Recent commenters remarked on something I included in a fic, about the underlying reasons that Yue Qingyuan never tells Shen Qingqiu the truth, and why Shen Qingqiu never defends himself against false accusations. And the thing about that is that I think it comes from the same place. I think it's just a demonstration of the adage that the coping mechanisms that help you survive don't always help you thrive.
Because YQY and SQQ share the same trauma that causes them to be like this, frustratingly silent when it comes to speaking in their own defense. They both spent the entirety of their formative years being so completely under the power of other people, that they must have inevitably learned at some point that trying to defend themselves would be not only pointless, but probably invite even greater punishment from their masters.
We can see this most clearly with SQQ, because we know the kind of miserable life he had as a slave and then later as Wu Yanzi's accomplice/apprentice, so I think he gets more sympathy than YQY. But YQY was also a street urchin, was also a slave, and even after he joined Cang Qiong, it doesn't seem like he got a lot support or sympathy. He was imprisoned in a cave for a whole year, and that's like... obviously not something you do to a child you genuinely care for.
So being at the mercy of other people, all SQQ and YQY could do for the most part was just mitigate the amount of suffering they brought down on themselves. Endure and try not to provoke the people abusing them into coming down on them even harder.
But the thing is that both SQQ and YQY both developed this, like, survival instinct where any time they have an opportunity to defend or explain themselves, there's a blaring alarm in their brain that goes 'DANGER DANGER' stopping them from even considering it. And I doubt they're even aware of it, I doubt if you asked them they'd even be able to articulate why they stay silent even when it's to their detriment. It's become steeped into their personality that it just feels like the natural reaction to them. If they spoke they'd just make it worse.
So, I don't really feel the same anger or frustration at YQY for never telling SQQ the truth. I think on some level, he might have genuinely felt that explaining himself would make everything much worse.

Yue Qingyuan's trauma explains so much of his...everything, to me.
But I often come across people wondering why he didn't just tell Shen Jiu the truth. So here are the parts of the book that make me think trauma played a role in his silence.
From the scene where they first reunite:
Yue Qingyuan looked excited, his face flushed as he prepared to speak. But Shen Jiu opened fire first. “You joined Cang Qiong Mountain?” Shen Jiu couldn’t tell what Yue Qingyuan was thinking, but the excitement on his face faded a little. Indeed, his complexion paled. “You’ve become Qiong Ding Peak’s head disciple? Not bad,” said Shen Jiu. “Why didn’t you come back to look for me?” “I…” Shen Jiu waited for some time, but the next words never came. So he said, “Why aren’t you saying anything? I’m still waiting. I’ve already waited so many years, after all. Waiting a little longer will be nothing.” But how could Yue Qingyuan say anything? Shen Jiu crossed his arms. Finally, his waiting was rewarded with Yue Qingyuan’s quiet words: “Sorry. It’s Qi-ge who let you down.”
From the scene in the Lingxi Caves, where YQY helps SQQ through a qi deviation:
Shen Qingqiu suddenly felt that something was off about the hand Yue Qingyuan had on his back. Alarmed, he said, “What’s wrong?” It was a long moment before Yue Qingyuan replied. “Nothing.” Shen Qingqiu shut up. He couldn’t see Yue Qingyuan’s expression where he stood behind him, but he could feel the hand passing him spiritual energy, and how it trembled slightly.
YQY is a calm and composed sort of guy, so I interpret these subtle emotional cues (his face paling, his hands shaking, his long moments of silence) as signs of internal distress whenever he has to remember his qi deviation.
SQQ is also the one who tends to disengage from conversations with YQY. SQQ removing himself from stressful situations is...far from the worst coping mechanism found in Scum Villain, to be fair. His distrust towards YQY is understandable from his perspective.
But still, it makes it difficult for them to have deep and personal conversations.
There's also this part of YQY's confession to Shen Yuan, and I think it shows some insight into his thought process:
“Just let me finish speaking, this one time,” Yue Qingyuan said resolutely. “As you always say, ‘sorry’ is nothing but an empty word, completely useless. I also never explained myself, but today I must let you hear, not to ask for your forgiveness or sympathy, but because if I don’t say it now…it will be too late.”
