I really hate 2d purists. No, not 2d animation. Not 2d animators.

2d purists.

The sad thing is it’s gotten to the point that I really cringe hearing any pro-2D sentiment at all. I hate the arguments I agree with because how often they're misused and weaponized by idiots.

Let me make my stance here clear - 2d is NOT appreciated and 3d is used for everything! The layman Karen-mom who doesn’t have an artistic bone in her body looks at stupidsmooth 3D Grubhub ads and assumes quality cause it “looks more real” (aka ‘rendered’). I know as much is true because I literally have a member of my family who told my sister and I that she thinks 3d is better (and also that she “tolerated THOSE movies for us kids”. Touching words. My sister was taking an animation course by the way). Combined that with the studios either using 2D for cheap stuff or finding good 2d animation too “costly”, I get it and I’m not even any animator. I'm just a worm an illustrator.

but holy HELL -

There’s a backlash from the artistic community that's it's own kind of insufferable and deserve to be addressed.

“(insert2Danimatedfilm) is better BECAUSE it's 2D!”

followed by: "Animation is a visual medium and the quality of the art affects how much the story means !!!!”

Yes. Totally. Animation is a visual medium and the look and style is important. Sadly, people use this excuse to really obnoxious ends, insisting that design being pretty is '' everything ''. When you treat a movie more as a special effects demo I get why you talk about the artistry at hand; but I’m sorry, visuals are not the only thing important and it’s why I’m also getting sick of the sameElsafacesyndrome rants too! There’s this attitude that's reads as "but it LOOKS better fromaproductionimage/teasertrailerwhichapparentlyisindicativeof all themovieactuallyis so it MUST BE better".

-“3D should only be used to make things look realistic!”

I think I know the logic this criticism is made in response to, and that’s the Sony + Illumination films which look just as good in 2D as they do in three dimensions. I know it feels like people are twisting this medium to try and make it like a classic cartoon when by all means people can and would love a classic cartoon being a classic cartoon. That I get- From the unsung 2D animator’s perspective, that’s more than valid !

But it’s a huuuuuuge slap in the face to 3d in saying it should only be used for "realistic animation" because

1: It’s not like realistic animation could age badly or look uncanny in the next few years. It's almost like technology is constantly improving, which I guess 2d animation never did and it was always the same technique and quality as every film that came after it.

2: The industry does treat 3d as a magic-moneymaker for this reason. Just listen to these people call the 2019 LION KING “live action” as if they’re embarrassed to call it animation. It IS animation! It would be impressive if you acknowledged that what it is, but like the CATS, you basically are treating it as just a neato tool to better your live action and not it's own artform - which it is!

3: By this “three-deeonly gud when real liek in da toystories” non-logic I guess 2d should ONLY be for flowyflowy SPACE JAM cartoons and maybe some Disney*. Just that though. You can’t do anything more with 2d. It’s never supposed to be realistic I guess. Good thing Richard Williams only did 'toons' and just toons that’s why we need 3d in the world I guess.

Wait no - that’s stupid.

"I HAVE to see the “Land Before Time 14″ when it comes out! I mean it’s a 2D animated film!"

Lost in the aether that is Youtube comment chains removed from kid's videos is a stream of this very VERY stupid argument supporting the buying of the 14th LAND BEFORE TIME film because it’s supporting 2D. My sister and I can be found on that chain arguing against this stupidity. All you have is my word, but trust me: it really did happen.

I’m sorry but...no.

Unless you have a friend or a family member who worked on these movies there’s no reason to see this and ESPECIALLY no reason to insist it’s a win for the 2D community if you buy up this crap - and I'm not judging if you do like it, but come on! LAND BEFORE TIME 14 isn't where your money should go if you really like this medium.

What’s so infuriating about this argument is you can tell it’s made by nonanimators. Real animators will tell you to support their movies cause they want some respect for their artform which is why there’s such a push from the PRINCESS AND THE FROGcrowd that you SEE and LOVE every 2d thing out there, regardless of how good it is because any recognition for it is k i n d o f what they're after!

Kiddy sequel schlock isn’t even in the same ballpark as KLAUS or WOLFWALKERS; these films DID have very limited theatrical runs (Klaus so it could be nominated; Wolfwalkers in places where theaters opened up after Covid) and should have been supported because they were labors of love made by people who love animation.

