Toronto (The Times Groupe)- Canadian wireless carriers will not be allowed to use Huawei equipment in their high-speed 5G networks, the government announced Thursday, joining allies in banning the giant Chinese technology company.
“Canada had been the only member of the Five Eyes intelligence-pooling alliance not to bar or restrict use of equipment from Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. in its 5G networks.” Huawei had previously been banned by the U.S. and the other members – Britain, Australia, and New Zealand.
“Canada announces its plan to ban Huawei and ZTE products from its telecommunications networks,” Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne said.
China’s ZTE Corp., one of its biggest tech companies and one that is state-owned, is also included in Canada’s ban.
He said that Canada’s wireless companies would not be compensated if they already have the equipment installed.
Canadian wireless companies are already cooperating with other companies.
“There are many hostile actors who are ready to exploit vulnerabilities in our defenses,” Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino said.
The government has done an extensive review and is redoubling its efforts to protect Canadians, Mendicino said.
The Chinese government condemned the move against one of its national champions as “political manipulation” in cooperation with the United States, in violation of free market principles.
