning on his heel and returning to his office, hand clenched tightly on his cane. He wouldn't think about her. He would ignore it, let her gamble her money away into his coffers, and never think about the mysterious girl again. Instead he turned his attention to copying down the most recent calculations of Dreg’s funds. He still kept paper evidence of their supplies, even though he owned the Dregs and had no need to write the numbers in his head down on paper. Old habits die hard, he supposed. Or perhaps he just enjoyed physical reminders of his success.
A knock ran through the room. Kaz looked up from the desk, mildly confused. Last he knew of, no one was supposed to give him any reports today. Gripping his cane tightly, he got up from the desk and sat carefully on its top. "Come in," The door opened a crack, and his cane nearly hit the floor before he quickly caught it by the beak of the crow's head.
It was the girl.
He simply stared at her for a second, and only when their eyes met did he push himself back into reality. Without meaning to, he’d straightened his back and adjusted his gloves. He scowled. Kaz already had one weakness, one he was forced to wear everyday on his hands. He couldn’t afford to be caught off guard simply while looking at someone.
The girl must have assumed the scowl was a sign her life was at risk, because she closed the door a little bit, hiding her face from him.
He wanted to call it weak, but he couldn't bring himself to think anything negative about her. All he could do was balance his cane on his knees and briefly raise his hands in the air. Even if this girl made him weak, he wasn’t going to harm her without good reason.
She likely realized he wasn't going to shoot her where she stood, and she opened the door fully, took a step into the room, and finally spoke.
"I would like to join the Dregs."
He opened his mouth to ask anything, to gain any information on her, but she interrupted him.
“My name is Y/n L/n. I’m a Second Army defector. I arrived here yesterday, that’s why you haven’t seen me. I know you have at least one Grisha in your employ who does not seem to be enslaved or harmed, so I have come to ask for Dregs protection.”
Kaz had many, many questions, but one of them rose to his lips. “A Grisha? Any more specifics you feel like sharing?”
A half smile lifted on her face, and Kaz got the distinct impression she wasn’t someone to mess with. “I’m an Inferni. But I’ve developed my own way of fighting.” In one coordinated motion, she drew a curved blade -- a scythe, some part of Kaz’s brain informed him -- from a sheath at her side. Her thumb moved briefly along the grip, and he heard the distinct click of a lighter. Sure enough, in a second, licks of flame rose along the entirety of the blade. They grew, until her face was visible only through flickering light. Her half-smile had grown, and he couldn’t help but mirror it on his own face. The heat filled the room as one thought filled his head. She was incredible.
And just like that, Y/n became a problem Kaz couldn't simply ignore.
My, my love had been frozen
Deep blue, but you painted me golden
Kaz's first way of dealing with his problem was to simply give her simple jobs, setting her to scare naive tourists straight into the loving arms (and open coffers) of the Crow Club. But it was clear to her, and himself, that he was wasting Y/n’s talents. So he started giving her more important roles. But never on jobs with him. He never let himself near her outside of the Slat. Even then, he wouldn’t give her more than a nod. All his communication to her was through notes, slipped into her room while she was out.
Kaz knew it was childish. He knew he should be strong enough to at least talk to her. But in the years since whatever was between Inej and him died, he had shut his heart behind an unpickable lock. But here was a girl, a beautiful, incredible girl, who he feared held the key. So he wouldn’t let Y/n near him. He couldn’t.
Still, his eyes always strayed to her during late nights in the main rooms of the Slat. He watched the fire which sprang in her hands late at night when the lanterns were out. He heard her footsteps on the broken cobbles as she set out into the dark streets of the Barrel. So, of course, he heard her muffled scream. He heard the familiar sound of a fight breaking outside the rickety building. And he was on his feet before he could wonder if it was a good idea.
As Kaz opened the door to the cold air, he was greeted by an ugly sight; Y/n, gagged, with hands bound behind her back, sickle on the ground behind her, kicking and headbutting one of three attackers.
A precise jab to Y/n’s primary attacker’s calf brought him down to his knees, as Kaz spun the cane around to slam against another approacher’s jaw. Finally, glancing at his accomplices on the ground, the final attacker ran. Kaz didn’t mind. He’d send the Wraith after him later.
Carefully, he approached Y/n. She had crumpled to the ground, her left leg bent at an unnatural angle which was painful just to look at. She glanced at him, her face set in grim pain. “Thank you.”
“You’re under Dreg’s protection.”
She sat fully up, though the movement was jerky and clearly caused her serious pain. “I know. But seeing as how you never even meet my eyes, I didn’t think you would bother to help me.”
“Y/n, you are one of the most valuable memb-”
“Then why don’t you ever let me work with you? If I’m so ‘valuable’, let me actually do shit! Why do you act like working with me will kill you?”
Because it could. Because If I let myself know you, I’ll never be able to give you up. Because that would make me weak.
He stayed silent.
Y/n shook her head slightly, grabbed her scythe, and used the lighter on the hilt to set the air around her aflame. She started to rise off the ground, but it seemed to cause her too much pain, because only a second later she collapsed back to the ground. She took a breath, and it seemed like she was going to try again, but instead she reached out and grabbed this cane below the Crow head. She met his eyes with a challenging gaze, and he let his own hand slip away from it.
“I look forward to the time you finally embrace my abilities, my power,” Using the cane, she rose and limped toward the club, not even turning back to finish her sentence with, “Until then I’ll do your easy work. Just think of me the next time a job you are in goes wrong. Think of how much I could have helped. Think of how if you stopped being a child and ignoring me, the pain could’ve been avoided.”
Kaz winced. She wasn’t wrong. A lot of the jobs he’d been on recently were falling apart mid-way through. He’d lost two Dregs, and his own body was riddled with new bruises and cuts. As she walked away from him, hand on his cane, head a silhouette against the fire in her palms, and he couldn’t stay silent any longer.
“Y/n, wait.”
She stopped, though she refused to look at him. He deserved it, for all the times he’d refused to look at her.
But that would stop now.
Because for once in his life, Kaz Brekker told the truth.
Oh, and you held me close
Oh, how was I to know that
I could've spent forever with your hands in my pockets
Picture of your face in an invisible locket
You said there was nothing in the world that could stop it
It started small. Kaz thought it would stay small. He thought he would just allow himself to look at her, to be kinder to her. But the more time he spent around her, the further he fell. She started coming to his room in the Slat, sitting on the rickety chair in the corner which had no use previously. When the sun set, small trails of flame would fly to the candles scattered around the room, and Kaz would smile - Something he found he was doing unnervingly often when she was around.
