Fanfiction and Tiktok videos

Shipping means matchmaking, bringing people romantically together. Characters are admired and at the same time there are speculations or hopes that they could be together.

Shipping can concern fictional character from movies, for example, but also real people. One of the most known cases is the friendship between One Direction singers Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson, which was also speculated to be a romantic relationship. Shippers thought that the band members were secretly together and tried to find evidence for their theory. The duo was nicknamed Larry.

Tomlinson has later told that shipping damaged the friendship between him and Styles.

At the moment, Käärijä and Bojan have more than enough shippers. Or Böörijä - as the pair has been nicknamed.

Käärijä and Bojan’s new Tiktok videos are filled with comments like “really giving the people what they want” and “this level of fanservice is crazy.” Tiktok is also full of video edits made by fans where Käärijä and Bojan spend time together.

Besides Tiktok, the fictional relationship between Käärijä and Bojan has also been written about on the more traditional sites concentrated on fanfiction. For example, there are 190 stories about Käärijä and Bojan published on the fanfiction site Archive of Our Own. People have also drawn fan art or their own pictures of Käärijä and Bojan.

Shipping increases the popularity of artists

Käärijä and Bojan first met each other during the Eurovision preparty in Madrid. During Eurovision, they appeared in each other’s social media in several updates, they held an Instagram live together, and Käärijä playfully referenced to Bojan as his boyfriend in one video.

During one interview Bojan was asked if he was getting a baby seal with Käärijä. Fans were excited about the idea, and soon, a zoo located in Wien, Tiergarten Schönbrunn, offered the duo a chance to support the zoo’s sea lions for a year.

Bojan’s band Joker Out’s manager Gregor Zalokar also shared the news in his Instagram story. During Eurovision week, Zalokar also published a lot of other content about Bojan and Käärijä, which is why the friendship between the two has been suspected to be a publicity stunt.

Stunt or not, the friendship between Bojan and Käärijä is probably one of the reasons why the band Joker Out has the most listeners in Helsinki, according to Spotify statistics. Even if the friendship is sincere, it boosts the popularity of both artists. For example, the artists can get more visibility with Tiktok videos made by fans.

So it is no wonder that they also gladly give shippers something to speculate about, for example watching the romantic movie Twilight together.

Tuesday morning, when Bojan left Finland, he wrote in his Instagram story, “Thank you Jere, thank you Helsinki. I had a blast, see you soon.” Joker Out’s concert dates will be published on Wednesday, and fans think that Käärijä will in turn visit a gig of Bojan’s band.

So, the friendship of Käärijä and Bojan keeps on giving - soon, the shippers will get new material for Tiktok videos and fanfiction.

it had been a week since minji went out with y/n. a week of confusion and listening to sad girl music.

on the other hand, hanni knew something was up between her leader and her crush, who wouldn’t notice the way minji walked back to her room holding the flowers closely while y/n simply hugged her before leaving. watching the entire interaction has been weird for the group, even the mama practice was awkward. hanni watched the way minji tries her best to keep the group intact, giving everyone snacks and drinks to keep energized.

now, hanni is in a dilemma, putting her shoes on and rushing a bit to not keep y/n waiting. she wants to keep things clear, admitting her feelings could be the first step to it, just admitting it and to be acknowledged.

“where are you going?” hanni turned around to see minji standing by the end of the hallway, hands in the pockets of her hoodie. standing up, putting her hands in the pocket of her jeans where she had placed her mask.

“out.”

“alone? at 9 in the evening?” hanni was about to speak up when they both heard soft knocking by their door. she opened the door as minji watched intently, there stood y/n.

“hi, ready?” she nodded, waving at minji goodbye, closing the door behind her as minji waved back.

“can we go to han river?” y/n nodded as they both went to her car. nothing but silence and hanni holding onto her arm.

their minds are buzzing, y/n thinking on what hanni is about to tell her, while hanni is thinking how to confess. minji’s confession has been such a big rollercoaster of emotions that y/n think she should just confess to hanni and if she gets rejected then maybe she could focus on minji. doing that is like playing with her feelings, and she doesn’t want that. she’s not chaewon, she genuinely likes me, i can’t do that.

“do you want to get ice cream before we go on a walk around han river?” y/n was the first to break the silence in the car, hanni was playing random songs some were a bit hinting towards her feelings.

hanni only nodded singing to the words of falling by harry styles, feeling it and slowly she could hear y/n singing as well. it was low, sort of a mumble but it says a lot as if the lyrics would perfectly send a message to hanni.

