Zuppa Toscana With Heritage Pork Sausage & Wild Boar Bacon
Zuppa toscana is a traditional Italian soup originating in Tuscany. It’s really easy to make and full of flavor with a little kick (if you desire) from crushed red pepper. Our heritage pork mild Italian sausage was practically made for this recipe, and it’s a match made in heaven with our wild boar bacon. This flavorful soup is delicious, creamy and satisfying with thinly sliced potatoes and chopped kale. It’s a real crowd pleaser and perfect for soaking up with breadsticks.
Ingredients:
🍴 1 lb heritage pork mild Italian sausage 🍴 Crushed red pepper 🍴 5 slices wild boar bacon, roughly chopped 🍴 1 large onion, diced 🍴 3 cloves of garlic, minced 🍴 Sea salt to taste 🍴 8 ½ cups bison bone broth 🍴 6 red potatoes, sliced thin 🍴 1 cup cream 🍴 2 cups chopped kale (stems removed). https://bit.ly/3pkPvI2

more insight on miles’ puerto rican heritage for your fics or fanart
- traditional quinceañeras (or as they are often called by puerto ricans quinceañeros) are really not that common anymore, most girls nowadays have pool parties or go on a cruise. if miles were to go to one of his cousins’ 15 birthday party, chances are it would be casual— no big poofy dress (his mom probably had one like that though)
edit: some people disagree on this. depends on how traditional your family and friend group is I guess, as well as which part of the island you’re from. on average, it seems to be a far bigger deal amongst some other latines. in my class in pr only 3 out of approx 30 girls had a big event like that. not a single one of my cousins had a traditional quince either so you could say I’m partly biased bc of my own experiences. i personally just had a big pool party
- plantains are a big part of our diet. also, pr being an island in the caribbean, coconut is in a lot of our desserts. if miles had to pick a favorite fruit I hc he’d pick either one of the two lol also please google our food, our food isn’t actually spicy so much as savory
- we “celebrate” thanksgiving like other americans. it’s about the only time we eat oven roasted turkey. for winter holidays (christmas eve/day, new years eve/day, three kings day/eve) oven roasted pork. chicken might be offered as a second option for people who don’t consume pork for whatever reason
- you’re pretty much taught how to dance as soon as you can walk. most of us have basic rhythms down. chances of miles dancing with his mom or friends at parties? astronomically high.
- the reason why our flag is everywhere, besides pride, is ‘cause it was illegal to own it. look up the gag law that prohibited us from even displaying it at our homes. so it’s actually an awesome detail in these movies
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- this is my opinion/a fun fact but I feel like miles is basically an homage to black and puerto rican (specifically nuyorican) solidarity around the 70s-80s during the creation of hip-hop and rise of graffiti as a form of expression (you can easily read up on this or watch shows like the get down to learn more about this if you’re curious)
- whether you’re “nuyorican” or “from the island” spanglish is common so miles’ mixing english and spanish isn’t odd bc even rio does this as miles points out in the party scene. he isn’t a “no sabo” kid so much as someone with a strong accent. he understands his mom perfectly
- race ≠ ethnicity. there are plenty of black people in and from Puerto Rico, and miles’ pr family in the spiderverse films are designed to be for the most part afro-latine. so I wouldn’t really call him biracial
- the puerto rican day parade wouldn’t be a thing he skips, he’s gifted a special suit for it in a comic run. his puerto rican heritage is important to him!

Hey shoutout to the Jewish converts/people who are re-embracing their heritage who are struggling with keeping tradition. Keeping kosher when you've grown up eating pork and meat+dairy is hard. Scheduling your week to keep Saturday clear is hard. Getting the High Holy Days off of work/school is hard. Not just externally, either; all these things require a ton internal discipline. And I just want to say, to everyone who's struggling rn: it's okay if you fall short. It's okay if you don't always have the mental/emotional strength to give up *every social norm you've grown up with* all at once. Heck, I still sometimes give into weakness and get a pepperoni pizza instead of the kosher options. And that's the thing: nobody's perfect. Shits hard. Everyone misses the mark sometimes. And that's ok. The important thing is that we try to do better tomorrow (and if we miss the mark tomorrow too, there's always another day).

