Ain't no Sunshine
(I wrote this a long time ago, a drabble for a character I created...I thought I'd share) TW: Violence (I have to get better about this)
“Ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone.”
The tune on his lips was oddly somber, it was close to bass as he sung a focused look in his eyes as he walked towards his goal. The trademark smile was completely missing from his face. That smile that was the constant mask, that smile that unsettled so many people who knew him was tossed aside today.
Today of all days he didn’t care. Today was a day he remembered something…someone. He remembered the way the sky was a sapphire that warmed the heard and the clouds were those pillowy white that you could imagine just sitting one. He remembered the long walk they had that morning, the love they made in the afternoon. He remembered the soft warmth of her hand and the lyrical sound of her laugh…he had to. If he remember that meat she was alive in some way…even if only in the shadows of the past.
“It’s not warm when she’s away.”
He sang as he approached the reinforced door down at the end of the hallway. It looked like a speakeasy door from the 1940s with one of those slots that can open for identification. When the man approached the slot opened. He didn’t hide his approach, he didn’t need to. Every year, he shut down for a day. He prayed that there would be a bullet in a gun that would find his heart. Not that he’d let them have it so easily…they had to earn his corpse. Non one ever earned his corpse.
BANG BANG
On the door to draw the attention of the man on the other side. This would be better, they’d be even more ready for him now.
“Pass…OH HELL!”
“Ain’t no sunnnshiiine when shes goonnnneee.”
Harlin sang with that look of loss and regret that had taken over his gaze. He didn’t see much right now, instinct guided him. Right now all he saw was her visage. A macabre combination of beauty and her final moments. He was both sadist and masochist on this day.
There were muffled shouts from the other side of the door. Harlin took a moment o pull out a semi-automatic something or other from the holster on his shoulder. He just grabbed a gun and made sure he had enough clips to keep it supplied. There was no plan…there was never a plan. Not this time, not on this day.
“And shes always gone too long…”
He sang before he took a step back and started to kick the door. There was no talking this time, there were no witty conversations.  Was this even a job right now? He didn’t remember. There had to be a reason he was here right? Yeah he had to have a job. What was it again? Gods he didn’t know.
BOOM!
He kicked again; the door bent making the most terrible roar of fatigued metal.  He remembered her eyes…those storm grey eyes that he could find peace within for hours.
BOOM!
The door gave way and there were men scrambling to get their weapons ready. The look of so much fear on their faces normally made him chuckle just a touch. Now he wasn’t even seeing their faces. Now he was just going through the motion. Perhaps he was even better this way. As he lifted his gun and just started putting the bullets where they go…heads and chests.
“Any time she gooes away.”
There were bodies dropping left and right, and not even one was the target at hand. They just dropped with half loaded guns in their hands, clutching their money and their drugs like they were the most important things in the world. Harlin didn’t care, they were nothing to him. To him dogs were worth more than stooges, at least dogs were loyal and happy to see you. Not out of fear, but out of acceptance and what they could muster out of love. Harlin was certainly a dog person.
“Wonder this time where shes gone.”
He mutters as he puts a few more bullets in those that were still struggling to cling to life. The last one was begging him for something, the words were falling on deaf ears. CLICK! Apparently Harlin needed to reload. No need to do that here. His hand reached out to palm the man’s face.
“No..please…no gods I have a fam…”
Again they were words that Harlin didn’t really hear. He was just staring at the eyes between his fingers and he squeezed. That sickening sound of bones breaking and being shoved into the brain would be enough to make almost anyone feel of shiver of something akin to regret. Harlin felt nothing, not a damn thing as he took the man’s life with his bare hand.
“Wonder if shes gone to stay.”
Harlin didn’t see the carnage around him, he wasn’t here to so to speak. This was just something to keep busy, something he tried to do to pull himself out of his own head. It wasn’t working. He did take a moment to notice that part of his suit was stained red, he must have taken a bullet to the shoulder. The nanotech in his body would probably take to it soon. Pain wasn’t something he felt too much anymore. The cyborg was numb.
He paused as he heard the chambering of bullets in another room. He saw the door on the other end. That was the office he was supposed to find his target. The boss…some numb nuts or something. He didn’t even care.
Her eyes…he still remembered them. The smile that made them light up, and the lifeless look when he found her years ago. Body laid out eyes wide open. There was no fear in them, acceptance but not fear. The bullet hole still smoking, the blood still seeping into that pool around her body.
“Ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone.”
He watched as a hole was blown through the office door from the other side and the bullet slammed into the wall behind him. All the tech in the world couldn’t make you a good shot. Harlin looked down to the blood on his hands.
“and this house just ain’t no home.”
He sang softly as he looked up and put a few bullets right threw that hole that was just blown through it. He heard a body drop. He should be happy. He could hear the scrambling the cussing as someone else tries to pick up the gun they had in there and the sound of another body hitting the floor as he fired some more bullets into it.
“Anytime she goes away.”
There was pleading as Harlin walked to the door and kicking it down as well. The boss was just a small man, its why he surrounded himself with so many henchmen. He couldn’t life the beast of a gun that punched a hole through the door. He looked up and scrambled back into a corner.
“I…I can pay.”
Harlin just picked up the rifle on the ground and lifted it with one arm.
“and I know
I know
I know
I know
I know.”
He slung the gun over his shoulder and approached his mark giving him a hard enough back hand to knock him out cold. The small man was slung up over his shoulder.
“Hey, I oughtta leave young thing alone But ain't no sunshine when she's gone”
With that he would turn in his latest bounty…tomorrow he would be back to normal, but today. It was a day of remembrance of the one set of eyes, the one smile, the one heartbeat that made this life worth living. It was a day to remember why he is like this, why he does what he does.