To me, the bit about "forgiveness" and "sympathy" implies that YQY is worried that revealing the truth is a selfish impulse. He doesn't want to confess the truth if it just means he's begging for pity...because he doesn't think he deserves pity.

SVSSS au/fanfic idea
The Scum Villain' Twin is the Grandmaster of Beast Cultivation
Part 1: Pre-cannon
In this AU, Shen Yuan is not a NEET, but someone who works with wild animals (zookeeper, tamer/trainer, vet, etc) and is very passionate about his job.
He still is a huge (anti)fan of PIDW and still dies cursing the novel tho.
In this AU, however, he is transmigrated into Shen Jiu's twin sibling who was supposed to die of a mysterious illness in the original (and since Airplane didn't write about the villain's backstory into the original, Shen Yuan has no idea what's going on).
Shen Yuan, without a system, decides to simply try to navigate this weird world and see what happens.
At some point, Shen Jiu and his twin try to escape the Qius by running into a forest. At some point they end up separating and SJ is captured back and they are sure that the weak and frail SY is dead, being eaten by a beast.
However, SY is actually alive and pretty traumatized, but he copes with it by saving/helping every animal he sees. Almost as if trying to compensate for not being able to save his brother.
Not long after that, SY is adopted by a mysterious fox spirit of that forest (a sentient and powerful animal spirit, that is) and raised alongside the spirit's biological offspring.
And by living years with those spirits, learning, bonding, connecting with them and caring deeply for them, SY is able to reinvent Beast Cultivation.
Beast Cultivation is a sort of lost art in that universe, mostly because of deep misunderstandings of how it works and how scary a beast cultivator is during combat or in a qi deviation.
Beast Cultivation is about the spiritual bond and deep understanding of humans and beasts, but most people thought it was about taming and controlling those beings instead.
Also, Beast Cultivation gave the cultivator several animal-like characteristics and, sometimes, habits. It usually depends on the kind of beast or spirit that has the deepest bond with the human.
So, considering all of this, SY becomes the first Beast Cultivator in millennia, sharing a very profound bond with fox spirits and becoming very powerful!
... but he also have become a bit feral due to his trauma and lack of human interaction during those years.
I like to imagine that SY gets some fox like features (like the eye shape and color, fangs and maybe claws) with the Cultivation and that his hair gets into a shape of many tails when he is using some techniques.
Maybe, with time, he starts to cast a fox shadow instead of a human one, making him be often mistaken by a huli jing of something like that.
He is eventually found by Yue Qi and SJ and taken back to their sect.
SY vows to come back to visit his fox family every year and somehow always accomplishes to at least see his fox mom. It's very cute.
At first, Cang Qiong Mountain has no idea where to place SY since there's no Beast Cultivation peak, but they absolutely don't want to let him go and lose the opportunity to help in the revival of this legendary path.
So they place him in the peak responsible for their livestock for the time being.
Aka until he is powerful enough for them to create a Peak for him.
However, SY is often called for special missions with other peaks and he gets especially close with a grumpy boy of the Bai Zhan Peak (muscles+brain of the operation at first), a chronically tired but brilliant boy from Qian Cao Peak (they are both very knowledgeable about their fields and love to exchange information) and a badass girl from Xian Shu Peak (SY has been drinking that respect women juice since his past life so she likes him).
SY mostly studies and writes about the beasts they encounter and once bonded with a mystical bird ™️ he once saved.
SJ and SY visit each other frequently and they sometimes sneak out to sleep in the woods since SJ doesn't feel safe around men (the only exception is his twin) and sometimes SY feels claustrophobic sleeping indoors.
At some point, SY starts to see some people as his pack ™️ and is fiercely protective of them, but also incredibly caring.
Fast forward to many years, SY has finally a Peak of his own, called probably something like Wilderness Peak or Inner Beast Peak.
With the power of a Peak Lord, he id able to care for and raise all kinds of beasts and spirits in the mountain. And, sometimes, he also adopts some normal animals too.
The only way to join it is through a very specific test OR if the person already has a deep bond with a beast.
Cang Qiong Mountain becomes even more powerful and influential now that there's a Beast Cultivator there (and Huan Hua Palace cries while bitting it's handkerchief).
