The reason Dalinar's shardplate is unpainted isn't because he's a serious salt-of-the-earth kind of guy who's Not Like The Other Highprinces with their frivolous fashionable frippery.
It's because Gavilar wouldn't let him get flames airbrushed all over it to make it go faster.

The 10 Types of Guy that Adolin Embodies
[Spoilers for Stormlight Archive!]
All terms in what follows--and the term “guy” in the title--are gender-neutral!
1. Horse Girl
Adolin loves horses. He had a special bond with his Ryshadium Sureblood, and after that horse’s death, he started spending time with his father’s, Gallant. He likes to feed them treats and brush them and talk to them. A horse girl for sure.
2. Himbo
Himbos must be beefy, kind, and dumb. Adolin is certainly beefy and certainly kind. He’s not always dumb, but he certainly has his moments...I’m thinking of how he once took a date to the stables as part of his investigation or when he (badly) pretended to know what Kaladin’s power was in a (bad) attempt to get Kaladin to confess. Even throwing himself in prison--but still bathing and wearing cologne and chatting to his girlfriend the whole time--has himbo vibes.
3. Fashion Icon
Adolin knows fashion and cares about fashion. He reads fashion magazines. He makes himself an outfit even using what he can scavenge in Shadesmar. He now accessorizes his uniforms since he follows the Codes more loosely. He is a fashion icon.
4. Ladies Man
Early Adolin dated a lot of ladies. He found it very easy to flirt and and to find dates, although he often had trouble keeping girlfriends...in part due to his wandering eyes. He’s now happily married, but “ladies man” was once a term that could be used to describe Adolin.
5. Bisexual Disaster
But being a fashion icon and a ladies man does not mean that Adolin is always smooth. To me, the height of bisexual diaster-ism is seeing a hot guy and thinking about what a catch he is...and then telling your girlfriend that she should date him instead. Luckily, Shallan is also a bisexual disaster, so they can enjoy fun dates talking about how you poop in Shardplate.
6. Smooth Criminal
Okay, but there is one way in which Adolin was rather smooth. At least, he did manage to not only murder a highlord, but also get away with it and even get put in charge of the investigation. On the inside, Adolin was not being smooth about any of this, but on the outside, he sure seemed to be!
7. Mom Friend
I am thinking in particular about when Kaladin, Shallan, and Adolin accidentally fell into Shadesmar. Adolin fears that he is useless in such a place, but what he actually does is take on the role of the group carer: he talks Kaladin through the journey since Kaladin is nearly comatose from despair, makes sure they make camp, and generally tries to keep the group positive and moving. I’m sure he would have been distributing snacks had he had the ability.
8. Jock
I mean, this one feels fairly self-explanatory. Adolin’s Calling is Dueling, which is kind of like a semiprofessional sport: they have brackets and everything. He likes to work out and be strong, and just generally has some big jock energy.
9. Theatre Kid
But Adolin also has a flair for the dramatic. We see this most of all during the series of duels during which he is trying to disarm the other highlords: he plays each one differently, going full brutal in one duel while slowly chipping away at the armor through light touches in the next one. He’s doing it for the show.
10. Trophy Husband
Originally, Shallan was just a woman from a minor house engaged to a highprince. Then it turned out that she was one of the original Radiants, and Adolin was just some guy. So if anything, Adolin is more the trophy spouse at this point. I think he’s okay with it.

5, 9 - Adolin
5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?
It's still Fuck You by Lily Allen 😭 He is on his bed with his ipod in 2008 daydreaming of highprince murder
9. Could you be roommates with this character?
Oh absolutely. I feel like if there was going to be any character that would be supportive and understanding of when I forget to do the dishes for the third day in a row it would be Adolin. I've been sitting here trying to think of a reason why we would fight and I'm kind of coming up with nothing. We could talk about fashion and horses I think we'd have a swell time. Probably he has mediocre taste in movies though.

This week is cosmere fashion week instigated by Edgebanter on instagram. So I thought broaden my own worldbuilding a little bit by having Adolin do a short guide through parts of the different fashion of roshar. Starting with my version of an ensemble a veden highprince might wear: striped jacket, takama and yes, a cape. (Because despite his own words... he CAN do cape!)
Tumblr media
After that came Thaylenah. This outfit was certainly lend to him by Queen Fen's son Kdralk... (the style of the gloves I got from old photographs of the Romanov family after I thought for the cooler southern climate I wanted to have a tidbit of Russian influence in there...)
Tumblr media
Bringing is my boy Sigzil to rock some fancy Azish robes (and hats) The cut of Adolin‘ open robe is a light nod towards the wide-sleeved robes worn by men in West Africa (although as I understand it, those are usually not open at the front and the sleeves are longer and/or folded over the shoulders... check out Nigerian wedding attire, it’s awesome). The Patterns are in part inspired by modern and historical Javanese and African prints
Tumblr media
some reshi fashion... Shallan, as we all, approves of open vests...
Tumblr media
And back in Alethkar sporting the lashes fashion style of the capital (before it got... well...). I don’t know how Adolin convinced Kaladin into wearing lighteyes fashion. Probably he was just overwhelmingly charming and Kal‘s defences broke down... Since I take some inspiration from sarees and indian fashion for the alethi version of the havah, i don’t see why that wouldn’t seep into men‘s fashion as well. Besides I just really like the achkan and sherwani stylewise... (just take a look at the designs of indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, if you don’t know them! Those are freaking gorgeous!) There will probably two more pictures for the weekend. But those won't contain Adolin, sooo I'll post these separately. Have a great weekend!!

Adolin, And The Uselessness Of Privilege
Adolin is by far the only one in the Stormlight Archives who has had to adjust so much without changing himself too much in the process. Before the Everstorm, he was the son of a highprince. He did not have to care about the troubles of the world, instead enjoying his time in dueling and fashion. He was accustomed to a life of privilege, and did not have to face any material difficulties.
Then came the Fused. His life was turned upside down, with his own betrothed turning out to be a Knight Radiant. His whole family had suddenly gained powers long forgotten, and Adolin must have felt a little overwhelmed. This culminated with the death of Sadeas.
Adolin himself hasn't changed much through the four books. He has adapted, to Shallan's worries, to being a highprince himself, but he is still the same person, the only person who can bring smiles to both Shallan and Kaladin.
We would think, with our focus on lived experience and such, that Adolin would be unsuffering, a man who's annoyed by the smallest inconvenience. And to some extent, he is. There are numerous examples of his thoughtlessness, of his unthinking nature towards others of a lower caste. But all of this theory, all of this concepts of privilege blow up in the face of one small fact. He cares.
There are only two people in the books whom I would say care of everyone, irrespective of anything. Those would be Kaladin and Adolin. Kaladin cares by taking responsibility for everyone. He feels their every single loss. He's made by those losses.
Adolin cares as well. He will go sit down with his soldiers, his friends and laugh. He will find ways to make people happy. Adolin cares in a way a friend would care. Kaladin cares in a way a king would.
My point is that inspite of everything pleasurable about Adolin's life before the war, he still cares. All the lighteyes grow boastful and cruel towards the darkeyes and the singers, but not Adolin. He might be uncaring of his status, but he makes that a good thing.
My conclusion is that Adolin is the single most pure person on Roshar. That's all.