He started drafting plans with her. At first she simply listened, pointing out errors seconds after his own brain spotted them. But what they discovered was her talent for creating contingency plans. Kaz prided himself in his plans, but the fact of the matter was that they went wrong. And he was tired of making entire new plans in the span of minutes. He listened, amazed, as Y/n took issues he would have labeled as “calculated risks”, and created backup plans, ideas, and adjustments in case things went wrong. Kaz found that he loved her scheming face.
However, with Kaz hyper-aware of his reputation in Ketterdam, and Y/n’s eye for dangers, both understood what their relationship meant. Kaz had allowed himself a weakness in his feelings for Y/n, but he wasn’t going to announce it to the world. He hated how each day they got closer, each time he held back the waters enough to hold the hand of the girl he cared so deeply for, they had to ensure no one was nearby. Slowly, though, they settled into a routine, days filled with hidden glances and secret meanings beneath whispered words.
One day, a knock rang through Kaz’s door before dawn. He was up, of course, as there was a small job being run later in the afternoon. “Yes?”
When he saw Y/n through the crack of the opening door, Kaz put down his pen. Sparing a quick glance to the hallway she was entering from, he was relieved to see no one. “Is everything okay? I’ve never seen you up this early,” Kaz said while raising his eyebrows; it was true, anytime Y/n stayed in his room long enough to fall asleep at night there, he always had to wake her up to remind her to return to her own room before all the others rose. Neither of them minded -- nights where he was comfortable enough to sleep in the same bed as her were rare, and so they embraced them no matter the inconveniences of secrecy.
“No, everything’s fine,” Y/n said with a small smile. “Just sometimes I can’t believe you- well, us - I forget that any of this is real. That something so pure exists in this dump of a city.”
Kaz waited. He knew her, and he knew there was more. She was a deeply complex person, and he knew that she had more to say.
I had a bad feeling
“So I… I got you something. Something physical. Something to remind me, and maybe you, that this is all real.” She pulled out a small cloth bag out of her pocket. Kaz recognized the weight of what was hidden inside, and his stomach dropped. She must have noticed something in his face, because she continued on quickly, “Kaz, I know you must have the same moments. Where you think this is a ticking time bomb. But we are something real, even if we can’t show it.” She pulled a sleek black ring from the bag. With slow fingers, Y/n reached to ward where Kaz’s gloveless fingers gripped his cane.
He flinched his hand back, images of the ring on his finger, the contrast of the black against his pale skin, filling his mind.
She winced. “No, the- it’s for the cane, Kaz.”
He looked up at her, meeting her eyes with a questioning glance.
“Just let me show you.” This time, when she reached out, he slowly handed her the cane, avoiding her fingers.
Her gaze lingered on his hand, and he knew Y/n had noticed his apprehension. Her worried eyes met him, but he broke eye contact quickly, gesturing for her to show him what the ring was. She flicked what must have been a hidden latch, and the ring opened on invisible hinges. She slipped it onto the black shaft of his cane, and shut it with a click. It blended perfectly with the black finish of the rest of the cane, the only indication for its existence the shadows the ring cast below it.
As Y/n handed the cane back to him, Kaz realized the ring sat where she had grabbed the cane the night he finally confessed everything to her. His heart flipped in his chest.
Once his hand was firmly wrapped around the golden crow’s head, Y/n turned to leave. Kaz didn’t miss the look on her face. His flinch away from her had hurt her. He hadn’t trusted her judgment. Had assumed she was making a rash gesture.
Without thinking, Kaz grabbed her wrist with his unoccupied hand. A second passed, both of them glancing at the touching skin. Kaz waited for the water to rush in.
It didn’t.
Kaz looked at her, their eyes meeting once again. As he slowly released her wrist, he spoke. “Y/n, I love you.” Her eyes widened, and he gave a small smile.
“I love you too.” Her voice broke as she said it.
As she slowly left his room, Kaz noticed that a matching black ring wrapped around the top of her scythe’s grip.
A secret love, represented by a secret pair of rings.
Ghezen, he loved this girl.

future- dallas winston x fem! reader
a/n: sorry i haven’t posted anything in a while i’ve just been super busy! but i’m into the outsiders now so yeah enjoy 😭i hate this a lot but i’ll be working on better stuff soon
warnings: blood mention, cut mention
————————————————————————
it was 12am and you were changing into a cream white silk slip when you heard a rythmic knock on your door
a normal person would be startled or pissed, but you were used to this by now
you knew who it was immediately, your boyfriend, dallas winston
you were taking to long to get to the door
“babeee open up”
he was all bloodied and bruised up, more than he usually was after a rumble
“god dal you look fucked up!” you say as you run up to him
“relax dollface i’m fine, just a few cuts and scrapes here and there, get me a cancer stick will ya babe”
“dally you are not fine stay here”
you run over to get some gauze and bandages from your room
“honey sit down”
he listens to you and sits down
he shuffles around in the couch seat trying to hide the immense pain he was going through, though you could still see it visibly
he accepted it at this point and took off his leather jacket, allowing you to see more of his injuries
that’s when you notice a blood stain on the side of his torso
“dallas don’t tell me this was another knife fight”
“ok it was, but babe if i had known it was gonna be a knife fight i wouldn’t have gotten like this you know those socs never fight fair”
“alright enough, take off your shirt that cuts gonna get infected if we wait any longer”
“wow you’re really that desperate to see me shirtless huh babe”
“dal just take the shirt off and shut up please”
normally he wouldn’t accept that kind of talk towards him but he was head over heels in love with you so he’d let you say anything to him and wouldn’t care, mainly because he just adored your voice
he took off his shirt and you got to work
“this is gonna sting a little okay”
you look up at him knowing he’s not focusing on your words instead he’s just looking straight into your eyes
“ah fuck” dally throws his head back onto the chair from the pain of the stinging
“ i told you it was gonna sting”
you wrap the gauze around his stomach noticing just how deep the cut actually was
“dal this shits pretty deep”
“yeha yeha i know ,just hurry i wanna go to bed”
“ok..”
you finish wrapping and bandaging and he gets up to go to your bedroom
“wait you’re staying over tonight?”
“yeah? i can’t stay over at bucks tonight the cops are gonna be looking for me over there”
“what the fuck? what else did you do now?”
“the cops showed up right before i started walking here, they saw me and started chasing me down, don’t worry though i don’t think they saw me come this way”
“shit dallas why you always gotta be getting into trouble like this?”