As other people have already pointed out, one of the reasons for the lack of interest in 2000sera2D animation is that the only films released alongside critical+financial 3D hits were cheaper 2D films that either coincided with daytime tv shows or should have been just direct-to-video. It’s not to say art couldn’t come out of these flicks, but dayum if it wasn’t abused as much as the texture software that era's CG used... Point being, should the world ever go back to normal: If you hear about an out-of-town showing an acclaimed 2D animated film, make time to trek out and see THAT!

Don’t give your money to see yet another made-for-tv movie on the big screen because all that tells the studio is: “yeah 2d IS cheap and only good for cheap stuff let’s just keep it cheap. Only 3d is important 8D 8D 8D !!!"

“I don’t understand how it works” and “it’s just some computer rendering” is the exact same wave of logic the people who prefer cgi use.

The plebian Karen I mentioned earlier? She understands the basics of 2D animation as much as you did from one of those cruddy flash classes you took in middle-school. She 'understands' the basics cuz she watched how it was made on the DVD features or maybe back on the WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY. To her, the illusion is broken and she’s not impressed by 'just some drawings on paper'. You, an animator, know the process is more complicated and is intrigued by knowing how it’s made - not bored or disinterested -

Neither you nor Aunt Karen have really good cg-animation software at your house and unless you ARE a 3D animator you probably DON’T know all the ins-and-outs of how these movies are modeled, rendered, and animated.

Aunt Karen is bedazzled by them cause she doesn’t know how it works and the technical aspect makes her brain hurt so it might as well be magic and she can feel like a cool kid sharing Minion-memes. Aunt Karen is the nonartistic type who just wants to feel safe. You're not. You want to feel challenged.

I get it: you’re pissed off cause you’re in a field no one, including Aunt Karen, appreciates; told to work in cg which it's an artform you didn’t devote your life to and told to learn it cause THIS style sells! 3D is everywhere and is starting to look like 'garbage' even if you don’t animate 3D models yourself you just KNOW, I guess. Besides, you know all there is to know about 2d!! You know all there is to possibly know about this artform and have to fight this 'war' against "r e a l" animation! And I mean even when 3d software is there to use, it's not like you can actually make anything worth while in it, especially not anything that transcends the medium. Right Worthikids?

“PRINCESS AND THE FROG is-”

There’s a reason I can’t say I truly like PRINCESS AND THE FROG even though it's not even a bad movie! Like, stop reading this and watch PATF if you haven't it's good. It's my 'FROZEN', in that; I see a lot of potential in it I just think it needs some serious rewriting and that bugs me. Always have felt that way, tbh.

I dislike this movie because the response from the animation community seems to be it was perfect and the Academy was just Pixar-crazy with UP ((ftr, the Academy IS Pixar’s bitch and I personally advocate a sequel be made to WAKING SLEEPING BEAUTY about Mike Eisner’s sabotage of the 2D department at Disney which is still in place now!- but that’s a story for another day)). I’m sorry but UP was just a better story. So was CORALINE. So was FANTASTIC MR. FOX. Honest to god it feels like poor PATF is brought up as just a talking point and never for it's own worth as a labor of love - which it was! I'd like to honestly know: had PRINCESS AND THE FROG come out now and been cg if it would have even half the defenders for it because now it doesn't "look" like how a Disney movie "should" look...

If you like PatF more than the currant Disney lineup because of it's culture, it's music, it's feminism, it's black representation? Awesome. Great. TANGLED, FROZEN, and MOANA? Yeah. Sure. But um, e x c u s e y o u- WRECK IT RALPH sooooo doesn’t work in 2d! It could have used different between the various worlds but it’s about hopping through different video games. I’m also of the opinion that ZOOTOPIA and BIG HERO 6 are fine the way they are. Their 3d is awesome.

The latest fairy tale Disney films are really big on their place alongside the 2D canon esp in marketing. They keep trying to mimic 2D to varying results though I don't think it works as well as the movie's I'd previously mentioned. Me personally, I would love a mix of 3D and 2D technology, like if the backgrounds in FROZEN still got to be 3D but the characters were handdrawn and shaded ala KLAUS ((sweet sigh)). But even then are they truly unwatchable just based on how they're animated to you?

MOANA would have been incredible in 2D but for the record - I don't think it feels out of place in it's style. It reminds me more of a Pixar movie with the heart of a Disney classic which is it's own just as good.