Nikaposting Pt 1: Crypto-Religion
This is the first of a series of posts about Nika & associated religious practice in the One Piece world. As I write and post the rest of the series, I’ll add links to this header.
Pt 2: Symbology & Syncretism | Pt 3: Joyboy was Shandian | Pt 4: Sun God Tropes
Enormous credit to @oriigami for being my discussion partner through all of this and having a substantial influence on the final product. Check out our ao3 series Joyful for a narrative rather than analytical take on the Nika tradition, and definitely go read her OP blog @kaizokuou-ni-naru for meta and translation fun facts.
-
The Nika Cult is a Crypto-Religion
Terminology note: I will be using cult in these posts in the sense of “cult of worship,” rather than in the modern pejorative sense. Additionally, I tend to use “tradition” rather than “religion” as a general term, because “religion” is a messy and difficult to define concept, while “tradition” is much more inclusive of traditional practices, folk beliefs, and cults of worship that may not be considered religions by Western scholarship.
Raise your hand if you saw Kuma’s church and Bible, concluded “oh, the Nika stuff is basically One Piece Christianity,” and moved on with your life.
It’s an easy assumption to make, and for all I know authorial intent may well stop there. I’m not Oda. I’ll never be able to guess what goes on behind those fish eyes of his. But a second look at the worldbuilding around both Nika and Christianity in One Piece brought me to a very different conclusion: that the Nika cult is a crypto-religion and is, in Kuma’s case, using the outward appearance of Christianity as camouflage.
First of all: We have ample evidence that Christianity (or some variation of it- I’m fascinated by the implied existence of such things as One Piece Jerusalem and the One Piece Council of Nicea) does exist in the One Piece world, and is both fairly widespread and quite legal. Flevance was pretty explicitly Catholic (Law went to church as a kid), Miss Monday and Mother Carmel masqueraded as nuns to imply harmlessness, many if not most of the graves shown in the series are crosses, whatever Usopp was on about with that exorcism equipment, and, yes, Kuma’s church and Bible.
Even mentioning the Nika cult, on the other hand, is grounds for the government to assassinate you with extreme prejudice.
A crypto-religion is what happens when a religion is suppressed to the point that its practice is grounds for exile, torture, and/or execution: Some people will convert. Some people will flee into exile. Some people will die. And some people will outwardly adopt the dominant religion, but will continue to practice their own traditions in secret; ie, they’ll create a crypto-religion.
One of the more famous examples of this is the post-Spanish Inquisition crypto-Jews of Spain and Portugal, who converted to Christianity in public but kept what Jewish traditions and rituals they could in private. To this day, descendants of these conversos whose families have been Catholic for centuries are discovering that their family tradition of lighting two candles on Friday or not eating pork on Saturday are in fact the legacy of a violently suppressed heritage. There are countless other examples of crypto-religions throughout history, both among Jews (my own personal field of knowledge) and among other traditions (for an example that would be known to Oda, the crypto-Christians of Japan).
There’s no way the Nika cult could have survived except in cryptic form. If it ever had physical infrastructure in the form of temples or pilgrimage sites, the government would have sought them out and demolished them long ago if they were not adequately disguised, especially in World Government member states like the Sorbet Kingdom. Likewise, anyone foolish enough to speak publicly about Nika will be summarily assassinated.
In fact, I have doubts that the Nika cult ever existed outside cryptic form, at least in a significant or long-lasting manner. It was specifically introduced as a slave tradition, likely nigh-exclusively oral, practiced in secret either from its inception—if Nika was a figure created by slaves, including the buccaneers—or for a very long time—if it was the cultural or ethnic tradition of the buccaneers, which spread from enslaved buccaneers to non-buccaneer slaves because Nika was a figure that resonated with them. I tend the favor the second option, but either has merit.
As @oriigami said when we were talking about this, Kuma has a church. Kuma has a bible. Kuma worships a god about whom absolutely nothing is written except in the oldest texts.
