REVIEW | "Hard-Boiled Cop and Dolphin" - Vol. 4 | B3 - Boston Bastard Brigade
Tumblr media
When we last left the heroes & villains of Hard-Boiled Cop and Dolphin, trouble was brewing from beneath the sea. A mysterious ruins holds a massive power, one that could spell bad news for humanity if placed in the wrong hands. Fortunately, Boyle and Orpheus have been training hard to deal with some of the more powerful foes they may have to face. In its fourth volume, Hard-Boiled Cop and Dolphin showcases what sort of talent Boyle has hidden deep within himself.
Continuing on with the “Sunken Ruins” arc, Boyle and Orpheus dive deeper into the mysterious cavern whilst Umi keeps a close watch on Chako. However, when her guard’s left down, Chako is captured but those who believe in the prophecy. As Boyle and Orpheus get closer to the end of the ruins, more allies of Poseidon pop up to ruin their plans. Thankfully, Boyle and Orpheus aren’t the type to lie down & drown if things aren’t going according to plan.
Tumblr media
It’s here in Hard-Boiled Cop and Dolphin where we find Boyle overcoming his greatest weakness: his inability to swim. However, it doesn’t come from him actually learning to backstroke or doggy paddle; it arrives in the form of a great power. Its damage counter can reach ridiculous levels, but it’s all fine and dandy when it’s showcased in a narrative that’s already this bonkers! The moment of both execution and aftermath are showcased greatly by Ryuhei Tamura’s art style, with him not afraid to get too gruesome when appropriate.
Speaking of art style, Tamura brings in the creepy when seeing the false killer whales to humanoid form. I’m not exactly sure if he’s read the works of Sam Kieth, but their sharp fangs and eyeless expressions brought to mind the Iszes of The Maxx. It’s a page that left me staring at the art for a few moments, as it brought a terrific level of threatening vibes to their appearance. Of course, like an Isz, they do wind up being easy to handle when you know where to strike them down.

Current Reads June
Hard-Boiled Cop and Dolphin: Ryuhei Tamura
Publishing Date: June 2020-June 2021
Tumblr media
I was bummed to find out that Hard-Boiled Cop and Dolphin was canceled, and the fifth and final volume will release in October. No matter how I feel about a Manga series, creating comics is tough. And it must be hard for a Mangaka to put their series to rest when it hasn't been entirely told.
I'm still starting off with this series, but there are 47 chapters total. So I'll enjoy it while I can, and there is A LOT to enjoy.
Boyle Samejima is a reckless, tough cop, who is willing to do anything to catch his perp. However, his antics get him removed from the Tokyo Police district and into a small police squad on an island.
Nothing is normal about this island though. The police force is currently providing protection for a little girl from a cult that reveres her as an oracle. Oh, and her adopted father is a humanoid Dolphin, who is also a part of the police force.
It's a hilarious and wacky ride right from the jump, There is so much to discover, from the little girl's mysterious powers to the oddities that occur on the island, and the banter between Dolphin Cop and Samejima. As I mentioned before, I'm still early in the series but I'm thoroughly enjoying the humor of this manga. And it's a shame the story has ended.
Chainsaw Man: Tatsuki Fujimoto
Publishing Date: 2018-2020
Tumblr media
I can see why people like this Manga. Especially those inclined to edgier things. Some themes include gore, action, and the fact that the protagonist has an excellent design with chainsaws attached to his freaking head and arms.
There are things I like about it, but I can't say it's my cup of tea. I know, BLAPHAMOUS! I understand what people like about it, but it's just not for me.
The reason stems from mainly one reason. The protagonist. Many people enjoy watching an anti-hero, but I usually don't. I understand this character's backstory has shaped his behavior. His terrible life has turned him into someone just wanting to survive. Who needs and wants narrow down to getting food and wanting affection via mostly wanting to touch boobs and date his boss.
I haven't finished, and I do intend to. And I am more than willing to make a new post if my mind changes. If it turns out that I fall in love with this series. I'm more than happy to say I'm wrong.

Since I finished Golden Kamuy I read Hard Boiled Cop and Dolphin which is a supernatural police procedural mystery comedy. It's definitely cop propaganda but still enjoyable.
It's set in the Osagawara Islands (aka the Bonin Islands) which are very remote islands in the North Pacific that are the southernmost territory of Japan. It was fun to go from Hokkaido and Sakhalin (the northernmost parts of Japanese territory) in Golden Kamuy to the complete opposite in the south.
The story is short at just under 50 chapters and is about a loose cannon cop from Tokyo who gets transferred to the islands (which are Japan's smallest police department) as punishment. Once there he finds it's got a lot more action than he expected and also a lot weirder.
His new partner is a dolphin man who is the father of a 4 year old girl who was raised as a prophet in the "cult of the sea." The two of them are tasked with dealing with "ocean crime" that makes its way onto the island.
It's pretty funny with the two cops having an unhinged rivals dynamic. The kid is very cute and the mystery compelling. There are a lot of homages to the One Piece fishmen and other little Easter eggs.