With time, SY's peak is flourishing, even if it's the one with the smallest amount of disciples.
SY is best shizun ™️ while also being the weirdest shizun ™️, mostly due to his animalistic maneirisms and poor socialization skills (with humans. He is an absolute legend with the beasts)
He loves his disciples and sort of adopts them as his "spiritual cubs".
Liu Qingge has a huge crush on SY, developed during their long friendship and SY's ability to decipher LQG's emotions and moods without the need of words or very clear facial expressions.
No one knows how it works, but since the disciples of the Beast Peak also learn to do that, the other Peak Lords simply think it has to do with the cultivation.
One of the things the Beast Peak does is researching about different beasts and writing bestiaries, so they are soon considered essential to the sect and the rainbow bridge between Beast and Qing Jing peaks of often crossed to exchange information and the disciples also share some classes.
The scholars need to know about the beasts (for strategy AND for art) and the beast cultivators often learn music because many of said beings love good melodies.
Qing Jing disciples also absolutely love SY and he loves to give them candy when they bring messages from his brother.
SJ often visits SY after sect meetings to unwind by being doted on by his gentle and caring brother.
SJ and SY are known as "Sun and Moon Twins" in the Cultivation World and people often think SJ is the most dangerous of the two and should be avoided as much as possible.
SY actually encourages those unfounded rumors because he has fun when they try to invade his Peak.
He was raised by predadors and is a very good hunter, with or without his beasts.
No invader, human or not, has ever lived to tell the tale.
Part two will be ideas for the cannon time.

I've always felt that MXTX actually has a low opinion of anyone in her work who isn't the main couple... there's always this thread of disdain and condescension towards the side characters esp if they're the "common people"... and I think that's part of why fandom does so much victim blaming/apologization for MCs' flaws...
Well…I’ve actually only read Scum Villain, so I can’t speak to the text of MDZS or TGCF, and this may be skewing my perspective on this.
But? I have to say, this would definitely not be my take on SVSSS! For instance, you’ll have the narrator Shen Qingqiu mentally wincing at someone like Ming Fan for bullying Luo Binghe and thus digging his own grave (in the original PIDW novel, anyway) and wondering how stupid he must be, to be like this…but then SQQ actually treats Ming Fan with the sort of respect and kindness that earns his affection and loyalty, and it’s implied that SQQ cares about him and would not want to see him die at LBH’s hands, and I absolutely think that the book thinks this is good! Similarly, early-novel SQQ is frustrated with tween Ning Yingying’s careless, accidental riling of LBH’s bullies, but the book makes it clear that she later grows up to be a level-headed and beloved Qing Jing disciple who SQQ likes and respects as a person.
Like, these are examples of SQQ growing, going from thinking of them as annoying fictional characters who make bad, frustrating fictional decisions (that were written for them by Airplane Shooting Towards The Sky) to seeing them as actual people. This is part of SQQ’s own character growth, and his early takes on the characters/people around him aren’t necessarily meant to reflect MXTX’s view on the worthiness of her own non-MC characters. SQQ is a genuine unreliable narrator and his narration is not at all consistent with his actions or even his motives.
I also generally think the book’s take on the other Qiong Cang peak lords is pretty affectionate (Liu Qingge and Qi Qingqi’s attachment to and personal concern for SQQ is clear and absolutely depicted as a positive thing) and compassionate (Yue Qingyuan is like, cripes! SQQ in particular loves and respects him and feels very deeply about his Shen Jiu tragedy) and that while SVSSS doesn’t delve much into the non-demon, non-cultivator characters in its lore, its plot mechanics reflect a basic attitude that cultivators exist to protect innocent people from being preyed on by the supernatural (and in SVSSS particularly, from being preyed upon by the demons who like killing and eating humans), and that this important and the people being protected are worthy of that protection. And while you have to go into the extras for it, there’s also a lot of sympathy for Mobei-jun (and his demonic experiences) and Shang Qinghua (your resident annoying funny cowardly weasel dude, who is also…the author of PIDW and probably a voice of the author of SVSSS).