Actually, if we’re talking animation in film, stop motion is the earliest form of animation. The stop motion animated THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED and TALE OF THE FOX predate Disney’s SNOW WHITE. And yes: stop-motion IS still a form of animation even if it’s a serious of pictures taken of real life things and not drawings, so don’t you dare come at me with the "but that's not animated"/"Technically it’s LIVE ACTION" crap or I’ll envoke the spirit of Sandman to get you at night.

“Every animated film would look better in 2D! Even PIXAR would look better in 2D!”

Again, Stop Motion.

No, I mean it.

Lemme ask: Would ISLE OF DOGS or FANTASTIC MR. FOX carry any of the same effect if they were generic 90s toons? I know NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS wouldn’t. Christ, don’t even get me started on Svankmajer!

Sometimes the problem is that a movie is envisioned with a specific artform in mind. Pixar started out with toys and bugs for a reason and that’s cuz they were always gonna be a 3d studio and they needed to first overcome the placisity of the models. Over the years they’ve gotten really good at effects and blending unrealistic proportions with real textures (and also not so much- ONWARD and THE GOOD DINOSAUR really needed some different character designs and yeah, I do think would have looked better with a 2d artstyle, but not the ones they had in their films. THE GOOD DINOSAUR needed more realistic-speculative looking dinos and ONWARD needed a grittier HEAVY METAL/BLACK CAULDRON appeal to its designs.) My point being that the problems with these movies aren’t even inherently the animation as much as it is a problem of style. As someone who runs a group speculating different styles and designs for movies and tv shows I’m all for envisioning a 2D ZOOTOPIA or Bluth-inspired FNAF. That’s amazing!

But that’s also the talk of fan artists and nerds and not the professional artists working on visualizing their stories!!

Since I ate, slept, and breathed NIGHTMARE in my youth I’ll use it as an example: All the concept art ever done for TNBC was on paper and 2D was used in the final film. However, even when Tim Burton was thinking of making it just a tv special it was always going to be stop-motion. NIGHTMARE’s puppet cast do work very well in two dimensions, believe me, but the film was made as a love letter to Rankin/Bass and the art form of stop-motion. Skipping to another Henry Selick-helmed project (haha), JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH was also always envisioned as a multimedia film to give it a truly dream-like atmosphere. If you know anything about Henry Selick you’ll know he’s 1) a perfectionist, and 2) loves mixed media and different types of animation and puppetry at once. That’s why he was the perfect pick to direct TNBC at the time, why JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH and CORALINE are so beautiful and why MOONGIRL, his only fully 3d film, doesn’t have the same appeal.

As for what films I couldn’t imagine NOT being 3D? Probably; 9, Padak, Next Gen, Soul, Finding Nemo, the Toy Story films, Wreck-it-Ralph (as previously mentioned), Wall.E, Waltz with Bashir, Robots, Inside Out, Arthur Christmas, The Painting, Happy Feet, Shrek, Enter the Spiderverse, Megamind… just naming a few here.

“I want a traditionally animated film [and by that I mean a 90s-Disney/Don Bluth looking movie] of ‘x'-popular live action/stage thing!”

Okay I’m cheating a bit but it’s my blog and so I’m gonna stick this one in because it’s related.

When I see musings about wanting live-action or CGI shiz to be in 2d again a lot of the time this argument actually boils down to " I want this to look like a 90s Didney movie ". Or, if it’s about animals - " I want it to look like a Don Bluth film! "

Like...there ARE other styles of animation out there...you know that right?

Frack, Disney themselves tried different styles throughout the 90s it’s just that the peak of the Disney renaissance films (LITTLE MERMAID, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, ALADDIN, THE LION KING) and the many imitators that followed tended to have the same look to them where only film/animation nerds kept watching into the era that was TARZAN, HERCULES, and ATLANTIS along with the kids. Aunt Karen wasn't singing Part of your World in the carride with you every day.

The Don Bluth argument is especially irritating because...what exact feeling do you WANT from a movie if it looked Bluthish? Each of the four ‘quintessential’ Bluth movies (NIMH, AMERICAN TAIL, LBT, and ALL DOGS) have such a different feel to them that’s complimented by that style; SECRET OF NIMH is a drama about wild animals trying to understand humans; LAND BEFORE TIME is even more squarely about an animal’s perspective as there’s literally no humans around; AMERICAN TAIL uses animals stowing away on the ship to tell a story about refugees; and ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN is ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN.