Additionally, I’ll expand on this more in pt 2 of this series, but the pendant Kuma leaves for Bonney, a large circular sapphire surrounded by eight smaller circular sapphires, matches the circular symbol inset into the crosses of his church. Bonney immediately identifies the pendant as a sun even though it really doesn’t look like one, and it can be surmised therefore that it’s a Nika amulet, and the sun with disconnected rays a Nika symbol. Following this read, and especially because this symbol occurs across the world in other contexts (see pt 2 for my thoughts on that), its presence in the church is a very careful bit of architectural sleight of hand on the part of whichever of Kuma’s ancestors built the place- echoing a very common practice of real-world crypto-religion adherents to mark the true nature of their allegiances and houses of worship in ways only those in the know might recognize.
And on a storytelling level, Kuma’s entire presence in the narrative and in the world has been a tragic saga of appearing to be one way until he’s revealed, again and again, to be the opposite. It makes thematic sense for him to be fooling the world about his faith as well!

Writing Jewish Characters (what not to do, according to one jewish gal on discord) (a probably incomplete list):
(For reference, because I say it a few times: goyische = not Jewish, or relating to non-Jewish things/culture/etc)
Preface:
Many of these are things that some Jews do irl for various personal reasons, and that is 1000% valid and fine!! This is in no way dragging any Jew’s life choices whatsoever. When it comes to representation, there is a huge skew in one direction: the Jew-ish, bacon cheeseburger-loving, Xmas-celebrating, modern Jew whose nagging, kvetching Jewish family comes up for a special holiday or life event episode and is never heard from again. The implication is that Jewish traditions don’t fit modern people/society and that a non-Jewish audience can’t connect with a Jewish character who remains close to their cultural roots. All that to say, this piece is all about representation, not necessarily irl accuracy.
Primer:
Jewish characters don’t have to be “religious,” and definitely not in the way you might conceive of a religious Xtian character. But being an irreligious Jew doesn't inherently mean they won't follow any Jewish rituals or holidays. It’s a culture as much as it is a religion, and there are a million reasons an atheist Jew (not an oxymoron!) might follow any of these rituals/rules, including but not limited to cultural heritage, community, and religious family/friends <3
Eating treif (aka never-kosher food like pork and shellfish):
They don’t have to keep kosher (altho that would be a very welcome change just one (1) time ksdjg), just don’t make them actively not kosher. I know it feels super innocuous to talk about Erik Lensherr grabbing a bacon egg and cheese from the bodega, but it sticks out to me every time because it is, in itself, a statement. If that's a statement you want to be making, think about why. What are you trying to add to this Jewish character by giving him bacon, or shrimp, or a cheeseburger, etc etc. And is it something you think is a positive addition, or is the implication just that not eating bacon is silly, or outdated, or only something super duper religious Jews could ever want to do? If so, maybe skip the shrimp. It’s a tiny thing that can really make a big difference.
True bonus points: actively have the character keep a semblance of kosher. A simple, 2-second choice for a character to turn down a bite of their coworker’s pork fried rice because they’re Jewish feels SO NICE to read in an ocean of Jewish characters eating treif.
A lot of media codes Jewish characters by drawing attention to the fact that they’re eating bacon, even though they “shouldn’t.” Very little media codes Jews by having them leave the cheese off their burger.
(And if you do write them eating non-kosher, a friendly reminder that Jews who don’t keep kosher don’t think about how disappointed their mother would be everytime they bite into a piece of bacon. They just eat it lol.)
Interfaith parents/“half-Jews”:
I feel it necessary to reassure with this one in particular that there is nothing wrong with this, and both matrilineal and patrilineal Jews deserve representation. This is common enough irl and if they identify with the Jewish side of their heritage to consider themselves Jewish, that’s great! Variety is the spice of life. Once again, I want to emphasize that I am not making any judgments on irl Jews in any of these complaints.
This is only up for representation discussion because this feels like another trend in media and fandom, where it seems like one parent is Certified Not Jewish™️ almost as an excuse to…have Jewish characters not have to be Jewish except in name. Interfaith families are almost always shown mainly celebrating Xtian holidays, with a tiny nod to Judaism: agiant Xmas tree with a menorah to the side, or an Easter episode with a throwaway mention of Passover (if anything). Mainstream media especially will do either this, or have both parents be Jewish and the main character be such a ~disappointment~ to their parents for being less so, and of course falling into lots of icky stereotypes along the way.
