you didn’t know if you’d ever get used to the uniform. the blue and white sailor outfit made you feel like you were seven years old and being forced to be a part of a nautical family photoshoot. 

“you’re new, right?”

you stopped adjusting your hat— the final part of the uniform that only made you feel even more ridiculous— and looked at the guy that had just walked into the break room.  

“hi, yeah,” you said with a small smile. “you’re steve?”

when he nodded and said a quick “yeah,” you nodded back and then told him your name. 

you had expected to work your first real shift with robin. she had been the one training you for the past few days and although she had mentioned that there was another person that worked here, you never saw him so you started wondering if you ever would. 

steve simply looked at you for a bit, which reminded you of what you were wearing and you quickly felt ridiculous all over again. your hands went back up to your hat, which had a way too enthusiastic looking “ahoy” written across it, and started adjusting it. “will this uniform ever eventually not feel stupid to wear?”

steve was quick to shake his head. “no, but i’ve ditched the hat and it makes it feel a little less stupid.”

you immediately took yours off your head and left it on the table. “say no more.” 

it was slow in the morning, which made sense because who really wanted to have ice cream for breakfast? therefore, to help pass the time you suggested that you two play rock, paper, scissors. and when you both got bored of that, steve grabbed a napkin and a pen from behind the counter and the two of you started playing tic-tac-toe, and then moved onto hangman. the childish games you two played were just that, childish and a bit mindless, but they helped make the first handful of hours of the shift go by fast. 

it was when noon rolled around that things finally started to pick up and it almost became too much— the line full of overzealous kids that already seemed as if they had too much ice cream and the handful of people that you recognized from school; and of course, they were the people that you really didn’t want to see. 

you quickly found yourself starting to long for the quiet mundanity that the morning part of the shift brought. 

“you wanna take your break?” steve asked. you had just finished dealing with a middle aged man who sampled pretty much every flavor of ice cream you had and then proceeded to buy nothing. perhaps the most annoying ten minutes of your life.

“yes. please. thank you. you’re the best,” your words came out rushed as you quickly started making your way toward the small break room. 

it was nice to have somewhat of a breather for a bit. you hummed along to a random song that was playing on repeat in your head as you ate the sandwich that you brought from home because you refused to spend money in the food court— money you didn’t have, hence why you got a job in the first place. 

“you’re lucky,” steve said when you came back thirty minutes later, once again standing behind the counter with him. “you just missed the horde of moms that just finished their aerobics class and wanted to “treat themselves.””

you were grateful that you missed that rush. 

“if you want, you can go on your break now. i’ll handle the next swarm of kids or moms that show up,” you told him and he nodded at that before heading to the break room.

things actually didn’t become too insane when steve left. 

a group of kids walked up, but before you could ask them what they would like to get, one that had a “camp know where” hat on said, “hi, we’re friends of steve’s. is he here?”

it slightly confused you that steve would be friends with a group of kids who didn’t look like they were even in high school yet. but ultimately, you didn’t question it and instead shook your head at the kid’s question. “he’s on break right now, but he should be out in a few minutes.” 

“how many girls has he flirted with today?” the red-headed girl asked you. 

a confused look crossed your face. “um, none… is that something that usually happens?” 

she laughed a bit at your question. “uh, literally always.”

“oh, shit, he must like you,” the boy, who had been previously holding hands with the red-headed girl, told you. 

it was way too hard to hold back your laugh at that. “i just met him today.” 

the boy with the camp hat was the one to speak. “oh, trust us, that’s more than enough time for steve.”

before you could say anything in response to that, steve emerged from the break room. he talked to the kids for a bit before letting them go through the back so that they could sneak into a movie. 