“i’m falling again, i’m falling again, i’m falling.” maybe it was a message to hanni, as y/n look at her as soon as she parked the car.

“come on, i feel like we’ll need more than ice cream.” and as spontaneous as it is, hanni managed to make y/n smile in a while.

ice cream was long forgotten as they picked up random snacks, drinks, and sat by on the concrete floor under the cold night. it was freezing after all, they needed something warm while they watch the stars and talk about life as it is.

“you really chose the among us chocolate milk?” y/n had a big smile plastered on her face as she opened her drink. it was cute and a meme.

“you don’t hear me complaining about you picking up those onion rings that has lil to no taste.”

“how dare you??? i quite enjoy these snacks.”

the night was young, hanni didn’t want to rush into things and y/n was having a fun and peaceful time. complaining about each other’s choices, laughing at their faces, looking at the starry night trying to depict an image as if it were clouds. this was an experience y/n would never forget, a core memory.

“so, what do you want to talk about?” hanni almost choked from the question.

right, i was gonna confess.

“uh, well, did something happen between you and minji?” y/n choked on her water, coughing a bit as hanni handed her a napkin to clean the mess on her face.

“sorry, took me by surprise.” y/n continued cleaning up her mess, avoiding hanni’s gaze. “i’m not sure if i could tell you.”

“oh… to be honest with you, y/n.” hanni took a deep breath, thinking it through but she can’t keep this secret anymore. she can’t keep lying to herself that she doesn’t like the girl she’s with right now.

“that’s not what i wanted to talk about.” that took y/n by surprised, if it weren’t about her and minji then-

“what is it?”

“i like you.” y/n was quiet, letting hanni speak her mind, let everything out.

“i’ve liked you for a while now, i thought it was just admiration because you’re an idol who’s the same age as me and achieved a lot. then we became friends and slowly those feelings turned into-“

“butterflies in your stomach? all thoughts from day and night consisting of one person only? and wanting to spend all of your time with them?”

“yes.”

y/n finally looked at hanni who was now avoiding her gaze. slowly holding her hand out to let her know that it was alright, that it doesn’t change anything.

“i-“

“i just wanted to let you know, i’m not asking for an answer or anything.”

“peace of mind?”

hanni nodded, finally holding y/n’s hand. she could only smile, y/n has dealt with various confessions but hanni, just like minji, is precious to her.

“i like you too but… i also like someone else.”

“oh… did minji confess to you?”

that nod was all the confirmation hanni needed, but raised a lot more questions.

“i didn’t reject her or anything. i just don’t want to lead any of you on.” 

hanni nodded, pulling y/n closer to her and leaning her head on y/n’s shoulder. hands intertwined as they watched the river in silence.

“i’ll wait until you’re ready. no turning back now cause i’ve fallen for you.” y/n kissed the back of hanni’s hand, placing it on top of her lap and leaning her head on top of hanni’s.

the hard part of it all, is that i’m falling.

9 books that are my favourites

tagged by @arenee1999 a few days ago, thank you <3 as i was writing this list in my head last night, i thought - this could be read as a list of my favourite fandoms and television/film adaptations, but hey ho. i did a degree in english lit or something.

harry potter and the prisoner of azkaban by JKR - no book has been so important to my life and i also just think it's a really fun mystery and i still like it, so - it's here, it's staying.

carry on by rainbow rowell - but of course. this one was quite important too.

pride and prejudice by jane austen - i don't think this has ever made a fav book list before, i think because i thought it was too basic, but damnit - this book is great, it influences the way i write enemies to lovers, i love the 1995 adaptation and all of austen's novels are bangers except mansfield park, which i keep trying to like but it sucks.

the once and future king by TH white - all my life i loved the movie 'camelot' and it's depiction of arthur. i only learned as an adult that it was TH white's gentle, earnest, thwarted arthur that they'd used <3 he's perfect. 'ill-made knight' is the best of the series, IMO

lieutenant hornblower by cs forester - i haven't read the books in ages, so maybe it's time for a re-read. the ioan grufford adaptation is great, i wish they'd do the later/earlier books too! BUT this early (in hornblower's life) book is my fav - the only one told from bush's POV as he struggles with how he loves hornblower but worries the guy wants to do a mutiny (which he totally does)

the folk of the air by holly black - a new entrant even though i've loved it for years, but i've decided i don't just think it's really good, it's so good that it's one of my favs. maybe the best of the trilogy is the middle book, 'wicked king' where jude is in power with limited support and they fall in love (or do they???). how the king of elfham learned to hate stories is also brilliant.