What the frack are you even asking for with that because I think there’s a certain flavor to the Bluth-styled oeuvre as well as the 90s Disney catalogue that would clash too much stylistically with some films.

Also come on! Like some Bluthian-style 2d would really fix THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS or SCOOB!, bite me.

I think this fixation solely on these two hand drawn styles and nothing else is based on nostalgia goggles, refusing to step outside the norm and discover different films and feelings than Disney and Bluth, and just preference. Goin back to NIGHTMARE there will always be a special place in my heart for Henry Selick’s stop motion, but I couldn’t imagine CHICKEN RUN or ANOMALISA in it's unique style.

Also I’m tired of every time there’s a "lets make an animatic to ‘x’ musical theater song" it’s reliably just Disneyesque or realistic. WHY envision an animated version of the show at all if it doesn’t have A STYLE to it??!?! I’m sorry but 90s-Disney does NOT fit CABARET!

“3D is so CHEAP now! Why can’t they just do 2D again?”

I think - on the cusp of the 2020s and the Grubhub hatedom, there ARE changing times ahead for 3d and 2d. The general public are starting to get tired of the same looking 3d films and wanting some 2d back, but they don’t have the best resources or opinions on animation to know what it is they want. Meanwhile, the animation community + industry is trying to figure out what to do and you have a lot of turmoil between the monopoly that is the industry, the high standards of the artists, and the mixed wants of the animation fanbase deciding what art needs to be.

It’s a tough business. And in the spirit of that tough business - maybe DON’T act like the means of a film’s production is solely your control, that you know best, and know definitively what the artists should have done....cuz you don't. Sorry my fellow criticalfanomanalysist-folks we DON'T and in an age of standom where fans and critics think it's okay to hackle indie animation studios about not getting their pitched cartoon out fast enough - we need to reserve these discussions to our circles and not treat them as gospel.

3d animation and 2d animation have to share this world. Stop acting like they’re either interchangeable in terms of budget, means of production, or artistry or that one has to be superior to the other.

The industry already says one art form is better (spoiler: it’s always live-action), we don’t need anymore of this purist garbage. Just stick to what you like while trying new things on the side. Be critical while also being compassionate. And remember:

─ace stumbles across a youtube channel that he finds absolutely entertaining. he's never realized just how much positive impact you've made on his life just by simply existing and making videos. that is, until you decide to take a small hiatus. though, fate or not, during your break, ace finds you entering the cafe he works at.

chapter zero; prologue.

A break.

That was what you needed.

Let's be real, Being a Youtuber is cool and all. I mean, working from home while still doing whatever the hell you want and making money off of it?? An absolute dream.

But sometimes, It gets really frustrating and overwhelming from all the snarky remarks people leave in your comment section on every single one of your videos they can get their hands on.

Waking up and checking your comments? The first thing you see is a hate comment. Followed by other hate comments under it.

You get a rare comment from a fan that actually comments a heart-warming motivation? The replies under the said comment were harsh. Like, real harsh.

It's just, hate. Hate everywhere.

You don’t even know why they kept coming.

You didn’t do anything wrong nor said anything offensive.

Hence, that's why you decided to take a time off of social media for a bit. (Youtube included)

You uploaded a video explaining that you would be in a small hiatus until the situation calms down a bit.

The comment section was oddly not filled with any hate comments.

Which made you more suspicious.

But you still take a break anyways.

You really needed it.

Unbeknownst to you, somewhere in the world, a certain freckled, raven haired, film major college student was bummed out when he heard you were taking a break.

He loved your videos.

The humor in it was always hilarious that he often rewatches your videos whenever he feels down. In other words, For comfort.

Hell, he even showed his brothers your videos and they ended up liking your content too, leading to a “(Your Channel Name) Saturday Binge watch episode” as Luffy, (his little brother), would call it.

Like the name, Every saturday, the self-proclaimed siblings would binge watch your videos in the living room until midnight. Or in some cases, even way later than that. (Ahem, cue the sibling bonding 101)

But it’s okay.

He understands why you needed to take a break.

Social media can be a bit overwhelming sometimes.

God who knows how many times Ace has gotten into an online verbal fight when he finds hate comments in your videos.

He went all out.

Thanks to his oh so ‘colorful’ vocabulary he learned a while back when he was still in an orphanage that was owned by Curly Dadan, he managed to fire them back with the same sarcasticness that made them shut up.

Ace felt g o o d .