“what are you talking about?”
you see a rise in anger in his tone, which starts to scare you
“forget it, just go to bed dal the extra pillows are in the closet by the left door”
“alright…” he says turning back to you
….
after a long 15 minutes of silence, you assumed dally had fallen asleep already so you went along to the bathroom to get ready for the night
as you were washing your face, the sight of the gash on his stomach just kept replaying
you couldn’t help but think about how if that knife had gone a little further, you could’ve lost him forever
while you and dal had your rough spots, at the end of the day you could never live with out him
and with the thought of that your eyes began to water, then a river of tears came
you didn’t want dally to hear you, so you washed away the tears and just got straight into bed as if nothing happened
unfortunately he’s an incredibly light sleeper and when you got into bed he woke up
“y/n what time is it?”
his voice groggy and dry
“you’ve only been asleep for an hour go back to bed”
your voice was shaky and you knew he would hear it
and he did
“y/n what’s wrong?”
“what do you mean what’s wrong there’s nothing wrong”
dally turns on the lamp which reveals your puffy red eyes and nose
you see the scars on his face, his black eye and busted lip in more detail now that the light is on, you just broke down completely
he takes you in and holds on to you tightly
“doll what’s wrong, i can’t help you if i don’t know what’s buggin you”
“it’s you dal, i love you too much to see you getting hurt like this all the time”
“what?”
“if that blade had gone even an inch further i probably would’ve never seen you again, and i- i just don’t think i’d be able to live with that”
“you know i’ll never die from a rumble like that, i’m tough okay? you don’t gotta worry alright”
“i know you’re tough. but you’re not made of steel, a bullet goes through you and you’re gone… gone! you realize that right?”
“i know, but that’s not gonna happen alright”
dally moves his hands to holds your face
“look i know i don’t have a future, but you do and i just don’t wanna see you wasting that on someone like me. but if you want me to be a part of that future then i’ll try to keep out of shit that could get me killed”
“but you do have a future dal, at least with me..”
“so please just try to keep out of trouble”
“i can’t make too many promises but i can say ill try”
“thank you dally”
you look up into his eyes and fall into his warm embrace.

Do you think that Jason should’ve stayed dead? I’ve never read Under the Red Hood, but I’ve read A Death in the Family, A Lonely Place of Dying, and a significant amount of New Earth arcs where Jason is presented as a martyr and his death is a point of character development for Bruce and Dick. Do you think this was more useful to the narrative than a resurrected Jason? Do you think that any aspect of his Red Hood identity has helped his character or added to his story?
i will need you to bear with me; i will bring lots of literary theory, tradition and philosophy into it. but i swear it’s actually relevant.
first of all, I think jason should have stayed alive. logically speaking, killing off the only at the time representation of that kind in the series, the only potential voice of the lower class (that wasn't a love interest) in bruce’s high soc world was already bad enough.
the thing about jason’s death is that it did play a role in the wider narrative, but not necessarily as a good point of character development for anyone at all. the way his image was completely distorted made his death look less dreadful than it was; there was barely ever any love in the way in which he was mentioned, which, imo, most of the time didn’t even make a martyr out of him; he was just a collateral victim that seemed to bring whatever he had upon himself. (and wouldn't it be much sadder if he was remembered for who he actually was?)
but you can’t argue with the fact that jason’s death set a completely new tone for most batman stories; nor ignore that it had a huge impact on the universe as a whole. you know how there was an unspoken rule that DC could bring anyone back, but jason? (look: peterson's "choices" in "a death in the family" reprint) that served a purpose; it was supposed to show that anytime your favourite character was killed off, maybe they weren’t actually coming back, because jay never did. and it also made batman into a real gothic story, with shadows of the past menacing in the background at all times.
now, at that time at least, you would have to be an idiot to bring back a character like that and make them proceed like any other comic book superhero who died 2748 times and came back. what I’m trying to say is that I do get why winick chose to make utrh a tragedy, because Jason (at that time) needed to haunt the narrative, dead or alive. the problem is, it doesn’t change that this decision was very insensitive. i think utrh could have came off as much less classist if winick tried to restore jason’s reputation as a kind, sensitive kid in the flashbacks, instead of going for the aggressive robin image. these flashbacks are mostly what makes the reader remember that even in the 80s original run bruce claimed he took jason in as a robin because otherwise jason would become a criminal. oh, that’s dramatic irony, isn’t it? but classism shouldn’t be a literary device. why not instead focus on another facet of tragedy, catharsis? why not show that there was love and care and that while fate/the system might have doomed jason, it wasn’t jason’s natural predisposition as a kid from the streets, but the opposite, really? that sort of self awareness surely would make the narrative less problematic.
another thing is that going back to jason’s original motivations without all the violent bullshit would make for a much better hauntology. see, western gothic’s hauntology is based on the horror of the Other. it disconnects the hero from the reality. and that's fun for a time, but gets tired when you read the same thing for decades. why not give it a romantic, eastern european in spirit twist? for context, eastern european romantic lit shares many themes with gothic lit, minus the inescapable horror of the other. because the spirits that come into the narrative are not there to remind people of their death; they are mostly there to remind them of what they died for or their life itself. they are there to link you with your ancestors, culture, etc., they are a way for you to connect with your roots. and i think such a twist would be perfect in jason’s story; instead of his death haunting him, it should be his life from before that taunts him at night. he should remember where he comes from, and the crime alley, for example, should be established not only as a place of trauma, but also source of his dedication to protecting his community. the ghosts of the past should bring you home.
i think this is a great thing about how convoluted and specific as a genre comics are, because you can rectify the previous narrative and commit to meta almost in-universe. if DC wanted to, they could address victim blaming, they could address classism, they could reconstruct the tragedy. and I think at this point it’s safe to say that jason’s death doesn't feel that significant in terms of the universe as a whole, so it’s a good moment to do that. it’s just that I doubt they will.
but this would be my preference, because ultimately, there are themes in the red hood that i find very interesting (if they were properly overwritten that is). i don’t think jason failing morally is classist per se; i think what is classist is that it is implied that it was ingrained in his personality. and you could go in a much more endearing and heart-breaking route: to show him failing morally explicitly because he just cares so much about protecting other people that he can’t help himself and crosses the line (this would correspond nicely with the garzonas incident btw). and then, it would be very interesting to see him realising that crossing that line really means something, just as bruce said; that he ended up distancing himself from those that he wishes to keep safe, that he further isolates them and himself both. there would be value in a deconstruction like that, but there’s not much merit in his characterisation and storyline as it is, giving that the reasons for which he kills are all over the place (but that’s a topic for another post. i think it was @roobylavender who wrote a post about how jason's motives would make more sense if they were motivated by self-defense).
tldr; i think it all could be made into a great story still, if it referred to its own previous issues.
If you read that far I’m impressed btw.

i’m glad your poll is no longer as anti-nina as it was, but it still makes me so sad my fav character is apparently everyone’s least favourite 😭 why do you think people see her as the most expendable (after matthias, which is a whole other can of worms)
I honestly didn't know Nina wasn't as liked as i though, i was sure she was one of the gv characters everyone liked.
