WHG 20 - Day 1
The end begins at noon on a warm, sunny day. The weather is perfect for a picnic or a hike. A light breeze rustles the leaves as podiums rise from the ground, bearing the 24 tributes up into the arena, full of biomes and biodiversity ripe for keeping alive. This is survival mode on easy difficulty. But there’s a catch.
The clock strikes noon, and it’s time to play. The bombs around the podiums deactivate after giving everyone one minute to survey the bounty of resources amid the Cornucopia, there for the taking--for anyone who’s bold enough!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Silver quickly makes like mercury and vanishes from the rankings. Too soon to make a deus ex machina joke? Sorry, actually, the deus was exed from Machina several days ago. Vera, Della, and Graeme look to make themselves dangerous! Triel and Najdinel play the long game, and Hugo throws hands with a child and loses. Good win, Ash!
But as the tributes scatter, strange things happen in various parts of the arena. First, for two hours after noon strikes, flames bathe a raised section of the arena, sparing only tributes who find caves to stash away in. A few hours later, another section rises up and becomes a sphere, rotating and battering tributes to death if they can’t find gyroscopic caves to stay in.
The next few hours, insects swarm a sector--today, the effects of the bites are mild. Then, as the sun sets, it dazzles the westmost sector, causing hallucinations if looked at directly.
Tumblr media
Ignore the maze thing for now. That one’s not supposed to happen until morning. Beau got lost in a maze that triggered early. Anyway, onto the deaths!
Garnet, Garnet, Garnet. Never appreciating the gravity of the situation. And Maya had to take the fall. Tragic. At least you two share the spotlight as the only deaths of the day!
Meanwhile, lots of people are very concerned about water (Jubilee really gets bonus points for xer efforts there), higher powers are betting on Ares, and Layla begins her real estate empire!
Darkness falls, and cannon shots mark out the dead as their faces blink past one more time in the holographic sky...
Tumblr media
And the night begins, starting with venomous cat-dog mutts at 8:00 in one area, and then at 10:00, in another, the temperature plummets past survivability, though some hot rocks will give trapped tributes a chance. Then, the really devious trick: the days here in this shell are not 24 but 26 hours long, and in one unlucky zone, those extra two hours are celebrated with sightless, muffled darkness.
Then time resumes as normal, featuring one area with random noises ranging from annoying to permanently damaging. Just before dawn, a force field will surround an area, letting no new air in, suffocating anyone who can’t find pockets of oxygen. And then at dawn, we have some pleasant acid rain in a particular area with vary little tree cover, though if you can find some shade, it’ll protect you. Then cracks in the earth make a maze that will slowly rise towards the upper screens and forcefields and will crush tributes who can’t find their way out fast enough (and the faster they leave, the shorter the fall!). Then, before noon, birds. Birds in one area that will swarm unwary tributes and not let them leave or stop moving.
And then it’s back to noon and fire! But first, night and darkness...
Tumblr media
I don’t know whose fire everyone is hiding from if Della couldn’t make one. Everyone’s wisdom gets them through the next night alive, at least, though Yuen and Steele could be doing better. All in all, though, not a bad day. It’s still anyone’s game! Except Silver’s. Or Garnet’s. Or Maya’s. Sorry, fellas--better luck next time.

Hi I don’t know if you’ve mentioned it before but I would love to know what books you’ve read and what ones you really enjoyed. Seeing as I really like your writing i think I might like some of ur book recs!
i love love love talking about books, anon, so i never get sick of the question!!! <3
my own very personal fave books ever:
les miserables (victor hugo), the vampire chronicles series (anne rice), the discworld series (terry pratchett), the picture of dorian gray (oscar wilde), we have always lived in the castle (shirley jackson - i also love her short story collections a lot!!!), let the right one in (john ajvide lindqvist), the chrestomanci series (diana wynne jones), anything by laura purcell, the valdemar series (mercedes lackey)
books/authors i've read recently (slash within the past few years) and have really enjoyed:
the regency faerie tales series (olivia atwater), spinning silver (naomi novik), deathless (catherynne m valente), the bell at sealey head (patricia a mckillip - i've been reading a lot of mckillip and really enjoying it!), bitterthorn (kat dunn), the salt grows heavy (cassandra khaw).
if you want recs in specific genres or about specific things i can help with that too, these are just generic recommendations! my personal interests tend to be fantasy, horror, and especially historical variants in both! i love fairy tale retellings and gothic vibes and vampires and fae beings. (i also love recommendations from other people too!)
i am currently reading (and have been high key struggling with) silver nitrate by silvia moreno-garcia; i've been recommended her work a lot but if more of them are like this i'm not sure if i'll enjoy them! still, i will persevere!!!!

