A Fourth World album by Shackleton (!) - The Majestic Yes (2022)

Taking off from Beaugars Seck’s foundational sabar drum rhythms — recorded by Sam in Dakar in February 2020 — Shackleton has constructed a trio of intricately layered, luminous, enchanted, epic excursions. The second is more dazzled and meandering, with jellied bass, insectile detail, and discombobulated jabbering; the third is more liquid, fleet of foot, and psychedelic, with a grooving b-line and funky keyboard stabs, scrambled eastern strings and hypnotic vocalese. The harmonium in The Overwhelming Yes sounds like Nico blowing in chillily from up the desert shore. The overall mood is wondrous, twinkling with light, onwards-and-upwards; an uncanny, dubwise mix of the ancient and the futuristic. Mark Ernestus’ Version is stripped, trepidatious, mystical, and stranger still, with just a snatch of the original melody, extra distortion and delay, and crystal-clear drum sound. yeah you need hobbies outside of media consumption or you’ll go insane. however if i spent an entire day reading books i would not go insane i would feel happy and fulfilled <3

#reading is my favourite hobby by far #to the point where i originally got into tma through reading the transcripts. if i’m having a Day with regards to focusing on audio #i can always read it. if i can’t i’m severely ill or utterly exhausted #reading just doesn’t feel like i’m consuming media. it feels like reading i don’t know how else to put it #sure there are books that give me brainrot and i would consider participating in their fandom to be a part of Consuming Media #but that probably accounts for maybe 5% of the books i read to be perfectly honest #i think rather than hobbies that aren’t Consuming Media people need hobbies that are offline #like sure they can be electronic i read ebooks all the time and i want to get back into html and css bc i liked it at school #but they aren’t socialmediaified. like when i post about my baking or my telescope it’s a) rare b) bc i wanna tell my mutuals what i’m up t #and i think making a hobby your entire online brand and doing it for money/clout is always going to change the way you enjoy it #also. tumblr is a weird case bc it’s the consuming media website it’s the fandom website. and you don’t see the people behind the blogs irl #so you don’t know what else they’re up to!! you just see them blorboposting!! #even the most deranged person here has interiority and likes doing other things #yes even the 24 year old children’s cartoon discourse bloggers. always remember that <3 #morganposting

House Ghosts Of Clover Hill

Friends. I've had a series of coincidences, and I think I've got house ghosts. I want to preface by saying I think ghosts are equally as implausible as gods. Both are made real by a sustained belief in them and, usually, it's an interesting story if nothing else. Also important to note, this is the day after the winter solstice. Anyway, I'm getting my laptop set up to do some stuff on Canva. Excellent morning for creative productivity. I've got some great music going, my heart is full. The computer is moving a little slow, it's not acting quite right. Whatever, it's starting up. I get a little notification pop up in the bottom corner "Files Ready To Print" with the description "Final 054F..." I'm not entirely sure, but I think that's my first contracts law final exam from 2016. Implausible, surely. I try to hover over the notification, but it disappears. Completely. Weird.

I open the file explorer. I at least want to check what gods-forsaken piece of stress writing is attempting to put itself physically back in my life. The file explorer doesn't react. I click again. Weird. My screen whites out. The Windows operating system has stopped responding. I have to shut my computer down completely. It then occurs to me... I didn't have this computer in 2016. The computer I used to write that final died in 2018. This notification was from an HP application that I haven't used in years and thought I uninstalled: I've had an Epson printer for the last three years.

I have to know what that file is. I get my computer booted, make sure to install all of the updates and restart it, and get it back up and running. I try to open the file explorer again because I'm still curious. It's not responding. It continues to not respond for the next half an hour. I check Google Drive. Maybe I've stored it somewhere other than this hard drive. No dice, "054F" and "o54F" don't return anything. It's only on this computer, and I can't find it to look at what it was. .... I'm going to think about this for the rest of the day.

This isn't about you, you understand. And in its way it probably seems like a cruel paradox. You were only trying to be helpful! But if I was working on something for Trek and this concept came up even in casual discussion, I would be honor-bound (and contractually required) to inform them that the idea had come to me from a reader or fan. And then—rightly, from their point of view—they would forbid me to use it, because the idea's originator might some day, despite all their friendly intentions now, sue them over it. And the evidence that I was at fault would be easy to obtain. Sending a DM on any major platform generates an electronic "paper trail" that will confirm its target has opened and read the message in question. And that electronic record can be subpoenaed and submitted as evidence, and would stand up in court.

"Oh, come on, who'd do a thing like that, what are the odds...?" people will say. But it's not generally known that I've already been involved in a high-stakes lawsuit in which someone tried to sue Mattel over material I wrote when developing the initial form of the "Barbie: Fairytopia" universe (and the first Fairytopia film) for them. I'd never so much as met or communicated with the person suing them, had never read even a word of their work... but they still went to great trouble and expense attempting to prove that I'd had access to their material and used it without permission.

Mattel won the suit (as I'd frankly been expecting: the attorney handling their defense was one of the most expert IP lawyers in the US). But it gave me the chills... and made it clear how very wrong things could go, and the kind of damage that could be done to my career and my personal life, if I even accidentally used ideas from unauthorized sources.

Seriously, folks. I know you all mean well! But please don't make me tap the sign. DO NOT SEND ME STORY IDEAS, no matter how vague or general or unformed they may be. To do so is to absolutely guarantee that they will never, ever happen.* (And in my own universes, your innocently-meant suggestion could mean that neither you or anyone else will ever see that particular Young Wizards or Middle Kingdoms plot, no matter how much you'd like to... because I take this stuff seriously.)

ETA: I would really, really appreciate it if y'all would refrain from giving @eldritchcatpossumamalgam grief in the tags.
