#How Endgame Should Have Ended

Endgame actual ending (in my head, that is! 😋😆🥰)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
... in which Chakotay obviously got distracted on the way to the helm 😆🥰
I couldn’t decide which version to post, so why not share both? 😉 They’re very similar but the slight variation in the hand-touching conveys different emotions between them, which I like a lot!
(From a technical point of view, I have to say I’m rather pleased with the way the helm console and earth and moon came out! A lot of different challenges in this one! Always learning! Feel free to click to enlarge, the details seem a little blurry in the "thumbnail" view! )
Hope you enjoy! ❤️

An underrated benefit of love triangles is that they allow you to have a love story where the ending isn't immediately obvious. In your standard romance, the two leads meet, and then it's just a matter of time until they hit the plot beats that lead to the happily ever after. But the love triangle gives you two plotlines! Two different dynamics! Two valid directions for the plot to veer that will still lead to a romantic happy ending without that ending being a foregone conclusion.
The main character can grow and change in multiple different ways because there are two men on equal standing with her, who can have an influence on her in different ways, giving her multiple different lenses to help her understand who she is and who she really wants to be. When it's done right, the story will be satisfying no matter what the endgame is, because the point is going along on the journey and seeing who the characters become. And the great thing is that you don't know who they'll become because there are two valid options, so the entire story can be surprising, which is so refreshing when so many love stories are so predictable.
#random thought of the day#books#ignoring the multiple books i'm in the middle of should-be-reading#i dove into the only other una silberrad book available on ebook#('the good comrade' if you want to know)#and i'm a quarter of the way through#we've met two possible love interests#and i'm thrilled to find that i have no idea what endgame is going to be#there's one that i'm probably leaning toward that's a bit more standard enemies-to-lovers who enjoy intellectual sparring#but the other option is a *lot* like the love interest in her other book#i don't know if she'd be happy with him but he's going to have a huge effect on her character arc#and honestly she'd probably be a better person with him#both options would be satisfying endings so i can just settle back and go along for the ride#a theme i'm finding in her work (at least these two books) is what happens when people with different moral systems collide#people who are ruled by morality vs people ruled by convention vs people ruled by honor#and people who have different ideas of what they mean by all these things#different definitions of what they mean by right and wrong#and how their worlds are shaken when they interact with each other and find different ways of viewing things#and it makes for *really* satisfying romances because it's about how these people clash and collide and change each other#i'm not even sure she's doing it on purpose because these books are really rather slight#but the somewhat shallow style secretly offers a lot of ways to dive deeper#but it only really comes out later when you find yourself thinking about it after the book is shut#it's not necessarily obvious in the flow of the plot#i don't know how it works but it's fascinating