WHG 20 Day 2 - Ares
This is my last one for today! Tagging: @ratracechronicler (thanks for Atwater!), @maple-writes, @pen-of-roses, @drabbleitout, @grailfish, @forthesanityofsome, and @pied-piper-of-hamlet!
I went out to look for more tributes, but they were hard to find, and, well, I should have brought someone else, because at sunset, Primary decided to start the fucking visions again.
It was all the same shit, with me killing my friends. It was almost familiar enough to be more annoying than traumatic. I tried to find a safe-ish place to rest, stumbling through the forest.
And I heard some rustling, so I tensed and looked around even if I couldn’t see. “Hello? Who’s there?” Just because the person could be a tribute that Triel recruited, I couldn’t use my magic right away.
“Just a racoon.” I couldn’t place the voice.
I looked over towards them, but of course, I couldn’t see anything besides me killing the people I cared about. I summoned my black flames to my hand. “Don’t come any closer! Who are you?”
“Alright. Can you see, kid?”
They didn’t sound threatening. I shook my head. “Not…not at the moment. But I can still fight.” I jutted my chin out.
“That is a theory I don’t want to test. Just stand still. There’s no one else around. Nobody’s attacking.”
I relaxed a little but didn’t get rid of my flames. “Who are you?”
“The guy from 4, the one who can’t walk straight. Hugo Atwater. What’s your name?”
I blinked. I recognized his name. “Triel said she recruited you. I was supposed to keep my eyes out for you. Didn’t think this would happen so soon.” I waved my hand over my eyes. “I’m…Ares. District 1.”
“Ah…we have a mutual friend.” Something thumped. “I’m guessing you looked a little too closely at that sunset, Ares?”
Triel had mentioned something like that, but no, this was Primary. I shook my head. “No, unfortunately, this is something different. I kind of have the soul of a god who wants to use me as a vessel trying to convince me to destroy my soul by showing me killing all my friends over and over until they get tired.” I shrugged.
“…Well, that does put a bit of a damper on your evening plans, I imagine. Have you tried blasphemy? I’m sure you get that a lot actually, but gods do tend to hate that sort of thing, I’ve heard.”
“I’ve already called them a crusty shit, and that didn’t make them leave. It’s fine. Once they get tired, I can bring you to Triel!”
“Oh, you can do better than that, kid. Ahoy, crusty shit. My mum’s god’s got ten arms and a tiger. You’re out here bothering a teenager with war flashbacks like some two-dimensional cartoon ghost. I’ve met mollusks with more backbone. I don’t believe you. Ares, there’s a nice flattish log coming up to your knees a few paces two o’ clock. Take a load off, kid, and let the little sleep paralysis demon tucker themself out.”
Who is this mortal? I like him. He’s amusing, too amusing to not listen to him this one time.
The visions blurred, and as I sat down on the log he had mentioned, they went away. I blinked and looked around. I was in a forest, and it was indeed Atwater standing near me. I stared at him. “That worked. They said you were too amusing to not back off for now.”
“Well, at least I’m good for something.” His eyebrows went up a little. “Wait, can you see again?”
I nodded. “Well enough. Don’t know how long they’ll let me though.”
“This is a…habitual thing for you two, then?”
I nodded again. “Ever since the interview. I’m used to it by now.” I shrugged. But this didn’t matter. I could see again! “But now that I’m not blinded, I can fly you to Triel’s camp!”
He didn’t look convinced about what I had first said, and he looked even more concerned after I was said I could fly him to camp. “You can fly.”
I nodded, standing up. “I can change into a phoenix. You wanna see?”
“Hell, yeah.”
I…I could make him proud. I wanted to make him proud. Like…like my dad. I transformed into the phoenix and squawked at him, tilting my head to try to ask if it was ok if I could pick him up.
“Yeah, that checks out.” He grinned, and I couldn’t help the warmth in my chest. I made him proud! He even gave me a thumbs up! “Badass, kid. Oh—we’re gonna do the flying thing now? I mean, you can try, but don’t strain yourself.”
I could easily carry a person, so there were no worries there! I squawked again and ruffled my feathers in happiness before I flapped my wings and flew up to get some momentum before grabbing his shoulders to fly him towards the camp. He held tightly to my claws as I flew him, also holding onto his spear.