I have diferent theories, maybe people see her as less expendable because, a lot of tumblr people prioritize ships over character and (as another poll of mine showed) at least among my mutuals helnik is not as liked as wesper or kanej , so they are not thinking on Nina as an expendable character, just a sacrifice to preserve the other ships (a very shallow reasoning if you ask)
Now , on the "least evil crow" i was expecting people to have diferent opinions, since the parameters of good and evil are diferent for every people. The thing is that i was expecting people to vote Wylan higher because a lot of us conffuse "nice" with "good" and Wylan is pretty much the nicer out of the crows. The surprising thing was that Inej ended up leading that poll while Nina got so little votes ,less that Matthias for godness sake.
My theory for that (hope is not true) may be that people have a really REALLY outdated labeling for bad and good
religious, quiet and wise girls are "good", loud, flirty and hot headed girls are "bad" , thats how a lot of people think and i am really afraid people might be fitting Inej and Nina on those labels. I adore Inej, with all my heart, you all know i do and i hate when people get her wrong. But between those two, the most heroic one , the ligther of the greys is clearly Nina. Not that Inej is a bad person, she is simply not the girl that is oriented to save a whole country, she still wins "goodness" points for going out of her way to save slaves. This is not saying is wrong thinking Inej is the least evil, just that so little votes for Nina make no sense.
Also, now that i think about it. It could be the already mentioned ship focussed mindset. Lets be honest, only half of the fandom loves and see Inej and Nina for their characters , the other half only see them as self inserts, only whorthy of being studied in their relationships with Kaz and Matthias. This is why EVERYTHING about Inej must be related to Kaz and Nina is better off dead than witouth Matthias (soc fandom has more misoginy than you would expect)
Therefore this people see Inej/Kaz as a devil/angel thing, while Nina and Matthias as a flirty girl/quiet boy , which probably supports while they are not seen as individual people , just extensions of their ships.
Now for the "which crows would win on a fight" which, obviously is Nina! can the other crows freaking raise the dead? I´ll leave it like this: Superman beats Batman, Batman himself knows it thats why he needs a lot of preparations and resources (so whoever voted Kaz over Nina, Jesper and Inej, like huh?)
I am NOT trying to prop out Nina at the expense of Inej,(i am not stupid, i know what that would imply) i actually think this is missing Inej´s character too, along Matthias she is the crow that goes trought the most moral challenges and she is shown to be extremelly competent at fighting by her own merits (she is the only important non grisha female on the whole saga) i think those things make her special. This is NOT to say people should like Nina more than her, i love that Inej is the most beloved crow in most grishaverse circles. I just think that people see Nina as more expendable (like the question said) because of a mix of stereotypes and shipping

The Insiders Chapter 12: Treat- Darry Curtis x Ruth Bellows
Tumblr media
Word Count: 3.8kk
Tumblr media
April 18, 1965
“You still haven’t told me what we’re doing,” Piper attempted to prod Ruth as she drove back to the Curtis home. After Tuesday returned home safely Ruth had made the split second decision that she wanted to take all the girls out for a girls day away from Tulsa. After all, they could all agree that they deserved it after the whole rumble and soc business. So, she informed Tuesday and Charlie to get ready before taking Piper home and getting ready herself. Now they were on their way back to Darry’s house and Piper had been asking about what they were doing ever since Ruth had picked her up.
“Because I already told you I’d tell all of you when we get closer to Broken Arrow,” she answered simply, making the younger girl scrunch up her nose.
“Yeah, but I’m your favorite.” Ruth couldn’t help but laugh at her attempts at prying her for information.
“It wouldn’t be fair,” she reminded her. Piper huffed, then faced her with a playful grin.
“You’re not kidnapping me, are you?”
“Guess you’ll have to wait to find out,” she joked as she pulled into the driveway, honking her horn once. It took a minute or two but Tuesday and Piper finally walked out of the house in different outfits than that morning.
“Finally!” Piper called dramatically as the two reached the car, making Ruth laugh and Tuesday roll her eyes.
“Don’t get your panties in a twist Piper,” Tuesday muttered dryly as she climbed into the backseat. Charlie followed after her, greeting Ruth once they were both inside.
“Hi girls,” the woman greeted with a smile as she pulled out of the driveway.
“So where are we going?” Piper was the one to ask the question that all three younger girls were thinking.
“Well, I figured that we could go into town and get our nails done,” Ruth answered. “I also have an appointment to get highlights in my hair so if any of you want something done they take walk-ins, and maybe we could do a little shopping.” Tuesday gasped excitedly while Piper squealed.
“How fun!”
“Now I really feel underdressed,” Charlie laughed, but Ruth shook her head.
“Nah, where we’re going it doesn’t matter how you dress. There aren’t any greasers or socs to be seen.”
“Where are we going?” Tuesday asked, her interest piqued.
“Broken Arrow,” answered Piper, having asked Ruth the same thing before they’d even arrived at Tuesday's house.
“Alright, I feel better now,” Charlie said with a laugh. “You’re the best, Ruth.” The older girl shrugged coyly.
“I certainly try my best.”
“And it’s working,” Tuesday added with a wide smile.
“This is so exciting, I don’t have any friends at school,” Piper said happily, which made Ruth glance at her in concern.
“Wait, really?”
“Pony is my best and only friend” she nodded in confirmation, making the older girl raise an incredulous eyebrow.
“Oh, friend huh?” She repeated in a teasing tone, watching as the younger girl turned red and nodded.
“Mhm! My good friend.. Ponyboy.” Ruth hummed, obviously not believing her, but she nodded anyway.
“Alright then.”
“How did you and Darry meet?” Piper asked, obviously desperate to change the subject.
“Oh, well he worked for my dad. I came to work with him a lot growing up and I eventually met Darry when he got the job there during our sophomore year,” she explained. “I’d known him a little because I was a cheerleader and he was on the football team, but we hadn’t really talked until he got the job.”
“That’s so cute! That’s like the high school dream,” the girl sighed happily. “Gee- that’s so dreamy.” Her response made Ruth laugh.
“You know, there was a point in high school where everyone thought we would get together,” she mentioned offhandedly, which made Piper squeal.
“Oh my god- did he know? Did you know? Were you guys embarrassed about it? Did you like him?” She asks, very obviously fascinated in Ruth’s love life. Her avalanche of questions made the woman laugh.
“Oh I definitely knew, and based on how he looked at me sometimes I think he knew. I don’t really know how he felt but I was a little embarrassed at first. I got over it pretty quickly, and yes I did like him.”
