Who: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson Prompt: Shaking Requested by: anonymous Warnings: descriptions of panic attack, anxiety. Very angsty!

The sounds of the cafeteria at lunch time were drowned out by the rushing sound in his ears. The plate of food in front of him had long grown cold, and the bite on his fork forgotten on the way to his mouth.

Trent's eyes were fixed on the television screen on the wall opposite him. Even though the sound of it was muted, Trent knew, unmistakably, who the people on the TV were talking about. Him.

His own photo smiled back at him from the screen. Beside that photo a various range of his stats from different seasons were displayed. All numbers from this season were well below the stats of last season, but Trent didn't need a television show to remind him of that. He knew very well on his own how he wasn't doing so well this season.

Trent only vaguely registered how his hands started to shake, and how the shaking quickly spread through his arms and shoulders, and before he knew it he was shaking all over. He felt how he slowly lost control over himself, but had no clue how to stop it. Trent wanted to scream, yell, thrash, but all he could do was sit still, frozen. His breaths were strained, his muscles tensed to their max, and he had no way to get himself out of this silent panic attack anymore.

"Come on, let's go get some fresh air." Trent was only half aware of Jordan resting his hands on his shoulders and gently urging Trent to get up.

The captain had seen his younger teammate struggling just now, and knew it would be best to get Trent someplace quiet. Jordan made sure to lead Trent away from the cafeteria and the rest of the team without attracting to much attention, before leading him out onto the terrace of their conference room. It was far away from prying eyes, so he hoped Trent would be able to calm down here.

The cool, Liverpool breeze washing over his face made that Trent finally took a real breath again, but he still couldn't get himself to stop shaking.

"What happened back there?" Jordan was the first to speak. His voice held pure concern, because he saw how Trent wasn't doing well at the moment. "I..." Trent hesitated. "It was the analysis on TV going on and on about how bad I'm doing this season. How I can't defend, how I can't attack, how I can't seem to do anything. And I just... need them to stop." His voice broke on the last word.

Jordan felt a lump in his throat. Trent didn't deserve this. Sure, his from wasn't the best lately, but the entire team's wasn't. And what none of the analysts on TV saw was how Trent worked his ass off to get things to go better. The endless effort and determination was completely lost on them, but Jordan saw it each and every day at training, team meetings and even during their time off.

Jordan reached out a hand to rest it on Trent's shoulder. The young Scouser looked so very defeated and vulnerable that Jordan feared he might fall apart completely at any second. "Nothing I can say is going to make it any easier," Jordan started, "but we can help you through it. Me, the team, the gaffer, everyone is here for you."

Trent looked up at his captain, the look of defeat still strong in his eyes. "I'm not used to asking for help. I don't know how to do it." Jordan smiled softly, reassuringly. "You just did." "Have I?" A small frown furrowed Trent's brow. "Having a silent panic attack in our cafeteria is a scream for help to me." Jordan squeezed Trent's shoulder. "And I'm here to help. Because silent or not: I heard it."

Trent didn't speak for a few seconds, letting the weight of Jordan's words sink in. "I need that." Trent finally confirmed quietly. "I need help. This is... too much. I can't do this alone anymore." "Come here." Jordan pulled Trent into a bear hug, his heart quietly breaking for his teammate and friend. "You'll be alright. I won't deny it's going to be tough, but you'll be alright." Trent nestled his face into Jordan's shoulder, soaking up his captain's comfort. "I hope so."

Jordan felt Trent still shiver and tremble in his arms, but he was confident about his words. He tightened his embrace around Trent. "Trust me. You'll be alright, and you'll come out of this stronger than ever."

Edinburgh women negotiate the gradients of the old town, bringing home their washing from the steamie

Bicep curls and thigh burning lunges, twists, lifts and muscle-aching stretches – it must have been the ultimate workout in the most unlikely of places.

These days we spend a small fortune on fitness classes and gym memberships. But in granny’s day, all you needed to shape up, was a few regular trips to the ‘steamie’.

Shoving a pram full of clothes and sheets to the wash house would have been one way to get the heart pumping – even before the back-breaking task of trying to lift sodden sheets and towels from the hot tub of soapy water into the cold one for a rinse.