He looked stressed, and honestly, I was getting really fucking tired, so I set him down close to the camp but not quite there. The mutts were coming soon, but my magic should keep us safe.
I glanced over at Atwater once I transformed back. “We can walk the rest of the way, if you’d like.”
“That would be ideal,” Atwater wheezed, but before we could get walking, the howls of the cat-dog mutts echoed through the night, and I tensed and readied to protect Atwater from them, but a fireball scared them off, and Chess hobbled into sight, holding tightly to a small mutt who was snuggling up to her. She was cooing at the mutt. What the fuck?
Atwater collapsed quietly as I stared at her, collapsing as well, since I had gotten tired. Chess looked up and smiled. “Ares! You’re okay! We’ve been worried! And Atwater!” She hobbled over, the mutt crawling up to her shoulders and lying down with a yawn. “You’re safe! I’m so glad!”
“Uh. Right.” Atwater sat up and looked over at me. “Are you alright?”
I nodded, standing up and tilting my head at the mutt. He had a calico color, with a dog’s face, but one cat ear and one dog ear. And his feet and the end of his tail looking like a ghostly smoke. “I’m fine. More mentally tired than anything.”
“Well. Splendid.” He sighed and lay back down, waggling his fingers at Chess, glancing at her in askance.
Chess sat down next to us, so I collapsed again. “I thought I had seen a runt mutt with the others, and they had been mean to him, but look at him! He’s so sweet!” She held him out to Atwater.
Atwater nodded, handing him a stick. He leaned over towards me. “Not to pry, miss, but you seem to be experiencing more gravitational issues than someone in full health ought to. Is that half-rate shitstain in your head bothering you again?”
I looked up at him, not wanting to admit anything. “I’m not tired.”
He looked over at Chess. “Did she or did she not very recently mention being tired?”
Chess tilted her head. “Technically she mentioned being mentally tired. Not sure if that’s the same thing.”
I grinned. “See? I’m fine!” Not moving.
“It is the same word, you infants,” he tutted. “You can’t ‘yes, and’ each other out of a breakdown, physically or mentally. For fuck’s sake. Since you’ve elected to lie there in perfect health, then, at least quit trying to transform into a nautilus now and stretch your legs out. You’ll get bad circulation curled up like that, and your spine will stab you in the back in 20 years if you make it a habit. And drink something.” He fished out a flask, shaking his head.
Chess laughed, and I sighed and took the flask. “Yes, dad.” Fuck. The words had slipped from my lips before I could stop them. My cheeks heated up from embarrassment and takes the drink. It was just water, unfortunately.
“Belay the sass, or you’re grounded, young lady.” At least he hadn’t made a big deal about it. I just handed back the flask, still embarrassed.
Chess sat up more. “I can lead you two back to the camp! It’s not far!”
Atwater pocketed the flask and pulled himself up with the spear. “Great. On further examination, my legs are not, in fact, gelatin, so I’m good to go. Lead the way, Chess. Ares, I expect you can run circles around me, given how very fine you are, but try not to rush too far ahead for the sake of my fragile pride and all." He offered me a hand, and I took it to help me get up to walk.
Chess stood up and put the mutt on her shoulders and cheerily started leading the way. And to be sassy, I transformed into the phoenix and flew up and landed on Atwater’s shoulders so I didn’t have to walk, since I was actually tired. Atwater just whistled, acting like he didn’t notice.

Tacos Villa Corona, 3185 Glendale Blvd, Los Angeles (Atwater Village), CA 90039
Tumblr media
There are three places for tacos in Atwater Village: Hugo’s Tacos, El Buen Gusto, and Tacos Villa Corona. TVC has the most old school charm. It’s a walkup window that’s been in Atwater Village since 1993. El Buen Gusto is Salvadoran.
TVC serves breakfast all day – choose from breakfast tacos, papas burritos, quesadillas, and chilaquiles burritos. The breakfast burritos area $5 - $7. For lunch, they have burritos ($4 - $5), quesadillas, nachos, and tacos. Protein choices: steak, chicken, chorizo, and bacon.
Chilaquiles burrito with potato ($7): Eggs, crunchy corn tortilla chips, creamy pinto beans, onions, cilantro, salsa, cheese, and potatoes. The burrito was about 5 inches by 3 inches. It was a good size burrito but I wouldn’t call it a chilaquiles burrito. The tortilla chips weren’t coated in sauce. It was like a regular breakfast burrito with some tortilla chips. If they added salsa inside the burrito, I could not tell. It was a little bland but the salsa helped. The red salsa is very spicy! The price is so reasonable that I might go back. The food is better than Hugo’s Tacos too.