And also, lol. SVSSS is very, very aware (possibly more than the other books, I can’t really say), that its main pairing is a couple of obsessive nutjobs, each with their own speciality in personal delusions and bad emotional regulation. BingQiu are Deeply Fucked Up both as a couple and as individual people. The most compelling aspect of BingQiu to me is that after Maigu Ridge, SQQ knows goddamn well how insane Binghe is, how fundamentally broken he is, that this is someone who’d literally end the world to cope with his abandonment issues, that he is obsessed with SQQ to the point of being incapable of experiencing joy or contentment outside of his presence, that this is very unhealthy…and he’s like “yeah, I’m into it, let’s goooooooo!” MXTX thinks this is romantic but I also think she knows it’s messed up? It’s just that they’re going to do it anyway because people in fiction can make questionable life choices without it being a moral referendum.

Joining the ranks of people who pitch ideas at you... Youtube recommended me songs from 'Dear Evan Hansen' today, and now I can't stop thinking of Binghe being taught by OG!SQQ, and writing fake letters from his shizun to himself to cope, where he praises himself, and can feel loved... Enter transmigrated!SY, finding those letters, thinking he got transmigrated into a BL fanfiction or something, and proceeds to act llike the letters!SQQ... cue Bunhe freaking out his shizun came back Wrong xD
Wait, but why would Shen Yuan assume this is a BL fanfiction? Luo Binghe is still a kid - barely a teenager, more of a pre-teen! - and Shen Qingqiu is his teacher. (Plus Shen Yuan wouldn't actually act upon such a relationship because he's in a position of power.)
Wait- are we still having Shen Yuan transmigrate into PIDW at the same time? What if Shen Yuan transmigrates when it's a year before Luo Binghe gets pushed down the abyss and Shen Yuan is like, fuck! This IS A BL FANFIC! Now I can totally see that happening.
This is the age in which Luo Binghe has just started wooing his little Cang Qiong bride(s), but! Judging from these letters! Shen Yuan concludes that Luo Binghe has been trying to woo his teacher!
AND THE SCUMMY TEACHER IS RECIPROCATING!
Fuck fuck fuck-
Now Shen Yuan isn't sure if Liu Mingyan's glares are because "he" (aka the original goods) killed Liu Qingge or because he stole her future husband!

I’ve seen more than one person refuse to watch Lost You Forever because Xiaoyao isn’t going to end up with Xiang Liu, who they think looks really appealing, and honestly their loss. He’s a good character, but all the leads are interesting characters and there’s so much more to the show than ‘who will she choose.’
He’s literally not ‘another Runryu’ because he isn’t forced into an antagonist role?? He’s just a tragic character. And Cang Xuan and Tushan Jing and Xiaoyao are all really complex characters as well.
The show is about coping with trauma for all the main cast, so no, it’s not a fairytale and no she doesn’t choose the ‘changed for the better’ bad boy, but she also doesn’t choose the male lead.
She chooses the one that makes her feel safest, most secure, and most loved, and I actually find that compelling in its ordinariness in a series like this.
The fact that the main male/female relationship in this series doesn’t turn romantic should clue people in to the need to not go into it with a normal xianxia mindset. It’s essentially a character study over everything else.
Anyway watch Lost You Forever.
(To be clear when I say it’s ‘not a fairytale’, it’s not meant as a dig at them. I always describe LBFAD as a fairytale, and it’s my fave xianxia. I’m just describing the extremely different approach Lost You Forever has.)

!! CANG LAN JUE SPOILERS AHEAD !!
This is so beautiful that I had to pause the episodes to pen (type) my thoughts. And definitely not something I thought I'd be discussing with regards to a lovestory between a fairy and a devil but I guess that's the beauty of stories.
In therapy ( you can trust me on this, I have a master's in psychology), we often talk about how as adults we often resort to using coping mechanism and defense methods that we did as kids. And this is also the reason why adult relations might feel like a reptition of parental relations. However, we encourage people to reparent themselves as adults and try to not using the same harmful or defensive coping mechanisms that they did as kids. Of course, it's not easy and it requires so much concious effort and support from people currently in your life. And as you can guess, the worse your situation was as kid (I'm so sorry, and please know that you deserve better) the more difficult this journey of self-parenting is. And also unfortunately, the easier it is to go back to your old ways.