Then feeding endless pairs of your man’s newly scrubbed dungarees through a hand mangle would probably have done more for keeping the bingo wings at bay than any number of Zumba classes.

The women who passed endless hours scrubbing and wringing, folding and hanging up also had the added benefit of the camaraderie of the wash house – a place where the banter could be as spicy as that of any male-dominated factory, the laughs just as raucous and the support network in times of need, vital.

Incredible as it sounds, Edinburgh’s wash houses were still operating in the early 1980s, nearly a century after concerns over the city’s terrible infant death toll, cholera and disease led to public health pioneers pushing for their construction.

The first wash house appeared 90 years earlier after it became clear that Edinburgh’s authorities had to step in to tackle a public health crisis.

Urban areas like the Old Town were so poor, they had no facilities for washing in the houses and a lot of places didn’t have running water,That led to diseases, in particular cholera, which spread through dirty clothing and beddinThe hope was that by providing public wash houses, they could start to sort out the terrible infant mortality.”

For many Old Town residents, wash day had involved a trip to the Nor Loch, to rinse out garments among the sewage and stench of slaughterhouse waste which flowed into the water. Others made do with public water fountains, dirty burns or whatever source of water they could find.

While Edinburgh’s authorities had the power from 1880 to begin construction of wash houses, there was a 12-year delay while efforts were made to find the right locations for the new facilities. Meanwhile in Glasgow, wash houses were already up and running.

Edinburgh’s first opened at St Gray’s Close in the Old Town in 1892 – and immediately locals were queuing out of the door in the hope of finally having clean clothing and bedding. Stockbridge wash house in Allan Street followed in 1903 and Simon Square at St Leonards in 1908.

Eventually there would be ten more built at locations across town: Greenside Lane, Lochrin at Tollcross, MacLeod Street serving Gorgie, Causewayside, Abbeymount at Abbeyhill, Adelphi Grove in Portobello, Bonnington Road/Great Junction Street in Leith, Henderson Row in Canonmills, Union Street and Murdoch Terrace, Dalry.

The wash houses were constructed along similar lines – a large central hall where the tubs were positioned, a heated chamber with drawers for clothes to be dried, office space and a coal-fired boiler room.

Remarkably given the era, most had a crèche.

The first one at St Gray’s Close didn’t and children were being scalded,So it was decided to create a crèche so women could get on with doing the washing while the children were looked after.

The work was sweat-�inducing, with heavy loads of bedding and clothes being plunged into hot tubs, rubbed with hard soap and then cleaned with a ‘wash dolly’ before being fed through a hand mangle. Soaking items were then hung in the drying area – often emerging within an hour, bone dry.

As washing machines became more compact and efficient, the wash houses fell into disuse and despite a lively political battle between Labour and Tory politicians over their future – and angry demonstrations by loyal users desperate to keep them alive – the last wash house closed in 1982.

Some became warehouses or car showrooms before being demolished. Today only three remain: at Adelphi Place in Portobello, now a community centre, MacLeod Street at Tynecastle which is expected to be earmarked for demolition and at Union Street, the base for Edinburgh Printmakers and where there are markings on the walls referring to the building’s previous use.

There was this feeling that they were part of the bad old others thought of them as being like a community centre and very much a women’s environment, run by women and for women. There seems to have been a great deal of sadness when they closed.

WIP Wednesday! Week 1

Alrighty, majority vote went to Spy x Family, which wasn't that surprising really. So without further ado, here's the start of a Christmas story I may post this year:

The tolling of the bells carried across the sprawling campus, signaling the incoming start to the new term. Their monotonous chime brought little cheer to those who listened, as more ominous grey clouds wrapped themselves around Eden’s tallest spires. Below, students dashed along the slippery footpaths, careful not to fall into the dirty snow drifts lining them, though evidence showed some hadn’t been as fortunate.

