#OTD in 1600 – O'Neill engages Mountjoy's forces in the Battle of Moyry Pass.
In September of 1600, the Irish forces of Hugh O’Neill, whom the English had made Earl of Tyrone, were in rebellion against the crown. Two years earlier O’Neill and his principle ally “Red” Hugh O’Donnell had routed an English army under Sir Henry Bagenal at Yellow Ford, expelling the English completely from the lands of O’Neill. Now Charles Blount, Lord Mountjoy, was marching on Tyrone with…

Classic Masterpieces 4: Ben-Hur (1959)

#OTD in 1601 – Red Hugh O’Donnell leaves Ireland in search of Spanish aid, never to return home.
After the crushing defeat at Kinsale and most of his lands in Tyrconnell in his enemy’s control, Red Hugh O’Donnell left Ireland in order to seek financial and military aid in Spain. O’Donnell would never return home. He died less than a year later. Born in 1571, Red Hugh was the son of Ineen Dubh and Hugh O’Donnell, Lord of Tir Chonaill. #OTD in 1602 – “Red” Hugh O’Donnell dies in Simancas, Spain; evidence suggests he was poisoned by an English spy.
Red Hugh O’Donnell (Aodh Ruaidh Uí Dhomhnaill) is one of the most famous heroes of Ireland. He was viewed as the fulfilment of an old prophecy, and was imprisoned as a boy by the English who saw him as a threat. He escaped from Dublin Castle in 1591, in company with the sons of the O’Neill. Word of the escape shot through the land. Hugh formed an alliance with the O’Neills and by the end of May…

#OTD in 1601 – The Battle of Kinsale | Hugh O’Neill and Red Hugh O’Donnell are heavily defeated by Mountjoy.
If any one single battle of Ireland’s Nine Years War was pivotal in nature, it is the Battle of Kinsale. Kinsale is a sleepy little port town in the southeastern portion of the country. Through tactical blunder, it became the focus of a battle that would permanently destroy Ireland’s hopes for independence during this time period. The Spanish forces arrived in Kinsale, Co Cork in September 1601.…

#OTD in 1601 – Battle of Kinsale.
The Spanish forces arrived in Kinsale, Co Cork in September 1601. However, their army was much smaller than the Irish leaders had hoped for. In spite of this, the Irish were in a good position at the onset of the battle. Red Hugh O’Donnell persuaded a more cautious Hugh O’Neill to attack the assembled English forces, led by Lords Mountjoy and Carew. The battle was a disaster for the Irish;…

#OTD in 1607 – The Earls of Tyrone and Tyrconnell, along with a close circle of family and associates, boarded a ship at Rathmullan on Lough Swilly, bound for Spain.
This event has become known as ‘The Flight of the Earls’ and is widely regarded as one of the most enigmatic events in Irish history, virtually defying explanation. A French ship sailed from the northern harbour of Rathmullan in Lough Swilly. On board were Hugh O’Neill, Earl of Tyrone, and Rory O’Donnell, Earl of Tyrconnell, together with more than ninety of their family and followers. The ship…
