Pathfinder 2e is to me kind of the reward of learning D&D 5e. Like you don't need to know D&D first but it's a good head start, because it learns a lot from some of D&D 5e's better ideas. But then you learn it and it does a lot better than D&D, like the three action system and more detailed character creation. It also helps that Pathfinder has a lot of worldbuilding elements and flavor in common with D&D, similar fantasy races and monsters and such, so if you like those parts of D&D, Pathfinder still has those.

#musings #dungeons and dragons #pathfinder #like it still has elves and dwarves and halflings and the same chromatic/metallic dragons #and all of the same classes as d&d except artificer and warlock #but warlock has a thematic equivalent in the witch and artificer has TWO thematic equivalents #plus pathfinder is available for free (without piracy) and isn't owned by wotc #so it avoids most of d&d's problems while still preserving the good stuff #i don't think it does much better in the whole 'three pillars' thing though #it's still very much a combat system with little to offer for roleplay and exploration #but i'm kinda fine with that since neither of those things need a lot of game mechanics to work well #exploration maybe but roleplay shouldn't be very crunchy i feel