“That’s so sweet, that’s like one of the movies at the drive-in,” Piper laughed. “You think you guys are gonna get maaaarried?” Ruth blushed at the teasing tone the younger girl mimicked from Ruth’s earlier teasing, then shrugged.
“I don’t know the answer to that,” she muttered, which made Piper laugh again.
“I’m just teasing. That is so romantic though.”
“I like to think so,” she nodded, then her smile turned a bit sad. “I don’t know why we never got together. I guess life just pulled us apart…” she trailed off absentmindedly.
“That happens sometimes, maybe you guys weren’t ready for one another,” the younger girl shrugged. “Maybe now was the time for a reason.”
“I certainly hope so,” she breathed out as she pulled into a small shopping strip in Black Arrow. The four of them clambered out of the car.
“Wow, this place is so neat,” Piper commented with a wide smile, earning a nod from Ruth.
“I like to come here when I want to get out of Tulsa,” she responded as she led the three girls into the salon.
“Everyone looks so friendly,” Piper added as she looked around.
“Everyone that I’ve met is super nice,” she responded, opening the door for them. “Now I’m just getting highlights and trimming my hair but you guys get whatever. Remember, this is all my treat so don’t hold back.”
“I don’t even know what to do, I’m so excited,” Piper said, which made Ruth giggle.
“Well the hairstylist is gonna help you figure out what you want. Look through the magazines and figure it out,” she explained. She waited for the girls to start looking through magazines and such before going to greet her hairstylist and sit down. As the stylist got started Ruth noticed Piper sit beside her out of the corner of her eye. She talked to her own hairdresser before said person got started on her hair. They sat in silence for a minute before Piper finally looked at her.
“Would you- if I told you a secret, would you tell anyone?” She asked nervously.
“Of course I wouldn’t,” she answered without hesitation “You know that.” Piper nodded then took a deep breath.
“Me and Pony are dating,” she said almost too quickly for Ruth to understand, but she knew what the younger girl was saying. She smirked a little.
“I sort of guessed that already, honey,” she responded in a teasing tone, which made Piper blush.
“R-Really?” She asks, somewhat mortified.
“Don’t worry, I can keep the secret,” Ruth winked at her. “I just happened to see you climbing into his window the other day.” She giggled as she recalled watching Piper clamber into Ponyboy’s window just a few days ago from her car.
“Oh,” Piper muttered shyly. “That’ll do it.”
“Does he make you happy?” The girl nodded.
“He does make me happy,” she confirmed, slightly embarrassed. “I mean- I wasn’t lying when I said he was my only friend.” Ruth smiled sympathetically then nodded.
“Well, he is a very sweet boy and I hope you guys are happy,” she said sincerely.
“I am, I’m very happy. It’s also fun to sneak in, it’s very romantic.” That made the woman laugh as she nodded in agreement.
“Totally,” she agreed.
“This is really fun, I don’t ever get to talk about stuff like this,” Piper admitted.
“Well you can always come to me Piper. We don’t live that far from each other.” She watched the girl’s eyes light up.
“Really?” She asked hopefully.
“Of course!” She giggled. “I don’t mind. And I’m sure Tuesday and Charlie would say the same too.”
“Gee you’re all too nice,” Piper muttered.
“That’s why you fit in,” Ruth shrugged in response.
“That’s good, I like it. I like you all a lot.” Ruth cooed at her.
“Aww Piper you’re so sweet.” Piper grinned as her hairdresser finished up. She squealed after seeing her hair, which had been shag cut into a mullet with a few chunky highlights.
“Oh! I love it!”
“It looks amazing!” The woman gushed. “That hairstyle totally suits you.”
“I feel like a supermodel!” She exclaimed joyfully as she stood.
“Who says you can’t be?” Ruth giggled as she stood too, her hair also finished. “I think you could be one.”
“You look like one too! You look so cute!”
“Thank you,” she responded amusedly before walking over to Tuesday and Charlie, stopping when she saw the latter’s hair “Oh my- Charlie you look amazing!”
“That’s the understatement of the century!” Tuesday laughed.
“Gee, it’s so different, I’m gonna have to get used to it,” Charlie laughed as she ruffled up her hair a bit.
“Well I think all three of you look amazing” Ruth compliments “Do you guys want anything else done here, or are we done here?”
“I’m done,” Tuesday shrugged, Piper and Charlie agreeing with her. The latter took out her wallet and faced Ruth.
“There ain’t no way I’m letting you pay for all of us,” she said. Ruth merely laughed as she walked up to the receptionist.
“Watch me.” Charlie huffed, but thanked her before following her out of the salon once she finished paying.
“I hope Tulsa is ready for us after today,” she joked, earning a laugh from Ruth.
“Alright girls, now you have the choice to go shopping or get your nails done first.” They took a vote, then the girls walked towards the nail salon a few doors away.
“I’ve never gotten my nails done,” Charlie admitted with a laugh.
“There’s always a first time for everything,” Ruth responded kindly as she led the girls inside. The girl hummed thoughtfully, then smiled playfully.
“If it impedes me working out, I’ll bite them off,” she half joked.
“No need for that. You can’t just pick a color and they’ll paint it,” the older girl explained with a giggle, pointing to the shelves of nail polish colors. As they looked over the various nail polish colors, Charlie suddenly turned to the oldest girl.
“Ruth- how did you do it?” She asked, catching Tuesday’s and Piper’s attention. “You’re completely self sufficient, you’re only with a man because you truly love him and don’t need him, you could do it all on your own. How?” Ruth was surprised by Charlie’s question, but she still answered.
“Well, I’m not gonna lie and say it’s easy. After all, all I did was take over my dad’s business,” she laughed softly. “But it does take time to find your groove and I needed to be mindful of everything I did to the company. And as far as the man thing, the only reason you should be with any man is because you love him. Men are a luxury, not a necessity, and you don’t need them in order to live your life.” Charlie shoved her hands in her pockets.
“I don’t know I’ve given myself up to a few soc boys who pamper like no tomorrow,” she laughed as they took a seat beside each other.  “But it’s not easy, is it? Running all of that?”
“No, it isn’t,” Ruth shook her head. “It’s the opposite actually. You have to consider every possible thing that could happen to anyone or anything.”
“Do you ever feel bad about things? Like firing people- or cutting salaries?”
“Oh definitely,” she sighed softly, hating the mere thought. “It’s the worst thing I can think of because at least half of my employees are greasers who rely on their paychecks. They’re all hard workers, and they’re all real sweet.”
“I’ll bet,” Charlie nodded. “So how do you get over that?” Ruth shrugged.
“I try to compensate as much as I can. Pay them at least a little until I know they have a new job. And if I ever need extra help they’re the ones I call. There’s not much else I can do.” The younger girl hummed thoughtfully before nodding.