character sheet.
full name: Shallan Davar pronunciation: Sha-Lahn Dah-var (fuck IPA i am not doing that shit again)
nicknames: strong one (by hoid), love, dear (by adolin), storming woman (mostly by kaladin)
height: 5′6″ age: 19/20 (rosharan years) / 21-22 (earth years)   zodiac: gemini (donut ask me when her bday is i donut have a date yet) languages: (spoken/written): veden (native), alethi, azish, selay (moderate skill in speaking only) thaylen (reading/writing only).
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS.
hair colour: rich, deep red, only red. eye colour: bright blue skin tone: shallan is very fair, though she spends as much time in the sun as she can, so her face is dusted with freckles. body type: slim and slender. unlike the curvaceous body type often seen on alethi women, shallan is much smaller both in figure and stature. she could be mistaken for delicate, at first glance. as she spends more time training with her blade, her body becomes much more defined and muscular, but she will never achieve any kind of bulky muscles, she simply does not have the body type.
accent: her natural veder accent would be considered low, given shallan’s isolation out in the countryside. she can speak in a more posh (re: acceptable) accent, but she has little reason to do so. dominant hand: right posture: shallan has the posture of a perfect vorin lady, back straight and shoulders back at all times. when sitting, her freehand always covers her safehand, placed delicately in her lap unless she is sketching. when walking, her hands are clasped in front of her. she is rarely animated in her posture when speaking, and depending on her company, she works hard to blend in. when alone, shallan may slouch when studying, or do her work in a very unlady like fashion on her bed. if she trusts her present company, they may witness this lapse in acceptable posture, but only if she trusts them.
CHILDHOOD.
place of birth: jah kaved hometown: some hick town in the middle of the countryside. birth weight / height: 6 pounds, 3 ounces. 18 inches. manner of birth: natural first words: pa siblings: (all elder, all brothers) helaran, balat, twins: wikim and jushu parents: lin davar, and an unnamed mother, malise davar (step mother), all deceased. parental involvement: shallan remembers a somewhat happy childhood (although the likelihood of that being the case is up for debate). her mother taught her how to draw, and was in charge of shallan’s education in the early years. much of her early years have been forgotten due to the trauma of shallan’s witnessing (see: committing) her mother’s murder. she did not speak at all for half a year afterwards. from that point on, her father became overbearing, and with each year he was less of the man shallan had first known. he was violent towards two of her brothers and the servants, often scaring away tutors, so shallan’s education in those critical years was sporadic at best. her father demanded complete obedience, and any deviation on her part meant that a servant got beaten in her place. in order to spare them and placate her father, shallan worked hard to draw little attention to herself and obey. it was her father who also chose her devotary (purity) rather than her having the opportunity to choose for herself.
ADULT LIFE
occupation: she is the ward of jasnah kholin, having managed to convince the woman she was worthy of wardship at seventeen. after being taken in, shallan begins her education in scholarship, fine tuning her skills in making logic based arguments, study, and critical thinking.
on the shattered plains, she secures work with highprince sebarial as a clerk while maintaining the work in finding urithiru that she started with jasnah, and working to infiltrate the secret group known as the ghostbloods.
she latter assumes a more public role as a knight radiant, the first of the order of lightweavers in centuries. while her status as a radiant is known, she works very hard to keep her work covert. she deals in spywork and information, and uses her lightweaving to form disguises for herself and associates. she has also used her abilities to battle unmade, work oathgates, and help run reconnaissance in kholinar.
as highprincess, her duties would include helping manage affairs of the realm and detecting intrigue to better aid her husband.
close friends: lmafo what are those????? jk, her brothers, later adolin, renarin, kaladin, jasnah (sort of, more teacher/student) wit/hoid (when he’s around). relationship status: verse dependent, married to adolin kholin in canon financial status: her family is destitute, and shallan herself has little experience in personally handling money. that being said, she knows how to balance finances and plan expenses. when working for sebarial, she manages to secure a comfortable pay from him, her later marriage secures her financial security, though her status as a radiant could’ve done that too. driver’s license: she could probably drive, but would be terrible at it due to the fact that she’d keep lookin out the window. she has little experience on horseback, but can manage. criminal record: technically none yet, having managed to get away with murder twice. she had also stolen successfully from jasnah kholin.
SEX & ROMANCE.
sexual orientation: bisexual romantic orientation: biromantic, could be polyromantic preferred emotional role: submissive (someone pls force her to accept comfort i am beggin) | dominant |  switch  |  unsure preferred sexual role: submissive |  dominant  |  switch  |  sex repulsed | libido: she’s basically DTF anytime and anywhere, and yes, i wish i were kidding, but she’s just horny on main. turn ons: she’s into more traditional kinds of attractiveness, people who look put together. but she really enjoys some kind of hint at wildness, hair that won’t quite stay, a kind of subtle ruggedness. post-battle disheveledness  is HOT. allow her to talk about her studies, things she’s working on or wanting to start, she’ll love that. don’t be afraid to talk about your own interests, she goes off on her own a lot, so she’ll want someone with their own hobbies too. be kind, be willing to grow and change and share. be there if she asks. laugh at her absolutely fucking awful jokes. on the more physical side, not being afraid to show affection in public. that spot on the neck below the ear? yeah, kiss it. leave a mark. kiss the inside of her wrist. do not be afraid to be rough with her, she’s not easily hurt and she doesn’t always like being treated like a china doll. go to town. BUT you must also be good at taking your time. tenderness is a good trait to have in every day life, but if you can translate that into the intimacy of the bedroom, give her a slow buildup, ur golden. turn offs: unnecessary rudeness, lack of independence. anyone who treats her like she needs protecting, or thinks she needs to confine herself in some way, for any amount of time. never laughing at her terrible jokes, or indulging her seemingly random curiosities. being a skybreaker. love language: physical touch is primary, but quality time and words of affirmation are also great. relationship tendencies: shallan has a tendency to fall fast. even when she’s telling herself to be careful and take things slow, it’s easy to pull her in and have her grow an attachment on a superficial level fairly early. she’s good about letting the other person lean on her for support, but she’s not so great when it comes to sharing anything deep about herself. she has a habit of trying to mold herself into what she thinks the other person would like, and clinging to that. if confused she might play around with feelings, though she’s not fully aware she’s doing it. she’s big on positive reinforcement, she’ll let you know if she enjoys your company, and when she’s invested in the relationship, she’ll look for fun ways to spend time with that person. she might attempt to appear more serious and mature than she is, but her silliness will slip out. when she loves though, she loves completely, and a distracted heart is settled once she makes a decision about what she wants.