Look for parking on the side streets. No seating is available. Credit cards accepted.
3.5 out of 5 stars.

The results are in, and fortune has seen it fit to situate us with a cozy arena of the classic 24 tributes! Our lucky, plucky stars to root for are as follows. Let’s give the newcomers a warm welcome...and the old faces a wince of bad memories. Ready to make some new ones?
This is just the Initial Reaping, which means tweaks and swaps can still be made. Please review the entries to make sure everyone’s names and tags are spelled correctly and all seems well. In a few days, the simulation will be run and everything’s locked in, so do us all a favor and speak now!

My mother used to teach us that really bad people (not all people, don’t come at my mother for being ableist and problematic) get punished by having their “brains eat them”, which looks like brain cancer to outside observers but is definitely, totally, their own brain devouring itself to punish them for their many sins (stomach cancer works for this too, btw).   People who she has diagnosed with this condition: Lee Atwater, Ronald Reagan, my late paternal grandfather, Hugo Chavez, Susan Atkins and now, she is announcing with great schadenfreude, John McCain.

WHG 15 Imposter Syndrome Part 9
This is during day 2! Tagging: @sparkles-and-hens, @knmartinshouldbewriting, @maple-writes, @pen-of-roses, @thoughts-of-nora (also thanks for Scorpio!), and @ratracechronicler (also thanks for Atwater!)!
I found Scorpio and Atwater discussing something, but Atwater was holding a sharp branch, so something could happen. So, I did the smart thing and walked out to confront them just as Scorpio started to try to run and Atwater dropped his branch. Grand. I hadn’t had to interfere.
Well, I could still recruit someone. I cut Scorpio off with a grin. “Howdy. I have a proposition for you.”
“Ah. Now I’ve got one tribute on one side, and a second one on the other. This is not looking great,” Scorpio muttered to himself. “Oh well. I only have my life to lose. What’s your proposition?”
“I’m part of an alliance that’s planning on escaping from the arena, and I was wondering if you would be interested in escaping too.” Behind Scorpio, Atwater’s eyes landed on me, and a smile played on his lips, but he also winced. How was I supposed to take that? Then he started to edge away. Brilliant.
“An alliance? Really?” Scorpio sighed. “I’m assuming you’re a separate group who wants to escape this, since if you were with the one I met you’d know I was with them already.” Wait, more people were trying to escape? “Honestly, it seemed a good idea at the time…you know, a mini rebellion…but it just seems less likely now that we’re actually in the arena.” He paused. “However, I’d probably die anyway, no matter how much I pride my fighting skill. It’s better this slim chance than none, right?”
I nodded. Perfect. “Anyway, it’s been going smoothly so far, and we’ve recruited a few tributes by now. We’re not weak. It should actually work.”
He hummed. “I’m sure. Are you going to join up with the other group?”
Still had no idea who he was talking about. I cocked my head. “I don’t know any other group. I’ve teamed up with Reine, the District 9 tribute. Maybe that’s who you’re referring to?”
He snapped his fingers. “Yes! Her! I think!” He regained his composure quickly. “We met on the train.”
“Perfect! I haven’t been told everyone who has been recruited. Would you like to meet up with her?” I paused. It would probably be smart to make it seem like he died. “And I know a way to make the Capitol think you’re dead. If we destroy your tracker, they won’t know you’re alive anymore.”
“Is she thought to be alive?” Scorpio asked. “If she is, I don’t want the Capitol to see us together – if they think me dead, I mean. Because heck yes, I want to destroy my tracker.”
“Oh, huh,” Atwater muttered in the background, but I didn’t comment.
But Scorpio heard him too. He spun around toward Atwater. “Oh, right. This isn’t a very private conversation. You won’t tell anyone, right? Such as, say, the Capitol?”
I laughed. He already knew, and he hadn’t ratted me out yet. “I trust him.” I eyed him. “But I will need that very sharp stick you just dropped. I don’t actually have a knife, and I want to destroy the tracker.”
He picked it up. “Guess I’m getting roped into this.” He sighed and flipped the stick around to show off the pointed edge. “Good thing I sharpened this with my teeth all night.” Not very plausible, but who knew if that was true? Better to not comment.
Scorpio squinted at him and shrugged. “I can’t die from an infection,” I perked up and eyed him. Interesting. “can—oh no I definitely can. Eh. It’ll be worth it.”
