PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON (1970.06.26) It’s funny the things you can get right somehow. You just know: That makes sense, that feels right. The truth is the truth is the truth.

"My filmmaking education consisted of finding out what filmmakers I liked were watching, then seeing those films. I learned the technical stuff from books and magazines, and with the new technology you can watch entire movies accompanied by audio commentary from the director. You can learn more from John Sturges' audio track on the 'Bad Day at Black Rock' laserdisc than you can in 20 years of film school. Film school is a complete con, because the information is there if you want it."

Back this week with another Monday Philm—Hard Eight (1996), to celebrate Paul Thomas Anderson's birthday and continue the gambling theme after watching Owning Mahowny a few days ago. (They almost couldn't be more different films, but actually some funny similarities between them).
I love the pocket fire scene so much, it's so perfectly PTA. “Things happen. This happens, that happens, shit just happens.” And it was brand new pair of jeans, too!
John C. Reilly balances his role so well—his character John can be goofy, yeah, but not overtly so, not to the exclusion of a darker, harder side. Anderson does such a great job casting actors for roles that, as he proves, are well within their wheelhouse but most other directors wouldn't envision. Adam Sandler in Punch-Drunk Love is big one but also Reilly here, Paul Dano in TWBB (where is his Oscar), PSH as Phil Parma (at a time when he was not getting such gentle types).
Philip Baker Hall was definitely not playing against type here but it's his type for a reason—that face belongs in casinos and shady rooms. Just spent 20 minutes trying to find a photo of him as a young man and couldn't find one, which proves my point! Sydney is an underrated PTA character, PBH an underrated actor.
Cocky stinky cringy annoying Young Craps Player I love you! Sometimes I have a lot to say about this character and what a stunning one-scene performance this is, and sometimes I just like to stare at his arms in that too-tight shirt. Tonight I am looking (only kinda respectfully) at his biceps <3

Rest in peace, Philip Baker Hall (1931-2022).
No matter how big or small the role was, Phillip Baker Hall was guaranteed to give the standout performance.
This man was able to provide "Seinfeld" with one of it's most cartoonish side characters, carry the entirety of "Secret Honor" by himself and give one of the greatest performances of all time in my favorite film, "Magnolia".
He was a true larger-than-life talent who I'm definitely going to miss.

Now Watching: PT Anderson Movie Ranking!
Recently my film watching partner got into PT Anderson films. While I don’t think I am the target customer of his style of films, I do love to expand my pallete and make movie ranking posts!
Tumblr media
My PT Anderson Film Ranking:
There Will Be Blood (2007): This is one of my favorite all time films. Love everything about this movie, and Daniel Day Lewis is a timeless man.
Phantom Thread (2017): Similar now that I am sitting and thinking about it to the movie above and below this one in style, but a unique story in itself.
Hard Eight (1996): It is an interesting flashback to one of the personalities of the 90′s. Interesting story telling but it is a little confusing. Feels like he wanted to do his own version of story telling but you can tell, as one of his older films-it needs experimentation and refinement.
The Master (2012): I know I saw this movie, I believe my partner liked it. But I don’t remember anything about it, so last place for me.
Looking to discover some of his films for yourself? Here is a list of his films: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Thomas_Anderson_filmography
Looking on the Wikipedia page, he varies his work over multiple genres and is quite good at what he does. One can tell from his work, he’s a little weird, and the only issue with weird is-not all weirds work together. But I appreciate he does what he does well, how he wants it, and he does not change to become more mainstream popular.  Have you seen any of his films? What would your list look like?