I prefer how the dub had Bohman talk about him and Haru being brothers no matter what. Makes this scene hit harder. 😢

Excited for my next session! Planning on having the party run through the capital city while it’s under siege by demons to try and get to the coast to escape.
Plan right now is to have 4 city street maps and one docks map that they have to reach the end of with lots of obstacles in their way.
Many enemies to make it clear stopping and fighting is not an option. (And I have a kid the party wants to protect at the docks so that should keep them moving as well)
In every map I’m going to have a complication/distraction for each player. Some friends trapped under rubble and fighting off the invaders stuff like that.
It’ll be interesting to try and come up with challenges and obstacles that aren’t combat but focus on slowing down or holding up the party from getting to a point.
I have lots of prep in my future but it’ll be so fun!

On March 16, 1991 Latasha Harlin’s short life came to a violent end in the midst of racial tensions in LA, and became a major spark for the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. By the late 1980s, racial tensions were high in South Los Angeles. After the change in national immigration laws in 1965 a large number of Korean immigrants arrived in Los Angeles and by 1968 the first Korean-owned market opened in South Central LA. Longtime African American residents in the area at first welcomed the Koreans but eventually grew angry with them because they refused to hire black employees and often treated their customers poorly. By 1990, 65% of South Central businesses were Korean-owned and a 1992 survey of these storeowners revealed considerable racial prejudice against black customers and black people in general. Koreans in response argued that their attitudes evolved from high crime rates in the area and shop owner fears of shootings and burglaries. Latasha Harlins became a victim of these racial tensions on the morning of Saturday, March 16, 1991. She entered a store owned by a Korean family, to purchase a bottle of orange juice. As she approached the counter, Soon Ja Du, accused her of stealing after seeing her place the bottle in her backpack, despite her holding the $2 payment approaching the counter to pay. Du grabbed the bag and the two women had a violent scuffle. Harlins threw the juice bottle back on the counter and turned to leave the store when Du pulled a .38-caliber handgun and shot 15-year-old Harlins in the back of the head. Du was arrested and her trial was held on November 15, 1991. Security-camera footage which showed Harlins’ attempt to pay for the juice and the subsequent scuffle between the two women convinced a jury to find Du guilty of voluntary manslaughter. The Judge, Joyce Karlin, rejected the jury’s recommendation and instead sentenced Du to five years probation, 400 hours of community service, and a $500 fine.
One of the many reasons black people don't f*** with Asians like that and we should collectively drive them out of our neighborhoods

For dealing with the heat I usually wet a washcloth or towel and keep it around my neck, and drinking cold beverages helps too. I heard that drinking hot tea actually cools you down faster because because it makes you sweat and sweating cools your body quicker than drinking something cold, but I don't know how accurate that is and I don't think I could drink something hot if I was already uncomfortably warm 😅 I've also had a long, flat ice pack in my freezer for many years so I break that out when things are really bad and that's good for laying across your neck or atop your head but I realize this is a very niche thing that I own which is why I recommend the towel thing. Oh and if you can somehow also make your socks cold, a cold head and cold feet help regulate the rest of your body temperature.
As someone who lives somewhere it's regularly around 43°C in the summer I know how awful it can be especially without proper air conditioning, ours has given out twice this summer already. Stay safe and do your best to stay cool. If you have an oscillating fan I recommend that as well
oh my god thank you so, so, so much