i desperately need to know what "troll the respawn jeremy" is and also hi i love you and everything you've written 🤍 (i regularly go reread the classics because they make me Feel Things)
Okay, so, "Troll the Respawn, Jeremy," is 1) a quote from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and b) the fic I've been trying to finish in time for Halloween for like.... years now. I cleverly only remember it exists in September, add a few thousand words, subtract about a thousand even, and then inevitably fail to finish in time. It's a great system, like, absolutely no notes on that, obviously. You're killing it, brain!
I'm honestly not sure how the thought originated in my head now but I do know the prompt for it was nothing more than 'zombie!Stiles' essentially. Stiles dies and the gang brings him back and he's... not quite right. The memories are there but his emotions aren't so he's rebuilding relationships, morality, and the everyday in this new framework where the only thing to stop him being awful is essentially if it's more work or not.
When it's not dark humor, it's actively silly. There's a lot of Stiles building bonds with Erica, Boyd, and Isaac, since he wasn't very close to them before he died meaning they have the least expectations for how he should be behaving. It's a lot of Pack, figuring out how his relationship with Scott is going to evolve and Jackson coming back and Peter's curiosity naturally being piqued by this less self-righteous version of Stiles and he and Stiles and Boyd watching soap operas together because of course they would.
It's a fun one and a humorous one, even with Derek pining in the background and Stiles having to decide what his emotional responsibility for this person is and if he should be the one to police his choices or not. Because, well, there has to be twisted psychology in there, right? It's a resurrection fic, dammit!
It's also a lot of making Derek do the work too, which I like - especially when I have a good reason for it, because Stiles is all path of least resistance, so these people want him, care for him, would like him around and so he would like to be around and preferably in a way where no one's commenting on his behavior so everyone's trying to help him build boundaries, want the right things, do the appropriate action, etc. So Derek's figuring out in real time what Stiles' motivations are and learning to work within them and having exchanges like:
D: "We can’t keep fucking if I die.”
S: “Unless I bring you back.  You might be more fun that way.  Less with the frowny face probably.”
D: “Sounds like a lot of work for you.”
Same kind of thing with making monogamy something Stiles might want by framing it in a way that's appealing specifically to him. It's interrogating in a lot of ways what's necessary to make a relationship work. My little ace brain has questions and this is the only way I know to get answers, okay, LOL
Snippet(s):
“You gonna get all deep and philosophical on me?” The church is a tiny one and Stiles had only ducked inside to avoid, well, everyone.  He hadn’t expected Boyd would follow.  Truthfully, he doesn’t expect a lot of what Boyd does.  He hadn’t thought about him much before he died and even less after. Follow he does though, settles into the pew ahead of and at a diagonal angle to him.  Feet up on the wood next to him, arm stretched out over the back so he’s facing Stiles rather than the front.  Like he’s expecting Stiles to offer the sermon tonight. Stiles blinks at him.  “No, I don’t think so,” he says, when it dawns on him: “Should I?”  He doesn’t know a lot about being dead, having only done it for a short time, but if he’s meant to start spewing revelations, or even Revelations, he’s willing to give it a try. “I’d prefer you didn’t,” Boyd says in his lazy tone of voice that seems indifferent to most everything around him.  Stiles likes that; it sounds like he feels.  “What are you doing here then?” “Isaac was around here.”  It’s close to where he works, this little abandoned site of holy ground.  And Stiles had kind of wanted to see if he’d taken on any vampiric dead-guy traits and couldn’t cross the threshold.  He doesn’t know what the new rules are, and is starting to suspect there aren’t any.  Which is about the most horrible thing he can think of.  “Then his boss called, and he wasn’t, and I was bored.  What are you doing here?” “Keeping an eye out.”  The way Boyd says it, it sounds like, ‘figuring out how many things are wrong with you.’ “Think I’ll start eating brains?”  Stiles is genuinely curious as to what the theories are.  Wants to see if any match up to his own. Boyd shrugs.  “Do you want to?”  He sounds genuinely curious too. Stiles shrugs back.  “I don’t have any moral qualms about it.  But it seems like a lot of work and there’s just pretty much no way they’re as good as Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, right?  It’s a bone-saw and blood and innards versus opening a plastic bag.”  He weighs them in his hands.  “That’s not even a hard decision to make.  If I am a zombie, which I’m not conceding by the way, then I’m a zombie with some serious dietary deficiencies.  I require processed foods, stat.”  Boyd seems to consider this, then decides, “Cheetos would be good.”  After a second, he adds, “I have Runts in my pocket.” Stiles jumps over the back of Boyd’s pew and lands hard near him, says, “Then break ‘em the fuck out, man.”  Stiles steals all the banana pieces spread out on the bench between them, and relinquishes the cherry ones as penance. They don’t talk.  It’s not half-bad.