Damian shuddered at the sight of a particularly deep ‘snow angel’, wriggling further into his cosy jacket as he edged around it. In his young opinion, snow was made to be admired from a distance, such as on top of mountain peaks or through the study windows. How anyone could admire such beauty when it was infiltrating your nose or seeping its icy chill into your undershirt, he never wanted to find out. But of course, others would find such things entertaining, such as the seniors lurking in the bend up ahead, plucking the weaker willed off the path. Demetrius had warned him about these stupid pranks, and he wasn’t about to become one of their victims today, no siree. Besides, he was a Desmond. Surely, they wouldn’t pick on him.

Right?

His fists curled nervously in his coat pockets. Of all the days Ewen and Emile had gone ahead, why did it have to be today? Maybe he shouldn’t have tried chasing those last bites around his plate.

Taking a deep breath, Damian squared his shoulders and continued his careful walk, making sure to look down his nose to the best of his ability at the sneering seniors as he passed them. Thank God his coat was so long that it hid his quivering knees, otherwise he’d be like poor Glooman over there, looking like Frosty the Snowman’s moodier counterpart. Sparing him a sympathetic nod once he was clear of the seniors, Damian continued his trek to class, shoulders sagging in relief when he was safe in the walkway. He’d send some help George’s way as soon as he found a trustworthy adult. Hopefully Henderson was nearby.

Ignoring the mass of students filtering through the cobblestoned terrace, Damian stomped his feet to get rid of any remaining snow, before hitching his bag further up his back and filling his head with better thoughts. He may have not gone home for winter break, preferring the solitude of the dorm library to read his new comics, but Demetrius had still managed to call him and ask about his wellbeing. The interaction had been awkward but Damian didn’t mind; it was nice to know a blood relative cared. And when Jeeves had dropped by for supper on Christmas Day, he had been sure to show how appreciative he was of the older man’s visit. And now that everyone was back, Damian could boast to them about receiving the latest action figures of Moonshadow the Fearless, who was far more superior than Bondman in his humble opinion.

Though now it meant he had to keep his plushie hidden beneath his pillow again.

Yes, the break had been fine for the young Desmond. He had gotten a lot of study done, eaten a lot of delicious treats created by the Dorm Mothers, and not once had he spared a thought for-

Emily Kuhn is a jazz trumpet player based in Chicago, IL, described by the Chicago Jazz Magazine as having “a charismatic style and a sophistication that belies her youth.” Originally from Charlottesville, VA, Emily has made a name for herself as an active bandleader, sidewoman, composer, and educator since moving to Chicago in 2016. She released two albums via BACE Records, Sky Stories (2020) and Ghosts of Us (2023), to numerous accolades. She has brought her original music to festivals including Hey Nonny's Women's Jazz Festival, the Festival of New Trumpet Music, the MCA's Tuesdays on the Terrace, and the Chicago Park District's Night Out in the Parks series, and her work has been recognized by the Luminarts Cultural Foundation, Chicago DCASE, and the Chicago Reader. Emily has a BM and BA in Jazz Trumpet Performance and Environmental Studies from Oberlin. She studied with renowned trumpet players Eddie Henderson, Sean Jones, John D’earth, and John Henes.

The Emily Kuhn Quintet will be celebrating the release of their recent album, "Ghosts of Us," via BACE Records. Described as "the kind of lyrical, spacious jazz that draws you deep within its cocoon-like atmosphere" (Matt Collar, All Music), the album draws inspiration from the Covid-19 pandemic, meditating on themes of stillness, connection, grief, and hope. The group relies on their strong foundation of musical trust to deftly navigate influences from jazz, rock, chamber music, and Americana.

As recognition to Manty Ellis for his contributions to Milwaukee’s jazz history as a musician, educator and “chief encourager” of the city’s jazz community, the Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts is naming an ongoing series of high-quality jazz performances after Manty. It is fitting tribute from this venue specifically because of the hundreds of occasions Manty Ellis performed on our stage, our focus on jazz as an art form with our listening room format, and the encouragement Manty often shared with our staff which helped keep us going through some challenging times.

To present this music in a venue worthy of its namesake, we are embarking on an effort to improve our stage and venue environment. This follows a successful pre-pandemic effort to install a world-class sound system fitting for a venue that presents diverse musical genres as artforms in themselves surrounded by visual art exhibitions.