Like, real good.

Though, he needs to watch out for the time though. He slept at 2 AM that day and almost missed his class.

But it was worth it. (Atleast to him)

Ace works at a cafe near his college, as a barista. Nothing too special but hey, he needed to pay for his college funds somehow.

A normal day at work for Ace was always very uneventful.

Hence, that's why he did n o t expect you.

YOU, his favorite youtuber to enter the cafe he was working a shift at.

Hellooo?? Was he dreaming?? Is that really you?? IN THE FLESH?!?@R$*#RY@*

He stood there.

Completely frozen.

Oblivious to everything but you.

Time seemed to freeze for him when you walked inside.

All he could focus on was how your (h/l) (h/c) hair bounced when you walked, your (e/c) orbs glistening under the sunlight that went through the windows, and just how you walked in with a posture that gives off a strict but relaxed vibe.

He could not stop looking at you, yea you were pretty but that was when he saw you on the screen.

He thought a person couldn't get prettier but oh that idea was thrown out the window when you walked in.

How can?? Someone be more gorgeous in the flesh hello??

Was this allowed??

Ace thought he was about to get a heart attack from you.

Oh god just how can one be so pretty??

He doesn't believe in gods but thank heavens to the gods up there that made you, because oh my god you were just a sight for sore eyes for him.

He also probably looked hella creepy just standing there in front of his register, gawking at you.

Ace doesn't notice you already being in front of the register he was standing in before you said something along the lines of :

“━You there━?”

Huh?

Oh.

He needed to get himself together.

He knows you hate it when people treat you like some sort of celebrity and you just want your fans to treat you like any other human beings.

So he’s going to do just that.

Ace assumes you’re on your break at the moment so he will not make you feel uncomfortable in any way shape or form.

He’s going to treat you like any other customers.

Just.. with a bit more enthusiasm (I mean c'mon man)

“Ah! Sorry there, pardon me for my rudeness ma’am. Welcome to Ivory Blue Cafe! How may I assist a beautiful lady like you this lovely evening?”

A laugh.

He heard a laugh.

Your laugh to be specific.

“OH!━Pfft━aha━” You cleared your throat.

“S-Sorry about that! I didn't mean to lau━”

“Nonono! It's alright, no need to apologize. Actually, I think I need to thank the heavens for that one because oh boy i’ve been blessed by your laughter” Ace responds, cutting through your apology while he gives you a sheepish smile.

This time, it was your turn to gawk at him.

It wasn't very long til heat makes its way over to your cheeks, lightly blushing at Ace’s words but smoothly brushing it off with a light chuckle.

“━Good lord i did NOT expect that━Pfft!━ Sorry sorry. Why thank you, i’m flattered you think my laughter is a blessing” You responded as a small smile forms on your face.

Ace blushed, making his freckles on his cheeks very visible.

He did not think of anything when he said any of that to you, it was like.. The words just seem to unconsciously escape his mouth.

He was embarrassed, sure, but he made you laugh.

So that was good.

“Well, that aside. What can i get you madam?” Ace smoothly says.

“Ah!━About that, hold on… I haven't decided yet..” You mumbled but it was loud enough for Ace to hear. You unconsciously make a pouting face while you speed-read over the menus above.

God you were so cute.

Ace just wanted to squish your cheeks right there and the━

NO! He needs to be professional for now, Ace cant afford to embarrass himself (as if he didn't already do that) in front of his favorite youtuber.

Shaking his head softly, he patiently waits for your order.

“I’d like an Espresso Macchiato please.” You smiled.

“You got it! Please wait patiently as I make your order!~” Ace says as he prints your receipt, smoothly handing it over to you.

“Here’s your receipt. Please hold on to it til I'm done making your order and call your name.”

“Ah wait, speaking of name’s. May I know yours? I’ll be calling the said name when the drink is done so you can go grab it and pay at the front register.” Ace says as he smiles reassuringly at you.

“...(Y/N). Please note it as (Y/N)!” You smiled back at him.

Oh god he was about to faint right there, but NO. He needs to do this, he's a man. He can handle this.

“Alright Lady (Y/N) please take a seat anywhere and make yourself comfortable as i make your order! I’ll be right back madam”

And with that, Ace ZOOMS to the brewing area, making an attempt to calm his racing heart down but failing miserably.

He watches you from the side of his eyes as you take a seat near one of the windows, waiting patiently for your drink to be done.