(Angstier) Snippet #2:
“You’re not you,” Derek says gruffly, not meeting Stiles’ eyes when Stiles lowers his head and looks at him straight on.  Derek and Stiles’ dad, they just can’t ever seem to get there.  Derek says it like he thinks this is why Stiles is here and wants it out of the way.  So Stiles won’t be here any longer.
“Not entirely,” Stiles agrees, tapping his fingers along the counter, the island a buffer between them.  “But the basics are all there, I’m just having a hard time accessing my,” he does a half-assed robot dance, “bleep-blorp-beep morality center.  I kind of think maybe because it just doesn’t exist anymore?”  He grins widely.  “Fucking cool, right?”
Derek stares at Stiles’ adam’s apple, glassy-eyed and blank, says without inflection, “What.”
Stiles slides into the stool at the counter enthusiastically and talks as much with his hands as with his mouth.  “I mean, okay, there’s action and consequence, right?  And arguably the biggest action and consequence: life and death, I defied it and now it’s like, I don’t know, I can’t appreciate that there are consequences.”  He rubs a hand over his buzzed hair, back and forth, back and forth, jolting himself back into the present moment with the spiky side, losing himself in his head when he’s not fighting its natural direction and his hand hydroplanes smoothly over it.  “I just don’t feel things the way I used to and that’s my best guess for why.”
It’s better than his second-best guess: that there’s still a part of him that’s dead, that the only part that ever gave a shit about any of these death-prone people/supernatural whoosie-whatsits didn’t come back with him.
Derek stares down into the depths of his cup, asks it, “Why are you hanging around Isaac?”
Stiles shrugs, staring more intently at Derek the longer Derek avoids his gaze.  He can see Derek’s pulse thudding in his throat, fluttering like it’s trying to escape confinement entirely.  There’s a heaviness to him that Stiles doesn’t think has anything to do with the sleep that’s still clinging to him.  He looks like the weight between his hands, cradling his mug, is as draining as holding up a bowling ball with just his pinky fingers.  “I’m fixing him,” Stiles answers succinctly.
Derek raises an eyebrow.  “Why?”
Stiles shrugs some more.  His gaze drifts down to the folds of the tank top over Derek’s stomach, he wants to flatten his palm there, smooth it out.  Derek looks so warm and defenseless, leaning against his counter, barefoot and weary, defeated and just waiting for someone to finish him off.  “Something to do.  Plus,” Stiles adds, sly and low, “I fix him, I know how to break him.”
“You want to… break him.”  It’s not a question, more like a naked declaration that wishes it were uncertain in the least.  Derek’s eyes are downcast and sad.
Stiles sighs, places his elbow on the counter, drops his chin into his hand and stares at the stubble on Derek’s cheeks, can practically feel the rasp of it against his mouth.  “I don’t know.  Something to do.”  He’s really not malicious, he doesn’t think, just easily bored and inherently curious about how other people work.  Since he doesn’t seem to.
Derek drops his chin against his neck and Stiles watches a slow breath move the weight of him.  He doesn’t ask for anything else, has no more comments to make, almost seems to be rejecting Stiles’ presence simply by virtue of ignoring it.
Stiles stares down at the island, lifts up his other hand.  It hasn’t left behind an outline of perspiration.  He rubs his dry fingers against a dry palm.  Stiles’ hands sweat; they’ve always sweat.
They don’t now.  Now.  Now everything is scorching, burning up sweat and tears before they can even make an appearance on his skin.
He lets out a gusty breath and says quietly, but without judgment, “You shouldn’t have done this.”
Derek’s eyes close, rim of the cup against his lip, expression pained.   “It was my turn,” he says softly into the steam.  Stiles watches him and Derek’s head drifts to the side before he wrenches it back, jaw tight, looking in Stiles’ direction but down at his chest now, where the scar tissue is resting under the cotton of his t-shirt.  “To save you.”
“But you didn’t,” Stiles tells him blankly, but not meanly.
Anyone watching would’ve thought it was an upper-cut though, the way Derek’s whole body rocks with the impact.  His eyes are closed again and he doesn’t look inclined to open them, not while Stiles is still there.  His hand slowly curls around the lip of the counter behind him, holds on tightly.  He still answers though, through some weird sense of debt or something else Stiles doesn’t understand, but he answers, says, “I know.”
Wip list is here!

