“Sometimes I wish I could send you all my forgotten love in a letter, in the mail. Just to wonder if your fingers would shake when you noticed my writing on the envelope.”   -- lucytoyou - return to sender.
Tumblr media
Sometimes we just ignore the stares. The overwhelming sensation of love they hold. Sometimes it is easier to forgo love. Lock it in a box and throw away the key. Even when the nagging sensation gets stuck on you like glue. Every second becomes harder to breathe, to think, until you have no other choice than suck it up and just look.
A mistake, she quickly realizes. As Harm’s eyes are on her unrelenting. There was a passion to that blue hue staining his eyes. Wave after wave of unfiltered emotions just striking her time and time again. “What?” She voices out, trepidation clear in that single word. Harm rolls his shoulders into a shrug, clear sign that he knows well what she is thinking, because he is on the same rocking boat himself. “Don’t...” Mac is quick to add, gaze moving to the wall across the bed. Whoever said one room, on bed, is a good trope haven’t really been at the end of it like she is now. Especially when tension is running high (and not because they are in hot territory) and emotions are utterly unreliable.
“I haven’t said anything.” Harm is responding, laying flat on the bed with his bulging arms crossing over his chest.
SHE IS DEFINETELY NOT STARING.
“It is what you’re think that worries me.” Following suit, Mac also lays down, welcoming the view of the ceiling.
“You scare easily, Mac.” Harm is turning his head to look at her. She can feeling his gaze on her. Causes her entire body to become aflame. Ignoring him and going to sleep seemed like the rational course of action but logic doesn’t apply in this instant, not with him. It was always the same and Sarah was so tired of constantly pushing down all that just want to surface. “What is it, Webb?” The name felt like a bucket of cold water washing over her, and Sarah is turning to him, arm propping her up to look down at him.
“He has nothing to do with us...” The words slipped, measured and soft. There wasn’t an ‘us’ they have been constantly making sure there wasn’t, one more than the other and Mac has lost count of it.
The timing was always wrong.
“If not him, what?” It was Harm’s turn to prop himself up, both now at eye level. It was staring contest all of a sudden. All that had been left unsaid swirling in each other’s eyes. It was torture. “Mac, you know how I feel.” And that was the camel that broke the straw back.
She was never sure when it came to him.
“Do I?” She questioned, eyes narrowing on him. “Because you always seemed to wait for me to go out the door to let me know.” Mic, Webb and the list goes on. It was exhausting, and she needed a break.
“It isn’t my fault your taste in men is horrible.”
If looks could kill, Harmon Rabb Jr. would have been found dead in this bed. Instead, Mac and bolting out of the bed, or tried to before he grabbed her by the arm to stop her. “That was in poor taste, I’m sorry.” He was quick to apologize but the damage was already done.
“I guess you’re right, my taste is horrible. I still care for you even in moments like this...” when his hand slacken its hold, Mac took the opportunity to slip off and head to the bathroom. Anything that Harm might say dying in his mouth as she closed the door shut.

Great Moments in Governance
In The Defense Production Act I argued that the DPA was neither especially useful or necessary and would probably be misused. In Sicken Thy Neighbor Trade Policy I argued that exports bans were a bad idea. So, of course, Donald Trump has used the DPA to ban 3M from exporting masks to Canada. “We hit 3M hard today” tweeted Trump, as if 3M were a foreign terrorist camp.
Since January (well before the government began to act), 3M has been ramping up mask production. Their response to the DPA order is on point:
Over the last several weeks and months, 3M and its employees have gone above and beyond to manufacture as many N95 respirators as possible for the U.S. market. Yesterday, the Administration formally invoked the Defense Production Act (DPA) to require 3M to prioritize orders from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for our N95 respirators.
…There are, however, significant humanitarian implications of ceasing respirator supplies to healthcare workers in Canada and Latin America, where we are a critical supplier of respirators. In addition, ceasing all export of respirators produced in the United States would likely cause other countries to retaliate and do the same, as some have already done. If that were to occur, the net number of respirators being made available to the United States would actually decrease. That is the opposite of what we and the Administration, on behalf of the American people, both seek.
I am against export bans in general but placing an ethically charged export ban on one of our largest trading partners and allies is especially shortsighted. For example, guess where one of the world’s largest producers of a key input for making surgical masks (FYI, these are different than N95s) is located? Canada.
…the Harmac mill [on Vancouver Island] is the world’s only producer of the particular grade of paper pulp used in the manufacture of surgical masks and gowns…