Basically just, don’t not write interfaith characters, but be careful with them. Please don’t use interfaith characters as your reason excuse to let them do the Goyische Stuff, like celebrating Xmas. And speaking of…
Christmas (derogatory):
My opinion on Jewish characters celebrating Xmas, my prayer hands and shameless begging, is just…please don’t do it. I get it, plenty of irl Jews participate in Xmas activities or even celebrate it with their friends and extended families, that’s fine, absolutely no judgment. But without getting into the whole shebang of christian hegemony and the myth of secular Christmas, that’s already EVERYWHERE. Almost every tv show, every movie that has Xmas in it, if there’s a Jewish character, there’s a solid 98% chance they celebrate Xmas too. Maybe even LOVE it. Maybe there’s even a confused goyische friend going, “aren’t you Jewish?” and the Xmas-loving Jew happily informs them why that doesn’t matter, or how actually only their dad is Jewish (and he loves Xmas too so woo!) so they get to do the whole Xmas shebang and maybe have a lil menorah off to the side for the token representation.
Jews who participate in or celebrate Xmas exist, but this is a reminder that those who don’t also exist, and they are not remotely uncommon. And we don’t feel deprived for not having had Xmas, I promise. Go against the grain! For lols you can even have your Jewish character be half clueless about Xmas traditions because he never had them! Ben Grimm who has no idea what a garland is and at this point he’s too afraid to ask. There’s so much you can do with it and have fun with in a way that still keeps your Jewish blorbo unassimilated <3
There Was Only One Jew:
Most content has one (1) Jew and that’s that. It’s almost like there’s a rule that there can only be one (1) Jew per friend group. If you have more than one Jewish character, then slay! More Jews are always welcome, and the more you have, the more leeway there is, imo. It feels less egregious for, e.g., a Jewish character to loooooove shrimp if you’ve got another in the story who’s never touched it in his life and never plans to. (Although, when deciding which characters to do this with, consider making the more observant one your main, instead of relegating them to the background and/or parental characters.)
In Summary…
Thanks for reading!! There’s no one way to write Jewish characters, but I hope this helped give you something to think about! I’m always happy to answer questions if you want to learn more. You can also check out the Jewish and Judaism tags on the Writing With Color blog if you want to hear opinions from other Jews. (Not affiliated, just love their blog, haha!) These are just my thoughts on these things after reading a lot of Jewish characters (canon or headcanoned) in fic. 😊
B’hatzlacha! <3

Hot Tamales | Ghost x Canis! OC + TF-141 + Los Vaqueros
Pairing: Ghost x f! OC
Warnings: language, the bois simp for food
Edited: No
A/N: A little post for Hispanic Heritage Month, a day after it ‘ended,’ but it’s always Hispanic Heritage Month for me lol. My mom and I made tamales a few weeks back and that kinda inspired this. I know it’s not what you’re expecting that I update but I wanted to get this posted even though it’s late. This could be considered part of the It’s The Dog series but as a separate one shot. Canis is Mexican but it can be read as any Latina Reader.

For the last day or so, Johnny not Ghost could find Canis and both were beginning to get a bit worried. So, Johnny asked around the base they were on if anyone had seen her. No luck until one of Alejandro’s Corporals said that she had been in the mess’ kitchen. Quickly sending a text to Ghost, Johnny made his way to the mess hall.
An incredible aroma came from the large room the closer down the hall he went. Ghost was already standing at the doors waiting for him.
“Ah, that smells so good L.t.” He grinned at the taller man.
“Very good.” Ghost replied, shockingly in approval.
Johnny was just about to push the doors open when a loud bang sounded from down the hall. It was Alejandro and Rudy.
“Te dije, Rudy! The smell is coming from here!” The Colonel shouted. “Mmm… tengo hambre.”
“You were right, Ale. But who’s making them?” The two men jogged to where Soap and Ghost were standing.
“You know what’s goin’ on, Alejandro?” Johnny questioned. “It smells really good! What is it?”
“No idea, amigo! Those are tamales!” He shook Johnny’s shoulder. “Don’t tell me you’ve never tried tamales before?”
Johnny shook his head and when Alejandro looked at Ghost, he also denied ever having them. Both Mexicans shook their heads.