as someone who doesn't ship stancy or jancy, i admittedly do have a preference for jancy, but for very different reasons than the ones you mentioned in your previous, i was wondering if that was something you'd be interested in hearing? i know that post was a vent, so i didn't want to assume
ohhh yeah I'd be down to hear! I am not against Jancy at all I just think canon refuses to let them be interesting even when they're being messy. to me they are a neutral ship I guess? fine either way.
It was mostly a vent about how some people are so viciously anti-stancy that the just completely ignore the exact issues in the ship they like that they bring up for stancy? and while that applies to...a lot of ships honestly, it is pretty glaring discussing jancy and specifically the discussions of the future. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

(before the post starts: to everyone who follows me for stranger things i’m sorry you have to deal with my random adventures into other fandoms — this is for the marauders fandom so if you don’t care about that feel free to scroll 💞 and also as always fuck jkr)
me: this fic is going to be so fucking full of angst and jealousy and toxicity with rosekiller endgame
also me:
It’s silent for a moment— Barty convinced the Gryffindor’s eyes could bore into his soul if he let him stare long enough. “You’ve never needed to simply feel something, Potter?”
-
[Barty] lowered his voice, a hand almost absently reaching up to the other boy’s face. His middle finger ran down his jawline. “What does [Regulus] see in you?”
“What-?”
“He’s never looked at me the way he looks at you. What are you doing that I wasn’t?”
-
“I can move. Do you want-“
“No, stay.” James laid back down. It was dark, but Barty reached up anyway. His hand started in James’ hair then ran down to his cheek. His middle finger traced his jaw again— like it had that night on the tower. “I can see what he sees in you now.”
me in some tags AFTER i wrote the stuff above:

gaster's like oh i'm a god i get to decide when you die and i simply have to wonder how much of this is him bluffing/boasting & how much is an actual departure in-lore from the mechanics of the tournament. does he Really decide on a whim when adam gets to die, is he Really the god? or is he aware of the Actual greater power over the tourney's events: the voting process? adam knows about it being a tournament, so a meta-fuckery guy like gaster would be able to, i think, be aware of it a little further. and him being at its whims like that does explain why adam survived at first & hamood was killed, straightforwardly in a somewhat unintriguing way. or are we actually here to take that the events of doatk's story are pretend self-contained, the tournament in-universe is just a facade, and everything is both more & less structured than it looks? the whole alternate universe viewings were already a bit of a look at that. but then weren't dubduo on the verge of figuring out the structure of winning matches vs being eliminated? if adam's losses are always rigged by gaster himself, why have him participate tournament-wise himself, assuming that there isn't a roommate in the first two matches or that adam doesn't escape gonering every time? if adam's weak compared to gaster & gaster is a god over the realm, what's gained from letting him stick around, the results mishap, all that? sure can't wait to see where this goes