Realizing something, Ace forgot to ask whether you want it to go or to drink here.

SHIT

But,,, Judging by your appearance, you’d probably want it to go so he’ll take that chance.

5 minutes go by and he’s done with your drink.

Slowly walking up to the register, Ace says your name.

“Espresso Macchiato for Lady (Y/N)?” He half-yelled.

“Here!━ Thank you so much!” You say as you reached your hand over to grab your drink.

“No problem! Here you go madam”

“Oh! How’d you know I wanted it to go?”

“Instincts i guess, i was right, weren't i?” Ace grinned

“Well then, you have very accurate instincts Mr…”

“Oh! Ace. The name’s Ace.”

“Mr. Ace” You smiled, grabbing your wallet and pulling a 50 dollar bill, handing it over to him to take.

“Wha━ Nono! That's way too much!” Ace widen his eyes

“Take it as a tip for being welcoming and friendly haha!” You chuckle, shoving the bill to his chest and letting it go once you see his hands coming to grab it.

“Have a good evening Ace-san! Thank you for your assistance!” You grinned.

And with that, you were gone.

Out the door like a flash.

Ace stood there, once again shocked.

Not noticing, his face formed a shit eating grin. No. A Wide grin.

He’s going to remember this day for the rest of his life, no doubt about it.

Shaking his head, still smiling, he gathers himself back as he takes the next customer’s orders.

The Spirit Board

A horror story about Amanda's and Serina's experience with an ouija board.

August 12th, 7:38 p.m.

Twelve hours before launch.

Amanda had opened a box from the storage, and she found a wooden board with a triangle-like wooden shaped thing with a hole near the tip, and it had a "Yes" and a "No" and all of the letters of the alphabet. It also had numbers in this order; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0

Amanda immediately recognized it. It was an ouija board. She had always wanted one of those, but her father, Reginald, never let her get one because he had Phasmophobia. Amanda's best friend, Serina, had also wanted an ouija board. But she had never gotten one either. But, why was there an ouija board here? Were her fathers trying to hide it from her? Well, it was no longer hidden. Amanda had found it.

Amanda quickly grabbed the wooden board and swiftly dashed to her part of the living quarters, and hid the board. She had to tell Serina about it so they could play with it in secret.

"Serina!" Amanda called after finding her in the cafeteria.

Serina turned. "Amanda! Hey! What do you need?"

"Come here for a second." Amanda beckoned.

Serina swung herself over the side of the seat, and approached her best friend. Serina had strawberry blonde hair and a light blue-minty green ombre colored top hat, along with a pink ribbon and bow going across the brim. Amanda had long red-brown hair that was held up in a ponytail, and she wore a cream colored top hat with smoky gray fingerless gloves.

"What?" Serina asked in a hushed voice.

"So, I was looking through boxes in the storage, and I found an ouija board. I hid it in my room, so nobody knows about it yet. I was thinking, do you want to get up in the middle of the night and play with it?" Amanda explained excitedly.

"Oh! So it was being hidden from you?" Serina asked. "Yeah! Sounds fun, what time?"

"One a.m. sound good?" Amanda suggested.

"Sounds like a plan." Serina nodded. "Where?"

"I was thinking in the portrait hall? Since that's the place which would probably have the most spirits." Amanda told her thinking.

"Yeah! I like that." Serina nodded in agreement. "I have candles."

"Awesome! It will probably keep the ghosts happy. I have a lighter."

"Perfect. I can't wait!"

Five hours later, August 13th, 12:40 a.m.

Seven hours until launch.

Amanda set her phone down, and got herself back into her normal clothes, trying to keep her movements swift and silent. She grabbed her lighter and the hidden ouija board.

She creeped out of her room, and quickly got out of the living quarters without being seen.

She made it to the cafeteria successfully without being spotted.

She made herself and Serina some coffee to help them stay awake. She put sugar and cream in Serina's, and Amanda just had black coffee, because she really liked bitter things.

She walked over to the portrait hall and set the two cups full of hot liquid on the table, taking a sip of her own coffee. It was hot and bitter, just the way she liked it.

Ten minutes later, 12:55 a.m.

Serina had arrived with the candles. "Hey." She quietly greeted.

"Hi." Amanda greeted back, also trying to keep her voice hushed. "I got us some coffee to help us stay awake. Your's is right there." She pointed to her friend's coffee.