“Oh, you’re missing out!” Rudy looked at them with pity.
“It’s only one of the finest dishes Mexican cuisine has to offer.” Ale added. “You’re in for a treat!”
They finally head in and see that a decent sized crowd had formed around the kitchen doorway. Many of them were practically drooling at the delicious smell. They made their way through the crowd and inside they saw Canis.
Rudy called out to her first, “Canis! You’re the one making tamales?”
She turned around at his voice. “Rudy, sí. I’ve been prepping since yesterday and now the tamales are steaming. I think they’ll be ready in about ten minutes. Think you boys can wait?”
Canis was wearing an apron that had the Los Vaqueros logo on the front. Earlier that day, she decided she would make one with the 141’s logo on it. It was stained with mole, pork, and masa. There was a very large pot behind her on the stove filled to the brim with tamales. The food station was relatively clean after the mess she had made the previous day and that morning. She’d taken the time to put everything away and clean up. Although, there were still some corn husks left on the table.
“Of course we can wait, lass!” Johnny called out from behind Ghost. Whose body took up much of the doorway.
Then the group had the others waiting around go to sit at the tables while they waited for the tamales to finish cooking. When the ten minutes were up, the mess staff helped Canis distribute the tamales to the voraciously hungry soldiers and staff. They thought that the tamales would be gone by then but out came Canis with a large warming platter filled with tamales.
“I saved a bunch for you guys, and there’s more in the freezer to be steamed later on.” Canis smiled at them, placing the platter of tamales onto the table. She gestured to the food. “Go ahead.”
Alejandro and Rudy were quick to place a hot tamale on their plates. They were not as careful to spread apart the corn husks and dug into the steaming meal.
“Ah-Ah!” The two sucked in air to their mouths to cool off their burning tongues.
Canis shook her head at the two traviesos. “Con cuidado! You’ll burn your tongues.”
“It tastes better when they’re hot and fresh.” Alejandro panted, still cooling his mouth. Canis rolled her eyes at him.
On the other hand, the Brit and the Scot were going at their food at a much slower pace. They seemed to be enjoying themselves.
“This is good, Canis.” Ghost looked at her.
“Thank you, Ghost.” She smiled and her cheeks burned. Alejandro cleared his throat.
“If a woman makes you tamales, she’s probably in love with you.” Alejandro smirked at her. The other men whipped their heads to look at her with wide eyes. Ghost squinted at her, an unfamiliar emotion in his dark eyes. Canis’ brow rose in question. “Who on the team have you fallen for, amiga?”
“No one, Alejandro. I just wanted to make some tamales for everyone.” She side-eyed him. “It’s my Abuelita’s recipe. I was feeling a bit homesick so I made these to help cheer me up.”
Ghost hummed while Rudy and Johnny nodded their heads.
“They’re the best thing I’ve ever eaten, and I’ve eaten lots of things, lass.” Johnny complimented.
Canis chuckled. “I’m glad you guys are enjoying it.” She fiddled with her fingers. “I was worried that I’d mess it up or something. I even messaged my Abuelita about a few things.”
“Nothing to worry about Canis! They’re the most delicious tamales I’ve ever had.” Alejandro went to go back to eating but jolted upright. “Don’t tell my mama I said that!”
Canis and Rudy burst out laughing. Johnny grinned at them and Ghost ignored them. He basically inhaled the whole tamale in three bites, and was glancing at the plate of tamales.
Canis noticed.
“Who wants seconds?”
~~~~~
Bonus:
“They remind me of my grandmother’s tamales.” Rudy teared up. “I miss her.”
“Ayy, don’t cry Rudy.” She pat his back. “Here, have another tamale.”
Canis placed another wrapped tamale on his plate before turning back to the stove to finish cleaning up. She didn’t see the glint in his eyes nor the smirk on his lips, but Alejandro did.
“Rudy, you cabrón! That’s your fourth one!”