#arthur harrow#I am amused at how doomed he is; which of course is a must for becoming one of my favorites. He said putting glass in my shoes will balance#my scales; will erase my sin. boy did he miscalculate. I am also amused at how much christian his take on penance looks like.opposed to the#idea of being judged by Maat (here Ammit); the idea that it was not possible to be perfect; just balanced.Instead every way penance#atonement-repentance is interpreted; he won't ever get absolution.penance from paenitentia=repentance as the desire to be forgiven;#which he wants. he knows his hope is futile; but he still desires it. He uses the interpretation of penance; as deeds done out of penitence#focusing more on the external actions; than the repentance=referred as the true interior sorrow for one's hurtful words or actions.#He sees his sin as having enjoyed dealing out pain on khonshus behalf; but repentance implies a purpose of amendment which means the#resolve to avoid such hurtful behavior in the future. And boy does he seriously drop the ball on that one; because he still is murdering#his way through his idea of a salvation; for himself and the world at large; even knowing it will end in mass murder. Could he feel#contrition= remorseful or regret as defined as deepest and firmest sorrow for one's wrongdoings. For example after killing the elderly#lady in the alps; he didn't seem to enjoy that killing; but I don't think he regrets it. And goodness do his problems with his take on#penance keep piling up; because it takes two to tango in this guilt and absolution game; a sinner and a god and he is screwed with#any of his gods be it khonshu or ammit. ‘God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance’= goodness of God leads to repentance;#but God’s goodness does not erase his wrath. his gods have wrath to spare; most of all selfishness; pettiness in spades. If his#penance is dependent on the kindness of god we know he is out of luck. Even taking an approach to penances as epitemia which#are given with a therapeutic intent so they are opposite to the sin committed; he is again out of luck. He can't do epitemia in the true#sense of it=which is doing the opposite of his sin. He would need to give up his life for the ones he took.I still believe that he;#as a true ex-avatar of khonshu; is constantly suicidal. So maybe his endgame secretly was that his death should serve as the#last penance. But true epitemia; that is neither a punishment; nor merely a pious action; is specifically aimed at healing the spiritual#ailment that has been confessed; that will be forever out of his reach. Specially because he really has a gift for choosing the gods#he sells himself into slavery for. If it is believed that penance while a duty is first of all a gift from a god=‘no man can do any penance#worthy of God's consideration without his first giving the grace to do so'; it is in this where he again is screwed because he started#the assignment without knowing what it really was. This self imposed penance was without the ‘permission’/order from his#chosen deity; which leaves the god/dess in charge to reject the penance and to happily apply and bend their own rules for what#should constitute his penance=again a servitude without a hope of freedom. Becoming himself a walking reminder to everyone and#mostly to himself that gods are as abusing corrupt and selfish as the evil he wanted to erase and they don’t want penance or#balanced scales. They want tools to do their work = he is screwed because if khonshu doesnt let go of A+ slave material;Ammit isn’t#interested in his atonement or his unbalanced scales for what she sees is his future; she sees a useful servant#and its as easy as this I can reach tag limit in rambling on my favorite subjects guilt imperfect deities and doomed characters

hate the fact that they made shiv actively in love w janet bc i) he was basically narratively rebrov and janets child (look me in the eye and tell me he didnt give off the vibe) and ii) it means george was right in him and shivs confrontation in season 1 after he ends the world and not just talking out of his fucking ass :/
but at the same time it makes his character 100% sadder bc he loved her? and then she just turned around and deadass said “you owe us” like he hasnt done everything he possibly can to save them and save her. like it couldnt have been any one of them that made that mistake INCLUDING archie or rebrov or janet herself. just. 100% taking advantage of the love & familial craving shiv has for them - and turning it into an obligation bc it was his fault, after all, right? not wes who ultimately refused to turn back time for one life, their childs life. not wes who let janet go through the violence that is childbirth again and again and again. not wes that watched as she destroys another family, having lost her own to her messed up ideal of justice half a decade ago.

otis has been truly insufferable this season but also claps to eric and jean for specifically calling out how one track minded he is with maeve. i'm sure this means something and the writers will follow through with its implications. right

just finished watching LOK ( yeah I'm verrrrry late) and gotta say that while watching it, in the back of my mind I was waiting for the Korra//sami pairing to develop. From being on here on this site I just knew that 1) this pairing was insanely popular 2) they became canon 3) it was celebrated for LGB representation (so I was just happy for the people on my dash + cool canon lesbian ship).
So all of these memories had me intrigued while watching the show so I was patiently waiting in anticipation .... only to be met with confusion. This pairing just happened out of nowhere ????? ( or rather they had very little build up) and seemed forced. It felt so lukewarm so I was confused as to if I overlooked something but then I remember that there was a time on here where people were upholding fictional lgb couples as the pinnacle of progression just by virtue of * insert pairing being gay here* and I understood how the hype over them didn't match what I was watching. It just reminds me of how starved people were of any representation that they would take anything, even a lackluster written lgb couple with shitty buildup over a hetero ship I guess. It also has to do with people's tendencies to virtue signal and liking the ideas of lgb ships just because of orientation rather than chemistry/compatibility. It's all so moralized. Like I'm amazed by how bland and badly written Korras//ami turned out to be especially in comparison to any other combination in the Makorasami triangle. Anyways that was my wtf moment of the week and a reminder that a lot of liberal fandom spaces just align themselves with whatever makes them look good/ progressive etc.