MISCELLANEOUS.
character’s theme song: flowers, from ha.des.town iris, goo goo dolls moth’s wings, passion pit: this is more a general vibe. i picture it when shallan is in a creative spurt. sun, sleeping at last: for the same creation aesthetic. fire drills, dessa (for when she finally Snaps. and also some lines just really Hit)
hobbies to pass the time: drawing is the big one. she’s always got her sketchbook and something to draw with on hand. it’s an art she’s perfected and uses it both for her lightweaving, and to relax. she enjoys scholarship, exploring history is of a special interest, but taking a closer look at the local flora and fauna is just as fun. she’s naturally curious, so if something grabs her attention, she will want to take a look. she also enjoys discussing what she’s working on with other people, sometimes just so she can use them as a sounding board, but also because they might have insights she doesn’t. it’s very fun for her to explore ideas. she likes going on walks, exploring the area around her. just spending quality time with people she enjoys too. mental illnesses: Dissociative Personality Disorder is the big one. ADHD, PTSD, some depression. physical illnesses: None. left or right brained: right fears: CONFINEMENT. she fears vulnerability and relying others, but she also craves it quite a bit. she fears being understood completely because she’s certain there isn’t anything left to love if someone were to see everything. she fears what she can’t understand, and losing the people she loves, more than she already has. self confidence level: extremely low. she projects an air of self confidence, but frequently downplays her talents. she finds it completely astounding that adolin might actually find her attractive in any sense, let alone be interested in her as a person. her trauma and what she precieves as crimes has left her feeling hollowed out, because she is so terrified of someone really Seeing her, she works hard to hide those corners of herself from others and often feels like she’s failing at even that. vulnerabilities: shallan keeps secrets. too many of them. and she can often dig herself into a pit and struggle to get herself out, and even when she’s in that deep, she has difficulty asking for help. she doesn’t always think things through. her dpd can leave her particularly vulnerable depending on which personality is in control (veil in particular has trouble seeing the Big Picture). it’s easy to goad her into a fight (of the verbal variety) and she will stop at nothing to have the last word. if you have members of her family to hold over her, that’s a good tool. and shallan cannot resist a good mystery, that is a surefire way to pull her in.

Please soemone write a crossover between Stormlight and The Untamed. I need my babies to meet each other.
Mostly, I just want Navani to see Yanli be like, “Is anyone going to adopt her?” And not wait for an answer. And also I need an Adolin and JC friendship. Like, willing to stab someone who threatens their family in the face without hesitation? Check. Amazing fashion sense? Check. Brothers who charge headfirst into danger with no regard for their personal safety? Check.
Speaking of Adolin, him and Jin Zixuan are equally bad at romance just in different ways.
And just like, imagine Yanli in the Alethi court. She would absolutely destroy the highprinces.
Also, Yanli and Rock having cook-offs. Bridge 4, JC, and WWX are thrilled with this development. Unfortunately they are all biased and no one can decide who’s food is actually better. Adolin once almost said who he thought was a better cook but the glares he got from the bridgemen and the Yunmeng bros shut him up because he is not going to risk his life over some stew/soup, no matter how good it is.

We only have 3/10 books of the series so far ... but what do you think about a Stormlight Archive AU for the 5+ headcanons?
Oh my goodness yes if there’s one thing I am absolutely certain about it’s Brandon Sanderson novels always make great Voltron Crossover AU’s. This is  longer than 5 for sure, so I’m putting in a cut because it’s Long and I Can’t Stop Myself.
I hope all 2 people who understand this enjoy it
Highprince Alfor is one of the ten Alethi highprinces leading an assault on the Shattered Plains, alongside several others, including Highprinces Zarkon, Blaytz, and Gyrgan. Trigel is also a leading force behind her own army and the Dalterion princedom, but due to the gendred nature of Alethkar and war and combat being considered a man’s profession, she is basically the power behind the highprince’s throne but uses a male figurehead to do the actual warring.
Highprince Alfor is considered rather...unfashionable and perhaps a little scandalous for an Alethi highprince.
Although like many of his countrymen he is brash enough to rush into battle sometimes without thinking, or considering overall strategy, he also does not fit the Alethi mold completely. He fights alongside his men despite having a shardblade and shardplate, rather than letting them be cannon fodder before he takes on the weakened enemies for the final kills.
He’s been witnessed treating darkeyes with respect and camaraderie, even as a brightlord and a highprince.
And perhaps most scandalous of all, there are rumors that he can read, despite it being a distinctly female skill, and that he finds interests in other female areas of study like sciences.
As a result he’s something of a joke amongst many of the other highprinces, although he remains good friends with Blaytz, Gyrgan and Trigel.
He and Zarkon used to be good friends and once worked together to unify a great deal of the land into modern Alethkar, but have grown apart after Alfor found Zarkon growing too bloodthirsty even for an Alethi highprince.
Alfor’s daughter, Brightlady Allura, is much like her father.
Refusing to conform completely to Alethi practice, she does not hesitate to speak her mind about the foolishness of continuing the battle on the Shattered Plains for more than ten years. The games for the gemhearts are ridiculous in her opinion; they should strike quickly and efficiently as a full military force to actually win the battle. Her thoughts on military strategy are often disregarded, as it is not considered a female practice, although Alfor respects her intelligence when it comes to military combat considerably.
Allura has of course mastered most feminine arts required of her as a Brightlady, including fashion, arts (though she is somewhat lacking here), sciences (her favorite), scholarship, history, music, language, writing, and logic, and she scribes for her father personally. But there are rumors that, like her father, she scandalously disregards Vorin tradition and actually trains in weapons in her spare time, behind closed doors. And not even lighteyed weapons like swords! She trains with common darkeyed things like spears! Allura maintains perfect poise and composure in public, but even so, by now the rumors surrounding House Altea make more than one person regard them like they have no head.
When intrigue in the warcamps grows stronger and strange things begin happening, Allura begins to attract the attention of certain...otherworldly, conceptual beings.
Realistically speaking, Allura’s Voltron powers would suggest she would be either an Edgedancer or a Truthwatcher, since either one has access to the surge of Progression, which grants healing and growth powers. Of those, Truthwatcher would probably match more, as it also grants illusion and sometimes future sight, and its spren appears like a shaft or glimmer of light.
That said, I also adore the idea of Allura being a Bondsmith because can you just fucking imagine her bonding the Stormfather, forming spiritual connections with others, literally doing what she does in canon by bonding large groups into a cohesive whole for one united purpose, and also fucking refueling everyone with Stormlight/Quintessence when they’re on empty like the badass woman she is.
Like seriously just look at the bondsmith ideals. “I will unite instead of divide. I will bring men together.” “I will take responsibility for what I have done. If I must fall, I will rise each time a better man.” Allura as bondsmith, yes plz.
I like to reforge a little of a story when I do these AU crossovers but honestly, Kaladin’s story is a near perfect match for what I’d do with Shiro, anyway.
Shiro originally joins the army so he has opportunity to leave his little farming village. Although most assume his Calling is that of a soldier, which is a perfectly respectable male Calling, what he actually wants to do is explore and see the world beyond his village. Joining the army will let him see other places and earn enough spheres to travel on his own once his enlistment is up.
Unfortunately he is captured in a border skirmish and through increasing bouts of bad luck, ends up as a slave in House Daibazaal’s army. Bridge FourFivebecauseofthelionsgetit is not a great place to be and most people end up as canon fodder during the battles for the gemhearts.
Despite things looking really, really bad, Shiro is still determined to get out of this situation. Alive. With as many people as possible. Running is no good; the soldiers keep a good eye on the slaves. Nobody gives a damn about them; they’re just bridge slaves destined to be used as bait during the gemheart strikes. But Shiro has a way about him of encouraging people to do their best. He looks out for his fellow bridge crew even if they don’t care much about him in return, at first. People just feel like they can live through something if he’s leading them. They trust him. More and more slaves rally to his call and listen to his orders. They start calling him their Champion. Not everyone makes it every time, but more survive than anticipated. A sense of camaraderie starts to form. And even though it would be really easy to give up and abandon them all, or just stop caring every time somebody dies, Shiro doesn’t let himself.
Because of his actions, Shiro starts attracting honorspren, and eventually bonds to one. Because Shiro needs to fly, damn it, and I can’t see him being a Skybreaker; they’re a little too Law and Order levels of paladin. Shiro is definitely a Windrunner. Just look at those oaths! “I will protect those who cannot protect themselves” is literally what he does in canon against Myzax. “I will protect even those I hate, so long as it is right.” Shiro’s done this too in canon; he’s worked with people who had previously been enemies or protected characters that have clearly irritated him.