“what embarrassing things about me did they say to you?” he asked when he returned next to you. 

you held back your laugh as you answered him. “according to them, you like me.” 

his eyes widened a bit and the redness that rose to his cheeks was almost immediate; just for a moment you thought that maybe there was actually some truth behind the kids’ words. 

he then let out a loud sigh. “i’m never letting them come here again.”  

the next few hours actually breezed by, with random rushes here and there but nothing too overwhelming, and before you knew it your first official day at scoops ahoy was done. 

you and steve cleaned up everything— wiping down tables, refilling napkin dispensers, etc.— and then started heading to the parking lot. somehow the emptiness of the mall felt weirdly calming.

“where are you parked?” you asked when the two of you exited the mall, immediately getting hit by the cool summer air.

steve gestured to the left side of the parking lot. “over there.”

“i’m this way,” you said, pointing in the opposite direction.

“oh, okay,” he said with a small nod. he then leaned in for what you thought would be a hug, but then he seemed to change his mind last second and instead held out his hand for you to shake, which you did after a brief second of hesitation and confusion. the entire chain of events felt insanely awkward, but you also couldn’t help but find it all a little funny. 

“so, um, i’ll… see you later,” steve said, his voice was softer and it sounded a little unsure. 

you smiled at him and his sudden nervousness right then. “yeah, see you later, steve.”

I will say that these gifts seem very fitting for everyone, but between the few questions marks next to some of the gifts, along with Eddie's doubts about Julie's and Frank's gift in the vid:

Sounds like Eddie HIMSELF is unsure if these gifts will work. It has the same vibes as trying to shop for someone that you sort of know the interests of, but not much else

Which sort of amplifies that he isn't the closest to any of the neighbors (seemingly he only gets to interact with them when they need something from him), so this might play more into the theme of Eddie being alienated from the rest of the neighborhood

Now I am not about to begin to try to count how many games he played through that you can see on the screen (you can't make me!)

BUT, given the scoreboard:

But listen - I'll end this post with something that has been scratching at me - Tic Tac Toe as a potential symbol in the story

Now I don't know HOW significant Tic Tac Toe is to WH, but I think it is significant.

Does anyone remember this post back in October, during the Halloween update? The one where OP had put this one tic tac toe game over the map? (go check it out)

I really do think that's a solid lead towards something big, and it was actually one of the first things that popped in my head when thinking back to this.

But even if it turns out it isn't, Tic Tac Toe has been showing up from time to time via drawings/surroundings, which is already enough to at least consider it moving forward

So here, while it makes sense in context as to why Eddie is playing the game a bunch in the video (waiting around for someone to show up with nothing better to do), and all this can honestly be a stretch, but to have him specifically play THAT game, after its been shown to pop up that often...makes me suspicious for sure...

Bruce only moves his head from leaning from one hand to another, Vance sitting across from him drinking sparkling water of all things. It was late at night, and they weren't tired enough to stop at a hotel or motel or whatever just yet, but enough that they were hungry. So, pit stop to some late night diner it was.

The other boys were distracted with the sugar packets, playing tic tac toe in pairs because they didn't want to start up two games of tic tac toe on the slightly sticky table. It was their fifth game in a row, Robin and Finney in the lead with three wins. Everyone sitting on Bruce's side had sodas, which was the same side Robin and Finney were on, while everyone on Vance's side got not-sodas.

Hence why Bruce is left staring at Vance still drinking from that green glass bottle of sparkling water. He's never seen someone who willingly drank it until now. Bruce didn't even know Vance did until tonight, Vance licking at his canine as he stares back at him.

"Why you keep staring? Eh?" Vance raises an eyebrow, leaning forward just slightly. "You never see spicy water before?"

"It's- Well I have it's just- And you're enjoying that?" Bruce has to ask, mildly exasperated.

Vance shrugs, rocking the bottle along the table in a circle, hand choking its neck. "Need my daily water intake, whatever those shitty health class tries to tell us to do."

"Then get normal water, like Billy?"

"That's boring. You're boring. Leave my water preference alone."

Bruce just gives him a look, and Vance grins back, knocking back the water like it's not water at all.