Can Lan Jue does such a great job of portraying this breaking of the trauma cycle. DFCQ refuses to kill shatter his father's soul, realises that he has a choice now, that he is no more at his father's mercy, that he can make better decisions and he knows better and maybe it'd be easy to go back to his old ways of not feeling after that's what he's known his whole life, but he has better people in his life now (Orchid and Shangque), and he is protected. All of these are exactly what help him in denying his father (also what an asshole) this time.
I love the writers for this, I love the actors for protraying this so well, and so much love to these beautiful characters.

thoughts on virgo rising ? i’m a girl and i have it haha idk how to feel about it
I’m a Virgo rising and we are fantastic, feel great about it! I won’t try and say what I think as my last attempt to give my thoughts on my own placements gave me a crisis but I’ll include some of what cafeastrology says about Virgo risings in my chart that I agree with or it flattered me
“Generally, there is an intelligent and reserved aura about Virgo rising individuals that is unmistakable. These are actually somewhat shy people who need time to analyze things around them before they warm up to both situations and people. This quality can be received exactly as that, or it can be received as a rather stand-offish, cool, and even critical manner (depending on the audience). One of the biggest personality traits of this position is body-awareness. People with Virgo ascendants are sensitive to any discomfort or other signals their body gives them.
Virgo ascendant natives have a tendency to worry a lot, especially when confronted with new situations. They notice the tiniest details that others overlook.
Despite the Virgo rising tendency to appear rather collected and professional, relationships can sometimes be messy simply because these natives don't always see their partners and partnerships clearly. There's a quiet charm to many Virgo rising people. Once they have the chance to warm up to new people and situations, you'll find they have a lot to offer. They'll help you out of a jam, go out on a limb for you, and surprise you with a natural modesty under a somewhat critical and standoffish manner.”

The Scum Villain' Twin is the Grandmaster of Beast Cultivation
AU Masterlist
Part 2: The Tragic Cannon route (aka PIDW)
At some point, not long after Luo Binghe enters the sect, Shen Jiu starts to act more and more protective and a bit obsessive towards his brother.
Shen Yuan is the only good thing in Shen Jiu's life and he can't bear the thought of losing him...
Especially since he can clearly see that Liu Qingge is planning on courting the Beast Peak Lord.
SJ and LQG's relationship gets even worse than it already was.
The Shen twins have their first fight in decades because SJ doesn't want SY to hang out with LQG and the other just wants his brother and his best friend to get along!
They leave in bad terms and don't talk for a while. This makes SJ even angrier and more abusive.
The first time Luo Binghe meets Shen Yuan is the first time someone was truly kind to him after his mother's death.
Aka Luo Binghe goes to the Beast Peak, gets a candy and a SY sunshine smile™️.
I picture SY say something like "my brother is a bit difficult to deal with, but please don't give up on him".
And while Luo Binghe is feeling like he just met a benevolent god, Shen Yuan is completely freaking out on the inside because "that's the protagonist!!!!"
Shen Jiu discovers that Shen Yuan gave "the little beast" candy and that LBH got to see SY's beautiful smile when he couldn't.
That wouldn't do.
Binghe's life gets worse, but he sometimes manages to flee to the Beast Peak, where the disciples let him cuddle fluffy animals and their shizun is kind (and rambles cutely). Binghe feels safe there.
Liu Qingge's death devastates Shen Yuan.
It gets worse when Liu Mingyuan visits the Beast Peak and shows a hairpin to SY
It was a hairpin carved from the bones of a powerful beast that LQG had slayed not long ago... And it was the hairpin the War God was going to give the Beast Cultivator in order to ask to court him.
The piece was simple, but it was clearly carved with a lot of care and it broke SY
Especially because he knew he would accept LQG's courtship.
In all of his years living in that world, he had more than enough time to know himself and accept that he is a huge cutsleeve.
But it was in that moment that SY finally realized how much in love he was with LQG.
Shen Yuan, one who usually kept his hairstyle simple and functional, now wore Qingge's hairpin religiously.
He and Mingyuan also got close, finding confort in telling stories about Qingge whenever the grief was too big to deal with alone.
But the loss made Shen Yuan be more reserved, rarely getting out of his Peak and spending more and more time with his beloved beasts and disciples.