Keith is originally an orphan who ended up joining the army mostly so he wouldn’t starve to death. He originally is recruited as a page/runner, but in a particularly bad border skirmish he ends up getting put on the front lines, despite having very little training with spears.
(He does actually have some weapons training, with swords and knives, but he’s a darkeyes, so nobody is supposed to know that. ‘Don’t tell anyone you know how to do this,’ his mother and father repeatedly told him, while he was still alive. ‘They will wonder what rules you broke and you will get in trouble. Don’t ever trust a lighteyes).
Keith is positive he’s going to die that day, but Shiro actually saves his life on the battlefield. Afterwards, Shiro looks out for him for the six months or so they’re both in the same army together. It’s the first time anybody has ever cared about Keith at all since his parents died and he grows incredibly loyal to Shiro because of it.
When Shiro is captured Keith is devastated and basically tries to go AWOL. He’s caught and reprimanded repeatedly but keeps trying to run, until he’s eventually stripped of rank and cast into slavery. He’s a rebellious slave even then, constantly trying to run, and not worth the time of most slavers, so he eventually gets shipped out to the Shattered Plains where he won’t be able to escape and will probably die as fodder anyway
This ends up working out well for Keith, as he ends up stuck in Bridge Five where the lowest of the low slaves go, and finds Shiro again. He’s immediately OK with it. Bridge Five is awful but he trusts Shiro and he’ll do whatever is needed to support him. Keith is one of Shiro’s first real supporters on Bridge Five and the one that not-so-subtly encourages/forces others to listen to Shiro as well, or at least tries. Shiro usually tells him to back off a little because a team can’t be forced. But others do see that loyalty and that protection and learn to trust Shiro in part because they observe Keith.
Keith also has a secret he hasn’t even told Shiro, at least not right away: Keith owns a Shardblade. It used to be his mother’s (again, very strange for a woman), but when she disappeared the blade was left behind, bond broken. His father took it up, but made Keith promise to bond it and showed him how, in the event that his father died. Keith did as ordered when his father died, hiding the blade away inside his soul before any lighteyes could take it, but he’s very careful to never, ever reveal that he has one.
Keith doesn’t trust lighteyes at all and is extremely suspicious of them
He actually is the first to recognize the strange things happening around Shiro may, just maybe, be because of Surgebinding. His mother used to tell stories, whenever she showed him her knife, of the Knights Radiant and the old powers they had. He thought they were just stories, but when Shiro starts unconsciously doing these things, he tells Shiro about the knife and starts trying to help him figure out what’s going on.
Once Shiro’s ideals and his strength with his honorspren gets strong enough that the rest of Bridge Five starts developing Windrunner squires in his presence, Keith struggles to come to terms with the fact that he appears untouched by Shiro’s abilities. An Honorspren is a lot to live up to and Keith is afraid he can’t do it. Especially when, as time passes, every time he summons his shardblade he swears he hears screaming...
I would love it if Keith actually gets a similar storyline to Adolin instead, wherein he actually starts to awaken the spren in his inherited shardblade and bonds with whatever type that is instead. Because the knife feels like an extension of him and a partner. It’s the reason other honorspren wouldn’t try to bond with him, though, and the reason he can’t inherit Shiro’s powers when around him. (This would also be a nod to Keith struggling to live up to Shiro as a leader and forming his own way of doing things in canon)
Lance also inadvertently ends up on Bridge Five
Like many lowborn darkeyes, Lance had romantic dreams of going to battle, defeating a shardbearer, and getting to rise to nobility as he became a lighteyes through the shard bond. He planned to take good care of his family after that and never have to work a farm again. So he joins House Daibazaal’s army, for his region.
This didn’t work out out in practice as it turns out shardbearers are terrifying on the field and nobody in their right mind could ever take one down. Lance is suddenly brought to terms with his own morality and tries to desert. Unfortunately he gets caught and ends up as a slave on the Shattered Plains, shunted into Bridge Five. Where people go to die, basically, so he’s terrified.
That’s when he meets Shiro, who he looks up to almost right away. Because Shiro is just good at taking care of everyone on Bridge Five, and makes him feel like maybe, just maybe, he could live through this and see his family again.
That’s also when he meets Keith who he hates because what is this guy’s deal he’s a jerk. (But they do eventually learn to get along)
Lance is forced to come to grips with his own initial cowardice and he initially hates himself for it. He resolves to be stronger and do better, especially with a role model like Shiro to look up to. Even if they’re in the absolute pit of humanity they don’t have to act like it. They can still do their best. He’s also a little jealous of Keith at first, who never seems to be scared of anything even down here as a bridge slave, which sparks his rivalry with him to start.
When Shiro starts developing powers and the rest of Bridge Five starts inheriting dregs of them as squires, Lance is also seemingly incapable of getting those powers. It’s actually one of the ways he manages to bond better with Keith, when they both commiserate over being unable to do what Shiro can even though they’re both trying so hard in their own ways.
In actuality Lance is just destined to bond with a different kind of spren, but he has to realize who he really is first and what his Ideals actually are before he can recognize that or be recognized by a spren in turn.
I kind of like the idea of him being an Edgedancer, but Willshapers are described as having a “love of adventure, novelty, or oddity" and that they are "capricious, frustrating, and unreliable,” which could also match Lance. Although it’s hard to say since we haven’t seen their powers in action yet soooo...maybe it wouldn’t be a good match.
Pidge is another one that has a lot of parallels to Shallan to the point when half the story is going to be the same despite my best efforts, really
Pidge used to be a dutiful daughter and acted as the scribe for her father and brother, who did a lot of exploration and traveling work. However they mysteriously disappear in one of the cities, at the same time a lot of other people start to go missing
Pidge, alarmed but suspicious, starts doing more research and starts finding some frightening details that are curiously relevant between the disappearances and some terrifying lore from old stories.
No one believes her but she is convinced that a lot of weird things happening indicate some seriously dangerous turn of events with some very dark and evil beings. She even begins to suspect the battle at the Shattered Plains might not be what it seems; in fact, it might be a distraction from the real purpose.
She determines to head for the Shattered Plains. That seems to be the heart of everything, based on her research. One way or another, going there will help her find her brother and father again, and she can warn people there that dangerous things are coming.
People aren’t willing to believe her (or her newfound friend, Hunk) when she goes there at first, especially because she’s lowborn. However, Brightlady Allura takes a keen interest in what she has to say and gives her a place to stay, and Highprince Alfor takes her seriously.
While digging into the darker things and researching into some very unsettling information, Pidge attracts the wrong sort of crowd with the Ghostbloods.
She also attracts a spren of her own, and honestly I can’t see her being anything other than a Lightweaver like Shallan, because c’mon. Illusions? The ability to restructure things into other things? Pidge spends half her time in canon pretending to be somebody else, sneaking around, and messing around with science. This is absolutely up her alley. Lightweaving also commonly gifts an extraordinary memory or aptitude for precise details, which Pidge has displayed in spades.
Hunk has always had an interest in distinctly ‘female’ skills and pursuits, like cooking, sciences, and general academia, while he never shown particular interest in more masculine pursuits, like politics or combat. As such, Hunk eventually choses to join the Ardentia, which traditionally grants its members a genderless position in society and the right to pursue skills traditional to both genders.