At least he was drinking water. Small mercies, Bruce guesses. Small mercies.

got any tips for making a fallout oc?

Yeah.

Okay, so; in most franchises I don’t actually like making OCs (as protagonists/interacting with the protagonists) because usually they kinda Go Against The Grain of the original, uh, cast, BUT as a result I got pretty good at figuring out how to make OCs that blend in well enough that to be honest you can’t… really tell they’re OCs?

For Fallout, Bethesda games, and RPGs in general? This goes RIGHT out of the window because the games already MAKE you make an OC in the form of the player-character, so, free pass. You’ve basically got the opportunity to make whoever you want! But, thankfully, the ability to blend in an OC is useful if you wanna make OCs who are background characters who need to blend in with the other background characters, hence me going nuts and making Rott, Trench, Jac, Toothpick, Scar, Anya, Tic, Tac, Toe… you get the gist.

So my first advice is thinking about who this OC is, because if you’re looking for more errant fun in the form of a weird protagonist, you’ve got a lot of leeway. For the purposes of my answer, though, I’m gonna presume you want a more, uh, ‘lore-friendly’ OC.

A good OC should be grounded into the world; Fallout’s a pretty bonkers series, all told, so you can go a little nuts here and still have it work! But generally, a good grounding is by giving them a background that features places, people, family, names. Rott, for instance, was a dog breeder and lived with their cousin until a friend of a friend (of a friend) heard the Pack wanted a zookeeper, and ended up following their morally-meh instincts to take on a job! Even though I haven’t put down any concrete names/figures, this is a pretty believable townie.

“but murphy,” you say, “you didn’t even tell people this!” TRUE FACTS but I don’t have to! A good grounding in the world is mostly for you, because then you can have your character respond to events and conversations with knowledge or thoughts based on their background, which offers them a unique perspective. Rott’s reaction to something will wildly differ from, say, Trench, because Trench was born in a raider-adjacent lifestyle where Rott lived a townie life up until a year or two ago at best.

See, I think a good OC (and this goes for anything) is an OC that feels realistic in the world they reside in. Andy, for instance, feels like a legitimate addition because her origins aren’t unusual for the world—in fact, hers are pretty par for the course (like, just look at Nisha)! You can look at her and say ‘yup, that tracks’ because there isn’t anything about her that sticks out in such a way to feel like it doesn’t sit well with the canonical Fallout worldbuilding.

That said, of course, you can get weird; as mentioned, Fallout is a pretty wild world. Having someone with a weird origin (say, abducted by aliens) would work well enough if you managed to embed it well enough within the Fallout details, i.e. Mothership Zeta. The game sets a precedent for a lot of out-of-this-world ideas—you just need to make sure you let enough of the game seep into your personal ideas to essentially give it that Fallout flavour.

The way I enjoy writing OCs to help embed them into a world is to actually write them in third-person from another character’s perspective (see: The Work of Wolves). I find that when you choose to write about an OC from that OCs perspective, it’s easy to, um, tilt everything towards them, if that makes any sense? Like, they become the centre of the universe because they are the centre of the universe, in their eyes! As such, an OC can feel like they stick out against everything else because everything feels like it revolves around them simply by having the story be in their perspective. So, having a canonical character (or, shit, another OC who’s like a barkeep or something small) be the POV of a story helps to make that OC feel like one person inside a bigger cast! They aren’t the centre of the world now; that POV character also has other characters and people they need to talk to and interact with, and so your OC will feel as though they live inside the world more organically.

“but murphy,” you say again, “nisha won’t shut the fuck up about andy!”

Also true facts. The reason for this is that Nisha is observant and obsessive over people she deems as a threat—which is pretty much par for her character, and I can get away with it!