The Most Perfect Pan Seared Heritage Pork Rib Chops
If you haven’t experienced our incredible heritage pork rib chops yet, you’re in for a treat. These are the thickest, most marbled rib chops we have ever seen and the best we’ve ever tasted. These chops become buttery and tender when cooked – they’re like the ribeye of the pig. One of these can easily feed two people and turns out incredibly moist, juicy and like no other pork chop you’ve ever experienced before. This simple recipe uses El Maujelo premium reserve sherry vinegar. However, you can definitely substitute balsamic vinegar or even apple cider vinegar if it’s what you have on hand. The same goes for the cooking oil. I like to use melted bison tallow, avocado oil or ghee, but don’t hesitate to substitute your cooking oil of preference.
Ingredients:
🍴 2 heritage pork rib chops 🍴 Bison tallow or avocado oil 🍴 Sea salt & freshly ground black pepper 🍴 6 cloves of garlic, peeled 🍴 ¼ cup reserve sherry vinegar. https://bit.ly/2OlhSZm
I don't know if you're the right person to be asking, but I was hoping you could help me out with a question. Just saw an article on a Spanish town that was named "Fort Kill the Jews" and how a Jewish family moving in was "greeted" with bigoted graffiti. It brought to mind some old comments I had heard from some Jewish people on here (I think), which is that Spain has a very long history of antisemitism. Like, such a bad history with the Jewish people that antisemitism is baked into their actual culture (the tons and tons of pork dishes was one of the examples I got when I asked.)
I was wanting to know if you could provide any background to that, or confirm if there is any truth to it. Obviously, there is antisemitism there, considering a town with that name not only exists, but was allowed to stand with that name for 400 years. But as for the sheer volume and history of Spain's antisemitism, I haven't been able to find anything that provides a clear answer when I've Googled it. Mostly, it just pulls up articles of this current event and nothing else.
TLDR: my question is, I guess, is Spain as steeped in cultural antisemitism as I've been told?
Yes.
Yes, yes, yes, a thousand times yes.
Spain has a long, long history of antisemitism, spanning not just from Christian rule but to even Muslim rule.
You may or may not have heard of the term "Sephardi Jews". Sephardi Jews are Jews who are descendents of those whose ancestors once made a home in the Iberian peninsula after the Jews were expelled from the land of Israel. "Sephardi" literally means "Spanish". Now, most Sephardi Jews today live in North Africa, West Asia, South West Asia, France, England, Israel, and the US. You may notice that Spain is not on the list. Why?
Well let me tell you about the Spanish Inquisition.
The Spanish Inquisition hit it's height in 1492, when the Alhambra Decree was enacted expelling all Jews and Muslims from Spain under the threat of death. Before that, Jews had slowly been being put in ghettos and restricted from public life across Spain.
But things didn't end once the Jews were purged in 1492. No, for the next few centuries, crypto-Jews, Jews who converted to Christianity but maintained their Jewish heritage, were persecuted and killed by the Spanish Inquisition. Many fled to the Americas and established communities in the Caribbean, South America, and Central America. But they still weren't safe from the Inquisition, because the Inquisition had control over the colonies as well. Many Jews died.
But there was antisemitism in Spain even before Christians took over. Jewish culture thrived in Al Andalus, but that doesn't mean antisemitism wasn't still a threat. Jewish people were at the mercy of whoever ruled at the time. Sometimes, they were friendly to the Jews. Sometimes, they weren't. And Jews were always subject to dhimmi laws which placed them as second-class citizens. Many people have heard of Samuel Ibn Naghrillah, the Jewish vizier and general to to King Badis Ibn Habus during the 10th century. He was regarded as one of the most influential Jews in Muslim Spain. But while he may have been able to attain great status despite his Dhimmitude, and was able to strengthen Jewish morale, there was still a lot of intense antisemitism within the people. When Samuel's son Joseph succeeded him, people let out their pent-up antisemitism. They were incensed that a Jew could hold such a high office. They crucified him on the city gates of Grenada, and massacred most of the Jewish population in the city.
But let's jump back to more recent times. During the Holocaust, Francisco Franco was the fascist ruler of Spain. While he may not have formally joined the Axis, he was a fascist and was sympathetic towards the Nazi movement. Under Franco, Jews were required to be registered to the government, and faced both governmental and social antisemitism.
And on a cultural level.....did you know that the reason Spanish food has so much pork and shellfish is because the Spanish would use it as a way to "sniff out" secret Jews and Muslims? Yeah. Let that sink in. It's that pervasive.