Hunk isn’t actually all that religious--he just really wanted to learn cooking (and to be able to try sweet female foods as much as spicy male foods), and to study sciences. He also enjoys reading and writing and just learning in general.
Hunk is originally content just working at the temples and getting to learn cooking and to study to his heart’s content in his spare time. It’s a nice, safe, easy life and he gets to enjoy it.
Unfortunately once a young woman named Pidge starts entering the temples asking some very dangerous, on-the-edge-of-blasphemy questions about the Unmade and general theological debate, and insinuating some dangerous things about the war in the Shattered Plains, things start to get less comfortable.
Despite everything Hunk can see Pidge has some good points. She’s sharp, good at logic and makes for decent conversation about all sorts of topics. Her arguments aren’t unfounded even if they are uncomfortable. When she points out that this could be dangerous for all of Roshar, including his family and anyone he might ever care about, he grudgingly agrees to help her try to make her case. So he travels to the Shattered Plains with her.
Once on the Shattered Plains he ends up becoming an ardent specifically tied to House Altea, so he’s under their protection, since some of the edge-of-blasphemy questions he asks (or supports Pidge on) get him in a bit of trouble with the order. It’s okay though, everyone else here is so scandalous or unconventional he feels like he fits right in.
The full team does eventually meet up in the middle of a battle and Bridge Five does eventually join House Altea, though I have no idea under what circumstances. It’s honestly hard to top Kaladin’s rescue in The Way of Kings.

The Way of Models- Stormlight Archives Fanfiction
Characters: Adolin/Shallan, Jakamav/Inkima
Summary: Adolin can’t wait to be featured in a televised fashion design competition, but a bet with his friends may make things a little more difficult.
Modern AU with Roshar elements. Basically I couldn’t commit to either so I did a little melding. It’s basically modern technology on Roshar. Also men can read. I don’t mention Spren but they could be around.
_____
Jakamav accepted his wine with a wide grin to the waitress that was returned with a well-practiced, if insincere, smile in reply. Adolin accepted his drink with a smile of his own, though he kept his eyes on his friend.
“I hear congratulations are in order, you made it onto the show.” Jakamav said, turning up the collar of his green sportscoat.
“Finally,” Adolin said with a broad grin. “I think they’ve just been trying to get a name for themselves before calling in the real stars. Smart if you ask me, every other season of ‘The Look’ will pale in comparison after they see what I’m capable of.”
The Look was a competition-based reality show highlighting the best and brightest upcoming fashion designers and models in Roshar. For 10 weeks designers would be given a particular theme for inspiration for a single outfit that their models would wear down the runway, with one team getting eliminated each week until the three best would have a full show. The fairly new show was quickly gaining in popularity boosted by live online audience voting. This year they were trying to become more interactive than ever as the competitors were tasked with staging and photographing a photo shoot to promote outfits for side-challenges. The pictures would be posted to social media for the public to vote on, with the winners given an advantage in the next challenge. As a model, Jakamav knew very well what the next few months would entail.
He looked forward to it. He knew that he was handsome, and that he wore clothing well. He was already growing a name for himself on the ‘best dressed’ lists at the kings banquets and other high society events. There was only one problem, well two really. First, none of the outfit’s he’d gained ‘best dressed’ notoriety with were designed by his girlfriend Inkima, and she was to be his designer for the competition. Second, Adolin really was good at what he did. He may not be as good as he thought he was, but he was good. He knew color better than Inkima, and he was more creative. He would be a great contender, a greater one than Jakamav really cared to go up against.
“And you and Inkima of course,” Adolin suddenly added, as though noting his faux pas. “With all of us competing at once, it will be a season to remember.”
Clunky recovery, lacking any poise or subtlety. Jakamav wished the highprince’s designs were as ill-refined as his politicking.
“Of course.” Jakamav said, indicating to the waitress that they wanted another drink. “And I assume Shallan will be joining you?” That would be good at least. Sure the girl was pretty, but the man thought her hair wasn’t nearly as refined as the Alethi black, and her freckles may cause problems as well.
Adolin grinned stupidly at the mention of his girlfriend. Storms, but the man had it bad. “Yes, but not as my model. She wanted to be my assistant.”
Jakamav’s nose wrinkled in confusion. He never understood Shallan. What girl would rather be an assistant than a model? Didn’t all girls want to be models? All girls aside from Shallan, apparently. “An assistant? Really?”
“She is a master with makeup. You should see it sometime, she can look like a completely different person. It’s incredible. Plus, she’s good with lighting and stuff, she’ll be good for all of the… you know, new stuff. Who’s going to be Inkima’s assistant.”
“Danlan offered.” Jakamav took care to watch Adolin’s reaction at dropping the name of his ex so abruptly, but the other man was so caught up in thinking about his current girlfriend that he hardly seemed to notice. Oh well, the way Adolin went through women, they would probably break up before the third episode was through. That would be give Inkima an edge then.
Adolin nodded and took a long draw of his drink to empty it as the waitress came to refill it. The man’s head was starting to bob to the music of the live band on the stage, likely already feeling the effects of the strong drink.
“And your model?” Jakamav asked, settling back into his chair.
“I’m not sure yet. I’m thinking of finding someone online, maybe putting an add out at an agency.”
Well that was interesting. Jakamav wasn’t nearly as good at manipulations as his girlfriend, but Adolin was a fairly easy target, maybe he could nudge the man a little. “Hmm. It’s not exactly fair though, is it?”
“What?”
“You, having the cream of the crop of models to choose from. You’re the nephew to the king, son of the Blackthorn the greatest martial artist of all time, a master duelist, one of Roshar’s most famous eligible bachelors even without the show. You could show models a sack and they would pretend it was an honor to model for you. Even if the rules do state you have to use an amateur, you’re going to end up with the best of the best. No matter the other’s designs, you’ll have an edge.”
Adolin snorted. The combination of his euphoria at getting accepted, Jakamav’s compliments, the pulsing beat of the nightclub music, and the intoxicating wine was beginning to get to him. That much was obvious to the other man. It was making him overconfident, cocky. It was prime breeding ground for the manipulative Alethi brighteye. “Please,” The blonde-and-black haired man said. “I could make anyone look good, and I mean anyone.”
Jakamav scoffed. “Please, we both know you say that, but you’ll choose some light-eyed beauty whose been practicing modeling for years.”
“No man, I’m serious. I guarantee that I could win with anyone.”
“Fine. How about we make this interesting then, eh?”
“Fine. Choose anyone here, anyone, and I guarantee I’ll win with them as my model.”
Jakamav grinned. This was perfect. He hadn’t been sure how Adolin would react to his prying, but this was perfect. A guarantee like that could mean only one thing: a bet. Jakamav was certainly a gambling man. The brightlord thought for a moment, what could the payment be though? Adolin was so confident, this could be an excellent moment for some political dealings. There was some tension between his house and Dalinar’s at the moment. Oh, but that was so boring. Also, if the stakes were too high even Adolin wouldn’t agree to the bet. Adolin swiped a lock of black-blonde hair out of his eyes and Jakamav grinned. That would be perfect.
“Fine then, I will choose your model. If you lose though, you have to shave your head.” Adolin gaped at his friend, completely aghast, and Jakamav grinned. This was probably actually higher stakes to Adolin than any kind of political subterfuge. “That is, unless you don’t think you can do it.”
The kholin bristled. “No, I’ll win with whoever you pick. When I do, you have to shave your head.” Jakamav froze. Maybe these stakes were too high. Adolin grinned at him. “Well? Pick your champion.”