My Wife May Kill Me After This
Not too long ago, we were discussing the usefullery of some of our habits on the one hand and the harmacity of some other habits on the flip side.
I think I just mixed metaphors again - or is it similes? I could never tell the difference.
Anyway, as you may recall - in order to purge the trash heap of my old outdated habits holding me back from enjoying my Golden Years, I decided to reset my entire brain.
To those of you similarly mentally mixed up folks, I have some bad news. It didn't work.
Or maybe it did?......something to think about next time I have a few extra minutes sitting on the toilet solving global problems.
In any case, I'm in a weird in between place navigating my daily life by stamping down or ignoring the holding-me-back habits and trying to make use of the keep-my-life-working habits - and lord give me the wisdom to know the difference.
So now I've got a trick. I cemented in place a new habit. Kinda like tying a string around your finger - except that looks kinda stupid and you have to keep explaining to people what it's for so you don't.
I call it the weird out of place or what's wrong with this picture? trick.
Something out of place triggers the brain to ignore what you were just getting ready to habitually do and causes you to pause just a second to think about why that thing is there.
(Caution: Advice to my wife. Stop reading at this point or I can't be responsible for your anger or your for-sure overuse of the F word.)
My wife is making a cake today. She wanted the eggs and butter put out early in the morning so that the eggs would warm and the butter would soften.
Early last night she asks, "Will you put out the butter and eggs when you get up?"
Understandably outraged at the interruption to whatever I was watching on TV, I grumble, "Mmmkay."
An hour or so later as she's getting ready to retire, she asks, "Will you remember to put out the eggs and butter?"
Let's pause and consider what the proper answer to that seemingly innocent question is....will you remember?.....
All married guys everywhere in every culture from the beginning of time know that this is a trap.
I incoherently mumble "&$%#&@" under my breath - which I hope sounds to her like, "Yes, Dear."
Later, as I was heading up to bed, I luckily remembered to use my new memory trick.
I see a small bowl on the kitchen counter. It contains just a few lonely Cheeze-Its in the bottom of the bowl. Leftbehinds from one of my grandson's daily food forages.
I strategically place the bowl directly in front of my trusty Keurig K-cupper.
I never, ever not don't, and ever ever always do, drink coffee first thing when I get up.
Stumbling into the kitchen this morning, there was that bowl of Cheeze-Its staring me in the face and blocking the path to my first cup of coffee.
My brain worked as designed and I paused with my hand reaching for my coffee cup, and......Voila! ....out comes the butter and eggs while the coffee is brewing.
I'm so proud of myself.
I can't say this method works flawlessly each and every time.
Like recently when my wife asked why there was a men's size 8 1/2 tennis shoe in the freezer.
I wish I knew.

Nova Scotia chemists team up with mill to make N95 masks using pulp
A team of chemists at Saint Mary's University in Halifax is looking at methods to help East Coast mills produce pulp that can be used in the N95 respirator masks that have been in high demand during the global pandemic.
Christa Brosseau, the lead researcher on the project, says fresh methods are needed to manufacture a supply of the gear used to protect against COVID-19.
The professor is partnering with Port Hawkesbury Paper LP, based in Cape Breton, to determine how to use balsam fir and spruce fibre to produce the pulp needed for the masks.
The scientist says the current N95 masks are typically composed primarily of synthetic polymer materials with cellulose sometimes incorporated into one of the layers that make up the respirator.
Her research team, in collaboration with organic chemist Robert Singer, also of Saint Mary's University, are beginning work next month to come up with ways to allow fibre from the East Coast's softwood species to become the prime material to make the masks.
They envision adding a chemical step to the thermomechanical pulp production used in mills, which initially heats wood chips with steam and then grinds them before the fibre is pressed and bleached.
The Harmac Pacific mill near Nanaimo, B.C., currently makes medical grade pulp using red cedar wood fibre.
In Nova Scotia, the red cedar isn't available, meaning the mills will have to find a way to adapt the process to spruce and fir that dominate in the Acadian forest, said Brosseau.
"We want to make sure that any additives we explore are going to be sustainable, environmentally friendly, cost effective, and could be something that could be implemented into the mill process without gumming up the works," she said.
She says, if successful, the project could help meet the needs of health workers by supplying adequate protection equipment against COVID-19, while also supporting the struggling Nova Scotian pulp and paper industry.
After the recent shutdown of the Northern Pulp mill in Pictou County, there has been a large decline in the market for wood chips produced by the province's sawmills.
Brosseau said the researchers are looking to have some "potential ideas" for new processes to create medical pulp, including the potential of a mask made entirely of wood fibres, by this fall.
Asked if the process will produce effluent waste, she said, "we don't want to introduce anything into the stream that wouldn't be biodegradable or 100 per cent recovered." She said any additives would have to non-toxic.
A recent grant from Research Nova Scotia will provide about $72,000 to the project, primarily to hire research assistants.
The Port Hawkesbury Paper mill is providing samples of pulp for the chemists.
Andrew Fedora, the company's leader in sustainability and outreach, said that while the project is still in the early stages of research, it looks promising. The mill, which employs about 300 people, currently specializes in making high-quality paper for export.
"There seems to be shortages of various medical equipment with the panic over the shortage of N95 masks," he said in a telephone interview.
"From what I understand, there's more demand than there is capacity ... so, there is great opportunity."
This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 13, 2020.