So yes, Spain is steeped in cultural and historic antisemitism.
Fuck it. Here is a family recipe in honor of Native American Heritage Month. There aren't measurements because you measure with your heart. Just season until the little old Native auntie in your mind tells you it's enough. Hunters Stew: Cubed beef - I use cheap ass stew meat because, yeah Cubed pork - get some cheap pork chops and cut them up Potatoes - whichever kind you have on hand/like. Either small ones or cut them up to a manageable size Carrots - I'm lazy and use baby carrots. You can use fancy ones if you want Squash/Pumpkin - This takes a bit of work, but a good butternut squash or pumpkin will do you well here Onions - Pearl is what I prefer, but diced or chopped up roughly will work too. It doesn't need to be refined Mushrooms - I'm lazy and use pre-sliced white ones. Use whatever you want or don't. I know mushrooms are hit or miss for people Seasonings - salt, pepper, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder Herbs - thyme, rosemary, bay leaf. These can be dried or fresh. You do you. Unsalted beef stock if you have it. Water and better than bouillion if you don't. (lay off the salt if you don't use the stock) Cut everything up into manageable sizes. If you feel ambitious, you can sear off the meat before the next step. Dump everything into a crockpot after you season it well and cook on low for 7-8 hours or high for 4-5. It's better on low. Use about a cup to a cup and a half of the stock. Use less if you choose to use frozen veggies. Check the seasoning throughout just to make sure you got it right. If you want a thicker sauce, mix in a slurry of cornstarch and water. Serve with bread to sop up the yummy juices.
Note
Do you eat pork or would that be cannibalism
A hawk will devour a cucco, and yet it is not cannibalism.
During my rage-induced state, I embolden the powers of both my demonic heritage as well as the Triforce of Power, granting me a boar-like form. But I am not a pure boar.
As such, there are no moral issues with eating pork for me.
Jewish Nathaniel Kurtzberg headcanons
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is canon that Nathaniel is Jewish, evident in his surname and absence from the Christmas special. However because "religion is a secular matter and cannot be portrayed in a children's TV show" (🙄), Nathaniel's heritage won't be represented in any of the episodes, so I'll be writing these headcanons.
Nathaniel (like Marinette, Adrien, and their classmates) was born between late 2000 and mid-2001.
The law on religious display in public schools (la loi sur les signes religieux dans les écoles publiques) was signed on March 15, 2004.
The law on face-coverings in public (la loi interdisant la dissimulation du visage dans l'espace public) was passed by the Senate on September 14, 2010.
TW for references of antisemitism and Islamophobia
Nathaniel's great-grandparents were German Jews who fled to France shortly before World War II
his family is not Orthodox but they are religious, they go to synagogue, celebrate the holidays, follow kosher, etc.
Nathaniel has always been a shy, quiet kid but his parents raised him to be assertive and to question authority if necessary
the first time Nathaniel realizes he is different is when he is three years old and starts preschool, during lunch he can't eat what the other children are eating in case the food is not kosher
his parents contact the preschool, who refuse to provide a kosher/pork-free option or let Nathaniel pack his own lunch, they compromise to let him go home for lunch instead
December rolls around, and the other children are excited about Christmas, except for Nathaniel, who is excited about Hanukkah but can't help but feel a bit left out
at six years old, another boy in his class starts running his hands through Nathaniel's hair out of the blue, "I heard that your people have horns, where are yours"
at eight years old, a girl in his class sees the gold Star of David necklace that Nathaniel always wears and starts bombarding him with questions
Nathaniel knows that she has no bad intentions but can't help feeling a bit uncomfortable and othered
at nine years old, during a class debate on the hijab ban, another boy says how anyone who wears their religious symbols are not truly French and should go back to where they came from, leaving Nathaniel flushing with shame and anger
at eleven years old, he begins attending Collège Françoise Dupont
on his first day of middle school, Principal Damoclés makes him remove his Star of David necklace
he is afraid but looks the principal straight in the eye and refuses, "this is my religion and my identity," he says, his heart pounding and his voice shaking
after a few more resists, Principal Damoclés suspends him