Jakamav looked around and his heart began to sink. This is why he usually let Inkima plan stuff like this. OF course he would make this challenge in one of the kingdoms most exclusive clubs. No one could even get in unless they were rich, beautiful, young lighteyes. None of the clientele would have any issues being a fantastic model, and none of them would even consider passing up the chance to grow in the esteem of the Kholins. Who then, should he pick? Someone who he knew to be annoying and argumentative? Someone in his pocket that he could easily bribe? Perhaps a beautiful woman that would be sure to draw Adolin’s eye and hasten his and Shallan’s falling out?
Wait, was that- perfect. Jakamav pointed with a smirk. “Him.”
____
Adolin followed his friend’s pointing finger and froze. “The bouncer?” He asked, incredulous.
Jakamav was pointing at a well-muscled darkeyed man standing at the entrance to the club. The man’s stance bespoke of strength and aggression as he eyed the lighteyes in line to get in with a discerning gaze. His uniform, while well cared for, was obviously worn, as though he wore it every night because he didn’t own alternatives. His eyes were dark brown and what looked liked prison tattoos peeked out from where the tank top revealed his shoulders and back.
It was obvious that had he not been an employee, the man would not have been allowed within ten miles of the place without someone calling the police on the ‘ruffian loitering around the high-end district’. Worst of all though was his expression. It was as though a storm cloud had become trapped in the man’s face, dangerous and volatile. Adolin doubted that the man could do anything but scowl, he certainly was not the type to ‘smile for the camera’.
His friend grinned. “Yeah, him. I thought you wanted a challenge. Oh and look, he’s going on break now. You’d better hurry, this may be your only chance.”
Looking up, the highprince could see that the bouncer was being replaced with an equally intimidating man, though the new guy’s scowl could never compare to the original’s. Jakamav clearly wasn’t going to change his mind. Adolin stood and hastily began walking towards where the bouncer was headed, determined to beat the man to the employees only area.
The man was walking with a quick, purposeful stride, but wasn’t actively trying to hurry like Adolin was so the brighteyes managed to catch up quickly. The designer stepped in front of the man with a large smile, putting every ounce of charm he had into the expression.
“Hi, I’m Adolin. Nice to meet you.”
The bouncer gave him a flat look in reply, “I’m not letting your underage friends in, I don’t care how much you pay me.”
“No, no” Adolin laughed, “That’s not it, I just wanted to ask you about something.”
“I also have no interest in being the ‘darkeye’ notch on your headboard.”
“No!” Adolin blushed. “That’s not what I, no. You misunderstand. I have a proposition for you.”
“My answer stands.” The bouncer said, just as flat as the first time he spoke. “Also, no, I don’t know who you are and why you are so incredibly important. Nor do I care. I also don’t care if you complain to the manager about me. I’m hired here because I don’t give into the whims of lighteyes like you. I suggest you give up.” He tried to side-step around Adolin, but the highprince blocked his path.
“Please, just hear me out.” The bouncer sighed. He remained in the spot, though he did it with the air of someone dealing with a difficult customer and didn’t want to get fired. Refusing Adolin was one thing. Walking away from a lighteved customer who wanted his attention would be another.
Adolin realized that this man would not be impressed by his charm nor his position. No, the plain, blunt truth would best serve him here. Though few other highprinces used it, Adolin knew what a powerful tool the truth could be. It was what had interested Shallan at least. “I am a contestant on ‘The Look’ next season. Do you watch it?”
The bouncer raised one, unimpressed brown and Adolin deflated. Right. He didn’t seem like the fashion show type. The young lord coughed awkwardly. “Right. Uh, anyway, My friend and I just made a bet that he could pick anyone as my model and I’d still win the show. Loser has to shave his head. He picked you.”
“Then I suggest you find a nice hat.” The man tried to get around Adolin again, and the brighteyes started sputtering.
“But this is a chance to be on TV! It’s one of the highest rated shows of the year, you’d be famous!”
“I’d want that, why?” The man was scowling even fiercer now, which Adolin wouldn’t have thought was possible. He also didn’t have any idea how to respond to the man’s question. Why wouldn’t he want that? He glanced over at Jakamav in despair, but the other man just held two fingers up in a way that looked vaguely like a pair of scissors and pretended to cut his hair. Adolin grimaced.
“I’ll give you all of the prize money if we win! Every cent.” Shallan was going to kill him. Oh, Shallan, speaking of. “My girlfriend is kinda sorta related to Sebariel, the owner of this club.” Or not related. He was very confused about that relationship, but he’d long since stopped questioning Shallan. “I can guarantee that you can come right back to your job afterwards.”
The man’s dark look remained, and for a moment it looked like he was going to give another curt reply and walk off, but then he paused and looked thoughtful. The man sighed heavily, as though the next words were being rung out of him. “How much?”
“Huh?”
“How much is the prize money?”
“500 Ruby Broams. And we’ll win. I know it, I’m the best.”
The stranger looked physically pained by the boasting, but his lips moved and Adolin could almost see him making calculations in his head about what that amount could gain him. “That’s two months, right? After that I get back to my normal life?”
“Yes! Yes, I promise. All the prize if we win, and your job waiting for you guaranteed.” The money would have been nice, but neither he nor Shallan really needed it. She was going to give him an earful, but it would be fine.
He hoped.
The bouncer sighed. “I must be a storming fool.” He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a single black and white business card. ‘Bridge 4 Bodyguards, Bouncers, and Catering services.’ Under the title was a single phone number. “Call sometime tomorrow. If I don’t pick up, ask for Kaladin.”

I told myself I was gonna finish another book before moving on to WoR, but I done went and read the prologue and started ch 1 about a month ago.
Then I got hit with the paralyzing fear of Things To Come, namely: 1) Sadeas going off the rails into dumb bitch villain territory, and then getting stabbed (and not in the fun way!) by a far less fashionable boy, and 2) Oh Jesus GoD No It's Dalinar and He's FULLY On His Bullshit, because I just know he's gonna have his dick out and be slappin' everyone in the face with it (again, not in the fun way!) now that he's beaten that Highprince of War appointment out of his nephew like the Honorable Man he is.
And I only just remembered that there will be a 3rd head to this beast, and that's the Absolute Terror Combo Bullshit of Dalinar and Navani, being just the most insufferable couple--and oh boy, they're gonna get married! Navani learned NOTHING from near 3 decades of marriage to Runner Up Husband, and Brando is just gonna reward her increasingly poor decisions by having her relationship with Too Violent First Choice be fine and dandy.
And I swear to god, I'm going to chug a mid-strength beer every time Dalinar comments on how good she smells/how hot she is, as well as if/when Navani goes all "Oh, isn't he just darling?" over Dalinar. If you don't hear from me for a while, I'm pulling a Dalinar in a ditch somewhere.
I need a goddamn support group. There need to be book clubs that are just support groups for new readers having to deal with this shit for the first time.

Running Reads Oathbringer: Part II.III
Spoilers for pages 410-480 below. Also some Mistborn spoilers cause of a couple Cosmere thoughts.
"No good can come of two Shards settling in one location."
*looks at Ruin and Preservation*
Okay it was a bit dire there for a while but they really fit together.
And what about worlds with three Shards?
Does this mean this Shard isn't Cultivation then?
Maybe Autonomy?