"That's thoughtful of you." Serina said, taking a small drink of her coffee.

"Thanks." Amanda nodded. "Here, place the candles on each corner of the ouija board and I'll light them. Then we can start."

Serina placed the candles on each corner, and Amanda whipped out her lighter. She flicked it on as the bright scarlet-golden flame sparked to life. She touched it to the wick of the candles, and they were lit.

Amanda flicked off her lighter and placed it on the edge of the table. "This is gonna be spooky, but I'm excited."

"I agree." Serina nodded. "Well? Let's start."

"Okay." Amanda took a deep breath. "Is there a spirit here?"

They waited for a response.

...

The triangle at the top of the board moved to the left. 'Yes'

Amanda and Serina jumped in startlement and excitement.

"Oh my gosh, that's so cool! I knew ghosts were real!" Amanda kept her voice hushed, yet got excited.

"What's your name?" Serina asked. "I'm Serina, and this is Amanda."

' '

The board didn't do anything.

"I don't think their gonna respo-" Amanda began when the triangle began to move again.

'S-I-R-W-I-L-F-O-R-D-4' The ouija board spelt out.

"Woah!" Amanda still managed to keep her voice silent. "My dad told me about Wilford before."

"Former Toppat leader, right?" Serina asked another question.

'Yes' The wooden board answered.

"Will you hurt us?" Amanda was trying to keep herself and Serina safe.

'P-R-O-B-A-B-L-Y-N-O-T'

"Thank god." Serina sighed in relief.

"How did you die?" Amanda was probably going to pester him with questions like a teenage fangirl.

Hey, she and Serina are both teenagers.

'M-U-R-D-E-R'

Amanda and Serina got less excited.

"That's kinda dark." Serina commented. "Wasn't he a good leader?"

"Yeah, I think that's what I was told." Amanda nodded. "He was probably killed for the position."

"Who killed you?" Serina was curious.

' '

"Are they still alive?"

' '

Serina was silent, and she glanced at Amanda, whom was drinking some of her coffee.

"That's kinda scary... He didn't answer." Serina grabbed her coffee as Amanda set her's down.

The candles flickered out.

"Oh gosh, I'm getting scared." Serina said as Amanda set down her cup of coffee and used her lighter to re-light the candles.

"Yeah, that's kinda creepy." Amanda agreed, placing her lighter back down.

"Wilford, you still there?" Amanda changed the subject.

'No'

"Oh, cool! New spirit!" Serina was interested. "What are your preferred pronouns?"

'H-E'

"Alright then."

"What's your name?" Serina went back to pestering the spirits with questions.

'T-E-R-R-E-N-C-E'

Amanda glanced at all of the portraits. "Terrence Suave?"

'Yes'

"Isn't he the leader who was super reckless and only cared for himself? The one who hurt my dad? Both of them?" Amanda asked. "I haven't met him, but I don't like him."

"Are you going to hurt us?" Serina asked with hesitance.

...

' '

Amanda and Serina exchanged glances.

"That's not a good sign." Amanda commented.

Serina took a drink of her coffee, then placed it back down on the table. "I hope he doesn't hurt us."

"Me neither." Amanda looked back at the ouija board. "How did you die?"

'O-V-E-R-T-H-R-O-W-N'

"I should've guessed that." Amanda told herself.

"Where are you?" Serina then asked.

' '

'N-E-A-R'

"Amanda, I'm scared." Serina took a step closer to her friend.

"Me too."

Something creaked.

Amanda jumped in startlement and looked around cautiously. "Maybe this wasn't a good idea..."

"Should I go get dad?" Serina gazed up at Amanda.

"No, they would be furious." Amanda shook her head, reaching for her almost empty cup of coffee.

The two girls heard footsteps.

"I don't like this..." Serina whispered.

Amanda blew out the candles and set down her cup of coffee. "Quick, hide. Under the table."

They crawled and hid under the table, and sat silently, terrified.

The footsteps came to an end, and there was a sound which sounded like a door closing.

It was silent for a few more moments.

"I think we're safe." Amanda whispered. She crawled out from under the table and snatched her lighter, flicking it on and observing the room. "Yeah, we're good." She turned and lit the candles.

Serina emerged from under the table and faced the ouija board again. "Was that you?"

'Yes'

Amanda and Serina exchanged glances again.

"Change of subject, uh... Who killed you?" Amanda asked.

'R-E-G-I-N-A-L-D'

"Dad killed you?"