“You…had to consider whether that was possible?” Atwater frowned as he pruned off the extra sticks on the branch.
“Listen, I don’t think about these things okay—”
I didn’t get into it, yet. I just shook my head and held out my hand for the stick. I grinned when he handed over the stick and turned to Scorpio. “I apologize. This will hurt.” I walked over to him and paused a little. I hadn’t ever hurt an ally, even if it was for a good cause. But I had to do it. I easily cut into his tracker arm with the branch and shook my head. “Shit. These sticks are stronger than they should be.”
“Bit odd, isn’t it?” Scorpio remarked, tensing at the pain. “I’ve noticed these trees are…is stronger the word? Or is it just normal for here?”
I laughed. “No, it’s not.” But wait. Why would he be asking that? Wasn’t he from here? Okay. I had to pry. After the tracker was cut out and destroyed and the cannon went off, I spoke up. “It’s odd. Your District partner also seems to be unsure about some things they should know about…”
“Tree shit can be confusing to people who aren’t land-lubbers,” Atwater cut in defensively. Sweet of him.
Scorpio was back-tracking now. “I just meant, you know, for the arena…to be honest I don’t know. I didn’t sleep well last night. I’m tired and when I get tired.”
I cocked an eyebrow at him. Wasn’t a good enough excuse. “Okay. So, what did you learn growing up? And don’t say the vague how to sail and how to fish answer.”
“A few knots, and before you say ‘oh that’s too vague’ I learned, for example, the fisherman’s knot, the uni knot, and the Palomar knot. I can sail and make a fishing net. Good enough?” He glared a little. Understandable. I was grilling him.
I sighed and nodded. Good enough for now. “Fine. But something is suspicious about you two.”
“Fishy, even,” Atwater muttered, and I snorted at the stupid pun.
Scorpio chuckled as well. “I dunno what the heck is going on with Syl, but I’m from here.”
Better just to let it go. For now. I finally tore off what was left of the fabric for one of my sleeves and bandaged up Scorpio’s arm. “I’ll lead you to where we’re staying.” I glanced over at Atwater, who still had a neutral expression. “Would you like to come along?”
“Well, you see, I sort of have this addiction to breathing, and I feel like being around you too long would interfere with that, so I don’t think I’ll stick with you, thanks.” Of course, he held up stick at the same time he said “stick”. “But you’re right about one thing. I won’t tell anyone about this. Especially the Capitol.”
I smirked. “We’ll get you yet, Mr. Inconspicuous. See you around.”
Scorpio snickered. “Nice to meet you anyway, Hugo.”
“You too.” He pointedly said that only to Scorpio. He just saluted me and retreated while still eyeing us. I sighed and shook my head with a smile. I couldn’t wait to actually recruit him.
*
Later that day, the parachute came right on time, right as the sun set. I smiled and snagged it out of the air. Just a small amount of food and a note: Keep it up!
Short, simple, let me know that it was still going well. Everything was going to be fine. It had to be.

Hugo’s Tacos, 3300  Glendale Blvd, Los Angeles (Atwater Village), CA 90039
Tumblr media
I drive by Hugo’s all the time and it’s a popular taco stand. I can see the appeal of the taco stand, especially late at night (Hugo’s closes at 9 PM though). The menu is extensive: tacos, burritos, tortas, burgers, nachos, quesadillas, tamales, taquitos, breakfast items, and sides. For fillings, they have chicken, soy chorizo, chorizo, potato, mushroom carnitas, carne asada, carnitas, al pastor, and grilled fish. It’s vegan-friendly.
Tacos are $3.79 - $4.09 each with your choice of soft or crispy shell, onions, cilantro and choice of salsa. On Tuesdays, tacos are $3. On Wednesdays, burritos are $7.
Grilled fish taco: I think it was tilapia, big chunks of tilapia with salt and pepper, onions, cilantro on two soft corn tortillas. The tacos were larger and had more filling than usual. The fish was too plain for me though.
Al pastor taco: Finely diced pork with lots of spices – this was my favorite taco though I’d like bigger pieces of pastor
Carnitas taco: Shredded pork – a bit dry but nice porky flavor
XXX red salsa: red hot habanero and smoked chipotle peppers: I was afraid their salsas wouldn’t be spicy enough but XXX red salsa was very spicy, like lip tingling spicy…a bit too salty but the tacos weren’t that salty so it balanced out.
They threw in some tortilla chips with my tacos. Order from one window, pick up at a different window. They have their own parking.
3 out of 5 stars.