I'm glad Jasnah has some healthy paranoia
Good Jasnah, ensuring Shallan is actually involved in the meeting
Ah yes now we get into discussions of the Parshmen
Yay Kaladin for defending them.
War only fuels Odium after all
"Maybe that should make you reconsider those other wars, rather than using them to justify this one."
Ooooh
You go Kaladin
I am worried though, cause the Voidspren definitely have experience with manipulating negotiations and I think even one of the Listener songs referred to it
The Parshmen do not deserve this
There has to be another way
Kholinar being a dark spot is really concerning. Like how does that happen magically?
Heh a strike squad infiltrating a possibly occupied city
This is going to be fun
I wonder who the three men in Kaladin's strike squad will be
(or maybe we could bring in Lyn so it's not all dudes in a strike squad just saying)
(I know she actually has to learn to Invest first but I can dream)
Jasnah has a point about the long term
The danger of different orders is the conflict. The value is that they can focus on different aspects of the war
BAHAHAHAHA I love Jasnah's plan just for the sheer audacity of it
But I agree with Dalinar, locating's good, killing less certain
I'm kind of sad that the only interaction between my faves has been antagonistic
Jasnah you are admittedly overlooking the point that war fuels Odium. Killing Parshmen will make them more your enemy and only lead to more war.
I'm definitely not opposed to Windrunner scouts though
Jasnah had better cuddle some skyeels
I can’t believe this is a sentence I wrote. What is this book.
Ugh no please no love triangle Shallan stop doodling Kaladin also seriously you had one job
I'm with Jasnah on this. Shallan has accomplished a lot but she's settling on her laurels when she needs to grow in a lot of ways.
Shallan you are Veil
Shallan the secrets will blow up in your face and likely hurt others
Aww Jasnah's including Renarin
Well Shallan I'm glad you delegated investigating Shadesmar in this room to Jasnah, your judgement isn't entirely horrible
I do relate to some degree to that uncertain adulthood thing, but Shallan really is not on a great path right now
Helaran was of the Skybreakers ooo
But didn't have a real Shardblade?
Uli Da? Ooo who is she.
Oh hey exposition on the factions
It is kind of cool how there secretly have been Radiants of one order this whole time
Oh, that's why Shallan's mother...she was close to a Skybreakers acolytes
Someone else in Amaram's army bonded a spren and was eliminated?
If it was Tien...
Heh this letter deserves further investigation cause Pattern is right, this is half truths
This Veil thing is getting seriously concerning. I mean I understand the value of having an escape and sides to yourself that others don't know and secrets that are nice to keep to oneself but this is getting a bit deep.
Also I feel like encouraging disparaging yourself among your employees isn't a good idea
Heh it's the opposite of that undercover boss skit
"I heard that Shallan has a six pack"
I mean it is good to learn from them but I don't think that is Shallan's intent
What happened to the scholar?
Well Gaz, that's a light way of putting, I tried to kill Kaladin on his very first day and was awful to all of them
Shallan do listen to them. Be a leader and give your soldiers purpose.
Also what happened to those slaves you took Shallan. Did you just leave them behind. Seriously you should have freed them from the start.
Oh dear this Ghostbloods fangirl is going to be a problem
Heh if someone asks Shallan to start investigating Veil the Ghostblood’s spy as Adolin is investigating Sadeas's murder that would be hilarious
Okay this is an interesting turn of events. Learning how to spy by testing someone's spying abilities by having them train you a spy network of soldiers. I'm curious to see how this goes...Shallan.
This Shard concerns me. Also is super arrogant. "If Rayse becomes an issue, he will be dealt with. And so will you."
Teft!
Now will we finally learn what you are up to?
Oh no is it drugs?
What happened to you in such a short span? You were the reliable one helping train all the other Bridge crews.
Firemoss? That's the only drug we've heard of right?
Yep, firemoss.
Ugh Sadeas's soldiers can't stop being awful can they
Oh no addicted and suicidal Teft no
Oh no seeing things. People or spren?
Please don't let Kaladin know his absence contributed to this he already suffers enough
Yep a spren
Teft you're so close yet so far you're actually talking to a spren but like so many Radiants really need some help to move forward
YES BRIDGE FOUR INTERVENTION
BEING THERE FOR EACH OTHER
Hopefully Kaladin's medical knowledge will help here
Teft why why Sanderson must Bridge Four members suffer but at least they're there for each other
"Cephandrius, bearer of the First Gem"
Hmm is that "the element" mentioned in the first letter
Also this Shard is arrogant. I don't care if they're a god.
Dalinar why are you putting Gawx through this the child does not deserve this
Huh so Jasnah found something interesting indeed during that vision
Hehe Jez has dark eyes excellent make those lighteyes uncomfortable
Oh hey a dead or partially dead Aimian
Gawx does have a point, Dalinar could just be crafting whatever visions strengthen his argument
Heh of course the Azish would see the Alethi with a code of law barely 30 years old as barbaric
I'm so proud of Gawx. Admittedly he knew a lot even before taking on this intense role as emperor. Just the knowledge and eloquence.
Also the Sunmaker is horrible.
Ten percent?
Oh god.
And then the Alethi honor his example. Yeah the Azish really have good reason not to trust the Alethi. This long break between Desolations really did allow people to do awful things and engender distrust.
I still am amused by how Sadees is one step away from Sadeas
YES LIFT IS HERE YES YES YES YES YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
LIFT I MISSED YOU SO
heh she's still bitter about the pancakes
Also she can enter this even though she's not presently with Gawx? Connection I guess
Heh she's baffling even the Stormfather
Half in the Cognitive Realm does lead to some fun things
Pale white eyes? I didn’t realize she had those? Unless it’s just the Wyndleblade/Shardfork effect?
LIFT
I'M DYING HERE
"He's got too nice a butt"
Lift I love you
I mean in classic Lift fashion her argument actually does have logic behind it, as unconventional as it is
Wait why does that uniform look weird oh god the patch is gone Moaaash
"You have spoken to one who cannot respond. We, instead, will take your communication to us-though we know not how you located us upon this world." kind of lost you there
Anyways back to crying about Moash and how he lost Bridge Four and Horneater stew
He still has his coat?
Nooo not the Bridge Four patch
But Moash, Kaladin couldn't bear to tell Bridge Four
Good move starting this chapter in a twisted reflection of the nights of stew and comradely of Bridge Four
Graves is dead?
That is not a turn I expected I thought Moash would be solidly with the Diagram
Well Moash's concerns about not being in Shardplate proved true
I'm having feelings about Kaladin saving Moash even now via the training
Oh no Fused with Surges
Friction and Gravitation seen so far
Do they all have two or one
Don't let them get the Plate
Yeah spears over swords!
Kaladin's training, saving lives when he can’t be there personally
Does she have Friction and Gravitation at once? Different combinations of Surges?
Ah they can't heal though
But where do they get the dark light
Szeth said something about them supposedly being able to hold it perfectly so they don't need recharging as much, but then are also more limited?
Oh noooo
Don't give them the Shards
Oh noooo
This is probably worse than being with the Diagram
This is so much worse
Angst is coming
But woah
Are those
Oh my god are those skyships? We're getting fabrials skyships?
That go above the storms with sails pointing down toward them?
Eeee
Vaguely crustacean vaguely sci-fi skyships!
"We are indeed intrigued, for we thought it well hidden. Insignificant among our many realms." Wait are there Shards with more than one world? I am so confused.
