i feel like we don't talk about 'this band is back (Reggie's Jam)' enough.

how did it come about. was it a song they already had written, if so why. like, before they died they were at the 'peak of their careers'; why would they write a song about 'coming/being back' when they were still at the top.

this leads to my headcanon/theory:

they literally made it up on the spot. like they telepathically communicated the whole thing. because they were so in-tune with each other when they were alive that they could do that. it's why Luke looks to Alex and Reggie as much as he does. he's wanting to make sure they're picking up what he's putting down. i mean their instruments were so intrinsically part of them they could be summoned at will. so it stands to reason that they could do this with their thoughts/selves too.

the fact that it's parenthetically called 'Reggie's Jam' will always get me feeling some kind of way.

it's been so long since i rewatched the Unsaid Emily episode of JATP but holy, shit does it still hit so fucking hard

when luke's hiding in the bushes outside of his parents' house because he misses them- misses his mother- and regrets the way he ran off, but was too proud to apologize. and maybe too full of guilt and regret to come back before he did what he set out to do.

but he missed her and she missed him and he wrote an entire song about it and his band sang it together and im just 😭😭😭😭

maybe after his band played at the orpheum he would have gone back. maybe he could have gone back and said "look! i did it! im sorry for leaving but i did it! can i come home now?"

maybe that would have been enough to start mending the gap

maybe they would have had a chance to play more than one song, and maybe the second would have been Unsaid Emily, and maybe she would have known. maybe she would have been standing by the door waiting for him to come back.

but he dies, and the song is lost for twenty years, and his mother never knew that he was so sorry or that he even thought about her after running away, not until julie.

he gets the chance to finally say everything he always meant to say to her, he gets to see his mother read his old words and read the love in them.

im nearly sobbing from this scene again it's so fucking good. so powerful.

i love watching jatp interviews. Especially when the interviewer asks abt juke becoming an actual couple and Madison, Charlie and Kenny always explain how Luke and Julie's feelings for each other get to be explored through friendship instead of jumping right into a relationship.

For Luke and Julie being both aware of their feelings and choosing to be stay right where they are and becoming the best of friends, because they want more of each other, they want to be a place of comfort for each other and grow as people. All of it, without the overwhelming pressure of being a couple and changing the dynamics in their band/family, or having that "but this can't last forever" feeling always hovering over them, all the complications with Luke being a ghost and Julie being a lifer, bc they don't know how to fix this. That would eventually tear them apart from the other.

Instead, Julie can deal with her feelings in a comfortable zone where she can take her time and focus on their plans as a band and bond as friends, the same goes for Luke, clearly he likes Julies and knows there's something between them, even with his emotional intelligence of a peanut, he understands that seeking a relationship is not worth it especially when what they already have as friends is so special and important to each of them. They don't need to be dating to do anything for the other, they don't need to be dating to be able to trust each other and have a deep unique connection.