“You’re pretty nice. I know business owners that just drop people off the face of the business with no last paycheck, no sorry, nothing.”
“I learned from my dad,” the older girl smiled, somewhat sadly.  “He was one of the nicest men I’ve ever known, always willing to give people second and third chances. He taught me everything I know, and not just for the business.”
It felt odd for her to talk about her dad in past tense. He hadn’t been dead for that long, so the wound was still semi fresh. But she was still always happy to talk about him because he was the best man she’d ever known (even without her bias). Charlie smiled softly at her.
“That’s sweet,” she responded. “Not everyone has someone like that. He must’ve been a phenomenal man.”
“He was,” Ruth sighed, then shook her head. “But I’m not here to talk about dead relatives. Tell me about your family, you live with your dad, right?” Charlie smiled and nodded eagerly.
“Oh, my dad! Yeah, I live with my dad, he’s fine. It’s definitely interesting growing up with him,” she trailed off, becoming distant before snapping out of it less than a second later and nodding affirmingly. “He does his best.” Ruth got the feeling that Charlie wasn’t quite in the mood to discuss her father, so she moved on.
“Do you have any siblings?” Charlie shook her head.
“Nope, just me. Just me and my dad. I wish I had siblings though. It gets a little lonely at my house. It’s cold and lonely” she answered with a laugh, though the older girl frowned.
“Aw, I’m sorry Charlie.”
“Oh it’s fine, I’m not unhappy. I get fed well, I have a roof, my father is supportive of me - although he was very disappointed when he found out I was dating Soda,” she half joked. “But it’s a quaint life. A quaint house.”
“If it makes you feel better, my mom wasn’t too thrilled about me dating Darry,” Ruth responded with a small smile, earning a laugh from the younger girl.
“We’re on the same boat. My poor dad just shook his head, took off his glasses and said I should give him some time to think.”
“That was my mom!” She laughed. “Only she doesn’t have glasses so she just closed her book.” Charlie just laughed and shook her head as her nail artist finished. After looking at her nails she hummed.
“Wow, this is different.” The older girl looked at her nails then nodded approvingly.
“Is it a good different?”
“I think so,” she nodded with a smile. Ruth smiled then nodded as her own nail artist finished their work.
“I think they look great.” Charlie took a moment to glance at Ruth’s nails, which had been fashioned into a French manicure.
“Yours look phenomenal, look at you!” Ruth giggled as she stood up.
“Lots of big changes today. How are you feeling?”
“I feel,” she paused, taking a second to look for the right word. “Confident.” Her answer made the older girl smile.
“Good. I’m glad,” she said as she headed to the front counter to pay, Charlie following.
“I admire you a lot,” Charlie admitted, surprising Ruth for the second time that day.
“Why’s that?”
“You’re just inspiring. You’re running a business, you’re chasing after true love, you treat yourself, you’re level headed,” she took a second to think. “That’s everything I want to be.” The older girl couldn’t hide her blush as she smiled at her.
“Well I have to say that is a tremendous compliment.”
“And I hope to get to know you better,” Charlie added as Ruth led her out of the salon with Tuesday and Ruth following.
“I can’t wait for that. Maybe we can hang out more,” she concluded before facing all three of the younger girls.
“Alright girls, pick a shop and go.” Piper wasted no time in running for a cute little shop next door, pulling Tuesday with her.
“I don’t even know what I would look good in, I buy my clothes at the discount bin,” Charlie muttered with a laugh.
“Guess we’ll have to find your style then,” Ruth laughed as well as she followed Piper and Tuesday. Once they were all  inside the youngest girl grinned.
“Wow, this is so chic!”
“Oh yeah, I come to this place all the time,” Ruth nodded with a giggle.
“Well gee, how do you guys even pick from all of these clothes?” The blonde asked as Tuesday and Piper walked off together.
“Just look around and see what calls to you,” Ruth shrugged as she began sifting through clothes on a nearby rack. After a few minutes of browsing Ruth looked at Charlie to check on her, and she immediately noticed how overwhelmed the girl looked. A small smile formed on her face as she moved to stand beside her.
“Need some help?” She offered kindly.
“Please,” Charlie answered without hesitation, laughing afterwards.
“Well, how do you feel about button downs?” She asked, grabbing a few slightly oversized shirts and holding them out to her. Charlie just grabbed them, not quite caring what any of them looked like.
“Alright then,” Ruth laughed, grabbing a few pairs of shorts and jeans and handing them to her. “Take these, too.” Charlie nodded and walked to the dressing room without another word. Ruth followed her, though she stopped outside of the dressing room, waiting to see how Charlie liked the clothes she picked out.
As Ruth waited she ended up trying on everything she’d found for herself. It was a lot of her usual style, but there were a few things she had grabbed that she wouldn’t normally reach for. She ended up walking out of the dressing room wearing a burnt orange cropped long sleeve shirt that tied in the front as well as some flared jeans. It seemed like she was just in time too because Charlie finally stepped out in a black floral print shirt that had been tucked into some high waisted shorts. After just one glance Ruth could tell Charlie was in love with the outfit based on the confident expression that adorned the younger girl’s face. A wide smile appeared on the woman’s face and she nodded approvingly.
“It looks like you’ve found your style,” she comments, making the girl nod.
“I think so too,” Charlie admitted softly.
“Good. Did you see anything else you liked?” Charlie thought for a moment before ultimately shaking her head.
“No, this is good.”
“Okay. Well I’m gonna go pay for all this then we can go. It’s starting to get late,” she informed her before heading to the front. Tuesday and Piper joined them a moment later, also sporting different outfits of their own. Once she finished paying Ruth led the girls out.
“Did you guys have fun today?” She asked, earning an enthusiastic nod from Tuesday.
“Mhm!” Charlie and Piper agreed as they all made their way to Ruth’s car.
“Maybe we could all do this again sometime,” Ruth suggested as they climbed in.
“But you can’t pay next time, we’re treating you,” Charlie answered.
“I already said I had more than enough to pay for all this,” the woman pointed out with a small laugh.
“But next time it’s on us,” Charlie repeated, this time more demanding. Ruth huffed as she started the car, pulling out of the shopping strip.
“Alright, alright, I hear you.”
The ride home was uneventful. It seemed that the last two hectic days had finally caught up to the girls because the car ride was mostly silent. When they reached the Curtis house Ruth got out and stretched, tired from all the driving that day. She then followed Tuesday’s lead in grabbing her shopping bags before following her inside along with Piper and Charlie. Darry, Dally, Soda and Ponyboy were all sitting around the living room either reading the paper, watching tv or reading a book respectively.