The Owl House

The Owl House is the most recent western cartoon that I have discovered, and in my opinion has the best LGBTQ representation of what I have seen so far. It was quoted by GLADD as “a show that broke new ground with a bisexual lead on Disney Channel, which features Luz, her girlfriend, Amity, and several other LGBTQ characters in the ensemble” (GLADD, 2023).

Luz is Disney’s first LGBTQ+ lead character (Henderson, 2020). The romance between Luz and Amity was hinted at from the first season and quickly developed into outspoken mutual crushes. This was confirmed when it was revealed that Amity had intended to ask Luz to their school dance. Although she never was able to ask, they still ended up going and dancing together. The relationship between the characters was also made more prominent by the show’s creator Dana Terrace, and her public confirmations of the romance. It had almost felt as though the show’s creator was a part of the fandom itself. Dana Terrace confirmed that Amity is intended to be a lesbian and Luz is bisexual. There was also representation of another main character showing to openly have two dads. The creator has also made confirmations of another character being aromantic and asexual.

The second season of The Owl House introduces the character Raine, who was Disney’s first transgender and non-binary character. This means that Raine experiences a gender identity that is neither exclusive to masculine or feminine, or is in between or beyond (Scripted Sexualities, Week 4). Raine is always referenced to with they/them pronouns in the show, and is also voiced by a transgender and non-binary actor. It has also shown that Raine was in a relationship with another main character, which helps to promote healthy romantic relationships including non-binary people.

The Owl House won a Peabody Award for “giving queer kids a welcome template to explore their own budding creative energies” (Rude, 2021). The Owl House has been credited as being “So far ahead of the rest of Disney in queer representation” (Weekes, 2021). This being because the LGBTQ+ identities in the show, such as Luz being bisexual or Raine being non-binary, are not the main focus of their stories. Rather, it is normalized and not spoken about in a context that would imply that it stands out in anyway, compared to how it could be in the real world. The LGBTQ+ identities are not being treated as something meant to stand out, but rather be a simple part of the characters’ personal stories.

The video included below is an additional analysis of why The Owl House has good LGBTQ+ representation. It also includes parts of an interview that the video’s creator had with Dana Terrace. This is included simply for more information on the topic and additional perspectives on the show’s impact.

Phil Foden set to play new position for Man City next season According to journalist Dean Jones on The Football Terrace, there are suggestions that Phil Foden might play in his preferred midfield position in the upcoming 2023/2024 season. While discussing Manchester City's potential transfers during the summer, an interesting revelation came up regarding Pep Guardiola's plan to utilize Foden in midfield. Dean Jones says Phil Foden could play in midfield next season Jordan Henderson has praised Phil Foden as an "incredible player," and an intriguing aspect of Foden's career progression is that he has mostly played out of his preferred position. Whether deployed on the flanks or as a false nine throughout the 2021/2022 season, the young player has yet to be given a consistent opportunity in central midfield. This has been partly due to the presence of midfield greats such as David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, and Bernardo Silva over the years. However, Dean Jones has disclosed that there are indications of Phil Foden potentially filling Ilkay Gundogan's role as an advanced left-sided midfielder in the upcoming season. This could present a new opportunity for Foden to showcase his skills in his desired position. “Phil Foden is likely to have a position change. We’ve already seen him dropping deeper at times. Phil Foden was always expected to be a player that ended up further back and not in that front three line. I think we’ll see that a lot more next season.” Despite Phil Foden's impressive performances for Manchester City, there is a limit to his effectiveness when played as a winger, as his natural position has always been in midfield. However, the glimpses we have seen of him playing in the middle of the park have been truly outstanding. Foden's smooth dribbling, exceptional vision for passing, top-notch technical skills, and goal-scoring threat make him an ideal candidate to replace Ilkay Gundogan in midfield. If Foden is given the opportunity to play in his preferred position, one can only imagine the remarkable levels of performance we could witness from him. His immense talent suggests that he has the potential to reach even greater heights when deployed in the role that brings him the most joy. IL BARBECUE DI HOMER - Entrando nell’edificio dai colori sgargianti, che nella fiction si trova a Springfield, si viene catapultati nella popolare sitcom: ci sono gli stessi elettrodomestici usati da Marge, il pianoforte a muro color turchese, il giardino con il barbecue di Homer, la stanza di Burt e di Lisa e il microonde color pesca.