'the emperor mage' by tamora pierce. i've been waiting my whole life for the numair book and it was terrible, but her first three trilogies are my absolute crack, and this is the best book of those series IMO. the bit where numair tries to hit the emperor for implying he loves his student daine (which he does) while she's listening but disguised as a bird - and then he fakes his own death, and daine goes crazy... that bit has stayed with me for decades, i love it so much.

'night watch' by terry pratchett. i still feel late to properly loving pterry, but i've always liked this one and now i love it - vimes is my guy, i love the time travel, that he trains himself, that he resists both passively and when required actively. v good. my next fav is probably ... 'monstrous regiment', which i think is a bit more of a weird choice (unlike this one which is mega popular and also about all the things i like), but it just does everything right! oh, 'and 'going postal'.

'the princess bride' by s morgenstern william goldman. i haven't read this for ages either so maybe it shouldn't make the list, but i expect it's still pretty great. a mindfuck for a young child who has only seen the film and thinks all of the frame narrative must therefore be real... also, the film is like one of the best films ever and i have seen that super recently. if you haven't seen the home movie, do yourself a favour and watch it because it's a great way to enjoy the movie a-new.

Loki (2004) aka "Blood Brothers" by Robert Rodi & Esad Ribic

It's my favorite Marvel!Loki comic of all time. It altered my brain chemistry. You can read it for free on the links in my pinned post.

Runemarks duology-Joanne Harris

Just keep to the first two books. You'll hate the rest. Let's just say it dealt horribly with Eating Disorders and Harris should have done research on heavy topics before writing about them. Her Loki in the first two books is very enjoyable and he rules over goblins for a while, among other things. I also thought the way rune birthmarks worked in here was fun.

Norse Mythology-Neil Gaiman

It's an entertaining overview of the myths. If you're unfamiliar with them it's a good place to start.

Adult:

Black Wolf: The Binding of Loki-Una Verdandi

I don't recommend if you want a soft!Loki or one that remains a decent person. Loki is interesting and feels like a force of nature. But let's just say he's like the Joker with all that implies. But I thought it was a worthwhile read (very long). It has probably the best Sigyn depiction I've encountered. She feels like a real person! I go more in detail here. I'd pay attention to the things I warn about in case they're deal-breakers or triggers. My review is not spoiler free but contains warnings.

American Gods-Neil Gaiman

Has very interesting premise and a multiple pantheons existing at the same time. It's fun how the deities adapt to the USA and modern times.

The Goddess of Nothing at All-Cat Rector

This book is basically a Norse myth whump fic. I would avoid if that's not your thing because I can see how someone else might hate it. I know I like it because making fictional characters suffer is my guilty pleasure. You won't be laughing at the mythology-based Loki memes. I don't think it's perfect. For example, I dislike that they have to make Loki's every action "justified", such as cutting Sif's hair because Sif called him fantasy racism slurs. Let him be a bit of an asshole just because. The disproportionate punishment makes it difficult not to sympathize with Loki either way. I don't know how I feel about her Sygin. It's the 2nd best Sygin I've seen yet in books. She has a personality, is likeable, and is not a doormat, but something about her and this Loki feels sanitized to me. Like the author was checking boxes for Sygin and Loki. I don't know how to explain it.

Father of Monsters-A. B. Frost

Short read. Loki is a loveable little shit that gets the Aesir into trouble and takes one for the team to get them out of it. I really liked this characterization and it had cute illustrations of Loki, Angrboda, and Jormungandr.

The Nine Worlds Rising Series-Lyra Wolf

They're not perfect. I think her Loki is very funny and likable but too sanitized. And Sigyn has no flaws other than caring too much for her no-good brother while the other goddesses are evil witches. But the author has a very comedic writing voice that is highly enjoyable and keeps the stakes high so that you want to keep on reading. I also like how one of the books starts with a very vengeful Loki and draws comparisons to Lucifer. Thought that was cool. Also, some reactions to some reveals didn't land the impact as well as they should. They do tease the Odin/Loki abusive relationship, but not with the toxicity I wanted, and Odin goes on a redemption path a bit too soon for my liking (while making all the goddesses evil witches...). There's also a lot of anachronistic language in here, such as Loki mentioning a Chihuahua.