“We’re home,” Tuesday announced as she stepped inside, Ruth close behind her. Darry, who had been the one reading the newspaper, greeted her.
“Welcome ba-” he paused mid sentence when he finally got a look at her. He just sat there for a moment staring at her. Ruth couldn’t help but smile as she walked over to him, kissing his cheek.
“Hi honey.”
“H-Hi,” the man just barely managed to get out as he stood up, having been rendered speechless by his girlfriend’s new look. “Gee, this was a surprise.” A small laugh escaped the girl’s lips.
“Do you like it?”
“Ruth you look gorgeous” he responded sincerely before kissing her forehead, admiring her for a moment. “You’re just unbelievably stunning.” Ruth couldn’t help but blush at his compliment, and she found herself giggling like a schoolgirl.
“Well thank you.”
“How did I get so lucky?” Darry asked more to himself than her, but she still answered anyway.
“I ask myself the same thing every day,” she responded simply, kissing his cheek again before sitting in his big arm chair.
“You look so small in my chair,” he commented with a laugh.
“Which means there’s more than enough room to sit with me,” she responded cheekily. Darry laughed and picked her up, placing her on his lap once he sat down.
“That’s better.”
“Much,” Ruth agreed, wrapping her arms around his neck and smiling when he kissed her temple.
“I’m sure the girls appreciated today so much,” he said softly.
“If they didn’t say it a million times their smiles gave it away,” Ruth laughed, Darry joining in.
“Well thank you for doing that. It means the world to me that they're happy.”
“Me too,” she admitted. “They all needed this.” Darry nodded in agreement before looking down at her.
“Are you and your mom doing okay? I wanted to bring over a home cooked meal and have dinner with you guys,” he mentioned, earning a nod from the girl.
“She’s been fine. And I think she’d appreciate something that I haven’t made,” she laughed.
“Whenever you’d like that I'll be there. I miss your mom, and I haven’t seen her since we started- you know.”
“Sounds like a plan,” Ruth nodded followed by a yawn.
“Tired?”
“A little,” she admitted. “Today was fun but very tiring.”
“Let’s get you to bed then” he muttered, picking her up.
“I can walk, you know,” the woman mentioned amusedly.
“And I can carry you,” he shot back as he carried her up to his room, laying her on the bed. Once she was comfortable Ruth held out her arms for him expectantly. Darry couldn’t help but laugh as he climbed in beside her.
“Well, aren't you a princess?” He teased.
“Duh,” she responded as if it were obvious. The man laughed then yawned as the girl’s eyes fell closed, and they fell asleep in each other’s arms.

there's no sound but the engines drone our minds set free to roam. [ao3 link]
based on this post. tw for ableism & ableist language, misogyny, and cheating.
God, this fair is so disgusting.
He never went to the Tulsa county fair literally ever and for good reason. The only people that hung around were annoying ass kids, crackheads, and beer slingers who had nothing else better to do. He could be at Randy’s house or something. Or pretending he missed Cherry and begging her to come back.
Bob never did anything bad to her, why was she so mad? Just cause I called Marcia ugly? She is! If she just stopped fuckin’ eating, maybe she’d score-
“Bob, I’m bored.”
The arm candy he brought along for the evening, Sylvia? He thought her name was, complained. “Let’s just go home.”
“Who the fuck are you telling me what to do?”
He asked incredulously, almost offended that she would dare suggest he do something. She wasn’t even his girlfriend. And in spite, he responded. “I’m staying. If you wanna go, you go. I ain’t done yet.”
Sylvia just gave an annoyed eye roll. This was gonna be a long night.
They were almost to the top of the ferris wheel. Sylvia wanted to get on, and because Bob was on his second beer for the night he was more easygoing. Both with his personality and his wallet.
The wheel stopped, and Bob just leaned back in his seat. Sylvia leaned on him, and he felt disgusted. He shrugged her off.
“Hey I ain’t your boyfriend. Find somebody else to pimp out.” He could’ve slept with her if he wanted to. He was free. But the soc kinda knew Sylvia’s reputation. And would rather keep himself from catching any fleas she might have.
“I have a boyfriend already.” She mumbled, staring at the stars. Almost looking sad. Did she still like him? It just made Bob even more grossed out.
“If you do, why’re you coming to me?” He fished around for his cigs. Marlboro Reds. The only ones his grandma’s willing to get him. ‘Classy’ she called ‘em.
“Cuz he’s in the cooler, and I’m bored.” She just sighed, leaning on her hand. “And I’m kinda tired of him. He hates me too.” She kicked her feet back in forth.
“Oh?” He gave one of his evil grins, lighting one of his cigs. “What you do now?” Now Bob was interested. He rarely heard these broads talk about their relationships because it’s just annoying but this one? A guy that’s still in jail and he has his girl?
“He told me once. He’s crazy. Takes all these meds for it, I think he’s a junkie. Can never get his shit together. Anyway he started talking about these things he’s been hearing in his head like voices and shit.” She reached for a cigarette and Bob only let her because he wanted to hear the rest of the story. “And I told him he was crazy, ya know? I mean he is if he hears voices all the time. He asked me if I loved him and I said no, I don’t. Don’t want you to kill me. I didn’t know I was dating a psycho.”
Man, she was mean. And Bob thought he had the title of biggest asshole in Tulsa. Sure he definitely said something like that once, but that was a while ago.
“What, you think he’s gonna strangle you in your sleep cuz the voices tell him to?” Bob shrugged, blowing smoke up towards the stars. “I’m glad I don’t gotta deal with that shit. I don’t hang out with freaks.”
“Yeah. He gets all excited sometimes and it’s the only time he gets happy. But he stopped. Apparently I found out that’s cuz he’s on drugs for it.” She kicked her feet back and forth, lighting her own stick. “So one time it went missing. He was digging around for it everywhere and turned it upside down. Thought the cops got to him and took it away.”
The light of the cigarette lit up the small booth they were in. Bob took his lighter away. “He end up finding it?”
“Nah. I flushed it down the toilet.” Sylvia leaned back, as if she was gonna fall asleep any moment. “I told him later. He got all quiet like I told him his family died. And he wouldn’t talk to me for a week.” She shrugged. “Thought it would make him happy again. And it did. He was so happy it landed him in the cooler.”
Bob was starting to think ‘happy’ wasn’t what he thought it was. But he just readjusted in his seat so he could look down, wondering when the wheel would turn already. It’s like they want him stuck here.
“You’re a mean bitch, you know that? No wonder he hates you.” He started snickering, seeing her wince at his words. Was he starting to feel… Bad? Angry? No… Randy would call it ‘pity’. Like when he sees little greasers alone on the streets. “Bet nobody else likes being around you. Is that why you’re with me?”