Ooh spies freelance or working for highprinces
The idea of being watched everywhere always makes me a tad uncomfortable even as the concept of observing is intriguing. Really this whole spying versus scouting thing is something I really should be delving into with my own story but that’s a tangent
Heh the mind museum trick I know that one not that I ever used it
I am really getting concerned about the multiple personalities
Oh hey by the way I'm still worried about Moash. Just thought I should mention that.
It's scary to think of how much Shallan has changed. She used to be excited about learning, about being part of things. She's splintered now.
I want to be in the room where it happens the room where it happens seriously that room has so many interesting conversations going on
Shallan barely read those books Adolin gave her?
She had the promise to become one of the greatest scholars of her time. It’s making me really sad.
Ooh yes they're talking about the ships yesss
Ugh this cuts a bit too familiar
Surrounded by brilliant smart people, but not taking advantage of it, feeling left behind, overwhelmed, not living up to your potential of scholarship...
Going from being excited to missing appointments
Changing, losing pieces of oneself
Well at least my identity  issues aren't as bad
Cause oh god Shallan just thinking of taking in different masks and forgetting who she is
Forgetting this partially started with her wanting to be a scholar
Shallan's really being left behind
Not growing, just escaping
But hey Navani is hosting a meeting of smart people that is awesome
Yes for Jasnah supporting Renarin thank you
Is that Evi's chain he's fidgeting with?
I want to be at this meeting
Ever since Amaram I'm suspicious of every stormwarden. I don't know it they're all with the Sons of Honor or not but still.
Elthebar is a jerk interrupting women and insulting them at a science meeting
I'd like to punch all the people insulting and laughing at Renarin please and thank you
(Also I guess it's development for Shallan to go from wanting Renarin muffled to being angry at the Alethi court's treatment of him...or is it just jealousy)
Oh dear Shallan that isn't even some of your quality banter
Shallan is lacking in female friends and it is sad
Aww Jasnah feeling she's been a bad mentor to Shallan
Oh hey Renarin and Shallan getting along that's much better and Shallan agreeing with Renarin's assessment also good
Also the city being one giant fabrial is pretty cool
Heh I love the sentiment of we could stand up to Jasnah but she's usually right about things
Oh please don't go on that mission to Kholinar I know I wanted a woman in the party but I do not want any love triangle nonsense
Aww Dalinar being there for Renarin
If Moash meets the Parshmen Kaladin trained that would be hilarious
You were also trained and protected by Kaladin Stormblessed? Wow we're everywhere.
(The idea that there are more of them around now because some actually do live)
"As the waves of the sea must continue to surge, so must our will continue resolute. Alone." I am so confused but so concerned
Pfft I wanted a pov in Revolar even though I knew Kaladin had to leave and now we've got one
It's comforting to know that the Voidbringers don't seem to have the same mastery of Surges as the Radiants. At least for now.
Huh eaves culture I've also been considering that for my own worldbuilding
Wonder if he'll hear of Kaladin's wind stunt
Oh no don't do that. I knew it would happen because the Fused are in charge but don't counteract slavery with slavery
The irony that Moash is a slave now after being one of the Bridge Four members that technically wasn't a slave
I really did not see this turn coming and I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes
Hehe I wonder what will happen when Kaladin sees Moash's Shardblade on the battlefield
Huh Moash's backstory in the caravans comes into play nothing is wasted
Oh no the awful lighteyes is in charge of them, there's hierarchy and why they're all slaves and yet
Well Moash, you're right on the brokenness of humanity, wrong on Kaladin not being broken
Kaladin just fought to be something beyond broken and brought others up with him
This is messed up
But hey, Moash is heading toward the battle eventually that way
Alright definitely a Shard that isn't Cultivation since they don't care about Roshar, my guess is Autonomy
Skar!
"When the dream dies" is a concerning chapter title
Good news, most of Bridge Four can draw in Stormlight. Bad news, Skar, Dabbid, and Rlain can't.
Wonder how the scout ladies are doing?
Under six minutes for over a mile with a pack hm wish we had exact measurements is Roshar mile even a mile is a minute even a minute I'm curious about pacing and how fast you can run with Stormlight
Huh lashing plus Stormlight to improve running speed
I would not want to feel like I was running downhill forever it's hard on the knees and I instinctively pull back lest i fall
Teft I worry about you
Chouta returns!
Bridge Four having issues but still supporting one another yes
I'm so proud of how far they've come but ouch Skar the feeling of falling behind especially cause he was one of the naturals with a spear
Kaladin why are you late but Teft how dare you say that about Kaladin.
He's trying. He has to be there for Bridge Four and also be the one advocating for not mass murder as a solution to things
Ah things are not all well
"Finally deigned to arrive" that wording bothers me I'm protective of Kaladin
They still haven't realized that those talented people probably won't stand a chance of becoming a squire unless they fix their Connection problem
Which they'd better cause I want female Windrunners
Oh hey Koen from the old cobalt guard joined Bridge Four
That's clever swapping two groups for the same amount of Stormlight as one
Aww they found the room of Listener art
Plateau runs still happen? That's bizarre if reasonable.
I have feels about that bridge
Aww Rock's kids setting up a water station
I'm curious about this Elhokar mission cause there's so much of the book left so it can't be the climax
Kaladin. Team bonding. Not drills. That is the secret.
They're flying I'm so proud
No Skar you are part of Bridge Four glow or not
Okay good Lyn and Skar get solidarity that helps with Connection right?
Yes a world where rank and eye color don't matter would be nice. It's not so simple and it's certainly not automatic but at least there's hope for change
Huh Skar was aware of what Kaladin did with the arrows that early on
Oh right Skar is a teacher this is helpful for him
YES LYN YES
Heh and Skar only learns to glow when he feels content with just helping others
This is a feel good chapter
I'm so happy
YES JASNAH CHAPTER AT LAST
Oh god some of them admire Rayse's "initiative"? Who would have been the correct one?
I am more concerned about the Shards than ever before, and about Sazed on the battlefield with the old crowd who know so much more
Yes I want more Ivory content
Jasnah's so cautious
Also I appreciate how she had a backup of her notes
Huh we never got a scene of Shallan returning the notes she retrieved from Jasnah's trunk. Where are they. Also the drawing.
Oh okay so she probably got the notes back
I'm glad Jasnah has a spren friend to talk to. She's not entirely alone.
Also of course her spren is also logical.
Ah she's worried about Shallan
I want to give Jasnah a hug
What happened to her?
"A childhood illness nobody else seemed to remember...it had taught her that people she loved could still hurt her."
Oh god she fears madness. Losing the intellect she relies upon, not being able to trust fact. What was that one time she couldn't rely on her mind.
Of course the scholar gets inkspren
The idea that culture was almost entirely lost among many spren due to the Recreance and is barely starting to recover yikes
Cryptics really do have a reputation.
Inkspren war with Honorspren?
Huh Ivory is a fitting defiant name
So Honorspren seek rule over Shadesmar? It doesn't feel like Honor.
Huh there's some poetry to the Skybreakers not ending in death but living in it instead
Oh.
Jasnah knows.
Wit knew and now Jasnah knows.
And she's tough enough to withstand it.
And she's working on Oathbringer.
I love how it makes so much sense she's on the cover. It's Dalinar's flashback book but Jasnah is the one writing the book and holding the deep secret
I still want the Jasnah and Wit road trip

calm among the chaos
HOW could have I not illustrated that scene?! :D
I will never cease to chuckle at that awkward soldier with that bowl of fruit. He has no idea how he got there.