Books I haven't read but I know of their existence:

Loki-Melvin Burgess (I saw a Sigyn stan complain about it, but I am not sure how seriously to take her complaints because she said shipping myth!Loki with say Balder or Thor or Odin was "incestuous" because Loki is Odin's "blood brother" despite Loki being unrelated to everyone but Narfi and Nari on Asgard). My standards for Loki don't require that Loki be a paragon of morality, unlike hers. UPDATE: A mutual told me it's horribly transphobic and has rape apologia.

Harbinger of the End-Nicki Chapelway (I've seen praise from Logyn shippers for this one)

Loki: Nine Naughty Tales of the Trickster by Mike Vasich

I saw an excerpt with a rather humorous joke, but the one other Mike Vasich Loki book I read bored the hell out of me. So I haven't given it a chance for that reason.

The Blackwell Pages by Kelley Armstrong and Melissa Marr

It's a children's book series where the descendants of Thor and Loki are the protagonists.

Honestly, i love how funny he is?? like he is definitely overly memed on, and it's gotten old, but a lot of those moments just on their own are so funny to me SJKDHVS like the whole "how many breads have you eaten" line is so ????? why did u say that king..... and honestly i dont think he gets enough credit for the whole Muda shtick like hes the first (i think?) character to start the whole catchphrase thing back in part 1, pre stands, and it's again. not complaining, but what went through ur mind in making that decision, bud. plus the weird little homunculi he just made for funsies in part 1?? a real comedian 10/10

His fashion!! i genuinely LOVE his fits and all the little details in them so much, including the ones he wears in one off illustrations. the leathery, feathery, one is his best looks EVER and i honestly kinda wish it wouldve been in part 3. wouldve been very Lestat. ALSO this includes the Moorish shoes!!! i think they tie in his themes and design SO WELL and im tired of people clowning on them

His impact on the story! Dio Brando really, truly is That Guy™️ i love that he continuously haunts the narrative (at least in parts 1-6) and even with Diego, who is a different character, but still undeniably Dio. just as a reader/watcher getting through the ENTIRE old universe and finally feeling like dio and his mess is done forever just for Diego to show up in part 7 is just really funny to me, esp with how similar Diego is to Dio as opposed to Johnny and Jonathan or really a lot of the other counterparts. You can't get rid of him.

I thank Araki every day for that character sheet he released last year bc Dio intending to have a soft voice is SO GOOD to me. like i love both anime performances a ton and they're iconic and fit the whole over the top theme of it all, but big, scary, villains with smooth, level, soft voices is my kryptonite 😩 ive thought of it before, but if i had to pick like. an actual more "realistic" voice claim for him it would be Harry Lloyd👀 loved him in game of thrones, and his character voice wise in that def has RANGE like ii think dio would have, but he also does audiobooks and they're SO lovely to listen to💖

The way Araki ties him to the Arts, as pretentious as that sounds💀 i think depicting him as someone who appreciates art, literature, and philosophy makes him SO FUN to play with from a fan/creator perspective. i feel like it's a great way to toy around with other bits of symbolism and really expand on him in art and fics.

is it weird to just answer the ask meme questions without actual asks? probably, but i want to yell about fandom shit rn so you can't stop me

A - Ships that you currently like a lot. its obvious that im in a grimm fixation rn, so i have to say nick/monroe as a romantic ship (or nick/monroe/rosalee), and the whole gang as a platonic relationship. For SGA, i'm always a mcshep fan but i honestly enjoy any pairing of AR1. Anyone that has followed me for an extended period of time knows that im a mcdanno (H50) and leverage ot3 truther as well.