This only made SJ more and more vicious.
He was losing his brother. He was losing his precious didi.
Life in Qing Jing Peak only got worse, especially for Binghe.
The Immortal Conference was the only time in years that SY got out of his Peak.
He was finally being able to cope better with grief and wished to cheer for the disciples of the sect.
He did not see his brother throwing Luo Binghe into the Abyss, but he does see the corpses of his own disciples.
All his trauma and grief made SY be more and more closed off to the world outside his Peak.
His relationship with his brother was never mended as well.
The next time we see SY is when Luo Binghe is already the Demon Lord and is conquering the human realm.
Luo Binghe himself is in a difficult situation when he sees SY again.
On one hand, LBH desperately wants SY, his beautiful and kind shishu. A part of him knows the only took a fox spirit into his harem because of his absolute desire and attraction to that man. LBH is starved for that affection and kindness that only SY has truly offered him.
On the other hand, the Jungshang cannot look at Shen Yuan without seeing the man he hates the most: Shen Qingqiu. He always thought it was a curse that the man he wanted the most and his biggest tormentor had the same features.
So, LBH burns down Cang Qiong Mountain and kills most of the Peak Lords, leaving only Qingqi, Shen Yuan and Shen Qingqiu alive. The first was a request of his wife Mingyan, the second was because of his desire and the third was for revenge.
One day, SY is able to find his brother. He was still alive, but already a human stick.
It was the last straw for Shen Yuan.
Using his own sword, the transmigratror stabbed his twin, putting him out of his misery.
Then, he takes LQG's hairpin and stabs his own heart.
"Qingge, Jiu-ge... I only wish to Fate to be kinder to us in the next life"
Luo Binghe arrives not long after, roaring in rage and desperation when he saw SY dying.
The demon emperor gently cradled that corpse into his arms (much like how SY did with LQG) and cursed the heavens for taking away all he loved the most.
However, SY's doesn't spend much time in the passage for the afterlife.
In fact, SY wakes up soon after his death.
In his own body.
Years before everything went wrong. Before the end of the sect, before his relationship with his brother was strained, before Liu Qingge's death.
Shen Yuan then vows that, this time, he will protect his important people.
In the next part, we enter SVSSS territory 😉
Sorry for the angst

I've been thinking about this lately, but feel free to not answer it. We've seen Hitsugaya shed tears in front of his grandmother, but do you think there have been other instances where he's cried? He strikes me as the type to shed tears only on rare occasions.
Tumblr media
This is a very tough question for me to talk about because of its complexities. It's like asking if Byakuya cries which we all know would be a very seldom thing. We saw him cry in front of his Grandmother because he was torn between learning how to control his abilities, leaving his grandma on her own, or stay and ultimately kill her. The woman's support brought him to tears. I've written him cry on Kusaka's body, but we've never seen him actually cry during the entirety of the Diamond dust rebellion movie. Which honestly is a feat cause that kid was in evident pain and stress. I've written cry over Hinamori after the winter war ended, but Canonly, we did not see any tears. Just determination onto getting stronger via vigorous training within whatever caves were away from the Seireitei. When Cang-du stole Hyourinmaru, he desperately cried out to his spiritual comrade, but there were no noticeable tears.
We've never seen him cry after his Grandmother, though he could have before Yamamoto's funeral seeing marking under his eyes. But be that as it may, we've mostly only seen him in low-spirits. We've seen him mad, infuriated with himself, and going through depression. With that said, I believe that crying would be something he does if his emotions were insanely severe. As in unmanageable. Toshiro copes with his stress and sadness with training or doing paperwork. Utilizing any sort of distraction until he feels less build-up. Not to mention that this panel here that holds my favorite quote of him perfectly represents how he deals with things. In other words, he knows that crying will not fix anything - It will not bring anything back. Thus, he must focus on moving forward - to ameliorate himself. - Crying would be a step down from that. It's hard for me to explain since i'm a Cry-baby, but i hope you understand my point. He'd cry if he was pushed far over his emotional limitations, but he completely refuses to fall to that point. He's headstrong. Determined. Remains rigid, thinking such emotions would deter his image. E.T.C But, yeah. Thank you for the question!