She shrugged again, trying to not let his words get to her. But it failed with how much her leg was shaking. “Just thought it was funny.”
“Uh huh.” He snubbed out his cig when the wheel jumped to life. “Take a guy’s meds and he’s got nothing. Cheat on him and he’s got no one. He ain’t happy. He’s in pain.” He snorted. “Thought you would be smart enough to know that. But turns out I was right. You’re dumber than you look.”
Sylvia doesn’t answer. It’s obvious she didn’t anticipate Bob telling her off. She probably thought he’d laugh along with her, or think she’s all that. But if Bob thought about flushing down Randy’s epilepsy meds, just to see him go in a seizure because it’s ‘funny’. That’s one level of comically evil behavior that he isn’t sure he’ll ever reach.
They landed on the ground, and Sylvia wasn’t holding onto his arm anymore. Bob’s attention went to some huge rabbit some kid got from a prize, and when he looked back she was gone.
He drove home alone that day. Wasn’t in the mood to roam the streets with his buddies or drink himself into a stupor, though he did have one more beer back there. He just thought about that poor junkie Sylvia was banging on the side. If she's that bad while he was behind bars, what's he gonna do when he gets out? He wouldn't be surprised  if she ended up in the newspaper murdered. She's got it coming, that's for damn sure. I know I woulda if I found out 'bout half the things she's been saying about me.
And Bob was right. Not about being murdered, but about everything else. Dallas and her got into an ugly fight when he found out she’s been fuckin’ other dudes behind his back. To the point he was found sobbing by Two-Bit in his room after he refused to leave for hours.
Either way. He got a lot more stories to tell to his buddies.

🐨 Hello hello! So, I turn 18 tomorrow and that is a WEIRD feeling. I suppose, with the time difference, it’s actually already my birthday where you are. I know that from today to tomorrow I’m not actually a whole year older, just a day older, because that’s how time works, but it’s still just A Lot to realize that in 3 hours, I’ll be an adult. At least I’ll be able to vote! That’s a perk.
I finished SoC and am almost done with CK. Both just amazing books. I adore them. The writing is so PRETTY! “He needed to tell her…what? That she was lovely, and brave, and better than anything he deserved? That he was twisted, crooked, wrong, but not so broken that he couldn’t pull himself into some semblance of a man for her. That without meaning to, he’d begun to lean on her, to look for her, to need her around. He needed to thank her for his new hat.” Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh such a good romance, Kanej is. And Inej’s chapters a beautiful too. The one where she’s climbing up the incinerator always gets me.
Have you watched Shadow and Bone? They’ve changed a few too many things for my taste, but the cast is amazing! They all portray their characters super well. My friend and I watched it the other day while making bracelets for the Taylor Swift concert we’re going to in June.
Also, you are not failing at being a lawyer. You are learning to be one, and you are trying to become a good one, and that’s more than a hell of a lot of other people are doing. You have all the intelligence and tenacity and real, genuine GOODNESS inside of you already. You’ll pick up the actual law stuff quickly enough :)
Happy Birthday!! I hope your day and year is full of light, love and a whole lot more adventures <3
The switch from seventeen to eighteen is a lot though. Here it's voting, buying alcohol, for some people giving blood (I'm too anemic and also something else for that though) and just generally being classed as an adult. Like you suddenly form the 18-25 group. You age out of a lot fo child's services. WEIRD.
I must reread at some point- but only once I've read the books I've not yet read because there are so many. I think my mum and sister getting me a Kindle was simultaneously the best and worst thing they ever did. Babel was on a deal a while back so I brought it and once I've read all the hard copy books I want to read I'm going to start it!! But yes, Kanej is everything.
I've started. I'm on episode six of season one, but the problem is that I remember nothing. Also I only care about the Crows. I tried reading Shadow and Bone years ago and I just couldn't get into it. The school librarian thought I'd enjoy Six of Crows though. She was very much right :) I do like watching the edits and the interviews though! Oh I'm so excited to hear about the concert!! What do the bracelets look like?
I'm going to a candlelit concert for my birthday! It's my present to myself. I also keep missing out the l in candle it's very random...
That's very sweet of you to say. I think I'll show my friends. They'll appreciate it just as much as I do <3

SHADOW AND BONE SEASON 2 SPOILERS
My thoughts and opinions 😱. I honestly really really enjoyed it, it’s different but it’s an adaptation of what I already love. Some parts though could’ve definitely been better.
• I know people were skeptical about Patrick but straight away from episode one where he went “You don’t know me? Maybe in profile. ” that was when I knew Nikolai literally was on my screen. He did a great job!
• I think Jack is lovely. Unfortunately I think that he was a bit too much van sunshine and not enough Wylan. He does a wonderful job on the cute parts but Wylan from the books is witty and brave and reckless even, hopefully we get to see that more in a future season 🤞
• SUJAYA OWNS ME IN EPISODE SIX 🧎‍♀️ Zoyas outfit in Shu Han is legendary. Sujaya IS zoya and nobody can tell me otherwise. Zoya is one of my favorite characters and I really enjoy how Sujaya portrays her!
• I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR DAVIDS DEATH 😭. When Genya found the ring I lost it right then and there it was SO SAD.
• I’m very disappointed in how they did Wesper tho 😭. We got absolutely no slow burn, and while Kit and Jack have great chemistry I was hoping we’d get a bit more of that are they? Are they not? That we got in the beginning of soc
• episode four was amazing. I was a bit upset at first that they were using part of the ck plotline but after I watched it I’m not too mad. I really liked how Freddy did that scene with Pekka it really gave off Kaz in the books vibes. Loved it.
• when amita said “and how will you have me?” And that whole monologue it was PERFECT. Her pauses and her expression masterpiece really.
• I was a bit sad about how they did Alina this season. I very much relate to Alina and I really loved her in season 1. This season it felt like her character didn’t really go anywhere, I would’ve liked to see her start out a bit more hesitant and to grow into who she is at the end. They had Alina be really headstrong about what she wants right from the beginning which I get for time sake but still
• Where was the Tamar and Nadia scenes?? 😭 we got like CRUMBS if you could even call it that it was disappointing.
• That new tide maker lady who was like a teachers pet to the darkling was kind of weird imo. I’m assuming that was where Ivan would have been but I saw Julian’s (Fedyor) post on instagram where they decided to leave them out of this season. Which is unfortunate because the whole darklings crew was a bit weird including Vladim the weird Alekmi lol
• Daisy did a wonderful job as Genya. All her scenes were done spectacularly. I applaud
I can’t think of anything else right now and this turned out to be much longer than I thought lol. But stream shadow and bone season 2 so we can get a six of crows spin off and a season 3!!