B - A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind. hmm, not sure? OH some folks doing the sga kinkmeme have mentioned john/cam and im very intrigued

C - A ship you have never liked and probably never will. Rodney/Jennifer :( I love Jennifer, but the writers consistently changed her characterization and that relationship felt forced and weird (SGA)

She's a complex and interesting character, and its clear that a lot of her decisions come from a place of trauma. After having Diana it really shows that she does want to protect her and keep her safe (grimm)

Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go! im so cranky rn about the lack of depiction of trauma/mental illness/neurodivergence/etc in fandoms where its to be expected. like with Grimm rn, you give Nick PTSD and sensory enhancements but then suddenly forget about them?? that's not how that works! Or why is it always just hinted at that characters are ND? why is it so hard to just be like 'yeah no x has ADHD (or whatever)'? i want to be able to actually have complex/tough/interesting/etc protags that are ALSO neurodiverse. if we're all reading John as having ADHD (SGA) or Parker being autistic (leverage) anyways, why can't these things just be intentionally part of the character

The more I listen to maroon it definitely is Harry to me. I see the resemblance of ATW but it’s so much more of a fondness and a friendship there then it ever was with Jake. Also ALL the parallels of their music can’t be ignored… she references hallways, wine stained shirt, phone calls, how did we loose sight of us “again” .. their on and off relationship. Makes so much sense for it to be him.

i'm saying this in the gentlest and most respectful possible way, and i want to preface with that because tone is hard to read on the internet asdhsljdfklj - it is Red. taylor so clearly signaled what each individual song on the album is about (and she did that for a reason), so i'm a little confused why people aren't taking her at her word and proceeding from there - and i don't believe you mean to dismiss her at ALL, btw! <3 some people are very much doing that, and cherry picking and twisting her words, you're not, and i appreciate that - i want to try and help clarify why the song is very profoundly about the relationship she outlines on red beyond just the color being the biggest signifier, so red it was dark red, or that she cheekily wore the red ring when she announced the title, or as my friend zoë said: it was burning red, and now they're burned.

i feel like something that's happened in the fandom is, because of the emotional heartbreak and the discussion of the age gap etc, there's been a shying away from seeing the relationship as important as it was, and as beautiful as it was to taylor despite the pain of it. the beauty persisted for her through the pain. we've sort of memed the scarf and made jake into a nefarious figure, but if we look at it from taylor's perspective, she had (and has) real empathy for him and very particular memories of what they shared. the fondness and friendship is actually all over red as an album (it's very clear in state of grace, for example). it's all over the ATW short film and the way she directed dylan and sadie's interactions in depicting that. she felt a real intimate connection there, which is why the fallout on repeat was so devastating. they were very much on again/off again, even in 2012 this was obvious (it's in wanegbt, it's in the last time). all too well isn't only about the heartbreak, it's about how beautiful and precious that was to her - it felt like home somehow, maybe this thing was a masterpiece. maroon has extremely close parallels to sad beautiful tragic - a whole thesis could be written on maroon and sbt going hand-in-hand. it's not only the sorrow, it's the joy too. she loved him in a soul deep kind of way, and the thing is, he loved her too, but couldn't get himself together. sobbing with his head in his hands is them going off the track again. she said at tiff (iirc) that she came to realize this was someone who had a lot of demons, and that's why he often reacted the way he did. the darkness and the passion and the closeness and the depth of the love that went wrong in maroon is red to the core.

the wine stained dress in clean was always about jake. harry borrowed the lyric later, like he borrowed the refrigerator light, which is his artistic right and license to also give songs reference points and clarity. the dancing motif is recurrent in different ways, which i talked about here. standing hollow eyed in the hallway is i find myself at your door, just like all those times before. the phone calls are a key theme across the breadth of red - she mentions calling in atw, i almost do, sad beautiful tragic, the moment i knew, wanegbt, babe. sometimes in the middle of the night, i can feel you again; i wake with your memory over me. consider the fact that maroon sounds like the entirety of red condensed into one song the way question...? sounds like the entirety of 1989 condensed into one song, and how different her emotions and recollections are. the love affair that maimed her and that glistened, it was sweet in the beginning, then it was taking down the pictures and the plans they'd made. the pulse in maroon like a bruise.

i also think the legacy lyric is really, really key. he was her first grown-up love and she felt that with her whole being. that leaves a lasting impression. but more than that, the legacy is red itself, as an album. its place in her career, the way it's regarded now, the significance of all too well as exemplary of her songwriting.

i'm not at all trying to be argumentative, i get where the slivers of similarity to some things with harry come from, but the tone is notably distinct. we don't have to "like" jake to recognize what a powerful and lasting effect that romance had on taylor. that love went to the bone. i think the reason why maroon is particularly potent is because the most recent thing she'd worked on was red tv and it brought a lot of those memories/feelings to the surface and she could write from an even more mature perspective. "when the silence came, we were shaking, blind, and hazy," is a summation of that record. and i never saw you coming, and i'll never be the same. in dreams, i meet you in warm conversation; we both wake, in lonely beds, in different cities; and time is taking its sweet time erasing you. loving him was red.