LA NUOVA «MARGE» - L’idea della replica è stata della Fox Interactive e della Pepsi-Cola, che dopo averla data in costruzione alla Kaufman & Broad, l’hanno messa in palio in un concorso nazionale, che è stato vinto dalla signora Barbara Howard, una sessantenne ex-operaia del Kentucky e amante della sitcom. L’attuale proprietaria, assomiglia vagamente a Marge e orgogliosa della sua casa (del valore di 75 mila dollari), apre le porte ai turisti di tutto il mondo.

DAL CARTOON ALLA REALTA' - L’architetto che ha copiato la dimora cult, Manny Gonzalez, ha visto oltre 100 episodi dei «Simpsons» prima di mettere su carta il progetto. Persino la «porta del mistero» che si vede nel cartoon, «in cui non si entra e da cui non si esce», è stata riprodotta nella versione reale. I designers della Kaufman & Broad hanno studiato circa 7.200 nuances, prima di scegliere le 25 più simili alla casa creata dal fumettista statunitense Matt Groening: power orange, generator green e pink flamingo. Da qualche tempo, però, l'abitazione ha già cambiato volto: è stata infatti ridipinta esternamente con colori meno sgargianti affinché non stonasse troppo con quelle dei vicini.

August 15th 1963 saw the last hanging in Scotland - 21-year-old Henry Burnett who was executed at Craiginches Prison in Aberdeen for the murder of seaman Thomas Guyan.

Thomas Guyan had married Margaret May on the 2nd of February 1957 and a year later they moved into a first floor flat at 14 Jackson Terrace, Aberdeen, in a house owned by Margaret’s grandmother, Annie Henderson. Margaret gave birth to a son in September 1958 followed by a second one in February, 1961. However the second son was not fathered by Thomas who, although he knew this, would not divorce her. Thomas was often away for lengthy periods at sea. Burnett met Margaret Guyan, when they were working at John R Stephen Fish Curers in Aberdeen. Margaret Guyan later went to live with him at his home in the city’s Skene Terrace.

Burnett kept her locked in the house and on one of the rare occasions she was allowed out alone, she met her estranged husband Thomas Guyan, and agreed to go back to him.

When she refused to return to Burnett, he stole a shotgun from his brother’s house, went to Guyan’s flat at 14 Jackson Terrace in Aberdeen and knocked on the door. When Guyan opened it Burnett shot him in the face at close range. He then dragged Margaret out of the flat at gunpoint and hijacked a car at a petrol station but was captured at Ellon near Peterhead within the hour as two PC’s.had followed the vehicle. He offered no resistance to the officers. During the journey he had proposed marriage to Margaret and she had accepted!

During the trial, the solicitor-general spoke of the ‘sordid background of a sailor’s wife being unfaithful to her husband when he was at sea.’ Burnett entered a plea of insanity but the jury took just 25 minutes to bring back a guilty verdict. A few days before the execution Burnett wrote to Margaret saying: “Well, my darling, you will be wondering why I did not kill you up in Skene Terrace. “Well, it was because I loved you. I could easily have done it if I had wanted to but what they were saying in court was a heap of rubbish about me being insane even at the time. I knew exactly what I was doing.”

Margaret was allowed to spend half an hour with Burnett on the day before the hanging. She would stand by Burnett till the end and later claimed: “My heart is with Harry (as she called him). People can talk but I still love Harry.”

Harry Allen was the hangman, assisted by Samuel Plant. Allen hanged the notorious serial killer Peter Manuel in 1958 at Barlinnie.

A crowd of some 200 people had gathered outside the prison. HMP Aberdeen as Craiginches is now known, closed in January 2014 and Burnett’s body has now been re-interred elsewhere