when he goes home to his confused parents, Nathaniel breaks down in tears as he explains Principal Damoclés suspending him on his first day of middle school for his necklace
his furious parents storm over to the school to confront the principal, demanding he allow their son back to school immediately and for him to wear the symbol of his religious pride
Principal Damoclés lets him back the next day but Nathaniel never wears his necklace to school again, only at home and in non-school settings
the day he returns to school, fellow classmate Alix Kubdel approaches him
Alix explains her family heritage: her family is of Algerian origin and Muslim, and while she can pass as white, her parents and brother have faced racism, Alix's mother have even had her hijab ripped off by an old white man on public transit and no one defended her
Nathaniel knows that he, as a white-presenting boy, cannot relate to the experiences of Alix or her mother, but appreciates having a friend who understands
he invited Alix to his bar mitzvah
he loves learning about the Holocaust, it is painful but his ancestors' strength and resilience make him proud, he can't stand how all of his classmates seem to stare at him during class whenever it comes up
in his third year, he is placed in Miss Bustier's class with Marinette Dupain-Cheng, Chloé Bourgeois, Sabrina Raincomprix, Rose Lavillant, Juleka Couffaine, Lê Chiến Kim and Max Kanté
when he arrives at school one morning he sees a swastika drawn in permanent marker on his desk, drawn by Chloé "Can't he make sushi like everyone else" Bourgeois
he reports it to a furious Miss Bustier, who sends Chloé to Principal Damoclés, who lets her off with a mere warning, which infuriates Nathaniel and his parents
as much as he wants to stay home from school the next day, Nathaniel is determined to not let Chloé win and shows up at school the next day
a sneering Chloé comes up to him, but before Chloé could open her mouth, fellow classmate Marinette Dupain-Cheng spoke up
"you suck, Chloé." Marinette glares at the blonde. "you speak of him as if he is below you, but he's got more nerve in his finger than your entire body"
Rose and Juleka join in, "Leave him alone, Chloé" "go pick on someone your own size, someone with an overinflated head like you"
Chloé started bullying Marinette
meanwhile, Nathaniel starts to fall for Marinette and becomes closer to Rose and Juleka
in the middle of his fourth and final year, he gets over his crush on Marinette/Ladybug and instead starts falling for Marc Anciel, with whom he works on their Ladybug comics
he confides his feelings for Marc to Alix
"you might be bi or pan," Alix, who is aromantic and an expert in LGBT terminology, explains to him
he first comes out as bisexual to Alix, who is nothing but incredibly supportive and proud of her best friend
Rose and Juleka (canon girlfriends!) are the next to know, and he grows closer to the girls than ever
Nathaniel is hesitant to come out to his parents, however: he feels like he is betraying the Jewish identity his parents instilled in him since childhood by coming out to them
he begins to research queer Jewish identity on the Internet and hears stories of others from all across the globe, who are queer, Jewish and proud
Nathaniel eventually asks out Marc, who agrees to be his boyfriend and he is happier than ever
Marc isn't Jewish but is more than happy to learn about Jewish culture and to fight anyone who dares to say anything antisemitic, whether about Nathaniel or not
since he started dating Marc, Nathaniel gains the courage to come out to his parents, who immediately accept him, much to his pleasant surprise
"you are our son, and our religion accepts everyone," his father says
"love is love, and if this boy Marc makes you happy, that's all that matters," his mother says
he gets into the same design school as Marc and Marinette for high school
in his first year of high school, he and Marc finally publish their Ladybug comics, which quickly become successful
towards his final years of high school, he begins studying for the baccalauréat while continuing his relationship with Marc and their comics and applying for his birthright trip
on his final year of high school, he passes the bac littéraire along with Marc and Marinette, and the three reunite with their middle school friends to celebrate
soon after graduating high school, he leaves for birthright (Alix cried buckets of tears at the airport)
the trip is the best ten days of his life, Nathaniel feels at home as he connects with other French Jews and Jews from across the globe and visits the cultural sites
shortly after his return to France, Nathaniel invites Marc to the Seine, where he gets down on one knee, much to the latter's delight (they both cry tears of joy that night)
his and Marc's wedding was the most beautiful day ever, they have a traditional Jewish wedding filled with ketubah, chuppah, glass breaking, joy, light and love