I don’t think my grandmother was even that keen of cats.

A review of Somerset House's 'Cute' exhibition.

The Cute exhibition at Somerset House begins in a small pink room, and hanging on the wall we see what is also the start, but in this case of a global culture; the first cat memes captured by photographer Harry Pointer, dating back to 1872. Next to it, following the feline theme, there is a vast collection of 300 china cats inside a vitrine. It is Andy Holden’s ‘Cat-tharsis’ (2016). Playing on the headphones hanging underneath the glass cube, Andy talks about what this collection that his grandmother left to him after her passing, meant to his grandmother; how these cats gave her a sense of control, how she used them as a catalyst for the love within her. He also talks about what cats mean to our culture, to our history. He speaks on the UK economy, and how charity shops - the place where her grandmother collected a great number of these figures- might represent the avid mass-consumption of the British public caused by capitalism. An incredibly interesting and unexpected piece on culture and grief, which a quote from, names the title of this text.

If there is a country knows how to do cute, it is Japan. With a whole room dedicated to Japanese vintage illustrations and art, we can see how these drawings were used as a form of escapism from the after-war times during the 90s, and how Japan influenced the western world with the introduction of the kawaii. Jun’ichi Nakahara’s beautiful book cover illustrations (1913-1983) of women represent a beginning for manga and anime style. Weirdly enough, upon entering the room they called my attention as they resembled ‘Girl with a Kitten’ by Lucien Freud, which coincidentally does match the theme of this particular exhibition.

The Hello Kitty room is probably one of the most talked about parts of the exhibition. With two walls full of Hello Kitty branded objects ranging from notebooks, to rice cookers, to coin purses... A shrine to miss Kitty, and an ode to this epitome of capitalism for having influenced a whole generation, not only of children, but of adults as well. It is interesting to see for yourself how the symbol and brand spread their wings through essentially every demographic, and benefited from the over-consumption boom of the 90s and early 2000s. Sadly, apart from this display of products, the room has the icky feeling of an instagram-like photobooth space without adding any artistic value to the exhibition. But, did you know Hello White (her actual name, I’ve learned) " [...] lives in a London suburb, and dreams of becoming a pianist and poet? [That] her birthday is on the 11th of November, her height is measured as five apples, and she weighs the same as three?" Maybe we’re all just like Hello Kitty, but just measured with a lot more apples.

The exhibition follows with great artworks, like Mike Kelley’s iconic ‘Aah… Youth!’ (1990), a critique of “childhood fetishisation”, and Wang Ping’s ‘An Emo Nose’ (2015), a bright and colourful animation depicting- in a surprisingly charming and accurate way- adult loneliness. The middle of the room is overflowing with objects, which the previous section helped contextualise: A Yung Lean poster, a SADBOYS bucket hat, a bright pink ski mask, a bag of smiley face stamped drugs, a Sylvanian Families toy set, a tamagotchi, a duolingo meme, a Charli XCX vinyl, an Animal Crossing gameplay... I found that, seeing what to me are such quotidian objects in an exhibition space made me laugh. They do however, encapsulate my childhood and teenage years, and quite frankly, are a big explanation of who I am. As someone that grew up with unrestrained access to the internet since the age of 11, I can say that these objects essentially raised me. It made me feel tribal, like I was in a global inside joke. These objects also showcase how cuteness can be used as an advantage politically and how effective it is for conveying a message, making the reality of an ugly theme (oppression, systematic injustice, etc) look easier to digest and divulge.

The last section I visited was an interactive space. To tell you the truth, I did not enjoy these rooms as much as I would've liked, and the reason why has nothing to do with the exhibition itself. The room was full of animalistic and screaming under-12 year old kids, and families with prams blocking stairways and hallways, and parents using the space as a playpen for their kids to run around. I stopped at the arcade, where you could play games that followed the theme of the exhibition. As I was giggling away playing the “linear visual novel about a Froggy chilling a pot”, children began running around impatiently, in the hopes that someone would free up one of the arcade looking screens. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t have the patience.