'Yes'

"You kind of deserved it after what I heard you did. I heard you're transphobic." Amanda scoffed.

The candles lights flickered out.

Amanda sighed and reached for her lighter again, while Serina was looking around nervously.

They heard what sounded like an adult male heavily breathing.

"What is that!?" Serina asked.

"I don't know, under the table again!"

They slipped themselves under the table, in the darkness.

The breathing got a bit heavier, and Amanda flicked on her lighter, looking around.

"Amandaaa, I don't like this..." Serina sounded terrified. "Should we go back to bed?"

"No, the spirit would follow us, and we'd be in huge trouble. All of us, most likely. Dad killed Terrence! What do you think he'd do to him!?" Amanda didn't wait for Serina to answer. "He'd hurt or even kill him! There's no way I'm letting a spirit kill dad!"

"Fair point." Serina admit.

The heavy breathing stopped, and there was another creak.

Amanda and Serina didn't dare to move for a few moments.

"I think we're okay." Amanda pulled herself out from under the table, Serina following behind her.

Amanda lit the candles again and set her lighter down.

"Don't hurt us. Or anyone. We don't want to be guilty for any deaths." Amanda begged. "Please."

"Are you just trying to scare us? Or are you going to do something?"

'M-A-Y-B-E'

"That doesn't help!"

Serina finished a long sip of her coffee. "Well... Are there any other spirits here other than you and Wilford?"

'Yes'

"Okay... Who?"

'R-E-Y-N-A-L-D-O' 'R-A-N-D-Y' 'J-A-Q-U-E-S'

"I knew the portrait hall would be crowded with the leaders spirits." Amanda confidently told her best friend.

"Yeah, that's most likely." Serina nodded. "But do you think we should do this in the airship? We might get different spirits."

"Yeah." Amanda told Serina. "But that's gonna be tricky since we'll be in space."

"Yeah, true." Serina nodded. "We might have use Supreme Dominance ourselves."

There were more footsteps.

Something moaned.

Amanda drew her glock and pointed it at the direction it came from. "Who's there!?"

No response.

...

"Show yourself!"

...

Amanda lowered her gun. "Huh." She hooked it back onto her belt and turned back to the ouija board.

"Was that you?" Amanda asked.

'No'

"... Okay." Amanda was hesitant.

Serina glanced at her, the back at the ouija board.

"Has there been any female leaders before?" She asked a random question.

'No'

"Oh." Serina glanced at Amanda. "You'll most likely be the first, Amanda. I'm sure you'll be a great leader, too."

Amanda didn't want to be the next leader. "Thanks." She said sheepishly.

"Well... What other creepy stuff do you think is gonna happen?" Serina asked.

The ouija board started to move out of the corner of their eyes.

'W-E-W-I-L-L-M-E-E-T'

"What!?" Serina gasped.

The candles flickered out, and there were more footsteps.

Amanda drew her gun and reached for her lighter. She lit the candles again.

The two girls ducked under the table again. The candles were extinguished yet again.

"Oh my god, we're gonna die..." Serina whispered.

"No, we're not." Amanda reassured. "Their spirits, they can't hurt us. They don't have physical forms. They can only scare us."

Serina didn't respond.

"Serina?"

"Yeah? I'm here."

"Oh, okay. You had me worried for a second."

"..."

They eagerly waited for something to happen, or get the all clear sign.

The footsteps got louder, until they stopped. And then there was the heavy breathing again.

"I don't like this..." Amanda whispered.

"Me neither, I'm horrified."

"I'm gonna have nightmares for the next three weeks..."

They stayed silent, and the breathing got louder.

"You're hearing this, right?" Amanda wanted to confirm.

"Yes." Serina replied. "It's creepy."

Amanda sighed. "I'm sorry, Serina. We shouldn't have done this. I shouldn't have suggested it. I should've just left the ouija board alone where I found it."

"No, you had no idea this would happen." Serina shook her head. "And neither did I. If I knew, I wouldn't have agreed to it."

"... Right."

"..."

"COPPERBOTTOM. SVENSSON." Something with a very intimidating voice spoke.

Amanda and Serina jumped in startlement, and Amanda flicked her lighter on.

There was a pitch black humanoid shape with what looked like it had a top hat on, and it had white glowing eyes. It had freaky long shaped hands, and it reached for Amanda.

They two girls let out a blood curling shriek just before they went unconscious.