So, uh, that’s mostly my recommendations/my creation method. Basically, it’s all about the canonical content and the details therein—the more you can use canon to obscure the edges of an OC, they’ll feel less like an interloper and more like any canonical Fallout character! Think of it like trying to add an extra piece to a puzzle, making sure the edges all align; you can still go weird and wonderful, but you wanna make sure that they slot in against the other characters without taking up too much space! Try writing a short story in which you introduce them in the background of a scene, slowly building up their presence; this is a really good way to integrate them in such a way the reader won’t notice them until they’re a much bigger presence.

This kinda turned into a general how to make a background OC tutorial, but honestly I use the same tricks every time no matter the franchise or story, so, yeah! Hope that helps!

so! baseball tic tac toe. you need a liiiittle bit of baseball information background for this. essentially in baseball there are different things you can do when you're up to bat. you can get out (a number of ways), you can get a walk, or you can get a hit. what is a hit, you ask? it's not just any time the bat connects with the ball. a hit, in baseball, is when the batter hits the ball and does not get out/does get on base. so if you hit the ball but then you're out at first, it's not a hit, it's an out. there are a bunch of nuances to what counts as a "hit" and i don't know all of the very specific rules, but that's the gist of it.

so. how does this relate to baseball tic tac toe? simple!!! in baseball tic tac toe, you make a tic tac toe grid, you know the one, and in each square you put the name of a player on the lineup. at any given moment in a baseball game there will be nine people on the lineup so it works out pretty nicely. and then whenever someone gets a hit, you get to cross them off in your tic tac toe board. first person to get tic tac toe wins. ive drawn up an example for you with names pulled sort of at random from the nats roster. sadly i am unfamiliar with most of the new nationals roster since the stupid trade deadline fucking gutted us but anyway not important. so imagine this is my tic-tac-toe board:

you would normally want your strongest hitter in the middle, hence why soto is there. again, not important. the point is, say soto gets up to bat and hits a single, that's a hit, so i get to cross him off. so on and so forth until i win.

I was lured into buying toys

Sooo..to start off, I am already twenty four years old running to twenty five and I was lured into buying toys, toys that Mcdonald's has recently released---the ADVENTURE TIME collectibles! Yippee yaaayy! I mean how couldn't I?

Based on the above discussion, the Association for the development of artificial intelligence has two objectives – to develop and advance the technology of artificial intelligence and to promote and educate about the responsible usage of artificial intelligence.

The Tic Tac Toe activity requires each step to be played by a different team member which means that if one member makes the wrong move, the entire team loses. 4.   Jumbo Volleyball

This is fun throughout! The fun team building task is to steer a jumbo-sized ball across the net to the opponent team. Just like the game of volleyball, there are two teams here. 5.   The Spider Web

An outdoor activity, this game is a team activity but needs to be done by every team member, one by one. The entire team gets penalized because of the wrong step taken by one member, hence not only extra precaution and care needs to be taken to perform the task; participants need to take onus and ownership of their doings. As part of the activity, team members need to cross a complicated structure, resembling a spider’s web, made with a rope. There are strict rules – members cannot touch the rope and cannot repeat a path. 6.   The Tetris Tower

An innovative activity that encourages participants to use their presence of mind as well as their ingenuity, the Tetris Tower needs to be constructed by each team using 6 wooden blocks. The basic rule of the game is that participants are not allowed to touch the blocks. They need to move, pick up and place the blocks using a wooden disc that is handed over to them by the facilitator. Other than working collaboratively and planning well, the activity also trains employees on aspects of how to manage resources well and to focus in the right way to carry out a given work. No doubt, even the communication must be proper so that the directions being given by team members to the person holding the disc also must be concise, clear and precise with no scope of ambiguity or confusion.

7.   Water Volleyball

A through and through outdoor sporting activity, this one requires physical strength along with mental attentiveness. The group is divided into two teams and each team is handed over a satin cloth or pieces of cloth that they need to use to move and catch the water balloons. The game is played in the volleyball style – the difference being that instead of the ball, there are water balloons here and participants need to use the given satin cloth to make the ball move to the other side of the net instead of their hands.