With a combination of humour, social commentary and critique, the exhibition encapsulates the story of a culture and phenomenon we are still living through. It showcases how we’ve created a subculture for the use of evading the terrifying thought of the internet times and the digitalisation taking over our worlds. It displays a wide arrange of topics all within the main theme, that is kept consistent through out. How cuteness “contains, domesticates and translates our desires”, and how it lives in a great part of who we all are. The exhibition, and now this text, concludes with a question: Does cute’s shiny new confidence represent its apotheosis in our late capitalist world? Or rather, does this sheen allow cute to undermine the very foundations of the neoliberal regime which spawned it with an ability to not only challenge the norm, but to transform it?

crowd vs. critic single take // A BEAUTIFUL MIND (2001)

John Nash spends his life looking through windows. Though we know today that he will become a Nobel Prize-winning mathematician, he spends most of his life on the outside looking in, drawing equations between the panes. First he scrambles to develop his thesis at Princeton University, and then he struggles to be a good husband to fellow brainiac Alicia (Jennifer Connelly) and good father to their son. But his life becomes more complicated when a new (and highly classified) job opportunity arises. Will this role finally help him realize his dream of making his mark on the world? 

CROWD // One of the beauties of this Best Picture Project is I keep getting to say, “That was not what I was expecting!” Once more, A Beautiful Mind is another excuse to dust off that phrase.

This Best Picture winner does check off a lot of boxes of modern Oscar contenders. It’s a technically accomplished biopic about an influential but misunderstood historical figure whose career competes with his family life, and yes, I could double the length of this piece by listing 21st century Best Picture noms featuring that arc. But there’s a twist to A Beautiful Mind, and it’s the jolt this biopic needs to stick in our memories. Somehow that twist wasn’t spoiled for me in the last two decades, so I’ll continue to withhold it in case you are just as lucky. Rest assured it saves what would otherwise be a stale historical drama with a penchant for shout-y melodrama. 

POPCORN POTENTIAL: 8/10

CRITIC // In short, A Beautiful Mind is more than the memes of floating numbers it has inspired. Crowe and Oscar winner Connelly provide a narrative heart, making the most of the script’s unnatural, expository dialogue and looking especially polished in the chic period costumes. The scene stealers, though, are supporting players Paul Bettany and Ed Harris, who walk a fine line between caricature and archetype but ultimately energize the story. (Notably, they are not accurate portrayals of their real counterparts in Nash’s life.) They are also part of this film’s sneaky strength: making difficult-to-understand concepts digestible. Those memes may feel silly online, but in context, they are a creative and, at times, thrilling depiction of our hero’s superpowers. Reading Nash’s Wikipedia page, I know I will never understand the mathematical concepts he explored, but for a moment, Ron Howard made be me believe I could keep up—what could be more unexpected than that?

ARTISTIC TASTE: 8.5/10

10. Do you have a guilty fav?

Not really, as I don't tend to feel bad about the things I like even if they're trash. I do feel a sense of sorrow when I think of how much I used to love the Harry Potter series though. I've let it go because it's absolutely not worth it with all of you-know-who's... everything, but it was a big part of my childhood, and foundational to a few friendships that also ended poorly and are now sore spots to look back on. So, guilty is the wrong word for that but... it's one of the things that I wouldn't be able to get back, if I had to live my life over again, y'know?

15. recommend and review a book

Might as well pick something a little lesser-known for this one... There's a Japanese revenge thriller novel called Confessions by Kanae Minato that honestly had me on the edge of my seat. Starts with the death of a 5-year-old child and just doesn't let up from there. You will not see the twists coming, it's brutal and it's fascinating, I really enjoyed it.

As a bonus one -- there's a YA novel called Gated by Amy Christine Parker that I always thought deserved way more attention. I had a special interest in cults when I was a teenager and that book is one of the most accurate and well-rendered depictions of one I've ever read, done at a perfect level for the age group. Highly recommended, damn good thriller.

18. do you like historical books? which time period?

There's not a particular time period of historical fiction I'm interested in. If I take an interest in a time period I'll mostly read books from that time period if I can, just to check some of the classics off my list. Otherwise, the time period of historical fiction I've read the most of is roughly the Victorian to the Edwardian eras, partially due to doing research for something of my own, partially because I've got a taste a certain series of pulp historical fantasy gay romances, and partially because it almost scratches the same itch left as my favorite dating sim.
